Corus Umuiden, formerly Hoogovens, was the first steel plant in Europe after Voest to introduce oxygen steelmaking. In the decision-making process contacts with Dofasco in Canada about the production of formability steel grades were crucial. In developing oxygen (LD-) steelmaking high liquid steel output rates had to be combined with accurate process control. For ingot casting static models with input control and sampling during interrupted blowing were sufficient to deliver liquid steel within the required carbon, phosphorus, sulphur and temperature windows. Computers were introduced to perform the complicated charge calculations. Continuous casting called for strict control of composition and temperature at process end point and made predictable timing crucial. Dynamic control was introduced based upon sub lance measurements and waste gas analysis. Reliable disposable measurement sensors were developed in a concerted international action. Dissolved oxygen at blow end deteriorated the quality of low carbon aluminium killed steel grades. Blowing gases through the converter bottom improved process kinetics, resulting in lower carbon-oxygen products, yield increase and better phosphorus removal and generated new families of hybrid blowing processes. Introduction of secondary metallurgy facilities such as argon stirring stations, vacuum degassers and ladle furnaces relieved the demands for strict BOF end point control. Desulphurisation of hot metal became standard practice. In regions with scrap shortage hot metal desiliconisation followed by dephosphorisation, was introduced in the blast furnace cast house and hot metal transfer ladles. Later redundant converter vessels were used for pre-treatment, resulting in a two-stage process. The fundamentals of oxygen steelmaking are described and a vision on the future is presented.

Glacial lake sediments or glaciolacustrine deposits form a significant portion of the Canadian, Scandinavian and Russian landscapes. Furthermore, 50 per cent of the Archean volcanic belts within the Canadian Shield area are covered wholly or in part by these deposits. Because of the high electrical conductivity and low hydraulic conductivity of these compact sediments, the application of geophysical (electrical) and geochemical techniques in such areas becomes a difficult task. The presence of these sediments has therefore hampered exploration for metallic sulphide deposits in some of the most important metallogenic environments of Canada. Similar problems exist in some tropical countries, such as Australia, where the overburden may be very conductive. In this paper, the extent and provenance of the glaciolacustrine deposits within the Canadian Shield are described. The geochemical and geophysical factors that hinder exploration in the clay belts are reviewed, with case histories of successful and unsuccessful applications of some of these techniques. The most successful geochemical technique used within glacial clay belts is the sampling of lodgement till beneath the clay cover, and the analysis of the heavy mineral fraction of that till. Surficial sampling has not been successfully applied. Some geophysical techniques, more specifically electromagnetic and magnetic induced-polarization techniques, have detected mineralization beneath substantially deep clay or saline overburden layers. Some suggestions have been made, such as the use of anions in hydrogeochemical surveys and the use of wide-band multi-frequency EM systems. When implemented, they will hopefully make the current geochemical and geophysical methods more effective in exploration for base metal sulphides within clay-covered terrains.

The use of cylinder electrowinning cells, such as emew® technology, for the recovery of silver from primary and secondary sources has been growing. In this study, common operating parameters used in silver electrowinning were evaluated for recycling applications. Silver powders were produced from an industrial solution in a laboratory scale emew® cell. A design of experiments was employed to evaluate the effects of HNO3 concentration, iron concentration, current density and solution flow rate on current efficiency, particle size, bulk density, and crystallographic orientation. Current efficiency was affected by each parameter with increasing HNO3 concentration having a strong negative effect, increasing iron concentration and current density having moderate negative effects and increasing flow rate having a positive effect over the ranges examined. Finer particles were produced with increasing current density and decreasing flow rate. Bulk density increased when HNO3 concentration increased. The crystallographic orientation of all powders was dominated by the (111) plane. Increasing flow rate decreased the relative intensity of (200) direction. Based on these observations, silver electrowinning in cylindrical cells can operate at high current efficiency and produce larger powders at low HNO3 concentration, low iron concentration, low current density and high flow rate.

These fields of metallurgy are now so comprehensive and involved that even the graduate metallurgist has to specialize in one or the other.In recent years, the relatively new science or technology of non• destructive testing has also entered the industrial scene, with tremendous impact and ramifications. So much so that, certainly, no .discussion on metallurgy can be complete without including some reference to it.Obviously, one paper cannot hope to cover in detail the relationship of the whole science of metallurgy to the mining industry. Consequently, only a very brief reference will be made to the field of Process Metallurgy, our major concern being with Physical Metallurgy and Non-Destructive Testing."

