Introduction The property of the Britannia Mining and Smelting Company, Limited, is situated on the east side of Howe sound, about six miles from its head. It is roughly thirty miles by water from Vancouver, one of the important ports of the Pacific and the industrial and financial centre of British Columbia. Howe sound is navigable for ocean-going vessels and Britannia Beach is a daily port of call for the commodious boats of the Union Steam-ship Company, sailing from Vancouver. Few mines are so ideally situated or have so many or varied natural advantages. Copper was first found on Britannia mountain in 1888, by Forbes, but it was not until 1898 that five claims were staked here by Oliver Furry, a trapper. It is from these claims that the major production during the past thirty years has come. In 1900 the Britannia Copper Syndicate was formed and development of the property was commenced. In 1903 the late Grant B. Schley obtained control, and through his efforts the Britannia Mining and Smelting Company was organized in 1908 as a subsidiary of the Howe Sound Company. Since that time, a persistent and progressive policy has been followed, which has resulted in a prolonged and profitable operation. The country in the immediate vicinity of the mine is marked by strong relief, with mountains rising abruptly from tide-water to elevations of 5,000 feet and more. Two broad transverse valleys deeply dissect the area. These are the valleys of Britannia creek and Furry creek. The region has under-gone prolonged and relatively recent glaciation. Over much of the surface there is deep overburden and dense vegetation. The geology of the mine and vicinity has been described in reports by S. J. Schofield (1), H. T. James (2), J. G. Barry, and others (3). The present writer is in accord with much of this literature on Britannia, but during recent years, extended observations made underground have shown that the 'quartz porphyry', or 'mine porphyry', of several of the earlier writers is not the host rock to the commercial mineralization; and he contends that the mineralization occurs in highly altered phases of a complex series of ruffs, flows, and pyroclastics and their autoclastic metamorphosed products.

The bioleaching of fine low grade copper sulfide ore is described. A sample of ground (> 1 mm) copper ore from Sarcheshmeh, Iran, was subjected to a series of agglomeration procedures and subsequently leached. The best agglomerate was obtained by using lime and sulfuric acid as binders. A column bioleaching test of agglomerated ore was then run for 105 days along with a non-inoculated control column having thymol as bactericide. The results show that about 77.5% of copper was extracted in the bioleaching, whereas the control column achieved only 57% copper leaching.

The gas diffusion layer (GDL) is one of the most critical components of the proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) in achieving good performance. The GDL serves as a current collector, transport media for fuel and oxidant to the catalyst layers, a support for the catalyst layer and a medium for water management. In this paper, we will discuss the modeling and experimental measurement of the reactant distribution in the GDL and to the catalyst layer. This will be done for some new and advanced engineered GDLs. Novel optical technique which correlates measured data with reactant distribution are used. This technique combined with modeling allows optimal design of engineered GDLs.

"The Stump Lake mining camp is in Nicola mining division of southern British Columbia. It lies about halfway between the cities of Kamloops and Merritt.The deposits at Stump Lake are among the earliest lode discoveries of British Columbia, many of the claims having been staked between 1882 and 1885. A considerable amount of work was done prior to 189Cl, after which very little was done until 1916. Since that time mining has been carried on at intervals, much of it on the same deposits, by a number of companies, including the Donahue Mines Corporation, the Planet Mines and Reduction Company, the Nicola Mines and Metals Company, the Consolidated Nicola Goldfields, Limited, and others. According to the British Columbia Department of Mines, total production from the area has been: gold, 8,520 oz.; silver, 259,413 oz.; copper, 40,822 lb.; lead, 2,208,859 lb.; and zinc, 367,869 lb. Most of the production has come from the Enterprise vein and a branch of the Enterprrsethe King William vein."

