"The initial metallurgical response of the lead flotation circuit at Cominco Alaska's Red Dog Mine was substantially below feasibility expectations. A program of diagnostic mineralogical analysis pointed the way to a number of process improvements, including simplification of the flow sheet and installation of a large flotation column as a lead cleaner. A diagnostic mineralogical analysis of the improved circuit shows that inadvertent activation of both sphalerite and pyrite has been substantially reduced, resulting in significant improvements in metallurgical performance. Directions for further improvements to the circuit performance are suggested by the recent analysis.IntroductionRed Dog is a high-grade, sedimentary exhalative (sedex) deposit with relatively simple mineralogy. The primary non-sulphide gangue minerals are quartz and barite, with minor barium carbonate (witherite). The iron sulphate minerals, siderotil, rosenite and copiapite occur variably throughout the deposit. Mineral texture is variable ranging from liberated sphalerite grains visible to the naked eye to intergrowths, particularly between sphalerite and galena, to less than ten microns. Both pyrite and marcasite are present. To date no enhanced reactivity of marcasite has been observed. For this discussion, ""pyrite"" will be used to refer to both iron sulphide minerals. In common with other sedex deposits, Red Dog contains organic and sulphur impurities."

The application of biologically assisted methods for metal extraction in the mining industry has a long history, but development of modern techniques has been relatively slow. There is, however, a resurgence of interest in the industry with the recent development of methods to successfully treat base metals concentrates. Two major pilot plant programs for treatment of chalcopyrite concentrates have been initiated in the past year and results from one are beginning to be released. This paper provides an overview of methods that have been applied in the past; from the earliest deliberate applications of the technology, through the copper and uranium heap and dump leach applications, the more highly engineered agitated tank leach gold applications and the developments currently taking place in the industry.

Vanadium mineralization occurs in oxide-rich horizons within layered metagabbro zones of the Sinarsuk deposit, West Greenland. The main oxide minerals are vanadiferous magnetite and ilmenite, comprising 30% to 90% of the rock volume and the ratio of magnetite to ilmenite ranges from 3:2 to 4:1. Ore microscopy shows that magnetite and ilmenite vary between 0.2 mm and 4.5 mm in grain size, but locally they are coarser grained. Grains are subhedral to euhedral and annealed suggesting that they will liberate very well upon grinding. Electron microprobe analyses indicate that magnetite grains are homogeneous and have a vanadium content, in different mineralized samples, ranging from 1.93 wt% to 2.68 wt% equivalent V2O5. Ilmenite hosts abundant and variably sized hematite lamellae, and it has vanadium contents ranging from 0.32 wt% to 0.59 wt% equivalent V2O5. Preliminary beneficiation of two composite bulk samples shows the samples can be beneficiated fairly easily using low-intensity magnetic separation at a coarse grind (106 microns to 600 microns) to yield a vanadiferous magnetite concentrate. The presence of hematite lamellae in ilmenite prevents recovery of a satisfactory ilmenite concentrate. The most likely beneficiation flowsheet would encompass a primary mill (SAG or rod mill), which would grind to about 600 microns, followed by a rougher magnetic separation stage. The rougher magnetic concentrate would be reground in a ball mill until suitable liberation is achieved. The reground material would then be cleaned in further LIMS stages. However, further laboratory testing is required to establish the final beneficiation program. This work demonstrates the value of mineralogical investigation in guiding and explaining the results of beneficiation processes.

"Difficulties arise in implementing environmental technologies in the mining sector because important fundamental processes, which lead to the environmental degradation, are ignored. Weathering rates, the role of bacteria in the process and the incomplete application of the matching principle of accounting at the time the mining disturbance take place. Mining is a multi-stakeholder activity and the environmental problems have multivariate dimensions also effecting process.The limiting factors in the contaminant generation process are the transport of oxygen by advection, convection or diffusion in air or water and the associated microbial activity. Weathering products are transported from the mineral surface by atmospheric precipitation to surface and groundwater. This contamination takes place at different rates, requiring a long time to evaluate technological choices.Restoration efforts have to focus on slow reaction rates in the contaminant generating processes. Technology, which does not address the reaction rates and is selected based on inappropriate time scales, will not provide long-term solutions. Natural approaches to reduce acid generation, based on Ecological Engineering principles have required decades of research and field testing, but now show promise in addressing the cause of AMD and ameliorating its effects."