Uranium minerals are often associated with iron minerals, and during the hydrometallurgical processing of the uranium ores, iron plays several significant roles. The presence of Fe(III) in solution promotes the oxidative acid leaching for the recovery of uranium. The control of the distribution of impurities in milling and refining is also affected by dissolved iron. When rejected from the process streams, iron usually collects other impurities and contributes to the stabilization of the wastes for final disposal. These roles of iron, as they relate to current uranium processing operations, are discussed in detail, and some broad and historical perspectives are also presented.

"Smelting of copper-gold ore from nearby Rossland mines started at Trail in the 1890s. As ore from the Rossland mines became exhausted, lead smelting of hand-sorted galena ore from other British Columbia mines was initiated. With the development of flotation technology for the separation of lead, zinc, and iron sulphides in the first two decades of this century, the large Sullivan orebody at Kimberley, British Columbia, became the f oundation for the growth of a major zinc and lead smelter at Trail. Lead smelting began in 1901, electrolytic zinc in 1916, and by 1984, the Trail metallurgical complex had produced 10 million tons of each metal. Its present capacity is 270000 tonnes per year of zinc and 110 000 tonnes/year of lead.This paper reviews the history of technological changes in the Trail production plants, emphasizing the zinc plant modernization program started in the 1970s, and also the planned introduction of the QSL oxygen lead smelting process in the late 1980s. It was registered as the Consolidated Mining and Smelting Company of Canada Limited in 1906; in 1966, this name wasshortened to Cominco Ltd.The Rossland mines continued to supply copper ore for the smelter until the late 1920s, but lead-silver ore also became available from the contemporary mining boom in the Slocan area, about 80 km away. In 1901, the Trail smelter diversified into lead; and when the CM&S Co. acquired the St. Eugene Mine at Moyie and the Sullivan Mine at Kimberley, the smelter was guaranteed a firm supply of lead ore. The company also purchased the West Kootenay Power and Light Company, which even before the turn of the century had constructed the first of four hydroelectric generating plants on the Kootenay River near Trail. This acquisition assured the CM&S smelter and its local mines of a stable power supply and the opportunity to diversify into power intensive technology."

Advocate Mines Limited came into initial production on June 30, 1963, with an annual capacity in excess of 60,000 tons of high-quality chrysotile asbestos fihres, thus strengthening Canada's position in world production. The history of this development is traced from discovery through initial exploration, financing, orebody delineation and evaluation, pilot-plant production and product evaluation, construction of the plant, construction of deep?-sea shipping facilities, provision for a closed shipping season, and provision for the remoteness and for the lack of services, through to realization of full production capacity. The many unique aspects of the project are given special attention, particularly in the light of the first year of full-capacity operation. The marketing of the products in a highly competitive world market is reviewed, with special emphasis on product evaluation, quality control and the shipping of high-quality products to consumers throughout the world. "Low back pains account for about 13 per cent of all compensation claims made to the Quebec Workmen's Compensation Commission and cost the employers a sum exceeding ten million dollars. The frequency and cost of these health problems in Quebec metal mines are proportional to the provincial trends. An elaborate review of the literature on the causes, nature and prevention of low back pain is made in this presentation. A prevention program for low back pain has been designed in cooperation with a team of seven medical specialists and two physiotherapists for the Quebec metal mines. The program is especially designed for persons who have had low back pain, in order to prevent a recurrence, and for persons beginning to feel chronic difficulties. It is based on existing programs at the Hawthorne Plant of Western Electric Company and at Minnesota Mining and Manufacturing, but it requires a much different approach because of the nature of medical care available at the mining sites. The program is difficult because it involves a change of attitude for every employee and every supervisor. The program, so far, is beneficial because several men are now seriously engaged in an active program of reconditioning and because the problem of low back pain ie beginning to be seen from a new angle."

