(Canal Zone Meeting, November, 19]0.) THE sudden decease, April 1, 1910, in Chicago, of Dr. Franklin R. Carpenter was a shock to his- many friends. He died in his sixty-second year, of heart paralysis. To most fellow-members of the Institute who have followed the progress of the. last twenty-five years in the mining and treatment of non-ferrous ores, the work of Dr. Carpenter in that line is familiar ; but very few, even of those who knew him well in the later years, are acquainted with his earlier struggles to satisfy an inborn hunger for knowledge. The story of his life resembles that of the pioneer who opens up new country; overcoming hardships with indomitable courage, meeting doubts and difficulties with an alert and open mind, and exercising in the face of reverses an unconquerable perseverance. It seems appropriate to place on record in the Transactions a brief outline of the life and work of this eminent engineer. During the past 15 years of his life Dr. Carpenter was much interested in genealogy. In the pursuit of this study as an avocation, he traced his own ancestry to the time when ?Hugh," called "le Charpentier" on account of the dexterity with which he had swung his battle-axe as a crusader, settled in Sussex on lands received from William the Conqueror. The Carpenters came to this country with William Penn. A prominent member of the family was Joshua Carpenter, the founder of Christ Church, Philadelphia. Dr. Carpenter's branch of -the family moved from Pennsylvania into that part of Virginia which is now West Virginia, where his grandfather settled in Harrison county, while the grand-uncle went further west, and built the first iron-furnace at Hanging Rock, Lawrence county, Ohio. Strong's equation for calculating bottom-hole pressure reduction due to gas cutting of drilling mud is corrected, resulting in a simpler equation which is easier to use. Use of the equation is illustrated by examples. It is shown that reduction of weight of a 10 lb/gal mud by 50 per cent at the surface due to gas cutting produces only n 3 per cent decrease in hydrostatic head at the bottom of a 5,000-ft well. It is also shown that at the surface 5 volumes of air per volume of mud are required to reduce the apparent mud weight from 8.5 to 6.5 lh/gal in a 3,000-ft well. Illustrative graphs are included to show the effect of various degrees of gas cutting on apparent mud weight at depths of 2,000, .5,000 and 10,000 ft and to show variation of apparent mud weight, with depth for a 100 lb/cu ft (13.37 lb/gal) mud gas cut to 90 lb/cu ft (12.03 lb/gal) at the surface. INTRODUCTION In 1938, Strong' published the following equation for calculating reduction in bottom-hole pressure due to gas cutting of drilling mud h = 1/D [p + pn/100 In p + p(1-n/100)/p(1- n-100)] where: h = depth in feet P = pressure in atmospheres at depth h due to mud column only D = hydrostatic pressure in atmospheres of a col-umn of uncut mud 1 ft high p = back pressure at well-head (in atmospheres) n/100 = fraction by volume of gas in mud at well-head at back pres-sure p This equation was recently found to contain an error due to an incor-rect expression for variation of vol-ume fraction of gas with pressure. Values calculated by the original equation are close to the correct values for small percentages of gas for which it was derived but become increasingly erroneous as the gas content increases and are completely unusable at the very high gas con-tents employed in aerated mud. DERIVATION The nomenclature used is the same as in Strong's paper. The pres-sure dP exerted by a lamina of thickness dh at a depth h ft is ex-pressed by Eq. 1 where x = volume fraction of gas at depth h dP = D (l - x)dh . . . (1) When we express x in terms of the wellhead per cent gas n, the well-head pressure p and the pressure P at depth h, the result is Eq. 2. x = (np/p+p)/(100-n) + (np/P + p) When this is substituted in Eq. 1 and rearranged to separate the var-iables the result is dh = 1/D [dp + np/100-n dp/(P + p]. Integration between appropriate lim-its results in or if the wellhead is open so that p = 1 atm and we rearrange Eq. 4, the result is loss in head = hD — P = n/100-n In (P + 1) ...