There is a growing demand for rare earth metals for use in high strength permanent magnets, most notably Nd2Fe14B. Rare earth metals are extremely reactive, with reduction potentials around -2.5V SHE, and are conventionally produced by molten salt electrolysis. The current work was done to investigate an earlier report of electrodeposition of a neodymium ferroalloy from aqueous solution, to determine whether this approach could be an environmentally and economically competitive commercial approach for producing feedstock for permanent magnets. Such a process would be analogous thermodynamically to the Castner- Kellner process, in which aqueous sodium chloride brine is electrolyzed in cells with mercury cathodes. Metallic sodium forms an alloy (amalgam) at the cathode, thereby lowering the activity of the metallic sodium significantly below unity and making the reduction potential of sodium significantly less negative than the standard reduction potential. Here we report the effects of Nd/Fe ratio in the electrolyte, current density, temperature and two different complexing agents, glycine and cysteine, on the composition and morphology of the electrodeposits, along with current efficiency. The energy needed to produce neodymium as Nd:Fe alloys by aqueous electrodeposition was compared with values estimated for production by molten salt electrolysis and the thermodynamic energy requirement.

"The Luilu cobalt plant at Kolwezi, Democratic Republic of Congo, has been operating since the late 1950s, using a conventional precipitation flowsheet for removal of impurities from the cobalt process stream. Most impurities are, however, incompletely removed using this technology. Copper and zinc, both of which quantitatively deposit at the cathode in the cobalt electrowinning process, are two of the main impurities contaminating the cobalt metal product. Ion exchange offers a modern approach to removing these impurities from the cobalt advance electrolyte.Following a laboratory testwork programme to identify a suitable ion-exchange system, an on-site pilot-plant trial, treating 1500 to 3000 L/d of electrolyte, was operated for a period of six weeks to optimise the operating conditions and to determine full-scale design criteria. Copper removal was carried out using a fixed-bed lead-polish configuration with the Lanxess iminodiacetic acid resin, TP 207. Zinc removal was subsequently carried out in a similar configuration using the Lanxess aminophosphonic acid resin, TP 260. The optimised system proved capable of removing both copper and zinc from 20 to 30 mg/L to <1 mg/L from plant electrolyte containing ~20 g/L Co. Selective elution allows co-loaded cobalt to be returned to the main circuit and value to be obtained for the copper impurity. The process shows operational and economic advantages over the traditional flowsheet. Full-scale implementation of the developed process is in progress and some design considerations are discussed."

The concept of a computer integrated Truck MIS includes truck dispatch, truck maintenance management and truck weighing.A truck management system is only as good as the information / data bases input to it. The concept of an integrated system works best with automated data gathering. Automated data gathering provides timely and normally, the most accurate historical information/data bases. Data bases are, however, historical, which is a problem to be overcome in a computerized truck management information system, especially in regards to a truck dispatch system as loading sites / loading conditions and some dump site conditions continually change. As these changes occur, data base s must change as well, and thus the need for the continual update of data bases that the computer uses for a Truck MIS.For a truck dispatch system to achieve reliability / viability, dispatch decisions need to revolve around real time data gathered in an automated way. Integration of all truck management function s through automated data gathering lead s to the best over-all system.An integrated system is a combination of many different factors and is only as good as each factor / building block put in the system. A lined rock cavern (LRC) is an alternative container for compressed air energy storage (CAES) to store high-pressure air that is later used to produce electricity. A critical requirement of CAES in LRCs is that the inner seal should provide adequate sealing capacity to prevent air leakage from LRCs. In many studies, rubber sheets are applied to build the inner seal. However, air leakage through rubber seals has not been given much attention and rubber seals are usually assumed to be absolutely airtight. Given that rubber is permeable especially under high air pressure, such as in CAES, air therefore leaks through rubber seals during CAES operations. In this study, a numerical analysis was conducted based on the permeation equation of polymers and the governing equations of thermodynamics of CAES caverns to analyze the characteristics of air leakage from CAES caverns through rubber seals. A planned CAES plant in China was considered as a case study. Results show that air leakage rate increases with increasing cavern temperature and pressure during air injection and decreases as cavern temperature and pressure decline during air withdrawal. However, in total, the daily air leakage percentage is in the order of magnitude of 10-3% in a typical operation cycle, which is much smaller than the critical value of 1%. Under a common range of realistic operations conditions, the daily air leakage percentage is still of the order of 10-3%. Therefore, rubber seals can be used to prevent air leakage in LRCs for CAES. However, the experience of Japanese pilot cavern indicates that the specifications for the on-site vulcanization jointing and installation methods of rubber seals still need improvement.

