Three principal features of the ore at Captain's Flat, New South Wales, tend to complicate concentration of the valuable minerals, these being:1. The ore occurs in three more or less separate bodies which vary in texture and mineral ratios. Mining of constant proportions of the three sections, or adequate blending of the ore, is not fully effective, and consequently the flotation section is subjected to feedof varying texture.2. The mineral association in the heavily pyritic ore is extremely intimate. Composite particles exist even at 20 micron sizeI, and probably finer.3. The copper content of the ore averages_about 0,6%, which is high enough to justify recovery of the chalcopyrite in a separate concentrate. A review of the metallurgical history of the mine shows that this feature has been the cause of the several major changes in flowsheet of the flotation section since the commencement of milling.METALLURGICAL HISTORYThe mine started production in January 1939, at the rate of 250 tons per day of sulphide ore, assaying 0·68% Cu, 6·52% Pb, 10·8% Zn, and about 1 dwt. Au and 2 oz. Ag per ton.

Gold and copper mineralization in the Parkes area is hosted by a meridional sequence of Late Ordovician to Early Silurian igneous and sedimentary rocks on the central northern edge of the exposed Lachlan Fold Belt. The mineralized area straddles two zones separated in part by the Parkes Thrust and exhibiting different styles of deformation and mineralization (Figure 1). The western zone is characterized by gently folded rocks, with shallow dips and weak to non-existent axial plane cleavage. Faulting is restricted to directions oblique to bedding. Numerous occurrences of minor copper mineralization are known, but of recent national importance is the discovery of the Coradgery- Goonumbla porphyry copper-gold deposits by Geopeko Ltd. A resource in excess of 250 million tonnes has been delineated (Jones, 1985), and this represents the first porphyry deposit of sufficient grade and tonnage to be potentially mineable in New South Wales. The eastern zone is much more strongly deformed. Folding is tight with strongly developed axial plane cleavage. Faulting is abundant both parallel and oblique to bedding. Quartz veining is also abundant, and a narrow belt of gold mineralization adjacent to the Parkes Thrust stretches from Forbes in the south, through Parkes and Peak Hill, to Tomingley in the north. Over 31 tonnes of gold have been produced from this gold belt, mostly before 1914, and now three deposits show good potential for redevelopment - Peak Hill, and the London-Victoria and Lachlan lines of lode.

The Perseverance deposit is the most southerly known economic copper/gold deposit within the Cobar gold field. The deposit is situated approximately 12 km to the south-southeast of Cobar and is essentially blind to surface with the top of economic mineralisation occurring 750 m below ground level.Based on the December 2010 resource estimate (inclusive of reserves and net of depletion) the deposit contains 3 011 000 tonnes at 6.1 g/t Au and 0.90 per cent Cu (590 000 oz of gold and 28 000 tonnes of copper). The deposit is comprised of four principal lenses, the Perseverance, Hulk, Zone B, and Hercules lenses. In excess of 90 per cent of the known resource tonnes are contained within the Perseverance and Hulk lenses. The deposit is shear related and hosted within lower Devonian rocks of the Cobar Basin. The competency contrast of rhyolites juxtaposed against sediments by the Peak-Perseverance shear is the principal control on mineralisation. Both the Perseverance and Hulk lenses are primarily hosted by brecciated rhyolites juxtaposed against Chesney formation sediments across the Peak-Perseverance shear. This faulted rhyolite sediment contact roughly defines the global orientation of the deposit. The Perseverance lens continues within the shear for up to several hundred metres beyond the extent of the faulted rhyolite sediment contact. Mineralisation within the shear beyond the faulted rhyolite contact zone is hosted by sheared silicified sediments. The Perseverance lens remains open at depth and to the south.The Zone B and Hercules lenses, which are significantly less important in tonnage terms, are hosted by rhyolite breccias within the main body of the rhyolite and appear to be only tenuously related to the Peak-Perseverance shear. Within the Perseverance lens, the presence of northeast trending high grade breccia veins developed oblique to the north-south trending shear system has led to the development of steeply north plunging high grade ore shoots within a globally north-south trending mineralised domain. These high grade shoots have limited horizontal continuity but significant down plunge extent.The presence of coarse gold and the resulting strongly skewed nature of the gold grades, in conjunction with controls on mineralisation which are not parallel to the mineralised domain, has led to predictive difficulties regarding stope performance.Strong heterogeneity of the gold content of the ore and geological controls on mineralisation which are not parallel to the global trend of the mineralisation impose a set of difficulties which sound geological control is helping overcome.