(5) Eq. 5 can be solved easily by successive approximation using hD as a first approximation for P on the right-hand side and calculating a first value for loss in head. This can then be used to get a new value of P using the left-hand side of the equation. Values converge very rap-idly even for quite large values of per cent by volume gas n. EXAMPLES The effect on bottom-hole pressure of 50 per cent gas cutting of the mud in a 5,000-ft well using 10 Ib/ gal mud will be calculated, we have: h = 5,000 ft 10 X 7.48 144 X 14.7 = 0.0353 atm/ft hD = 176.5 atm n = 50 Substituting these values in Eq. 5 and using hD as a first approxima-tion of P on the right, we have, approximate loss in head = 50/50 In (176.5 + 1) = 2.30 log 177.5 = 5.17 atm. OPERATION of a pilot mill of 100 tons' daily capacity during 1930 and 1931 proved that the copper minerals of the Colorado and Clay sections of the Morenci ore body could be successfully concentrated by the flotation process. Economic conditions caused postponement of further testing work until late in 1938 when the former No. 6 Concentrator at Morenci was converted into an experimental mill of 1500 tons' daily capacity which was known as the Test Concentrator. The Test Concentrator began continuous operation on April 3. 1939, using such crushing and grinding equipment of the No. 6 Concentrator as was appropriate. Modern classifiers and certain flotation machines were installed and later other types of flotation machines, a large grate-type grinding mill. mechanical screens, a short-head cone crusher, and a disk filter were added to the test equipment. Operation was uninterrupted until Dec. 31, 1941.

NO important changes in metallurgical practice are exhibited in the smelter that has been erected for treating the Morenci concentrate: the material is charged to reverberatory furnaces without roasting, and the matte subsequently blown in Peirce-Smith converters to separate the iron and sulphur from the copper. In fact the process is essentially the same, except for preliminary roasting of the concentrate, that was adopted in the new smelter that was built for the Arizona Copper Co. at Clifton, a few miles away, to treat Morenci concentrate just before the start of the first World War, and which went into service in October, 1913.

IN THE early summer of 1917, it became evident that the then existing sources of supply of guns and gun forgings were totally inadequate for the enormous and rapidly growing requirements of the Ordnance Department of the Army, so arrangements were made with sixteen makers of other products to take up the manufacture of guns and gun forgings. Nine of these makers were required to produce their own steel from the raw materials and convert it into rough machined gun forgings; the others finished and assembled these forgings into completed guns. In December, 1914, four of these makers of steel and rough gun forgings were instructed to manufacture the same amount of the 6-in. and 9.5-in. guns and howitzers. It, therefore, seemed practical .and profitable to assemble these makers into a small group, together with the officers of the Ordnance Department, and provide standard 'equipment in each of the four works for the production of these two types of guns. The advantages of this cooperation were immediately manifested, and there commenced an interchange of shop practice and a free discussion of facilities and methods that covered not only the equipment but the manufacturing processes.

Wright of Chicago, former Director of the Institute, as chairman. Functioning as consultants to the Geology and Mineral Industries branch of this new institution, the advisory committee is aiding in building an exhibit which will tell the story of geology, mining, and metallurgy to millions of visitors a year. The Ti-Ni phase diagram has been investigated up to 68 pct Ni with iodide titanium base alloys by metallographic, X-ray, and melting point methods, and from 68 to 90 pct Ni by examination of as-cast structures of sponge titanium base alloys. NVESTIGATION of the nickel-rich portion of the I Ti-Ni phase diagram was first reported by Vogel and Wallbaum in 1938.' This work was subsequently extended to lower nickel contents by Wallbaum' who indicated the possibility of a eutectic reaction for nickel contents below 38 pct. Long et al.3 studied the titanium-rich portion of the phase diagram and found eutectic and eutectoid reactions below 38 pct Ni. However, the temperature of the eutectic indicated by Long et al. was considerably lower than that suggested by Wallbaum. Long and his coworkers synthesized their alloys by powder metallurgical techniques and encountered oxygen and/or nitrogen contamination. Thus