Primary fracture from an array of shotholes by c. M. LOWNDS. B.Sc. Hons. (Rhodes). Ph.D. (Cape) (Visitor) and P. C. SELIGMANN. B.Sc. (Witwatersrand) (Visitor) The effects of stress on the directions of cracks that are propagating in a brittle medium are described. It is shown that the superimposition of stress fields from the holes of an array always adversely affects fragmentation. Consequently, the best fragmentation will result when holes are fired far enough apart in space or time for each to develop its whole crack pattern without disturbance from the others. This concept leads to a philosophy for the design of more effective blasting patterns, which has been verified on model scale and which explains many published, empirical results.

The successful application of solid electrolytes in electrochemical cells for high-temperature thermodynamic studies depends to a large extent on an accurate knowledge of the P. value of the electrolyte (the oxygen partial pressure at which the ionic conductivity and n-type electronic conductivity of the electrolyte are equal). Consequently, the P. value of an electrolyte must be determined prior to its use in electrochemical cells. This paper describes the successful application of a coulometric titration technique in the quantitative assessment of the P. values of a commercially available ytria-stabilized zirconia electrolyte that has been used extensively by local investigators. The experimentally determined P. values of the electrolyte are reported and compared with P. values reported in the literature for a similar electrolyte.

A. Continuous miners, and their operation at Bosjesspruit Colliery J. D. INCH*, B.Sc. (Min.), M. I. Min. E. (Visitor) A brief description is given of the main types of continuous miner and their incidence of application in South Africa. Definitions and descriptions of the design parameters and components of the main cutting head are given. together with an outline of the modifications carried out to improve machine cutting performance. An account is given of experience with the application of water infusion to suppress airborne dust during continuous-miner operations. B. The selection and performance of continuous miners at Matla Coal by J. D. STONE, B.Sc. Eng. (Min.,) M.B.L. (Graduate) The reasons for the choice of continuous miners for the development of accesses and the winning of coal in a modern underground coal mine are discussed. It is shown that, at relatively low depths, the extraction rate as well as the costs are more favourable than those of proved total extraction methods. The selection of a continuous miner is largely dictated by factors such as production rate, capital and running costs, imported content and the extent to which local content and manufacturing are to be increased, manpower requirements, seam thickness, expected floor and roof conditions, and maximum cutting height. The present inherent shortcomings of continuous miners, such as inefficient continuous transportation of coal away from the miner and the lack of an infinitely variable traction to match the sumping speed with the feasible penetration speed, are pointed out. Specific problems encountered and the methods of solving them, as well as a planned trial with a heavy-duty continuous miner, are discussed. C. Continuous mining within the Tavistock Group of collieries I. D. BRUMBY.Dip. Min. (Visitor) The Tavistock Group of collieries is situated some 25 km south of Witbank. The three collieries comprising the Group are Tavistock Colliery, Phoenix Colliery, and South Witbank Coal Mines. Continuous mining is practised to some degree at all three collieries. This system of mining was introduced at Phoenix during 1976, South Witbank during 1978, and Tavistock during 1979. For the twelve months ended June 1979, continuous mining accounted for 1,7 Mt of the 4,5 Mt hauled from underground. All the continuous miners introduced to date have been of the rotary-drum type. D. Pillar extraction at Usutu Collieries using continuous miners by c. J. BEUKES(Visitor) In 1969 Usutu Collieries began pillar extraction with conventional mechanized equipment. This was very successful, but certain disadvantages could be eliminated if continuous miners were used instead. In 1976 the first continuous miner was introduced for this purpose; this proved so successful that a second unit was introduced in 1977, and pillar extraction by conventional equipment was discontinued. By the end of 1978, 1,3 Mt had been mined from pillar extraction by continuous miners. This paper describes the method in some detail, and indicates that the operational costs are lower than for conventional bord-and-pillar mining. In February 1996 the OECD's Environment Policy Committee will commemorate its 25th anniversary with a fifth meeting at Ministerial level. Environment ministers will be taking stock of the progress made by OECD countries in protecting and managing the environment in that quarter-century, and sharing views on likely challenges and co-operative responses. Ministers can point to many important accomplishments. Scientific understanding and technological tools for establishing and monitoring risks to human health and the environment have improved dramatically since the early 1970s. All OECD countries now have in place comprehensive environmental legislation, supported by specialized institutions for policy design, implementation and enforcement. The results of these efforts are increasingly evident in the form of cleaner air and water, and improved protection of natural areas, notwithstanding the many complex problems that remain.

The ore mined at Black Mountain is of a complex nature, being composed of both magnetic and massive sulphides, which have greatly varying metal values. Because of this, there is need for a rapid method of assaying for the continuous monitoring and control of the process streams, and the Outokompu Courier onstream analysis system and the Proscon process-control computer systems have therefore been installed. Geostatistics In view of the continuing demand, the Department of Mining and Mineral Sciences in association with Special Courses Division, Department of Adult Education and Extramural Studies, both of the University of Leeds, will offer two further courses on A Practical Introduction to Geostatistics in 1981, each covering ten working days. The courses will run from 30th March to 10th April and 14th to 25th September.

