This paper .reviews some of the key developments which have been made in the synthesis of the III-V compound semiconductors and the associated progress in obtaining high-quality material for device development. The history of the investigation of the semi-conducting properties of these materials has indicated the need for synthesis techniques capable of producing rnaterial of high chemical purity and physical perfection. The progress in the area is described, and the present status of quality of several compounds is discussed. In addition, recent studies of localized epitaxial deposition of GaAs into semi-insulating GaAs substvates for the development of arrays of devices ave reviewed. In conclusion, some important areas for future research and developrnent are discussed. INTEREST in III-V compounds as semiconductors dates back to the period 1950 to 1952, when Goryunova, Ioffe, and, in particular, Welker determined that 111-V compounds were structural analogs of the group IV elements carbon, silicon, germanium, and tin and that they were also semiconductors.'-3 Since that time interest in the properties of these materials has ex- panded rapidly. During 1953 and 1954, the first reports of rectification, photoconductivity, and optical absorption in these materials came from several investigators. In 1955, recombination radiation from samples of GaAs, InP, and GaSb was reported by ~raunstein .' This radiation was produced by injected minority carriers from point and large-area contacts. From 1955 to 1960, efforts increased on preparing large, pure specimens of these materials for the study of basic physical phenomena and device exploration. By 1960, materials preparation and the understanding of the physics of some of the materials had advanced to where some very interesting and potentially useful phenomena came under study. The first observation of electric-field-induced changes in the optical absorption edge (Franz -Keldysh effect) of 111-V compounds was reported for GaAs by Moss in 1961.' In 1962 the study of recombination radiation advanced rapidly. Keyes and Quist6 and Pankove and Berkey-heiser7 reported high radiative efficientices obtained from recombination, and then the first injection electroluminescent lasers in GaAs were announced by Hall ef al.,' by Nathan et al.,O and by Quist ef al.,'O and in Ga(As, P) alloys by Holonyak and Bevacqua." IN gathering material for this book, I have made extensive use of the archives of Phelps Dodge, contemporary news- papers, and a wide range of secondary sources. Two manuscripts-one on the history of Phelps Dodge by Arthur Train, Jr., and John L. Lawler, the other a biography of William E. Dodge by Richard Lowitt-have been of the greatest value. I owe a particular debt to the authors whose names I have just mentioned. I have also gathered important information and obtained revealing points of view from conversations with many people. Personal visits to the company's mines and plants added knowledge and understanding that nothing else was able to supply. I am greatly obligated to the officers of the company, especially to Mr. Louis S. Cates, chairman of the board of directors, Mr. Robert G. Page, president, Mr. George R. The behavior of particulate non-metallic materials in moving contact with smooth surfaces is of interest and concern to manufacturers and users of abrasives, of fillers, and of pigments alike. The theoretical aspects of the subject have been treated to considerable extent in the literature, and correlatic,ns are available that attempt to relate various methods of hardness determination." 2 The particle size and friability are characteristics of the abrasive that are not related to the smooth surface. The hardness, on the other hand, may be visualized as relative to that of the smooth surface. In a study of abrasive action, the role that hardness, per se, plays is a complicated one. For it is necessary to compare the "hardness" of the abrasive, usually a non-metallic, with that of the smooth surface, generally a metal. Hardness of non-metallics is defined as resistance to scratch and is almost universally described with respect to the Mohs scale.3 Minerals have been rated by Mohs numerically from the softest (talc = 1) to the hardest (diamond = 10). By definition, a mineral has a designated hardness when it is scratched by the standard that is numerically just above it on the scale; and conversely, when it scratches the standard that is just below it. Hardness of metals. however.. implies resistance to indentation, a property that has been measured by a number of methods. In fact, the indentation hardnesses of the standard minerals on the hlohs scale have been determined by the Rockwell tester. Reproduced below are two versions of this correlation. 'A conversion chart, prepared by Wilson Mechanical Instruments Division of American Chain and Cable Co., merely gives the conversion from Rockwell to Knoop hardness. The relation between Knoop indentation hardness and Mohs scale has been reported by G. S. Smith — A New Scale of Hardness, The Engineer, Aug. 26. 1949. G. F. Kinney in Engineerin Properties and Aplications of Plastics reports the Rockwell hardness of the minerals directly in the Mohs scale. The question immediately arises as to whether this relation is valid when applied in reverse; namely,