This paper discusses the key issues in Discounted Cash Flow (DCF) analysis including the importance of data verification and the shortcomings in DCF analysis. Stockmarket valuation measures and valuation methodology for exploration and pre development projects are examined through examples and pitfalls are identified. The use of valuations in corporate transactions and their strategic value is also discussed.

"The requisite for maintaining optimal carbon concentration levels in a carbon-in-leach (CIL) circuit is of paramount importance in the prevention of gold losses. The process’s ability to recover gold from the aqueous phase is primarily dependent on the carbon loading profile of the CIL train.Newmont Boddington Gold (NBG) have over 2015 tested the Mintek online carbon concentration wmeter (C2 Meter) suitability for effective carbon concentration measurements in their CIL circuit compared to the standard method where the readings are taken twice a shift by the operations staff. The C2 meter works by passing a 1MHz ultrasonic signal through a slurry containing carbon where there is a relationship between the carbon concentration and the attenuation of that signal.It also highlighted another area where the C2 meter could be implemented at NBG whereby the instrument can be as a cautionary device for carbon losses in place of carbon safety screens.Citation:McCamley, C, 2016. With increasing depth of mining, geotech nical factors assume increasing importance in the design and operation of open pit coal mines. Dragline strip mines are particularly sensitive to stability conditions since the draoline is a relatively inflexible machine, particularly in relation to its limited dump- ing radius for overburden disposal. Geotechnical factors relevant to strip mine design include: 1. spoil pile stability 2. wall stability 3. floor stability 4. excavation characteristics 5. groundwater conditions A basic geotechnical investigation pro- gram for new mine feasibility studies is described. This includes: 1. terrain evaluation 2. geotechnical drilling and logging 3. geophysical logging 4. materials testing 5. seismic refraction traversing 6. groundwater studies Such a program will give an overall geotech- nical assessment of the site and highlight any areas which may require further, more detailed Investigations

The scheme of rehabilitation of surface plant commenced in 1936, included the provision of improved and more hygienic changing and bathing facilities for the employees.At that time the Thompson's Shaft section of the British Mine was being prepared for a resumption of operations, and it was decided to repair and re-equip the existing building. Thus any new scheme adopted could be given a thorough trial, and the proved arrangement used as a basis for the contemplated new main changehouse on the North Section.Investigations were carried out to determine the most suitable arrangement for the Thompson's Shaft changehouse, to provide for a total of 120 men, with particular regard to the internal fittings and fixtures. Also, as the mining conditions were such that a large proportion of clothes worn underground by miners, etc., were wet by the end of the shift, the problem of drying these clothes in the availaole time from a man coming off shift to his commencing again some sixteen hours later was one of the most important to be dealt with.The changehouses in use on the North mine section of the lease were provided with racks around the walls for the men to hang their street clothes on, and a section was partitioned off to house the mine clothes and their drying facilities. The actual drying was carried out by means of hanging the wet clothes over racks between which ran pipe coils heated by means of hot water circulated from the hot water boiler supplying the showers.This method had proved to be far from satisfactory for several reasons, the main objections being:-

Approximately 2.4 million ounces of gold and 11.3 million ounces of silver have been produced from the Umuna Lode by Misima Mines Pty Limited between June 1989 and the end of Decemeber 1996. Reserves remaining at the end of December were 32.1 million tonnes at 1.0 gram per tonne gold and 9.7 grams per tonne silver. To attain precious metal production of this volume, an estimated K60,000,000 (1996 Kina) was spent on exploration alone. from the 1940s to the present day. Exploration expenditure for the 1996 calendar year was approximately K4,400,000. With such a large investment in exploration, large quantities of data were generated and stored in various forms. To make best use of this data, it was necessary to organise and systematically store this data in a form compatible with a modern Geographical Information System (GIS). The Umuna Lode on Misima Island is a low sulphidation gold- silver deposit dated at 3.5 ¦ 0.2 Ma. The deposit is controlled by the 50 to 100 metre wide Umuna Fault- a moderate dipping, brecciated clay- chlorite- carbonate altered, normal fault zone. There is approximately 230 metres of mostly dip slip offset on this fault, which is measurable by the offset of the Cretaceous schist, marble and greenstone host sequence. Late Miocene microdiorite spatially related to the Umuna Lode does not appear to be genetically related to the gold- silver mineralisation. GIS was introduced to Misima at the end of 1995 and until recently has been mostly used for data storage and retrieval, the over- laying of various data sets to assist in targeting prospective areas, and as a drafting tool. The use of data-driven, predictive data analysis is the most recent effort in maximising the use of the extensive Misima database. By characterising the key controls and properties of the Umuna- type mineralisation, a Weights of Evidence, data-driven analysis produced a prospectivity map of Misima Island. The purpose of this map was to identify prospective areas yet to be explored and to assess the effectiveness of exploration to date.

