This study was aimed at determining the effects of industrial action on profitability in the South African platinum mining sector. We compared companies where employees engaged in industrial action (affected companies) to strike-free companies (competing companies). Industrial action refers to strikes by rockdrillers, as these strikes typically result in the shutdown of production at the mines affected. A t-statistics analysis of significant differences in revenue and earnings of affected and non-affected platinum companies was conducted using data from platinum mining companies listed on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange from 2011 to 2015. Contrary to international studies, which suggest that the spillover effects of industrial action positively affect competing companies, our findings show that profits in the platinum sector decrease significantly during strike periods for both affected and competing companies. The results indicate industrial action is a threat to the profitability of all companies, and that employee demands should be prioritized and negotiated before they result in industrial action. Improved dialogue between management, labour unions, and employees in the platinum mining industry is recommended. The study contributes to the scanty literature on the effect of industrial action on the profitability of mining companies in a developing economy.

The Empress nickel/copper deposit west of Gatooma in Rhodesia occurs within gabbro and amphibolite, disposed at the contact of a granodiorite stock (Barebottom Hill) and the surrounding greenstones of the Archaen Bulawayan System. The orebody has a pipelike form and a poor surface expression due to plantation of the area by Miocene (Africa) and later Victoria Falls erosion cycles. Barebottom Hill represents a monadnock remnant in the geomorphological surfaces while traces of the once larger Empress orebody have been removed. Limitations in soil geochemistry necessitated both studies of the vegetation ecology and the biogeochemistry of the area, both of which were anomalous. The use of geobotany was found to be restricted but biogeochemistry offers a most effective prospecting tool and was found to define the sub-outcrop of the ore-body more precisely than soil geochemistry since these methods reflect and differentiate anomalies emanating from bedrock mineralisation and those due to surface phenomena.