The plans for the activities of the Petroleum Division for the coming year do not differ materially from those of the past several years. The fall meeting is scheduled for Oct. 12 and 13 and is to be held at Tulsa, Oklahoma. The Division, of course, will take part in the annual meeting of the Institute at New York. A fall meeting will also be held in California at approximately the same time as the meeting at Tulsa. A number of papers are to be presented at the two meetings simultaneously. The various committees are at work arranging the programs. The Division will continue to be active in its various fields of endeavor, such as stabilization, production reviews, and economics, but special stress is to be laid on the engineering and research fields. In the past the Division has served as a forum for open and frank discussion of problems confronting the engineers in the oil industry. It is hoped that it will continue to function in this capacity. Papers presenting original ideas and extending the boundaries of knowledge and understanding in the field of petroleum production will be welcomed. Members who have interesting information to contribute should not wait until called upon by one of the Committees, but should offer a paper at the earliest opportunity. The past year has seen a decided strengthening of the control over production, with prospects of even more rigid control in the future. It is essential that production programs under such control be carefully planned and it is highly desirable that petroleum engineers take an active part in the planning, to insure efficient production of oil and minimize the waste of this natural resource. At a time like this, when it is difficult to keep the production of oil within reasonable limits, it may seem unnecessary to improve the efficiency of production methods, but, as has been aptly said, the trouble is not that we have too great a reserve of oil but that we are producing tomorrow's oil today. Therefore it behooves those who are entrusted with the engineering and scientific phases of production to learn how to get the greatest yield economically possible from the present and future fields in order that we may enjoy the advantages of petroleum products for a long time to come.

In recent investigations,1,2 the strength and thermal stability of dislocation substructures prepared by 5 to 25 pct room temperature tensile straining and recovery annealing at 120°, 160°, and 200°C have been studied in randomly oriented polycrystalline high purity aluminum. The techniques of transmission electron microscopy revealed that a major source of the strength and stability of dislocation substructures was the formation, during room temperature straining, of well-defined cells bounded by dislocation tangles which rearranged into nearly perfect dislocation networks during recovery, forming the boundaries of subgrains. The strength of such substructures increases with decreasing cell or subgrain size,2"6 and the formation of fine subgrain structures can provide thermally metastable strength at low temperatures and can favorably alter the course of primary creep at elevated temperatures.7'8 For maximum benefit, however, sub-grain growth should be reduced or eliminated. It was, therefore, decided to investigate the use of heterogeneous precipitation on dislocation networks as a means of imparting increased strength and thermal stability to subgrain structures through effective pinning. THE 131st meeting of the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers was held in New York on Feb. 16 to 20, 1925, with the largest registration of any previous meeting, the total being 1320 compared to 1276 in 1924. The technical sessions were more largely attended and aroused more discussion than ever before. There were joint meetings with the Mining Section of the National Safety Council, under the auspices of the Industrial Relations Committee of the Institute and two very important lectures, the Howe Memorial Lecture, under the auspices of the Iron and Steel Committee, and the lecture by Dr. Carl Benedicks, of Sweden, on Corrosion, under the auspices of the Institute of Metals Division. The Petroleum Division conducted its annual Symposium on Oil which will be published later in book form. At the annual business meeting on Feb. 17, the following ticket was elected, and the reports of the President, Treasurer, and Secretary 'were presented:

The diffusion coefficients of silver from solid silver in molten lead were measured to within ± 0.8 pet in a columnar type diffusion cell ower, the temperature range of 326° to 530°C. Fick's law describes the process up to 530°C where the laminar mechanism appareltly breaks down. These is negligible resistance at the interface as shown by mathematical analyses. The diffusion coefficients are found concentration independent. IT would seem that diffusion in liquid metals would be free of such effects as molecular structure, dissociation. polarization. and compound formation. This view was taken by Gorman and preckshot in their study of diffusion of copper from solid copper into molten lead. They reported diffusion coefficients which were independent of the concentration over the range of 478° to 750°C. They found that the Stokes-Einstein equation with constant radius of the diffusing specie represented the diffusion data better than Eyring's rate theory equation and Sheibel's correlation. The radius of diffusion was found to be that of the doubly charged copper. There appeared to be no resistance across the solid-liquid boundary. In the present work the diffusion coefficients for silver in liquid lead were measured over a range of temperatures of 350° to 505°C. The solubility of silver in lead over the range of 303° to 630°C was also