Chalcopyrite (CuFeS2) and enargite (Cu3AsS4) are among the most important copper sulfides. At present, many known deposits of these minerals are uneconomic to process because they are of too low grade, insufficient size or too remote to be cost effectively treated with conventional technologies that can deal with their refractory nature. Therefore, developing an effective, low cost extraction process for recovery of copper from them is important. The research presented in this paper will deal with potentially cost effective strategies involving catalysed processing, studied under conditions relevant to recycle heap leach conditions. The present account summarises some of the main findings from the research program carried out at Murdoch University between 2014 and 2018 that has investigated the effects of the common leaching parameters, major and minor species present in the leach system and additives on the rate and extent of copper extraction from low-grade ores, in which primary copper sulfide minerals such as chalcopyrite and enargite were the dominant copper minerals. The study involved batch leaching tests, detailed structural and mineralogical characterisation and thermochemical modelling under conditions relevant to heap leaching. The results have demonstrated that silver in particular has a strong catalysing effect on the extraction of copper from ore under the leach recycle conditions and, at an adequate dosage, can effectively overcome surface passivation, enabling almost complete extraction of copper from chalcopyrite as well as enargite. The aim of this paper is to present the effect of the studied additives and to briefly elaborate on the mechanism of the silver catalysed leaching process. In addition, the presence of certain secondary agents was shown to lower the critical dosage of silver and promote extraction. The data from the study allowed the development of a theory for the silver catalysed reaction mechanism, which enables further optimisation and cost-effective application of this strategy in practice. INTRODUCTION Researching the extraction of copper from chalcopyrite is important as it is the most abundant copper mineral in the earth’s crust. The majority of ores containing this mineral are processed by flotation to produce a concentrate, followed by smelting and electrorefining. However, most reserves available nowadays are of low grade or limited in size, and therefore not suitable for this conventional approach. Hydrometallurgical processing via heap leaching with or without the aid of bacteria has been shown to be potentially economical. Chalcopyrite is refractory though and suffers from slow leaching kinetics and poor overall extraction, so understanding the mechanism of how it leaches has received significant attention by researchers working in this field over the past 50 years. The refractoriness, which is the main issue with the hydrometallurgical approach, is generally described as passivation of the chalcopyrite surface whereby a surface coating is formed that blocks the reaction interface or wetting of the chalcopyrite, limiting the copper extraction. Exactly what this layer is made of or how the issue could be overcome has been the subject of intense study and debate for many years. One of the limitations of the work to date is that much of the research focus has been on typical initial leaching conditions, while there has been relatively little research into how the leaching is affected under recycle solution conditions where certain metal ions (Fe, Mg, Al) have often accumulated in the liquor. This occurs because the leach solution exiting a heap contains many species from the dissolution of gangue minerals and typically this solution is returned to irrigate the heap, once the copper has been removed, leading to an accumulation of these species.

"Most mining operations utilize the tailings coarse fraction for backfilling while the fines have been traditionally disposed on surface in tailings ponds. Recently, paste fill has been developed which uses a fraction of the fine tailings (10-30% w/w of <45 µm) in the fill (Brummer and Moss, 1991). This development allows a mining company to use a portion of the fines for backfill, but still requires surface impoundment of the unused tailings. Reactive tailings have the added problem of generating acid after being oxidized in the presence of air and water. Treating acid mine drainage (AMO) from these ponds has proven to be a costly environmental problem and a long term liability.One practical method to reduce the environmental impacts associated with the tailings pond is to modify the physical and chemical prope1ties of the fine tailings so that they can be utilized in an environmentally safe manner. This was accomplished by agglomerating the tailings into pellets and using theses pellets as a coarse aggregate in a total tailings paste fill. This technology does not require any supplemental sand or gravel to be added to the fill.This paper presents the ongoing research into utilizing these tailings agglomerates as a coarse aggregate fraction, in order to create a total tailings paste fill which has supe1ior strength characteristics.IntroductionThe Canadian mining industry produces more than 500 million tonnes of tailings and waste rock annually. The waste rock is usually returned underground for use as rock fill in underground support with the tailings remaining to be disposed of in tailings ponds. Tailings consist of a coarse and fine fraction, and can be either reactive (acid generating) or non-reactive. In an effort to minimize tailings disposal, the coarse fraction has been used underground in backfill along with alluvial sands. This diversion of the coarse fraction, however still requires that the fine fraction be disposed of in tailings ponds. This disposal creates the potential for acid mine drainage (AMO), since in the presence of air and water, reactive sulphide tailings can generate acid. It is therefore an important goal in the mining industry to minimize the disposal of fine tailings into tailings ponds since the treatment of AMO is a costly and long-te1m environmental liability."

