"The Whitewood Mine near Edmonton, Alberta, is owned by TransAlta Utilities Corporation and operated by Manalta Coal Ltd. Approximately 2 million tonnes of sub-bituminous coal is supplied annually to the Wabamun Generating Plant. A high water table, high groundwater pressure, and structural folds contribute to stability problems in the fine-grained overburden. Significant increases in coal recovery have been achieved in recent years through improvements in water management and mining methods. Agricultural capability of the post-mining landscape has also been improved following the completion of mining/ reclamation activities. Introduction The Whitewood Mine, located to the north of Lake Wabamun and seventy kilometres west of Edmonton, Alberta, is owned by TransAlta Utilities Corporation and operated by Manalta Coal Ltd. Figure 1 shows the location of the Whitewood Mine with respect to the city of Edmonton. The mine presently supplies two million tonnes annually of sub-bituminous ""C"" coal to the 582-megawatt Wabamun Generating Plant located adjacent to the mine. The area is characterized by a high water table-, rolling coal seams and an overburden that consists of muskeg, clay and various sedimentary layers of sand, gravel and fine-grained sandstone. These distinctive characteristics require careful attention in order to not only meet the coal delivery requirements of the Wabamun Generating Plant but also to do so economically. Modelling the geometry of a vein is a crucial step in resources estimation. The resulting models are used as mineralization domain boundaries and have a direct impact on the tonnage of estimated resources. Deterministic models are often built using time consuming wireframing techniques usually based on hand interpretation of the drillhole intercepts. Another approach consists in coding the drillhole samples by a function of their distance to the veins contacts. The coding is subsequently used for modelling the vein contacts away from drillholes. This is a more efficient approach and is able to provide a measure of tonnage uncertainty. The use of location-dependent variograms improves the modelling by incorporating local changes in the anisotropy of the vein structure. This combined approach results in more realistic vein models, particularly when the geometry of the vein has been are altered by folding, shearing and other structural processes. The approach is illustrated on a realistic case study.

PUBLIC attention was first attracted to the Crow River area of north-western Ontario by the discovery of gold in 1928. The first three discoveries were eventually developed into Central Patricia, Pickle Crow, and Albany River mines. In 1929, preliminary developments were carried out at the Howell vein on N.A.M.E. (later Pickle Crow) claims, and in 1929 and 1930 surface and underground work indicated an ore-body at Central Patricia mine. However, due to the financial depression and the distance of these properties from the railway, it was not until 1934 and 1935 that, benefitted by the revaluation of gold, the real potentialities of these two properties began to be realized. Their immediate success led to a resumption of activity on neighbouring properties throughout the area in 1936 and 1937. Preliminary prospecting in the earlier period had been limited by the scarcity of rock exposures in the country. The procedure in the recent programme of intensive exploration has been along similar lines at most properties and has consisted lf detailed geological mapping accompanied by geophysical surveys and followed by systematic drilling of favourable zones. The present importance of the camp may be judged by the fact that, in 1937, Central Patricia and Pickle Crow mines together produced bullion valued at $3,662,953, and paid $1,450,000 in dividends. In addition, there were pro-mising gold developments at Albany River mine. During the past two seasons, the Geological Branch of the Ontario Department of Mines has been making a fairly detailed study of the geology and mineral deposits in the Crow River area. It is the purpose of this paper to present a brief statement of some of the structural features of these deposits; a summary of other geological information essential for the understanding of the main topic is included. A more detailed report on the area will be published shortly by the Ontario Department of Mines. It is impossible to make full acknowledgment here for all help received, for the writer is in-debted to the management, staff, and consultants of every Company in the camp for generous co-operation in the field and for information, plans, maps, and records placed at his disposal. High sulphur carbonaceous materials like petroleum coke and rubber tyre are unsuitable as reductants in ironmaking because part of the sulphur is transferred to the reduced metal. Globally, while large amounts of petroleum coke are produced annually from the industrial processing of crude oil, billions of end-of-life rubber tyres are held in landfills and stockpiles. This work therefore investigates the potential feasibility of utilising these high sulphur carbonaceous materials as reductants in ironmaking without transferring the sulphur into the reduced metal. Composite pellets of iron oxide containing end-of-life rubber tyre (RT), petroleum coke and blends of RT/petroleum coke and petroleum coke/high density polyethylene (HDPE) were heated under argon atmosphere in a horizontal tube furnace. Reduced pellets were analysed after 10 minutes of reduction for their sulphur content. The results showed that sulphur-free metallic iron can be successfully synthesized using RT and petroleum coke as reductants. The level of desulphurisation depends on the nature of blending of the carbonaceous materials.

