This report describes Bureau of Mines research that led to the design, prototype fabrication, and successful proof-of-concept testing of an improved stench fire-warning system for underground noncoal mines. Stench systems are the most widely used means of warning driers in underground noncoal mines of fires or other emergencies. A stench system alerts miners that an emergency condition exists by injecting an odorant into the mine air. Although stench warning systems have been used successfully for over 60 yr, present systems suffer several serious shortcomings, including odorant toxicity, unreliability of warnings, widely varying stench concentrations, and others. In 1980, the Bureau began a research program to upgrade the stench warning system. The resultant system overcomes the deficiencies of existing systems by substituting tetrahydrothiophene for the commonly used ethyl mercaptan stench odorant, and through the use of a specially designed stench injector. The improved injector reliably meters stench fluid into either ventilation-air or compressed-air streams at a precisely controlled rate. Prototype hardware has been fabricated and proof-of-concept tested under bath laboratory and in-mine conditions.

This profile study of the commercial secondary aluminum industry examines not only the elements that form the industry but also the technological contributions of each toward industrial growth. Concise descriptions of processing methods trace aluminum scrap from generating sources to marketable industrial and consumer goods. Economic and marketing appraisals are used to illustrate the impact that recent technology has had upon the secondary aluminum industry. Price, supply, demand, competition, and substitutes are selected as components of an economic model of the secondary industry and are used to illustrate the aggregate effects of technological changes. The final section is a conceptual look at the future in which sensitive economic indicators (such as die casting in the automotive and appliance industries) are examined as well as the problems of conserving mineral resources by retrieving secondary aluminum from solid waste.

Research workers from the Bureau of Mines and industry met with other government and industry representatives at the Mont Chateau Lodge, Morgantown, W. Va., on May 30-31, 1973, to discuss the current status of methane control in eastern U.S. coal mines. The opening remarks, the eight technical presentations, and the discussions of the members of a government-industry panel are published here for the benefit of those concerned with the control of methane in coal mines. In addition, an introduction has been added to present the background of work in this field.

Continuous experimentation utilizing a 3- by 36 - foot rotary kiln was conducted to demonstrate the feasibility of simultaneous induration and reduction of magnetic taconite concentrate . Lignite , or lignite - anthracite mixtures , and green magnetite pellets (64.2 percent Fe , dry basis ) were heated in a rotary kiln to about 2,100 ° F. After separation from excess reductant , the product pellets were found to be highly reduced and acceptably hard . A total of 140 tons of prereduced pellets with an average Fe content of 79.0 percent was produced at Minneapolis and smelted in the Bureau's experimental blast furnace at Bruceton , Pa . Two additional supplies of prereduced pellets were obtained from The Steel Company of Canada , Ltd. , Hamilton , Ontario , which contained 83.8 and 91.3 percent Fe , respectively . Smelting of prereduced pellets was compared with that of unreduced pellets obtained from The Hilton Mines , Shawville , Quebec , and from the Erie Mining Co. , Hoyt Lakes , Minn . Blast furnace tests established that a substantial decrease in coke rates and higher production result from the use of prereduced pellets .

In conventional noncoal, room-and-pillar mining, the cutting machine is frequently a major source of airborne dust. Water is often used for dust control. An evaluation of typically used water systems during this program showed that they reduced dust levels by 60 to 70 percent over dry cutting when at least 0.5 gpm of water was applied. These systems, however, are only marginally effective in maintaining compliance levels and the added moisture causes operational problems. During the program, three additional dust control systems were designed, fabricated, and evaluated. The first, a hollow cutter bar, was designed to capture dust in the kerf at the cutting zone. The system was only marginally effective in reducing dust levels due to its lack of control of other sources. Large quantities of material captured by the system made it operationally questionable. The second, a machine mounted exhaust system, was extremely effective in capturing virtually all the dust generated in the heading. The captured dust was ducted out of the heading and exhausted downstream in the crosscut. Exhausting the dust without scrubbing, however, creates problems for personnel working downstream of the cutting machine. Successful application would require changes to the mine ventilation system and mining sequence. The third, foam, injected foam from an onboard generator through a channel to the cutting zone at the tip of the bar. Test results showed that foam, using 1/3 to 1/2 the total fluid quantity, was equally effective when compared to the mine's current water system.

