Molybdenite depression by shear degraded polyacrylamide solutions has been investigated. Aqueous solutions of polyacrylamide-type flocculants were subjected to shear degradation under a range of high-speed stirring conditions. Settling tests, carried out with quartz slurries and sheared polyacrylamides, showed reduced flocculant performance with increased degradation. As the sedimentation rate is strongly dependent on the polymer's molecular weight, these results fit well with the shear degradation theory, which predicts the production of shorter chain segments due to breakage of the polymer macromolecules. Microflotation tests on natural molybdenite showed that the depressing ability of a commercial polyacrylamide flocculant remained unaltered after shear degradation, even when the flocculating ability was entirely lost. Practical implications of shear degradation on molybdenite flotation are discussed.

"The mechanism of leaching of semiconducting minerals such as PbS, ZnS, UO2, etc., has been the subject of intensive speculation by hydrometallurgy researchers in the early 1950s who assumed the formation of intermediate surface complexes that could be neither separated nor identified by physicochemical techniques. The electrochemical theory of leaching introduced in the late 1960s resolved this problem by comparing the leaching process to a corrosion phenomenon similar to the corrosion of metals. Few years later, experimental evidence showed that anodic and cathodic zones are formed on the dissolving mineral although no electric current is imposed on the mineral during dissolution. A discussion of these findings is outlined.INTRODUCTIONIn the early 1950s researchers realized that kinetic studies for leaching ores are as important as thermodynamic calculations. It was also during this period that the concept of species adsorption on mineral surfaces has dominated the interpretation of the mechanisms of most reactions. This may have been due to the fact that many researchers of this period came from the mineral dressing sector and were influenced by flotation theories. However, when the knowledge of lattice defects and the semiconductivity of minerals became known and their importance in extractive metallurgy was realized, there was a need to explain the leaching reactions in light of these modern theories (Habashi, 1969, 1970). Semiconducting minerals of importance in metallurgy are two categories: the sulfides such as those of copper, lead, zinc, and the oxides such as those of uranium."

Whole-rock and muscovite potassium-argon dates from selected low-grade metamorphic rocks of Precambrian age in the Canadian Rocky Mountains near Jasper, Alberta, were obtained to ascertain the age of the source terrain and the age of the metamorphism. Ten argillites gave whole-rock dates ranging from 270 to 485 million years, dates which are apparently inter-mediate between the age of the source material and that of the metamorphism. "Up-dating" increases with the degree of orientation of muscovite in the cleavage plane, and with the ratio of the muscovite in the cleavage plane to that in the plane of the bedding. Detrital muscovite from four arenaceous rocks gave dates ranging from 1,050 to 1,780 million years. "Updating" increases with decreasing grain size, so that, within the range investigated, the cube of the median diameter (¢) of the muscovite is apparently proportional to the radiometric date.

The paper is a historical cross-section through a 28-year period of operation of the direct-to-blister Flash Smelting Furnace in the KGHM Glogów Copper Plant. It presents the origin of the furnace as well as the path of numerous changes and modifications both in technology and process introduced in the furnace in response to the production and cost-reduction challenges. The authors provide justification of the statement that continuous improvement of the "Polish" Flash Smelting Furnace has ranked it among the most modem smelting units in the world.