"The Duthie mine is on the southwest slope of Hudson Bay mountain 7 1/2 miles west of Smithers, British Columbia. A good motor road about 15 miles long connects the mine with the Canadian National railway at Smithers. The principal workings are on the Henderson group of claims between elevations of 3,200 and 4,000 feet above sea-level. Silver, lead, and zinc were produced from this mine between 1924 and 1930.Three adit drifts known as the Compressor, McPherson, and Thompson levels were driven along the Henderson vein-lode in 1922, and the following year the operating company, known as Duthie Mines, Limited, shipped some high-grade silver-lead-zinc ore. Further shipments of high-grade, handsorted ore were made in 1926, and in 1927 a modern flotation-type mill was built, having a capacity of 50 tons of ore a day. Mining operations were suspended in March 1930."

The increasing size and complexity of mega construction projects result in having several geographically distributed stakeholders, collaborating with each other to successfully deliver the project. Electronic Product and Process Management Systems (EPPMS) are recently emerging to facilitate the collaboration between stakeholders, reduce the surprises and issues, and improve the project productivity. These are commercially successful but evolving systems. An important component of EPPMS is the Interface Management System, which aims at formalizing and automating the communication channels between stakeholders. An interface is generally considered the link between construction elements, phases, or stakeholders. An interface Management System (IMS) involves five iterative steps: (1) Interface Identification, (2) Interface Documentation, (3) Interface Transferring, (4) Interface Communication, and (5) Interface Closing. A fundamental part of step 2 is recognizing different roles in dealing with interfaces. Each stakeholder is assigned a different role, such as responsible, accountable, consulted, and informed. In a mega project, several thousands of interfaces exist with complex relationships between stakeholders. Therefore, identifying stakeholders with higher responsible roles has been requested as useful information to the project owner in dealing with some of the project risks. After the interfaces are determined, and the responsibilities are allocated, the critical stakeholders are identified using the centrality concept in Social Network Analysis. The critical stakeholders can be determined at the highest level, considering all types of interfaces, as well as for each specific type or discipline-related interfaces. The proposed methodology is applied on a hypothetical offshore project with over 500 interfaces. In fact, this project is a simplified representation of a real scale Liquid Natural Gas project. In order to reduce the complexity of calculations and clarity of explanations, the simplified case study is used. By implementing IMS in mega projects, different parties not only formalize the communication between each other, but also gain better visibility concerning their roles and responsibilities. In addition, the owner benefits from analysing the complex relationships between stakeholders to further identify critical ones, along with other criteria like package cost, stakeholders? experiences, etc.

