Various methods for stress measurement in the coal industry are briefly reviewed. Methods for presenting and interpretation of measured stress and displacement data are discussed with a view to assessing the mechanisms of failure. Arguments are presented for reviewing the current practices in this regard with reference to coal pillar and strata stability analyses.

The Mt Lyell Mine, situated in Queenstown on the west coast of Tasmania, has a production history of more than 100 years. Previous mining activities have resulted in substantial modifications to environmental conditions at Mt Lyell and disposal of sulphidic waste rock across the lease has left a legacy of on-going environmental impacts including acid drainage (AD). In 1995 Copper Mines of Tasmania (CMT) was granted a mining lease Irons the Tasmanian State Government for redevelopment of Mt Lyell and indemnity from actions concerning pollution from previous occupation and use of leased land. The Environmental Management Plan (EMP) for the Mt Lyell redevelopment committed CMT to be responsible for waste rock dumps generated from their activities and to ensure that management is in-line with best practice environmental management principles. CMT commenced commercial production in December 1995 with sulphidic material from development of the underground Prince Lyell mine reporting to a single waste rock dump constructed according to a management plan developed in July 1995 and superseded by a management plan for extension in May 1997. The CMT waste rock dump currently has a total capacity of 220 000 m- and approximately 120 000 m3 of rock have been placed to-date. Material reporting to the dump is placed in a densely compacted state to a controlled surface profile. The dump is clay capped and a final revegetated soil layer placed on top. A rock pitched drain extends down to a wetland area in order to remove stormwater and minimise possible soil erosion on the revegetated sections. An integral part of the management plan for the waste rock dump involves characterisation of waste rock to identify geochemical rock types according to acid forming potential with provision for selective placement within the dump. High-risk materials are selectively placed and covered within the core of the waste rock dump, where possible, to control sulphide oxidation. Monitoring equipment has been installed in the waste rock dump by the Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation (ANSTO) and an on-going monitoring program has been established to demonstrate the integrity of the dump cover as a barrier to the influx of atmospheric oxygen into the dump. The overall objectives of this program of work are to control the oxidation of sulphidic waste rock in the waste rock dump, minimise the risk of AD, prevent pollution of the aquatic environment and thereby demonstrate the integrity of the CMT waste rock dump management Strategy.

In this paper, three types of value-adding in the minerals industry are discussed: downstream processing, improving the efficiency of existing processing and increasing the knowledge base and expertise of the staff. It is shown that, while downstream processing seems to offer a good way of improving Australia's trade position, there are a number of impediments to such development, notably, limited access to the appropriate technology and overseas markets. Transport costs can also be a problem. To reverse the situation will require more positive policies by government. In the meantime, something can be done towards adding value by increasing the efficiency of existing processes. Examples are given, showing how it might be possible to make economies in reagent costs in the gold industry, how innovative technology has led to more complete processing of a tailings dump, how research might lead to an increase in the throughput in the production of synthetic rutile and how it is possible to leach selectively from gold/copper ores.

Pre-concentration of low grade ores can improve the economic and environmental sustainability of an operation significantly, with opportunities for implementation ranging from run-of-mine to mill discharge depending on ore specific characteristics. For a gravity separation, where the performance is fundamentally constrained by mineral liberation, these feeds often represent a very difficult separation given the dominance of the relatively coarse gangue and fine liberation sizes. Thus, building knowledge of the feed through characterisation of the density distribution is critical to assessing amenability before progressing towards lab/pilot-scale test work and full-scale operation. The traditional approach to determining the density distribution typically involved sink/float testing, however, recent developments in hydrodynamic fractionation using inclined channels now offers a more cost-effective alternative with minimal health and environmental risk. A non-hazardous dense liquid, namely an aqueous solution of lithium heteropolytungstates (LST), is supplied as fluidisation to a REFLUXTM Classifier, consisting of a vertical section below a system of inclined channels, operating in semi-batch configuration. Fractionation is achieved by increasing the flow rate incrementally and collecting the particles to form a series of flow fractions. The purpose of this paper is to present this new method in the form of a case study, aimed at assessing the amenability of a low grade gold-bearing sulfide ore to pre-concentration. The robustness in the method is demonstrated through comparison with sink/float data, examining the density distribution and the liberation-limited product grade and recovery achievable. These data are then used as a benchmark to assess water-based continuous gravity separations conducted on the feed using a laboratory-scale REFLUXTM Classifier. This data set is used as the basis for process modelling and empirical validation for the recently established partition surface of the separator.

