Iron ore, which is transported by rail from the iron ore mines at Sishen in the Northern Cape, to the Saldanha Iron Ore Terminal in the Western Cape, needs to be analysed while loading to be exported. Every shipment will be sampled and an average analysis of the ore will be produced which is required by the purchaser at the receiving port. On arrival at the iron ore terminal at Saldanha, the ore is tipped from the rail trucks onto conveyor belts to be either stockpiled or direct-loaded. The conveyor belts run under the sampling plant and the ore is sampled periodically by means of an automated cross-belt sampler. This is the first iron ore port sampling facility in which the automated sampler is situated above the conveyor belts and not adjacent to them. A portion of the primary sample taken off the belt is moved to the dedicated sampling laboratory situated behind the cross-belt sampler and over the conveyor belt lines. The sample is split in the laboratory, one split being used for moisture and particle size determination and the other part is dried and then analysed by means of X-ray fluorescence spectrometry (XRFS) on fusion beads for major and minor elements. Particular care is taken to obtain high quality data for penalty elements.This sampling plant is completely automated and from the primary cross-belt sampler to final analysis by XRFS no manual steps are involved. This has meant that some processes are used which are suitable for automation and are ISO compliant but not necessarily ISO-certificated. The ISO manuals were developed with manual laboratory processes in mind. Precautions are also taken to maintain the integrity and representativity of the samples. The description, characteristics, advantages and application of a new bulk explosive for medium to large diameter dry blasthole conditions is described. A brief outline of the delivery system for the product is also included. This explosive has been designed to provide an alternative to ANFO, currently the most common bulk dry hole product available to the mining and quarrying industry. The selection of the optimum explosive for any blasting operation is of prime importance. It is a major factor contributing to the production of the desired results in terms of muckpile fragmentation, shape and diggability. The optimum explosive can be defined as the most cost-effective in producing satisfactory breakage and displacement of the material. ANFO satisfies this prerequisite for a significant proportion of dry hole applications. This unique, low density and low velocity of detonation explosive has been developed to provide the industry with a cost competitive alternative to ANFO. Typical loading or average inhole densities nominally range between 0.40 g/cc to 0.70 g/cc, depending on the application. Characteristics of this explosive allow for specific and common applications in open cut coal and metalliferous operations. These include ore/waste control operations, prestripping and presplitting applications, sites confronting cap rock problems, and large hole diameter quarries.

Blast vibration control and assessment techniques have been developed which supplement traditional charge mass scaling methods. The improved techniques, which can be used to predict air and ground vibration levels at the planning stage, and to assist in the control of blasting operations, have reduced the level of operating risk concerning blast vibration. In addition to such factors as charge mass, distance and blast vibration levels, these additional techniques take account of orientation of the blasting face, topographic shielding, wavefront reinforcement, and meteorological conditions. They have assisted in compliance with specified blast vibration levels for environmental licence and mining lease conditions, the reduction of blast vibration nuisance to residents in the area surrounding a mine, and control of building and rock structure response in adjacent areas on the mine lease area.

A summary of the more important work by previous workers is followed by brief descriptions of the rock formations and regional structure. Many persons hold the opinion that the metal indus- ries are fortuitous and that the occupation is one of sordid toil, and altogether a kind of business requir- ing not so much skill as labour. But as for myself, when I reflect carefully upon its special points one by one, it appears to be far otherwise. So wrote Georgius Agricola in 1556. He could have been espousing the sentiments of an indus- trial archaeologist investigating mining sites in 1986. South Australia has a very rich legacy from its industrial past-especially in the area of its mining history. Industrial archaeology, which is part of the broad field of archaeology, is concerned with the material and documentary remains of this industrial past. This includes the products and processes of manufacturing, industrial, technolog- ical and engineering activity and their relation- ships to people and the environment. `Archaeology' immediately conjures up the image of excavations in Greece or Eygpt. Excavation however is only a part of archaeological methodology. Industrial archaeology utilizes documentary historical rec- ords combined with field survey techniques (both above and below ground) to create a composite picture of the past. Interest in our recent past has burgeoned in Australia in the last few years. This interest manifests itself in many ways-the unprecedented popularity of Australiana and col- lecting, the plethora of Australian historic films, the growth of the National Trust, local historical societies and genealogical research. Fortunately these trends have been reflected in academic and legislative circles. Various univers- ities, institutes of technology and colleges of advanced education run courses in aspects of cul- tural resource management and conservation of the historic environment. These courses are com- prised of archaeology, architecture, geography, his- tory, materials conservation, museum studies, and national parks management and planning.

