Calaverite is a gold telluride found in the Kalgoorlie region, Fiji, Cripple Creek Colorado and numerous other locations. It is known that a high pH is necessary for calaverite cyanidation, with the leach rate increasing substantially above pH 12 due to the hydroxide ion concentration. In most circumstances lime is used to achieve high pH, however lime saturates at approximately pH 12, limiting the maximum pH obtainable in a critical region for calaverite leaching. Plant observations, laboratory experiments and thermodynamic modelling show that the maxi-mum hydroxide ion concentration that can be achieved with lime (CaO) is strongly dependent on common ions. The presence of calcium, as commonly found in saline waters, substantially diminishes the maximum pH that can be obtained with lime. Conversely the presence of sulfate ions, as generated through oxidation of sulfides, substantially increases the maximum pH that can be achieved with lime. Sulfide oxidation during cyanide leaching of complex ores may generate acid and sulfate ions, making overdosing with lime at the front of the circuit, or staged addition down the leach train, important to maintaining the maximum hydroxide concentration.

The multi-gravity separator (MGS) is a novel piece of equipment for the separation of fine and ultra-fine minerals. However, the published literature does not demonstrate its use in the separation of Iron ore fines. Therefore, an attempt was made to study the effects of different process variables on the performance of an MGS for the beneficiation of Iron ore fines. The results obtained from this study revealed that among the parameters studied, drum rotation, amount of wash water and angle of inclination play dominating roles in controlling the yield and grade of the Iron ore. The majority of the newly developed Multi gravity concentrators have tremendous potentials for various applications. Therefore, the performance evaluation of these concentrators treating various minerals, coals, heavy metal recovery from tailing dams, etc., have become an active research topic. Several attempts have also been made to develop appropriate mathematical models of individual concentrators. Despite all these efforts, these concentrators have yet to find the widespread applications they deserve. The ?as received? sample assayed 40.80% Fe, 40.90% SiO2,0.24% Al2O3and 0.20 % LOI and all other trace elements within the specified range. The current paper deals with the Mineralogical studies, characterization and process amenability studies of Sub grade Iron ore from Deposit No. 5, Bacheli complex of Bailadila using Multi Gravity Separator (MGS).

The paper presents a way of determining relations between ash content in coal, particle size and particle density by means of regression, multidimensional Morgenstern distribution functions and kernel approximation. The three-dimensional random vector (D, ?, ?), where D is a random variable describing particle size, ? - random variable describing particle density and ? - random variable describing ash content, where function ?=?(d, ?) is obtained by means of regressive function. The multidimensional Morgenstern distribution functions and kernel estimators with the use of Gauss function were applied to approximate the functions f(d, ?, ?) and f1(d, ?). This approach is a new way of multidimensional description of grained materials such as coal and it also allows to evaluate material features more properly than the classical statistical approach. The results were verified statistically.

Low-grade ore bodies, increase in rock competency, finely disseminated valuable minerals in the ore bodies, ore variability and water scarcity are among the technical challenges faced by the mining industry. These challenges have increased the business risk, capital investment and operating cost of the mining projects. Since the last 20 years, many large-scale concentrators have been built to cope with the above-mentioned challenges. Comminution, especially the fine grinding is an energy-intensive process. For example, the ball mill has a limitation in the fine grinding regime where the energy consumption increases exponentially when the product size is below 45 µm. The industry has been seeking for solutions that have a minimum risk and total cost of ownership. The stirred milling technology such as the TowerMill is well accepted by the industry as it has demonstrated the attributes required for fine grinding. TowerMill is a matured technology that has been adopted since the 80s for regrinding duty. Recently, this technology was installed in secondary and tertiary grinding duty to prepare a finer feed to rougher flotation. Four units of TowerMills were installed in a magnetite concentrator in Western Australia in tertiary grinding duty. Recently, Nippon Eirich has conducted process performance evaluation on the TowerMill circuit. The outcome of the exercise had indicated that the circuit is consuming 3.4 kWh/t to reduce from 55 µm to 35 µm with a narrow product size distribution. The effect of operating variables such as the specific energy, grinding media size, mill content % solids and mill feed configuration on the grinding efficiency were evaluated at the plant scale. Furthermore, the scale-up methodology was validated. The scope of this paper includes the performances of TowerMill and the validation of scale-up methodology.

