Australian regulatory control of ground vibration and airblast arising from mining, quarrying and civil construction operations is spread across a number of federal, state and local authorities and across a number of departments with various jurisdictions. The Australian Standard AS 2187.2 contains an informative appendix on damage-related criteria and it is the primary reference for the regulators. The complete standard and the informative appendix is currently undergoing major revision with a focus for the latter on implementing frequency-dependent criteria for ground vibration. Certain directions for change have been raised for consideration by the standing committee, ranging from fundamental issues of measurement and interpretation and others that overlap human comfort criteria. It is anticipated that some of the suggestions will eventually make their way into future standards after an adequate period of consultation and consideration by both the Australian public and others involved in the associated industries.

The long awaited arrival of a high accuracy detonator to reach the explosives end user will provide new opportunities the blasting community to become better equipped and able to improve upon the current approaches and methodologies used in blast design as they apply to the mitigation of adverse effects from blasting. This paper will detail the approach and findings throughout a several month research project to quantify the high accuracy detonator benefits and to mitigate a long standing vibration problem at a hard rock stone quarry in the state of New York. The tests conducted in this study were designed to provide important information as to the relationship between the use of high accuracy detonators and overall blast performance in terms of ground vibration prediction, control and improved rock fragmentation.

In this paper, the model of optimizing selection on preparation of Powdery Emulsion Explosives(PEE) is established by the Neural Net Theory(NNT). On the basis of some data in the study of PEE, the training, prediction and optimizing selection of the Neural Net (NN) model are finished by a compiling procedure. It is a well-known industry fact that many mine sites around the globe experience blast holes that have elevated temperatures due to reactive ground, geochemical reactions, geomorphic reactions, sub level open fires, etc. It has been reported in many previous industry publications (White, Saputra et al) that elevated blast hole temperatures are a norm at many mine sites and are dealt with on an ongoing basis while the drill and blast process continues under elevated states of alert. The choice of explosives products including the type of detonator, primer, accessory, and bulk product all must be taken into consideration when loading blast holes where there is a known potential for elevated temperature conditions. It should also be noted that these elevated temperatures inside blast holes can be consistent throughout the blast hole length or vary in position within the blast hole depending on the mine conditions mentioned in the opening statement above. The risks associated with the loading of primers and bulk explosives in holes where elevated temperatures are present include: the ejection of the bulk explosives product, deflagration of the explosives during initiation of the blast or premature and uncontrolled initiation of a blast hole(s). This paper describes a unique and novel approach to the active monitoring of the temperature within blast holes with the application of electronic detonators with integrated temperature measuring (ITM) capabilities, deployed and demonstrated at a mine site in Mexico during January 2023 to March 2023. The deployment of ITM capable electronic detonators allows a user to monitor and record the real time temperature at multiple locations (e.g., toe, middle and collar) at each electronic detonator’s position within the blast hole, with the ability to react instantaneously to elevations in temperature reported. The measurement of the temperature can be for a single ITM electronic detonator, or simultaneous for an array of ITM electronic detonators, allowing for the potential for the data to be represented by a time/temperature/hole depth three-dimensional heat map. Changes in temperature at different borehole positions can vary, however, often the collar position is expected to be the most reactive due the combination of bulk explosive product and oxygen exposure, which can be confirmed with the application of the ITM electronic detonators. A mine site’s reaction to a measured elevated temperature within a blast hole can vary depending on the temperature measured and the change in temperature from the last measurement made. The study was found to produce real-time in-hole temperature information which was previously unobtainable without the introduction of another device. New and adaptive elevated temperature hole policies can be created and adapted proactively as real time information is received, leading to a safer mining operation.

Measurement of rock fragmentation has evolved from a completely subjective and manual process to a statistically objective and semi-automated process. However, ultimately, the vision is to achieve a statistically representative and fully-automated process. From the blast optimization perspective, it is critical to receive reliable rock fragmentation results quickly to incorporate into the planning of subsequent blasts. Since manual rock fragmentation measurement methods tend to be time consuming, a fully-automated method is the practical way to meet these requirements.