Mining of sand in South Africa is rapidly growing to sustain an increasing demand for sand for building purposes. Although mining of sand is regulated by environmental legislation, such as the National Environmental Management Act 107 of 19981, previous bad mining practices have left areas of land degraded and vulnerable to erosion. This study was conducted in the Seringveld Conservancy, where mining of sand has left the landscape with a degraded and unsightly appearance, and where little rehabilitation of the original vegetation has taken place. The aim of the study was to develop rehabilitation techniques for the degraded mined soils on two sand mines, Boekenhout Sand and Krokodil Sand, and to develop an overall strategy of revegetation by regenerating key plant species. Techniques for regenerating indigenous tree species cover, using modified mined sludge if topsoil is not available, were used to develop a practical and cost-effective strategy to be used in revegetation. A comparative trial was used to cultivate indigenous tree species in different soil mixtures. The study is important as it provides new information on the rehabilitation and revegetation of sand mined areas in the Seringveld Conservancy. This study will determine if alternatives could be used to replace topsoil on mined areas where none is available. The study is needed to determine whether revegetation of the mined areas would be possible using indigenous plant species that are difficult to grow. The overall results indicate that replacing topsoil was successful for various modified soil mixtures that could sustain the growth of indigenous vegetation on the sand mines. Different indigenous tree species require different modified soil mixtures for successful propagation. A revegetation strategy was developed to complement and enable the rehabilitation of the mined areas in the Seringveld Conservancy. Abstract A new approach is introduced for study of the behaviour of geotechnical strength parameter prior to slope analysis to ascertain whether strength parameters of slope materials are homogenous or heterogeneous at different mine depths. The strength parameters used for the study are uniaxial compressive strength, tensile strength and shear strength. The analysis is based on statistical analysis of variance technique for one-way classification. The application of the technique is given through a case study in an openpit mine. Comminution is a critical stage of mineral processing which aims to reduce the size of ore particles through breakage, consequently increasing the likelihood of liberation of valuable minerals. Several factors, such as pre-existing cracks, mineralogical composition and particle size, are known to affect ore breakage behaviour. While investigating the contributing role of each factor is essential to improve understanding of breakage, isolating individual factors by experiment is typically impractical. Numerical techniques such as the Bonded Particle Model-Discrete Element Method (BPM-DEM) have been developed as a means of studying closely controlled breakage conditions. This study evaluates this technique in modelling the effect of pre-existing cracks breakage behaviour for synthetic ore specimens during impact breakage in a short impact load cell (SILC). Synthetic ore was modelled as a collection of discrete entities connected by brittle-elastic beams. Model parameters were calibrated against macroscopic material properties of a conventional homogenous synthetic ore. The extent of pre-existing cracks within specimens was prescribed by varying discontinuities between the connecting entities. An approach with the insertion of seed points was used to model the mineralogy of the specimens. Results showed that pre-existing cracks resulted in a decrease in the fracture force as the crack density increased. Additionally, the irregularity of fracture patterns within rock specimens after impact became more apparent as the crack density increased. The findings were used to emphasise some of the attributable causes of the variation observed between ore hardness characterisation tests and in situ ore behaviour. "The sizing, designing, and costing of copper electrowinning circuits requires an in-depth understanding of the fundamental relationships between circuit parameters and the practical operation requirements. The aim of this investigation was to optimize total copper electrowinning project cost by mapping the operating limits of key mechanical equipment. The model was compiled by mapping various cellhouse layouts in terms of number of cathodes per cell, crane productivity, stripping machine productivity, and rectifier–transformer (rectiformer) sizing using data tables for sensitivity analysis. These parameters were then collated and evaluated on a cost by size basis. The model provides an optimum band of operation for cellhouse productivity and project capital cost for a typical range of production throughputs, from 10 kt/a to 200 kt/a cathode copper. The information may be used as a high-level selection guide to assist with identifying a costeffective copper electrowinning circuit design for a specific production rate. The data was validated and compared with existing copper electrowinning cellhouses around the world that typically install no more than 84 cathodes per cell. P.W.D. ROSTER OF CONSULTING ENGINEERS (Extract from a letter from the Secretary for Public Works) In recent years a large number of professional engineers has entered the consulting field. Although the names of most of these have been placed on the Department's roster of consulting engineers either as a result of representations made by the South African Association of Consulting Engineers or by applying direct to the Department there are still some who seem to think that canvassing through an influential person is necessary to obtain commissions from the Department. The Department's roster is open to all registered professional engineers who are suitably experienced to undertake consulting work and commissions are awarded strictly on merit. I shall appreciate it, therefore, if registered professional engineers who wish to be considered for commissions by the Department could be advised that they must apply, in the first instance, to be placed on the Department's roster. On receipt of such an application a questionnaire listing all the information required by the Department will be forwarded to the applicants for completion and returning to the Department for record purposes. All names which appear on the roster are taken into account when a commission has to be awarded, due consideration being given to factors such as geographical position, seniority, capability and compatibility. High Pressure Grinding Rolls (HPGR) are mostly used prior to pelletising processes to increase the specific surface area (SSA) of iron ore concentrate. For expressing SSA, the Blaine index is utilised as one of the most important dimensional properties of iron ore pellet feed. ISO 21283 is a standard test method that explains the manual of Blaine air-permeability apparatus for determination of this parameter. In this standard, the disaggregation method is based on passing the minus of 1 mm samples from the 0.150 mm sieve. The disaggregation process has an effective role on the results of Blaine airpermeability test especially for regrinding HPGR products. In this research, firstly the Blaine index of samples was measured without disaggregation. Following this, disaggregation was done by passing the minus of 1 mm samples through three sieves with different dimensions, 0.150, 0.090 and 0.045 mm, separately, and the Blaine index was calculated for each one. Finally, lab-mill with rubber balls, called Jar mill, was investigated as another option. Screen analysis and image analysis with SEM were performed to evaluate the effects of the sample's disaggregation on the size distribution and agglomeration of samples. The results showed that the disaggregation method with sieve size 0.150 mm, according to ISO 21283, was not applicable for HPGR products because the particles were still stuck together. In addition, the disaggregation method with the sieve size 0.045 mm or with Jar mill offered reasonable results. Twenty-seven schools from al over South Africa are taking part in the series, which will run for 13 weeks. The participating schools were selected on the basis of their performance in the National Youth Science Olympiad and in Mintek's Minsa science competition, which has been organized on an annual basis since 1988.