"A pilot test campaign was undertaken to evaluate dense medium cyclone separation efficiencies on samples of iron ore fines (-1mm +300µm). Evaluations were done using both gas and water atomised FeSi types across a range of operating conditions in the presence of slimes build-up. A Mineral Liberation Analyser (MLA) was used to measure size, density, shape and liberation data of DMS feed and products. The results of the test work were used to obtain parameters for modelling of the partition size/density response. The findings indicated that accurate density characterisation of the feed ore is essential in understanding product quality and recovery, particularly due to the effect of porosity and micro-inclusions. A significant off-set between cyclone underflow density and separation cut-point (D50) was found indicating that relatively low feed media densities (about 3.4g/cm3) are required to achieve high density cutpoints of over 4.0g/cm3. In agreement with CFD modelling, the separation quality is dominated by viscous effects, hence FeSi type and slimes content will need to be carefully controlled to ensure efficient separation.INTRODUCTION In the South African context, future resources of hematite are expected to be both of lower head grade and will contain a higher content of banded iron formation (BIF) (1). These ores may require finer crushing in order to liberate the high-grade fractions and will thus increase the amount of -1mm material to be processed. In order to efficiently upgrade these materials, it becomes necessary to re-examine both traditional and novel processes to treat material finer than 1mm in size. These include spiral and up-current classifiers, wet high intensity magnetic separation processes, Reflux classification and potentially includes dense medium separation (DMS). This study presents a technical evaluation of fines DMS using a mineralogically-based particle tracking analysis method (PTA) to calculate efficiencies of separation."

During the phosphating of car bodies containing aluminium, the employed phosphating chemicals zinc, manganese and nickel are, for thermodynamic reasons, only used to a limited extent for the desired surface coating. The major proportion of these metals is discharged together with the incidental cryolite-containing phosphating sludges and the rinse water. Commissioned by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF), the Institute of Mineral and Waste Processing, Waste Disposal and Geomechanics at the Clausthal University of Technology has developed a two-stage process for the production-integrated recovery of the dragged out chemicals and for closing the rinse water cycle for Audi AG. During the first stage, the phosphating chemicals are recovered by means of leaching. In the second stage, the rinse water is treated by means of electroflotation followed by an ion exchanger.

"Particle size measurement is one of the most important factors in obtaining peak performance of the mineral processing plant in order to ensure efficient milling and flotation circuit operation. Off-line particle distribution analysis technologies only allow an infrequent check of the ore slurry size and hence do not allow for timely process monitoring or intervention. Most existing on-line particle size analysers suffer from a variety of disabilities such as poor statistics, non-representative sampling or mechanically complex setup. This paper will describe an Ultrasonic Extinction based method which overcomes many limitations of existing online analysers and has proven its performance for mineral applications over many years. Installation examples will be given. Since new technologies usually raise e questions about comparability and agreement to common particle size analytical methods e.g. sieving or laser diffraction analysis, extensive studies were performed comparing these different technologies to quantify the quality of results as well as its mathematical robustness."