TONNAGE of natural abrasives sold or used in the United States in 1959 increased 12 percent. Artificial abrasives produced in the United States and Canada jumped 24 percent. This report on the properties of burner-fuel oils produced during 1956 was issued under a cooperative agreement between the American Petroleum Institute and the Bureau of Mines, United States Department of the Interior, at the request of the Oil-Heat Institute of America and the petroleum industry. This survey is the second for this type of fuel, the first being made in 1955. 2/ The surveys are conducted to provide information on the characteristics of burner-fuel oils now manufactured for sale. They are similar in pattern to the diesel-fuel surveys, conducted since 1950, 3/ and are not intended to conflict with but rather to supplement them. The importance of fuel oil has resulted in the need for more information by the petroleum industry, manufacturers of heating appliances, and consumers regarding the types and qualities of the fuels currently being marketed. Samples of burner-fuel oil typical of their manufacture during the early part of 1956 were analyzed by the refiners in accordance with instructions from the subcommittee on fuel surveys of the Automotive Research Committee of the American Petroleum Institute, Results of the analyses were transmitted to the Bureau of Mines where the data were studied and compiled as shown in the tables of this report.

THIS IS a progress report on a study of the application of statistical practice to mine and mineral sampling undertaken by the Federal Bureau of Mines to provide sound theoretical and practical data for use of the mineral engineering professions. One of the problems in mine sampling is determining the reliability of the results. For certain types of sampling data (random data) the reliability of the results can be stated mathematically. For other types of data there is no known means of quantitatively expressing reliability. In applying measures of reliability to a set of random data, some knowledge or assumption of the characteristics of the particular data is necessary. In many fields these characteristics are well known. However, in mining, where the data are in assays, these characteristics are not well known.

From the time when man first pounded one rock upon another or used heat and sudden chilling with water to disintegrate rock, the art of crushing advanced but slowly to the mule-driven arrastre and the Chilean mill stage until the advent of power-driven appliances made material progress possible. The combined efforts of manufacturers and operators have made modern machines highly efficient mechanically. Although marked progress has been made along mechanical lines, the theory and conception of underlying principles have not advanced so rapidly. This lack of advance in theory may be attributed to the unfortunate situation resulting from the controversy as to whether the Rittinger or the Kick law is applicable to crushing. Many pages of the technical literature are burdened with theoretical discussions in favor of one or the other of these laws, which have tended to cloud rather than to clear the atmosphere.

