The decrease in quality of Australian iron ore, coupled with the demand for more efficient energy use, necessitates closer monitoring and optimisation of process conditions for iron ore sinter production. Sinter properties are correlated with the mineralogical content and traditionally, quality control has relied on methods such as Fe2+ determination, point counting via optical microscopy and automated electron beam techniques such as QEMSCAN; these can have a typical turnaround time of several days between sampling and reporting of results. As well, there is additional uncertainty around quantifying some of the complex mineralogical phases in sinter such as silico-ferrite of calcium and aluminium (SFCA) and SFCA-I, which are key phases influencing sinter quality. There is a clear need for the implementation of alternative analytical methodologies that offer a turnaround in hours or even minutes to provide information to accurately maintain production conditions.X-ray diffraction (XRD) is a technique widely used for the quantitative mineralogical phase analysis (QPA) of ores and processed materials in the iron ore industry. Partial least squares regression (PLSR) analysis methods have recently been suggested as an indicator of sinter Fe2+ content from powder XRD data without the need for rigorous and often time-consuming mineralogical analysis by the operator. In this study we provide results from the implementation of PLSR to predict the strength of iron ore sinter. Results are sourced from a well-constrained data set comprising strength properties (as quantified by a tumble index (TI)) from a series of compact laboratory test samples. Late Cretaceous Blue Spur Conglomerate preserved as isolated remnants at Gabriels Gully, Weatherstones, Forsyth, Waitahuna Gully and Adams Flat was deposited during the intiation and early stages of extensional movement on the Tuapeka Fault zone at each locality. The deposits represent successive courses of a single fluvial system flowing across the Tuapeka Fault zone from the up-thrown (northeast) block. Each course, beginning with the channel at Gabriels Gully, was abandoned as a result of uplift-induced defeated antecedence in favour of a new course farther to the southeast around the southeast-propagating tip of the Tuapeka Fault zone. Schist and quartz in the conglomerate was derived ultimately from schistose rocks northeast of the Tuapeka Fault zone. Caples Terrane greywacke detritus in the middle and upper beds of the conglomerate was probably recycled from pre-existing sedimentary cover on the up-thrown block, following initiation of uplift on the Tuapeka Fault zone at each locality. Most of the gold is derived from vein sources in Otago Schist rocks to the north, and/or associated placers. Hydrothermal veins at Waipori, Hindon, Barewood, and Macraes are the most likely primary sources. There is no evidence to support previous interpretations of deposition by river systems flowing from the southwest, or axially along the Tuapeka Fault zone from northwest to southeast. High gold grades within Blue Spur Conglomerate should have a linear trend more or less similar to the orientation of the host channels, but are likely to drop off rapidly to the southwest. Extensions of the conglomerate-filled channels are unlikely to be preserved, but there is a strong probability that younger placers recycled from the former channels exist.

Magnetite cenospheres 40-270 I/m in diameter have been found during the combustion of pyrite concentrate.Micrographs of the surface and internal structures are presented together with comment on the mechanism of forrnation.The similarity to cenospheres found during the combustion of pulverized fuel was noted and speculation raised to their contribution to the dust and fume load in flash smelters.

