Despite the media's use of the mining industry as a whipping boy over its perceived attitude towards the environment, the facts remain that the only legislated requirement in the SA Statute Books for any form of environmental impact-assessment prior to development is to be found in the Minerals Act in the form of an EMPR. Not only is our industry complying with this requirement, but moves are afoot to set up environmental management systems for existing operations in preparation for seeking accreditation under ISO 14001 when published towards the end of this year. On how broad a front are we advancing? ? Is the industry equipped to handle these challenges? ? Does it have the determination to overcome its problems? ? Do we realise that failure may mean the loss of markets overseas to competitors who can meet the international standards? ? Where are the shortcomings and when must our efforts be focussed?

Blaine number has long been used to evaluate the pelletising ability of iron concentrate in the industry. Much information and practical data are available about the effect of Blaine number on pelletising efficiency of different concentrate types. But not many researchers have focused on the effect of Blaine increasing method on pelletising behaviour of coarse concentrates. In this paper the effect of two different grinding methods (i.e. HPGR and Ball Mill) on physicochemical properties of coarse magnetic concentrate green and fired pellets were investigated. Microstructural studies by Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscope (FESEM) showed that the concentrate for which the Blaine number had been increased through HPGR grinding, has flake-like morphology. In contrast, increasing the Blaine number through ball mill grinding results in more granular particles. Two samples were prepared using HPGR and ball mill. The Blaine number of the HPGR product and ball mill product were 900 cm2.gr-1 and 1200 cm2.gr-1 respectively. The results revealed that pellet properties of this HPGR product are comparable to that of the ball mill product; this is due to the fact that the flake-like morphology leads to enhanced pelletising performance of coarse magnetite concentrates. The global emphasis on conserving energy resources has led to the adoption of hybrid power systems in vehicles. Optimally applied, hybrid systems can save up to 40% on fuel costs. To optimally manage a hybrid vehicle's energy flow it is necessary to know, in real time, all the energy requirements to complete a given route. The energy consumption depends mainly on the vehicle mass, speed profile, and route topography. Of these, the topographic profile is the one factor that is only route-dependent and not influenced by the vehicle or driving styles. The heading vs. distance profile is also an example of a route characteristic not influenced by the vehicle or driving style. In this study the topographic and heading profiles are used to identify routes, and are easily measured by means of digital barometric pressure and compass sensors. Correlations between the current route and previously travelled/stored routes are performed based on their topographic and heading profiles in a point-by-point manner. Above-ground tests were first performed using a road vehicle and six routes to evaluate the system. The system consistently and correctly identified a 20 km route within the first 4 km. It also proved to function correctly in underground tests through the implementation of an instrumented hand-held surveyor's wheel. This system finds direct practical application in optimizing the energy management of an underground hybrid locomotive used by the mining industry in South Africa, but can also be of benefit in applications where route identification is required and using GPS is not feasible.

An advanced high internal phase water-in-oil (HIP W/O) emulsion binder and flotation with an internal dispersed water phase of 95 vol% was used to beneficiate South African weathered coal from discard dumps. Five coal samples with calorific values ranged from 8.48 MJ/kg to 20.94 MJ/kg were utilized. The performance of the HIP W/O emulsion was compared to that of kerosene in terms of the physicochemical properties of the clean coal products. A 5 kg/t emulsion binder addition produced a high-quality coal concentrate with 11.76% ash and a heating value of 28.61 MJ/kg from a sample containing 29.34% ash. Using the same dose and coal sample, kerosene resulted in a clean coal concentrate with 17.47% ash and a calorific value of 26.42 MJ/kg. Further samples were also beneficiated using 5 kg/t of W/O emulsion. The highest increase in calorific value was achieved from the beneficiation of a sample containing 48.71% ash, from 8.48 MJ/kg to 18.16 MJ/kg. It has been established that emulsion binders can upgrade coal samples dumped many decades ago.

The Pt-based alloys have a high potential for replacing some Ni-based superalloys (NBSAs) used in the highest temperature and most aggressive environments, and vanadium would be a beneficial alloying element. Six alloys of average compositions Pt-26.6Al-9.1V, Pt-23.1Al-17.8V, Pt-9.6Al-21.1V, Pt-17.4Al-6.4V, Pt-22.3Al-7.9V, and Pt-6.0Al-10.1V (all in at.%) were manufactured by arc-melting and examined in the as-cast condition using scanning electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction (XRD). Five samples were heat treated at 1 000°C for 1 500 hours and water quenched, then examined. The phases were identified using energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy and the identities were confirmed by XRD. In most of the samples, the phases existing in the as-cast condition were different from those at 1 000°C after ~1500 hours heat treatment. A solidification projection, an isothermal section and a liquidus surface projection were determined for the Pt-rich corner.