The present study investigates the nature of gold mineralogical distribution and association in a Cu-Au flotation circuit (1.6 g/t Au, feed head grade). The approach used in this study involves a combination of bulk gold assay and quantitative X-ray diffraction (QXRD), on a size-by-size basis, followed by QEMSCAN analysis on the -75+53 µm, -53+38 µm and -38+20 µm size fractions. The QXRD and QEMSCAN analysis showed that gold mineralogy is complex and fine-grained in the flotation feed, particularly in the -38+20 µm size fraction. Gold and pyrite concentration follow each other closely, suggesting gold-pyrite association. Quartz as the major gangue mineral shows a bi-modal distribution with respect to particle size. The identified gold particles were completely locked (~94 %) in pyrite as fine inclusions and 6 % locked as complex aggregates (-75+53 µm size fraction) whereas in the -38+20 µm size fraction, the identified gold grains occur as fine inclusions (~1-3 µm) within pyrite and silicates. However, in the intermediate size fraction (-53+38 µm), 75 % of the identified gold grains (10-22 µm) were over 90 % liberated and 25 % associated and locked in pyrite and complex aggregates (~2-4 µm). The identified gold grains in the -53+38 µm size fraction occurred as native and electrum with varying silver concentration between 8 and 20 % by weight. In the -38+20 µm size fraction, a gold telluride was also identified. Based on the mineralogical analysis of the feed, possible flotation strategies are discussed. Despite the fact that nickel (Ni) laterites accounts for about 60 % of the world?s nickel mineralization, commercial processing of complex, low grade Ni laterite ores by conventional beneficiation (e.g. magnetic, electrostatic and flotation separation) still presents intractable challenges, particularly in heap leaching. Invariably, low grade laterite ores require aggressive hydrometallurgical techniques (e.g., highly acidic lixiviant leaching at ambient or elevated temperatures) for Ni and cobalt (Co) extraction. As a precursor to heap leaching, agglomeration of the multi-mineral phase feed particles into robust and porous granules of 4-10 m permeable bed, is essential. In the present work, several basic and applied studies of the agglomeration behavior of real Ni laterite ores and selected oxides and clay minerals (hematite, quartz smectite and kaolinite) which constitute the predominant host gangue phases of typical laterite ores are performed. Isothermal, batch agglomeration tests involving sulphuric acid solution as a binder were carried out to produce coarse, narrow-sized (5 ? 40 mm) granules which were well characterized. The influential role of feed ore characteristics (e.g., mineralogy/chemistry and primary particle size distribution) and binder composition (30 vs. 44% w/w H2SO4) and dosage (15-25 wt.%) in agglomeration behavior and granule properties were examined through several characterization techniques including granule size, compressive strength, bed percolation and re-wetting stability and 3-dimensional micro-structure analyses. Links between feed mineralogy/chemistry and size, binder formulation, agglomeration behavior, curing conditions and final granule properties and structural characteristics are established. The implications of the findings to Ni laterite plant agglomeration for enhanced heap leaching are discussed. "A lot of floatation reagents (collectors, inhibitors and regulators) for the beneficiation of copper ores have been well developed in the past century. However, it is still unclear about the micro interaction mechanism of these flotation reagents with copper ores. In this paper, the interaction mechanism of these flotation reagents with the copper atom on chalcopyrite has been systematically investigated by first principle DFT (density functional theory) calculations. Thirty-four specific common functional groups linked with the same hydrocarbon chain (ethyl) are optimized at a B3LYP/def2-TZVP level, the solvation effect was included with the SMD solvation model. The analysis of the highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO), the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) and nature bond orbital (NBO) charge of these reagents reveals their potential applications to other types of copper-bearing mineral. Further investigation of the thermodynamics calculations gives more reliable data to screen collectors or inhibitors for copper-bearing mineral. The flotation results from carefully reviewed literatures are in good agreement with the calculation results. This work might also shed new light on the development and discovery of highly efficient and selective flotation reagents with low cost based on the computational methods.INTRODUCTION Froth flotation,(Shean & Cilliers, 2011) a mineral processing approach, is applied to efficiently enrich valuable minerals from the mixture, which is achieved according to the dictinctive surface properties of minerals. In the past century, researchers have develped an aboundant of flotation reagents by extraction or synthetize, and many carefully selected reagents might die in the bench tests or the pilot tests before the pratice.(Bulatovic & SrdjanM, 2007) Generally, it involves a lot of cost and tedious works by conducting flotation tests to screen flotation reagents. Flotation reagents have been boomed robustly with the developing of the organic synthesis.(Liu, Yang, & Zhong, 2017) Reseachers found the specific properties of a reagent are determined by its functional groups and the length of the hydrocarbon, where the functional group is assigned as the adsorption site to adsorb onto mineral surfaces and the hydrocarbon chain is called as a hydrophobic group."

