Copper mining and smelting has been carried out in Japan for over 13 centuries and in fact stretching back into antiquity. In 1889, the first electrolytic copper refinery in Japan based on Elkington’s principles was started by Furukawa Mining at Honjyo in downtown Tokyo based on the multiple or parallel system. Within two decades, a number of other copper refineries had begun operation. Interestingly, but perhaps not surprising given Japan’s long history of copper production, this first refinery in Japan commenced just ten years after the first refinery in the USA (1879), and not long after the first plants in Europe. By 1935, as a result of growth in copper demand, there were six domestic copper electro-refineries in Japan with an installed capacity of 97,800 tonnes/a, while actual production was 71,200 tonnes/a. Since about 1932, the majority of these plants were based on the more common parallel or multiple system. In 1946, just after World War II, domestic production capacity had dropped considerably to 29,000 tonnes/a, however with reconstruction, capacity and production expanded rapidly, with production reaching 81,000 tonnes/a in 1955, 187,000 tonnes/a in 1960 and 307,000 tonnes/a in 1965. The introduction of the first refinery and the early ones that followed and subsequent developments are discussed in this paper. The major technical achievements during the high growth period from 1945 to 1963 included: the use of fire- refined anodes; the introduction of newly-developed rectifiers; the introduction of lead-lined or vinyl-lined concrete cells; improvements in the electrolyte heating system; application of improved anti-corrosion materials and the introduction of heat-insulating surface coverings. In 2018, Japan’s refined copper production totaled 1,595,000 tonnes of copper, with Japan ranking third in the world after China and Chile. There are now eight copper refineries in Japan which provide Japan’s production of refined copper. These plants are listed in Table 1 (Wood Mackenzie, 2019), also showing the production trend since 2013; in general, production over this period has been relatively steady. The Toyo plant is now the 7th largest copper refinery in the world after several large plants as rated by capacity in China, Russia and India (ICSG, 2019).

Introduction In this paper it is proposed to review the history of petroleum geology in western Canada, to discuss some of the main events which have affected its progress, to mention its relationship to the petroleum industry, and, finally, to appraise its present status and possible future importance. It will be useful first to consider the meanings of the terms petroleum geology, petroleum geologist, and the petroleum geology of a terrain. Petroleum Geology. - In simplest terms, geology is the science of the earth. Hence petroleum geology is the science of that portion of the earth that encloses pools of petroleum. The systematic delineation and study of stratigraphic geology began about 1820. The systematic development and study of petroleum geology started about 1910. It is a relatively immature branch of geology. Petroleum Geologist. - This term may be applied to a fully qualified geologist who is engaged for a time, be it a job, a contract, or a lifetime, in the work of finding and developing deposits of petroleum and related substances. No man may properly be called a petroleum geologist who is not first a fully qualified geologist.

Many of us are familiar with the history of oil in the Province of Ontario, but for the benefit of those who have never heard the story I will repeat it. In 185 7 J. H. Williams, of Hamilton, an old-country Scotchman, who had the advantage of experience gained from the primitive methods used for refining the oil collected at seepages in Roumania, heard of the "gum beds" along Black creek in Enniskillen township, Lambton county. He erected a small plant in the bush and refined illuminating oil, where the village of Old Springs now stands. The labor of collecting this thick ?gummy substance from the sluggish water of the creek, prompted him to dig a well, the next year ( 1858), in the hope of obtaining a greater quantity. When his excavation reached a gravel bed on top of the rock, oil, resembling "lubricating oil of commerce", rose several feet. Several of these wells were dug and his refining business flourished. The following year the Drake well, in Pennsylvania, was drilled into rock, resulting in an oil find which encouraged one James Shaw to make a similar attempt on Black creek. With a spring-pole drill he completed his well in the spring of 1861 to a depth of 160 feet, and at that depth struck a gusher that flowed uncontrolled for several days. Great excitement followed and the village of Oil Springs had a mushroom growth. The Petrolia field was discovered in 1865. Lick followed up the Thames with a spring-pole rig testing the formations along that river and discovered the original Bothwell field in 1865. During the sixties wells were drilled in many counties in southwestern Ontario.

