Block toppling in natural rock slopes has been under investigation since the 1970?s. De Freitas and Watters (1973) introduced the term ?toppling? to describe the movements of rock slopes by rotation in steeply dipping beds. The Lornex pit case history from British Columbia (Canada) was chosen to study the effect of mining on the stability of toppling rock slopes. A discrete element approach that allows fracturing of intact material was applied successfully to model the composite rock slide-rock topple movement. Three main movement modes were observed in the field and the numerical model; the sliding of the top of the slope exposed normal scarps, the toppling at the middle part of the slope exposed obsequent scarps facing opposite to the slope face, and dilation of the rock caused by fracturing at the toe formed loose material. The development of the rupture surface at the toe of the slope was traced and did not evolve into a continuous rupture surface throughout the slope both in the field and the numerical simulation. Good agreement was achieved between the deformations recorded in the field and the numerical simulation.

A monolithic caisson is one of the major structural components commonly used in the construction of docks, breakwaters, and container terminal quay walls. Since the structure of monolithic caissons is typical and somewhat simple, its design process is also typical and repetitive, but still time consuming. To reduce the total time and enhance productivity, we developed a parametric model in Revit to automatically generate a 3D model of a monolithic caisson. It is designed to generate the Revit model of a caisson with concrete body and reinforcing bars. The size of caisson, the number of reinforcing bars, and the space between reinforcing bars are automatically changed when users update parameters. This paper presents how we developed this parametric family in Revit for monolithic caisson design and how it would enhance its design process.

"During the past few years emphasis has been placed on the importance of major faults, fault zones, and associated structures in localizing ore deposition. This interest has developed partly through experience in mining camps in other parts of the world, and partly by the discovery of such structures associated with ore deposits in the Abitibi region, northwestern Quebec. The recognition of these structures has been brought about chiefly by detailed mapping that has been gradually extended along most of the southern gold belt of Quebec and across adjacent parts of Ontario. In the Chibougamau region of northern Abitibi, progress has been made in mapping major faults by using aeroplane photographs with a scale of about 1,000 feet to 1 inch for field mapping. These studies have shown that many large faults occur in the Abitibi region; also that there is a relationship, direct or indirect, between faults and mineral deposition. The faults are, however, of more than one type and age, and this should be clearly appreciated in any planned programme for prospecting this great region adequately.Geology of the Abitibi RegionGeneral GeologyFaults of more than one age and type occur in the Abitibi region. In order to appreciate some of the age relationships of the faults, a brief summary of the historical aspects and major structural features of the geology (fig. 1) is necessary. These historical aspects may be briefly summarized in chronological order as follows:(1) Accumulation of Archæan lavas and associated pyroclastic rocks, either alternating with, or essentially followed by, deposition of sedimentary rocks, and interrupted at least once by local and perhaps regional folding and erosion."

"Proterozoic plutonic and volcanic rocks in the Franklin Mountains, west Texas, exhibit similar values in average concentrations of equivalent uranium (eU), equivalent thorium (eTh) and equivalent potassium (eK) when compared to Proterozoic igneous rocks of the southwestern United States. Variations of radioelement concentrations for all Proterozoic igneous rocks of the Franklin Mountains range from 1.1 to 357.1 ppm U, 2.1to 259.1 ppm Th and 2.5 to 10.2% K.Recent geologic mapping of the Proterozoic rocks in the Franklin Mountains revealed several types of granites previously unrecognized, and these warrant further exploration for U and Th resources. Fluorite-bearing granites and riebeckite pegmatites are likely targets for further investigation, as these have the highest U and Th concentrations compared to all other granites.IntroductionThis is a summary of the paper presented at the CIM Geology Division Uranium Symposium held in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, September 8-13, 1981. "Modern microprocessor systems make it possible to use several variables to anticipate changes in the process and to react with responses before upsets can be magnified by the process or by control action.Through tighter control, ""insurance"" can be eliminated from process set points without affecting product quality. In actual operation with a traveling grate furnace this control philosophy has produced savings of up to 20% in fuel consumption and 8% in fan power usage while producing a more consistent quality product.IntroductionA straight grate indurator, or pelletizing machine, consists of a continuo us moving train of pallets on which a feed stream of unfired, ""green"" pellets is deposited on a hearth layer o f fired pellets. This bed moves through several zones in the furnace where it is dried, preheated, fired and cooled by streams of gases which are pulled or blown through the bed by a series o f large process fan s. Control systems for straight grate plants are designed to maintain gas flow through the machine to ensure that sufficient time and heat are available to raise the temperature of the entire green bed to 1300°C where hematite bonding take s place.For the pas t two year s a new approach to control systems using microprocessor-based instrumentation has been designed and tested in an existing plant with a straight grate indurating furnace processing magnetite ore. The purpose of the test was to determine the most efficient operating setpoints for all levels of production above fifty per cent of design capacity. Through a combination of feed forward control, variable setpoints and additional loops, significant savings have been realized. Thus far the project has taught us much about control systems design and operation, energy utilization, and the process itself."