the diagram which was obtained did not represent binary alloying conditions. However from these results the features of the binary diagram were predicted. At Battelle Memorial Institute4 the Ti-Ni diagram was investigated up to approximately 11.5 pct Ni with sponge titanium alloys. The range of temperatures used was not sufficient to define the eutectoid temperature or composition. The data of Wallbaum2 and Long et al.8 were of particular interest for the present study, and although the work was originally concerned with the region below 40 pct Ni, the investigation was extended to higher nickel contents in an attempt to resolve the differences between these workers. Experimental Procedure Preliminary work on the Ti-Ni system was carried out with duPont Process A sponge titanium alloys to reduce the amount of subsequent work to be done with iodide titanium base alloys. The sponge titanium used contained 99.71 to 99.77 pct Ti, 0.1 pct Fe and 0.005 to 0.009 pct Ni. The iodide titanium obtained from the New Jersey Zinc Co. contained 99.9 to 99.95 pct Ti. Nickel used with sponge titanium was 98.9 pct pure. The high-purity nickel alloyed with iodide titanium was cobalt-free with approximately 0.05 pct C and was obtained through the courtesy of the International Nickel Co. The 15 g sponge titanium charges for melting were prepared by compacting in a die or by placing the weighed portions of nickel and titanium directly into the furnace. Iodide titanium charges were made by drilling holes in the as-received rod and inserting the nickel or by wrapping the nickel in sheet. Sponge titanium alloys containing from 0.2 to 90 pct Ni and iodide titanium alloys containing 0.2 to 68 pct Ni were prepared by these methods. In addition to these alloys several 1/2 1b sponge titanium alloys were supplied by the Allegheny Ludlum Co. The charges were melted in an arc furnace under an argon atmosphere. The procedures used were similar to those reported in the literature5,' and the furnace has been described.' Except for iodide titanium alloys with 40 to 68 pct Ni (see section on copper contamination), each alloy was melted for 1 min, then either turned over or broken before re-melting for an additional minute. Currents of 200 to 400 amp were used depending on the melting point of the alloy. Prior to heat treatment, alloys containing less than 14.5 pct Ni were hot-forged at 750°C. With the exception of alloys in the homogeneity range of the compound TiNi, alloys of higher nickel contents could not be hot-forged. Heat treatment of iodide titanium base alloys was carried out in argon-filled quartz capsules which were broken under water at the conclusion of heat treatment to quench the specimens. Temperatures were controlled to ±5oC and annealing times up to 48 hr were used. For melting point determination, specimens were placed in carbon crucibles which were in turn en-capsuled in argon-filled quartz capsules. The start of melting was determined by rounding of corners and by metallographic examination. Complete melting was considered to have occurred at that temperature at which the specimen assumed the shape of the crucible. Specimens were prepared for metallographic examination by mechanical polishing or by an electrolytic procedure." For alloys containing up to 80 pct Ni Remington A etch7 50 pct glycerine, 25 pct HNO,, 25 8 HF) was used. For higher nickel alloys aqua regia and Carapella's etch (5 g FeCl,, 2 ml HNO,, and 99 ml methyl alcohol) were employed. THE Tri-State district, named from its situation in three States, lies in the northeast corner of Oklahoma, the southeast corner of Kansas and the adjacent part of Missouri east of the common corner of the above States. Production in the past eighty years has come from scattered mines within an area of some 35 miles east and west, by 25 miles north and south, although the actual area of the mined ground is but a small fraction of this territory. The land is leased from the individual land-owners, and the size of the tracts varies from 4.0 to 200 acres, the smaller sized tracts predominating. The leases usually call for a royalty of 7% to 15 per cent of the gross receipts of the concentrates, continuous operation during the life of the lease and specifically set out that no ores can be brought in from a foreign lease for custom milling nor can any ore be removed from the lease for milling. The ownership of the tailings remains with the land-owner.