A new Scramble has hit the African continent. This Scramble has many drivers: the 1978 Deng Xiao Ping liberalizations in China; the 1989 collapse of the Soviet empire; the ICT revolution; the ease of global communications. The underlying dynamic is the end of the bipolar world of the Cold War and its replacement with multipolarity. According to HSBC (2011), in 2050 China will be the world?s largest economy, with India number 3 and Brazil number 7. Russia will be 15th (below its old rival, Turkey). South Africa maybe ranked 30th, yet has been invited to join the exclusive (BRIC) club. One has to ask, why? It is sad to note how low South Africa is assessed to be?currently it is around number 24 in the world; the reason for the fall is that the HSBC model includes population growth, and it is in this domain that South Africa is a loser, being constrained by the impact of HIV/AIDS on its life expectancy. The original four BRIC nations include the factory of the world (China), the garden of the world (Brazil), the gas station of the world (Russia), and the back office of the world (India). South Africa comes to the club both as jeweller of the world and as gatekeeper. China, Brazil, and Russia all have considerable expertise in mining exploration, extraction, and processing.

This presentation describes a technique under development referred to as Selective Blast Mining. The technique involves millisecond sequential blasting. It applies to mines where the gold bearing conglomerate band is clearly demarcated, and separated from the waste rock in the foot and hanging wall. The width of the conglomerate band should be less than ± 0,7 metres. A research program was initiated in August 1994 by Drs RE. Robinson and I.E. Bock. The objectives were to develop new blasting methods that can reduce: ? the losses of gold in narrow reef stoping. Losses of gold can be as much as 10-15% ? and to introduce selective mining to reduce ore dilution with waste rock.

Mechel, a large, integrated steel, stainless steel, and ferroalloy producer in Russia is committed to upgrading its facilities to world class pyrometallurgical process and environmental practice. Yuzhural Nickel currently uses shaft furnaces to produce a matte containing iron, nickel and traces of cobalt. This rather old technology is thermally inefficient and is characterized by high operating costs. Mechel has investigated suitable equipment and processes to upgrade the plant, and awarded a contract for the construction of a 12 MW DC smelter, located near the town of Orsk, to Bateman Engineering Projects in June 2008. The selection of DC furnace technology for laterite smelting can be considered as a strategic highlight for the pyrometallurgical treatment of low-grade lateritic ores, and could be the first industrial-scale implementation of this technology. This project has been designed to achieve multiple goals including the demonstration of the process and associated equipment technology at commercial scale, to confirm the scale-up design parameters of the forthcoming 2 x90 MW, twin electrode DC furnaces, and to prove the environmental emission superiority of closed furnaces. It also provides a valuable operator training platform. This paper deals with the process design, key technology building blocks and design features which have been incorporated to produce a pyrometallurgical vessel capable of (i) resisting slag superheat and chemical aggressiveness, (ii) process fine material without pre-agglomeration, (iii) achieve high nickel recoveries and(iv) being tolerant to the variations in chemical composition of laterite ore. The approach to increasing campaign lives between partial and complete rebuilds, through the use of composite furnace module (CFM) technology originally developed and patented by the University of Melbourne, is also followed in more detail. Unfortunately, results from hot commissioning and lessons learned from initial operation are not available because the project completion has been delayed due to the worldwide downturn in demand for commodities. Jointed rock slopes are generally stable, as there is no freedom of movement for blocks of rock. In an open- pit mining environment, blasting opens up space into which blocks of rock can fail, resulting in the common occurrence of slope failure. Prior to the blasting of a trim pattern, the immediate highwall is scaled, where loose rock material is removed by means of a mechanical scaler. As mining of the pit progresses, the height of the scaled highwall from the pit floor progressively increases. These highwalls are never scaled again for the remainder of the pit life, and time-dependant deterioration contributes to these highwalls becoming subject to rockfall and, sometimes, slope failure. This paper documents the development of a South African innovation, a remote-controlled mechanical highwall scaler, a world first for the mining industry. The scaler will enable open-pit highwalls to be scaled from crest to toe whenever the need arises. It will reduce the risk associated with highwalls and deliver on the Anglo American promise of producing safe, profitable platinum.