"The influence of lead ions on zinc electrowinning process was investigated by means of electrochemical noise measurements (ENMs) and cyclic voltammetry in conjunction with scanning electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction. All electrochemical experiments were performed in sulphuric acid electrolyte containing different lead ion concentrations as impurity. Lead was added in six trace levels between 0.05–0.8 mg/L in the bath. The lead content of the zinc deposits was dependent on the introduced lead concentrations. The overpotential associated with zinc electrodeposition shifted to higher values with the increase of lead concentration in the solution. An appropriate correlation was found between the different concentrations of lead in the electrolyte and the morphology of zinc deposit by ENM. The results showed that the increase of lead ion concentrations is generally accompanied with the decrease of skew and increase of kurtosis values that could be related to the morphology of zinc deposit. Effectively, the morphology changes from well-defined hexagonal platelets to large hexagonal, layered platelets and finally to non-symmetric refined crystalline structure, respectively.INTRODUCTION In commercial zinc electrowinning, zinc oxide is leached from the roasted calcine with an aqueous acid sulfate electrolyte. Then the zinc-rich solution is purified and transferred into an electrolytic cell. During electrolysis, zinc is deposited on aluminum cathode where lead-silver or pure lead is served as anode. Electrodeposition of zinc could be influenced by several parameters such as bath acidity, temperature, current density, the nature and concentration of impurities as well as additives in electrolyte. "The Mineral possibilities of the Chibougamau area were first recognized by Richardson in 1870 and Low in 1885, both of the Geological Survey of Canada. The first record of interest by the Quebec Bureau of Mines is in 1904, when J. Obalski reported on the discovery of copper and asbestos by Peter McKenzie in the previous year. Reports of 1906 and 1907 covered the McKenzie Gold Mine find and other deposits. In 1908 Prof. Dulieux described the quartz vein on Merrill Island and the mineralized zone on the near-by mainland. In 1910 the Chibougamau Railway Commission, though commenting favourably on the possibilities of the area, concluded that a railway was not then warranted.In spite of this, prospecting in the district continued. The main Campbell Chibougamau deposit, the Blake showing on Merrill Island in Dore Lake, was found in 1920, and other discoveries were made soon after. Between 1927 the work of Mawdsley, Retty, and Norman tor the Geological Survey and the Quebec Bureau of Mines stimulated further interest. In 1934 Consolidated Chibougamau Goldfields Ltd., a subsidiary of Consolidated Mining and Smelting Co. of Canada Ltd., acquired the Merrill Island and Cedar Bay holdings of Chibougamau Prospectors Ltd. They embarked on an aggressive campaign, directed essentially at the gold quartz veins at Cedar Bay. Exploration there included a 522-foot shaft, 4,732 feet of drifts and crosscuts, and about 34,000 feet of surface and underground diamond drilling. Thirteen holes were also drilled on the replacement sulphide lens at Merrill Island. Operations were suspended in 1936, as the occurrence was too low grade for development at the existing metal prices and under difficult operating conditions.The completion of the Quebec Bureau of Mines highway from St. Felicien to Chibougamau in 1950 was followed by a project of detailed geological mapping by the Bureau. It also encouraged Campbell Chibou-gamau Mines to acquire the assets of Consolidated Chibougamau Gold-fields and commence a program of surface exploration. Between August 1950 and April 1951, 41,183 feet of diamond drilling was done on the Cedar Bay and Merrill Island holdings. The Blake showing off the west shore of Merrill Island developed at depth into a major orebody. A lease was obtained on adjacent ground from Merrill Island Corporation, and underground work commenced in November 1951. Development at Merrill Island to June 1st, 1955, included a four-compartment shaft to 1,225 feet, with 8 levels at 150-foot intervals, 5,317 feet of raises, 16,709 feet of drifts and crosscuts, 52,514 feet of surface and 96,593 feet of underground diamond drilling."

Three-dimensional models are in increasing demand for design, maintenance, operations and construction project management. Point-clouds are the main output of automatic data collection using laser-scanners and photogrammetric technologies. Pipe-works may comprise 50% of the value of important construction projects such as industrial and research facilities. We have developed a practical and cost-effective approach, based on the Hough-transform and judicious use of domain constraints, to find, recognize and reconstruct/model 3D pipes within point-clouds fully automatically. The developed approach allows pipe growing within a 3D point-cloud. It samples the point-cloud to sequential orthogonal slices, detects pipe?s cross-sections within sampled slices and grows the pipe along the cross sections centerlines. It is validated using laser-scanner data from construction of the Engineering-VI building on the University of Waterloo (UW) campus. The system works on a typical laptop. Recognition and localization results are within a few millimeters. The presented approach opens the gate to broad applications of pipe-network modeling.

"Researchers at the Colorado School of Mines are designing and building a 1:40 scaled physical model of a fully operational longwall coal mine. The purpose of the model is to minimize the occurrence of methane explosion hazards by testing various ventilation strategies and determining optimal methane sensor placement throughout the longwall face. Fluid scaling factors were analyzed using Computational Fluid Dynamics software Ansys FLUENT™ at both full and 1/40th scales. Researchers were able to identify key scaling factors and subsequently developed suitable flow parameters that would maintain full scale accuracy of flow patterns in the 1/40th model. KEYWORDS Coal, Longwall, Methane, Explosion, Scale Model, Ventilation, Fluid Dynamics, Richardson, Gob, Porous INTRODUCTION Mine ventilation systems are a key component for ensuring a safe working environment by introducing fresh air from the surface and diluting explosive gases and hazardous contaminants. This holds true for longwall coal mines where the emission of flammable methane gas from the longwall face as well as the gob can create explosive mixtures of methane and air. Therefore, an effective ventilation strategy can help mitigate the potential for accidents within a mine. Developing an effective mine ventilation system (MVS) requires a detailed understanding of the physics of gas transport and how this relates to specific geometries and obstructions in the face. Researching this phenomenon requires the development of computational fluid dynamics models capable of simulating fluid flow and methane species transport that can be validated through physical experimentation. Unique site conditions determine ventilation layouts for every coal mine. Researchers have designed a 1/40th scaled physical model of a longwall coal face and adjacent gob that includes movable shield supports and a movable shearer with rotating cutter drums that can be adjusted to a variety of ventilation conditions. The proposed work will address the need for an improved Mine-wide Atmospheric Monitoring System (AMS), and provide the ability to link existing MVS models with AMS in real time. By accurately representing the coal face, the gob area and the mining equipment, gate roads and bleeder entries, the scaled model accurately represents all relevant structures, geometry, and dynamic conditions. A Plexiglas cover allows full optical access for sensor equipment as well as visual inspection of the fluid flow and species transport."

