Recently, there has been much debate as to the relevance of reporting financial results using the conventional accounting systems, which is based on historical costs, during a period of rapid inflation. In the following paragraphs , the symptoms, if not the causes, of inflation, its detrimental effect on the financial soundness of business in general and the financial reporting changes being advocated to overcome perceived weaknesses in the present financial reporting system in accounting for the effects of inflation will be reviewed. Finally, a course of action as a sound approach to the financial reporting problem will be recommended.

"As mines return to shafts to economically exploit deeper reserves, two methods mine owners use to minimize short term costs are: sinking shafts in phases and refurbishing old, existing shafts. While there may appear to be benefits to utilizing existing infrastructure, often this is not the case, resulting in missed deadlines and added costs. Similarly, if proper long term planning is not executed when sinking a shaft in phases, additional costs and downtime will be accrued. This paper will take an in depth look at both of these options with an eye towards optimizing costs, minimizing downtime, and facilitating construction. INTRODUCTION With the onset of mechanized mining and large capacity trucks, many mines turned away from shafts and began to use ramps to haul ore to surface. However, continual exploitation of mineral reserves located closer to surface, combined with the subsequent unearthing of additional resources at greater depths, forced mines to go deeper and deeper to extend the life and keep the operation running. In shallow mines, hauling ore by truck was an economical option. However, as mines get deeper, driving ramps takes additional time, and hauling over longer and longer distances becomes less economic, both in terms of cost and time. For this reason Mexico, in particular, has seen a jump in the number of shafts which have been put into production, as well as having a number of shafts in different stages of development and still more in the conceptual stages. Many of the shaft projects in Mexico are being designed in phases, with the hoist and equipment purchased capable of reaching the ultimate planned depth of the shaft, but with sinking operations stopping short at an intermediate depth. A loading pocket is then installed to start exploiting mineral at this depth sooner, with subsequent phases planned for a later date using either a rock pentice or bulkhead to separate the sinking operations from the active shaft above. Currently, we are directly involved in two such projects which are actively being deepened, as well as having seen various others already reach completion. If done properly with the long-term plan in mind, sinking in phases can be a very viable option, allowing for faster production while fully utilizing the equipment at various depths. However, there are many issues which can arise when sinking a shaft in phases that if not properly examined and planned for from the outset, have the potential to eliminate the gains hoped for when it was decided to sink in this manner."

Oxygen steelmaking (OSM) is not only the dominant steelmaking process but defines the structure of the industry. There are a number of myths regarding the future of OSM, which are false. These myths include that the EAF will become the dominant process in the near future, it is less costly to produce steel in an EAF and OSM is a mature technology and no new developments are occurring. These myths are shown to be false. Selected new developments are discussed such as post combustion, recycling of waste oxides, slag splashing and sensors.

"In the Timmins area, a close spatial and chronological association exists between gold deposits and two major stratabound carbonate-rich members and related quartz-feldspar porphyries. Synvo/canic and metamorphogenic are the two main types of mineralization recognized. Synvolcanic ores include the stratiform quartz-ankerite ""veins"", pyritic carbonates and chert-carbonate-tuff sedimentary rocks and epigenetic ventrelated breccias and stringer zones. Metamorphogenic ores consist of quartz-carbonate fracture fillings in dilatant zones developed during various phases of regional deformation and metamorphism. They are classically epigenetic in character.The evidence suggests a primary syngenetic enrichment of gold on the ocean floor and in vent areas during submarine felsic volcanism and related exhalative-hydrothermal activity followed by further enrichment into quartz-carbonate stockworks during regional deformation and greenschist metamorphism.Although normally thin (a few hundred metres), carbonate members in Archean volcanic terrain represent intense hydrothermal activity which could have transported and enriched gold. They should be used to locate fossil vents and structurally favourable zones where economic concentrations of gold may be found."

This paper, the 1965 Airey Memorial Lecture, reviews the world-wide technical advances in iron and steelmaking, and offers an appraisal of the new techniques which will be applied in the future. After a review of blast furnace operations, the continuous steelmaking process is described, and the resulting techniques of degassing and continuous casting are discussed at length. Pressure pouring, hot rolling, cold rolling and coating practices are also outlined, and considerable space is devoted to the direct reduction process. Finally, the application of the computer to steelmaking operations is discussed in some detail.