An investigation was carried out by Mintek to investigate the influence of a range of alloying additions (vanadium, cobalt, zirconium, antimony and germanium) on the formability and hardenability of alloys with gold content >90 wt%. This paper reports on the hardening mechanisms that can be utilised to increase the hardness of gold (>90 wt% Au) by conventional alloying, as well as the hardening effect obtained by alloying with specific elements. Preparation methods for the alloys are described, which include the steps of melting, annealing, quenching, cold working and age hardening. Focus is given specifically on alloys that were developed at Mintek with a gold content >90 wt%, which are not only harder, but exhibit good resistance to tarnishing and corrosion.

During the past few years, synthetic efforts have been addressed to the synthesis of polymeric materials with optical or semiconducting properties or even with capabilities to act as sensors for volatile organic compounds (1). The most recent studies have been concerned with the synthesis of heterometallic systems with short metal-metal interactions and the determination of their optical properties. These complexes are undoubtly interesting from a theoretical viewpoint and include an emerging class of luminescent materials, in which the observed luminescence results mainly from the interactions among the different metal centers, as well as the environments of these atoms. The understanding of the photophysics and photochemistry of these products could permit the design of complexes with appropriate metals and ligands chosen for individual applications. Following a synthetic strategy consisting on reactions between acid heterometal complexes and basic gold precursors we have succeded in synthesizing supramolecular assemblies formed via acid-base stacking, which display tunable luminescence or selective and reversible sensitivity to Vapour Organic Compounds (VOC?s) (2-5). In this sense, in accord with previous Mössbauer studies carried out in the gold precursor complex [AuR2]- (R = C6F5), the basic properties of this and related materials have been employed as building blocks of supramolecular assemblies in their reactions with complexes in wich the metallic centers act as lewis acids as, for instance, Tl(I) or Ag(I) (6). For instance, in the case of silver, by reacting equimolecular quantities of [NBu4][Au(C6F5)2] with AgClO4, in acetone, a solid of stoichiometry [Au2Ag2(C6F5)4(OCMe2)2]n is obtained. The polymeric nature of this material in solid state is confirmed through X-ray analyses (figure 1). It consists of polymeric chains formed by repetition of Au2Ag2 moieties linked through short gold-gold interactions. Nevertheless, in solution, the nature of this polymeric materials was still a matter of controversy and, in this case, the optical properties have been shown as useful tools in order to obtain information. Thus, while dilute acetone solutions of this complex give a emission coming from pentafluorphenyl localized ??* excited states, in accord with the presence of isolated tetranuclear Au2Ag2 units, when the measurements are done at different and higher concentrations, a band that does not obey the Lambert-Beer law appears. This deviation is consistent with molecular aggregation in solution of these units through gold-gold interactions, and a clear correlation between the emssion wavelength and the structure in the solid state and in solution is shown (figure 2). DFT calculations accord with the observed experimental behaviour and show the nature of the orbitals involved in each transition.

An extensive testwork was performed around the HPGR plant at GoldFields Ghana Limited Tarkwa Gold Mine. The HPGR was used to prepare the feed for heap leaching. The circuit was configured in such a way that the edge material from the HPGR discharge was recycled for further crushing while the product from the centre reported to the heap leach section. The set-up of the Polysius HPGR provided an opportunity to study the effect of different design and operating variables. This paper will discuss the results from the tests performed to assess the effect of rolls’ speed and applied pressure on the capacity and the grinding efficiency of the HPGR. Applying different pressure values appeared to have an influence on the amount of edge material recycled.

