"The Nechalacho deposit, located in the Northwest Territories, Canada, is a heavy rare earth element (REE) deposit. The main REE-bearing minerals in the deposit are zircon, allanite, bastnäsite, synchysite, columbite (Fe) and fergusonite. Previous work investigated the use of gravity and magnetic separation in the processing of this ore and showed that coarse particles following grinding were enriched in zircon, suggesting the potential for selective comminution. The current work investigates the possibility to selectively comminute gangue minerals and concentrate REE-bearing zircon into coarser size fractions. The ore was ground wet in a laboratory rod mill for various lengths of time (0, 10, 20, 30, and 40 min). The resultant products were analyzed using ICP-MS, to determine the distribution of zirconium and REEs in the different size fractions produced after grinding, and QEMSCAN, to identify mineral phases, mineral liberation and the distribution of minerals. Optimum grind sizes for the upgrading of zircon due to selective comminution were then proposed, and dense medium separation was investigated as a means to further concentrate zircon.It is important to note that this process is not representative of the currently selected process design or recovery for the Nechalacho deposit. Any application of this process to this deposit would require optimization in order to ensure appropriate grade and recovery targets are met.INTRODUCTIONThe rare earth elements (REEs) are the fifteen elements in the lanthanide series of the Periodic Table, as well as yttrium (scandium is excluded in this work). Traditionally, REEs are categorized into two groups: the cerium sub-group of “light” rare earth elements (LREEs); and the yttrium sub-group of “heavy” rare earth elements (HREEs) (Golev et al., 2014). The LREEs comprise the first six lanthanides (lanthanum through samarium) and the HREEs comprise the remaining nine lanthanide elements (europium through lutetium) coupled with yttrium (Golev et al., 2014). HREEs are much less abundant in the earth’s crust and on average are more expensive than LREEs (Seredin, 2010). Of the fifteen REEs, the production of neodymium, europium, terbium, dysprosium and yttrium has been determined to be most critical due to their scarcity, high demand and criticality in many high-technology and clean energy applications, such as in illuminated screens for electronic devices and permanent magnets in wind turbines (Seredin, 2010; U.S. Department of Energy, 2011). This paper presents a dynamic simulator of the semi-autogenous grinding operation deduced from first principles (non-stationary population balances) coupled to a Model-Based Real-Time Optimization (MBRTO) system to study optimizing strategies for an industrial semi-autogenous mill using genetic algorithms. For the design of the MBRTO both a validated first-principle steady-state model adapted on-line and a dynamic model were used to study the transient effect. The objective function considered is to maximize the ore throughput or the fine-product rate by changing the power-draw. For these purposes, these two performance indexes were introduced as fitness functions in the genetic algorithms. The three decision variables used were the ore feed rate, the water feed rate and the mill rotating velocity. The optimization problem was solved using a classical genetic algorithm with constant population. Constraints in the power draw and the filling level were handled by assigning a penalty function to the fitness function. Simulation results using industrial data for a large 1800 t/h copper-ore mill show the effectiveness of the system in finding the optimum controller set-points as a function of the process-operating constraints; mainly maximum ore feed rate, power draw and filling level. Starting from non- optimum conditions, the optimizer is able to improve the global performance index by 50% relative to a base case.