"THE need for continuing education has been recognized only in fairly recent years as a major concern of the engineering profession. Formerly, it was acknowledged that engineers were required, at least informally, to follow the professional literature and to give some attention to new technical and technological developments. However, those relaxed days, when progress could be followed in a casual or incidental evening of reading, have disappeared in these days of mushrooming information. The engineer is now in the position of the man trying to control the flow from a fire hydrant with a child's pail. Our problem is that of developing an effective flow system -be it trough, hose, pipe or a bigger pail.The first step in achieving an effective means for continuing the education process is to realize that the need for the system is really an outgrowth of an increasingly sophisticated society. It is merely one more symptom of that society; others would• include the facts that new engineering graduates are more highly trained than those of several years ago, that graduate schools are now the norm and that even some fairly recent technologies are becoming outdated. There-fore, let us examine the education-al systems from which the bulk of the increasing sophistication has grown."

IT IS ENOOURAGING indeed to note during the past year that, despite a slackening off in many markets and with numerous major difficulties and problems to solve, the mining industry of Nova Scotia was maintained at a very high level. The value of the Province's mineral production for 1957 amounted to approximately $65,000,000. This represents a drop of only 1.5 per cent from the figure of the previous year. Coal Atlantic Collieries, Ltd., opened a new coal mine during the year at Bras d'Or. This colliery is equipped with the most modern type of mechanical equipment available, with transport of the ?coal by a belt-conveyor system. Other mines in the Province continued to mechanize their operations by the addition of Diesel haulage locomotives and other mechanized mining equipment. New wash plants are in operation and .an additional one is planned.

Sand casting of steel is a process that offers the greatest design flexibility and highest metallurgical versatility. However, competition from other methods of fabrication is quite keen, constantly forcing the steel casting industry to the production of better quality castings at lower costs. New methods and materials have been put to use in the last ten years by foundries everywhere. This paper, in the form of a progress report, deals with new methods, processes and materials used by Canadian steel foundries for regular production, as well as with developments still in the initial but promising stages. T HE casting of steel to shape is the most direct method of producing steel parts in their final form. It is a basically economical process both as to cost and production time; it is also a process that offers design engineers the greatest flexibility and highest metallurgical versatility. The Polar Continental Shelf Project was initiated in 1959 to provide an administrative and logistic vehicle for research in the physical sciences of the land, sea and channel area of the Arctic Archipelago. Most of the scientists are supplied on secondment from the professional branches of the Department. The yearly expeditions number some eighty scientists and sub-professional staff, and they are supported by a fleet of fixed-winged aircraft and helicopters. Accurate positioning is obtained by the use of a Decca Lambda navigational system which is moved as the area of interest is shifted. The Project is designed to accommodate not only physical scientists, but to provide facilities for other scientist who may have an interest in the area under study. The main research scope of the Project includes topographical surveys, hydrography, oceanography, geology, including marine sedimentary studies, gravity, magnetics, seismology, glaciology and geography. The Polar Continental Shelf Project was initiated and recommended by the Committee on Northern Development in 1958.

"Ilo Copper Smelter operates since 2007 with an ISASMELTTM furnace as a single smelting unit (1,200,000 tpy) associated with two Rotary Holding Furnaces for separation of matte and slag, and which directly produces a discard slag. Southern Peru continually has been improving the slag chemistry of its ISASMELTTM furnace in order to reduce copper losses, given its big economic impact due to large slag mass generation. The present paper describes the influence of the CaO, Al2O3 and magnetite content in the slag of the ISASMELTTM furnace correlated with the SiO2/Fe ratio and its liquidus slag. Also it defines the best slag chemistry and operating practice in order to reduce the copper losses without compromise the bricks life of the furnace.INTRODUCTIONIlo Copper Smelter of Southern Peru (Grupo Mexico) is located on the southern coast of Peru, and treats mainly copper concentrates produced in its own mines (Toquepala and Cuajone).The modernized smelter was commissioned in 2007 and operates with an ISASMELT™ furnace as a single smelting unit (1,200,000 tpy), which is associated with two Rotary Holding Furnaces (RHF) for separation of matte and slag. This slag is directly sent to the dump. Figure 1 shows the smelter flow diagram.The ISASMELT™ process is a bath-smelting process using a single lance. The lance tip is immersed into a molten slag bath contained within the stationary, vertical, refractory-lined ISASMELT™ furnace. The injection of oxygen-enriched air, through the lance into the slag results in a highly turbulent molten bath. Feed material falling into the turbulent bath from above reacts rapidly, resulting in extremely high productivity for a relatively small bath volume."