"OUT IN BRITISH COLUMBIA, we have a legendary creature called ""The Sasquatch,"" a large ape-like creature which, according to those who claim to have seen it, somewhat resembles the Abominable Snowman of the Himalayas. Through the years, the legend bas been perpetuated by hunters and prospectors who return from remote wilderness areas with fantastic tales about hairy creatures, twice the height of an average human being, who leave 2-ft-long footprints in the soft forest floor. However, the existence of this creature bas never been proven and the attitude in British Columbia circles is that the whole thing constitutes either a great discovery or a giant hoax, and is about equally unbelievable either way.The Sasquatch, however, is not the only giant in British Columbia. If you find the Sasquatch story un-believable, you'll fi nd it just as hard to believe what is happening in the mining industry out west. We have opened four new mines so far this year (1967), another mine is expected to be brought into production before the end of the year and any mining man will tell you it's just the start of a mining boom which will continue for many years if metal prices are maintained and the federal government sees fit to discard the taxation changes pro-posed in the Carter Royal Commission Report regarding mining."

Labrador City is some 912 air kilometers northeast of Montreal, and 417 ratl kilometers north of Sept-Iles, Quebec.Over 2,800 employees work at the Carol Project to produce some 20.0 million tonnes of concentrate and 10.5 million tonnes of pellets annually.In 1979 our Training Department started to develop the DACUM System of training for our Concentrator Operations Department.DACUM is an individualized, self-learning, training program. This paper will overview the milling, autoclaving, and heap leaching facilities which are part of the $400-million Betze development plan. Gold production at the Mine has increased from 40,000 ounces per annum in 1987 to more than 500,000 ounces in 1991. And in 1992 Goldstrike will be the single largest North American gold mine when it produces 1,000,000 ounces.1. "Worldwide, metal mines are going deeper. For example, in Canada there are six such mechanized mines planning production at 3000 m (10 000 ft). Working at such depths challenges all aspects of mining including the provision of ventilation to supply an equitable working climate for personnel and machinery.This paper explores the overall challenges of supplying ventilation in Canada’s deepest mines and how the volumes required could be minimized. This is essential because it must be remembered that ventilation and refrigeration are not only costly items to supply, but the magnitude of their cost is also very sensitive to the volume supplied. For the primary ventilation system this is obvious because of the cubic relationship between volume and cost.In deep mines, the main function of ventilation is the removal of heat transferred from the strata and generated by the mining machinery, and the air volumes supplied are designed accordingly. The second consideration is the removal of other pollutants that could be harmful to humans such as diesel and explosive fumes. However, the need for ventilation at its present design levels could be reduced. This paper discusses the implications of such technologies as: tele-remote mining and alternatives to diesel equipment on the magnitude of the volume supplied; ventilationon- demand which recognizes ventilation as a costly and limited resource; plus other aspects, such as the benefits of controlled recirculation, local cooling, and possibly heat rejection back to the strata to gain further advantage from new developments.Furthermore, this paper advances the need to be able to design ventilation systems more cost effectively and how such new advances as process simulators can be used in conjunction with ventilation simulators to explore the diverse options that could affect the air volumes required and provide more realistic economic data upon which to base design decisions."

"This paper describes the use of dynamic scheduling and discrete event control to provide coordinated control of multiple automated vehicles. This work has been carried out within ongoing research into multi-robot coordination developed around the underground mining scenario. Demonstrations using scaled laboratory models of underground mines illustrate the potential for this technology for full-scale implementation for mine-wide automation. IntroductionIn the past decade, the mining industry has been improving the efficiency of underground mining operations. Robotics and automation have demonstrated the potential to further reduce costs. Tele-operation of underground vehicles from above ground and autonomous navigation have reduced travel delays and allowed for single operator control of multiple vehicles (Bloomquist and Hinton, 2001). Other recent projects include the automation of the digging process as well as the drilling and blasting operations. Infrastructureless guidance systems are also being developed (Bloomquist and Hinton, 2001).Mine-wide automation requires significant developments at two levels: (1) the development of mining robots capable of performing tasks either autonomously or semiautonomously; and (2) the development of methods for automating operations at a systems level. This paper focusses on the latter, and describes a general framework for the coordination of multiple mobile robots in an unstructured or semi-structured environment."