This paper examines manning best practice in the Australian mining industry. In particular, the paper considers a range of mining operations and their manning levels as measured by operational benchmarking. The benchmarking results presented cover 15 open pit and 37 underground studies in Australia. The data was collected as part of AMC?s benchmarking and operational improvement studies conducted between 1999 and 2008. The results examine overall manning levels in mining, processing and administration functions. Manning levels for a range of mining methods, including open pit and underground methods, are segmented. Productivity measures such as ore tonnes per man day and metres developed per man day are presented and where direct relationships can be established, the relationships are described. Finally, the paper considers perspectives on best practice with regard to manning in the Australian mining industry and the limitations in application of this type of analysis in a global context.

The traditional approach to managing information flow between a mine underground and overground, applied in copper mines of KGHM Polska Miedz S.A., is mostly based on exchanging spoken information using the mine telephone network and printed documentation. This way of information flow significantly influences effective use of time of a shift foreman employed at a mining division. In order to minimise multiplication of significant information generated as paper documentation, a concept of an IT system module to input basic data concerning operation of the mining division was developed. The idea is based on computer software that permits inputting data in the underground and their immediate sending to the overground. The above-mentioned solution will permit significant reduction of administrative work time that each foreman has to do on each shift. The time saved on filling forms and communication will permit the foreman and the other workers involved in information flow to spend more time for execution of their basic duties. In the case of the supervision employees working in the overground, the IT system will allow all the interested persons to be informed directly, with no necessity to transfer the information on the situation in the given mining division by turns from one to another. On the other hand, saving time on administrative works will permit the foreman employed in the underground executing more detailed inspection of workplaces in his subordinate mine division. Thus, availability of the foreman for the mining division operation will be improved. KEYWORDS

The development of contact angles on highly polished ?uraninite surfaces, using sodium oleate and dodecyl ammonium acetate as collectors, has been studied at different collector and hydrogen ion concentrations. It was found that sodium oleate in acidic media (up to a neutral: PH) and dodecyl ammonium acetate in neutral and alkaline media give good contact angles. It appears that the combined forms of these collectors, viz., oleic acid and free amine, are more important in effecting contact. W ITH the emergence of uranium as a strategic metal in the last fifteen years, considerable effort has been directed toward the commercial recovery of uranium from its ores. This has resulted in the development of a uranium technology. It is only in recent years, However, that fundamental data regarding the floatability and surface properties of uraninite and ?pitchblende have been elucidated by different methods. "A comprehensive software package has been developed at the Western Research Centre to meet many of the coal preparation requirements in the Canadian coal industry. This package performs three main functions: (1) data handling and manipulation; (2) data analysis, including the generation of washability data, performance evaluation and prediction, density and size modelling, evaluation of density and size partition characteristics, and attrition curves; and (3) graphics output.The software described in this paper is potentially a valuable tool for coal preparation plant engineers and operators for evaluating process performance and adjusting plant density separator cutpoints. Moreover, the analytical laboratory technician could find this package very useful in manipulating and presenting laboratory results."

Many technologies have been adopted over the last half century for the haulage of material from open pit mining operations. Some of the technologies utilized include rail, off-highway trucks, conveyors, and slurry pipelines - each having its unique application and benefits. Over time, truck haulage has become the primary means of surface mine material movement, though recently it has been plagued by problems of tire shortages, high diesel fuel costs, labour shortages, and carbon emissions. This paper focuses on In-Pit Crushing and Conveying (IPCC) as a competitor to truck haulage which has the potential to solve many of these problems. An overview of the available technology is presented along with measures required to overcome perceptional if not physical barriers to implementing this technology in modern open pit mines.