A clarification technology used by municipalities to produce high-quality drinking water, polish sewage treatment plant effluent and handle combined sewer overflows has recently found new applications in the mines and iron and steel industry. This patented process, known as ACTIFLO®, utilizes microsand in a ballasted flocculation process to enhance the settling characteristics of suspended solids, increasing the efficiency sufficiently to achieve a clarifier footprint that is smaller than the one of a conventional clarifier. ACTIFLO® rise rates vary from 40 to 170 m/h with a total system hydraulic retention time of about 10 minutes. The result is a clarification system so compact that a full-scale system can operate as a trailer-mounted unit for temporary applications or as a permanent installation in facilities with space limitations. This paper explains the process and presents case studies in which this innovative technology was used at mines and steelmaking facilities to meet compliance requirements.

The option to leach iron from low grade copper concentrates could reduce transport costs and significantly improve the saleability of the concentrate. In addition, it reduces smelting costs and can remove undesirable impurities. The trend to produce cleaner and higher grade copper concentrates is very appealing to the smelters. A recent copper project came on line and there were three serious deficiencies which were not identified in the feasibility study. This came as a surprise and resulted in a number of projects to investigate ways of rectifying the problems in the shortest timeframe possible and using minimal new capital. The first serious issued not identified when commissioning was the lower than expected copper recovery, which was 70% compared to a predicted recovery of 80% to 87% in the feasibility study. This required investigating new flotation reagents and incorporating controlled potential sulphidisation. The second serious issue overlooked is the presence of significant amounts of talc minerals (insol) in the ore which are naturally floatable. This leads to lower concentrate grade and attempts to remove the talc resulted in lower copper recovery. Smelters have limits on the amount of talc in concentrate because it produces viscous slags and difficulties for the smelter. It also incurs higher transport costs. The third serious issue not identified in the feasibility study was the high arsenic reporting to the concentrate. Arsenic is a penalty element for smelters and at levels exceeding 0.3% the smelters may reject the concentrate. Arsenic is a problem environmentally for copper smelters and penalties apply when it is high. This paper describes the options for penalty element removal and suitability to incorporate into the modified flowsheet. It also highlights where the geometallurgy was not properly addressed and how these surprises could have been avoided. INTRODUCTION From 1970 to 1985, a copper company undertook metallurgical testwork on the Peruvian project copper ore. The ores were mined underground and treated over many years previously. Various other groups undertook studies and work until Aker Kvaerner undertook a feasibility study in 2006. Three ore composites were tested and grind-recovery relationships were developed. The feasibility study testwork identified that talc was a possible concern and will have an impact on copper concentrate grade. This was to be managed by blending. The current operating reality is that there is so much talc in the ore body it is not possible to blend it out. There was far more emphasis on molybdenum recovery. No mention was made of arsenic issues other than blending. There was a Concentrate Leach Study and a Molybdenum Hydrometallurgical Plant Study but these options did not proceed to a final flowsheet. A Scoping Study in 2006 looked at a Heap Leach project. The heap leaching gave very poor copper recovery on the sulphide ore. Heap Leaching was evaluated and tested for the high talc and high arsenic ore but recoveries were poor. The Aker Kvaerner feasibility study opted for a simple primary crush SAG/ball grind followed by flotation and sale of a concentrate. This is the current flowsheet utilised and the scale of the project is very large based on processing 117,200 tonnes of ore per day. A feasibility study does not guarantee success and the deviations from the feasibility study suggest there is a lot of technical work required to improve the current metallurgical performance.