THE United States Smelting Refining and Mining Company maintains an ore-purchasing department for procurement of custom tonnages of milling and smelting ores and concentrates for treatment at its Midvale plant. Arrangements with other companies provide for treatment of Company and custom zinc concentrates. Location of the Midvale plant in the heart of the Western mining country makes it possible to serve shippers from these nine producing states: Arizona, California, Colorado, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, Oregon, Utah, and Washington. Shipments from most of these states travel over main-line railroads, delivery being made at Midvale within a short time after billing of the shipment. Nearly 75 per cent of the total coke production in the United States in 1940 was consumed in blast furnaces. In 1939 the percentage was 69.9, and in 1938 it was 61.3. To produce a net ton of pig iron 1757 lb. of coke was required in 1940 and 1760 lb. in 1939. These figures indicate how dependent the production of pig iron is upon the production of coke. The rate of iron production is in some measure influenced by the physical and chemical characteristics of the coke. Blast-furnace operators believe that the physical properties of coke profoundly influence the operation of the furnace. Although it is true that coke of a wide variety of physical properties is used in American blast furnaces, the periodic fluctuation of these properties is one of the causes of irregularity of blast-furnace operation. The purpose of this paper is to present a broad picture of the physical properties of by-product coke that are generally considered to be important by coke-oven and blast-furnace operators. Effects of the kind of coal used, the preparation of the coal, the rate of coking, and other factors will be considered. Of all these variables, the kind of coal used is by far the most important. In this discussion use will be made of the method of coal classification by rank' standardized by the American Society for Testing Materials. Although this method of classification has been an American stand¬ard for several years, it has not been given the attention it deserves, especially in connection with the selection of coal for production of coke. Despite the fact that many producers of blast-furnace coke are limited to some particular source or sources of coal, a good understanding of the principles involved in setting up the standard method of classification may lead to a better appreciation of the causes of changes in coke characteristics. Furthermore, where it is necessary to select new coals as a substitute for the original supply, this method of classification can be of great assistance. The data presented have been gathered from many sources, but no attempt has been made to cover the vast literature. Instead, some of the more important data have been selected to show how coals and their carbonization affect some of the physical properties of coke. It must be emphasized that generalizations concerning the behavior of coking coals are presented and that individual coals may vary widely from the specific behavior depicted. Nevertheless, it is believed that the data illustrate certain typical behaviors. Neither was it possible to cover completely all the factors involved; for example, the macroscopic constituents of coal are believed to have important effects on the physical properties of coke, but since there is little information available for such study, and since vitrain, clarain, and durain are neither

This paper is the nineteenth of a series from the Aluminum Research Laboratories, presenting the results of the investigations of equilibrium relations in aluminum-base alloys made from electrolytically refined aluminum. In previous papers equilibrium relations have been determined and correlated for 12 binary systems. Equilibrium relations have also been determined for portions of the aluminum corners of three ternary systems (aluminum-iron-silicon, aluminum-magnesium-silicon and aluminum-copper-magnesium). The object of the present paper and those to follow is to increase our knowledge of the aluminum corner of the more important ternary systems. In 1926 Dix and Keith † suggested a new method for designating the phases encountered in alloy systems. The system has been used to a very limited extentl,2,3 The system has since been slightly modified and will be used in this and future papers. In the system as modified, a phase is designated by placing in parentheses the chemical symbols of the elements essential to the formation of that phase. The symbols in the parentheses are separated by dashes in order to clearly distinguish them from a chemical formula. Elements that are not necessary to the formation of the phase in question, but which may be present in solid solution, are not indicated in the designation. If two or more phases would have the same designation according to these rules, they are distinguished by prefixing Greek letters, and are definitely identified by X-ray diffraction patterns. Previous Investigations The solid solubility of magnesium in aluminum has been well established by the work of Dix and Keller4, Schmid and Siebe15, and Saldau and Sergeev6. There is no agreement as to the composition of the magnesium constituents at the aluminum end of the binary aluminum-magnesium system. Hanson and Gayler7 report Mg2Al3; Boyer8 found that the alloy