INTRODUCTION MY SUBJECT is one which would require several speakers and many hours of time for adequate presentation in all its many facets. Because of the widely varying market requirements and coal seams mined, the coal industry of the United States bas of necessity employed many types of preparation facilities to satisfy its needs. Predominance of Baum-type jigs, however, bas marked the mechanical cleaning installations since the early thirties, and these machines continue to hold the lead. CLEANING As a matter of record we find that, at the end of 1948, we had 480 mechanical cleaning plants in operation. Of these, 19 used air cleaners only,?400 used water washers only, . and 61 used dry and wet washers in combination . Due to the increased use of spray water underground on cutting and mechanical mining equipment, there has in recent years been a marked downward trend in dry cleaning installations. In fact, the moisture in dry-cleaned fines has been increased to such an extent by spraying that recent dry cleaning installations have incorporated thermal drying ahead of the dry cleaning units in an effort to overcome the varying and increasingly higher moisture percentages in their raw coal feeds. While on the subject of dry cleaning, it might be well to bring to your attention one of our most recent developments in this art. I refer to the McNally-Brusset vacuum jig.

Canada, with one of the largest continental shelf areas in the world, has done little to evaluate its offshore unconsolidated mineral resources which include heavy minerals (gold, chromite, rutile etc.) and industrial minerals (silica sand and aggregates). During glaciation much of the continental shelf was covered with an ice sheet and later subaerially exposed with the result that glacial, glaciomarine and fluvial processes deposited sediments that may contain heavy minerals derived from onland locations. With rising sea-levels, beach and nearshore processes may have served to concentrate heavy minerals by winnowing and removing the lighter mineral components. These potentially valuable resources can be found with suitable exploration techniques such as seismic profiling and bottom sampling. Gold deposits are known to exist off the coast of Nova Scotia, and on the basis of form er beach mining, gold deposits probably occur off Vancouver Island and the Queen Charlotte Islands. Large deposits of silica sand occur near the Madeleine Islands and it appears likely that supplies of marine aggregates are present close to urban markets or sites of future mega-projects such as oil field developments. This paper, which is based upon a review of literature and consultation with members of the Department of Energy, Mines and Resources' Coordinating Committee on Ocean Mining (DCOM), is the first step in assessing the Canadian offshore f or its resource potential with respect to quantified deposits, known and speculative mineral occurrences. Although this is a subjective evaluation, the potential appears promising. A more detailed resource inventory is required to provide a more certain assessment.

As fossil fuels become depleted over the next century, it is imperative that Canada and other countries examine ways to transition to other sources of energy, particularly renewable resources. A critical obstacle to developing Canada?s renewable energy resources is the scarcity of infrastructure to wheel the generated electricity to a viable market. For each megawatt of renewable electrical power, a maximum of 1 km of connecting power line is typically feasible. This means that hydropower, geothermal, and wind power projects with capacities up to 100 MW must be located within a maximum of 100 km of a main power line in order to be economically viable. With a total length of about 1200 km, the proposed Northern Gateway oil pipeline project creates an excellent opportunity to become a corridor that can seed renewable energy projects in Northern British Columbia and Alberta. Utility companies must build new infrastructure to provide the electricity for constructing and operating the proposed pipeline. The pipeline and linked power line infrastructure therefore, should be designed and built with consideration to create an energy highway to the significant renewable energy resources, such as hydro, wind, and geothermal, in the vicinity of the proposed pipeline. Some of the important renewable energy resources in northern British Columbia can be developed in connection with the proposed pipeline. It is estimated that close to 2,500 MW of commercially viable wind, geothermal and run-of-river power resources are present in the proximity of the proposed pipeline corridor. While oil flows westward from the Alberta bitumen fields, the generated green power can flow eastward to help the Canadian oil sand industry to offset as much as 10 Megatons of carbon emissions per year. The generated carbon credits are equivalent to 75% of the emissions associated with extraction of the 525,000 barrels per day of oil from oil sands, intended to be carried by the pipeline.