"The mines in the Bancroft area of southeastern Ontario, a few kilometres west of the town of Bancroft, are in Faraday and Cardiff Townships. Three companies, known as Canadian Dyno Mines Limited, Macassa Gold Mines Limited (Bicroft Division) and Madawaska Mines Limited (formerly Faraday Uranium Mines Limited), with plants capable of handling a total of 4,()()() tons (3,629 tonnes) of ore a day, were at one time in production. A fourth company, Greyhawk Uranium Mines Limited, operated a small mine whose ore was shipped for custom treatment to the nearby Faraday mill. Canadian Dyno Mines Limited ceased operations in June 1960. In June 1963 the Bicroft Mine was closed and a year later Faraday closed because of contract completion. But in 1975, Faraday (now called Madawaska) was re-opened but closed again in 1982. During 1959, the peak year, these four mines produced an estimated 1,100 tons (998 tonnes) of uranium precipitates, which represented nearly 7 per cent of Canada's output for that year(Fig. 1).The deposits occur in pegmatitic granite dykes in a region of high-grade metamorphic and metasomatic rocks. Uranium distribution is usually controlled by the distribution of mafic minerals, particularly hematite and magnetite, and by late fractures. The best visual indicators for uranium concentration are hematite staining in the pegmatite, followed by the amount of mafic inclusions or crystals. The Bancroft area orebodies are the only known deposits of the general pegmatitic class in Canada that contained economic deposits of uranium. The principal radioactive minerals are uraninite and uranothorite. By comparison with many other pegmatitic occurrences, some of the ore bodies are unusually large, persistent in depth and relatively rich in uranium minerals. At the end of 1981, total ore reserves were estimated at 1,500,00 short tons (1,360, 000 tonnes) averaging 0.11 % U3O8."

"The addition of fines to rod mill feed has been employed at Inco Metals' Frood-Stobie Mill since 1973. The fines, which act as a ""lubricant"", causes an increase in the pulp fluidity and assists the flow of feed through the rod mill. Fines addition was one of the main factors which led to improved rod mill performance and the elimination of rod mill tangles.This paper outlines the testwork performed in evaluating the addition of fines, and summarizes the beneficial effects on rod mill grinding efficiency, throughput rates, power consumption and noise level. INTRODUCTIONFrood-Stobie Mill is situated within the Frood-Stobie mining complex, on the southern rim of the Sudbury Basin. The Mill commenced operations in November, 1967, and has since processed in excess of sixty-five million tons of ore. Minus 8-inch ore is delivered to the Mill's coarse ore bin by two surface conveyor belts from the Frood and Stobie Mines, while Little Stobie ore is transferred by underground conveyor and hoisted directly into the coarse ore bin a long with additional Stobie Mine ore."

"The effect of thermomechanical processing (TMP) including cold working by tension or rolling before aging on mechanical properties and a dispersion of secondary phase particles of an AA2519 alloy (Al–5.64Cu–0.33Mn–0.23Mg–0.15Zr–0.11Ti–0.09V–0.08Fe–0.01Si (wt. %)) was examined. It was shown that the use of tension to impart pre-strain =10% in the alloy provides the best combination of properties in peak aging condition of the material. The AA2519T87 alloy processed by tension exhibits the yield stress, ultimate tensile strength and elongation to failure of 425.4±2.4, 475±2.4, 12.1±0.4, respectively. The one pass rolling leads to -5% decreases in yield stress and –20% decreases in ductility. Dislocations serve as heterogeneous nucleation sites for ?'-phase precipitation. The positive effect of tension is attributed to the formation of more homogeneous dislocation structure, uniform distribution of ?'-phase particles with higher aspect ratio. Precipitation of the O–phase plates on {111}a habit plane was detected. In addition it was shown that the low angle boundaries are heterogeneous nucleation sites for ?' and O particles.INTRODUCTION Precipitation-hardened alloys are a commercially important group of the materials because their mechanical properties can be modified by treating and changing the microstructure. Age-hardenable aluminum alloys belonging to the Al–Cu–Mg system are widely used due to their attractive combination of high specific strength, good fracture toughness and enhanced creep resistance attributed to the highly efficient strengthening by the ?'-phase (Palmer, StJohn, Nie, & Qian, 2017). An AA2519 alloy exhibiting superior mechanical properties among high-strength Al–Cu alloys (2XXX-serie) due to minor Mg additives. It is known that, in alloys with high Cu/Mg ratio (=5.6) the classic precipitation sequence (Palmer et al., 2017; Wang & Starink, 2005; Wang et al., 2010) of supersaturated solid solution (SSSS) decomposition occurs: SSSS ? The McClean Lake mill is located approximately 850 kilometers north of Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada and is operated by Orano Canada Inc. (Orano). The mill was designed to process high grade uranium ores, and in 2014 completed a multiyear expansion to increase its production capacity to 24 Mlbs U3O8 per annum. This expansion included significant changes to the mill’s secondary leach circuit in support of safely processing high grade ore directly from the Cigar Lake mine. In particular, inter-stage pumps were introduced for slurry transfer between the secondary leach tanks, replacing the original pressure feed forward operation. The design and selection process for these pumps was strongly influenced by the uncertainty related to actual radiation dose exposure when processing undiluted high grade ore (up to 30%U), and consequently the desire to maintain minimal occupancy in the vault enclosure containing the secondary leach tanks. These constraints resulted in the decision to install positive displacement pumps above the leach tanks in a suction-lift configuration. Operating experience with this design has shown that the pump capacity is significantly de-rated due to process solution gas-entrainment and pipe scale build-up, particularly in the front end of the secondary leach circuit where reagent dosage is high. Experience processing high grade ore also provided accurate radiation dose data to demonstrate that the level of occupancy in the leaching vault enclosure could be re-evaluated to accommodate alternate pump configurations. This paper reviews the lessons learned and improvements made to safely increase the capacity and reliability of the leach inter-stage pump system.