How often does one hear that a recent feasibility study was not a success? Alternatively, when scope of the feasibility study was sent out to tender there was a large discrepancy in tendered prices. If the tendered prices were to be compared to the consumer market, for instance the purchase of a car, where the concept is transport in a controlled and safe manner, prices vary by large factors, but then so do the specifications. In the case of a feasibility study, prices should be within a tighter margin as the tenderers are all quoting against the same concept and specification. Why do these discrepancies occur? Price discrepancies will in every likelihood be attributed to two main factors; one, the perceived amount of work and two, the ability of the bidder to carry the risk associated with the feasibility study. It is, therefore, important that the scoping of the feasibility study covers the detailed requirements as clearly as possible stating what level of accuracy is required. The feasibility study is one of the first activities in the life of a project. The study, like the project it is investigating, is subject to the constraints of time, cost and quality. Its primary objectives are to demonstrate the viability of a project within the outlined scope and constraints.

An investigation was carried out at Diavik Diamond Mines Inc (DDMI) to identify and quantify the mechanisms through which ammonium nitrate (AN) was entering the mine discharge water. The goal was to develop and complete an investigation of the potential AN loss mechanisms in order to assess their contribution to ammonia in the mine water system. The initial phase of the project involved the collection and analysis of blasting and water quality data that were used to determine the mechanisms by which the ammonia enters the mine water system and to establish a baseline data set for comparison with results from future trials designed to reduce AN loss. Three potential options for reducing AN loss were identified through the first phase of the project. The second phase of the project involved conducting a series of monitored trials with changes made to the drilling and blasting process. The results of these trials were compared to the baseline data set to determine if the changes introduced for the trials had reduced AN losses while producing satisfactory blast results. This paper describes the process for the collection of the baseline data, provides an analysis of the resulting data, discusses the changes made to blasting operations in order to minimise AN loss and describes the results observed subsequent to these changes.

Sun Metals Corporation Pty Ltd (SMC), a wholly owned subsidiary of Korea Zinc Co Ltd (KZC) is a company formed to develop, construct and operate a zinc refinery, 11 km south of Townsville in North Queensland. The project opportunity exists because of on-going consumption growth for refined zinc metal, technological, environmental and economic obsolescence of existing zinc processing plants, and a prolonged ædroughtÆ of new zinc processing capacity under construction. The Project will utilise proven technology developed by KZC at the Onsan refinery in Korea. The Townsville Refinery has been designed to be the most environmentally-friendly zinc refinery in the world, and in particular to resolve the issue of secure, long term treatment of the ironbearing content of the zinc raw materials.

Crandallite and millisite in Christmas Island 'B' and 'C' phosphate ores are rapidly decomposed by sodium hydroxide solutions at about 80QC. As these phosphates generally contain less than 1% silica, an alkaline extraction process can be designed, in which up to 95% of the sodium hydroxide used, may be recycled. The insoluble residue consists of an impure, highly reactive apatite, which in pot trials, has given good responses as a direct application fertiliser; alternatively this residue can be underacidulated to give a granular product with fertiliser potential. The hot leaching solution contains up to 95% of the alumina and approx- imately half of the phosphate from the original ore. Simple crystallising techniques have been developed on a laboratory-scale to use this leaching solution for producing smelter-grade alumina and detergent-quality trisodium phosphate. As the demand for detergents is limited, an investigation was made of the reaction between trisodium phosphate and slaked lime, derived from a high-grade New Zealand limestone occurring near Oamaru. The product is calcium phosphate, containing up to 40% P205, and less than 0.2% each of iron, aluminium and fluorine, and it should be a useful raw material for phosphoric acid manufacture. A preliminary economic evaluation of the whole process looks promising, And warrants further investigations, including pilot-plant work.