Winzes are usually sunk 9 ft. 6 in. long by 6 ft. 0 in. wide and are divided into two compartments, 4 ft. 0 in. by 5 ft. 0 in. inside the timbers. The general practice is to sink the winze to a depth of from 9 to 12 ft., put in bearers and three or four rings of timber, and then erect a sinking headframe before continuing sinking operations.GENERALThe main feature governing the design of the headframe was that all parts could be transported on timber trolleys in No. 2 Shaft. Except for some minor details the structural members consist of steam pipe. Joints are sections of steam pipe welded to one member and into which the other member fits and is held in place by a 1-in. bolt. The headframe consists essentially of two bedpieces to carry the winch and to form a seat for the four legs. The legs support the sheave bearers, the tipping door and the brace.Except during tipping operations the door is in a nearly vertical position. For tipping it is lowered to an inclined position and a hook suspended from one of the bracing members of the headframe is attached to a "D" welded to the bottom of the kibble. This causes the kibble to tip when it is lowered on to the tipping door. The capacity of the kibble is 4 cubic feet.THE HEADFRAMEThe dimensions of the headframe are:Height to top of sheave .. .. 14 ft. 10 in.Distance centre to centre of legs 4 ft. 4 in.Length of bedpieces .. .. .. .. 8 ft. 9 in.The weight is approximately 2,000 lb., the tipping door and bedpieces being the heaviest members. The expansion of hydrometallurgical operations, declining ore grades and upwardly spiralling production increases the demand for fresh and recycled water with low levels of contaminants. The minerals industry is also increasingly being forced both by regulatory and cost pressures to reduce the amount of liquid waste they produce. This requires a strong focus on waste reduction by recycling, regeneration and reuse. However, these measures are often not enough in arid countries for a forward progress and expansion of their mining activities.   It is often the case that in the arid and semi-arid countries the only available water is either sea water or underground (brackish to hypersaline) saline waters. Brackish waters can be desalted at a reasonable cost but the desalination of highly saline waters is challenging and expensive.   There are emerging reports that sea water and in some cases hypersaline underground waters are now used by various mining industries as process water. This study explores the possibility of the use of sea water in various mineral processing and hydrometallurgical processes and briefly discusses the benefits and problems related to the use of saline waters at the mine and mill site. Several cases studies and preliminary laboratory test results are presented.

The action of water on a number of Queensland shales which are associated with particular coal measures and oil shales has been studied. The results suggest that the disintegration of some of the shales could cause significant problems in mining and preparation operations. The extent of shale breakdown varies widely from deposit to deposit and from seam to seam but a suitable assessment procedure utilises the test described in AS 1661-1979, and an improved method of presenting the results is described in the paper.

The mineralogy of the rocks now observed in the Nairne pyrite deposit developed under conditions of internally-controlled sulphur activity during amphibolite facies metamorphism. In the sulphide-deficient metasediments the activity of sulphur was low, and pyrrhotite developed with iron-bearing silicate minerals. At higher sulphur activity, in the sulphide-rich meta-sediments, pyrite formed in addition to pyrrhotite, and the associated silicate minerals are iron-deficient.

Up to 19 chemical parameters were studied in flotation pulps in six Australian lead-zinc concentrators with the aim of obtaining a better understanding of the nature of, and changes in, the chemical environment. This paperdiscusses pH, redox potential, and oxygen concentrations, which were all measured continuously.Two plants operated at natural pH in slightly acid circuit and one at natural pH in alkaline circuit, and pH was stable at all these plants. In two plants varying amounts of cement fill were present in mill feed and pHwas variable. At the other plant pH was controlled with soda ash and lime.Redox potentials became more positive as the pulp passed through the plant. The minimum change was 20 mV and the maximum about 250 mV. Potentials tended to be variable at any point early in the circuit, but were more stable later on. In some plants reagent additions had no noticeable effect on redox potentials. However in the two plants operating in acid circuit the redox potential of .zinc rougher feed was markedly affected by changes in copper sulphate addition rate. Sodium sulphite additions had an effect at other plants.Oxygen concentrations in grinding circuits tended to be low (30 per cent of saturation) and very variable. Flotation was usually conducted in pulps at least 90 per cent saturated with oxygen. Addition of sodium sulphite had a marked effect on oxygen content in one plant, but less effect in two others.Statistically significant relationships were found in some plants between pH and redox potential, redox potential and oxygen saturation, and oxygen saturation and pH.Improved control of copper sulphate and sodium sulphite additions could result from applications of this work.