"INTRODUCTIONGold is found in many natural states, native nuggets, loose grain in river sands, veins in rock, as well as associated with sulphides, oxides, etc., disseminated more or less minutely.Its high value in recent years has spawned new technologies to win values from sources once considered too lean for commercial recovery. Cyanide leaching from fine milled ore or tailings, from upstream recovery operations, coupled with adsorption onto relatively coarse granules of activated carbon, concentrate the gold enough to be converted to bullion by time-honoured methods.The carbon granules are fragile. Size degradation in handling must be minimized not only to prevent loss of gold on fine fragments of carbon that could pass with the barren tailings, but to maintain adsorption efficiency. Besides, the granulated carbon itself is costly. Circular Vibroscreens are winning acceptance for dewatering carbon granules thanks to their gentle yet effective performance in gold recovery systems around the world. The system at Equity Silver is illustrative.BackgroundEquity Silver Mines Ltd., Houston, British Columbia, first began production in September 1980. In 1984, a feasibility study showed that additional gold and silver could be economically recovered through cyanide leaching of the flotation tailing.Although the carbon-in-pulp (ClP) or carbon-in-leach (CIL) process is commonly used for extracting precious metals from slurries, the use of circular vibrating screens, and Vibroscreens in particular, for the carbon circuit is an innovation that cuts costs.Rectangular vibrating screens have been the conventional separation mechanism of choice across North America. In contrast, the use of Vibroscreens has been proven to be less costly for the initial purchase and installation. Also, these circular vibrating screens require less power and less space. A description of Equity Silver Mines' process shows how these screens have been successfully integrated into the system."