Wollastonite, named after William H. Wollaston, an English chemist, is a calcium metasilicate, CaSiO3; CaO: 48.30%, SiO2: 51.70%. It has a short history as an industrial mineral. The earliest production of wollastonite is reported to be from a deposit near Code Siding, located north of Randsburg, CA. At this locality small tonnages of wollastonite were quarried during 1933-34 and 1938-41, and processed into mineral wool. This operation was largely experimental and virtually no United States production was again reported until the 1950s when a large deposit near Willsboro, NY, was developed by the Cabot Corp. A processing plant was placed onstream in 1953, with nearly continuous production to date. It is currently operated by NYCO, a division of Processed Minerals, Inc. Since 1958, wollastonite deposits in the Little and Big Maria Mountains of Riverside County, and in the Panamint Range of Inyo County, both in California, have operated intermittently for production of both ornamental and commercial wollastonite. During 1980, the United States was the major producing country, furnishing about 75% of the world's output. Current production comes from Finland, Mexico, India, and Kenya. Small amounts have been shipped intermittently from the USSR, New Zealand, Republic of the Sudan, Republic of South Africa, and Namibia (South-West Africa). The principal use of wollastonite is in the manufacture of plastics. Other uses are for paints, ceramics, adhesives, fluxes, glazes, thermal insulation board, and refractory products. Mineralogy Pure wollastonite, CaSiO3, has the composition of 48.3% CaO and 51.7% SiO2. However, it is seldom found in the pure state due to the ease with which it takes into solution the metasilicates of manganese, magnesium, iron, and strontium. Predominantly, wollastonite occurs as a contact metamorphic deposit forming between limestones and igneous rocks. Commonly associated minerals are garnet, diopside, epidote, calcite, and quartz. It has a specific gravity of 2.8 to 3.0, and hardness of 4.5 to 5 on Mohs' scale. When pure, it has a brilliant white color, but with impurities it may be grayish or brownish. Luster is vitreous to pearly. Melting point of wollastonite is about 1540ºC. Wollastonite occurs in coarse-bladed masses, rarely showing good crystal form. It is usually acicular or fibrous, even in the smallest of particles. The most unique property of crushed and ground wollastonite is its cleavage. Fragments of crushed wollastonite tend to be needle-shaped, imparting a high strength, and this property is the basis for many of its uses. The fiber lengths are commonly in the ratio of 7 or 8 to 1, length to diameter. The average diameter of wollastonite is 3.5 µm. Some crystals of wollastonite fluoresce under short-wave or longwave ultraviolet light, or both, with colors ranging from yellow-orange to pink-orange. Specimens may also show phosphorescence. The acicularity of wollastonite is a property of considerable importance to the marketplace. The plastics industry makes utilization of high aspect ratio grades of wollastonite (20:1) for reinforcing thermoplastics and thermoset polymer compounds. The naturally high pH of 9.9 (10% water slurry) is a prime property to the coatings industry. The coatings industry uses milled grades of wollastonite as a pH stabilizer in interior and exterior PVA and acrylic latex systems. Processed wollastonite can have a G.E. brightness of 90 to 93. Chemically, wollastonite is inert and this property makes it useful as a filler and reinforcing agent. In the belief that a resume of what will be exhibited during this meeting, and a brief record of progress in the seven years which have elapsed since the Institute's first visit to Lake Superior would be interesting, the following statistical data have been prepared or copied from the most reliable sources, and considerations are also presented concerning the development or utilization of some of the resources of the Lake Superior Region. When the Institute, on the return trip from enjoying the charming panoramas of Thunder Cape or Isle Royale, and inspecting the unique development of Silver Islet, passed, in August, 1880, through the St. Mary's Falls ship canal, en route to Escanaba, the boat was lowered from the level of Lake Superior to that of Michigan and Huron lakes (18 feet), through two locks each 70 feet wide and 350 feet long, which had been in use since 1855. But as these locks accommodated vessels which drew 12 feet of water or less, a new lock 80 feet wide, 515 feet long and admitting vessels of 16 feet draught was approaching completion and was opened in September, 1881. The time required to pass the locks was utilized by the members in examining the work upon this new lock and in viewing the Sault Ste. Marie, which in discharging from Lake Superior all average volume of 90,783 cubic feet of water per second, forms a rapid, falling 18 feet in one mile. IN DECEMBER, 1934, the joint Committee on Fuel Values, of the American Institute of Minim and Metallurgical Engineers and the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, submitted a preliminary report, which briefly stated its conclusion that it was not possible to devise any formula for the valuation of coal, based upon the various physical and chemical properties, that would be generally applicable. That report also listed those chemical and physical properties of coal that are generally recognized to have some effect on its use in steam plants, and those physical characteristics of steam plants which affect, in one way or another the relative importance of the properties of coal used in them. Since then, the Committee has considered and discussed in greater detail the interrelationship of the properties of coal and plant characteristics. The conclusions of the Committee are summarized below, with certain recommendations regarding engineering procedure, which will promote the collection of more easily correlated observations with respect to this subject, and thus advance more rapidly the accumulation of data capable of general application.