Microstructure of CaO-SiO2-based glassy samples with various Al2O3 contents were examined quantitatively by Raman spectroscopy and 27Al MAS NMR (magic-angle spinning nuclear magnetic resonance). Sequence of multiple cluster models of aluminosilicate system modified with Ca2+ and Na+ cations have been designed, and Raman spectra simulation were carried out after geometric optimisation by quantum chemistry (QC) ab initio calculation. The functional relationship between Raman scattering cross-section (RSCS) and stress index of silicon-oxygen tetrahedron (SIT) for aluminosilicates was established, which was applied to the calibration of experimental Raman spectra. Some five-fold coordinated aluminium (AlV, around 5 per cent) and less than 2 per cent sixfold coordinated aluminium (AlVI) were detected by 27Al MAS NMR, while most of aluminium remained in tetrahedral sites (AlIV). The hyperfine quantitative results of Raman spectroscopy and NMR showed a gradually production of AlIV with addition of Al2O3, along with the significant adjustment of Qi species distribution, in which Q1, Q2 reduced and fully polymerised Q4 increased while Q3 showed a non-monotonic variation and obtained the maximum at Al2O3 = 18 mol per cent. Furthermore, the effects of aluminium to bridging oxygen bond types (T-Ob, T = Si, Al) and the degree of polymerisation were also discussed in detail. The evolution of microstructure and its correlation with the viscosity of CaO-SiO2 based melts, incorporating various Al2O3 additives, have been investigated by employing in situ high temperature Raman spectroscopy at 1823 K and viscosity model. These structural features related to composition are essential theoretic foundation to understand their properties. The average Qi evolution culminates in an overall enhancement of the degree of polymerisation. Viscosity was determined utilising a rigorously selected viscosity model, elucidating a consistent upward trajectory as Al2O3 content is incrementally added. Furthermore, a quantitative analysis of the relationship between viscosity and structure was conducted based on the average number of non-bridging oxygen per network-forming tetrahedron (NBO/T). It provides valuable insights for examining and predicting viscosity behaviour of aluminosilicate systems.

Production targets are the basis for almost every decision made by operations personnel in the daily operation of a concentrator. It is the production targets that determine how the plant is operated and therefore determine its efficiency. However, to achieve maximum plant efficiency production targets must be relevant to the process and achievable.In RoseberyÆs case, for many years, production targets were taken from budget data which, with the exception of mill feed tonnes and grades were carried forward from the previous budget. The zinc concentrate grade target was fixed at 57 per cent Zn, a long-term average; it was the accepted æstandardÆ for Rosebery. Historical data showed this target was never consistently achieved and plant efficiency was highly variable.Investigations into the possible causes for the variable performance ruled out plant and mechanical issues. Despite the Rosebery concentratorÆs age the plant and equipment are more than serviceable and reliable. The mineralogy of the ore and specifically the iron content of the sphalerite was found to be the most significant determinant of zinc concentrate grade. It was found with increasing frequency that the zinc grade of the sphalerite in the ore was below the zinc concentrate grade target. Consequently on these occasions attempts to meet the required concentrate target destabilised the process resulting in plant inefficiencies.Using the correlation between iron and zinc, data modelling was able to accurately predict the maximum zinc concentrate grade achievable for any ore type. By using on stream analysis instrumentation the operations personnel are now provided with constantly updated concentrate grade targets. By knowing the mineralogical limits of the ore at the time it is being treated process stability is maintained allowing plant efficiency to be optimised. This has resulted in a step change in plant performance and a significant increase in revenue.CITATION:Harris, G R, 2012. In the last decade, great strides have been made in the raise boring technique in China. Extensively, the drilling and blasting method has been replaced by the mechanized raising method since 1980. There are now over 3C raise drills operating in more than 20 mines. The diameters for shaft boring varies from 500mm to 2000mm, and to depths up to 90m. Tlis paper mainly describes the performance, mtLin technical achievments and applications of all four kinds of raise drills, and auxiliary equipment. Finally, some recommend- ations for future improvement in the raise boring technique are presented also.