obtained. These results are compared with calculated or correlated values or with data in the literature. EXPERIMENTAL Procedure—The experimental equipment techniques and procedures were those reported in detail by Gorman and preckshot9 and will not be repeated here. Measured values of WT, Co, A. L were obtained for various diffusion times and the diffusion coefficient was computed for the case of no resistance at the interface9, 11 by: WT/CoAL = 1- 8/p2 n=1 1/(2n - 1)2 exp[-(2n - 1)2p2 Dt/4L2] [1] or where there was resistance at the interface by: WT = 1- ?n=1 2h2/ap2L [sxp [-Dan2t]/[(h2 + an2) L + h] The roots an are those of the transcendental equation3 tan (an L) = Iz/cun. The diffusion coefficient is that defined by Hartley and Crank.7 The total silver in the lead cylinder and equilibrium slug was determined by a cupellation technique' with proper correction for losses. Analysis of known samples showed that this method is surprisingly accurate. The amount of silver in the lead adhering to the silver cylinder was obtained in the same fashion as shown by Gorman and preckshot.9 The small errors involved in this determination are not critical since the silver in this adhering lead layer is only 3 to 15 pet of the total diffused. Materials—Electrolytic silver containing 99.9+ pet Ag obtained from General Refineries of Minneapolis, Minn. was used for all but runs 7 and 8. For the balance of the runs this silver was reduced with hydrogen at 1100°C and its oxygen content was found to be about 0.017 pet. For the runs. 7 and 8, phosphorous-reduced silver of the same purity was obtained from Handy and Harman Co. of Chicago, Ill. The densities of the phosphorus-reduced silver and the hydrogen-reduced electrolytic silver were 10.484 and 10.487 g per cm3, respectively. These values agree with those reported for pure silver. Silver which was reduced at 900 C had an average density of 9.998 g per cm3, indicating porosity. This silver was used for a number of runs which were not tabulated in Table I. These are indicated by crosses on Fig. 2. The 99.999 pet Pb was obtained from the National Lead Co. Research Laboratory of Brooklyn, New York. DISCUSSION OF RESULTS The diffusion and solubility results are reported in Table I for eleven runs using either phosphorus-reduced electrolytic silver or hydrogen-reduced silver at 1100° C. The solubility data shown in Fig. 1 show the excellent agreement with that reported by Heycock and Neville.8 The data of Friedrichs5 apparently are in error. The experimental solubility data of this work are reported to 0.3 pet. The experimental diffusion coefficients computed from Eq. [1] are reported within 1.2 pet of the mean and are plotted in Fig. 2. These are expressed within +0.8 pet of the experimental values over the entire temperature range by: D= 8.26 x 10 -5 e-1925/RT . [3] There appears to be little difference due to the

At Ithaca Peak, one of three peaks situated on Duval Corporation's Mineral Park property, a 'Single pulse of quartz monzonite magma intruded the isoclinally folded Precambrian Cerbat complex consisting of schist, quartzfeldspar gneiss, and amphibolite. The magma reacted with the Precambrian rocks, yielding a quartz-diorite rim. As the magma crystallized within the rim, it produced, progressing in'ward, annular bodies of quartz monzonite porphyry, quartz porphyry, and a distinctive quartz porphyry containing abundant podiform, tabular, and irregular quartz masses. These quartz masses are spatially associated with discontinuous crenulate and tabular quartz veinlets. Following crystallization, the Ithaca Peak stock and part of the surrounding Cerbat complex were fractured, producing a stockwork of predominantly northwest and northeast-trending fractures. The stockwork was then mineralized during a period of decreasing temperature by: ( 1) quartz-pyritechalcopyrite veinlets without distinct selvages and with distinct alteration envelopes in which orthoclase was altered to quartz and sericite; (2) quartz-pyrite-chalcopyrite veins and veinlets with distinct selvages and without distinct alteration envelopes; and (3) pyrite-chalcopyrite- galena-sphalerite veins. The Ithaca Peak stock was pervasively sericitized or argillized. The Mineral Park property is surrounded by a zone of propylitization Alteration and mineralization are coextensive in space and were, at least in part, coincident in time. The Mineral Park property possibly was elevated and exposed twice prior to its present exposure. The protore has been enriched by a factor of three. The Ithaca Peak supergene ore body is conformable with present topography and lies above the present water table. The shape of the ore body was controlled by erosion and oxidation of the previously enriched mineralization. Hematite, goethite, and jarosite present at the surface indicate a high primary pyrite environment, but it is possible to recognize that a small proportion of veins and veinlets contained greater amounts of chalcocite and chalcopyrite than pyrite. The igneous facies on Ithaca Peak are the products of differentiation within a solidifying rim according to Bowen's Reaction series. The innermost facies contain more quartz and orthoclase than the outer facies. Late magmatic quartz in the case of Ithaca Peak contains small amounts of pyrite and molybdenite. It is suggested that this quartz-sulfide mineralization, may also have been the product of differentiation the product of differentiation, may indicate that the later hydrothermal mineralization may also have been the product of differentiation.