ABSTRACT: Rock bolts are the main form of defence against rock falls in mines. Conditions under-ground are conducive to corrosion. A perception exists about American coal mines that bolt corrosion is not an issue, especially when bolts are fully grouted. This perception is not necessarily accurate due to the formation of micro-cracks as the resin sets and to subsequent rock movement that breaks the resin column’s continuity. Corrosion should be considered when designing rock bolt support in long-term excavations. This paper explores the problem of corrosion, outlines a method to determine the corrosion potential of bolts, and suggests ways to mitigate such effects.

Fatigue failure and accompanying brittle failure occurs frequently in heavy mining equipment. This paper discusses how fracture mechanics can be applied as a tool for crack control and crack management. Information is provided to determine if particular components are prone to brittle failure. By using existing fracture mechanics formulae, an estimation of the critical crack size can then be made. It is explained that for a successful application of fracture mechanics, both the actual engineering stress in the component and the mechanical properties of the applied material must be known. The importance of toughness at low temperatures is quantitatively illustrated by calculating critical crack sizes at room temperature and at below-zero temperatures. Understanding the possibilities of fracture mechanics will also produce a climate in which the purchaser of equipment can more precisely analyze the relative quality of components with respect to crack tolerance and failure prevention. In this manner, communication between the user and manufacturer of equipment may also become more precise and effective, leading to improved design.

ABSTRACT: The chicken and egg scenario — where adverse truck motions cause ground deterioration and poor ground profiles cause adverse truck motions — is a downward deterioration spiral dominating our industry. If we remove one action, the reaction stops. A simple truck to excavator load data analysis and wireless communication system is outlined, which will provide visual assistance to the excavator operator in achieving improved load placement and balance in a truck body. This will reduce subsequent hauler duty cycle adverse motions and g levels that contribute to structural fatigue, higher tkph, reduced tire life, and ongoing maintenance of haul roads.