Flotation gases and conditioning of the pulp with them are one of the important parameters of flotation and should be taken into account especially in the flotation of sulphide ores. In this study, flotation of pure chalcopyrite and pyrite samples were investigated with air, oxygen and nitrogen as flotation gas and the effect of conditioning with these three gases also were performed. Flotation gas was introduced for 5min, 10min, 15min and 20 min. For chalcopyrite flotation there was no drastic change in recovery when air, oxygen and nitrogen were used as flotation gas but conditioning the pulp with oxygen for 10 minutes increased the recovery about 8% where pulp potential has been approximately 25 mV with chalcopyrite and 150 mV with platinum electrodes. Conditioning with all three gases decreased the pyrite recovery by about 20% with 20 minutes conditioning. Pulp potential decreased in the presence of nitrogen while conditioning with air and oxygen increased the pulp potential for both electrodes. Generally potential increased for both minerals with oxygenation and aeration time but it was stable or slightly decreased with nitrogenation. Comparison of the gases showed that the different flotation gases do not effect flotation recovery but conditioning the pulp with these gases at pre-flotation effects chalcopyrite and pyrite flotation recovery, most dramatically pyrite.

Bioleaching of marmatite with various mixed cultures of microorganisms was investigated. The experiments were carried out in shaking flasks with iron-free nutrient and the pulp density of 10% wt/vol at the temperature of 30?. The results show that zinc is preferentially leached before iron. The leaching rate of zinc with the mixed culture of Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans, Acidithiobacillus thiooxidans and Leptospirillum ferrooxidans is 62% in 18 days. The leaching rate of zinc with the mixed culture of Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans and Acidithiobacillus thiooxidans is nearly the same as that with the mixed culture of Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans and Leptospirillum ferrooxidans (45% versus 50%). SEM and EDX analysis of the leaching residues indicate that a solid product layer composed of iron sulfide, elemental sulfur and jarosite accumulates in the mineral surface and becomes a barrier to the dissolution of marmatite. The bioleaching of marmatite follows the shrinking core product layer model. When the product layer increases and becomes insoluble, the leaching rate is controlled by the diffusion through the product layer and slows down. When the product layer decreases or becomes a porous layer, the leaching rate is controlled by chemical reaction and enhanced dramatically.

The physico-chemical interaction between minerals such as olivine, chromite and serpentine and the ions most commonly present in solution, like Ca and Mg and flotation reagents such as EDTA and oleic acid was investigated. The study was conducted via release tests, electrophoretic measurements and microflotation of selected minerals coming from the Kukes deposit (Albania). The results were confirmed by means of beneficiation tests on various types of ores, from the Kukes (Kalimash), from Bulquiza area and from the Rizo deposit (Greece). It has been demonstrated that when Na-K Oleate is used as collector chromite, olivine and serpentine can be separated at pH = 2.5 and/or 5.5 employing EDTA (EthyleneDiamineTetraAcetate) on previously deslimed material. This approach ensures flotation concentrates with a Cr2O3 content about 50%, at a recovery in excess of 65%.