"The conversion of cryptocrystalline magnesite to caustic magnesia was studied experimentally at temperatures of 400–1,200°C and for calcination times of up to 8 h. A differential thermal analysis– thermal gravimetric analysis showed that decomposition begins at temperatures as low as 340°C and is completed at 600°C. Specific surface area, iodine adsorption number, crystallite size, and loss on ignition were measured to characterize the product quality. It was found that high-quality caustic calcined magnesia can be produced in a narrow temperature (600–650°C) and time range (1–4 h).RÉSUMÉ La conversion de magnésite cryptocristalline en magnésie caustique a été étudiée de manière expérimentale à des températures de 400 à 1200 °C et pour des temps de calcination atteignant 8 heures. Une analyse thermique différentielle – analyse thermique gravimétrique montre que la décomposition commence à des températures aussi basses que 340 °C et qu’elle est complète à 600 °C. La surface spécifique, l’indice d’adsorption de l’iode, la taille des cristaux et la perte au feu ont été mesurés afin de caractériser la qualité du produit. Il a été trouvé qu’une magnésie caustique calcinée de grande qualité peut être produite dans un petit écart de température (600 à 650 °C) et dans une période de temps variant entre 1 et 4 heures."

"AbstractThis paper discusses the methods of handling air in a large asbestos mill presently being completed at the Jeffrey mine of the Canadian Johns-Manville Company in Asbestos, Quebec.The mill, being the largest single asbestos producer in the world and capable of handling over 14,000 tons of ore per day, requires vast quantities of air. A minimum of 2,500.000 c.f.m. is required or about 10 tons of air for each ton of ore milled.Short descriptions of the process and systems requiring this air are given, followed by details of the fans and filters which make up the heart of the mill.This 'draw through' system, located on the top or 12th floor, is an automatically .controlled volume-pressure system creating the required suction to draw .air throughout the mill building and its numerous air systems.The dry mechanical method of milling develops enormous quantities of airborne dust and fibre. A section of this paper is devoted to a description of the multiplicity of dust systems within a system to control, filter, and remove this dust.Finally, the paper describes the method of returning the filtered air to the• working floors or to the outside, with some notes on heat, humidity and dust counts.IntroductionGeneralTHE discussions in this paper deal only with operations where air movement is involved. "How well is the Canadian coal industry able to expand in the tough competition with other fuels in Canada and with other suppliers in the international, metallurgical and thermal coal trade? Coal production as a whole decreased between 1950and 1960 and, although there has been a tripling of production since then, underground production continued to decrease until 1975. This trend has been reversed to a certain extent as a result of the modernization of mines in Cape Breton, but in 1978 over 85% of coal production came from surface mining.Against this background, the paper reviews current Canadian mining operations as described in papers presented at the 1979 CIM Annual General Meeting. Conclusions are then drawn regarding some of the longer-term mining applications in relation to the latest coal demand forecast, which indicates a potential Canadian production requirement of 160 million tonnes per year by 2000. IntroductionThe Canadian 'coal industry is experiencing a period of expansion and a new record for production is set with each passing year. This growth pattern over the last IS years has been based on two main markets-the generation of electricity in Canada and the export of coking coal to Japan. Supply to those markets has entailed either the development of mining, coal preparation and transportation systems for the delivery of large volumes of products with predetermined specifications or the establishment of minesite plants designed specifically to suit the characteristics of the coal in the adjacent deposits (Fig. I).Coal is a low-value commodity in relation to its bulk, and the economics of coal use become progressively less attractive with increasing distance from the producing mine. The transportation component in the export trade and in the movement of western coal to Ontario is a major cost factor. In the latter case, it approaches the cost of coal produced at the mine. In addition, the .international competition among coking coal producers chasing diminishing markets in a worldwide steel recession as well as the competition from U.S. coals and other fuel s for Canadian thermal coal have introduced a tight set of parameters to govern mining practices in all parts of the country. Some appreciation of the required changes in mining techniques brought about by declining traditional markets and the rigorous demands of the new bulk markets can be gained by comparing production from surface and underground mines over the past 25 years (Fig . 2)."

This paper presents a case study of how an asset strategy and zero based budget was developed for an existing crushing plant that had been purchased from the contract service provider by an Australian Iron Ore miner. The goal was to directly align the strategies and budget to the business goals. This however was not a simple task due to poor historical records and a general lack of information. These challenges were overcome and the benefits of a documented maintenance strategy, a justifiable zero based budget and employee engagement were realized.