Caland Ore Company Limited, a subsidiary of Inland Steel Company of Chicago, Illinois, leased an iron ore deposit from Steep Rock Iron Mines Limited on January 1, 1953.. This deposit lay underneath a lake and was covered with 161,000,000 cubic yards of Jake bottom material, mainly silt. Removal of this material was done on a contract dredging basis. This contract was divided into a plant phase and an operating phase. The plant phase consisted of supplying two cutter-type suction dredges, each with two booster pumps in the discharge lines. All six pumps were centrifugal, had 36" discharges and were powered by 10,000 horsepower electric motors. Peak demand was 59,157 kilowatts. One hundred and forty miles of steel tower line were built to bring power to the site. The balance of the plant consisted of tugs, 12 miles of discharge line, varying from 36" diameter to 42" diameter and attendant land-based equipment. A number of interesting dams were constructed

"The property owned by Senator-Rouyn Mines, Limited, is in Rouyn township about 17'2 miles southwest of the town of Rouyn. It adjoins the Chadbourne claims of Noranda Mines, Limited, on the south and the Bagamac property on the ·west. It includes seven claims-block 44, blocks 80 to 83 and blocks 96 and 97; the mine is wholly in blocks 44 and 82.Late in 1936 gold was discovered in an outcrop of rusty weathering carbonate rock near the north end of block 44, and the following year the present Company was organized to proceed with the development of the property. During 1937-38, 17,000 feet of diamond drill core were bored to determine the extent of the ore deposit at depth. From October 15th, 1940, to April 15th, 1941, the ore was hauled to the mill at the Arntfield mine for treatment. The mill on the Senator-Rouyn property started on April 25th, 1941, and has been in practically continuous operation since than time. To the end of 1946, 574,874 tons of ore, from which gold having a value of $3,836,450 was recovered, were treated in the mill.GEOLOGYThe rocks exposed at the Senator-Rouyn mine, except in the southern part of the property, are almost wholly quartz diorite, part of an irregular mass that extends west from the town of Rouyn along the north shore of Noranda lake and thence southwest across the Senator-Rouyn claims. In the northern part of the propertyt inclusions of rhyolite occur here and there in the diorite. In the southern part the predominant rock is dacite and in the east-central part of block 44 claim andesite. Dykes of andesite, quartz syenite, and later diabase also occur on the property.The andesite of the Abitibi volcanics is not exposed on the property, but has been intersected in three diamond drill holes, one on the eastern boundary of block 44 and two farther west within the block. This andesite is probably the western end of a band of pillowed andesite well exposed in the Larose claim to the east."

Natural hazards such as rock bumps, methane, coal dust explosions, airborne respirable dust, outbursts of gas and rocks, water, radiation caused by natural radioactive materials, spontaneous fires, and climatic hazards, occurring in the Polish hard coal mines, should be controlled. These hazards are characterized by different scale levels numbered from 2?5. To recognize the amount and levels of hazards, research works were carried out in 109 mining districts of mines belonging to Jastrzebska Spólka Weglowa, Katowicki Holding Weglowy and Kompania Weglowa. These are 86 % of all mines and could be regarded as representative of the majority of Polish mining. The hazards have been classified as regards the frequency of their occurrence as: commonly occurring ? with a frequency of 100 % (like airborne respirable dust and fire hazards), high occurrence frequency ? frequency from 60 to below 100 % (methane hazard ? 83.5 %, coal dust explosion hazard ? 92.0 %, and water hazard ? 99.1 %), medium occurrence frequency ? from 30 to below 60 % (rock-bump hazard ? 52.3 % and climatic hazards ? 51.4 %), and episodic occurrence frequency ? below 30 % (outburst of gas and rocks and radioactive hazards). The dynamics of effects of growth in hazard levels to their intolerable values is diverse. Some of them are passive in nature, which allows for longer observation of changes and appropriate early response (as for climatic and spontaneous fire hazards). However the majority of them take on the character of disasters, like methane or coal dust explosions and damage of the excavation structure ? as occurs after a rock-bump or rock outburst; and creation of an atmosphere unfit for breathing ? during open or spontaneous fires, or after gas outbursts containing methane. There are also latent hazards whose effects do not influence indeed a process of production; however they are detrimental to health when a worker is exposed for a long time to airborne respirable dust and radiation. For other types of hazards a level of danger may be only estimated. Since the systems monitoring allows a wider range of control, therefore, aside from rock-bump and methane hazards, there are monitored also fire hazards including measurements of other air parameters (velocity, pressure, humidity, temperature, O2, CO2 concentration). A few types of monitoring systems are used in Polish mines, like the monitoring systems for environmental parameters such as SMP-NT, SMP-NT/A, the telemetric systems CST-40, CST/A, including the computer-aided system for methanometry control officer SWµP, the computer-aided measuring systems KSP-1, KSP-2, KSP-2C, or the production and safety control system VENTURON. The underground part of the systems monitoring of natural hazards contains measuring devices and equipment for automatic control (power-off) of machines and electric devices in case of increased methane hazard. The surface part of the monitoring system allows the measuring data to be visualized and pre-alarm (warning) and alarm states to be displayed. Furthermore it makes it possible to archive and report the data and to control the underground supply and signalling devices. The EMAG Institute developed monitoring methods to extend a measuring range of monitored parameters (such as methane and fire hazards) as well as to monitor so far unmonitored hazards like dust hazards (by continuous monitoring of dust levels in mine air) and climatic hazards (by online monitoring climatic parameters of mine air).