The first and second editions were published in 1976 and 1980 respectively, and both contained nineteen chapters. The second edition brought the operating data and process descriptions up to date. The third edition covers comprehensively the changes that have taken place in the primary copper industry over the past two decades. For example, reverberatory furnaces now make up only a third of the major primary smelting furnaces, compared with about three-quarters in the 1970s. Control of air and water pollution and recycling are given much more emphasis, along with novel and emerging technologies.

Potgietersrust Platinums Ltd is Anglo Platinum?s only open pit operation and annually extracts 57 million tonnes of rock from 2 open pits. Over the past 3 years ~220 km of exploration drilling has been done, ~1000 km of rock face have been exposed for face mapping and over 7000 laboratory and field tests have been conducted. This has produced large amounts of geotechnical data to be utilised for feasibility studies, initial slope design and ongoing slope optimisation. It was necessary therefore to develop geotechnical databases to manage the vast amounts of data collected. SABLE and MineMapper 3D databases were created for logging and mapping respectively, with rock testing data incorporated into both. A pit inspections database was developed in MS Access and the existing groundwater and slope monitoring database was improved. The databases were linked to AutoCAD and Datamine to ensure that the latest geotechnical data is used for planning, draughting and modelling. The use of geotechnical databases ensures that no data is lost, standards are maintained and analysis can be easily performed. This increases the confidence of the analysis and allows the geotechnical engineers to optimise slope designs and blast designs on a regular basis. This reduces the risk of slope failure thus making the open pits more economical and safe.

Selective extraction through leaching of an amorphous slag obtained from a base metal smelter plant in Botswana is investigated in this paper, where the main objective is to optimise the experimental variables that would result in the maximum selective extraction of the three base metals (Ni, Cu and Co) from the slag waste. Mineralogical tests showed that the sample is composed mainly of fayalite (Fe2SiO4), with a total entrapped metal sulphides content of about 1.0 wt.% occurring as fine occlusions in the fayalite phase. In our experimental program, we compare the effectiveness of two common leaching techniques. In the first method, we use sulphuric acid to carry out atmospheric beaker leaching tests, and in the second method we use high pressure oxidative leaching. The effects of acid concentration, oxidant addition/oxygen partial pressure and pulp density on metal dissolution rate are examined. The optimal Ni, Cu, Co extractions of 80.5%, 81.9 and 98% respectively were obtained under high pressure oxidative leaching conditions (150 oC, 0.6 M H2SO4, 0.5 MPa O2), with substantially low dissolved Fe of 9.6%, the majority of which was removed as jarosite in the residue. Atmospheric beaker leaching yielded poor extractions of Ni below 40% when sulphuric acid combined with hydrogen peroxide (1.0 M and 0.6 M respectively, 65 oC) were used for leaching, while Fe, Cu and Co dissolutions were each about 80%. Therefore, using high pressure oxidative leaching provides a possibility to effectively extract Ni, Cu and Co while producing an environmentally benign residue, thus alleviating the current adverse environmental issues associated with the abandoned smelter slag. We propose a layout design for the UG2 Reef where weak geological alteration layers are present. The collapse of the Everest platinum mine in South Africa indicated that these layers substantially weaken the pillars. The popular Hedley and Grant pillar strength formula cannot be used where these alteration layers are present. Underground investigations at Everest mine and numerical modelling of the layout were conducted using the TEXAN code and a limit equilibrium model. Simulations of a collapsed area and an intact area allowed for a preliminary calibration of the model. This was subsequently used to explore modified layouts for these ground conditions. An alternative is to compartmentalize the blocks of ore using barrier pillars. The numerical modelling predicted that the barrier pillars appear to remain stable even in the case of large-scale collapses, provided their width exceeds 25 m. Main access routes into the mine can be protected by a double row of pillars at least 15 m wide to provide a safe travelling way. As a cautionary note, these conclusions are based on the model calibration and this needs to be refined in future. Calibration of the limit equilibrium model remains a challenge owing to the large number of parameters involved.