"Abstract -Biotite from aplite that appears to have crystallized simultaneously with disseminated Cu-Mo mineralization at MacLeod Lake in northern Quebec yields K-Ar dates in the range 2032 ± 44 Ma to &apos;2f1:)1 ± 47 Ma. The mean value, 2065 Ma, is some 400 Ma younger than the 2485 ± 64 Ma date obtained from a hornblende concentrate separated from a granodiorite sill that is spatially, but apparently not genetically, associated with the disseminated Cu-Mo deposit. The mean biotite date of 2065 Ma at MacLeod Lake, a K-Ar date of 2055 Ma reported from an area 50 km east of MacLeod Lake and published dates of about 2000 Ma for galenas from the Chibougamau Cu-Au ores, suggest a widespread thermal and mineralization event, in that part of the Superior Province east of James Bay, that differs from the common late Archean mineralization that is related to volcanism and metamorphic-intrusive activity.Sommaire - Les datations au K-Ar sur des biotites qui auraient cristallisé en même temps que la minéralisation disséminée en Cu et Mo dans une aplite mise en place au Lac MacLeod, au nord du Québec, s&apos;échalonnent entre 2032 ± 44 Ma et &apos;2f1:)1 ± 47 Ma. "A planned production increase of 1.25 million tonnes per year at Domtar&apos;s salt mine in Goderich, Ontario required an increase in the underground mine ventilation system from 320,000 to 700,000 scfm, The design of the expanded facility included the addition of a 22-foot-diameter shaft to augment the existing production and service shafts.A preliminary review of the ventilation requirement s indicated that in order to pr ovide good economic design for the expanded system, a comprehensive ventilation survey of the existing system was required. The survey was completed in the latter part of 1980, and subsequent engineering design and equipment selection proceeded throughout 1981.This paper presents the methods used to carry out the survey. Particular attention is given to the numerous challenges presented in determining air flows in the large 45-ftwide by 43-ft-high airways. Emphasis is placed on practical field survey techniques.A mathematical model of the ventilation system using a computer program is described, and the application of this program to provide design data and assist in equipment selection is discussed. The preparation of high-purity zirconyl compounds was studied in order to develop an economical process for obtaining pure zirconium via the caustic fritting of zircon sand. The direct dissolution of caustic frits with concentrated hydrochloric or nitric acid at 80c. followed by the addition of a small amount of acidified gelatin, gave high-purity zirconyl chloride or nitrate. The addition of a small amount of gelatin caused a mutual flocculation between colloidal silica and gelatin. The precipitation of this silica floc markedly lowered the content of silica in the product. The silica content of the compounds (or solution) so produced, generally less than 100 ppm., was sufficiently low for tributyl phosphate extraction for nitrate solutions. It was found that the degree of purification de-pends not only on the procedures employed but also on the nature of the frit itself. Silica was more effectively eliminated from the fritted product produced at higher temperatures, and less silica was present in the com-pound prepared from the frit produced in a shorter heating time. The gold deposit of the Lapa mine has a complex mineralogical gold state with coarse and fine native gold, aurostibite and submicroscopic gold within arsenopyrite. A specific mineralogical characterization of the refractory fraction was conducted combining various techniques such as optical microscopy, electron microscopy, electron microprobe and secondary ion mass spectrometry. In parallel, the mineral processing behaviour and the recovery of the refractory gold were studied by pressure oxidation and cyanide leaching. This paper presents the mineralogical methodology developed to characterize the refractory gold distribution within arsenopyrite. These results are presented and interpreted in order to plot gold recovery versus sulphide oxidation. The comparison of the metallurgical behaviour yields predicted from the mineralogical data and the one calculated from leaching tests shows a good agreement and allows mineralogical explanations of the gold metallurgical behaviour.

"The extremely low permeability of the water-carrying beds in the nevonian formation of the potash district of Saskatchewan does not permit the injection of cement or chemicals to seal off sufficient water from the shafts to guarantee the safety of the mine. Based on many years of experience with wet shafts in the German and French potash mining industry, Alwinsal Potash of Canada Ltd. decided to have their potash mine shaft near Lanigan, Sask., which was completed in September of 1967, lined by means of an absolutely watertight lining of combined concrete and steel-plate construction.This shaft lining, consisting of two steel shells of welded construction with concrete filled in between, has proved itself before in the German coal mining industry. It guarantees a permanently dry shaft. With this type of lining, time-robbing and very often abortive injections are superfluous and the regular repair and adjusting work as well as the corrosion of conveyances and ropes can be avoided. Above all, however, the danger of a water inrush into the shaft is abolished completely."