Mining firms in Canada are increasingly incorporating the social and environmental interests of their stakeholders into their projects in an effort to become more sustainable. Such initiatives have included negotiating Impact and Benefit Agreements (IBAs) directly with would-be impacted, often aboriginal, communities near resource developments in the Canadian north. Why does a mining firm take on this extra time-and cost-intensive initiative when governments and regulatory measures are in place to address social and environmental issues? Past research has paid little attention to the corporate rationales for IBAs. Based on document review and interviews with mining executives, this study investigates the rationales of mining firms that ?over-comply? with legislative requirements by negotiating IBAs or similar types of agreements with communities. The results indicate that mining firms increasingly recognize IBAs as an intrinsic part of the permitting process. When queried, executives regularly identified the negotiation of agreements as ?the right thing to do?. While this response could be read in ethical terms, a commercial rationale is also clearly present. By building strong relationships with nearby communities, addressing community concerns, and directing benefits to local people, all of which are explicitly achieved with an IBA, mining firms are maintaining their long-term financial viability, thus their sustainability, within an evolving industry.

A working group from Anglo American, BHP Billiton, Rio Tinto and Xstrata reviewed supply and demand for graduates from mining education departments in countries where they normally recruit: Australia, Canada, Chile, Western Europe, South Africa and USA. Departments are typically small and increasingly unsustainable, resulting in a steady rate of closure. Supply and demand for graduates in the minerals industry is cyclical, with supply lagging behind demand and trending downwards. Currently, supply is tight and the industry is trying to expand with an ageing workforce. Greater collaboration between universities and within the industry is recommended to address these issues.

"Microflotation, laboratory batch, and in-plant minicell continuous tests were conducted to determine if copper ions not only activate sphalerite but also depress pyrite when the minerals are together. Microflotation tests showed that pyrite recovery increased with addition of copper ions in the pH range of 5-10 when alone, but decreased when sphalerite was also present. Batch flotation tests (Red Dog ore) showed that upon addition of copper, pyrite recovery decreased significantly. The continuous tests (Louvicourt Mine) confirmed this and indicated that with excess copper pyrite recovery can increase. The results suggest there is competition for copper and xanthate in favour of sphalerite. To take advantage of this competition it may be necessary to control the sequence and rate of copper, collector, and lime addition. INTRODUCTIONFlotation, in common with all physical separations, is an imperfect process that results in misplacement of minerals. One source of this imperfection is accidental activation by contaminating metal ions. An important practical example is the misplacement of pyrite to zinc concentrates. Flotation of sphalerite generally requires activation by copper ions, added as copper sulphate. Copper ions are also used to activate pyrite [l] hence there is the suspicion that accidental activation contributes to the recovery of pyrite (Py) with the sphalerite (Sp). However, recent literature has shown that copper ions may make Py less floatable if Sp is also present. Xu et al. [2] conducted continuous minicell tests in-plant at Kidd Creek Operations (division of Falconbridge Ltd.) and showed that while the addition of copper sulphate improved zinc/iron selectivity, it did so as much by reducing the recovery of pyrite as increasing zinc recovery (Figure 1)."

Froth flotation is one of the most widely used and effective processes for mineral beneficiation. First introduced in 1911, flotation technology has seen many developments over the past 80+ years. Innovations in reagent chemistry, equipment design, process analysis and process control have given design and plant engineers a powerful set of "tools" for process optimization. However, it does not follow that all flotation systems are optimized. As Klimpel observes: "The problem with the industrial flotation process is that it is relatively easy to get reasonable results, and relatively difficult to get excellent results" Klimpel (I 988). While reasonable was sufficient in the past, competitive forces will make excellent necessary in the future. Judging by the activities in many Canadian plants this transition is already underway. This paper examines the role of some of the optimization "tools" in effecting this change.

"History of Whitehorse Copper BeltThe first discovery of copper on the Whitehorse Copper Belt is reported to have been made by miners on their way to the Klondike in 1897. By 1899 the district had been well prospected and many of the presently known deposits had been staked.The first shipment of ore was from the Copper King property in 1900. This consisted of 9 tons of hand picked ore grading 46.4% copper. It was not until the period between 1912 and 1917, the production years of the Pueblo Mine, that significant ore shipments were made. Total production was 140,000 tons at 3.5% copper. An underground disaster killed six men and closed the mine in March 1917.Although the general area was dormant until after World War II, by 1947 geological mapping, magnetic surveys and diamond drilling had been done on the important showings. In 1954 Mr. Aubrey Simmonds directed the formation of Imperial Mines and Metals, which acquired by option and staking a large part of the Whitehorse Copper Belt. In 1957 Mr. Arnold Pitt reorganized the company as New Imperial Mines. With financing from Sumitomo and Toronto-Dominion Bank, a mill was built and production was started from the Little chief orebody by open pit in 1967."