Computer analysis, modelling and optimization of gold recovery plants of the Anglo American Group by M. I. BRITTAN M.Sc. (Eng.), M.S., Ph. D., (Member). and E. J. J. van VUUREN M.Sc., (Visitor). Multiple correlation and regression techniques are used to analyse gold plant operating records. Key variables m the process which Influence the gold recovery are Identified and assembled into a mathematical model. This constitutes a valuable tool for the optimisation of variables such as the rates of reagent addition and for assessing the economics of extending the plant. Substantial short term economic benefits have been realized. The techniques provide a rapid diagnostic service without interfering with normal plant operation. Quantitative results are presented and their implications examined. The value of the method is discussed.

The Rhodesian approach to the vegetating of slimes dams by J. R. C. HILL, B.Sc.(Agric.) (Visitor) and W. F. NOTHARD (Visitor) To prevent environmental pollution from mine dumps, it is necessary to stabilize them either mechanically or biologically. In the long term biological stabilization is more attractive because of its permanent nature. Initially, the basis of stabilization is in the correct siting and construction of the dump. The main toxic factors influencing plant growth on Rhodesian mine dumps are arsenic, antimony, copper, nickel, a high ratio of magnesium to calcium, excessive soluble salts, high pH, and Iow macronutrient content. Root-growth studies in culture solution and pot experiments are used to supplement information on the suitability of plant material obtained from replicated field trials on mine dumps. In addition to the selection of plants for toxic tolerance, it is advisable to provide multiple-layer protection with trees, shrubs, and grasses. Further, a range of different plant species gives greater biological stability. Protection must be provided for young plants against wind erosion and the abrasive effects of windblown sand. Planted wind breaks are preferred to mechanical forms; windrows of garden refuse make good wind breaks and at the same time introduce organic material to the dump and provide a good environment for seedling establishment. The use of artificial fertilizers and sewage effluent is recommended to hasten the development of a complete and protective plant cover.

Selected members of the slag system were reduced in graphite crucibles in an argon atmosphere, and the physicochemical properties of the reduced derivatives of the slags were determined in inert crucibles. It was found that slags having magnesium aluminium titanate as the primary phase before reduction underwent an increase in liquidus temperature, accompanied by a change in the primary phase. No analogous behaviour could be detected for the slags having perovskite as the initial primary crystallization product. In most instances, the viscosity of the melt passed through an initial minimum, followed by an increase as the reduction time was extended. Increased MgO/CaO ratio. basicity, titania content, and reduction temperature all served to accelerate thickening. During reduction, the electrical conductivity of the slags tended to rise relative to the value for the unreduced melt.

In 1978 the South African Coal Processing Society (SACPS), together with the Institute for Energy Studies of the Rand Afrikaans University, ran a school on coal processing. This was judged by both the organizers and the participants to have been extremely successful. As a result, it was decided to hold a second coal school in 1980. The smelting of calcium carbide has always been plagued by eruptions, too often with serious injury y or loss of life. To find their causes, the author calculated an internal energy balance using 1992 data for CaC2 and CaO, and older data for the remaining items. The heat content of the charge, and that of the hot gases formed at the reduction temperature, showed that only a fraction of its heat content can be supplied by these gases. Laboratory data on the electrical resistivity of fine mixtures of coke and non-conductive solids were extrapolated to a commercial carbide charge, and then used to calculate the heat produced by current flowing through the mix from the electrode surface to the hearth, which, under favourable conditions, sufficed to bring the charge to 1900 K and higher, at which temperatures reduction could take place.

In this article, a case is made for the importance of the transfer and management of tacit knowledge to ensure continued sustainable competitive advantage within the pyrometallurgical industry in South Africa. The state of knowledge management (KM) is assessed through a theoretical and empirical study. The empirical part of the study was conducted by means of a survey questionnaire. An important prerequisite within the research entailed determining the current state of KM within the pyrometallurgical industry, and the findings are presented throughout this article. The research argues for initiatives to address the high turnover of pyrometallurgical knowledge workers. This industry needs to entrench tacit knowledge and therefore address the problems associated with the continuous loss of inherent specialized knowledge. Appropriately, emphasis is placed on identifying initiatives required to embed and retain not only human capital lost through mobility, but rather retaining tacit knowledge through a practical KM framework.