Tracking ore characteristics such as grade and hardness from its original position into the material handling and processing stages remains one of the key challenges in open pit mining of hard rock deposits. The most efficient technique for rock fragmentation and separation of ore from waste is blasting, which induces changes in the grade distribution by displacing the in-situ ore into a diggable muck pile. Material movement defines the post-blast grade distribution, which is key to optimising the value of the ore and accounting for ore loss and dilution. Techniques to directly measure the displacement in open pit mining have been implemented routinely and have provided calibration and validation data for blast models to build upon. The JK Value-Based Ore Control blast movement model (JKVBOC) is the latest development of a series of research studies into blast movement and ore control at the Sustainable Minerals Institute of the University of Queensland. The blast model discretises the bench into blocks, defines the initial velocity of each block based on the blast design, confinement and explosive properties, and simulates the displacement using a physics engine. Calibration and validation of the model has been performed in open pit hard rock mines in Australasia in diverse confinement conditions. This paper describes the calibration and validation of the blast movement model against direct measurements of blast movement and final muck pile shape for a case study where the displacement of multiple shots was modelled for an open pit mine, with an analysis of the implications for ore loss and dilution. A key finding in this study is the need for further integration of this technology into the existing systems for ore control, and the potential for applications in tracking ore characteristics other than grade into process control.

As the harbor's importance grew, attempts to improve the channel were made, starting in 1851. This paper discusses the first major organized effort to clear the area, which began in 1869 and culminated in a single large blast in September 1876.

This paper describes a numerical modeling study on the effect of airdecking on vibrations, fragmentation, and movement in mining-related rock blasting. Practice has shown that air gaps reduce blast vibrations and damage while maintaining the required fragmentation and movement, yielding similar blast outcomes with less explosive mass per hole. Given that the premise of “replacing explosives with air” for better blast results is counterintuitive, this paper aims to shed light on the physical mechanisms and processes occurring in a blast with airdecks. It is hypothesized that airdecks are effective and beneficial because they load the rock at pressures lower than what is required to crush the rock. In the airdeck, the explosive gasses directly fracture rock and avoid energy loss due to crushing. In essence, the airgap allows similar outcomes in fragmentation and throw with less total explosive product, as the lower pressure gasses in the airdeck are still effective at breaking and moving the rock. This is distinct from only having less explosive and more stemming, as the stemming reduces the pressure more than an airdeck at the same position. This study uses the blastFoam software (for modeling of single and multiphase flows) to accurately calculate the pressure history throughout a blasthole and air gap. The pressure and gas loading are coupled to numerical models of vibration, fragmentation, and blast movement. Using this modeling technique, a suite of blast scenarios for typical configurations in a range of commodities is assessed with and without airdecks. Rock blasting practitioners have a responsibility to protect communities, infrastructure, and heritage — demystifying airdecks through a better understanding of the physics provides another tool in the blasting engineering toolkit to serve this goal.

BHP’s Navajo coal mine installed drill monitoring and high precision navigation systems on their three overburden drills during 2002 and 2003. Details of the DrillNav system hardware and reporting system will be discussed, as well as the significant benefits Navajo has achieved since the systems were installed. Navajo is not satisfied with the current results and plan additional upgrades to the systems. In addition, Navajo plan to integrate the data from their drill systems with data from other systems to achieve even greater increases in drill productivity and to reduce overall mining costs.