With the employment of a system of ore pillars to support the hanging wall during the mining operations at the North Mine, it was found that, when the stopes were worked out and the pillars remained intact, the main footwall drives developed an undulating longitudinal section due to the shrinkage of the filling in the worked out stopes.These depressions collected water, which made the footwall drives very wet under foot, and everitually worked its way into the pillar workings and the levels below.Water was also finding its way into the shafts because of the silting-up of the level drainage systems and, as both the shafts are down-cast, this tended to increase the humidity of the air entering the mine.To overcome these troubles it was decided to try a system of siphons as a method of subsidiary drainage.SYSTEM AT PRESENT IN USE.All drainage water is collected as near to its source as possible, run into a sump in an adjacent low lying part of the level, and continuously removed from these sumps by a siphon system.Each level has its own system. This paper reports a biogeochemical study of the Siberia lode of the Herberton tin field. Soil near the orebody contained high levels of Fe, Cu, Pb, Sn, As, Mld Mn. Polycarpaea spirostylis and Indigofera dominii were associated with these high levels but several other species apparently could not tolerate them. The potential of these species as indicator plants is discussed.

Solid Energy is the largest coal producing company in New Zealand, employing 500 people and more than 250 mining contract personnel. The coal produced by Solid Energy plays a significant part in the energy mix for New Zealand being supplied to the coal-fired power station at Huntly. It is also supplied to a wide range of industrial users, NZ Steel, and primary processing. It is fair to say however that the positive economic and social benefits of coal have to some extent been overshadowed by the negative environmental consequences of coal mining.   Over the past two years Solid Energy have been actively researching and addressing the impacts that they currently have on the environment and making a significant investment in environmental improvements, rehabilitation projects and environmental research to address historical and ongoing environmental issues. These investments have been driven by the companyÆs commitment to its environmental policy, which states:   æSolid EnergyÆs overall environmental objective is for the cumulative result of all the activities we undertake to have a positive net effect on the New Zealand environmentÆ.   With such significant investment it is essential that the company is able to target expenditure wisely, ie invest where there is greatest environmental gain to be had, and are also able to actively demonstrate to stakeholders the improvements that are achieved. In order to be able to demonstrate the commitment and the steps that the company is making towards this goal a number of systems have been developed. Firstly an environmental management system along the lines of ISO14001 formalising the environmental processes, responsibilities, auditing and management review. Secondly as part of the planning element of the EMS an environmental management matrix, which allows the scoring of sites against environmental management goals, has been developed. Thirdly the monitoring and measuring tools have been upgraded with GIS driven relational databases installed for management of consent related information and monitoring results.   The development of the environmental management matrix has drawn on a number of existing systems such as the Australian Institute of Mining and Minerals Code 2000. In addition to adapting the scoring regimes from these methods the Solid Energy Environmental Matrix has been further developed to ensure that it reflects the actual environmental impacts on site, as well as the management and audit systems that are in place to control them at a strategic level. The development of this matrix has included a number of steps: +        reviewing the information that stakeholders would be interested in, +        reviewing what was already available, +        development of systems to collect data and benchmark the current         operations, and +        setting up support systems to ensure that the correct information would be provided for scoring.

DESCRIPTION OF OREThe ore consists, in general, of a very finely grained mixture of sphalerite, galena, and pyrite, with a gangue of quartz and schistose material, and contains about one ounce of silver to the unit of lead.Minor minerals are chalcopyrite, tetrahedrite, and ruby silver. The amount of gangue within the ore-bodies themselves is usually less than 20% of the weight of the whole. The ore is banded in a way that corresponds to the structure of the original schists, and is by no means uniform in composition-at one point, for example, blende may predominate, and a few feet farther on the body may become highly pyritic.Owing to the intimate association of the mineral constituents of the ore, it is very difficult to separate them from one another.Although this remark applies to ore from all parts of the field, the difficulty is particularly noticeable with Rosebery ore, the minerals of which are more intimately mixed, and are of smaller grain size than are the minerals of the Hercules ore.To effect a reasonably clean separation, it is necessary to grind the ore so that 90% passes a 200-mesh I.M.M. screen. Microscopic examination of the crushed product shows that 85% of the minus 200-mesh material is less than 30 microns in diameter, or, in terms of screen sizing, is minus 400 mesh. Particles under 30 microns are found to consist, of one mineral only, but in particles over this size separation has not always been effected. For instance, it is known that part of the galena and of the pyrite in the zinc concentrate is associated with sphalerite, and that part of the galena in the mill residue is associated with pyrite. There is only slight association between the minerals in the lead concentrate.