"South Africa’s Northern Cape Province hosts semi-precious and gemstone occurrences that are sporadically mined on a small scale by local communities. Tiger’s eye, a gemstone known for its chatoyancy properties, is found in important deposits located near the town of Prieska, where is it intermittently mined. Challenges faced by small-scale and informal mining include mining without proper permits, risky mining practice in dangerous terrain, and illegal export of raw material without concerted effort at domestic beneficiation. As part of a study aimed at job creation and social upliftment in the region, tiger’s eye deposits in the Prieska area were assessed to assist small-scale miners to understand tiger’s eye grades and their distribution. This will allow not only more efficient and safer mining of these deposits, but also beneficiation of the raw product into tumbled stones, cabochons, jewellery, and other small artefacts for sale. A hub established in Prieska by Mintek trains locals in the beneficiation of tiger’s eye. Supply to the hub must make use of a consistent grading system, which is discussed in this paper. Together with proper mine licensing, such an approach will develop mining and beneficiation skills, and create and sustain employment for the local community. IntroductionTiger’s eye is a semi-precious stone known for its chatoyancy property, which is caused by parallel, silicified asbestos fibres that impart a silky lustre to specimens. Deposits of tiger’s eye in the surrounds of the town of Prieska, Northern Cape Province, formed the focus of a study aimed at small-scale mining and beneficiation of this commodity. The Prieska tiger’s eye deposits are located along the N10 route to Upington (Figure 1). Tiger’s eye is unevenly distributed and occurs as lenses of various sizes, interbedded in gently folded metasedimentary rocks of mostly banded iron formation (BIF). The tiger’s eye occurrence in the Northern Cape Province, especially in the Prieska area, has not been extensively researched. There is thus limited information available in the public domain. The lack of knowledge on tiger’s eye distribution has resulted in local small-scale miners adopting a trial-and-error method of mining. Basic geological mapping and field evaluation of the deposit, coupled with professional judgement, are important aspects of any small-scale mining operation and can contribute significantly to the formulation of various acceptable and equally viable mining methods and practices."

The assessment of the stability performance of open pit highwalls has traditionally been based on consideration of surface movement rates. Although generally accepted in industry, this approach presents challenges for establishing appropriate threshold values to allow for safe mining operations and does not address the issue of total strain. Surface movement monitoring data from a limited number of open pit mining operations in North and South America has been evaluated in terms of highwall strain, rock mass quality and inferred mechanism of instability. Threshold strain levels for key stages of highwall stability proposed from previous work has been reviewed and are endorsed based on evaluation of additional data. An empirical highwall strain criteria for the assessment of highwall stability performance is postulated based on relatively consistent trends in highwall strain data. L’évaluation du niveau de stabilité des hauts murs de carrières a traditionnellement été basée sur les taux de mouvements de surfaces. Bien que cette approche soit généralement acceptée à travers l’industrie, elle présente des défis pour la définition de seuils appropriés concernant la sécurité des opérations minières et n’adresse pas la notion de déformations totales. Des données de mouvements de surface provenant d’un nombre limité d’opérations minières à ciel ouvert d’Amérique du Nord et du Sud ont été évaluées en terme de déformation des hauts murs, de qualité de la masse rocheuse et des mécanismes inférés d’instabilité. Des seuils de déformation pour différentes phases clefs de stabilité de hauts murs ont été revus et sont endossés, basé sur l'évaluation de donnés additionnelles. Un critère de déformation empirique pour l’évaluation de la stabilité des hauts murs est postulé, basé sur des tendances relativement consistantes de données de déformations de hauts murs. Die Beurteilung der Stabilität von hohen Felsböschungen basiert traditionellerweise von Oberflächenbewegungen. Obwohl dieses Verfahren im Allgemeinen akzeptiert wird, stellt es jedoch gewisse Probleme für die Festlegung von Grenzwerten für die Sicherheit dar. Die totalen Dehnungen werden bei dieser Betrachtungsweise vernachlässigt. Eine beschränkte Anzahl von Oberflächenbewegungs Daten von Bergbauwerke in Nord- und Südamerika sind in Bezug auf die Dehnungen von hohen Felsböschungen, Felsqualität und davon abgeleiteten Bruchmechanismen untersucht worden. Mixtures of MnO and graphite were reacted under argon at temperatures ranging from 1200 to 1425°C, and the loss in mass of the mixture was recorded continuously. The results showed that the rate of reduction of MnO increased as the temperature increased and the ratio of MnO to C decreased. The effect of the particle size of MnO and of graphite on the rate of reduction at I350°C was very small in the range 63 to 250 µm for MnO and 45 to 355 µm for graphite. The rate of reduction at I350°C was increased markedly by the addition of Na2CO2 and K2CO3, was slightly increased by the addition of Fe2O3, was unaffected by the addition of CaO, MgO, and AI2O., and was decreased by the addition of SiO2. Some CO2 was always present in the effluent gas, and this was taken as evidence that the reduction of MnO occurred by way of CO2 as an intermediate product. The activation energy of the ratecontrolling step was 57,5 kcal, and this was similar to the measured activation energy for the gasification of graphite by CO., namely, 61,S kcal per mole of graphite. A simple kinetic model was derived on the assumption that the gasification of graphite was the ratecontrolling step, and the results over the temperature range 1200 to I425°C, when plotted in the appropriate form, yielded straight lines as predicted by the model.