“O-SR process” in which the S-Furnace of the Mitsubishi process is followed by existing reverberatory furnaces (RFs) and Peirce Smith (PS) converters has been operated since December 2007. The S-Furnace smelts copper concentrates to produce molten matte containing 58-62%Cu which is then settled in the RFs and converted to blister copper in the PS converters. The SO2 gas generated from the S-Furnace and PS converters is converted to sulfuric acid in the acid plants. In addition to the smelting copper concentrates, the O-SR process has advantages in terms of recycling various waste/secondary materials. Automotive Shredder Residue (ASR) has been treated in the RF to reduce fossil-fuel consumption in RFs, and to recover various metals included in ASR as well, since 1993. Electronic circuit boards (E-scrap) has also been processed in order to recover not only copper but also rare resources such as gold, silver and PGMs since 2013. Strategic modifications have enabled expansion of the processing volume of E-scrap. Enhancing recycling of wastes and scraps from urban mines while reducing the consumption of natural resources in the “O-SR” process will be demonstrated and discussed in the present paper. INTRODUCTION Onahama smelter and refinery has been operating as a custom smelter since 1965. Smelting facilities were subsequently expanded to two green-charged RF furnaces and five PS converters in 1973. Since RF is a conventional old-fashioned smelting furnace that necessarily consumes a huge amount of fuel to smelt copper concentrates, saving fuel cost has been an important objective. In early 1980’s the fuel was changed from bunker oil to pulverized coal, while utilizing the combustion heat of waste tires. Furthermore, treatment of combustible waste such as shredder residue (SR) was initiated in order to save fossil fuel for smelting concentrates in the RFs. Since enhancing of the treatment of SR requires a reduction in concentrate smelted in the RFs, most concentrates were dried and injected through tuyeres into the PS.converters. These modifications enabled to reduce the amount of the pulverized coal combustion and to increase SR treatment in the RFs. SR treatment capacity has increased to 12,000mt/month because the SR market has grown after the enforcement of the Vehicles Recycling Law. Such business environment has been attributed to establish the thermal-materials recycling system of SR in which the RFs have changed their role from copper concentrates smelting furnaces to waste materials combustion furnaces.

Abstract - A simple linear model for interpreting duplicate analytical data for a range of values is described. The conceptual model can be quantified using a reduced major axis model rather than the inappropriate traditional least squares approach. The reduced major axis parameters (slope, intercept) and associated errors provide a quantitative basis for: (1) defining bias, and (2) comparing results within laboratories, between laboratories and between sampling/analytical methods. Application of the linear model must be preceded by extraction of obvious outliers or small groups of values that have an inordinately large impact on values of the statistical parameters defining the model. In addition, consideration must be directed to the presence of more than one population of sampling error, as in the case of multiple styles of mineralization being sampled.

"The Michipicoten-Goudreau area, bordering on the northeast corner of lake Suferior, has had a tectonic history related to that of the geosyncline occupied by this lake. This basin has been a major structural feature in the Canadian Shield since at least late-Precambrian time. It has been extensively faulted and was the centre of great igneous activity in the Keweenawan feriod . Many of the faults, folds, dykes, and sills in the surrounding regions tend to head directly or indirectly into this basin. Some of the faults in the Michipicoten-Goudreau area appear to run under the eastern part of lake Superior just as the large Keweenaw fault in Michigan extends into the lake on the south side. Some of these faults may even be extensions of or counterparts of the faults on the south side of the lake. Another set of faults in the Michipicoten-Goudreau area runs nearly transverse to some of these major faults, and it is evident that in some places movement has recurred at a later time on faults formed in an early period.STRATIGRAPHYThe rocks of this area, with the exception of Pleistocene and Recent formations, are all Precambrian:"

The CO oxidation reaction has been studied on Au/TiO2 catalysts prepared by incipient wetness (IW) and deposition-precipitation (DP) methods. Additionally the assessment of activity was also conducted on simple gold compounds (Au2O3 and Au(OH)3) and their physical mixtures with TiO2. We have found that there are three types of CO2 production from fresh catalysts, which are only dried, namely: Non-catalytic Type I (low temperature CO2 production); Non-catalytic Type II (higher temperature CO2 production) and Catalytic Type III. The DP catalysts are far more active for Type III reaction, showing activity already at room temperature, whereas the IW catalysts generally do not show steady state conversion until T>673 K. This is due to both large particle size and the presence of residual chlorine for the latter. No truly catalytic activity was found for low temperature CO oxidation on gold precursors on their own, although both Au2O3 and Au(OH)3 react well with CO even at room temperature in an irreversible manner (Type I reaction). Despite that, catalytic activity was obtained by mixing Au(OH)3 or Au2O3 with TiO2 which gives further emphasis on the importance of a good contact gold/support and the absence of chlorine.