"IntroductionThe Bureau of Mines was established in the public interest to conduct inquiries and scientific and technologic investigations concerning mining and the preparation, treatment, and utilization of mineral substances; to promote health and safety in the mineral industries; to conserve material resources and prevent their waste; to further economic development; to increase efficiency in the mining, metallurgical, quarrying, and other mineral industries; and to inquire into the economic conditions affecting these industries. The organic act of the Bureau, as amended by Congress and approved February 25, 1913, made it the province and duty of the Bureau to ""disseminate information concerning these subjects in such manner as will best carry out the purposes of this Act.""In accordance with this directive, the Bureau reports the findings of its research and investigations in its own series of publications and also in articles that appear in scientific, technical, and trade journals; in proceedings of conventions and seminars; in reference books; and in other non-Bureau publications. The number of these reports, the wide range of subjects they cover, and the variety of mediums in which they appear make the kind of list and index presented in this special publication both necessary and valuable. This issue describes reports and articles published during the period January I, 1965, to December 31, 1969. It supplements the 50-year list of Bureau publications issued from July 1, 1910, to January I, 1960;' the 50-year list of articles by Bureau authors published outside the Bureau from July 1, 1910, to January I, 1960;3 the 5-year list of Bureau publications and articles from January I, 1960, to December 31, 1964.' This report is the 18th in a series summarizing Bureau of Mines research and technologic work on coal and related investigations. The previous 17 reports have covered fiscal years, but this report covers not only the fiscal year from July 1, 1952, to June 30, 1953, but also July through December 1953, to bring the report to a calendar-year basis. Most of the material in this report relates to publications issued during the reporting period, Some work is mentioned briefly on which publications have not yet been issued or on which data are riot expected to be published, for security or other reasons, and in a few instances publications issues before the reporting period but not included in the previous report are mentioned.3/ Further details on the published work described herein may be found by referring to the publications cited in the footnotes. During the reporting period, the Bureau directed its research and technologic work on coal toward developing end encouraging increased conservation and more efficient use of our mineral fuel resources through more efficient and safer mining methods and improved methods of preparing and utilizing these fuels. Some significant advances, particularly in coal-mine safety, mining methods, and development and utilization of low-rank coma have been made.

Three filter cloth fabrics commonly used in drains for coal waste embankments were tested by the Bureau of Mines for clogging behavior and deterioration under simulated field conditions. The objective was to provide guidelines for the mining industry for the proper selection and use of filter cloths to assure safer embankments at mine waste disposal sites. The filter cloths were tested with three coal waste samples in stand-pipes used to simulate coal mine waste disposal environments. Two of the cloths showed a tendency to become clogged with fines from the wastes. One waste caused clogging by precipitating an iron-silicon compound on the test cloths. No apparent cloth deterioration resulted from exposures to the simulated coal waste environments. (The exposures ranged from 2 to 12 months.) In other tests, exposures to waters in the pH range of 2 to 12 and to reagents used in coal-preparation plants resulted in insignificant or no deterioration, as measured by tensile strength. However, long exposures to sunlight (ranging from 4.6 to 6 months) caused major deterioration in two of the cloths (86-and 98-pct losses in tensile strength) and slight deterioration in the third cloth (9-pct loss in strength).

The Aluminum Co. of America raised its 99.5 percent unalloyed aluminum ingot selling price in March by 34 to 514 per pound. Other producers, including Kaiser Aluminum and Chemical Corp. , Anaconda Aluminum Co. , and Reynolds Metals Co., followed Alcoa's lead, raising their quotes to 51$. In late March, domestic merchants quoted ingot at levels ranging between 49.56 and 50.50 per pound. BISMUTH: Several domes tic dealers lowered their bismuth prices in recent weeks by 50t-606 to within a range of $5.60-$5.75 per pound; producers continue to hold published prices at $7.50.

A study of the accident statistics in the coal mining industry convinces one that an organized effort must be put forth to prevent the vast destruction of human life in this industry . The fatality rate in Pennsylvania has not improved in the past several years and during 1928 it was higher than the average for the period 1916 to 1927 , inclusive . Although the accident rate for this State is less than that of the coal mines of the United States as a whole , nevertheless the rate is unduly high ; however , there are many companies which have exceptionally good records as regards both fatal and nonfatal accidents . A study of the methods used by some of these relatively good- record companies to reduce accidents in their mines shows that they exert an organized effort to prevent accidents , and that their safety organizations usually affect every employee in and about the mine from the highest official to the check boy . The chief executive must be actively and personally interested in accident prevention if real safety results are to be obtained ; when he shows this interest it is almost invariably reflected in the officials under him and throughout the organization . Safety organizations vary in form and are readily changed or adapted to the varying conditions found in the bituminous field . The companies whose organizations were studied in preparing this report are all getting good results , and it is their opinion that the safety organizations have been a big factor in obtaining these results . At their request the identity of some of the companies whose organizations were studied has not been divulged in this paper , but this does not affect the value of the information concerning their safety organizations .