"Horizontal wells in coal seams, Qinshui basin, China are prone to wellbore instability problems induced by drilling, completion and production operations due to the presence of natural cleat network, anisotropy with regard to permeability, brittleness and mechanically weak property of the coal rock. The mechanism of wellbore instability in coal seams is very different from that in conventional formations, the traditional wellbore stability study methods therefore, are not proper for wellbore stability analysis in coal.In this study, the mechanism and controlling of wellbore stability of coal seams in the Qinshui basin was investigated through theoretical modeling, laboratory experiment and field operation. Firstly, a new physical model of wellbore stability for highly-cleated coalbed was proposed, considering the combined effect of mechanical mechanism and reservoir characteristics, specifically, taking the effect of reservoir pore pressure in the vicinity of the wellbore on the wellbore stability into account. Then experiments on the triaxial stress evaluation were conducted at laboratory where rock mechanical parameters such as Poisson's ratio, Young's modulus, compressive strength, tensile strength, angle of internal friction and cohesion ability were measured respectively. The in situ stress at different depths in four wells of Zheng 1-303, Zheng 1-308, Zheng 1-309, and Zheng 1-310 in the Zhengzhuang were calculated, and the collapse pressure and formation breakdown pressure were predicted through the theoretical model we developed. Finally, by comparing the maximum collapse pressure and minimum breakdown pressure of the four wells in the coal as well as in the roof and floor of the coal seams, the fluid weight window for safe drilling in each coal seams was determined, and appropriate approaches against anti-sloughing in coal seams, Qinshui basin were applied in the field operation.The wellbore stability was found not only related to the wellbore pressure, but also affected by the pressure in the reservoir through the theoretical model. The fluid weight window for safe drilling in each coal seams varies with the coefficient of wellbore stability in the model. The laboratory experiment results indicate that the roof and floor of 3 # coal in Qinshui basin has high breaking strength, high heterogeneity, and are easy to collapse and breakdown. In addition, the whole rock mineral analysis shows that 3 # coal in the Duanshi block has high clay content, resulting in the phenomenon of hydration swelling as clay encountered water, and leading to unstable coal and extreme large drilling uncertainties. Due to the effect of the unstable rock mechanical properties of the roof and floor formation on the wellbore stabilizing, drilling parameters, drilling fluid performance and BHA were optimized during the drilling process according to the formation properties, rock mechanical properties and drilling techniques in the field operation."

More than seat-of-the-pants judgments and old-boy networks are required to anticipate these risks and to take actions appropriate to offsetting them. A system for making political forecasts, called the Prince System, and a series of charts relaying risk s to a production of key minerals will be presented.IntroductionFirm s with extractive operations outside their home country do not have to be told that political stability and government decisions play a big role in the success o f their operations. The takeover of copper firm s in Chile during the Allende administration in 1971 and the recent decision by Venezuela to reduce Reynolds Metals equity share in a smelting operation from 50% to 28% are two examples of hundreds of events that have determined the profitability of extractive operations over the past decade. Both risks and opportunities for international firms seeking to produce and market raw materials are heavily affected by political conditions. While news of political events travel much faster than in the past and host governments are more clever in shaping the risks as well as the opportunities, politics has always been part of the mining business.What has changed is the need to be more systematic in approaching the assessment of political conditions and how it affects business. The increasing costs of extractive operations, the need for long-range planning, the importance of financial arrangements and the world-wide scope of man y firm s' activities require that the assessment be updated continuously and be comparable across different countries and different types of investments. Political risk analysis, the assessment o f macro-political changes and specific governmental decision s on the operations of extractive industries needs to become as systematic and integrated into corporate decision -making as economic analysis has become over the past two decade s."

Specialist Machine Developments (SMD) is a design and manufacturing company involved in the design of Remotely Operated Vehicles (ROV?s), ploughs, trenchers and mining machines for use in submerged environments. Established in 1971, the company has made over 500 vehicles for subsea use. These range in size from small remotely operated swimming vehicles with a weight of less than a tonne to heavy duty seabed crawling machines with a weight of up to 310 tonnes (in air). Primarily, these machines have been designed for offshore vessel-based applications, but the machines are equally suited to other submerged mining applications onshore. Many onshore deposits can technically and theoretically be mined using currently available submerged mining ROV technology. Similar equipment to that in use subsea could easily be fast-tracked into use to extend the life of opencast mines facing severe hydrological problems. It could also easily be used to mine vertical ore-bodies where the stripping ratio has become uneconomical due to increasing depth. In some cases mining ROVs could even be suitable for use as the primary extraction method for a new mine. Exploration and extraction techniques used in oil and gas gradually developed and moved from land to offshore in the middle of the last century. Are we about to witness a similar shift with other minerals? This paper describes the design concepts of submerged mining equipment, targetted subsea mineral deposits, the suitability of submerged mining ROVs for onshore deposits, limits to their application and parallel research and development activities which will help to accelerate the use of such equipment in the emerging submerged mining sector.