Many factors affect the forge ability of steels. One of the major factors is chemical composition.' This article discusses the individual effects of alloying elements and the effect of the resultant modification of microstructure onforgeability. INTRODUCTION T HE use of alloy steels is expanding considerably and the fabrication procedures for such alloys are becoming more complex. An attempt is made in this article to describe the effect of alloying elements on the hot-workability of steels. Most of the data reported here are taken from the studies of Ihrig, Clark and others (Refs. 1-4). Chemical composition is not the only controlling factor. Grain size and surface condition of the material, forging temperature, and speed of deformation are also important. Certain conclusions can be drawn regarding the effect of various alloying elements on the hot-work-ability of forging stock. The results of hot-twist tests are considered useful in this connection as the number of twists to failure has been taken as the level of forgeability at a particular temperature. "Dialkyl dithiophosphinates are a unique class of collectors used in the flotation processing of Cu- Au, complex polymetallic, and precious metal ores. They are known to exhibit higher selectivity and flotation rates for Cu sulfides, galena, and precious metal values in the presence of other gangue sulfides, than the traditionally used collectors such as dialkyl dithiophosphates and xanthates. They also have an attractive HSE profile. Historically, for most reagents used in flotation, practical methods of chemical usage have preceded detailed scientific understanding of how they work; this applies also to dithiophosphinates. Recently, however, the research community has shown significant interest in this chemistry, and numerous studies have been conducted to understand the fundamentals of interactions of dithiophosphinates with several base metal sulfides and precious metals. A critical overview of fundamental studies, laboratory ore flotation, and plant practice of dithiophosphinates is given in this paper. The findings from these studies are rationalized by drawing on concepts and insights from coordination chemistry. A comparison between the interactions of dithiophosphinates and dithiophosphate analogues with various minerals and metals is also made throughout. We believe that such a critical analysis/overview will be invaluable in identifying gaps in knowledge regarding this important set of compounds, which in turn may provide a basis for the design of studies that can advance understanding of their flotation performance. INTRODUCTIONDialkyl dithiophosphinates are an important member of the class of thiophosphorus compounds that are widely used in flotation beneficiation of base metal sulfide and precious metals ores. Ore flotation studies and plant practice experience have demonstrated their unique properties compared to the traditionally used sulfide collectors such as dialkyl dithiophosphates (their closest analogues) and xanthates. The predominant dialkyl dithiophosphinate used in the industry today is sodium diisobutyl dithiophosphinate (a.k.a. DIBDTPi; AEROPHINE® 3418A1 introduced by American Cyanamid in the late 1970s; Figure 1). The widest application of AEROPHINE 3418A is found in complex polymetallic ores of Cu-Pb-Zn-Ag, Pb-Zn-Ag, and Cu-Zn where it has demonstrated improved recoveries (and flotation rates) of sulfide minerals of Cu, Pb and Ag and selectivity against sphalerite, iron sulfides, and penalty elements (Mingione, 1991). More recently, it has also been used as a collector in the processing of Cu, Cu-Ni, and Ni ores (Guitard et al., 2015) and Cu-Au ores (Dunne, 2005). In general, it is considered to possess the collecting power of xanthates together with the selectivity (against pyrite) of dithiophosphates (Hope et al., 2003a, 2003b), while requiring lower dosages than those reagents (Guitard et al., 2015). AEROPHINE® 3418A has also found an important place in several targeted formulations to improve flotation performance. Other benefits of this reagent include higher flotation rates, having a better HSE (health, safety and environmental) profile2 compared to xanthate, and exhibiting resistance to hydrolysis and oxidation (Guitard et al., 2015). Compared to diisobutyl dithiophosphate (DIBDTP), which is known to contribute significantly to frothing (often leading to over-frothing), AEROPHINE® 3418A is observed to be froth neutral (i.e. it does not alter the existing froth characteristics). As is the case for other flotation reagents, the design and application of AEROPHINE® 3418A has preceded understanding of its behavior at a fundamental level. "Real time analysis of conveyed bulk materials can be used to improve process performance by reducing variability and upgrading ore quality through selective removal of increments of flow that do not meet appropriate selection criteria. This paper focusses on proven Prompt Gamma Neutron Activation Analysis (PGNAA) and microwave transmission technologies used to representatively measure conveyed ore quality in real time so that meaningful decisions can be made between the mine and mill. This enables the effective removal by bulk diversion of small increments of conveyed flow such as waste, highly deleterious material or sub-economic material from the mill feed. Improved ore quality in plant feed optimises process performance, reduces processing costs and minimises tailings generation. Analysis is unaffected by particle size, dust, layering or segregation, mineralogy and belt speed. Technologies are explained and performance examples given from installations in copper and iron ore. The technology has been used successfully in bulk sorting for over twenty years typically using measured increments of a few minutes. Improvements in technology and calibration performance have resulted in accurate measurements over increments of thirty seconds and below.INTRODUCTION Ore quality variability exists on a number of scales. Block model grades represent a few hundred to many thousands of tonnes. Grade control at the mine occurs on a scale typically down to the size of a haul truck, which may be a few hundred tonnes. Highly variable ore quality is detrimental to process efficiency and effectiveness. Processing waste or low grade ore when higher quality feed is available represents a lost opportunity to generate higher revenues earlier in the operational life. Measuring ore quality accurately over short time increments during conveying enables small increments to be measured and diverted according to their quality. The paper explains the technology and benefits. Neutron irradiation techniques were considered potentially suitable for conveyed bauxite measurement by Beurton et al, 1995. Tran & Evans (2001) concluded there was no equivalent technology to Prompt Gamma Neutron Activation Analysis (PGNAA) in terms of material penetration power. PGNAA was evaluated by Nelson & Riddle (2003) for possible use in the phosphate industry and recommended its use for further characterisation of the mine’s various ore types to improve stockpile allocation and grade control. Cottle (2007) discussed test work for an iron sinter application and Delwig et al (2011) described the successful installation in 2009 and performance of PGNAA for base-to-acid ratio control in sinter feed with the analyser output used to control lime addition. Geoscan (PGNAA) works very well on iron ore and can “improve control over what is happening in the plant” and that comfort can be provided in knowing that the product is on-spec according to Minnett (2010). PGNAA is not yet used in the minerals sector for tariff purposes as has occurred since 2000 with Coalscan (PGNAA) in coal (Minnett, 2010)."