At present, most ore milling is done in tumbling mills, consisting of huge cylinders turning on their horizontal axis. This rotational motion causes the ore charge and the grinding balls to interact by impact, compression and abrasion, to reduce the size of the ore. This method is very inefficient since only around 12% of the energy supplied is used for actual grinding, the rest being used in moving the large mass of balls and ore within the mill. This work aimed at better understanding the milling process by evaluating the movement of the load through the Discrete Elements Method (DEM). First, the number of bodies (balls and ore) moving inside the mill is determined, to correlate to the potential impacts that constitute one of the milling mechanisms. Then, the number of high energy impacts is evaluated to correlate to the bodies in motion. At this stage, a differentiation between grinding media and the ore, as well as between the types of contact taking place in the mill, has to be made. This latter issue is of great relevance since from the five identified contact types (ball-ball, ball-liner, ore-ore, ball-ore and ore-liner) only the last three actually contribute to the milling process, the other two causing structural damage to the mill.

Material can be seen as the fuel needed to execute the project from inception to completion. Material installed provides good indicators of progress achieved onsite vis-a-vis project schedule performance. It correlates well with the role of the schedule performance index (SPI) of the earned value method (EVM). Material is recognized to have a significant impact on achieved progress for physical completion of project activities. This paper presents a study on the development of material status index (MSI) in support of the EVM. Unlike the SPI, the newly developed index account for the criticality of project activities. This is carried out considering the total float of each activity, percent float (i.e. the ratio of float to activity duration) and the total float of the path on which the activity is located. MSI, can independently and jointly with SPI provide root causes behind problems encountered during project execution. In turn MSI can reveal material related factors behind the performance detected by joint interpretation of the two indices. MSI serves to provide added value in alerting management to take corrective actions. While SPI and MSI may have different values, they can jointly augment and enrich the captured project status based on EVM. To demonstrate the capabilities of the developed MSI method, it is implemented on a case study. The case encompasses the construction schedule of a hydro power station constructed in northern Quebec. Different scenarios are adapted from the real case to demonstrate a set of practical aspects of the developed index. The results generated from the analysis of the case study illustrate the useful features of MSI beyond those of the traditional SPI on two fronts; causation and the considerations of criticalities of actives.

The initial rates of dissolution of pyrite, chalcosine, sphalerite and galena in acidic sulphate solutions under oxygen pressure were measured in the range of Poe = 0.2-1 MPa, 130-180 °C, [H2SO4]0 = 0.2-0.7 M, and in the presence of surface-active agents and agitation producing Re = 4-16 x 103. Reaction orders, activation energies, and values of reaction constants for these oxidation reactions were established. The reactions also were shown to be diffusion-controlled; and the rates demonstrate a linear dependence on the surface area of the sulphides. A surface reaction model, in which oxygen is transported through a solid layer of surface products, has been advanced. The initial stage of high-temperature interaction at pH <7 is suggested to involve a chemical activation of the sulphide surface and is described by the following general reaction: MenSm + H3O+ Men-1 Sm-1 (HS-)s + H2O The subsequent oxidation of surface complex HS- to S0 or SO2-4 occurs with the assistance of Fe(III), Cu(II) ions depending on temperature and the redox potential of the medium, which are defined by oxygen pressure and composition of the reaction mixture, especially concentrations of H2SO4 and metals with variable valence. General process kinetics are complicated due to the formation of by-products on the basis of Fe3+ Pb2+, Cup ions, which displace the kinetics into the diffusion region.