Mathematical modelling was carried out to determine the probable convergence and vertical stress patterns around a retreating longwall panel in an underground coal mine in New South Wales. An 'Electrical Resistance Analogue' and a program called 'THREED' based on the displacement discontinuity method were used for the modelling. Parts of the obtained results are presented here and compared with some measurements of convergence at the site. The modelled and measured data agree better qualitatively, than quantitatively.

Australia is a world leader in the design and operation of mines accessed by the decline method. Literature indicates that a number of metalliferous underground mines using the decline system are also increasing steadily. This increase has generated a great deal of interest in underground haulage systems in future due to the huge costs involved in the development of declines. Studies have also shown that the current method of accessing orebodies by the conventional decline method has proved to be expensive, especially for narrow vein deposits. This is because decline development costs are influenced by mine planning and design parameters as well as available haulage systems that the mining engineer can choose from. The current access method suggests that more waste material is being extracted because of the size of decline openings adopted (5.5 mW and 5.5 mH). Also the conventional 1:7 decline gradient and turning radius of 20 m makes decline lengths, as well as the duration of development, excessively longer. This paper discusses results of a mine design case study with monorail technology as a method of accessing and developing the decline. The proposed system is economical, has high advance rates and offers a significant reduction in capital expenditure. The study compares costs, development metres and the duration of decline development using the monorail system with the conventional (truck haulage) access method. Results obtained indicate that the monorail technology has the potential to reduce the decline length by over 62.6 per cent and decline costs by 63 per cent for the case study. The monorail system also reduces the total capital development costs by 22 per cent for the same case study. Due to rapid development resulting from increased advance rates and the shorter decline length coupled with smaller decline openings, the time to access the deposit reduced by 71.8 per cent. This case study demonstrates that the economics of narrow vein deposits can be improved significantly by using the monorail system of decline development.

Monitoring for signs of elevated spontaneous combustion in the active goaf behind the longwall face is crucial for early intervention of any potential heating incidents. Typically, trigger action response plans (TARPs) are established at the start of longwall mining and often are only reviewed when triggers are activated frequently and become ‘nuisance alarms’, or in the worst case scenario after a heating event. Narrabri Mine has adopted a proactive approach of reviewing the longwall active goaf spontaneous combustion monitoring TARP at the commencement of each longwall block and prior to reaching a known ‘mylonite zone’ of crushed coal, which is associated with increased coal oxidation. The review is based on information recorded from the monitoring data of the previous longwall blocks as well as interpretation of relevant spontaneous combustion propensity results for the coal. This has resulted in the mine implementing a zoned TARP approach for each longwall block covering both the longwall retreat through normal undisturbed coal and the zone where the goaf is influenced by the increased coal oxidation associated with the mylonite coal. The consequence of this approach is that it has removed the issue of having nuisance triggers being activated during mining through a known increased oxidation zone, while maintaining a high awareness of indicators of spontaneous combustion.CITATION:Baxter, H, Claassen, C, Salisbury, O, Brady, M and Beamish, B, 2015. At Sams Creek a peralkaline granite porphyry dyke hosts gold-bearing sulfide-quartz-siderite veins. The granite dyke intrudes Ordovician-Silurian metapelite and quartzite, and has thin lamprophyre dykes along its contacts. The mineralised veins and the granite and lamprophyre dykes have been deformed during several phases of folding, the youngest of which is Early Cretaceous. The granite has been hydrothermally altered, with early magnetite-siderite¦biotite alteration overprinted by sulfide and quartz-siderite veins and quartz-perthite-albitesiderite-pyrite-rutile¦sericite alteration assemblages. The sulfide veins are composed of arsenopyrite + pyrite ¦ gold ¦ galena ¦ sphalerite ¦ chalcopyrite ¦ pyrrhotite ¦ graphite, with minor quartz and siderite. The gold contains significant silver (up to 30.8 wt per cent) and ranges in fineness from 692 to 844. Immiscible liquid-rich fluid inclusions, in quartz protected from recrystallisation by enclosing arsenopyrite, contain carbonic liquid that homogenised at temperatures of 320 - 355¦C. The Sams Creek gold deposit is distinguished from the orogenic gold deposit type by its stockwork veining, magnetite-siderite¦biotite alteration, high sulfide content, ore mineralogy and the absence of mineralisation in the metapelite country rocks. Features of the Sams Creek gold deposit do not fit neatly into existing classifications of granite-related gold-bearing deposits. The peralkaline composition of the Sams Creek granite and the absence of molybdenite and paucity of chalcopyrite, are major points of difference with gold-rich porphyry copper deposits. The presence of a lowsulf idation-state ore mineral assemblage, carbonate alteration and carbonic fluid inclusions at Sams Creek are typical of many of the reduced granitic intrusion-related type of gold deposit. However, notable differences are: the reduced type granites are metaluminous and calc-alkaline; and Sams Creek only has high As in contrast to elevated Bi, W, As, Mo, Te, and Sb in the reduced type. The Sams Creek deposit also shows affinities with gold deposits associated with alkaline magmatism, and it appears to be a new variant of this type as an As-Au deposit associated with a peralkaline granite and lamprophyre.