"IT is indeed a pleasure to have the opportunity of addressing this group today. Not only does it give me the opportunity of meeting with representatives of what is considered by many to be the most dynamic segment of industry in Canada today, but it also allows me to talk about a subject of para-mount interest to myself, the development of the North, and to explain, if even only briefly, some of our beliefs and hopes in this regard.It is inconceivable that all lands north of the 60th parallel, representing 35 per cent of Canada's total land area, which we believe contain a great natural resource potential, will remain as an undeveloped portion of Canada. The re-sources are there, although the people and private industry are as yet not there in sufficient numbers.It has been estimated that in the west and north of Canada there are 1.6 million cubic miles of sedimentary rocks. Of this figure, 342,-000 are thought to lie in Alberta, 115,000 in British Columbia and about 1 million cubic miles are thought to lie in Canada's northern regions, the bulk in the Arctic Islands. On the basis of apparent volumes of sedimentary rock, we estimate that as much as 13 billion barrels of petroleum may lie beneath the permafrost of the North-west Territories, another 3 billion barrels in the Yukon Territory and 33 billion barrels in the Arctic Islands. This is, indeed, a rich and elusive prize, and one which must be sought with a view to fulfilling demands on the production of petroleum."

"AS I begin my remarks this morning, please let me say how honoured and gratified I was to receive your invitation to address you here during your deliberations in historic Quebec City. The high esteem in which your Institute is held is reflected in the respect and deference accorded to it by industry across Canada. I feel privileged to be here with you today.I would like to discuss with you some applications of natural gas in the mining industry and suggest to you, in closing, some possible avenues of future development.Natural gas first became avail-able for industrial purposes in Northern Ontario in late 1958. Acceptance of natural gas, as a source of energy by the industry of that area, has been both widespread and gratifying. The mining industry of Northern Ontario has in-creased its annual use of natural gas by approximately 35 per cent each year since 1958. We believe that this trend will continue, al-though we will probably have to accept a more modest 10 per cent annual gain as the market approaches saturation. I would like to explain how we were able to do this and where all this gas is used. Our first sales were largely a matter of price-and the savings we offered were substantial."

EUROPEAN Russia is mainly a great plain, the average elevation of which is only 600 feet above sea level and the maximum elevation less than 1,200 feet (Figure 1). The main divide between the Arctic ocean and the Black sea and Caspian sea is an indistinguishable topographic feature from which the Dneiper and Don rivers flow southward to the Black sea and the Volga river to the Caspian. The valleys of these rivers are but little below the general level (Figure 2). To the south, this great, rolling plain is broken by a low ridge of Precambrian gneisses and intrusive rocks. The Crimea is an upland from which the descent to the Black Sea coast is precipitous (Figure 3). The Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic occupies the southern part of the plain. It is the southwestern unit of the Union, bordered by Rumania and Poland on the west and by the Crimean Soviet Socialist Republic on the south.

