The suitability of magnetic surveys flown at low altitudes to identify buried heavy mineral (HM) strands has long been accepted. This is despite the low intensity magnetic response often obtained from such strands. The fundamentals of the magnetic survey method dictate that the closer the instrument is to the source the stronger the response. As such the optimal elevation for the magnetometer is at or near the surface. Iluka sought to use a ground based magnetometer to aid in the exploration target generation process and allow accurate targeting of exploration drill holes. Following the initial trial Iluka recognised the potential additional application of data obtained by a ground based magnetometer over known strand deposits. The detail of the ground magnetic images can confirm the assumed strand continuity between cross-sections of close spaced drilling and can aid in the definition of the geometry of different generations of mineralisation. The ability to confidently determine that the deposit has not been truncated by post emplacement erosion of the mineralised deposit may enable reductions in drilling requirements as well as assisting mine planning activities. Iluka intends to investigate advanced modelling of the magnetic data to determine the level of strand geometry and HM content resolution that can be achieved from the ground magnetic survey data and its potential application in the mining grade control process.It is anticipated that the surveying of Iluka’s known resource deposits will provide the ability to correlate the magnetic response from new exploration targets with those from known deposits for a given depth, HM grade and mineralogy suite.

Early attempts at estimation of stress wave damage in blasting by use of finite element analysis met with limited success due to numerical instabilities that prevented calculations from being carried to late times. An improved damage model based on microcrack growth in tension allows finite element calculations which remain stable at late times. Estimation of crater profiles for blasting experiments in granite demonstrate successful simulations with this model.

After review of the status of research on optirnisation of retreat longwall faces it is argued that an acceptable optimisation model must be based upon realistic cost data that take into account not only the face costs, but the total panel costs. These include the cost of development, face cost, removal and installation cost. The determined optimum length of a retreat longwall face is based upon a realistic model and actual costs.Parameters that influence the optimum face length have been varied over wide limits to allow determination of the sensitivity of the model and the effect of the parameters on the optimum face length. It is concluded that for medium production rates and medium system availability, the optimum face length of a retreat longwall face under Australian conditions lies between 180 and 220 metres.

A laboratory study of size segregation is described using a model of a Paul Wurth hopper industrailly employed for blast furnace charg- ing purposes. Experimental charge materials used in the study were glass ballotin.i (1-4mm dia.) and sinter fines (0.25-4mm). The tracer material employed consisted of coloured glass beads. The results of the study show that the discharge stream from a Paul Wurth hopper is characterised by an initial negative segregation followed by a positive segregation and that this segregation pattern is a property of the hopper geometry and the filling conditions. A simple computer model based on experimental tracer concentration results is proposed. The measured segregation results and those predicted by the model show close agreement. Application of the results with special reference to the effect of size segregation on charge permeability in blast furnaces is also included.

On the first of July, 2012, the Australian GovernmentÆs Clean Energy Act commenced. From this point, a price of $23/t of CO2-e will apply to facilities that trip the liability threshold. This first part of this paper concentrates on the mechanics of the Clean Energy Future legislation and how it will be applied to the mining and mineral processing industry.The second part of this paper contains analysis of the data presented for typical mine operations. Methodologies for constructing a carbon strategy are also presented. This will entail determining what the objectives of the carbon strategy are, and defining what the strategic priorities for a business should be. An action plan to address the risks identified from the Clean Energy Act is also developed as part of the strategy.Details such as the advantages and disadvantages of opting into the carbon price scheme for liquid fuels are shown. Other considerations such as the ability to acquire permits through the carbon farming initiative or through overseas clean development mechanism projects are explained.CITATION:Allen, M and Holt, P, 2012. Over the last few years at Glencore’s Mount Isa Copper Operations (MICO) mining conditions have become increasingly challenging through lower head grades and higher work indices. MICO has had great success improving operating efficiencies and increasing productivity through focusing on technology, innovation and operational discipline. The recent implementation of the Mine Site Technologies (MST) ImPact System has supported the continued transformation of the MICO operations through improved personnel safety and direct measurement of productivity. The ImPact System has implemented new safety systems such as the heavy vehicle proximity detection system, underground personnel tracking system and emergency evacuation dashboards improving the overall safety of the workforce. The ImPact System has facilitated productivity improvements via real-time equipment and personnel monitoring, and the implementation of exception reporting (personnel productivity), KPI reports and production dashboards, and transparent reports highlighting developing maintenance issues.This paper discusses the components of the ImPact System, the current installation at MICO, and critically analyses the implementation processes and right sizing of the system to meet the needs of the business today and into the future.CITATION:Bullock, J, Kent, D and Wilkinson, M, 2017. Ballarat Goldfields Limited is currently re-opening the old workings of the East Ballarat Goldfield which contain an estimated 1800 ML of groundwater. The disposal of this 'minewater' was of concern: the minewater is of moderate salinity; increased salinity levels have interfered with agriculture and water use at a number of locations downstream from Ballarat. Extensive numerical studies indicated that treated minewater could be discharged into the Ballarat Creek system for dilution by sewage effluent and by surface runoff after rainfall events. An automatic real-time salinity management system has been developed to enable the disposal of saline minewater in this fashion. A desk top computer operates the system: discharge and salinity readings are taken automatically each hour and filed away; the maximum allowable rate of discharge of treated minewater is calculated; pumps are switched on and off. The system readily enables daily, weekly and monthly data reports together with floppy disks of 'raw' data to be prepared in formats suitable for direct submission to the Victorian Environmental Protection Authority.