It frequently occurs in the establishment of reduction works, in an entirely new and untried mining district, that the metallurgist in charge finds considerable difficulty in determining the process best adapted to the ores which he receives for treatment. At the first glance it would seem easy enough to decide what style of furnace is best adapted for beneficiating any one class of minerals. If the ore possessed a quartzose gangue and was comparatively free from base metals, while salt could be obtained at a reasonable price, one would naturally resort to a chloridizing roasting, and pan or barrel amalgamation for the extraction of its silver contents. If galena or carbonate of lead was the prevailing mineral, and charcoal could be obtained at moderate figures, the blast-furnace would beneficiate the ores most advantageously. But if, as is usually the case in Colorado, the ores consisted of an intimate mixture of galena, zinc-blende, copper-pyrites, and noble silver minerals, associated with an overwhelming mass of siliceous heavy spar, or limestone gangue, the common reverberatory furnace can be used to the greatest advantage ; and, although the product is only a copper matte, I do not hesitate to affirm that it can be treated, and the silver, gold, and copper produced at nearly the same price for which silver and lead can be separated. In Germany, blast-furnaces are frequently used for this same purpose, both for argentiferous and non-argeutiferous copper ores; but any one who will take the trouble to examine the statistics of smelting at Fahlun, the Oberharz, and other Continental works of this description, will see that the expenses are far too great, and the production much too small to think of employing this method in our mining districts, where only the softest and most miserable kind of charcoal is obtainable. I propose in this paper to give an accurate account of the expenses incurred at the Mount Lincoln Smelting Works in treating the same kind of ore, and producing the same end-product in both blast and reverberatory furnaces. I have taken for comparison a favorable campaign of the blast-furnace, and a good average month's running of the reverberatory. BUTANE OPERATED drilling rigs are a recent innovation in the petroleum industry, so extensive data on their operation are not available. However, experience indicates that, within limitations, as much can he accomplished with butane as with steam, at a decided reduction .in expense of installation and cost of operation. Commercial butane is a liquid motor fuel similar to gasoline, but much more volatile, so that it has to be stored under pressure. At 10° F. it is liquid at atmospheric pressure, but at 100° it has a pressure of 70 lb. or more. As soon as the pressure is reduced, it turns to vapor and in that state is far more easily mixed with the air necessary for combustion. Butane occurs as a by-product in the absorption process of natural gasoline extraction from casing-head gas. The product has been used to some extent 10 raise the octane value of gasoline. However, because of its volatile nature, such admixture is stable only to a limited degree. Attempts also have been made to introduce the product in a gaseous form into oil- hearing formations in repressuring work. It has, however, until recently, for the most part been wasted.