"Although lead, zinc, copper, and iron sulphides have been known for many years in the Bathurst region, the existence of large massive deposits was not known until the discovery of the Brunswick orebody in 1952. This was followed by the discoveries of the Anacon orebody in 1953 and the American Metals orebodies in 1954. There is no question as to the great importance of these large massive sulphide deposits, and no doubt that other sulphide deposits are to be found. The problem, of course, is where and how to find them.The discovery of the Brunswick and Anacon orebodies is attributed to geophysical work. The original discovery of the American Metals deposit is generally attributed to a regional airborne electromagnetic survey.It is generally stated that the Bathurst area is a geophysical camp, and this is essentially true, but in this highly competitive search for orebodies it is obviously impossible for an individual company to cover the entire area by a comprehensive geophysical survey. Some means other than geophysics must be used to narrow the target. The quickest, cheapest, and simplest method is geological investigations.It has been stated that nothing can be accomplished by geology in the Bathurst region, since the camp is largely covered with overburden. This is true only insofar as detailed work on certain properties is concerned. It is not true of the larger regional picture. Outcrops are scarce, but angular float is abundant, and precedent shows that angular float has moved but a short distance from its source.GeologyAeromagnetic maps published by the Department of Mines and Technical Surveys are the best guides to the geology and structure of the area. These maps supply factual information concerning the underlying rocks. When coupled with field investigations, they are very useful in the interpretation of regional geology and the selection of favourable areas. The discussion of the geology is accordingly centred upon the aeromagnetic maps. Diagnosis of the surface chemical factors playing a part in flotation separation of a valuable sulfide phase requires measurement of the hydrophobic and hydrophilic species that are statistically different between the concentrate and tail streams. Time of flight secondary ion mass spectrometry (ToF-SIMS) can be used to identify sufficient particles of a specific mineral phase for reliable statistics determining a mean value for each species with 95% confidence intervals (1). Using the region of interest (ROI) facility in the Tof-SIMS software, a mass spectrum from each particle, at 1-2 monolayer sensitivity, is recorded and stored. This analysis is reported for a chalcopyrite / pyrite / sphalerite mineral mixture conditioned at pH 9 for 20 minutes in order to study transfer of copper from chalcopyrite via solution to the other two mineral surfaces since this mechanism can be responsible for their inadvertent flotation in copper recovery. Analysis from mineral selection based on specific ToF-SIMS signals (eg. Pb, Zn, Cu, Fe, Fe/Cu) indicated no statistical difference in the copper intensities on pyrite and sphalerite after this conditioning. Principal component analysis (PCA) of the ToF-SIMS imaging data identifies combinations of factors strongly correlated (positively or negatively) in images or spectra from mass spectra recorded at each of 256x256 pixels in a selected area of particles. PCA is a better method of selecting minerals due to multi-variable recognition. It has clearly separated a statistical difference in copper intensities between the sphalerite and pyrite phases. The method has been extended to samples from an operating plant again with excellent phase recognition and diagnostic surface chemistry.

Vale Canada?s Birchtree Mine, located in Thompson Manitoba, has been experiencing problems with hanging wall / footwall dilution, as well as sloughing off of adjacent stopes and temporary stope block backs. Birchtree Mine is interested in determining how time affects the stability of their open stope blocks. Many factors simultaneously influence open stope stability (rock mass quality, joint condition, stress condition). This makes it challenging to determine the influence of a single parameter such as exposure time or stand-up time. This study focuses on determining the effect of exposure time on open stope dilution and combines stress analysis and empirical based approaches.

This paper describes quality control methodologies for the production of semisolid A356 aluminum slugs with the SEED process. A methodology based on destructive tests carried out with an apparatus measuring the force to slice the slugs is presented. The force measurements were correlated with the solid phase morphologies of the slugs and were validated against a non destructive methodology that consisted in monitoring the temperature evolution of crucibles to produce the slugs and the drained metal. Results from the destructive and non destructive methodologies are compared and discussed.