The Candelaria deposit was first discovered by Spanish prospectors in 1863; but its silver ore was not exploited on a large scale until 1873, when the Northern Belle mine was opened. The first Northern Belle mill was built at Belleville, 13 km (8 miles) to the northwest. From 1876 to 1886 the Northern Belle paid over $1 million in dividends each year. In 1882 a 43 km (27 miles) pipeline was built to Candelaria from the White Mountains to the west to furnish water for the mills and town at Candelaria; it was 100 mm (4 in.) in diameter, hand- riveted, and made in England. Sections of this pipe are used. as claim posts today. At its terminus at Metallic City, above Candelaria, a large concrete reservoir was built and called Metallic Lake. It is being used today by Candelaria Partners. Production at Candelaria declined after the mid-1980s, revived for a short period in the early 1890s, and during the 1920s a 300 ton mill operated for three years. Candelaria Partners is owned jointly by Occidental Minerals and Congdon and Carey, with Occidental being the operator. An engineering study done in mid-1979 resulted in engineering for the plant commencing in late that year and heap leaching being started in September 1980. Two million tons of ore per year containing 108 g Ag and 0.28 g Au per mt (3.15 oz Ag and 0.008 oz Au per st) will be mined from the Lucky Hill and Mount Diablo .areas about 1.6 km (1 mile) up Pickhandle gulch from the heap leaching operation. Waste -to -ore ratio is about 2:l. Ore is mined by front-end loaders and hauled by 85 ton trucks to the primary crusher, a 1,070 by 1,780 mm (42 by 70 in. ) gyratory. Primary crushed ore is conveyed to a stockpile of 10,000 tons live capacity from which it is reclaimed by hydraulic reciprocating feeders and conveyed to the crushing and agglomeration facility. This unit is composed of a 1.8 m by 2.6. m (6 ft by 12 ft) double deck screen, a 2.1 m (7 ft) standard cone crusher, and three conveyors. At the conveyor transfer points NaOH and NaCN solution is sprayed on the ore as it falls through a row of 75 mm (3 in.) hanging steel bars. During this process of turning and dividing the ore, the fines agglomerate with the coarse ore to give better percolation for the leach solution on the heaps. Provision was made for the later addition of 2 kg per mt (4 lb per st) of cement to aid in the agglomeration. Agglomerated ore at minus 50 mm (2 in.) size is then conveyed to a 390 mt (430 st) loadout bin where it is transferred to 85 ton rear dump trucks for haulage to the leach pads.

IN reviewing the design of the ore haulage system for the Morenci project, the reader should bear in mind that the railroad and its equpiment cannot be considered as an independent railroad provided only for the purpose of transporting ore from one point to another, but as an integral part of the operation which begins at the electric shovels loading ore at the mine, and ends where the ore, after having been crushed in the primary crushing plant, is deposited in the bins at the secondary crushing plant. Obviously then, the problem consisted of designing a system that would function to the best possible advantage in complete co-ordination with the other units.