"Cobalt refining at Vale Canada (previously known as Inco) has been associated with Ni production. Because certain compounds of both metals carry risks for adverse health endpoints by inhalation exposure, it is critical to understand the aerosol concentrations of specific substances and the metallurgical processes through which they enter the air. Vale Canada has therefore decided to describe the histories of its Ni-related operations and to report industrial hygiene measurements when available. This paper describes electrolytic Co operations carried out at Port Colborne, Ontario (1954–1966), and provides aerosol measurements (1995–2008) for current Co electrowinning operations.RÉSUMÉ L’affinage du cobalt chez Vale Canada (anciennement Inco) a été associé à la production de nickel. "Chairman - To start this discussion off, I wonder if Mr. Dave Livingstone or Mr. Jeffrey of Granisle Copper would give a description of the crushing plant at Granisle since it is somewhat different from the usual plant, W. N. Jeffrey - Granisle Copper The main difference between the Granisle crushing plant and many others is the Livingstone method of putting the screens under the crushers instead of above them. This method allows a more compact arrangement and eliminates the heavy superstructure required to take care of the screen vibration when the screens are mounted above the crushers. There is a small surge bin above the tertiary crusher which takes care of the variation in circulating loads.All three crushers are gyratory crushers. There is no grizzly ahead of the primary crusher but the fines are removed from the primary crusher discharge at the first screen and sent directly to the fine ore bins. "Over forty years of uranium mining in the Elliot Lake region of Ontario (I 956-1996) has resulted in the production of over 300 million pounds of uranium. With the completion of mining activity, Rio Algom Limited and Denison Mines Limited are utilizing progressive environmental technologies and management systems to reduce and manage the environmental risks associated with the 150 million tonnes of potentially acid-generating tailings in nine regional waste management areas. Water covers designed to reduce oxygen entry and thereby significantly inhibit acid generation have been applied at six of the sites with the Quirke site serving as a demonstration site for the Mine Environmental Neutral Drainage program. All five of Rio Algom Limited' s effluent treatment plants are monitored and controlled from a central control station utilizing a Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) system based on ""Fix Dmacs"" technology. Scheduling, auditing and reporting of plant operating and environmental monitoring programs for the entire watershed are controlled utilizing the Regional Environmental Information Management System (REIMS). Proper application of these technologies and management systems facilitates delivery of cost-effective environmental monitoring, care and maintenance programs at these sites and provides tools to demonstrate compliance with all environmental performance criteria.IntroductionCost-effective management of multiple tailings management areas distributed throughout a 35 km watershed requires the application of leading-edge environmental technologies. Long-term monitoring, care and maintenance costs must first be minimized through the application of decommissioning technologies that inhibit acid generation and minimize the release of contaminants from the sites. On-going operating costs must then be controlled through the application of environmental management strategies that optimize the allocation of resources while ensuring compliance with regulatory and Company environmental requirements.Using sites in the Serpent River Watershed as an example, this paper demonstrates the effectiveness of water covers as a decommissioning strategy to inhibit acid generation. In addition, the Telemetered Environmental Operating Control System and Regional Environmental Information Management System are reviewed as examples of the application of environmental technologies to the management of environmental programs."

ABSTRACT: Application of teleoperated and automated (or “autonomous”) mobile equipment in under-ground metal mines represents a promising avenue for overcoming some of the challenges facing the industry. This paper addresses the overall effectiveness of autonomous loading and haulage equipment compared with conventional human-operated machines. Factors affecting availability, utilization, and production rate are explored, and an emphasis is placed on some problems and risks not present in conventional human-operated systems, as well as on the character and criticality of autonomous equipment. The need for a more in-depth analysis of factors affecting overall autonomous equipment effectiveness is stressed; these factors should be taken into consideration at the stage of feasibility studies. The paper concludes with recommendations and directions for future research.

For hundreds of years the standard vertical mine shaft was rectangular shaped and timber lined. There are many advantages to rectangular shafts but as mines became deeper the circular shaft became more popular. The chief advantages of circular, concrete lined shafts are their ability to resist lateral pressure and they offer less resistance to ventilation air. A number of elliptical shafts have been sunk in an attempt to realize the advantages of both the rectangular and the circular shaft. A concrete lined elliptical shaft provides better space utilization than a circular shaft, would allow for shaft sinking with two double drum hoists, as well as concurrent level development. The design also makes one sided stations possible and provides for a simple headframe design.