"The aim of the study was to develop and implement more efficient dialkyldithiophosphate collectors. A hypothesis has been formulated on the action of dialkyldithiophosphates in the flotation of sulphide ores based on the assessment of their complexing properties and surface activity at the liquid-gas border. Dialkyldithiophosphates form weaker complexes with cations of heavy metals compared to xanthates, and are characterized by a large difference in the strength of their complexes with heavy metal cations. It provides higher selectivity of dialkyldithiophosphates in the separation of non-ferrous metal sulphides and iron sulphides from them. To make a quality assessment of the impact of surface activity of the synthesized collectors on their selectivity of action and collecting power, an assessment of the surface tension of their aqueous solutions has been performed using the stalagmometer method. It is well known that a stronger collector is characterized by a greater surface activity, in contrast to a more selective collector which is characterized by a lower surface activity. Based on studies, new dialkyldithiophosphate collectors BTF 163 and BTF 1552 are suggested for use in the flotation of sulphides to increase the recovery of copper, gold and silver. The collector BTF 163 was introduced at a gold processing plant in Kazakhstan and has been undergoing industrial testing in the sulphide cycle of scheelite-skarn-sulphide ores in a factory in the far east of Russia. The collector BTF 1552, which increases the recovery of silver and gold by 3%, was approved for industrial testing in another far-eastern factory. A modification of the reagent BTF 1552, the new reagent BTF 1522, was introduced in the flotation of copper-zinc ore at a factory in Kazakhstan."

The preparation technological conditions and regeneration method of two novel granulated adsorbing materials of rectorite/fly ash composite (Material 1) and rectorite/water quenched - slag composite (Material 2) and the use of them to remove heavy metals from copper smelting plant wastewater have been studied. The experimental results showed that under the preparation conditions with the ratio of rectorite to fly ash or water - quenched slag of 1:1, the amount of the additive (Industrial Starch, IS) of 15% (Material 1) or 10% (Material 2), the addition of 50% water, and the calcination temperature of 500? (Material 1) or 400? (Material 2), the efficiency of heavy metal removal with the granulated materials was the best, whereas the ratio of disintegration loss was the lowest. Under the treatment conditions of natural pH, and with the addition of the granulated materials of 0.07g/cm3 (Material 1) or 0.05g/cm3 (Material 2), a reaction time of 60 minutes (Material 1) or 40 minutes (Material 2), and the adsorption temperature of 25?, the efficiency for the granulated materials to remove Cu2+Pb2+Zn2+Cd2+ and Ni2+ from the copper smelting plant wastewater was 98.9, 97.5, 96.7, 90.2, and 79.1, (Material 1) or 98.2, 96.3, 78.6, 86.2, and 64.2, (Material 2), respectively, and the quality indexes of the wastewater after treatment conformed with the first level of integrated wastewater discharge standard (GB8978-1996). When the adsorption of heavy metal ions on the surface attained saturation the granulated materials could be regenerated by washing with 1 mol/L sodium chloride (NaCl) solution and still with quite good heavy metal removal efficiency. The granulated adsorbing materials had the advantages of high efficiency of wastewater treatment, easy method of solid-liquid separation and regeneration, and a broad prospect of applications.

Newmont Batu Hijau operates with an accelerated mining rate to optimize life of mine (LOM) project economics. This results in a portion of ore mined being stockpiled for reclaim and processing throughout, and at the end of mine life. LOM economics can be further enhanced by preserving stockpiled ore value by mitigating oxidation effects. A detailed stockpile ore oxidation study was conducted to: ?? Develop a practical understanding of how oxidation affects ore value; ?? Determine how oxidation rate can be controlled, and; ?? Determine how oxidation effects can be mitigated to preserve ore value. The result of the study is a stockpile management strategy that significantly reduces oxidation related losses and, implementation of that strategy within practical constraints. Implementation includes installation of Controlled Potential Sulfidisation (CPS) flotation to facilitate oxidised sulfide copper recovery and, recovery of dissolved copper from stockpile drainage solution into saleable product. This paper describes the study results including managing and predicting stockpile oxidation with time, monitoring performance of implemented CPS flotation and recovery of dissolved copper from stockpile drainage. These are essential elements of successful long term mine operation in Batu Hijau.