"Abstract - Detrital minerals of upper mantle origin occur in Holocene conglomerates, pediments and antmounds, and in Oligocene conglomerates in the Green River Basin of southwestern Wyoming. The minerals are derived from disaggregated eclogite and peridotite, and are similar to minerals found in mantle- derived igneous rocks such as kimberlite and lamproite, the primary host rocks for diamond. The Green River Basin bisects the lamproite fields of the Leucite Hills (Wyoming) and Kamas (Utah) and overlies the Archean Wyoming craton, which makes the region favorable for diamond occurrence. Lamproite is the favored host for the indicator minerals because unusual high-Fe salitic diopside macrocrysts from the antmounds and from the ~1 Ma old Leucite Hills lamproites to the northeast are compositionally identical. The salitic diopside is uncommon in other igneous rocks and could be a new indicator mineral for use in lamproite exploration. The Green River Basin indicator minerals are eroded from the ~29 Ma old Bishop Conglomerate, whose source area is the Uinta Mountains to the south. No continuous mineral train exists between the Uinta occurrences and those in the Green River Basin. Assessment of the minerals using established and new geochemical criteria indicate that they formed in an oxidizing upper mantle and were transported to the surface by either kimberlite or lamproite. The existence of cogenetic diamond is unlikely based on the mineral chemistry, but selective removal of diamond indicator minerals through weathering and fluvial transport cannot be excluded. Diamonds and mantle garnets are present in the northeastern Uinta Mountains, but they originated as part of the Diamond Hoax of 1872. A representative mineral assemblage from the true igneous host of the indicator minerals is required to fully establish their economic potential. Post-Oligocene erosion and Pleistocene glaciation have hindered efforts to locate a bona fide igneous source for the indicator minerals. Résumé - Des minéraux détritiques provenant du manteau supérieur ont été trouvés dans des conglomérats, des pédiments et des monticules de fourmis de l’Holocéne, et dans des conglomérats de l’Oligocène du Green River Basin, au sud-ouest du Wyoming. Ces minéraux sont issus du démantellement d’éclogites et de péridotites, et sont semblables aux minéraux trouvés dans des roches ignées provenant du manteau, comme les kimberlites et les lamproïtes. "In conjunction with Banick Mercur , Wright Engineers Limited designed the first multi-stage aqueous pressure oxidation system in an alkaline environment in North America. A three-stage slurry heating and slurry pressure let-down with heat recovery was an innovative approach to the problem of high energy cost with the low sulphur content of the ore. The design of this system required solving a number of problems associated with heating and pumping of slurries at pressures up to 3230 kPa and temperatures in excess of 220°C. Wright received an Award of Merit in October 1989, from the Canadian Consulting Engineering Awards Committee in the Process Category for its design of the Mercur pressure oxidation system.The Mercur Mine is located at the south end of the Oquirrh Mountains in Tooele County about 65 miles by road from Salt Lake City, Utah, U.S.A. The original mill was designed to process 5000 tpd of oxidized gold ore in a carbon-in-leach (CIL) circuit. A new ore treatment system was required to treat the substantial quantities of refractory ore reserves which could not be treated economically in the existing mill. The new pressure oxidation circuit makes the refractory ore amenable to gold recovery by oxidation of the sulphides contained in the ore .Wright Engineers Limited was commissioned by Barrick Mercur Gold Mine Ltd ., a wholly-owned subsidiary of American Barrick Resources, to design the pressure oxidation facility. This followed completion of a feasibility study by Wright which showed that the project was technically and economically viable.Work on the feasibility study began in 1986, detail design commenced in February 1987, and was completed in December 1987. Mechanical installation was completed in January 1988, and slurry feed began in February 1988. The plant has operated since June 1988 without major interruption . Wright was responsible for engineering, procurement and construction management for the addition of the 750 tpd pressure oxidation circuit to the existing mill and also had commissioning responsibility.Major unit processes involved in the pressure oxidation facility are ore thickening, three-stage slurry preheating, pressure oxidation and three-stage slurry cooling with heat recovery, stearn generation, propane and oxygen storage and a video graphic display process control system were included in the scope as process anciliaries.The pressure oxidation increases gold recovery from the refractory ore by conventional CIL from as low as 35% to more than 86070. A patent has been granted for the process."

Effective flocculation and dewatering of slurry streams containing clays (particularly kaolin and smectites which are often <200nm in lateral dimension) is becoming increasingly urgent. Release of water (often >75 wt%), for recycle and reduced make-up water consumption, from slurries in tailings streams and dam beds is usually slow and incomplete. Changes in settling rates and solids density of tailings containing clays can be achieved in practice by changes in pH, dissolved cations and flocculant additions. To achieve fast separation of clays from water and minimization of retained water, individual particles need to be bound in the initial stages of thickening into large, high-density aggregates, which may sediment more rapidly with lower intra-aggregate water content. Quantitative STIMAN (STructural IMage ANalysis) cryo-SEM imaging, shows that the structure of aggregates formed before flocculant addition has a determinative effect on these outcomes. Without flocculant addition, 4 stages occur in the mechanism of primary dewatering of kaolinite: initially separate particles and aggregates are dispersed (<0.3GP, where GP is the gel point); a partially-gelled chain network then forms linking particles edge-edge (EE) still well below the OP but remains largely suspended; after an induction time, this network structure rearranges from EE to face-face (FF) contacts densifying, compacting and dewatering the aggregates with settling rates well above Stoke&apos;s Law estimates for >20µm particles or aggregates; the GP is rapidly reached during settling producing a network spanning the vessel with compressive strength. This sponge-like structure with EE oriented particles limits slurry dewatering because the steric effect in the resulting partially-gelled structure is much more dominant than the electrostatic effects predicted by DLVO theory. Van der Waal&apos;s forces at very close distances, as particles slide across each other, may be responsible for the EE to FF change in structure. In this way, the previously extended network contracts, and when the solid volume fraction is low, the continuous network breaks apart forming aggregates and aggregate associations as flocs which arc able to freely settle. These densified aggregates settle at increased rate, give lower bed density and retain less water after drainage. With flocculant addition, the internal structure and networking of the pre-aggregates is largely preserved but they are rapidly and effectively bound together by the bridging action of the flocculant(s). The STIMAN analysis shows that there is a inverse correlation of intra-aggregate porosity (and void permeability) with Darcian permeability (and extent of dewatering) whereas there is a strong positive correlation of Darcian inter-aggregate permeability with settling and primary dewatering rate.