In seeking to improve the economic performance of mines, the management or human aspects are usually seen to be quite seperate from, and more significant than, the technical aspects. There are obvious aspects of industrial relations, man-management, skills training and supervision that are currently the focus of efforts to improve the productivity and quality of the mining process. However technology also has a lot to offer. Analysis of the costs involved suggests that innovations leading to improvement in the productivity of the excavation and transport of overburden and the recovery of coal (both in the mine and preperation plant) can lead to improvements in the economic performance of a mine that may outstrip the obvious non-technical or management opportunities for improvement. While there are some innovations currently being investigated within the industry that relate to the design of mining equipment, the type of machinery being used in open cut mines has not changed dramatically over the last twenty five years. It is also likely that mining equipment will remain essentially of the same form in the forseeable future. If significant improvements to mining performance are to be achieved other than by futher increases in the scale of machinery, then we need to seek ways to operate these same types of machines in a more productive and controlled manner. This paper discusses the identification of mining processes the improvement of which is likely to have a significant effect on mining costs and performance. Some areas of current research are discussed and potentially fruitful areas for future development are identified.

The Fitzpatrick Orebody is a three and a half million tonne fault bounded portion of the early-middle Proterozoic Broken Hill Orebody.The Fitzpatrick Orebody was discovered in 1975 by diamond drilling from the 36 Level Exploratory Drive. This followed persistent geologically oriented exploration and a courageous decision by mine management to deepen No. 3 Shaft to provide exploratory development across the Globe Vauxhall Shear and allow effective drilling of the target area.The stratiforrn oebody consists of three lenses, the lead rich No. 2 and 3 Lenses and smaller zinc lode. They represent a down plunge extension and boudinaged, fault-bounded portion of the main Broken Hill ore lenses. The surrounding host rocks are extensively faulted and jointed due to complex history of movement on the bounding shears. This results in extremely poor ground conditions during mining. The ore was delineated for mining development using three dimensional fan drilling from exploratory and hanging wall drive drill sites.

Resolution Copper Mining LLC (RCML) is one of the largest undeveloped high-grade porphyry copper-molybdenum deposits in the world, with an orebody at depths of approximately 2000 m beneath post-mineralisation cover. With a vision to develop a large-scale, low-cost operating mine, the project is designed as a micropanel cave with an advanced undercut.In September 2014, RCML began a study focusing on identifying and selecting the best production cases to eventually reach full production (120 kt/d). To achieve this, a methodology was developed that allows the fast evaluation of a large number of production schedules.Dassault Systèmes GEOVIA was commissioned to enhance the Footprint Finder program for batch scheduling panel cave production. The tonnage and grade schedules produced by Footprint Finder were compared to schedules developed using personal computing block caving (PCBC™). The inputs to Footprint Finder were then adjusted to achieve a reasonable correlation with the PCBC™ schedules.The enhanced Footprint Finder program was used to batch-process nearly 54 000 schedules using 20 elevations, 17 shutoff grades, four heights of draw, two different copper grades (modelled and upside), two layout refinements within the existing footprint and a variety of production ramp-up rates to 120 kt/d. The study team developed processes to analyse large amounts of data, to assist in selecting a matrix of the best schedules for detailed assessment using PCBC™. Three hundred PCBC™ schedules were developed.The detailed trade-offs between the scenarios is currently underway with promising results. Brief summary of results obtained by a French-Japanese cooperative study on the bottom of trenches around Japan. The geophysical prospection, multi beam echo sounding and direct observation with submersible dives of the trench bottom clarified the details of the subduction of oceanic plates. It may be noted, among many new facts found: 1. The subduction and geologic structure resulted from the process is different according to the nature of subducting oceanic plate, and the geology of the land behind the trench. Thus the Nankai trough characterized by the developpement of accretionary prisms is contrasted to that of the Japan Trench where the basement rocks are exposed on the land side cliff of the trench wall. 2. The compressional tectonic situation prevailing in the trench bottom provokes the venting, along the fissures on the bottom, of water contained in sediments. Hydrocarbons contained in the sediments are comming out with water and give nutrients for bacteria. Clams, tube warms, sea slugs and shrimps are taking these bacteria as their food and biological communities with exceptionally dense population for the deep sea of more than 3000 meters in depth are formed on the field of accretionary prism and wall of the land side cliff. 3. An intense compressional tectonic field resulted from the subduction is inducing the transition from the subduction of oceanic plate to the collision of a part of the plate to the continental plate.