Magnetic separation is routinely used in the processing of titaniumminerals, and the efficiency of these operations can be determined bymeasuring the magnetic properties of the process streams. The valuable components in the feed to a titanium minerals plant have specific magnetic susceptibilities ranging from -10-9 m3 kg-1 (zircon) to 10-6 m3 kg-1 (ilmenite). However, in an industrial environment, in which the mineral temperature may range from 20 to 120¦C, it is difficult to measure susceptibilities lower than about 10-7 m3 kg-1. Hence laboratory testing of spot samples from magnetic separators is currently required to obtain accurate performance data. This is an inherently slow process and where feed grades are variable, optimum performance of magnetic separators is generally not achieved.This paper describes the development of an inductance-basedinstrument for measuring very low levels of magnetic susceptibilityon-line. The signal from the instrument can be used for process control purposes to maintain optimum magnetic separator performance.A prototype instrument has been installed in the zircon scavengercircuit in an Australian titanium minerals plant. The circuit consists of a roll magnetic separator treating a feed consisting mainly of monazite and stained zircon. The monazite-rich magnetic fraction is returned to the mine site for disposal, while the non-magnetic fraction is recycled to the zircon wet circuit. Splitter positions in the separator are adjusted when the final zircon product fails to meet specification, or the magnetic fraction contains more than 30 per cent zircon. Weekly composite grain counts show that sub-optimal operation of the magnetic separator results in significant zircon losses into the magnetics fraction.Using the instrument, the zircon content of this stream can now beaccurately determined from the measured magnetic susceptibility,provided a correction for the effect of mineral temperature is applied using the Curie - Weiss relationship.

THE successful establishment of iron blast-furnace plants at Newcastle and Lithgow naturally invites attention to the economic utilization of the various products and by-products arising out of the industry.The general similarity in composition between Portland cement and iron blast-furnace slag very early attracted attention both in, the cement and iron-smelting industries. Probably the first use made of blast-furnace slag in the cementindustry was not of an honourable nature-viz, to use an almost worthless and cumbersome by-product as a not readily detectable adulterant in Portland cement, which was at that time very costly to manufacture.The astonishing discovery was made that in many cases the adulterated cement was stronger than the original unadulterated article. It was found that chilled blast-furnace slag introduced in moderate quantity and finely ground with the cement clinkerdid not injure, but usually improved, the quality of the resulting cement. This mode of, manufacture is recognized, especially in Germany, as a legitimate branch of the cement making industry.The use of slag for the manufacture of both slag cement and Portland cement has assumed very large proportions heth in USA and Europe so much so that in the former country plants not well situated and equipped for cheaply making cement from clay and limestone are being forced to close down. Slags from other than iron blast-furnaces, together with some of the latter, are not suitable for cement-making. A wide-ranging base of jig data was collected from various types of commercial jigs in 9 coal preparation plants in China, and a complete data analysis was made. It was found that the sharpness ofseparation was very variable, which demonstrates the complex interplay of the many factors which influence jig performance. Tests showed that there exist optimum frequency ranges in each compartment of a jig. Stepwise regression analysis indicated that the sharpness of separation is most sensitive to the intake fraction ofthe air cycle, the frequency, and the feed rate. By means of non-linear curve fitting techniques and statistical analysis, several mathematical models were developed to describe both partition curve and the jig performance, for simulation purposes.