Surface tension and its temperature dependence have been determined for pure liquid Fe, Cu, Co, Ni, and Sn and for Fe-C, Co-C, and Ni-C alloys. The temperature coefficient of surface tension is negative for all these liquids. The surface tension and wetting behavior of tin and tin-titanium alloys on A120,, Si,N,, MoSi,, and Sic, as well as the behavior of titanium-containing nickel alloys on A1 20, have been determined over a wide temperature range. For all the solids investigated titanium additims markedly lower the contact angle. Some limits for the solid-surface energies have been calculated from liquid surface tension and wetting behavior. SURFACE tension and interface energy are important variables in a number of metallurgical and ceramic phenomena, and have been discussed at some length in connection with determining micro-structure of polyphase systems,' solid-state sintering,' thermal etching of grain boundaries, heats of solution and fine powders,'1 grain-growth phenomena,' the mechanical behavior of fine foils and fibers, nucleation, soldering and brazing,' and other phenomenz of academic or practical interest However, until recently few quantitative data have been available for high-temperature systems. Among available data are some indicating positive temperature coefficients for the surface tension of liquid copper,*,11,'2 cast iron,l3 and iron-carbon14 alloys. Although carbon was found to be not surface active in iron at 1570" some preliminary studies had indicated the possibility of a positive temperature coefficient for the eutectic composition at lower temperatures.16 One part of the present study has been largely concerned with determining the temperature coefficient of surface tension for several metals at elevated temperatures, In addition to surface-tension studies, the wetting behavior of alloys containing titanium has been investigated over a wide temperature range. Previous measurements indicated that titanium was selectively adsorbed from nickel at a liquid nickel-solid alumina interface,17 and the use of titanium hydride or titanium-alloy techniques for metal-ceramic soldering is well known. In the present study, previous data have been extended to new alloy systems, and measurements have been carried out with other oxidation-resistant ceramics. EXPERIMENTAL The sessile-drop method was employed to measure liquid surface tension and contact angle between liquid and solid, utilizing apparatus and techniques which have been described previously.'g The shape of a sessile drop depends on equilibrium between forces of surface tension tending to form a spherical surface of minimum area and forces of gravity tending to flatten the drop. Typical sessile drops are shown in Fig. 1. From precise measurements of maximum drop diameter and drop height the surface tension and drop volume were calculated. Four solid materials were employed as supporting plaques for the liquid-metal drops. Aluminum oxide (99.9 pct, J, T. Baker, reagent grade) was pressed and sintered at 1800°C. Molybdenum-disilicide powder (99.0 pct, Electro Metallurgical Co.) was pressed and sintered at 1650°C. Plaques were cut from silicon carbide (99.4 pct, hot-pressed at Alfred University) and silicon nitride (95.1 pct, with Al, Fe, 0 as major impurities, Norton Co.) rods. All plaques were polished, cleaned, and dried prior to use. A number of metals and alloys were employed. Chemical analyses of vacuum-melted ingots of iron, nickel, cobalt (National Research Corp.), commercial nickel-base alloys, electrolytic copper (International Smelting and Refining Co.), and tin (Mal-linckrodt Chemical Works) are given in Table I. Alloys were prepared in the laboratory by vacuum melting the base metal with either titanium hydride (Metal Hydrides, Xnc.) or spectroscopic-grade carbon (National Carbon Corp.). Nickel-titanium alloys contained between 0.001 and 0.005 pct oxygen and the ferromagnetic metal-carbon alloys contained 0.001 pct. Cylindrical metal specimens (1 to 2.5 g) were machined and bevelled at the bottom to insure a uniform advancing contact angle on melting. Before use the samples were acid-etched, cleaned with acetone, and rinsed in petrol ether.

Nearly 95 per cent of the total coke production in the United States in 1940 was consumed in blast furnaces. In 1939 the percentage was 69,9, and in 1938 it was 61.3, To produce a net ton of pig iron 1959 lb. of coke was required in ,1940 and 1760o lb. in 1939. These figures indicate how dependent the production of pig iron is upon the production of coke. The rate of iron production is in some measure influenced by the physical and chemical characteristics of the coke. Blast-furnace operators believe that the physical properties of coke profoundly influence the operation of the furnace. Although it is true that coke of a wide variety of physical properties is used in American blast furnaces, the periodic fluctuation of these properties is one of the causes of irregularity of blast-furnace operation. The purpose of this paper is to present a broad picture of the physical properties of by-product coke that are generally considered to be important by coke-oven and blast-furnace operators. Effects of the kind of coal used, the preparation of the coal, the rate of coking, and other factors will be considered. Of all these variables, the kind of coal used is by far the most important. In this discussion use will be made of the method of coal classification by rank1 standardized by the American Society for Testing Materials. Although this method of classification has been an American standard for several years, it has not been given the attention it deserves, especially in connection with the selection of coal