"Electric vehicles are an alternative to the existing combustion engine driven cars. According to the EU Battery Directive a substantial recycling rate of at least 50 wt.-% has to be met for aged batteries since 2006. Existing recycling techniques are based on energy intensive pyro- and hydrometallurgical process, which are not able to recover all components. Aluminum and lithium for instance are slagged. The EU-Project “ABattReLife” investigated possibilities for a mechanical processing in order to create a sustainable process and a closed material loop from grave to cradle. After a sufficient liberation of the Li-ion batteries, components like the doped carbon black fraction (mainly lamination of electrode foils), the separator foil and the housing material can comparatively easily be separated from the other components by screening and air sifting. The remaining mixture consists of anode and cathode foils which have a similar free-settling ratio and are more difficult to separate from each other. A second comminution and compaction step modifies the particle size and shape as well as the degree of delamination. These changes influence the density of the electrode foils in order to improve the separation efficiency. Yield and purity of the generated metal concentrates were parameters to show if the separation was successful. The specific energy consumption for the different methods of processing was estimated in order to benchmark the cost-benefit ratio for each one.The studies have been accomplished with a zig zag sifter (model TUBAF), a hammer mill (model HM 340 Jehmlich) and with a Petkus-Sifter. Finally a process flow sheet was developed for a Li-ion battery recycling plant in pilot scale."

Study of a company&apos;s balance sheet may tell a lot about the cost of this company&apos;s assets, but very little about their value. Then again, it is sometimes argued that a business should be bought because this will result in assets being acquired for less than their replacement cost. Introduction Classified equipment originally installed in 1923 in the Britannia mill consisted of eighteen Model C Dorr Simplex classifiers, each in closed circuit with a pebble-mill. These machines were only three feet wide and of light construction, so that their raking capacities were necessarily limited, the maximum being about 20 tons per hour for each classifier. On conversion from pebble-mills to ball-mills, in 1924, attempts to increase circulating loads with higher rake speeds resulted only in overflowing a coarser product to the flotation cells. The elevator type of classifier was developed locally in 1935 and during that year two units, each having a sand carrying capacity of from 30 to 40 tons per hour, were installed. With such loads, a material increase in the grinding capacities of the ball-mills was noticed, and, after further development work on the elevator classifier, fifteen of the small Dorr classifiers were replaced by units of this type, capable of handling approximately 75 tons of sand per hour, with later alterations increasing this capacity to well over 100 tons per hour. In the meantime, the three remaining ball-mills had been placed in circuit with Dorr FX classifiers, one of which was six feet wide and the others five feet wide. Impartial and exhaustive tests conducted on the Dorr FX versus the elevator classifier showed the average results on these machines at Britannia to be substantially the same. A large amount of testing was carried on to determine the effect of circulating load on the output of the grinding units. This work indicated a rapid increase in the grinding rate as the ball-mill feed increased up to about 60 tons per hour, after which a relatively slow increase took place up to 100 tons per hour. No benefits were derived from higher circulating loads. A 300 to 500 per cent circulating load, depending on the nature of the ore treated, is considered to be within the economical range for the grinding of Britannia ores.

Crushing ore prior to heap leaching enhances mineral liberation and creates fine particles that may require agglomeration to avoid permeability problems during leaching. Conventional modeling is relatively successful in describing general fluid flow and extraction in heaps. However, most models do not adequately account for the effects of mineral liberation and exposure or the effects of agglomeration, curing, and loading on heap leach performance. This paper will discuss methods to account for mineral liberation and exposure as a function of comminution. It will also discuss methods for incorporating liberation, exposure, and mineral locking as well as curing and fluid flow in heap leach modeling. It will also provide information regarding agglomeration and the effect of loading in heap leach modeling.

Knowledge of the state of stress in the Earth?s crust is very important to the safe and efficient development of underground excavations in mining and civil engineering projects. A number of methods have been developed over the past 40 years to assess the stress field in the rock mass. These range from local estimates derived from compilation of regional stress databases to back-analysis of field observations to dedicated in situ measurements. The Geomechanics Research Centre (GRC) at MIRARCO has a long history of undertaking in situ stress characterization and measurement. In this paper, the stress measurement techniques used by the GRC, including overcoring and undercoring in addition to borehole breakout back-analysis, are briefly reviewed. The limitations and application of each technique for different ground conditions and the challenges involved during the field work and in interpretation of the results are discussed. A successful stress measurement campaign is not limited to acquiring valid local measurement, but must include a careful interpretation and integration of the measurement with other geological and geotechnical context information. Based on our experience, it is suggested that all available stress indicators and data are combined and integrated with the local geological and geomechanical conditions to derive a consistent stress characterization for a given site.