A dynamic model of a dense medium circuit has been developed and tested against plant data. The model shows the response of the circuit to both controlled (changes in specific gravity set point or changes in circuit coal feed rate) and uncontrolled changes (changes in raw coal moisture, loss of raw coal feed) in operating conditions. The model is built up from dynamic models of the individual sumps, pumps, pipes, splitters, magnetic separators and automatic controllers in the circuit. The model can be used for design of automatic control loops and for investigation of possible process modifications such as changes in water addition points. This paper describes the model construction, the testing of the model against actual plant data and gives some examples of its use in investigating plant response to changes in operating conditions.

Thirty two polyacrylamide flocculant samples were selected from the wide range offered to the Australian coal industry. An extensive test program was conducted to consider the properties of the flocculants, the substrates, the process conditions and the water chemistry encountered in coal preparation plants. The study indicated that flocculants with molecular weights of 12 to 14 million and degree of hydrolysis around 40% gave the best "average" performance over a wide range of process conditions. The pick-up and filtration of fine coal was demonstrated on a pilot scale to be a critical function of flocculant properties. This study also showed that the agitation intensity during flocculation was a critical parameter in determining the settling rate of the slurry and the clarity of the resulting supernatant. An electronic meter to measure agitation intensity was designed, constructed and tested to demonstrate how, for the first time, laboratory results can be implemented in operating plants.

The application of reinforcement techniques to enhance the stability of underground coal mine roadways subject to high stresses is discussed. Research conducted in the Illawarra Coal Measures has been aimed to delineate the factors which influence the behaviour of rock above roadways and the performance of the reinforcement placed. Design considerations for the reinforcement of mine roadways in the Bulli coal are based on a quantification of the rock response together with a reinforcement strategy to enhance the structural integrity of the roof strata.

Problems associated with gas management become more significant as exploitation of coal reserves in the Bowen Basin in Australia becomes deeper. At Oaky North mine, relocation of production from one area of the mine to another with a higher gas content required the use of pre-drainage, post drainage and inertisation techniques to enable production activities to continue largely uninterrupted. Innovative surface to inseam drilling techniques were developed for pre-drainage of reserves close to mine workings and have proven to be largely successful. The gas management techniques adopted and specific experience gained are discussed in this paper.

Hydraulic fill using surface sand deposits or cycloned tailings has been used in underground mining for at least fifty years. Current technology requires a permeable fill and high cement additions for strong fill. Shortages in quantities of acceptable fill with finely ground ore may require rockfill or aggregate to be introduced as a supplement and these usually incur additional distribution costs. Alternative approaches to the problem are now being developed whereby the pulp density of the fill is raised so that it is delivered either as a dense slurry or as a paste. These regimes of fill behaviour are defined together with the plant and pumping techniques required to prepare and deliver the materials. Test techniques to define the different regimes of behaviour are identified and the variation in material properties for fills with varying pulp densities are outlined. The results indicate that high pulp density fills are stronger and have less permeability restrictions than conventional fills and that aggregate can be carried with the pulp. Thus the disadvantage of finer materials can be turned into an economic advantage. Criteria are developed for defining the type of operation suited to this Technology.

Thera ate further possibilities for the future which combine to give some idea of the likelihood of there ultimately being a completely manless face.

It has long been recognised that narrow vein mining needs innovative approaches to mine access and mining methods in order to improve the economics of this vital part of the mining industry. The mining equipment used currently requires large openings in narrow vein-type deposits making mining operations uneconomical. In view of this and other shortcomings of the current mining practices, a study was initiated to investigate the potential of using low profile electric loader with mounted conveyor in conjunction with the electric monorail haulage system (EMTS) to load and haul the blasted material, particularly in decline development and main haulages. Computer simulation based on the General Purpose Simulation System/Henrikson (GPSS/H) is used to model the system and evaluate its performance. The results are compared with those for conventional mining using trucks and loaders. The EMTS provides competitive haulage rates in substantially smaller excavations than is currently achievable. According to simulation results, the electric loader in conjunction with the EMTS had the same number of blasts as the conventional system and hence the same advance rate of 3.33 m per 12 hour shift. Furthermore, the total drill-blast-load-haul cycle time was less than the conventional system by one hour.CITATION:Besa, B and Chanda, E K, 2012. Customer requirements concerning the final products of iron mines are extremely stringent. Because of this, there is an ever-increasing need for mine operators to monitor and strictly control the quality of their product. This quality, as measured by the stockpile grade variability, is the result of a very complex process, where natural characteristics (the orebody and its geology) are transformed through the mining technique (open pit, shovel and truck fleet, blending into stockpile). The only way to reproduce and hence to control the variability of such a system, which is composed of several interactive sub-processes, is by simulation. A complete simulation of a Hamersley Iron Pty Ltd (HI) ore deposit has been undertaken to forecast the impact and cost of various mining methods, mining schedules and product stockpile sizes on variability of chemical and physical characteristics of the products. The mining simulation was made on a conditionally simulated orebody. On a range of criteria, the simulation was considered to fulfil the objectives set and was a valuable aid to analysis of product grade variability, operating and capital costs, selection of equipment, mine scheduling and setting of product grade targets.