Australia has many potentially important tin deposits, particularly on the eastern shore of the continent and in Tasmania. A number of these have been worked on a meagre scale, while some of them, because of metallurgical, transport, and other difficulties, have not as yet been developed.Believing that the full development of the tin fields of the Commonwealth of Australia is in part dependent upon the adoption of the most efficient methods of milling and smelting, the Development and Migration Oommission arranged for the first-mentioned author to visit the mining fields of Cornwall, one of the oldest tin-producing districts of the world, and prepare a report for the information of the Commission.This paper, now presented to the Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy with the hope that it will assist the full development of tin mining in Australia, is the joint work of both authors.For over two thousand years tin has been produced from the Cornish mines. Even the ancient Greek historians made mention of tin mining in Cornwall, and it is probable that during the earliest periods the mining was alluvial. As early as 1602 a stamp battery working in Cornwall was described, and in 1671 calcination and buddling was a recognised scheme of treating pyritic ore. In the first half of the 16th century the output of tin from Cornwall was 700 tons per annum, and, from then on, production increased to the maximum in 1914 of 6500 tons. At present (Oct., 1929) the Cambourne-Redruth area produces over 95% of the Cornish tin output. This area includes such mines as the South Crofty, East Pool, Dolcoath, Parkanchy, Polhigey, and Wheal Kitty. The remaining 5% is largely supplied by the Levant and Geevor mines at Pendeen, St. Just area, near Land's End.

Studies by Tennent, Isokangas Pty Ltd (TIP) have indicated that underground quarrying of backfill may be a cost competitive option for providing backfill for specialised situations in underground mining. Situations where suitable bulk fill material may not be available on the surface, and where the total cost of setting up a fill distribution system are prohibitive, could favour the mining of fill material underground adjacent to the stopes being mined. Considerations include environmental impact, scheduling, surface constraints and total costs. The examples quoted in this paper, and the case studies are based on the authors' personal observations and experience.

G-Cell is a new design modification of the Imhoflot pneumatic flotation technology, which utilises a self-inducing aerator inside a downcomer, where bubble-particle attachment takes place. The present study has investigated the suitability of the G-Cell technology for cleaning fine coal using a 0.8 m diameter prototype unit at a coal preparation plant operating in the Midwestern United States. A slip-stream obtained from the overflow of raw coal cyclones operating in the plant, containing nominally minus 150 micron size particles and having ash content in the range of 40 per cent to 50 per cent and sulfur content in the range of 1.30 per cent to 1.50 per cent, has been used as the feed for the G-Cell. The performance data produced from the G-Cell tests are found to be very close to the ideal performance curves produced from release analysis. A statistically designed experimental program has been conducted to investigate the parametric effects on various key process responses, such as combustible recovery, product ash and sulfur rejection. The empirical models developed in this study have been utilised to identify a suitable experimental region for achieving a desired combination of response targets.

ADDRESS BY THE PRESIDENT OF THE INSTITUTE (MR. J. G. SYMONS) IN PRESENTING THE AWARD TO ELLIOTT SYLVESTER TIMOTHY O'DRISCOLLTim O'Driscoll comes from a mixture of Irish and Scottish stock. His family on the paternal side settled on land in Western Australia in the middle of the last century. His family on the maternal side were part of the W.A. goldfields scenc, including places such as Kanowna, and the Great Fingal mine, near Cue, where his grandfather lies buried.The combination of land and mining environments may perhaps have contributed to an innate interest in geology shared by Tim and his two brothers, all of whom became geologists.Tim showed an early liking for mathematical and geometric subjects, and in his B.Sc. studies at the University of Western Australia he took a major in mathematics along with geology in 1940.His first job was on the Kalgoorlie Golden Mile, and then at Norseman. After serving as a flying boat navigator in the north and south Pacific theatres in World War II he returned to Kalgoorlie and thence to Broken Hill.