Research cruises dedicated to seafloor hydrothermal activity along the Kermadec arc first began with the Sonne-135 expedition in 1998. This was followed by the worldÆs first systematic survey for venting along an arc during the 1999 NZAPLUME I expedition. Since then, cruises dedicated to mapping plumes along the Kermadec arc include NZAPLUME II (2002), NZAPLUME III (2004) and ROVARK (2007). In addition, the manned submersible cruises SWEEP Vents (2004) and NZASRoF (2005) utilised the Shinaki 6500 and Pisces V, respectively, to sample in detail select hydrothermalsystems for mineralised samples, rocks and vent fluids. The ROVARK (2007) cruise was the first to deploy an autonomous underwater vehicle (ABE) along the arc which surveyed Brothers volcano at a far greater resolution than had been done previously by ships on the sea surface. While these expeditions have largely been led by GNS Science, together with its collaborators from National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, Pacific Marine Environmental Laboratory (NOAA/PMEL), significant contributions have been made by other groups from various nations, exemplifying the global interest in seafloor hydrothermal activity associated with intraoceanic arcs. Intorducing the hypothesis that the cause ,òi spontaneous combustion of coal is depending un the accumulation of heat produced by its oxidation, the authors derived the equation expressing the temperature change in a heap i fine coal. To solve the equation, thermal conductivity, specific heat and rate of heat ,eneration of fine coal (-48 mesh) were measured at various temperatures in the range _'0-65¦C. The equation was solved numerically and the volume of fine coal which would ignite spontaneously was estimated as the function of ambient temperature. Using 170 Kg of fine coal, everal experiments for confirmation were conducted. At the ambient temperatures of 60¦C nd 50¦C, coal began to fire spontaneously brut 00 and 110 hours later respectively. Increasing use has been made of engineer ing geology and hydrogeology in the development of the infrastructure for mining projects. The Geological Survey of the Department of Mines, the Department of Main Roads, the Irrigation and Water Supply Commission and private consulting organisations and mining companies, employ spec- ialist staff to carry out engineering geological and/or hydrogeological investigations. Such in- vestigations have been of assistance in recent mining developments in northern Queensland, in- cluding those in the Cloncurry - Mount lsa, Weipa, Greenvale and northern Borten Basin areas.

The mining industry has always been cost-focussed but in recent times mining companies have moved towards obtaining a competitive advantage through the implementation and sustainability of best practice in the areas of improved safety, operating costs, quality and productivity. This is the concept of Value In Use û that mining companies see value generated all the way to the bottom line through improved change, and those changes become an established mine practice. Many mining companies do not have the resources or the knowledge to sustainably achieve such an outcome. This has led to companies looking to their suppliers to deliver measured value to their business through partnership arrangements. Suppliers have been able to leverage their knowledge of products, product applications and services to offer alternative supply agreements that bring greater returns to their businesses while improving supplier/client relationships. Orica has developed such a partnership with Coal & Allied in the form of a Continuous Improvement Program. Coal & Allied is based in the Hunter Valley region of NSW and is the largest coal producer in that region. Both parties are contractually bound to jointly deliver Value In Use projects to Coal & AlliedÆs Hunter Valley Operations and Bengalla mine sites. It is the request of the Orica and Coal & Allied Steering Committees that this paper does not include the details of actual projects or the costs or key performance indicators associated with the program. This is to maintain the competitive advantage to both Orica and Coal & Allied through the implementation of such a program. It is in the writersÆ opinion that this paper does not lose any significance through this restriction as the most important component of the Continuous Improvement Program is not the projects themselves but the methodology behind them. With this in mind the paper will discuss the development of Value In Use offerings, the key aspects of the Coal & Allied and Orica joint program, what is a Value In Use project, how to measure its value, finally why and even more importantly what makes this program is a success.