Ticor South Africa operates a dry mill at the town of Empangeni in the province of KwaZulu-Natal on the east coast of South Africa. The dry mill processes a non-magnetic mineral stream constituting rutile, leucoxene and zircon as major minerals, and minor quantities of ilmenite and other non-valuable minerals. For plant control and optimization, continuous ‘real time’ information about the mineral and chemical compositions in various plant streams is required. The current practice is to take samples at regular intervals and submit them for mineralogical(grain counting) and chemical analyses. However, these methods are time consuming, and in the case of manual grain counting, tedious and operator dependent. Until now an on-line or real-time instant mineral quantification system, which will be of great value in a plant operations environment, has not been available. Blue Cube Systems has developed a mineral quantification system using spectral mineral analysis. It measures and quantifies the composition of mineral samples instantly, providing consistent data in real time. A series of process stream samples from the dry mill mentioned above were used to evaluate the Blue Cube Systems instant mineral quantifier. This article will •describe the procedure of setting up and evaluating the Blue Cube Instant MineralQuantifier equipment •present its results, and •discuss the intended applications.

Geometallurgy - the science of predicting the behaviour of ores along the value chain based on their geological and mineralogical characteristics - has barely moved beyond process minerology studies. These studies typically link process behaviour to the mineralogical and microstructural characteristics of pristine or processed ores in a qualitative or semi-quantitative manner. Eventually, a trial-and-error optimisation of the operation is achieved. However, to deliver on its promise, geometallurgy should progress beyond this current approach to a fully quantitative understanding of process behaviour, including the various uncertainties involved, namely predictive geometallurgy. One of the barriers currently hindering this development is the neglect of most ore characterisation data obtained in geometallurgical studies. This is mostly due to the large extent of this information exceeding the capacity of conventional software. To address this challenge, we developed a data mining platform consisting of an SQL database, an R front-end in-house package, and back-ends to interpret data from several analytical instruments. This platform enables the use of the statistical and data mining power of the R open-source environment for any geometallurgical study. Potential applications range from ore characterisation to process understanding and forecasting, and from geostatistical prediction to operational control and optimisation. The scripting abilities of R allow for the: 1) processing of many streams in loops, thus freeing the user from repeating tedious click-and-drop tasks; 2) computation of virtually any derivate or aggregate quantity from the data; 3) distribution of the work among several processor clusters; and 4) keeping of a log file for the calculations done. This contribution presents the building blocks of this platform, and illustrates with several examples its potential to enable predictive geometallurgy. The South African democratically-elected government instituted policies and legislation that are intended to bring about change and transformation in the country and have drastically affected different industries, among others, the mining industry. The Mineral and Petroleum Resources Development Act 28 of 2002 (MPRDA) and the Broad-based Socio-economic Empowerment Charter (Mining Charter) were introduced in order to redress previous inequalities and to promote women's employment in the mining industry. This research evaluates the practical implementation of the MPRDA and the Mining Charter with specific reference to women in underground mining. A quantitative research paradigm was used. Data were collected through a process of a face-to-face interview surveys utilizing a structured questionnaire. The research setting was limited to the platinum-mining industry in the area of Rustenburg in the North West Province. The study population consisted of 195 available women working undergound at the mine. It is clear from the findings that mining companies are facing major challenges in their attempt to incorporate women in underground mining activities. Company policies regarding these issues must be firmly in place; however, the challenge lies in the translation of these policies into practice. In this regard, managers will have to play a leading role in the successful phasing in of women into the underground mining arena.

Shear-thickening suspensions abound throughout the hydraulic conveying industry; at least this is the perception of many engineers running plants where hydraulic conveying is commonplace. In reality, shear thickening behaviour is limited, in the main, to high concentrations of fine particles, including colloidal and biological suspensions, at moderate to high shear rates. In the authors? experience most cases of shear-thickening behaviour have been either simple ?coarse? particle interactions, poor instrumentation techniques, or both. In some cases these were obviously heterogeneous flows, while in others flows that were homogenous, or were thought to be homogenous. Examples, which illustrate this erroneous perception are given. However, the trend towards pastes and complex suspensions that use high concentration carrier fluids means that the underlying slurries for many of these flows may now be truly shear-thickening. Unfortunately, suspensions that might exhibit shear thickening also invariably exhibit slip, or wall-particle depletion. These separate phenomena are difficult to resolve experimentally and many observations of apparent shear-thickening behaviour are in fact obscured or convoluted by slip effects. A method is presented whereby the true flow properties of these high concentration suspensions, and hence accurate prediction of pipeline flows, can be made using a parallel plate rheometer.