The importance which matters of social welfare and environmental quality have assumed recently is the underlying theme of this paper. Demands for infrastructure reflect the change in emphasis from economic and technological development to those issues which affect the total well-being of the community. To put the importance of social change in perspective, examples are cited and a theme is developed which underlines the relevance of changes in public attitude and in government policies on mineral exploitation and related development and on the regimen of associated infrastructure sought. Planning on a long term or strategic basis and on a broad scale is put forward as an effective means of identifying changing social attitudes for the purpose of framing government and corporate policies. As a prelude to a section in which a description is given of a novel 'services baseline' concept and its use in the assessment of the current backlog of services

Challenges facing middle management in the 1980's and beyond are not confined to business matters such as industrial relations, government and legal constraints, corporate takeovers, and commodity marketing. More particularly they deal with people issues and the interrelationship of corporate/ family relationships. There is a need for corporations to acknowledge the growing conflict between corporate/family roles being brought about by such matters as equal opportunity, double professional marriage partnerships, personal mobility and the increasing stress faced by managers as a result of current demands and expectations being placed on them. While the main responsibility for managing professional life as well as the relationship between professional and private life rests with the individual executive, corporations nevertheless have a major responsibility to assist these executives in this management process. Corporations in Australia are taking steps to address this situation but much more needs to be done. This was highlighted in the March 1985 "Middle Management" course with its associated Spouses Programme presented jointly by Australian Mineral Foundation and The Australian Administrative Staff College. Effective communication is at the heart of the matter but no amount of training on this subject will bear fruit unless there is an associated commitment by executives to improve the effectiveness of their communi- cation process both in their corporate and family roles.

The literature relating to reduction of sulphides by carbon using lime as sulphur-absorbent is reviewed. A stage-wise thermodynamic model is employed to evaluate the practical feasibility of the direct reduction smelting of galena (PbS) concentrates with a carbon reductant in the presence of lime; a coke-rate of 65 kg/ton Pb is predicted by the model. The experimental data on the reduction of PbS:4CaO:4C mixtures under nitrogen were correlated by means of a finite difference numerical method and the values of the intrinsic rate constant I1 were derived. The results for the uncatalysed reduction are represented satisfactorily with log I1 = 1.247(±0.522) - 5540(±610)T-1.The catalysed PbS:4CaO:4C mixtures contained 2.5 wt% of ternary (K, Li, Na)2CO3 catalyst. For the catalysed reduction it was found that log I1 = 3.981 (±0.301) -7790(±353)T-1, where I1 (in both relations) is expressed in moles.(g.C.)-1.atm-1.s -I. The catalytic enhancement faclor was found to be quite large in the 1068 to 1262°K temperature range investigated here.

This presentation is to outline the current practice of mechanised stoping a one-metre wide, gold bearing ore body to optimise fragmentation, minimise dilution and reduce stoping costs.Coolgardie underground operations have historically been mined using traditional shrink stope methods, but in this recent economic environment (with falling gold prices and high costs of traditional methods) it was necessary to look for alternative methods in order to reduce costs and increase productivity.Although still in a learning and refinement phase, CGNL is satisfied that it is feasible, practical and more economic to use mechanised long up-hole stope and long-hole rising methods to significantly reduce the mining cost, reduce dilution, increase safety and increase productivity three-fold compared to traditional airleg methods used throughout the Fasten Goldfields.