When the Hedley Mascot mill was built in 1935, it was designed as a straight flotation plant. The ore to be treated at that time was a gold ore in which the gold was intimately associated with arsenopyrite and pyrrhotite in highly silicified and garnetized limestone gangue. This material was ground to 85 per cent minus 325 mesh in two-stage grinding and floated in standard flotation cells to produce about a 5-ounce concentrate, which was shipped to Tacoma smelter for refining. This arrangement gave us a recovery of about 89 per cent. Test work indicated that the best way to improve this recovery would be to build a cyanide plant to treat our flotation middling. Arrangements for the construction of this plant were finally approved and work on it was started in the spring of 1940. This plant was of the conventional type in which the flotation middlings were thickened, filtered, and then put through the usual cyanide process. Its capacity was 50 tons of middlings per day. This arrangement worked quite satisfactorily and gave us an increase in overall recovery of 4 per cent. Unfortunately, about the time the plant was completed, we developed, and started to ship to the mill, ore that differed entirely from that met with up to that time. Instead of being hard, it was very soft, the orebody from which- it came being much faulted and brecciated. In many sections, the sulphides were oxidized and the breccia was filled in with a very soft, hydrous iron silicate known as chloropal. When this new ore was mixed with the old ore and sent to the mill, the whole operation was disrupted. The chloropal slimed so badly that the classification, flotation circuits, and cyanide plant would not handle it. The difficulty in the cyanide plant was at the head end, where the 10 ft. by 20 ft. thickener and the 8 ft. by 8ft. drum filter would not handle the middlings containing a large percentage of primary slime and chloropal. This material would not thicken to more than 30 per cent solids in the thickener and, when pumped to the filter, would forma very thin, slimy cake. Overall recovery dropped to between 83 and 84 percent and it was quite apparent that some extensive changes would have to be made in our flow-sheet before this ore could be treated successfully.

Iron deposits of every major type except laterite occur in Quebec, and form one of the major iron ore resources of the world. The five principal types of ore described are: (1) hematite-goethite masses derived from iron formation through the oxidation and enrichment of iron by natural processes; (2) taconites consisting of fine-grained iron formation; (3) metataconites composed of coarse-grained iron formation; (4) iron and titanium oxide minerals in massive or disseminateed deposits within gabbro and anorthositic rocks; and (5) replacement or contact? metasomatic magnetite deposits associated with complex silicate and skarn mineral assemblages. Most of the ore, although relatively low grade, is easy to concentrate. The physical properties of the ores that affect the choice and efficiency of beneficiation methods are described. The extent to which iron ore from this area can be utilized in the future will depend on the continued use and improvement of highly efficient methods of beneficiation.

Abstract The Poulter seismic method of geophysical exploration is an attempt to obtain an increased efficiency in the conversion of the energy of an m~pl06ion into useful energy which has directive properties and which contains a minimum of random frequency and random phase relations. Very little effort has been made in the past to simplify OT even control the uniformity of the seismic energy being introduced into the ground. The Poulter seismic method is also an attempt to improve the signal-to-noise ratio not merely by trying to complete the impartial filtering done by the earth on ,the continuous spectrum of primarily high-frequency energy radiated from a shot point but by applying a frequency control at the point of origin of the seismic wave. The energy from a shot-hole charge is peaked in a frequency which is much higher than will be transmitted through the ground, and its absorption introduces background interference. Only 10 to 20 per cent of the seismic energy of a shot-hole charge .is directed downward in a 90-degree vertical cone, whereas, from a pattern of charges detonated above the surface of the ground, 85 per cent of the seismic energy is included in a 90-degree cone and in some cases it is even confined to as small as a 30-degree cone. This greatly reduces the horizontally distributed energy, thereby producing a marked improvement in the signal-to-noise ratio. The frequency of the signal energy may be peaked in a rather narrow range by the proper application of two or more impulses upon the surface of the ground controlled as to direction, magnitude, and timing. These impulses may be controlled by the reflection shock wave technique, the pressure pulse technique, and the sequence firing technique, using the primary controls as outlined. The information obtained from the study of directivity of seismic energy in a high velocity, uniform material such as the ice on Taku glacier, in the Juneau ice field in Alaska, has been of great assistance in the application of the method to oilfield and mining problems.

AERIAL survey methods have made enormous technical advances and gained new recognition since World War II. Before enlarging on this statement and reviewing some of the uses of aerial survey in industrial development it is important to de-fine what is meant by "aerial survey". The subject will be discussed in the broadest sense and references will be made to the four sections that compose the overall field of surveying operations from the air. These are: 1. Aerial photography and photo-graphic mapping. 2. The use of airborne electronic instruments for geodetic distance measurement and the determination of ground elevations. 3. Airborne geophysical surveying. 4. The extraction of qualitative and quantitative information from aerial photographs through the processes of "reading", analysis and interpretation. "WHAT I PROPOSE TO DO is to review or report very briefly and generally on the most important subject areas of environmental concern within the mining industry and to indicate the progress being made. First, however, it seems to me both appropriate and necessary to refer to what I said in an address to the CIM Annual Western Meeting, in November 1971, in Vancouver. At that time, I tried to convey: that the awareness and alertness of this far-flung and diversified industry was sharply on the up-swing; that the knowledge of helpful technology for the abatement of pollution by water and solids was significantly increasing; that most mines were doing something about it; that many had already achieved a recycling of process water to a really significant extent; that progress was being made - though not without considerable difficulty - on the large-scale neutralization and subsequent chemical treatment of acid- and metals-bearing waters; that increasing work was being done by individual mining companies on methods for the vegetation of completed tailings impoundments; and that it had been possible to develop a meaningful estimate of the amount of money to be spent by the industry on environmental control measures during the period 1971-75 (as much as $500,- 000,000 ) . Reference was also made at that time to the constructive work in hand toward the fixation, elimination or dispersion of sulphur from smelters and to the considerable attention which was being given by the indust(y itself toward in-plant problems, e.g., dust and noise. Finally, note was taken of the fact that the inclusion of environmental control costs in the pre-operational financial provisions of new mining operations is now established practice."