IN accordance with a programme arranged by a committee of the Institute, consisting of Mr. William P. Shinn, of St. Louis, chairman, and Mr. Joseph D. Weeks, of Pittsburgh, secretary, the member's of the Institute, with their ladies and invited guests, assembled in Chicago on Sunday morning, August 22d. A special train, provided by the Chicago and Northwestern Railway,. left Chicago on Monday morning at 7.50 o'clock, and conveyed the party to Marquette, arriving at 9 o'clock P.M. Here the steamer Northern Queen, which had been chartered by the committee for the accommodation of the Institute, was in waiting, and the members and ladies at once took up their quarters on the boat. On Tuesday the iron mines in the vicinity of Negaunee and Ishpeming were visited, transportation being provided by special trains on the Marquette, Houghton and Ontonagon Railroad. In the morning the McComber, South Jackson, and Jackson mines were inspected, and in the afternoon the Cleveland, New York, Lake Superior, and Barnum mines. Dinner was provided at Negaunee, and gracefully served by, the ladies of the town. In the evening the first session of the Institute was held in the saloon of the steamer. The President, William P. Shinn, of St. Louis, congratulated the Institute on the happy consummation of the wishes of its members to have a meeting on Lake Superior. Concentrating mixed sulfide-oxide copper ores by the leach-precipitation-flotation method is an old operation at the Miami Copper Co. The idea was conceived and the method developed at Miami by F. W. Maclennan and Harmon Keyes during the years 1929 to 1934, and it was these men who gave the term LPF to this process. Miami at that time had considerable reserves of mixed sulfide-oxide ore.* In the development of a suitable treatment method, it was natural that leaching of the oxides with acid and the precipita¬tion of copper from the resulting copper sulfate solution by iron was investigated. The MANUFACTURE of Iron in the PROVINCE of Quebec. The St. Maurice Forges.—The deposits of iron-ore in the St. Maurice district, in the rear of Three Rivers, were probably known to the Indians and .Jesuits, but it is not till 1667 that any discovery is reported. The affairs of the colony were then in the control of the " West India Company," who amongst other monopolies had a right to all mines and minerals." Specimens of the iron-ore were examined in Quebec. in 1668 by the Sieur la Potardière, who reported unfavorably on them. In 1671, Louis de Buade, Comte de Frontenac, was appointed governor of La Nouvelle France ; and in the original manuscripts relating to his administration some allusion is occasionally found to the St. Maurice iron mines.? In a letter to the Imperial Government, dated 2d November, 1672, he says: "The iron mine of which I have already spoken is of great consequence. I have visited it myself, in order that I may be enabled to give a more accurate account of its nature. Out of the depths of each business cycle we emerge with a stimulus for greater efficiency and a realization of progress in industrial technique. The recent years have not been an exception to this rule, and in retrospect we sense that significant advances have been made in mining practices on the Mesabi Range, with emphasis on speed of production and economy of operation. A survey of such changes does not reveal anything that is fundamentally or basically new, but it is apparent that ideas and machines that have found wide application in industry elsewhere, with necessary modifications, are being put to productive use in mining iron ore. Innovations in transporting and conveying ore from the open pits stand out with greatest prominence, so that, in the main, it will be with these features that this paper will treat, in the review of progress made to this date. The late years have witnessed the development of small deposits for open-pit operation, the cleaning up of pits nearing exhaustion, and in two large operations the approach to the limit for haulage by steam locomotives, owing to grades, making it necessary to recover the ore in slopes, track benches and below the power-shovel limit by a milling and scram operation. For several years small standard-type dump trucks have been used in clean-up or scram operations within the pits, but during the season of 1936 the first effort was made to use heavy truck haulage in the transportation of stripping and iron ore. The new units in use today vary from 15 to 20 tons in capacity, and are equipped with powerful gasoline or Diesel engines and supplemented by trailers or wagons on rubber or crawler treads. The Diesel engine finds favor with most operators because of fuel economy. These units develop upward of 125 hp. in the 15-ton trucks. The speed of these trucks varies from 2 miles per hour in Pow gear to 35 in high gear. The transmission affords 12 speeds forward and 3 speeds in reverse.

THE influence of mineral production on the development of the western United States has been profound. From 1848 to 1860, there was only gold production, the effect of silver began in 1860, and from then on both had a powerful influence. Lead production started in 1863, copper in 1863, and zinc in 1885, but was small until 1898. Gold alone was therefore the stimulus of the early settlement and exploration of the Western States.. But mineral deposits caused neither acquisition of territory nor determination of boundary lines. Arizona, California, Nevada, New Mexico, and parts of Utah, Wyoming, and Colorado were formally acquired from Mexico fourteen days after the actual date of the discovery (January 19, 1848)1.2 of gold at Sutters Mill, near the present town of Coloma, California (a discovery which, with the immediate new discoveries, aroused the world several months later) ; but the acquisition was by treaty (under negotiation for some time but signed February 2, 1848)3 in settlement of a war involving the boundaries of the grassy plains of Texas, an area at that time not known to contain any metals, and to date found to have but few metal deposits.4 The international boundary at 49º latitude for the far northwest states was determined by causes other than mineral deposits.