The R70 test is a good indicator of coal reactivity to oxygen and is commonly used to provide a rating of propensity for self-heating. Tests performed by The University of Queensland Spontaneous Combustion Testing Laboratory have resulted in the development of a large database that shows the impact of coal quality on this parameter. From these results it is possible to infer an R70 value, which can be used to gain an appreciation of the intrinsic coal reactivity before it is even tested. However, any interpretation of R70 values must consider the influences of coal rank, mineral matter and moisture content to provide a better understanding of the spontaneous combustion risk of a particular coal.

Fletcher Challenge Limited through its subsidiary Grampian Mining Co Ltd has carried out an ore evaluation of one of New Zealand's largest known deposits of ilmenite located at Barrytown on the west coast of the -South Island, New Zealand.The ilmenite is located in a beach sand environment which has previously been mined for gold. Two analytical techniques were developed to quantify the resource. Considerable difficulty was experienced in this phase of the evaluation due to the presence of major inclusions within the ilmenite grains. Wet and dry concentration circuits, utilizing spiral, wet magnet, high tension and plate electrostatic separators have been G47designed to produce ilmenite from the ore. Studies to utilize the titanium content of the Barrytown ilmenite have been made. Recent work has been directed towards a titanium dioxide pigment process.

The paper re-visits an old and proven concept of winzing, a method widely used in the past to gather exploration data for accurate definition of the orebody. It is proposed to use a mobile Supersucker (a giant vacuum cleaner also known as vacuum lift), to carry out winzing activities underground. A brief description of conventional underground winzing used in the past is provided, together with a discussion on other underground bulk exploration methods used in Australia to date. Historical background, principles of the proposed system, Supersucker construction details and productivities, and benefits and advantages of the proposed system in comparison with other exploration methods, are outlined. Other relevant applications of the mobile Supersucker, including surface winzing, are also briefly discussed in the paper. With a view of using the mobile Supersucker to recover all broken ore stocks underground, included are also results of floor sampling conducted recently in the in-stope decline excavated in a coarse gold type, high-grade orebody.

The EnvIRONment process has been developed to treat steel works dust and organic wastes simultaneously. A pelletised feed is fed into a special DC electric furnace, the pellets becoming immersed in a molten slag above a carbon saturated bath. The iron oxide in the pellets is reduced and carburised whilst the organics are broken down to carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, hydrogen and water vapour. Volatile metals are vapourised and collected in the baghouse. Over two years of trials in a 100 kg DC electric are furnace has brought the process to the stage where it is ready for commercialisation.

Mining is a necessary part of our modern lifestyle. However, mining can cause damage and pollution of the environment and therefore we must manage our resources wisely accounting for the physical, biological and social environments. Contrary to the view of some people not conversant with the facts mining has in many cases improved the environment. This paper described how two sand dune systems that were unstable prior to mining have been stabilised by revegetation after mining.

The BLEG (Bulk Leach Extractable Gold) technique is a semiquantitative measure of cyanide extractable gold contained in a sample. A 5kg sample is leached in cyanide solution for 24 hours and gold is precipitated out of the pregnant solution using zinc and assayed by AAS. The detection limit is reported as ppb (parts per billion). Telfer is located 1300km north north-east from Perth in the Great Sandy Desert. The climate is one of hot summers with irregular rainfall and mild winters. A large portion of the area is covered by aeolian sand and seif dunes with poorly developed drainage, rare outcrop; topographic relief is a maximum of 96m. Poor outcrop and poorly developed drainage render conventional stream sediment sampling and soil geochemistry inadequate. Therefore a technique providing a minimum number of samples with maximum accuracy and sensitivity was needed. Consequently BLEG orientation surveys were conducted over the Telfer Mine area in 1983, 1984 and 1985.