"Recent geological exploration at Rosh Pinah mine revealed that the mine’s major production is shifting towards the western orefield, which will increase the demand for air flow to be supplied to this area. A snapshot of the ventilation survey carried out in December 2014 at the western orefield drill drive B (WOF-DDRB) showed that the air flow was well below the required standards. In order to improve the existing conditions, possible options were considered and simulated using Ventsim™ software.The best option found was to replace the existing western orefield fans with the larger fans from the inactive southern orefield workings, to increase the air flow in the DDRB district. Simulation showed that as much as 20 m3/s of air can be received at the working faces of WOF 30, compared to the previously received amount of 1.37 m3/s. The economic analysis indicated that the above option can reduce the ventilation cost by N$1.9 million annually. It was also noticed that after implementing this option together with other projects, the ventilation conditions in the mine were greatly improved and currently give no cause for concern. IntroductionA good mine ventilation system should be capable of providing adequate quantity and quality of air to all working faces, and is critical to the occupational health, safety, and comfort of underground employees (Luxbacher and Ramani, 1977; Exikis and Kapageridis, 2006). No ventilation system can remain adequate indefinitely; as the mine workings are extended, the ventilation characteristics such as system pressures, air volumes, leakages, and airway resistances change considerably. Continuous improvement of the ventilation system is needed to ensure compliance with health and safety regulations (Lovejoy, 2010). It also ensures that the right quality and quantity of air is delivered to all the necessary areas at the lowest possible cost. This can be achieved by identifying inefficient airways and poorly ventilated areas in the mine and planning how best to upgrade them.The latest geological exploration shows that the focus of production at Rosh Pinah mine is shifting towards the western orefield (WOF). As mining progressed, the working areas have advanced away from the main fans, which increased the resistance to air flow drastically and resulted in increasing demands being imposed on the main fan in order to supply an adequate air flow. This process also created more leakage paths between the fan and the working areas, which has caused the air to short-circuit before it can reach the faces. Consequently, a much larger quantity of air has to be circulated by the fan so that the stipulated quantity reaches the face, which increases operating costs (Singh et al., 2004)."

Bauxite residue known as red mud (RM) is a by-product produced in massive quantities during alumina production by the Bayer process with a utilisation rate of less than 5%. A large amount of RM accumulated and produced continuously has had a seriously adverse impact on the surrounding ecological environment. The application of RM in building materials is considered to be the most effective and thorough way to make RM harmless and recycle resources for the reason that adding RM to concrete as a mineral admixture could not only consume a lot of RM, but also save cement and other energy-consuming industrial products. In this paper, the adaptability to cement and aggregate of RM was studied. The results showed that the compressive strength and flexural strength of concrete using ordinary Portland cement, slag Portland cement or fly ash Portland cement as cementing material showed different trends with the increase of the amount of RM. The influence rules of RM on the compressive strength of Portland cement, slag Portland cement and fly ash Portland cement concrete were similar, whether for silicate aggregate or carbonate aggregate. RM has a negative correlation to the flexural strength of silicate aggregate-ordinary Portland cement concrete, but a positive correlation to silicate aggregate-slag Portland cement, silicate aggregate-fly ash Portland Cement. RM promoted the formation of calcium carbonate crystals and inhibited the formation of ettringite and calcium hydroxide crystals in the matrix while ordinary Portland cement, Portland cement and fly ash Portland cement were used as cementing materials. This study provided support for the use of RM in concrete, the reduction of solid waste storage, and the saving of high energy consumption cement as well. Silicon Smelters consumes more than 80000 t/a of wood-derived charcoal as carbonaceous reductant in the production of silicon metal. More than 10% of this material is discarded as fines (<6 mm) generated due to abrasion during processing. Charcoal fine residues (<650 μm) and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) binder were used in this study to produce mechanically strong charcoal briquettes for metallurgical application as carbonaceous reductant. The PVA binder was added in mass percentages of 1, 3, and 5 wt% to the charcoal fines. The compressive strength, abrasion resistance index (ARI), drop shatter resistance (SRI), and water resistance index (WRI) were measured as functions of curing for up to 7 days under atmospheric conditions, and the results compared with metallurgical grade coarse charcoal. The ash content of the produced briquettes was found to be high (6.6–8.0%) compared with the coarse charcoal (1–3%). The 3 and 5 wt% PVA-bound briquettes were found to be the strongest, with compressive strengths of 40 and 115 kg/cm2 respectively, with WRI values of 75 and 73% respectively. The produced briquettes were found to have lower ARI and SRI values compared to the coarse charcoal. Future work should include beneficiation of the fine charcoal discards prior to briquetting, and an increase in binder addition to above 6 wt% to improve the ARI and SRIn.

Since the early 1970s research has been ongoing to develop a cost-effective way of continuously mining the narrow reef, hard rock, typical of South African gold and platinum mines. In the late1980s it was shown that impact ripping was a practical solution for the deep gold mines. In March2001 Lonmin and Sandvik agreed to co-operate in an endeavour to design and manufacture a prototype narrow reef mining machine with the ultimate aim of producing such a machine on a commercial basis that would enable Lonmin to create a safer and more productive environment within its mines and for Sandvik to enhance its leading position as a supplier of a new generation hard rock cutting machine. This paper describes the developed technology, the current progress of the delivery of the required objectives and the optimum mining layout for the roll-out of the mining method.