This paper describes, in detail, results obtained from a research study of a complex iron ore aiming to produce a pellet feed concentrate with at least 65% of Fe and less than 3.5% of SiO2 in the final concentrate. The work includes an ore desliming followed by column flotation at laboratory scale. The ore sample was from Carajás province - Brazil and represents a complex low grade compact itabirite ore, analyzing 35.9% Fe, 45.1% SiO2 and 0.57% of Al2O3. Yet, the feed was treated previously by magnetic separation and grounded to 97% < 20 µm; this sample was named MAG 2. The chemical and mineralogical characterization of the MAG 2 sample showed that Fe and SiO2 grades were 50.7% and 24.3% respectively and was composed mainly by hematite, goethite and quartz. The particle size distribution, using a laser diffraction technique, showed that 90% of the particles were < 18 µm; 50% less than 8 µm and 10% minor than 1 µm. When the cationic reverse flotation without desliming was tested the selectivity of the process was very low and did not meet the concentrate metallurgical goals of the pellet feed product. However, when desliming was applied prior to flotation, a concentrate product with chemical characteristics of the pellet feed was obtained. The best results after desliming and column flotation achieved global iron metallurgical recovery of 72% with Fe grade in the concentrate of 66.5% and 2.1% SiO2 using starch as depressant for the iron oxides minerals at 1200 g/t ? 1500 g/t and an amine as the quartz collector at 100 g/t concentration (pH constant, at 10.5). It is believed that the desliming stage was key in the separation of the iron bearing particles and has a high potential for the flotation process of this type of ores.

Vertical ring and Pulsating Wet High Intensity Magnetic Separator (VP-WHIMS) is widely used for week magnetic mineral beneficiation or ferrous impurity removal from non-metallic minerals. Because of the complexity of this machine, mathematical modelling of its process is complicated and time consuming. In this paper, artificial neural network (ANN) and response surface methodology (RSM) were applied to evaluate the VP-WHIMS performance and optimize its main operating parameters in beneficiating of the Chadormalu hematite sample. The operational parameters of this magnetic separator are considered as: magnetic field intensity (2500-8500 gauss), pulsating frequency (20-100 %max), ring rotation speed (0.6-4.6 r/min) and slurry concentration (15-35 w/w %). Concentrate grade and recoveries (weight and Fe) are monitored as responses. Centre composite design (CCD) was used for experimental study. Four process variables were set using small CCD. Eight star points (a=±1), eight axial points (a=±2) and five replicates at the centre point (a=0) were chosen as experimental points. In ANN system, the best network topology was obtained as (4-5-3). "Pyrrhotite in nickel-copper sulphide ores is nickeliferrous and intimately associated with pentlandite. Due to its low nickel content, pyrrhotite rejection is an important step in processing of these ores. In our laboratory, various reagents were investigated for their effect on pyrrhotite depression. Among these, a combined use of triethylenetetramine and sodium metabisulphite was found highly promising.The work described in this paper has two parts. The firs part is a summary of results obtained on process samples from the pyrrhotite rejection circuit at Falconbridge’s Strathcona Mill. The second part involves simulation of the circuit performance based on the reagent conditions used in the experimental work and the concept of split factors.Two sets of reagent conditions were evaluated. The first one involved baseline conditions, simulating the current reagent performance. The second one simulated the impact these new reagents can have on the circuit performance.The simulation results obtained under baseline conditions indicated a good agreement with the current circuit performance. The simulation results suggest that at practically the same pentlandite recovery and tailing grades, the circuit concentrate nickel grade can be doubled through effective pyrrhotite rejection by these new reagents."

This investigation was carried out with low grade Murgul-Cakmakkaya copper ore once used to be dumped away as waste material. Sulphide minerals in the ore sample observed are chalcopyrite, pyrite, sphalerite and to some extent molibdenite; quartz, calcite and dolomite are the gangue minerals. The ore sample assays 0.28% Cu, 2.94% Fe and 3.36% S. Mineralogical study of the ore sample showed that adequate liberation of chalcopyrite for flota-tion was achieved below 100 µm. In flotation tests Aerophine 3418-A was the collector employed, NaOH or Ca(OH)2were the pH modifiers. Deactivators used were sodium meta bi-sulphide, starch, dextrin and lime. MIBC was the frother used throughout the tests. Test results showed that starch alone was the most suitable depressant to give the optimum metal content and recovery val-ues.