"IntroductionTWO METHODS of mucking have been used in sinking C shaft, the five-compartment production shaft of the Yellowknife property of Giant Yellowknife Gold Mines, Limited:(a) Band mucking during the original sinking in 1949 and 1950 (l); and(b) Mechanical mucking with the Cryderman shaft mucker during the recent deepening in 1954.This paper briefly describes the recent deepening and compares the performance figures of the two sinking operations.PlanningProduction planning in 1952 showed that it would be advisable to deepen C shaft in 1954 to provide for three new production levels and the installation of an underground crusher. To complete the required shaft work it would be necessary for a shaft crew to deepen the shaft about 500 feet, to partly excavate three level stations and a crusher station, and to cut a station for the loading pocket. Figure 1, a vertical section of the lower part of the shaft, shows the details of the deepening programme.During the planning period, Giant had a rather small supervisory staff and at the same time was experiencing a heavy labour turnover. As it was obvious that production would suffer if the sinking crew were recruited at the mine, it was decided that the merits of contracting-the shaft sinking to an independent contractor should be investigated."

Reagents form a crucial part of flotation process as they have the power to control the surface properties of minerals. In case of coal flotation, collectors and frothers are two the important and commonly used reagents. But other types of reagents such as promoters, modifiers and depressants are also finding wide applications because of their availability to improve selectivity and increase recovery. Because of these chemicals the scenario has changed from flotation being used mostly for high rank hydrophobic coals to low rank, oxidised or inferior coals. In the present work a case is presented in which two non-ionic surfactants (abbreviated as A & B) known to act as emulsifier have been studied to get a better flotation performance for a preparation plant with varying feed characteristics. Laboratory flotation tests were conducted with both the surfactants using three feed samples of the plant by varying the dosage at three different levels. The highest combustible matter recovery (more than 80%) was obtained for surfactant B at a dosage of 75 ppm (parts per million) for feed 1. But at the same dosage the recovery decreased by 21% and 10.2 % respectively for feed 2 and 3. On the other hand surfactant A showed a consistent result for all the three feed samples giving the highest value at a dosage of 50 ppm followed by a decrease beyond this point. The tests were complemented by contact angle measurements that demonstrated the same trend. In addition to this the reproducibility of data for Surfactant A was checked and found that the standard deviations for both separation efficiency and combustible matter recovery were within the permissible range (less than 5%). Finally an in-plant process optimization study to evaluate the performance and applicability of surfactant A at industrial level was done and has been discussed.

"Abstract - A horizontal mineralogical-geochemical ore zonation with a southeast to northwest trending succession of Cu and Fe (Zn) main zones has been discovered in the Logatchev hydrothermal field (14°45??N Mid-Atlantic Ridge). The major minerals are pyrite, chalcopyrite, bornite, isocubanite, digenite and chalcocite. Zn-sulfide, marcasite and covellite are less abundant. Rare minerals are native copper, zincian copper and cobalt pentlandite (first found in oceanic massive sulfides), Cu and Cu-Co-bearing Fe-disulfides. Two groups of the main sulfide assemblages with different copper contents are recognized: Group I comprises assemblages with primary sulfides (isocubanite, chalcopyrite, pyrite and Zn-sulfide; Cu up to 35 wt% in Cu-bearing minerals); Group II contains assemblages with secondary Cu-rich sulfides (bornite, digenite, chalcocite; Cu ~60 wt%) as well as rare minerals (cobalt pentlandite, native copper and zincian copper). The assemblages of Group I formed at a temperature of about 300°C; the sulfur fugacity (log fs2 atm) at 300°C is probably 9.9. Relations between minerals of this group are contradictory, attributed to non-equilibrium environments, and no unified sequence of crystallization of minerals has been determined. Minerals of Group II replace, rim or cross the assemblages of Group I. Group II minerals crystallized in a distinct sequence (cobalt pentlandite-bornite-digenite- chalcocite-native copper), with increasing copper content from the start to the end of the depositional sequence. This may correspond to pH from 7 to 8 near Eh = -0.2 at 250°C. Minerals of this group were generally formed under hypergene alteration processes. Compositions of ore minerals were studied by means of electron microprobe analysis (EMPA) (150 analyses). Narrow composition fields were revealed in all main sulfides, which comprised known experimental data. ZnS contains 6.0 to 28.0 mol.% FeS, which is close to data known for other hydrothermal massive sulfides from the Mid-Atlantic Ridge (MAR). A common admixture in ZnS is Cu (0.16 to 1.32 wt%). Rare grains of unusual anisotropic Fe-disulfides, (Fe0.95Cu0.05)S2 and Cu(Fe,Co)9S20, were found among the ore minerals."