The Diavik Diamond Mine is located in one of the most remote and forbidding places in the world, 220 kilometres south of the Arctic Circle and on the bed of a vast northern lake, Lac de Gras. A single road, built out of ice and crossing frozen lakes, connects the mine with other operations and Yellowknife, the capital of the Canada&apos;s Northwest Territories. Diamonds were first discovered in the Lac de Gras region in the early 1990s, and construction of the Diavik Diamond Mine was completed in 2003. Diavik currently mines three kimberlite pipes. Open pit mining has now concluded and all three pipes are mined using underground mining methods. In early 2010, Diavik began mining and processing initial ore from its new underground mine; underground mining operations are expected to continue beyond 2020. The initial mine ventilation system was an exhausting (pull) system with fresh air supplied by a fresh air raise and a main ramp. Return air was exhausted via two raises and a secondary ramp. The system had a total flow capacity approximating 401-411 m3/s. With planned increased production and with changes in mining method, it has been proposed to change the mine ventilation system to a positive (forcing) ventilation system in order to meet projected increases in flow requirements of 566-708 m3/s. Extensive engineering work was developed in order to successfully achieve the changes in system configuration. In the proposed configuration, the main ramp is in an exhaust configuration and exhaust raises are converted to fresh air raise. A number of system implementation options were investigated and phased plans for system execution have been developed. The proposed changes to the ventilation system are substantial and involve extensive construction work. Work was commenced in 2011, each planned phase has been successfully completed to date, and system changes continue today in order to achieve complete system flow reversal and increased flow distribution. This paper details the design of the modified ventilation system and commissioning work which will allow the mine to meet its future production targets.

"An image analysis method based on chord length distributions is applied to the batch settling of polyacrylamide flocculated kaolin suspensions. Two features of the interaggregate void space, the void chord length distribution mean and the white-to-black distribution ratio are extracted from an image series obtained over the two hour settling experiments. This approach produces three signal values, from two different probability distributions that can be measured as an indication of underlying sediment bed density and aggregation state. Further work is required on the physical interpretation of the signal, the image acquisition conditions, and the parameter selection methods. It is suggested that this chord length based feature extraction technique may be a useful signal to monitor during batch settling or thickening.INTRODUCTIONFew in situ techniques are available that can be used to directly measure aggregate properties within sediment beds in thickeners or secondary settlers. Typical process variables monitored include rake torque and height, bed level and pressure, feed rate and density, underflow rate and density, settling rate, and overflow turbidity; yet these process variables are only weakly related to process dynamics (Concha et al. 2014). Additional process monitoring signals, based on the direct measurement of aggregate properties could improve solid-liquid separation control and allow the extraction of more detailed information from batch settling experiments.Several optical methods exist for measurement of moving suspensions of aggregated solids in the dilute concentration regime, such as focused beam reflectance measurement (Peng and Williams 1994), and the turbidity fluctuation method (Gregory 1985). In the more concentrated region of a thickener, acoustic backscatter penetration and attenuation measured with an acoustic probe and changes in the underlying solid concentration in the highly concentrated, near-bed region of a thickener as a function of height and time (Hunter et al. 2012). While machine vision for froth monitoring has been thoroughly studied with at least five commercialized technologies (Aldrich et al. 2010), its’ application to the study of thickening has been limited."

The uranium hexafluoride (UF6) production facility now under construction at Eldorado, Port Hope, is discussed. Technological improvements in uranium refining are considered.

The impact of stockpile oxidation on chalcopyrite was studied through collectorless and collector-induced flotation conditions. In both cases, the Cu grade-recovery performance of stockpiled ore showed relatively poor concentrate grades with respect to that of a fresh sample. However, the oxidation had a minor effect on chalcopyrite recovery itself. The poor concentrate grades resulted from dilution effect primarily by excessive flotation of pyrrhotite. Size-by-size analyses indicated that for the collectorless flotation, the recoveries in the coarse and fine particle-size regions, were higher for fresh ore than for stockpile sample. A greater impact was seen in the coarse size regions for both types of sample, compared to the collector-induced case. The Cu recoveries showed a remarkable increase in the coarse size range for both samples when a collector was used. However, the case for stockpile sample was a marginally higher compared to the fresh sample. This difference has been offset by an opposite trend that was observed between these two samples in the fine size region. It is concluded that in contrast to the case with nickel-bearing sulphides, stockpiling conditions do not show a significant adverse effect on behaviour of chalcopyrite due to its strong floatability, regardless of oxidation.