Upgrading of Indonesia's Bauxite by Washing Method There were eight bauxite samples used in this research, three samples from Kijang contain total SiO2 18.36 - 29.16 per cent, Al2O3 40.12 - 48.36 per cent, Fe2O3 4.27 - 5.13 per cent, one sample from Tayan, contains total SiO2 4.69 per cent, Al2O3 38.95 per cent, and Fe2O3 19.67 per cent, and four samples from Mempawah contain total SiO2 33.5 - 44.8 per cent, Al2O3 29.8 - 35.9 per cent, Fe2O3 7.29 - 9.88 per cent. All of those bauxite ores have not fulfilled the requirement for Bayer process yet; therefore simple up-grading using a rotary drum scrubber is needed. The scrubbing process was carried out with time variable up to 60 minutes with solid percentage applied was 50 per cent and rotary speed was set up 30 rev/min. The bauxite was washed by following steps: scrubbing, screening, drying, and finally it was analysed to show chemical content. The washed bauxite produced has size fraction that is retained on the 1.7 mm of screen opening. The result of the research shows that the higher alumina content of the raw bauxite, the longer washing time is needed moreover the higher quality of the washed bauxite is produced. The highest alumina content of the washed bauxite was 53.67 per cent with the alumina recovery was 89.66 per cent and the concentration ratio of 84.80 per cent was achieved within 20 minutes of washing time of the raw bauxite (Al2O3 48.36 per cent). The washed bauxite resulted from this research is suitable as a raw material for Bayer process.

The quality and quantity of Australia’s secondary deposits, which include tailings streams and tailings dams, are higher than most countries’ primary deposits. In addition, these secondary deposits have already been mined and processed, meaning that the recovery of high-grade product requires low capital and operating costs.The most widely used process for the recovery of these valuable fine and ultra-fine hematite iron particles is the wet high-intensity magnetic separation technique, originally developed by Dr Jones over 55 years ago. Many of the original machines are still working today.The aim of this paper is to demonstrate the capabilities in terms of grade and yield of using sophisticated magnetic separation modules. All results and figures are obtained from test work and design and engineering work with material from the Pilbara. In addition, consideration is given to dewatering of iron ore product and tailings.Two types of tailings have been identified for processing. Firstly, tailings that have already been deposited in a tailings storage facility, and secondly, live tailings streams from an existing wet iron ore beneficiation plant. In both cases, the technical and practical results are shown along with relevant flow sheets and plant layouts. Finally, this paper highlights the total predicted power and water consumption, capital requirements and projected operating expenses.The results show that the operating costs are significantly lower than the mining and processing operations that are required for an equivalent amount of iron ore. The recovery of iron depends on various factors but is within the 30–50 per cent range at an equivalent grade to the mainstream product. Another significant benefit is that the magnetic separation process is water positive, meaning that water is released rather than added in the process.The processing of the Pilbara’s secondary deposits will therefore result in an overall reduction in operating costs, an increase in product yield from a plant, extend the life-of-mine and offer environmental benefits by reducing the tailings footprint and water usage.The quality and quantity of Australia’s secondary iron ore deposits and tailings are such that many other countries would judge these as equivalent to primary deposits. A promising source for the extraction of rare metals and REEs in Russia is the eudialyte ores of the Lovozero deposit, which do not contain active uranium components. The eudialyte ore reserves of the Lovozero Massif are considered virtually unlimited and therefore have the potential to become a primary source of a number of rare and rare earth metals. The goal of this study was to comprehensively examine the effect of the parameters of high-power nanosecond electromagnetic pulses (HPEMP) and dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) on the leaching performance of eudialyte concentrate and the selective separation of zirconium and REEs from productive solutions. Using scanning electron microscopy and infrared spectroscopy, the mechanism behind the intensification of acidic dissolution of eudialyte as a result of pretreatment with energy impacts was described. During the HPEMP treatment, weakening and destruction of the eudialyte surface was observed, which at the substructural level is expressed in the deformation and local destruction of Si10O27, Si9MO30 resulting in formation of microcracks. During the DBD treatment, the formation of characteristic defects was observed in the form of imprints of dielectric breakdown microchannels and individual mineral fragments. Pretreatment of eudialyte concentrate using HPEMP made it possible to increase the recovery of zirconium into the pregnant solution of leaching by 3.4–4.3 per cent (from 86.6 per cent to 90.9 per cent) and by 4.1 per cent (from 86.6 per cent to 90.6 per cent) when using DBD. The increase in the total recovery of REEs was 1.2–1.8 per cent (from 87.7 per cent to 89.2 per cent). The effect of pH values, solution temperature, initial concentrations of valuable components on the successive recovery performance of zirconium and REEs from the pregnant solutions nitric from the acid leaching of eudialyte concentrate by chemical precipitation was examined. The possibility of selective separation of the zirconium product and rare earth elements with a zirconium recovery of 99.95 per cent and a REE recovery of 87.5 per cent was established. REE loss with the zirconium product was 8.0 per cent and 4.5 per cent with the spent pregnant solution.