Abstract-Exploratory data evaluation is an essential part of every high quality, mineral inventory estimate. Efficient analysis involves a thorough organization of available quantitative data that are the basis of the estimate and perhaps the formation of composite grades. Data organization and evaluation can involve more than 50% of the time necessary to conduct a mineral inventory estimation. The principal purpose of exploratory data evaluation in mineral inventory work is to improve the quality of estimation by providing insight into characteristics of the variables under investigation. Specific aims include: (1) to recognize and eliminate errors; (2) to provide a comprehensive knowledge of the statistical characteristics of all variables of interest for resource/reserve estimation; (3) to document and understand the interrelationships among the variables of interest; (4) to recognize systematic spatial variation of variables such as grade and thickness of mineralized zones; (5) to recognize and define distinctive geological domains that require independent estimation of mineral inventory; (6) to identify and characterize outliers; and (7) to evaluate similarity/dissimilarity of various types of raw data, especially samples of different supports. These aims are not mutually exclusive but they can all have their own impact on resource/reserve estimation. Error must be minimized. Individual variables can have characteristics that lead to different decisions in the course of estimation. Similarly, interrelations of variables might contribute to the ease (or difficulty) with which estimates of several variables can be obtained. Trends can impose the need for two or more domains, each of which might be estimated independent of the others. Outliers, a perennial problem, require detailed evaluations because they impact on reserves much out of proportion to their abundance. Data, of widely different supports, generally must be standardized if all are to be used for purposes of estimation.

The mining and metallurgy industry is known to be of cyclical nature associated with price volatility. As such, some years are quite lucrative and other years require mining companies to tighten their belts. The field is a mix of junior, mid-tier, and major mining companies. One thing that is common to all of them is the time required and the cost to develop a flowsheet in accordance with best practices. Although a long list of factors can impact flowsheet development, this paper will include the impacts of: experienced metallurgical engineers and laboratories, representative samples for high quality and valuable testwork results, and following engineering development stages. The paper also provides typical time frames to complete selected engineering flowsheet development steps.

Arsenic levels in metal concentrates are increasing as mining companies turn to developing low grade and complex ores. When arsenic bearing minerals are smelted, arsenic deports as gases which must be neutralized by a scrubber system. The resulting scrubber effluent is high in dissolved arsenic and requires treatment before the wastewater can be discharged or re-used. Conventional arsenic removal relies on lime addition followed by calcium arsenate formation and precipitation as hydroxides. As an alternative, arsenic removal with sulphide precipitation is receiving more attention due to potential advantages of the technology. Process streams high in arsenic often contain concentrations of dissolved metals that may be selectively recovered during sulphidization, producing a product that can be reprocessed and reducing waste generation. This paper will review laboratory testing completed for arsenic removal through sulphide addition and precipitation of arsenic (III) sulphide in combination with metals recovery to offset arsenic removal costs.

In this work we study how to incorporate risk control to the generation of ultimate pits when orebodies are modeled through a finite number of conditional simulations. To control risk we consider a chance constraint on the value of the ultimate pit. We incorporate this measure into the generation of ultimate pits by solving a stochastic programming version of the ultimate pit problem. We compare this stochastic programming problem to previous approaches such as generating the ultimate pit for each simulation and the hybrid pit approach introduced by Whittle and Bozorgebrahimi. We also study the effect of using different number of simulations in the generation and evaluation of ultimate pits.

NCFRDFs profile should change with variations in cash flow uncertainty since the risk adjustments applied to the project cash flow reflect investor sensitivity to uncertainty.?DCF and RO will often produce different NCFRDFs for the same project since they use different methods of risk-adjustment.

The Au/?-Al2O3 catalyst prepared by AuCl3 impregnation is subjected to the influence of residual chlorine after an oven drying. A post-impregnation NH4OH treatment was able to eliminate chlorine, and to reduce the cluster size of Au moiety. However, the CO oxidation activity was not increased by this post-impregnation NH4OH treatment. This suggests that certain metal-support interaction (MSI) is the determining factor for the activity of Au catalysts. Thermal treatment under H2, O2 or He was attempted to increase MSI of the prepared catalyst with or without the post-impregnation NH4OH treatment. No significant activity enhancement was found but the TPD analysis suggests that a H2 treatment has a higher chance to induce MSI.