Inter formational sliding of bedding planes between two different rock types in Badong formation is an important reason that leads to the instability and fracture of rock mass in this stratum. There are no specific research achievements on bedding planes between two different rock types in Badong formation. In order to study the shear mechanical properties of bedding planes between two different rock types. This paper using the software of particle flow code (PFC) and JRC model to establish several typical structures of different roughness coefficient of surface morphology based on the laboratory tests on silty mudstone and marlite in Badong formation. A great deal of numerical shear tests were carried out by ball production, radius expansion and servo infliction. The research results are as follows: First, shear strength of Badong formation is found to vary between that of silty mudstone and marlite isotropic planes by analyzing shear strength of the homogenous bedding planes and inhomogeneous rock types, we can find that the shearing strength in Badong formation is between silty mudstone and marlite isotropic planes and which is closer to the shearing strength of silty mudstone isotropic planes. Second, the basical friction angle of bedding planes between two different rock types in Badong formation is between silty mudstone and marlite isotropic planes and which is closer to the basical friction angle of silty mudstone between isotropic planes. Third, based on the experimental results, an expression is obtained to describe the relationship of the ratio of shearing strength between bedding planes of two different rock types and isotropic planes in soft rock, the rock combination coefficient, and the roughness coefficient. This study has important significance for further research on the shear mechanical properties of bedding planes between two different rock types.

"The Minto-Chipman Strip Mining Reclamation Project was initiated to re-vegetate the spoil piles remaining from strip mining operations.All available information was studied by the team responsible, and areas being reclaimed in the U. S. were visited, Methods applicable to the N. B. Project were noted for future use.We have both surface and underground mining operations in New Brunswick, Both deface the natural landscape and reclamation varies in difficulty, Surface operation disturbances are the most difficult to correct.Some of the surface mining is carried out next to two main highways and the results are definite eyesores, With this in mind, it was decided to landscape the spoil ground next to the highways and plant “as is"" the ground remote from the public view.The landscaping entailed various degrees of bulldozing from complete levelling to contouring, smoothing and topping, Bulldozing is, of course, the most expensive part of any reclamation project.There are two phases to the planting program; experimental and operational--experimental both prior and, later, in conjunction with the operational planting.Initially in the experimental project, the pH and composition of the spoil was determined using a grid sampling system. "Magnetic fields affect the growth of cultured cells and plants; however, limited information exists about their effects on vegetation performing environmental remediation. Constructed wetland mesocosms treating hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) wastewater exposed to low-intensity magnetic fields (60 Hz, 56.5 × 10-6 Tesla) produced 100% more biomass than the unexposed control. Nonetheless, they removed only 43 ± 27% of Cr(VI), compared to 60 ± 21% for the control. A Cr(VI) reduction expression was developed as a function of the magnetic field. The design and operation of constructed wetlands to treat mining wastewater can be corrected for magnetic field effects.RÉSUMÉ Les champs magnétiques affectent la croissance des cellules et des plantes cultivées; toutefois, il existe peu d’information quant à leurs effets sur la végétation utilisée à des fins d’assainissement environnementale. ABSTRACT Pressure oxidation tests have been conducted by Sherritt for a refractory gold-silver project in China. The feed contained 39 g/t Au and 970 g/t Ag; the major gold-bearing minerals were pyrite and arsenopyrite. Because the feed contained a significant amount of silver, which can be refractory to cyanide leaching after pressure oxidation due to the formation of argentojarosite, the test program included investigation of methods to enhance silver recovery. The “lime boil” process proved successful and was incorporated into the flowsheet. Gold extraction from the lime boil product solids was 95–98%; silver extraction was up to 94%.