Mine planning typically involves designing an operation to uncover coal with the minimum initial costs with reclamation planning and earthworks being done as an "add on" task. The landform is too steep to remain stable, has no drainage and frequently has areas of excessive acidity or alkalinity. Extensive earthworks are required to reduce grades to an acceptable level and create a drainage system. The flexibility available to the mining engineer to alter the post mining landscape clearly depends on the mining methods. Straight dragline stripping provides virtually no flexibility. However most mining operations over the term of current ten year plans have a substantial pre-strip component. It is this pre-strip material which has the potential to reduce the final reshaping earthworks. The reshaping operation itself is subject to some flexibility with various options being available to re-grade and provide drainage. The full utilisation of this flexibility to minimise earthworks cost should be the aim of reclamation design. ACIRL's current thrust in reclamation is aimed at the integration of mine planning and reclamation earthworks. This involves gathering all environment and agricultural criteria and designing the earth works necessary to produce an acceptable final landform. A key component of our work is the use of computer aided design (CADD) for the design of spoil piles, pre-strip dumps and spoil re-shaping. This approach has been applied to a number of mine sites with earthworks operations covering hundreds of hectares and hundreds of millions of cubic metres volume. We are continuing to provide that consultancy service and at the same time are involved in the development of more sophisticated software tools to apply to reclamation design.

The æMountain Camp reefÆ at Alford's mine, Wakamarina,Marlborough, had no recorded gold production although assays of 5 - 26 g/t were reported, but it did produce c. l000 kg of scheelite. The lode consists of a lower massive quartz layer, and upper, cm-banded, ribboned quartz layers, and has a very low sulphide content. Within the massive layer, relict early fine-grained mosaic quartz with idioblastic scheelite is surrounded by recrystallised granoblastic coarse-grained quartz with calcite and plagioclase, in which an original ribbon banding texture is mimiced by strings of tiny inclusions. In both the banded and massive layers, rounded quartz grains, created by cataclastic milling of grain margins and along syn-vein fractures, have been partially annealed within later quartz overgrowths. Late fibrous quartz and calcite fill brittle cross fractures.   Deformation events D1 and D2 are associated with mid-late Jurassic metamorphism of the Pelorus Group, D2 producing the main regional schistosity (S2, and the earliest scheelite. D3 is an extensional mylonitic shear event that formed the dominant schistosity in Alford's mine (S3). The quartz lode was emplaced within the mylonite by a series of individual dilation pulses (D4). The D5 event caused crenulation of the S3 mylonite, kink banding and chevron folding of the S2 schist and S3 mylonite, and reverse faulting, rodding and cross-fracturing with late fibrous quartz-calcite veining of the D4 quartz lode.   Fluid influxes during successive dilations of D4 fractures progressively caused recrystallisation of earlier quartz bands on the footwall, annealing and recrystallisation of quartz along milled crystal margins and fractures, and deposition of minor sulphides. There was thus a dynamic interplay between fault dilation, lode fracture, fluid influx, lode band deposition, and lode recrystallisation. A major constraint on sustaining high rates of production in the collieries of the Southern Coalfield of New South Wales is the inability to develop panels fast enough to match the rates of extraction. This inability is particularly crippling in the case of retreat longwall mining and is due to nearly half the time in roadway drivage being spent on strata control operations such as roof support.Increased rates of roadway drivage and significantly improved roadway stability can be achieved by the application of yield pillars between parallel roadways. These pillars are designed to yield immediately upon formation and transfer the damaging roof loads away from the immediate vicinity of the roadways. Since the width of the yield pillar is the key to their successful application, it was determined through the Yield Pillar Experiment conducted by Kembla Coal and Coke Pty Ltd at West Cliff Colliery.Three experimental headings, each nominally 5.5 m wide and 2.8 m high, were driven to form two tapering pillars. The width of these pillars progressively decreased from 24 m to 3 m over a length of 154 m. The convergence between the roof and floor of the headings measured at various cross-sections corresponding to predetermined widths of the pillars are analysed in this paper to evaluate the stability of the tapering pillars at the different widths.The width of the yield pillar in a three heading development layout at West Cliff Colliery was determined to be 7.5 m.

Sampling drawpoints in block cave mines has been a contentious issue for many years. Doubts have been expressed as to the validity of the process used at most mines. This paper outlines the sampling practice commonly in use, discusses the resulting issues associated with reconciliation and drawpoint closure decisions. The paper also looks to the future and highlights issues for some block cave mining operations currently planned to have in the order of one thousand active drawpoints. It is likely that these operations will require a new approach to drawpoint sampling. There are several potential technologies currently available although some appear to be better suited than others to replace the current approaches. CITATION:Ross, I T, 2012.