The Kaltails Project is situated close to the city of Kalgoorlie-Boulder in Western Australia. Located on the south-eastern fringe of the Golden Mile, Kaltails has been in operation since June 1989. The tailings forming the reserve for Kaltails have been derived from 100 years of underground mining on the Golden Mile, but, some of the re.;erve has been retreated in the past. A map of the tailings reserves and treatment plant site is presented as Figure 1. The gold project is a joint venture between Poseidon 90 per cent and Gold Corporation (ten per cent) and is managed by Poseidon Gold Kaltails.

‘Like every other commodity, the value of the metals is subject to variation’ (Ricardo, 1817). Mineral commodity price uncertainties have always been a significant issue in mining business due to the close relation between global economic conditions and commodity prices, which commonly generates significant and unexpected price fluctuations. Price forecasts have been driven by economic theory, which states that in the long-run market will be balanced and that prices tend to the marginal cost of production. However, this theory has been misunderstood in the mining industry and future prices through time, in real terms, are assumed to be unchanged. This is unrealistic due to regardless of the cycling nature of economy and the omission of uncertainties. Furthermore, using historical data in traditional price forecast approaches does not guarantee realistic predictions as past events will not necessarily be repeated at the same intervals and with the same intensity. Mining, finance and economic sectors have made significant research efforts to predict prices and control uncertainties through classic linear, Gaussian and probabilistic simulation approaches. However, by definition, uncertainties cannot be measured or accurately modelled. Uncertainties can be identified to measure and manage the associated risks; therefore, uncertainties in mining projects have been historically misinterpreted, erroneously measured and poorly controlled. It is widely known that supply and demand functions drive market prices. While technological development noticeably influences supply, demand is strongly driven by psychological factors, mainly related to customer preferences and lifestyle expectations. Thus, human behaviour is one, or if not, the most important variable to determine commodity prices in a competitive market. During the last decades, alternative methodologies have been used to study uncertainties in human, environmental and market behaviours. Chaos theory, fractals, artificial intelligence and econophysics have been widely and successfully used to investigate complex dynamic systems to address uncertainties over time in the fields of neurosciences, meteorology, aviation and market trading. The application of these techniques in the market suggests a more realistic approach to the business environment. Through the combination of the methodologies above a novel long-run price uncertainties simulation approach that emphasise the differences between risks and uncertainties is proposed in this paper.