Conventional casting at low pouring temperature was employed to produce semisolid metal, SSM, billets of A356 Alloy. The deformation behavior of the as-cast SSM billets was studied using parallel plate compression viscometry. The compression tests were carried out at different applied pressures, and fractions solid. The rheological studies were conducted assuming the SSM slurry behaving like Newtonian and non Newtonian fluids respectively. Slurry flow, including flow through the charge, through the discharge grates, along the pulp lifters and its discharge from the mill is an important contributor to the efficiency of the grinding process within a SAG mill. Poor transport of finer ground material can adversely affect grinding leading to excess energy consumption and over-grinding of fine material. This paper extends a 1-way coupled DEM-SPH method to three dimensions and applies it to a 1.8 m diameter by 0.6 m long AG/SAG pilot mill. This provides detailed information on the internal flow of slurry within a SAG mill, including the prediction of dry regions and of slurry pooling. Full 3D analysis also allows the pulp flow patterns into and out of the mill via pulp lifter chamber to be investigated.

"Precious metals such as platinum, palladium, and rhodium are commonly used for automotive catalyst converters. To recover these metals with lower environmental load and cost, exposure to zinc vapor was proposed as a pretreatment prior to acid leaching. Alloying with zinc is expected to enhance dissolution of precious metals and reduce the amount of toxic chemical agents required for the leaching. This study examined the effect of the alloying pretreatment using model catalysts. Catalysts were immersed in leaching solutions for a predefined time with or without zinc vapor pretreatment, and the amount of dissolved metals was then evaluated. INTRODUCTIONAutomotive catalysts account for large portions of the world consumption of platinum (Pt), palladium (Pd), and rhodium (Rh) (Butler, J., 2011). Because of their limited production and high prices, recovery of the precious metals from spent catalysts is obviously an important issue. A representative structure of an automotive catalytic converter can be described as a monolithic ceramic support with a honeycomb structure which is coated with porous oxides such as those of aluminum (Al2O3), cerium (CeO2), and zirconium (ZrO2) (Heck & Farrauto, 2001; Matsumoto & Shinjoh, 2007). Small particles of precious metals, originally several nanometers or less, adhere to the oxides.Typical recovery processes for precious metals from scraps are shown in Figure 1 (a)-(c) (Habashi, 1997; Yoo, 1998; Shibata & Okuda, 2002). Precious metals can be recovered by using non-ferrous smelters as Figure 1 (a) shows. Smelted along with metals such as copper (Cu), precious metals and ceramics in the scraps are absorbed into the metal phase and slag phase, respectively. Because the metals separate from Cu as anode slime in successive electro-refining, such a process can recover precious metals as co-products of Cu. However, in order to prevent negative effects on the principal process, a specialized procedure is needed. Figure 1 (b) is a specialized approach in which scraps are melted at elevated temperature with Cu called the Rose process. Here Cu works as a collector metal, and the absorbed precious metals are then concentrated by oxidation of Cu. Such a process can separate precious metals from ceramics constituting catalyst converters. Smelting at high temperature, however, requires extensive equipment as well as a high amount of energy. On the other hand, hydrometallurgical processes may be effective to separate precious metals from ceramics into an aqueous solution, because chemical agents can act on these metals selectively (Figure 1 (c)). Leaching of precious metals, however, requires strong acid and oxidizing agents because of their corrosion resistance; this makes liquid waste disposal and the large environmental load controversial. To solve the problem, a metal vapor pretreatment was proposed (Okabe, Yamamoto, Kayanuma, & Maeda, 2003a, 2003b; Kayanuma, Okabe, Mitsuda, & Maeda., 2004; Kayanuma, Okabe, & Maeda, 2004; Itoh, Kayanuma, Miyake, Kimura, & Maeda, 2005). A flow diagram of the process using zinc (Zn) vapor is shown by Fig. 1(d). Exposed to Zn vapor, precious metals are expected to form alloys which dissolve more easily than pure precious metals, thus reducing the use of chemical agents and environmental load involved with successive leaching. In previous research (Sasaki, Miyaki, & Maeda, 2010; Sasaki & Maeda, 2010, 2012), dissolutions of precious metal alloys formed by Zn vapor treatment were examined in hydrochloric acid (HCl) using an electrochemical method, and it was confirmed that these metals dissolved at higher rates from the alloys than from their pure states (Figure 2). In this study, the availability of the alloying pretreatment was demonstrated by testing on model catalysts in leaching solutions."

There is increasing use of acid leach extraction methods at elevated temperatures and pressures by the mining industry. In many locations there are limited supplies of fresh water, and waters with higher chloride contents must be used, making conditions more corrosive. The fluids downstream of the main autoclave are hot, acidic, oxidizing and contain chlorides and present a challenge to the mining community to ensure reliable operation. Zeron 100 is a high strength superduplex stainless stee, that offers high corrosion resistance at a cost effective price. The paper presents a combination of laboratory data and service experience, particularly in the aggressive fluids found in downstream processing.