Building Information Modeling is a prevailing methodology in the building industry and half (by length) of the world's shield tunnels are in Japan. Accordingly, for shield tunnels from 2005 to 2007, we developed a product model called IFC-ShieldTunnel, which is based on Industry Foundation Classes (IFC), in order to meet the future demand for such a product model. IFC-ShieldTunnel was developed by adding new elements that are specific to shield tunnels and that are not included in the original IFC. The added elements include shafts, segments (A, B, and K types), waterproofing elements, segment joint elements, and ring joint elements. Furthermore, soil layers and void elements were created. Recently, we updated the product model by re-organizing the entities and correcting errors. We deployed the updated IFCShieldTunnel model in the construction of an actual shield tunnel in Tokyo for about a year from August 2010 in order to check its feasibility. In the verification process, first, segments were modeled using Autodesk Revit Structure 2011 and property data were assigned to each segment element. Next, a mapping between the original attributes of the entities of IFC and properties of IFC-ShieldTunnel segments was developed. Using this mapping and IFC?s IfcBuildingElementProxy function, we were able to convert the IFC data from Revit Structure 2011 to IFC-ShieldTunnel automatically. Segment data were also converted from Revit Structure to Google SketchUp by IFC-ShieldTunnel. Furthermore, the construction scheduling and cost data were converted from Revit Structure to EXCEL for 4D and 5D analyses of construction. We interviewed engineers who used IFC-ShieldTunnel and received positive comments about the utilization of the product model. Overall, our test demonstrated the feasibility of IFC-ShieldTunnel. In future work, we plan to apply IFC-ShieldTunnel to more projects and test its practicality.

?It is not the strongest of the species that survives, nor the most intelligent. It is the one that is most adaptable to change.? Charles Darwin. Canada?s mining and exploration companies have evolved over the past century from essentially a pick-and-shovel industry to a high-tech industrial sector. This evolution has occurred in fits and starts, and has been driven by the shifting environment of economic, technical and social opportunities and pressures in Canada. As labour costs have gone up, and labour availability has gone down, the industry has evolved more efficient processes. As mineral prices have increased or fallen, the industry has evolved either by expanding or shrinking production, or by changing processes to adapt to the newly prevailing conditions. As stringent environmental protection legislation has been implemented, the industry has adapted accordingly, and has substantially changed its mindset to incorporate sustainability into its way of doing business. These changes have occurred over a number of decades, and have usually occurred as the industry?s reluctant response to pressures it couldn?t evade. This model mirrors the classical paradigm of natural selection where evolution is driven by pressures external to the organism (or organization) ? change occurs to the degree necessary for survival and prosperity, but generally no further. In recent years a new paradigm has started to come into play in Canadian mining and exploration. Rather than only a reactive response to the external economic, social and technical factors, groups within the mining community are becoming proactive in developing strategies for future adaptive change. Instead of each against the other, they are developing more sophisticated paradigms where they can both compete against (such as in marketing) and cooperate with (such as for tech development) their fellow organizations. Most importantly, they are seeing individual and national advantage in a collaborative Canadian approach to address the advantages of overseas competitors who often have lower labour costs, lesser environmental standards, or more accessible markets and transportation. This has translated into large-scale mining community support for the Canada Mining Innovation Council, and its programs in exploration, mining, processing, HR development, energy and environmental stewardship. This new paradigm is adaptive to the current environment but is substantially different from the older way of doing business in two major ways ? it is based on a collaborative approach to competitive advantage, and it is highly proactive rather than reactive. All the programs have their priorities determined principally by the mining and exploration companies, whose first obligation is to determine the long-term research priorities of the industry as a whole, rather than for their individual companies. Only after industry consensus on priorities does the research community become engaged in the implementation of specific projects to address those identified priorities. A goal of the program is to effectively create a virtual mining research laboratory, by engaging all the major research centres in the country. This approach is being actively adopted by much of the Canadian mining community, and argues well for the adaptability and long-term survival of mining in Canada.