Mr D. Twigg graduated in Metallurgy at the Sheffield Polytechnic, and later obtained a Master of Science degree at the University of Bradford. Mr I.D. Matthews matriculated at Roosevelt High School and joined the No. 1 Parachute Battalion in 1968. He worked in Zimbabwe for 31 years in geological prospecting, civil engineering, and open-pit mining.

"Effective management and mitigation of pit slope instability in open pit mines begins with a comprehensive slope monitoring programme. The ability to differentiate between non-critical pit wall movements due to rebound or relaxation of the excavated slopes and movements that may be indicative of slope failure is important for maintaining a safe working environment and maximizing production. Slope failure prediction methods using velocity, acceleration, and strain criteria have been introduced and put into practice over the past few decades. Forty-eight slope failures with surface monitoring data are presented and assessed using the strain-based failure prediction approach, with consideration of the quality of the rock mass and the potential failure mechanism. The results indicate that the strain-based approach can be used to provide general guidance regarding strain thresholds for pit walls for a variety of failure modes in diverse geological environments. The advantages and potential drawbacks of the strain-based and other slope failure prediction methods are discussed. The importance of implementing a pit slope monitoring and performance evaluation system early in mine development is also emphasized. IntroductionThe successful prediction of the Manefay Slide pit slope failure at Bingham Canyon at 9:30 am on 10 April 2013 (Engineering and Mining Journal, 2014) highlighted the importance of having a comprehensive slope monitoring system that provides an accurate prediction of the time of failure of an open pit slope. Using most of the geotechnical monitoring tools available, the time of the failure was predicted within hours and equipment and personnel were evacuated from the pit well in advance of the failure. From a time to slope failure perspective, the monitoring system in place was a success.There are two general groups interested in monitoring pit walls, with slightly different objectives in mind when the monitoring system is being set up. The slag-tailings based artificial reef concrete (ARC) is made of CaO-CaSO4 activated granulated blast furnace slag (GBFS) as cementitious material and deslimed gold ore tailings as aggregate. In order to investigate the potential application of the material as ARC, the strength development, hydration characteristics and application performance were investigated under different preparation conditions. Results indicated that using seawater as the mixing water can effectively promote the hydration of slag and generate a large amount of hydration products such as ettringite, CSH gel, hydrotalcite and Friedel ’s salt in the early curing period and so render the material with good early compressive strength. Seawater curing can also accelerate the hydration reaction in the early stage of hydration. The hydration reaction of slag and the compressive strength of ARC can be effectively promoted by increasing the specific surface area of slag. The 28-day compressive strength of the slag-tailings based ARC prepared with 30-50% CaO-CaSO4 activated slag and 50-70% tailings can reach to 19.88-42.87 MPa. Also, the material has a low surface pH value, good resistance to chloride ion penetration, and sulfate corrosion. (Hons.) in chemistry (1949) from the University of the Witwatersrand. Mr G. C. Thompson matriculated at Dale College in 1951. He then attended the University of the Witwatersrand, where he obtained a B.8c. (Min. Eng.) in 1959. Mr P. T. Fewell was born and educated in the United Kingdom. After obtaining the degree of Bachelor of Engineering (Mining) in 1958 at Sheffield University, he emigrated to South Africa. DtP. R. Jochens, Pr. Eng., has been a member of Council since 1974, serving as President in 1980-1981.

South Africa is one of the leading producers and exporters of coal globally. A significant amount of the country’s production is obtained from previously mined underground bord and pillar workings. This coal is in the form of pillars and remnants on the roof and floor of the old workings. The good quality coal pillars were left behind as primary support during underground bord and pillar mining operations. Due to the depletion of virgin coal reserves, the pillars and remnant coal are now removed using opencast mining rather than underground methods. However, the secondary extraction of pillars and remnant coal from the old workings using opencast methods entails some serious challenges that have a negative impact on the safety and productivity of the operations, affecting both personnel and machinery. If these risk factors and challenges are managed properly, then the opencast mining operations could remove the pillars safely at recoveries competitive with those of virgin coal operations. In this study we review the recurring challenges affecting opencast pillar mining by means of field investigations and consultations with experts at five opencast pillar mining operations, and evaluate the best practices used to combat these challenges. It was found that each mine has its own unique conditions and challenges.