To date, improved thickening of clay mineral dispersions presents major technological and environmental challenge to mining and mineral processing industry worldwide. Flocculant-assisted dewatering processes currently employed during thickening are far from being efficient, requiring further development and process optimisation for dramatic improvement. In this paper, recent studies carried out to modify (i) pulp chemistry, (ii) flocculation performance and (iii) particle interactions to significantly improve the dewatering behaviour of flocculated, model and plant smectite and kaolinite clay dispersions are presented. It is shown that pulp pH-mediated hydrolyzable metal ion hydrolysis and specific adsorption in tandem with high molecular weight flocculant and shear may synergistically act to significantly enhance the dewaterability of both clay mineral pulps. Furthermore, polymeric flocculant structure type is demonstrated to show clear links with floc shear sensitivity, and hence, flocculation performance and pulp dewaterability. The implications and relevance of the findings plant clay mineral waste tailings thickening operations are drawn.

"The Moulton Hill deposit is in the Eastern Townships of Quebec, 3 miles northeast of Sherbrooke. It is complex, both structurally and mineralogically, consisting of a narrow, irregular, mineralized zone that has been traced for a length of 600 feet, and in places to a depth of 1,000 feet, containing copper, lead, and zinc sulphides with a low content of gold and silver. It lies in a series of highly schistose micaceous rocks, believed to be of Ordovician age, but the mineralization is probably post-Lower Devonian. New details of the structure of the ore have become available since it was first described (1) , and as these show some striking peculiarities a further discussion is here merited .As detailed elsewhere, the deposit was discovered in 1942 as a result of regional geological studies followed by the application of electrical geophysical methods.Actual production began in July, 1944, and ceased in June, 1945. The Mining Association of Canada launched the Towards Sustainable Mining initiative in 2004. TSM&apos;s goal is to improve the mining industry&apos;s performance by aligning its actions with the priorities and values of Canadians. The initiative currently includes performance indicators for four areas: tailings management, energy use and greenhouse gas management, external outreach and corporate crisis management planning. Over the past year, the association has been designing a performance assessment and verification system for these performance areas, as its members prepare to move external verification of their performance in 2007. The initiative and its evolution, as well as the challenges faced in developing a verification system applicable to an entire sector will be examined.

Gold losses must be controlled during extracting processes, especially during cyanidation. Otherwise recovery decreases and therefore the profitability of projects too. One of the phenomena that generate such losses is known as preg-robbing which occurs when some mineral constituent adsorbs aurocyanide complex from a cyanide solution. There are some laboratory methods to identify potential preg-robbing in gold ores, highlighting the PRP method, the BGMI test, and cyanidation tests by conventional agitation without activated carbon (BRP) and with activated carbon (CIL). For this study we performed an initial characterization of a sample from Antioquia - Colombia and then we carried out the methods described above in order to identify the presence of carbonaceous matter. We obtained a percentage of preg-robbing of 78.7% by applying the BGMI test; the preg-robbing potential by the PRP method was 97.9% with an extraction of 0.77% and an inferred recovery of 36.6% if preg-robbing did not occur. Finally we obtained under the BRT test a recovery of 0%, while for CIL test an extraction of 33.6% what confirmed the presence of preg-robbers agents in the gold ore. We conducted all tests in the Institute of Minerals - CIMEX at Universidad Nacional de Colombia - Medellin.

"The carbonatite massif of Sokli includes several low-grade Nb showings composed of ores and wastes as identified by routine analyses. More detailed lithologic proportions were determined in two orebodies in the Kaulusrova Nb-mineralized area by a careful geological study and by thorium radiation measurement on 10 cm-long drill core cuttings with a total length of 460 metres. The distribution of Nb in eight X-ray spectrometrically analyzed drill core sample intervals (totalling 35.8 m) was determined by analyzing the intervals semi-continuously by an X -MET analyzer. The geological studies suggest that Nb-mineralized bodies are feasible fo r the sorting of are and waste. This was confirmed by the semi-continuous determination of Nb on the X-MET analyzer.IntroductionThe Sokli carbonatite complex is located in eastern Finnish Lapland. The main ore of the carbonatite massif is a regolithic phosphorus ore in the weathered crust. Large-scale geophysical measurements and diamond drillings have also established several niobium showings within the magmatic carbonatites. Owing to the complicated geology of the massif, the niobium showings occur as irregular zones o r areas displaying complicated structure, texture, mineralogy and geochemistry (Vartiainen and Paarma , 1979; Vartiainen , 1980). The tonnages in areas such as this are large but the grades in-situ are low . The most intensely studied niobium showing is the Kaulusrova area.The exploitation of these showings depends on the feasibility of applying a sorting technique to upgrade the feed and to minimize the amount of material to be treated in the concentration plant. These possibilities o n the Kaulusrova area have been viewed by a detailed geological and X-MET an analyzing study."