A la mi-octobre 1973, l'organisation des pays exportateurs de pétrole (O.P.E.P.) surprend le reste du monde en annonçant que le prix du brut grimpe à S.12$ le baril. .. on connaît la suite.On sait qu'au point de vue énergétique, le nord du Québec est l'une des régions les plus avantagées au monde. Malgré le fait que notre climat soit plutôt défavorable, nous sommes assurés d'une alimentation électrique à toute fin pratique éternelle, contrairement aux autres régions du globe. En effet, l' hydro-électricité ne représente que 2.S070 de toute l'électricité produite dans le monde.Une bonne partie de l'énergie consommée dans les industries minières de la Côte-Nord est utilisée pour produire la vapeur. Or, il y a plusieurs avantages à produire de la vapeur à partir de l'électricité:1. Le prix d'achat d'une chaudière électrique peut être moins de la moitié de celui d'une chaudière à carburant fo ssile.2. Le prix de l'électricité est plus bas que celu i des autres sources d'énergie disponibles dans notre région.3. Hydro-Québec offre un programme spéci al de subventions et un prix garanti de l'électricité, inférieur de 10070 à celui de tout autre combustible (1982).4. Souvent il est possible d'utiliser l'énergie hors pointe à un coût minime.S. L'espace requis pour un chaudière électrique est beaucoup moindre. Par exemple: une chaudière d'une capacité de 120000 Ibs/hre ne demande que SO pi? de plancher, c'est-à-dire un cercle de 8 pieds de diamètre comparativement à environ 600 à 700 pi2 pour une chaudière au ma zout.6. Aucun espace n'est requis pour l'entreposage du carburant.7. Aucun espace n'est requis pour la cheminée.8. Il n' y a que très peu de pièce s mécaniques, donc ces chaudières demandent très peu d 'entretien .9. Les chaudières électriques ne génèrent aucune pollution, donc on n'a pas besoin d'équipement coûteux de contrôle de la pollution.10. Ces chaudières sont extrêmement rapides. En effet, on peut passer de zéro à la production maximum en moins d'une heure si la chaudière est froide et en quelques secondes seulement si la chaudière est à sa température d'opération.11. L'efficacité de ces appareils est au moins de 9S% par rapport à 80-8S% pour les chaudières au ma zout. De plus, cette efficacité demeure la même quel que soit le niveau de production de la chaudière. Il faut faire attention ici: les manufacturiers proposent des rendements de 99% et plus, mais ceci ne tient compte que des pertes de chaleur à travers l'enveloppe, et de l'énergie nécessaire au fonctionnement de la pompe de circulation. Il faut ajouter à cela l'énergie perdue à cause de la vidange qui varie selon le type de chaudière et selon la qualité de l'eau d'alimentation.12. Ajoutons simplement que ces appareils sont très facile à opérer du fait qu'il n'y a aucun système complexe à manipuler.Cependant, il y a un inconvénient non négligeable à utiliser l'électricité comme source d'énergie: comme on ne peut pas emmagasiner l'énergie électrique, nous sommes à la merci du fournisseur."