The Úrkút rhodochrosite deposit and Branisko Mn showings (rancieite, manganiferous calcite), located in Lower Jurassic marine sedimentary rocks with black shale, were studied by organicgeochemical methods. Both depositional localities were affected by the Lower Jurassic Toarcian anoxic event. UrkUt shales are rich in organic matter (av. 2.94 wtOJo total organic carbon), the composition of which indicates derivation mainly from marine sources, with some terrigenous component. The shales matured in a bacterially active environment under reducing conditions of diagenesis-catagenesis. Branisko shales (~0.2 wt % TOC) with lenses of Mn oxide ore were weakly metamorphosed and their organic matter thermally degraded. The model for Mn carbonate ore formation envisages reaction of Mn derived from sediments, with carbonate generated by a bacterially mediated process of decomposition of organic matter that also involved Mn reduction.

"This paper briefly reviews some of the gravity research done at McGill University and current Canadian operating practices, with emphasis on results of interest for operators. The following topics are addressed: security, economics, predicting recovery, circuit optimization, unit selection and final upgrading. Emphasis is placed on the Knelson Concentrator.The topic of security and economics are addressed jointly, in terms of the place of the gravity circuit in the mill flowsheet. Actual plant experience is drawn upon to identify potential problems and actual solutions.Predicting primary recovery is linked with a characterization of the ore, the choice of a circuit, and the fraction of the bleed used. Factors such as feed preparation, preliminary upgrading, fraction of recycle treated, ability to recover fines and location of the bleed are discussed.Final upgrading is achieved almost only by tabling and smelting. This can lead to fine gold recovery problems when more effective units are used upstream. Alternatives are discussed.IntroductionResearch on gold recovery by gravity over the past eight years has associated McGill University with a number of gold producers. "This paper describes the application of a radioisotopic energy dispersive X-ray aY1alyser to complete on-stream analysis in a base metal concentrator.The major components of the system are outlined and some description of the application, operating experiences and benefits are provided.IntroductionThe ma1n intent of this paper is to describe the on-stream analysis system in operation at the Geco concentrator. X-ray analysis systems installed in Canadian concentrators to-date may be broadly classified as wavelength dispersive analysers whereas the installation described herein is an energy dispersive x-ray analysis system. Energy dispersive x-ray analysis techniques may utilize radioactive sources to provide primary x-rays for excitation of elements and separate the secondary x-rays on the basis of energy levels. In contrast wavelength dispersive analysers apply high voltage x-ray tubes to provide primary x-rays and utilize crystals to disperse and thereby separate x-rays generated by bombardment of the sample."

There are currently two operators producing oil from the surface-mineable portions of Alberta?s oil sands (Syncrude Canada Ltd. and Suncor Inc.) and two other companies are proposing to enter the industry (Albian Sands in 2002 and True North in 2004). Tailings from the two current oil sands plants contain approximately 220 000 tonnes per year of recoverable TiO2 and approximately 80 000 tonnes per year of recoverable zircon. This represents approximately 6% of the world?s TiO 2 consumption and approximately 9% of the world?s zircon production. With the commissioning of plants by Albian Sands and True North, and the announced expansion of plants by Syncrude and Suncor, it is expected that these tonnages could quadruple in the next ten years. All of these operators have at least 50 years of reserves even at these expanded production rates. The occurrence of heavy minerals in Alberta?s oil sands has long been known and is well documented in the literature. There have been a number of attempts to produce market-grade products from this resource and the results of this work have been quite mixed. Typically, researchers have used the normal mineral dressing techniques of the industry and have found the mineral assemblage does not respond to these techniques all that well. This has led to the widelyheld suspicion that there must be some difficult metallurgical problems associated with this resource. There are three main problem areas that have created difficulties for previous researchers: 1) The bitumen coating on the sand grains; 2) Secondary mineralization such as pyrite, siderite and calcite 3) A high proportion of aluminosilicates (approximately 25%) that have the same gravity, electrostatic and magnetic properties as other minerals in the heavy mineral suite. Recent work by Lakefield Research shows that these problems can be largely overcome with some novel approaches. The bitumen can be removed by washing with a solvent in the presence of a demulsifier. The pyrite can be removed by flotation. And the titanium and zircon minerals can be separated by selective flotation followed by conventional electrostatic and magnetic separation.