"Approximately 2.0 million tonnes of phosphate rock is imported from the U.S. to Alberta annually and is used in the production of agricultural fertilizers. No phosphate rock is presently mined in Canada, although sources of igneous phosphate have been mined in the past. Sedimentary phosphate rock is found in nine geological units within the Cordilleran Foothills and Front Ranges region of Alberta. The Devonian-Mississippian Exshaw Formation, Permo-Pennsylvanian Rocky Mountain Supergroup, and the Jurassic Fernie Formation have the best potential f or future development. Most of the phosphate rock in Alberta is of low grade and lies within restricted land use areas. The best over-all resource potential lies in the Fernie basin area of southeastern British Columbia, in the Fernie Formation. The possibility of deep phosphate rock deposits in the plains region should be examined.Phosphate rock is mined in Idaho, Utah, Montana and Florida, and is shipped to Canadian fertilizer plants for processing. Raw phosphate rock is acidified, usually with sulphuric acid, by a wet process. Varying amounts of ammonia are added, and the fertilizer is pelletized. Future research, in western Canada, is needed in the beneficiating of low-grade ores and in the area of in situ mining. At the present time, phosphate rock sells for around US$50Itonne, and Alberta fertilizer companies probably pay in the range of C$7D-$85Itonne for U.S. phosphate rock delivered to the plant. Environmental concerns about phosphate rock processing are centred around gypsum tailing ponds, and radioactive wastes.U.S. supplies of phosphate rock are secure until the year 2000; however, by this time, the richer deposits in the U.S. may be exhausted. Alternate deposits, such as the ones in Alberta and British Columbia, might then be considered. Phosphate byproducts, such as uranium, vanadium, fluorine and rare earth elements, may help in making the processing of low-grade Canadian phosphates economically feasible."

The last three decades have seen significant mining development in northern regions of Canada, where the freeze and thaw cycle of permafrost and the corresponding surface subsidence and heave represent a significant challenge to the design and maintenance of infrastructures. Identifying areas at risk is of great assistance to reduce the impact of this issue. Over the past ten years, Synthetic Aperture Radar Interferometry (InSAR) has been widely used to monitor ground surface deformation. With this technique, changes in phase between two SAR acquisitions are used to detect centimeter to millimeter surface displacements over a large area and with high spatial resolution. InSAR can be used as a tool to assist the siting and design of new infrastructure as well as highlighting the risk to existing structures in areas of unstable terrain. This paper presents the results of a project carried out by Effigis, which made use of SAR interferometry in the context of monitoring terrain and infrastructure stability in a northern mining environment that is affected by permafrost seasonal and long term changes. TerraSAR-X images acquired during two periods, August to November 2012 and March to October 2013, were used to measure the deformations and/or movement of ground surface, infrastructure and stockpiles caused by seasonal changes in permafrost extent in and around a mining site located in Nunavik, Quebec. The results showed that spatial and temporal distributions of surface displacements are in accordance with scientific and terrain knowledge. Some displacements were observed in loose soil areas while, as expected, none were detected in bedrock and rock outcrop areas. The areas most affected by active layer changes showed surface subsidence in the thaw settlement period. This study confirms that SAR interferometry has a great potential for operational applications related to risks induced by surface deformation in mining environments. It shows that this technique can be used to produce reliable maps of surface movement and monitor the vertical displacement of important infrastructure.