Ground instability and subsequent rock falls are a major concern in underground mines. As a result, several mining companies are conducting risk assessments of the ground support installed in their mines. Risk assessment is now commonly used to provide mine operators with a systematic process to assess the strategic risks that could lead to injury to personnel or loss of production, and evaluate possible risk control measures. Risk assessments can be carried out to identify major hazards, assess the likelihood of occurrence and consequences of each hazard and estimate the level of risk. This process allows assessment of possible remediation actions to minimize the risk and likelihood of occurrence or mitigation of the consequences to a level that is reasonable and practical. This paper presents two practical mine applications of qualitative risk assessment of ground support to highlight the benefits of this process. Yearly or bi-yearly risk assessment of mine excavations can assist mine operators in prioritizing resources and areas that require support remediation. In addition, it provides a mechanism for proactive response to reduce potential risks associated with personnel safety, equipment safety and environmental impact. It also provides a baseline against which changes in ground condition can be compared and quantified.

This paper discusses the philosophies, strategies, goals and pitfalls in automating a mine schedule. The intention of the paper is to give an open and honest view of who could benefit from moving to an automated system, what you can expect from such a system, and what you should be aware of. Many companies feel that moving to an automated mine planning solution will allow the mine scheduling engineer to push a button and walk away, but the reality is that is hardly ever the case. Part of that awareness comes from understanding what is meant by ?automated mine scheduling?, and this paper address that. By contrasting what is meant by ?manual scheduling? and ?automated scheduling? it is hoped that the reader can gain an appreciation of the entire process.

"Particle composition distribution is an essential feature of materials processed by physical separation methods. The amenability to segregate a feed material in a concentrate and a tailings stream depends to a large extent on what is called usually the ""liberation"" of the various mineral phases that are present in an ore. In fact the energy consumed in crushing and grinding has the major justification of producing particles that are as close as possible to monominerallic. Monophasic particles are able to reveal physical differences in mineral properties that make their separation possible. For many years, various authors have insisted on the concept of liberation, without noting that, in practice, it can be a pure concept which does not lead to measurements or predictions. The present paper insists on the concept of particle composition distribution, in which the complete distribution is the information to be obtained, and not the ""liberation·· of various phases, just like for particle size distribution, the complete distribution is an objective commonly desired, and not one or two values representing the coarse or fine fraction.2. NOTATIONS-EQUATIONSFor the purpose of the paper, a particle will be characterized by its volume Vp, and its volumetric composition with respect to a mineral of interest, which will be given the notation ""O"". "Next to the actual mine of Les Explorations Muscocho Ltée in Montauban, Quebéc, you could find a total of 364 000 tons of flotation tailings assaying 1.4 Au g/t et 82 g Ag/t to the south of the municipality. This tailings pile is what is left of previous operations. Preliminary leaching tests on these tailings in laboratory columns gave interesting results which led to tests in larger columns in 1984 and to a pilot test on a 750 ton heap in Montauban during the summer of 1985.This paper briefly describes the columns tests performed at the Centre de Recherches minérales and the heap leaching test designed and conducted by SOQUEM in Montauban. "The maintenance strategies in the mining industry are changing from operative and periodic inspection strategies to a condition-based, predictive maintenance strategy centred in vibration analysis plus complementary techniques. Condition monitoring can also help to improve availability by being able to pinpoint and diagnose problems on operating machinery at an early stage. This reduces unscheduled downtime and production losses.However, in mining, for shovels operating in transient modes, with variable load and/or speed, the FFT (Fast Fourier Transform) standard approach is not directly applicable for analysis. This work illustrates how spectral order analysis and new transforms, called time-frequency transforms (TFT), allow us to monitor the shovel when it is working. Some practical examples showing the application of these analysis techniques to occasional vibrations measured on hoist and crowd transmission of a shovel are also presented. It is shown that at present, it is possible to carry out the vibration monitoring in the mining shovel while it is working, therefore avoiding the high cost of a loss of production which can occurr in traditional monitoring, where the measurement is taken while the shovel is out of production."