ABSTRACT The sensitivity of sulphide minerals towards oxidation depends on the mineralogical makeup and nature of sulphide ores. This paper focuses on chalcopyrite behaviour in a nickel-copper sulphide- ore matrix that was aged in the mine-site stockpiles. Results of collectorless, collector-induced flotation and recovery by size are presented following a discussion of XPS analysis that was used to gain insight into oxidative alteration of chalcopyrite’s surface chemistry. Chalcopyrite maintains its high flotation activity despite exposure to weeks of oxidative conditions. It is concluded that chalcopyrite is quite tolerant to stockpile oxidation due to various factors related to alteration of its surface chemistry.

"Newmont’s Mike prospect, currently undeveloped, is a blind Cu-Au(-Zn) deposit on the Carlin Trend, containing >8.5 M oz. Au, 1027 M lbs. Cu, and 809 M lbs. Zn as Carlin-type gold and polymetallic Cu-Zn minerals in Paleozoic lower-plate carbonates and shales. This project was undertaken 1) to examine the effectiveness of different lixiviants for leaching the Mike supergene Cu-Au ores via bottle roll tests, and 2) to determine what ore minerals resist dissolution in each leaching agent by comparing the mineralogy and chemistry of head and tail samples. Sulfuric and sulfurous acids were used to leach copper and cyanide was used to leach gold. Thiourea, glycine, and other lixiviants were used to leach both base metals and precious metal. QEMSCAN and SEM study of six samples of different ore types and grades indicate that the Au occurs as varieties of native gold, including auricupride and electrum. Major Cu minerals are native Cu, cuprite, malachite, chrysocolla, and conichalcite (Ca-Cu arsenate), with locally significant Cu in jarosite and goethite. Gangue mineralogy is dominated by quartz, sericite, chlorite, alunite, smectite and kaolinite, K-feldspar, and iron oxides (sensu lato). Results of bottle roll tests and leach residue mineralogy will be presented and discussed at the conference.INTRODUCTION Resource and Geologic Setting The Mike deposit is a large, blind Cu-Au(-Zn) deposit in the Maggie Creek district of the Carlin Trend of Nevada, USA, near the Gold Quarry mine (Figure 1). In this paper, the argument is put forth that the codes used for public reporting of mineral resources and mineral reserves have some significant limitations with regard to the information provided to investors on the short- to medium-term value of mining properties. Such limitations include a) failure to explicitly incorporate a time element and b) failure to state explicitly the quantity and quality of mineral product that will be produced for sale. A time-value framework for reporting mineral assets is proposed in order to overcome these limitations. The proposed system is based on two classification axes: a) an X-axis representing time in years during which the value of the asset is likely to be realized and b) a Y-axis representing the value identified by a mining or exploration company\u2019s activities. The potential benefits of this system are discussed, including the ability to incorporate factors, such as permitting and construction times, directly into the magnitude of the reported mineral assets. The proposed framework would assist in the standardization of mineral assets reporting in such a manner that they could eventually be more readily included in financial statements. "The successful marketing of Alberta coals will increasingly depend, to a large degree, on an extensive coal quality information base. This information, at present, is generally based on a deliverable, cleaned coaland is confined to existing mine sites. Coal quality information is not as well understood for raw in situ coal outside of mine sites and even less is known about the geological factors that control it.If new uses and markets for Alberta coal are to be developed, such as gasification, coprocessing, and exploiting high rank coals for combustion, it will be imperative that the coal quality parameters important for these utilizations be known. These parameters need to be known for existing deliverable coals and, just as important, for as yet unexploited in situ coal. Factors such as the Cl, No, K, Co, P and trace element contents should be addressed to meet the requirements of these new utilizations.The geological characterization and explanation of what factors control these coal quality parameters is part of research being done at the Alberta Geological Survey. In-seam vertical profiling has been undertaken within the plains and foothills/mountains coals to determine exactly where coal quality variations occur and why. In the Ardley coal zone at the Highvale Mine it has been found, for example, that the ash content of the mined coal is made up of discrete partings and of microsized particles associated with inertinite macerals. The in-seam characterization of coal seams will lead to a better understanding of in situ coal quality variations, leading to new uses and markets for Alberta coal."