Introduction The Sydney coal-field extends for a distance of thirty miles along the northeastern coast of Cape Breton island. At a central focal point at the tip of the south arm of Sydney harbour, seven miles or so in from the Atlantic ocean, is the city of Sydney, with Port Morien to the southeast and Sydney Mines to the north . Mining centres along the ocean coast between these points include Birchgrove, Reserve, Glace Bay, and Waterford. The field is divided into three districts or 'basins', namely, Morien basin to the south, Glace Bay in the centre, and the Lingan-Sydney Mines basin to the northeast. The eastern and western portions of the latter are known as the Lingan and the Sydney Mines basins, respectively. Six distinct coal seams are described as existing in the Morien basin, nine in the Glace Bay basin, and six in both the Lingan and the Sydney Mines basin. Although known by different names in the several basins, a definite continuity of the seams has been established.

Location and History The Sherritt Gordon mine is in northern Manitoba, one hundred miles north of The Pas and forty miles northeast of Flin Flon. The original discovery was made by a Cree indian, Philip Sherlett, in 1922. The claims lapsed in 1924 to be re-staked and optioned by various mining groups who carried out a certain amount of development work before relinquishing their options. In 1927 the present Company, Sherritt Gordon Mines, Limited, was formed to take over the property. Production commenced in 1931, but in the following year operations were suspended and it was not until 1937 that the prevailing price of copper pemitted resumption as an economic operation. The mine has operated continuously from that time to the present. Total production to the end of 1947 has been: Copper . . . . . . . . . 301,813 . .,345 pounds Zinc . . . . . . . . . . . 112,636 tons of concentrat (50% zinc) Gold . . . . . . . . . . 83,070 ounces Silver . . . . . . . . . 2,651,317 ounces General Geology The consolidated rocks in the vicinity of the mine, all of Precambrian age, are a series of gneisses and form a part of a great area of what are known as the Kisseynew gneisses. The Sherritt is the only known economic base-metal deposit to occur within the Kisseynew series. Extreme metamorphism has produced recrystallization that has imparted a decided igneous-like texture to many of the units. However, the gneisses are predominantly of sedimentary original although the most basic member, a hornblendegarnet gneiss, is considered to be an altered basic flow. Figure 1 illustrates the intricately folded structure and the succession of roe types. The footwall enclosing members are of sedimentary origin and represent quartzite and arkosic and greywacke derivatives. The contact footwall member is gneissic quartzite, a medium to coarse grained rock composed mainly of quartz with minor altered feldspar (orthoclase and plagioclase), muscovite, chloritized biotite, and magnetite. Most phases of this unit show varying degrees of granitization.

"The optimal profile of a rock slope under given geometry constraint is investigated by means of the upper bound method of limit analysis. The optimal condition corresponds to maximizing stability factor. It is assumed that rock failure condition is suitably described by the Hoek-Brown criterion. Genetic algorithm is applied for locating the optimal profile. The optimal profiles turn out to be concave profiles but there are heaps around the toes of the slopes. Compared with plane profiles, the percentage of increase in stability factor can reach up to nearly 50%. The key geometry parameters of the optimal profiles are provided for practical use. The new upper bound formulation is capable of computing the stability factors of slopes of any shape, thus the stability status of a slope under man-made excavation can be monitored during the whole construction period.INTRODUCTIONIn mining industry, man-made slopes are excavated to create working surfaces. It is important to optimize the slope profile in order to maximize slope stability under certain geometry constraint. For instance, when the height and width of an excavation are assigned, a plane profile AC (see in Fig. 1) is widely applied in engineering practice, but it has been proved not the best one in terms of safety (Utili & Nova, 2007; Cala, 2007). A vertical profile ABC is the one with least stability. Thus, it can be deduced that there is a profile within the domain of the rectangle ABCD providing the highest stability. Cala (2007) compared the difference of convex and concave profiles in stability using strength reduction technique. According to Cala (2007), circular concave slopes can increase the maximum slope inclination under given factor of safety. Besides, based on upper bound theory of limit analysis, Utili & Nova (2007) assumed a logarithmic spiral profile to prove it is more stable than a plane profile in terms of the stability factor. Although the above studies attempted to seek the best circular or logarithmic spiral profiles, none of them considered the arbitrary shape of the optimal profile and its contribution to enhance slope stability."