Suncor Energy currently mines approximately nine hundred thousand tonnes of ore and waste per day at its open pit operations in the Athabasca Oilsands near Fort McMurray, Alberta. Modeling these deposits for planning purposes is particularly challenging given the characteristics associated with the deposit - stratigraphic deposition coupled with gradational grade distribution. The identification of ore and waste is a combination of bitumen cutoff grade, minimum mining thickness and separable waste thickness subject to criteria established by provincial regulatory agencies. Suncor along with Mincom Inc. have collaborated on this project to derive a methodology, automated by computer software, to streamline the ore and waste identification process. This paper explains the methodology and programs created to identify ore and waste in use at Suncor Energy and how this identification is used to categorize reserves and to generate mine design surfaces.

This survey continues the long tradition of providing a snapshot of operating data from industrial electrorefineries. It is a supplement to previous surveys that were performed in 1987, 1991, 1995, 1999, 2001, 2003, 2007, 2010, 2013 and 2016. Analyses of current data and historical trends are presented. Examples of innovations to reduce costs, improve productivity, and improve quality are provided. In general, refineries continue to increase productivity while treating anodes with more impurities. INTRODUCTION This manuscript analyzes global survey data provided by operating copper electrorefineries. This paper continues a series of surveys of copper refining tankhouses that started in 1987 (Schloen, 1987, 1991; Schloen & Davemport, 1995; Davenport et al., 1999; Robinson et al., 2003; Moats et al., 2007, 2013, 2016). In this installment, data collected from 2015 and 2018 will be presented and analyzed. The 2015 survey data were presented at Copper 2016 in Kobe, Japan. This survey will continue the analysis of previous data to illustrate long term trends in copper electrorefining, which were originally presented at the Davenport Symposium in October, 2014 (Moats, Robinson, & Wang, 2014). Refineries who supplied surveys are listed in Table 1. Cathode production data from 2015 and 2017/18 (from surveys presented in 2016 and 2019) are provided to indicate which plants provided surveys and when. This manuscript presents operating data for ~6.5 million tonnes of copper production, which represents 30–35% of the world’s copper electrorefining production. Shovel bucket blast fragmentation analysis is an alternate way to assess blast performance and its effects on downstream mining processes. A camera is installed on the boom of cable shovels, and the stick of hydraulic shovels. Images are captured automatically as the shovel digs, and are processed to acquire rock size information. The automatic data acquisition makes this method safe to use with minimal manual labour. It also allows for a large set of sample data to be captured from both the surface and the interior of a bench face. The system has been deployed in several mines to provide an objective assessment of blasting performance. Images are captured from their cable or hydraulic shovels. The images are grouped into sets based on the shovel location and time to match the fragmentation to specific blasts. Blast fragmentation reports are created for each blast after reviewing the results. Measuring blast fragmentation from the shovel bucket proves to be an effective alternative for blast performance assessment with unique advantages. The blast fragmentation information has been valuable to the mines, and the mines have begun adopting it into their operations.

A large magnesite-talc body is locared in Delora Township, 11 km sourh-southeasr of Timmins, Onrario. The deposit occurs in part of an Archean greensrone belt dominated by volcanic and sedimenrary rocks and large bodies of ultramafic intrusions. The magnesite-talc zane is abour 1800 m long, has a maximum width of 300 m and has been drilled ro 120 m below surface. Chemical analyses of rhe main carbonate zane average 20 ro 28% soluble MgO (magnesia), 5 ro 6% rota/ iron oxide and less rhan 0.1 % CaO (lime). Mineralogically, the zane consists of approximately 54% magnesite, 28% rate, /5% quartz and 3% hematire. Perrographic srudies suggest that rhe various assemblages of magnesite, rate, quartz and serpentine were derived from a parenr serpenrinire (after dunire). An early carbonitization stage, which produced a high-magnesite, low-talc assemblage, preceded a farer decarbonitizarion stage, which formed rhe main magnesite-talc assemblage. Despite a favourably low calcium oxide content of rhe magnesite-talc rock, considerable iron in the magnesire /at rice has limited the quality of the beneficiared product: rhe besr flotation concentrate to dare yields 92 to 94% dead-burned MgO.