Risk Management has been applied relatively slowly in the mining industry. Except for the risk concept application in financial considerations, the application of Risk Management in safety management has been far from satisfactory. When applied it was treated in a global occupational safety and health sense. Regardless of how much the mining industry has progressed over the years it is still, in many respects, `state-of-the-art' business. The safety aspects of mining are well known and yet little understood by the public. Regardless of what has been achieved so far and how much effort has been put into it, mining is regarded as an unsafe and somehow rude business. Safety records of the mining industry vary from State-to-State. Latest mining related disasters in PNG and Queensland and some other fatal accidents support this public perception. They purport a need for change in managing safety in the mining industry. The latest mining fatalities have raised the issue: What must be done to improve safety standards? Duty of care, risk management and system engineering concepts can provide some answers. Risk Management principles which have been advocated for some time provide many answers and explanations and can make safety management more constructive and workable. What has been missing so far is that this concept has neither been applied nor has been modified for its practical application and purpose on a larger scale. A risk management approach to the management of safety and health in the mining industry is addressed, herein. This approach does not attempt to provide the solution. It does, however, provide a basic understanding of what Risk and Risk Management are all about. Rational management of risk is addressed in the life cycle and system contexts. A system of continuous improvement is applied. There is always a chain of events, outcome, exposure, consequence(s), and consequence(s) value(s). It means that development of an event takes place in time and space. Dynamic circumstances have been created in or within the system. It is a decision-making process designed to provide a methodology which is directed not toward a mathematical model but toward easy use and application in dynamic working environment, by decision-makers who can be anybody from either a risk taker or a risk creator. The emphasis is placed not only on arriving at the best practical, possible and fair decision but also on structured and systematic acquisition of knowledge about the system, its hazards and associated risks, hence increasing the decision maker's ability to manage the decision-making process related to the management of risk.

Exploration, including research, has fuelled the enormous expansion of the Australian mineral industry in the last three decades. Analysis of success and failure in exploration and research has therefore potentially powerful lessons and messages which may be used to influence the future shape and direction of the mineral industry. Research has been an integral part of organised corporate mineral exploration since its beginnings in Australia in the 1930s. In corporations, the activity generally called project generation or new project development is the main expression of exploration research but mostly it goes unidentified and poorly documented except perhaps when a successful discovery is made and reported on. The competitive nature of exploration means that extended and detailed analysis of corporate exploration research across the industry is impossible to achieve.

Following the Moura No 2 Wardens Court of Inquiry and subsequent changes to the Queensland Mining Legislation there is a requirement in Queensland coal mines for: a person with the recognised competencies to be appointed at each underground coal mine to the position Ventilation Officer; and the person is directly responsible for the implementation of the mine ventilation system and for the establishment of effective standards of ventilation for the mine. The Regulations require that an underground mine must have principal hazard management plans that provide for at the least the following: emergency response, gas management, methane drainage, mine ventilation, spontaneous combustion, and strata control. Other than strata control all the plans require the ventilation officer to have roles and responsibilities to develop, control, monitor and undertake actions in relation to these plans.There are also another 34 Regulations that either directly or indirectly requires the Ventilation Officer to take actions.The purpose of this paper is to outline the information that the regulators look for in sealing plans and the actions the regulators will take if the sealing does not go to plan (TARPs being exceeded).