Future nuclear reactor systems such as a sodium-cooled fast reactor are being designed under severe conditions in terms of operating temperature and irradiation fluence compared to current commercial reactors. For realization of such systems, it is necessary to develop an advanced structural material having both high strength and irradiation resistance at high temperatures. Oxide dispersion strengthened (ODS) steel is considered as one of the most promising structural material because of its excellent creep and irradiation resistance on the basis of uniformly distributed nano-oxide particles with a high density. Up to now, ODS steels have been intensively studied and developed to apply these materials to the in-core structural component of future nuclear systems. Several advanced ODS steels were designed and fabricated by a mechanical alloying, hot isostatic pressing and hot extrusion processes. This study focuses on the effects of heat treatment parameters during the fabrication process parameters on the microstructures of ODS steels for future nuclear system applications.

Introduction The major development of industrial minerals in Manitoba has been in building materials. 'The building-stone industry is developed far beyond the needs of the Province, and the well known Tyndall limestone is marketed over a wide area throughout the other provinces to Canada. Similarly, gypsum and gypsum products are produced in excess of local requirements and are exported to adjacent provinces. The crushed-stone, sand and gravel, limestone, and lime industries are sufficiently developed to supply the needs of the Province and, notably in the case of lime and lime-stone, there is a surplus for export to the adjacent provinces and to the United States. The manufacture of common brick is well established, but for face-brick and other clay products the Province is dependent largely on importations. Production of silica-sand will increase as Canadian markets become available through recognition of the utility value of the Black Island sand as foundry-sand and for other purposes. There is some possibility of the export of feldspar, of lithium ore and concentrates, and perhaps of salt. A considerable part of the Province has not been seriously prospected for industrial minerals and it may be expected that, as time goes on, other deposits of non-metallic minerals will be discovered and opened up, especially as the prairie provinces become more industrialized. At the present time, there is some activity in the southern part of the Province based on gas and oil indications. Whatever may be the outcome of this work, it should yield valuable information concerning the geological structure of the area.

"Goldcorp has embarked upon an ambitious, industry-leading, multi-year water use reduction effort. This is a proactive, voluntary effort that reflects our commitment to truly sustainable mining. This effort will focus on increasing water re-use and recycling, and reducing water inputs ultimately towards zero. All of our operating mines are expected to contribute to this effort and are currently in the process of developing plans to meet short and long term objectives. One of the largest needle movers to increase water re-use and recycling is in the area of tailings management. Within five to ten years at Goldcorp, it is envisioned that the need for wet tailings dams will be eliminated and that all new tailings facilities will consist of only filtered or dewatered tailings. Filtered tailings is developing into a mature technology with wide application in mine waste management. This paper describes a conceptual level evaluation on the transition from a slurry to a filtered tailings operation at the Cerro Negro mine in southern Argentina. Key benefits and challenges are highlighted.INTRODUCTION Goldcorp’s Cerro Negro operation is located in the Santa Cruz province in the Patagonian region of Argentina. Cerro Negro has been in operation since 2014 and commercial production was achieved on January 1, 2015. The processing capacity of the plant is 4,000 tonnes of ore per day and in 2016 produced 363,000 ounces of gold and 3.1 million ounces of silver (Goldcorp Inc., 2017). As the mine is located in a semi-arid area, it is important to evaluate technologies that could reduce freshwater consumption and maximize water re-use and recycle rates. The current tailings operation at Cerro Negro incorporates pumping of tailings slurry into a conventionally lined Tailings Storage Facility (TSF). Water is reclaimed from the tailings supernatant pond to the process plant via pumps, however, water losses occur due to evaporation and solution retention within the slurry tailings voids. Converting to a filtered or dewatered tailings operation would allow for increased water recovery prior to tailings disposal, and decreased water losses from evaporation and from retention in the tailings solids void space. This paper describes a conceptual level evaluation on the transition to filtered or dewatered tailings with the primary objective of moving closer Towards Zero Water."