The surficial Archæan rocks of the southern gold belt of western Quebec are constricted near Kewagama lake by granite masses to the north and south. This divides the belt into natural eastern and western parts. This paper deals with the eastern part, extending from Malanie to Haig township. In this section the Keewatin-Timiskaming rocks have a length of about 70 miles and end abruptly against garnetiferous gneisses of the Grenville terrain. In the western half of the section where exploration has been under way since the early twenties, there are sixteen mines that are or have been in operation, and eleven prospective mines. In the eastern half where exploration has been carried on since the early thirties, six prospective gold mines are under development, one· of which, Louvicourt Goldfields, is at the initial production stage. Of the sixteen properties in the western half that are operating or have operated, all, except the Golden Manitou, which is a base metal mine, and the old Green Stabell from which there was a small production of copper, produce gold. Of the eleven prospective mines in the western half nine have gold. New Bidlamaque has gold and copper and one, East Sullivan, has copper-zinc ore. Since production began in 1927 gold, silver, zinc, copper, and lead having a total value of about $10,000,000 have been produced from the mines of the eastern section of the southern gold belt of western Quebec.

Life span of aluminum smelting electrolysis cells can reach up to 3000 days. During this period, cathode blocks go under various physical and chemical changes that could result in an increase of electrical resistivity. The increase may be due to carbon migration from the cast iron to the steel bars, gap evolution between the cathode block and the cast iron, cathode cracking, etc. This paper focuses however only on the collector steel bar electrical resistivity evolution. To reveal the main phenomena responsible for the electrical resistivity increase, chemical analysis, metallographic and electrical resistivity tests were conducted on two steels bars picked from two Hall-Héroult cells after autopsies. Cathode voltage drop and temperature were measured using electrically insulated internal probes and thermocouples on 16 samples from each steel bar. Electrical resistivity can reach up to 1.21µO-m for a steel bar aged 2505 days compare to 0.142µO-m for steel AISI 1008 at room temperature.

Since the disappearance of Les Forges du Saint-Maurice at the end of the last century, many historians have taken an interest in the lengthy past of this enterprise. They considered the political, socio-economic, administrative and anecdotal aspects of the industry, but barely dealt with the elements of technology. The purpose of this article is to try to fill this gap (1). Les Forges du Saint-Maurice was an integrated industrial concern, specializing in the production of semi-finished wrought iron and finished cast iron that operated almost without interruption between 1734 and 1883. Les Forges first came into being in 1729, when Montreal merchant Franc;ois Poulin de Francheville submitted to the King of France a request for the right to exploit the bog iron ore deposits on his seigneury of Saint-Maurice. This request, agreed to in 1730, was one of a long series of attempts, previously unsuccessful, to establish a local iron industry in the colony. Several such proposals were held up by a lack of capital from promoters or a too rigid application of the mercantilist policy by the metropolis. In 1730, however, the French minister Maurepas favoured a more liberal policy which would encourage private enterprise. The benefits of an iron industry to the naval construction industry was a factor that caught the attention of administrators. The choice of the site for Les Forges was based on the following factors: - the abundance of surface deposits of bog iron ore in the Saint-Maurice region; - the presence of a vast supply of hardwood and conifers needed in large quantities by this industry; - the proximity of sandstone and limestone deposits, md1spensable materials for the construction and operation of the blast furnace; - the presence of a water stream, with sufficient flow to provide the hydraulic power needed for the operation of the machinery.

The effects of several fluxes on purification, microstructures and properties of A00 aluminium have been studied. The experimental results and analyses indicate that many cracks and large porosities exist in the surface film above the melt purified by C2Cl6 and that the film is floe and mostly composed of AhO3 and pure aluminum, which carries many carbon particles and AlCh not fully volatilized. And then over 50% of the all-melting residue is pure aluminum, which is one of the major reasons for high melting loss. Moreover, because of a mass of gas bubbles and a state of seethe, there exist many inclusions which size is under l0µm in the microstructure of A00 aluminum purified with C2Cl6 or fluxes containing C2Cl6- With this purifying method, the aluminum crystal grains are extended along the radius that was observed firstly and the average crystal size of A00 aluminum are about 100µm~150µm. In addition, small size inclusions have little affected on tensile strength and micro inclusions under l0µm have little affected on elongation.