Rendering safe explosives in an urban environment presents a unique challenge due to the safety concerns and disruption to the general public. Potential damage to the surrounding homes, businesses, utilities and transportation infrastructure are some of the major concerns when planning the render-safe operation. Engineering controls to mitigate blast effects, such as damaging air over pressure levels, material ejection and ground borne vibration, need to be implemented as part of the operation. Monitoring of seismic and air overpressure during these operations are needed to protect against potential claims when controlled or unplanned detonations occur. Two recent render-safe operations conducted in and around urban environments dealt with deteriorated, sensitive dynamite and damaged blasting caps. Utilizing innovative neutralization chemicals and processes to render-safe the deteriorated dynamite, while protecting the general public, proved to be the safest, most environmentally responsible and cost-effective way to approach the problem. In both cases, the explosives, old dynamite and detonators were found in abandoned, unlocked magazines. The dynamite was in a significantly deteriorated state, which was evident due to the nitroglycerine found leaking in,around and under the dynamite cartridges. Iron wire permissible electric blasting caps were also found in a corroded condition with exposed explosives and un-shunted lead wires. With occupied buildings within 180 feet (54.86 meters) of the magazines, any procedure (e.g. transporting, countercharging, burning) that could potentially cause a detonation was not an option. In the event of an unplanned detonation during neutralization operations, several blast mitigation methods were employed to safeguard the site. This operation and a similar one with over 1,000 pounds of crushed and buried leaky dynamite were unique since all the explosives were rendered-safe and neutralized on site. The use of advanced neutralization products and filtering processes allowed for a safer, more environmentally responsible way to resolve the problem. The magazines and all residual solids and fluids were tested and confirmed by independent labs to have no explosives residues. The effluents were treated on site, tested and met safe levels, so they were disposed of at a local municipal wastewater facility.

Recent advances in digital recording technology have allowed frame rate increases in video recording equipment that provide the capability for super slow motion playback of commercial explosives shots. Such slow motion playback allows for the analysis of shot patterns, cap scatter, pattern failures, etc. In addition, the availability of such materials on video tape enables commercial blasters to provide a means for training current and future staff.

This paper describes results from small scale tests conducted to determine the distribution of pressure on target plates when subjected to loading due to the detonation of a buried mine in various media. The tests are conducted by using saturated sand, dry sand, and water as the loading media. Different stand-off distances are investigated. Kolsky bars and pressure sensors are used to determine the free-field pressure - time profile of the output of the charge at any location on the vehicle bottom. For verification of the pressure results at certain distances, the specific impulse measured by utilizing different size round plates are employed. In order to investigate the loading mechanisms, high speed cameras are applied. The small-scale test results can be scaled to full scale by using verified scaling laws.

After European Council’s Directive 93/15/EEC of 5 April 1993 on the harmonization of the provisions relating to the placing on the market and supervision of explosives for civil uses, the so called ”Intra-Community Transfer of Civil Explosives” has been possible between users in the member States of the European Union. In line with this new approach, the placing on the market and the supervision of explosives for civilian use are subject to essential safety requirements. The explosives market in Italy is regulated by the ”day consumption of explosives” that imposes the user to have on site just the strict quantities of explosives and accessories that are necessary for the daily drill and blast activities. Any eventually advanced explosives’ quantities should be destroyed, either returned to the provider’s magazine until the 24:00 hours of the same day.

This contribution addresses the advanced blasting technology which is based on wave propagation theory and fracture mechanics. The new concept of sonicity and the principle of maximizing sonicity in blasting as well as the energy or work of a blast operation will be introduced. It is shown that - in contrast to common belief – it is not the velocity of detonation which controls the blast but the relationship between velocity of detonation and the wave speeds, in other words, the Mach numbers of the blast operation. Based on numerous practical blasts in Germany, the authors show that, when using wave dynamic concepts, there is a linear relationship between peak particle velocity and the work of a blast operation and this linear relationship is controlled by the sonicity of the blast. Extensions to layered and faulted rock masses are presented. It will become clear that a second change of paradigm is enforced, the first one being the implementation of short time delaying. Again, the acquisition of knowledge in wave progation theory and fracture mechanics becomes mandatory in advanced blasting technology, where the art of blasting is now fully transformed into a science of blasting with little room for methods of trial and error.