The excavation damage zone (EDZ) caused by drill and blast excavation consists of intense damage adjacent to the remaining half barrel of the blast hole, new fracturing induced by the blast and reactivation of pre-existing fractures. The properties of intense microfracturing adjacent to the half barrels of remaining blast holes are based on study of rock samples from ZEDEX-tunnel and it’s extension at Äspö and the Research tunnel at Olkiluoto in Finland. The new and reactivated fracturing is based on results of mapping of slots cut in the rock in ZEDEX-project. The zone of increased porosity adjacent to half barrels, which penetrates to a depth of some centimeters was studied by using novel 14C-PMMA method. The penetration of the radial fractures, which is an order of magnitude deeper, was studied by mapping using color penetrant. Results of EDZ studies carried out at Äspö HRL in Sweden and in Research Tunnel at Olkiluoto show that the properties of EDZ can be affected significantly by engineering design. The result imply that the additional pore volume caused by distinct fracturing around the blast holes caused by state-of-the-art smooth blasting technique could be of the same order as that of the damaged zone adjacent to the surface of the half barrels. Die Eigenschaften einer immensen, an die Halbrohre der Restbohrlöcher angrenzenden Mikrorissbildung beruhen auf einer Studie über die aus dem ZEDEX-Tunnel gewonnenen Gesteinsproben und deren Fortsetzung im Untertage-Labor Äspö (Hard Rock Laboratory, HRL) in Schweden und im Forschungstunnel bei Olkiluoto in Finnland. Die neue und reaktivierte Rissbildung basiert auf den Auswertungsergebnissen der Schlitze, die bei dem ZEDEX-Projekt ins Gestein geschnitten wurden. Die Zone der vermehrten, an die Halbrohre angrenzenden Porösität, die in ein paar Zentimeter Tiefe eindringt, wurde anhand der neuen 14C-PMMA-Methode untersucht. Das Eindringen der etwas tiefer gelegenen radialen Risse wurde anhand eines farbigen Eindringungsmittels untersucht. Die in Äspö und Olkiluoto durchgeführten EDZ-Studien zeigen, dass die EDZ-Eigenschaften wesentlich durch Engineering Design beeinflusst werden können. Les caractéristiques de la microfracturation intense adjacente aux demi-cylindres des trous de mine restants reposent sur l’étude des échantillons de roche en provenance du tunnel ZEDEX et de son extension au laboratoire souterrain d’Äspö (« Hard Rock Laboratory » ou HRL) en Suède et du tunnel de recherche d’Olkiluoto en Finlande. La fracturation nouvelle et réactivée repose sur les résultats du placement des rainures sur la roche dans le projet ZEDEX. La zone de porosité accrue adjacente aux demi-cylindres et pénétrant à une profondeur de quelques centimètres à fait l’objet d’études recourant à la nouvelle méthode 14C-PMMA. La pénétration des fractures radiales, considérablement plus profondes, a été étudiée par placement en utilisant un agent pénétrant coloré. Les résultats des études EDZ effectuées à Äspö et à Olkiluoto montrent que les caractéristiques de l’EDZ sont susceptibles d’être affectées de manière significative par la conception technique. Le volume vide de fracturation résultant du dynamitage autour du tunnel est du même ordre que celui de la zone concassée autour des trous de mine.service.

Fugitive dust from mineral extraction and processing activities can significantly influence air quality, the environment, and the health and quality of life of workers and surrounding communities. Poor engagement and communication between experts and lay persons, disciplinary silos and polarised viewpoints have made it difficult to develop a holistic understanding of the complex health issues associated with environmental emissions of mine dusts, and consequently to design meaningful and integrated approaches to address such issues. The collaborative Global Challenges Research Fund (GCRF) Mine Dust and Health Network, hosted by Minerals to Metals at the University of Cape Town, serves as a collaborative think-tank to inform research directions within and across disciplines, government policy and regulations, health monitoring programmes at public clinics, industry best practice, community healthcare and impact prevention programmes. It focuses initially on the southern African region, but with the intention to expand to mining-intensive developing countries within the rest of Africa, South America and Asia. This paper outlines the approach and activities of this global transdisciplinary and intersectoral network and presents some of the key outputs and achievements to date.