for production of coke. Despite the fact that many producers of blast-furnace coke are limited to some particular source or sources of coal, a good understanding of the principles involved in setting up the standard method of classification may lead to a better appreciation of the causes of changes in coke characteristics. Furthermore, where it is necessary to select new coals as a substitute for the original supply, this method of classification can be of great assistance. The data presented have been gathered from many sources, but no attempt has been made to cover the vast literature. Instead, some of the more important data have been selected to show how coals and their carbonization affect some of the physical properties of coke. It must be emphasized that generalizations concerning the behavior of coking coals are presented and that individual coals may vary widely from the specific behavior depicted. Nevertheless, it is believed that the data illustrate certain typical behaviors. Neither was it possible to cover completely all the factors involved; for example, the macroscopic constituents of coal are believed to have important effects on the physical properties of coke, but since there is little information available for such study, and since vitrain, clarain, and durain are neither

Henry LOUIS, London, England (communication to the Secretary) : Prof. Richards's paper has impressed me as highly valuable. Without entering upon any discussion of it as careful and thorough as it deserves, I venture to mention one or two points which a perusal of it has recalled to my mind in connection with my own study and practice of ore-dressing. I always mentally divide jigging into two phases: 1. A particle at rest on the jig-bed is lifted and carried upwards by the rising current of water, at an increasing velocity, which tends to a maximum. When the upward current is stopped, the particle continues to rise with rapidly diminishing velocity until it comes to rest. This completes the first phase. 2. In the second phase, the particle falls from its position of rest with an increasing velocity which tends again to a maximum, and continues to fall until the rising current of water has reduced its velocity to zero. This completes the second phase. The second phase will evidently be greatly modified by the effect of suction, as Prof. Richards shows; but I do not see that his experiments very clearly imitate the action of the second phase. And the brief intervals at the end of each phase, when the mineral particle, by reason of its acquired velocity, is still moving, though in opposition to the water-current, yet remain to be investigated. I feel especially, in Prof. Richards's paper, a difficulty which I have felt with regard to all similar previous investigations, namely, that the experiments deal with particles falling a long distance, when the velocity becomes uniform. I question whether this uniform maximum velocity is attained in actual jigging-practice. If so, it is certainly for a comparatively very small proportion only of each stroke. It seems to me that an investigation like that of Prof. Richards, but confined to the first 6 or 8 inches of fall only, and carried out with suitably delicate recording-apparatus, is what we

THE local auditorium of a little Alabama mining town was crowded with expectant men, women and children, as the bulletin board had announced the addition of visiting entertainers to supplement the local talent and motion pictures which usually made up the program of the regular monthly safety meeting. In the audience, near the stage, sat a group of bright-faced boys in boy scout uniforms, discussing the picture just completed. As the lights flashed on a crash and scream was heard from the outside, a shrill whistle and word of command from the scoutmaster, and five of the scouts ran out of the hall, while the mine super-intendent stepped on the stage and requested everyone to keep their seats. The scouts returned, three of them carrying a limp figure in their arms, while the other two cleared the doorway and aisle of excited spectators. They marched to the stage and, placing the apparently badly-injured boy on the floor, proceeded to give an expert demonstration of first aid to the injured. The scoutmaster then explained to the audience that the whole affair had been arranged for their benefit, and invited the local first-aid men to come up on the stage to examine and criticize the boys' work. This gave an opening for several talks on the value of first-aid training and accident prevention, which is the main object of the monthly meetings. This demonstration was given by the first-aid team of Troop One, and the entertainment was provided by members of Troop One and Twenty-eight of the Bir-mingham Scout Council, organized by the writer for the purpose of promoting interest in the welfare and safety meetings in the mining villages of the State. During the past year they have visited a number of such meet-ings and presented programs similar to the one men-tioned above. However, in order to assure a good attendance, entertainment features must also be pro-vided, and the serious part of the evening program was interspersed with excellent vocal and instrumental mu-sic, dancing and novelty acrobatic acts furnished by the visiting scouts. In addition to the numerous first-aid teams of the Birmingham Council, there are hundreds of scouts scat-tered throughout the mining district whose knowledge of first aid, safety first, life-saving, personal health and public health are a constant source of protection to their community. All of these subjects are covered by merit badge pamphlets and are required of an eagle scout.