"Copper electrodeposition from synthetic and authentic acid mine drainage (AMD) is inhibited by ferric iron (Fe(III)), through re-oxidation of copper. Polarization to –2.5 V versus standard hydrogen electrode prevents the dissolution of predeposited copper from the cathode. Above pH 1, copper deposition is independent of Fe(III) concentration to approximately 25 g/L. Fe(III) is reduced to ferrous iron (Fe(II)), with a high combined current efficiency for iron and copper reduction. In a divided cell, the conversion of Fe(III) to Fe(II) is almost quantitative, with efficient transfer of acidity from catholyte to anolyte. Prospects for developing electrochemical technology for complete remediation of AMD are discussed.RÉSUMÉ En raison de la réoxydation du cuivre, le fer ferrique (Fe(III)) nuit à l’électrodéposition du cuivre à partir de drainage minier acide (DMA) véritable et synthétique. "In 1958, the Ontario Department of Mines appointed a committee to study the accident situation and mining methods used in the uranium mines in the E1liot Lake district. This committee reviewed the existing knowledge on mine design, pillar support and roof spans and came to the conclusion that scientific knowledge had not yet reached the stage of producing rational design procedures which would reduce the dependence on trial-and-error methods. Since that time, the Mining Research Centre has made numerous stress measurements in two mines to define the pre-mining and pillar stresses. A comprehensive series of tests has been done in the laboratory to measure the compressive strength of the rock; a geological survey of the region has been made to evaluate tectonic stresses; and a survey was done on mining conditions with regard to stable and unstable pillar configurations. This information has been used to evaluate pillar design as effected by pillar width and height, depth below surface, extraction and pre-mining stress fields. The resultant design of pillar widths and corresponding extraction as the depth increased is in line with past and present experience in these mines. The information available on roof stability is still insufficient to design stable stope spans with the same degree of confidence; experience and trial-and-error methods are still required."

Since the late Dr. Keith Brimacombe, et al, performed tests at the now-closed Asarco Tacoma smelter and the Inco Copper Cliff Smelter on Peirce-Smith copper converters almost thirty years ago, many Pyro-metallurgists have investigated using the technology. To the best of the authors knowledge, except for shrouded tuyere technologies using substantial oxygen enrichments, the core idea of using high pressure air injection has not been implemented anywhere in the world. This paper reviews the fundamentals of this technology and summarizes the basic economic considerations. It also presents the circumstances of where and when high-pressure injection might be justified.

Construction and mining worksites pose unique challenges to workers and equipment operators due to their dynamic and unstructured nature. Narrow haul roads, crowded work spaces and presence of workers and equipment in close proximity, combined with large blind spots and overall poor visibility afforded to operators lead to collisions and run-over-type accidents between equipment, workers, and other entities that may be present on the jobsite. Operations that involve machine-infrastructure interaction, particularly in the case of concealed infrastructure such as excavation and drilling lead to unintended strikes between the equipment?s end-effect or and the infrastructure. Such accident-prone scenarios can be avoided by providing operators with real-time feedback and warnings using 3D visualization and proximity monitoring of the entities present in the equipment?s vicinity. Thus the jobsite in the real world is abstracted and represented in a 3D virtual world. However, this requires the ability to create a seamless link between real-world sensors present on the equipment and/or the jobsite and the virtual environment. This paper describes a non-restrictive acquisition allocation framework that allows position and orientation sensor streams from construction and mining job sites to be used for updating 3D virtual scenes in real-time for providing vital collision avoidance warnings to equipment operators.