Certain non-metallic minerals are used widely as fillers in the manufacture of many Canadian products. The first part of this paper deals in a general way with deposits of such minerals and their mining, with the concentration and preparation of the minerals for market, with specifications of the consumers, and with methods of control of the products to meet the specifications. The second part of the paper de-scribes talc as a specific example of mineral filler. Its production and uses in Canada and the possibility of producing higher grades of talc are discussed. Some suggestions are made for meeting the needs for mineral fillers as Canada's industry expands. RELATIVELY few people are sufficiently aware of the vast and important role that is being played in our everyday lives by mineral fillers. "In this article, with the help of the X-ray photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS), a modern test method, all the characteristics of the chlorite,and adsorption collector A6 on the surface of chlorite have been studied. There exist abundant carboxylic C-O and C=O structures in the Carbon XPS atlas with strong adhesive ability after the reaction between new collector A6 and chlorite, which indicates that the ring structure and ether-base functional groups can strengthen the reaction between collector A6 molecule and chlorite surface. The results of XPS analysis indicate that the photoelectron spectroscopy peaks of Mg2p and Al2p moved towards low energy after collector A6 absorbed on chlorite surface, which indicates that chemical bonding through electron cloud transfer happened between collector A6 and Mg, Al ions of chlorite surface. The chemical reaction promoted the adsorption of A6 on chlorite surface and eventually improved the ability of A6 to float and collect chlorite.INTRODUCTIONThere are a large amount of iron-bearing silicate minerals such as chlorite in different types of gangue minerals in iron ore from different areas besides quartz (Yingyong et al, 2012; Qiang et al, 2009). There always exist Mg2+, Al3+ Fe3+ and other metallic ions due the isomorphic replacement among the irons of this kind of minerals. The dissolution often occurs on the surface of minerals with abundant metallic ions during grinding process, and some ions are exposed on the surface, such as Mg2+, Fe3+, Al3+, Si4+, which can increase the surface electrical behaviour of iron-bearing silicate minerals (Wanzhong & Chuanyao, 2002; Yuping et al., 2007), making it easy for the surface to react preferentially with the depressants such as causticizing starch which making it impossible for the surface to reach with conventional anionic fatty acid collector (Mowla et al, 2008). Thus, the beneficiation efficiency is dramatically decreased and the improvement of concentrate grade becomes very difficult. The conventional aliphatic acid collector has some defects such as poor selectivity, poor low temperature resistance, sensitive to water hardness, etc. Thus, the addition of synergist (Liu, & Yu, 2015) or other compound reagents (Zhou et al, 2015) can promote the adsorption of reagents to mineral surface, and improve the collecting capacity and selectivity of aliphatic acid collector to minerals. The addition of polar group to nonpolar group in aliphatic acid can improve the water solubility, dispensability and hard water resistance (Tian et al, 2013). The nitrogen atoms in amid ate aliphatic acid collector can adsorb on mineral surface by itself and supply coordinate electron which can form chelating keys to improve the collecting capacity of collector. There exist coordinate electron in oxygen atoms of ether acid collector, which, along with the oxygen on carboxyl compose chelate with metal (Luo et al, 2015). There are also exist some opinions that the ether acid can arrange into similar crown ether structure which can absorb on mineral surface. A new alicyclic unsaturated ether acid compounds collector A6 is adopted in this paper, the structural formula is listed in Figure 1. The A6 has a strong collecting ability to chlorite with strong water solubility and low temperature resistance."

SAG/AG mills have been most common choice in grinding circuits last decades. In the most cases, at the discharge of SAG/AG mills, a trommel screen is used that is equipped with baffles to provide appropriate residence time and improve separation efficiency. Using baffles, with the resultant maintenance requirements could lead to decrease in mill availability. In this research, an innovation in the structure of baffles of a trommel is presented. The results show that using new baffles led to 67% decrease in SAG mill downtime due to problems of baffles and 80% decrease in fine particles on recycle conveyor.