Due to recent regulations limiting tolerated lead concentrations in copper alloys, new recycling strategies have to be considered. This study investigates the suitability of technical approaches in order to recycle leaded copper alloys exemplified by CuZn39Pb2 and produce an alloy in compliance with future lead regulations in the European Union. Three pyrometallurgical methods are considered to achieve this goal, namely vacuum distillation, intermetallic precipitation and fractional crystallisation. The impact of essential process parameters i.e. pressure, temperature, time, atmosphere and quantity of additives are identified using thermochemical and kinetic modelling. An experimental implementation reveals a general suitability of all three refining processes. However, the individual efficiency of the different methods strongly differs. Thus, a detailed assessment is carried out in order to provide an evaluation on the efficiencies of these methods from a technological, economical and environmental point of view. Taking a possible industrial realisation into account, the authors recommend the approach of vacuum distillation, although the energy demanded is comparatively high due to the enthalpy of evaporation for zinc, or rather, lead. However, required lead concentrations can be reached quickly without introducing an external element to the material. The prediction of selectivity and evaporation speed, which are immanent variables for a successful implementation, can be validated experimentally. INTRODUCTION In 2016 approximately 1 million tonnes of leaded copper alloy semi-finished goods with an average lead content of 2.1 Ma% have been produced in the European Union (EU). The global production in the same period exceeded 5.5 million tonnes, while the lead concentration has stayed constant at around 2.4 Ma% for the last 50 years. Up to 80 % of the current production volume is covered with end-of-life scraps, which are used for direct re-melting, depending on the alloy composition. Lead has been a popular alloying element in copper alloys in general, and in particular in brass due to its positive impact on various mechanical, physical and chemical properties, especially machinability. Health and environmental concerns were drivers for many governments to implement limitations on lead. In order to further utilise the resource potential of leaded copper scrap, it is inevitable to develop methods to efficiently eliminate lead from circulation as far as possible. "The Uranium deposit of Gunnar Mines, Limited, is on the south shore of Crackingstone peninsula in the Beaverlodge area of northern Saskatchewan.The ore consists of disseminated pitchblende and uranophane in brecciated syenite, and forms a tubular or pipelike body, outcropping at the surface and plunging southward at about 45 degrees for a known length of1,400 feet (see Figure I). The upper portion is being removed by open-pit mining to a depth of 300 feet below adjacent Lake Athabasca. The remainder will require underground mining methods (see Figure 2).The property was staked in July, I 952, and the orebody was subsequently defined by about 70,000 feet of diamond drilling. A 1,250-ton mill was completed in 1955, and production commenced in September of that year with ore from the open-pit operation. The mill is presently being increased to 1,650 tons capacity, and a three-compartment vertical shaft is being sunk to 1,250 feet in preparation for underground mining.GeologyThe mine property is underlain by an assemblage of Precambrian metasediments known locally as paragneiss, granite-gneiss, and syenite. These lie on the southeast limb of a southwest-plunging anticline, strike about north 75 degrees east, and dip southward at about 45 degrees. Para- gneiss outcrops in the northwestern half of the claim group, and again on the islands south of St. Mary's Channel. The granite-gneiss lies conform-ably within the paragneiss and makes up the southeastern part of the property. The syenite forms an irregular, triangular-shaped mass within, and near the footwall of, the granite-gneiss band. Small lenticular bodies of mafic rocks are also present, the former being most prevalent in the paragneiss.The granite-gneiss is coarse to medium-grained, pink to grey, well foliated, and composed of feldspar (65 per cent), quartz (20 per cent), chlorite, and minor mica. The general concordance of its contacts with paragneiss and the absence of intrusive relationships along these, the presence of uniformly oriented inclusions of obviously sedimentary origin within the granite-gneiss, and the variation in colour and texture across the strike all strongly suggest that this member represents a granitized sedimentary rock."

Donald Cranstone holds B.Sc. (Honours) and M.Sc. degrees in Geology from the University of Manitoba and a Ph.D. in Economic Geology from Harvard University. He has worked as a mine geologist, a provincial geological survey geologist and as a senior exploration geologist. He joined what is now the Minerals and Metals Sector of Natural Resources Canada in 1971, where he has been a commodity specialist for gold, for copper and another 28 metals. He is a senior mineral economist, currently engaged in analysis of mineral exploration and discovery success in Canada and of the future of the Canadian mining industry. Abstract This paper examines the history of Canadian non-petroleum mineral production. The outlook over the next 25 years, for mining in Canada and in each province and territory, is reviewed. The outlook for mining in Canada and in most provinces/territories is favourable, but problems seem likely in a few jurisdictions unless new orebodies are brought into production. In terms of exploration potential, Canada consistently ranks among the top three countries in the world. Over the last eight years, Canada has consistently been second only to Australia as a destination for exploration investment. For the first time, Canada is ranked in terms of total mineral production, including coal and construction materials, relative to all the countries of the world including countries of the former communist bloc.