THE Synthetic Liquid Fuels Act (30 U.S.C., 321-325, and amendments) become law April 5, 1644, and a period of intensive research and development in this field was begun by the Bureau of Mines. As part of this program bulletins were published on a pressure hydrogenation,3 the Fischer-Tropsch synthesis,4 and oil shale.5 The Bureau also has published a short bibliography on coal gasification,6 mostly of a theoretical nature. Because coal gasification is prerequisite to Hither the Fischer-Tropsch or coal-hydrogenation processes, publishing this sizable, collection of technical information in this form will be valuable. The material is presented in three parts, as follows: I. United States Patents. II. United Kingdom, Australian, Canadian, and South African Patents. III. Belgium, French, German, Italian, and Swedish Patents. The domestic patents for this bulletin were collected between 1963 and 1955. Some of the Foreign Patents were collected at the same time and a few of them later in 1961. Part I was published in 1960; Part II was published in 1962.

Flame safety lamps have been used in gaseous mines since the Davy lamp was introduced, more than 100 years ago. During the last decade the flame safety lamp has been rapidly replaced by the electric lamp as a device for illuminating the miner's working place; in the United States the electric cap lamp has been widely adopted. For example, in 1911 approximately 45,000 flame lamps and no electric lamps were being used in the Pennsylvania bituminous mines, which were then producing 35 per cent of all the soft coal mined in this country; by 1918 the flame lamps had decreased to 17,000, whereas electric lamps-mostly of one maketotaled nearly 48,000. In Great Britain during the same years the total of 723,934 flame lamps decreased to 590,185 and the electric lamps gained rapidly from 4,298 to 156,521. No later reliable figures are at hand. However, before the flame lamp becomes obsolete, it is fitting that the Bureau of Mines compile a permanent record of a device which has served the mining industry for more than three generations, and not only made possible the development of entire districts that otherwise could not have been worked but undoubtedly saved the lives of thousands of underground workers. Flame safety lamps are capable of doing more than the name indicates. First, under normal conditions, they can be used in a mine atmosphere that contains an explosive mixture of gas and air without great danger of exploding such a mixture, though such use of a flame lamp should not be permitted. Second, to an experienced man they indicate percentages of gas much lower than the explosive limit, and thus can be used to indicate to workers the approach of an unsafe condition in the mine atmosphere. Third, flame lamps will not burn in an atmosphere greatly deficient in oxygen, and they therefore warn the users of such deficiency in time to withdraw to a place of safety. Flame safety lamps are still used rather widely in the United States for general illumination and to a still greater extent for detecting gas. Many coal-producing States require fire bosses to use these lamps in gaseous mines, and the regulations of several States specify that a gIven number of such lamps be kept available for emergency service.

Brown iron ore resources in Barbour, Butler, Crenshaw, and Pike Counties were investigated in a drilling program and geological study by the Federal Bureau of Mines in cooperation with the Alabama Geological Survey and the University of Alabama. The aggregate footage drilled was 18,010 linear feet. When developed, reserves of 12,664,000 long tons of crude ore were indicated, containing from 26.9 to 29.0 percent iron and 0.2 to 1.6 percent manganese under a maximum overburden of 40 feet. Total inferred crude ore for the four counties was calculated to be 827,700,000 long tons. Beneficiation of samples by simulated log washing and use of a 118-inch screen yielded from 46.8 to 51.7 percent iron and 0.2 to 2.6 percent manganese. Screen-test studies indicated no appreciable interlocking between the iron and manganese minerals and the waste particles of materials retained on a 200-mesh screen. Clay was prominent in micron-size slimes. Silica was deleterious in the minus 20-mesh size. While an indicated 2,198,000 dry long tons of usable iron ore can be recovered, sink-and-float tests show that it may be possible for 4,654,000 dry long tons to be recovered by other than log washing. However, applicable commercial processes have not been demonstrated.
