One of the numerous requirements of many grades of present- day steel is that the steel shall be free from non-metallic inclusions. These inclusions may be composed of oxides, sulphides, complex oxy- sulphides, and nitrides, which enter the steel with the furnace charge, result from sulphur absorption from the furnace gases, or are formed in the steel during the deoxidation process. Although few' data are available which indicate in any quantitative manner the specific effects of inclusions in steel, there is a large mass of circumstantial evidence which points to the advisability of producing steel free from these impurities for many purposes. At the present time there is a growing feeling among metallurgists that non-metallic inclusions should be divided into two distinct types: (I) those readily visible under the microscope at ordinary magnifications; and (2) those in colloidal suspension or in solid solution. Both types are profoundly influenced by the character of the charge, the manipulation of the furnace slag, and the method of deoxidation. The work described in this bulletin deals primarily with inclusions visible under the microscope at ordinary magnifications, but the steels made by the various methods of deoxidation are being used LO study certain effects which may be ascribed to the second classification, named above. This latter work will be the subject of further bulletins on the effect of deoxidation practice on the physical properties of the steels involved.

In presenting this paper the author has in view a twofold purpose. In the first place, it is intended to set forth for the benefit of practical mining men some account of the principles underlying the design of tungsten carbide rock bits in the hope that a knowledge of these principles will assist in the successful application of the bits to mine and quarry drilling. Secondly, by evoking discussion, and even controversy, it is hoped that manufacturers and users of these rock bits will be encouraged to contribute to the general knowledge of a subject which to date has been rather lacking in published literature. The author well appreciates that many of the conclusions drawn in this paper are highly controversial, but if the only result is to call forth contradictory testimony from other workers in this field, at least one of his purposes will have been achieved.An attempt will first be made to set forth and examine those characteristics which go to make up an efficient rock bit, and the main factors affecting these characteristics will be discussed. In a paper of this general nature, consideration of any particular aspect must necessarily be rather brief, and there is little opportunity for detailed presentation of test procedures and data. Characteristics of metal/non metal mines were evaluated to determine the suitability of applying the U.S. Bureau of Mines electromagnetic location system to the problem of locating trapped mines in metal/non metal mines. Statistical distributions of mine depths and overburden conductivities show that the existing USBM EM system is inadequate for most metal/non metal mines. Alternate approaches to trapped miner location in deep mines were identified and subsequent field tests were conducted at six (6) mines to evaluate their feasibility. The approach considered to be the most promising is one which utilizes the existing manpack transmitting system, modified slightly for a dual frequency output, in conjunction with a sophisticated signal processing receiver on the surface. The main advantage of staying with a "through the earth" approach is that the underground equipment can be kept simple, easily maintained, light-weight and inexpensive.

"Under certain conditions useful gravity information of a reconnaissance nature can be obtained with-out measuring elevations by spirit level surveys on the ground. Gravity surveys can become part of a practical exploration program where high cost and slow progress previously hindered their utility. The advantages of the new elevation procedures are realized mainly in remote areas, in areas where ground transportation is slow and difficult and on surveys where the station spacing is large in comparison with the distance of the average optimum level shot. To utilize the advantages, transportation by helicopter or light plane is usually necessary. Methods of obtaining elevation control without leveling include: barometric altimeter survey; photogram-metric -APR spot determinations; methods involving the measurement of gravity gradients. The accuracies of these methods have been tested and compared with the normal accuracy of level surveys. It is felt that each method has its place in reconnaissance gravity work, particularly in the open areas of Northern Canada."

The U.S. Bureau of Mines funded a project which addressed objectives concerning irrigation of native plants and inoculation of native plants with vesicular-arbuscular mycorrhizal (VAM) fungi. The specific irrigation objectives were 1) to demonstrate the performance capabilities of solid-set irrigation for reclaimed mineland conditions, and 2) to demonstrate and evaluate three irrigation concepts under two separate water supply conditions. The VAM inoculations were to assess irrigation benefits in establishing VAM relationships for transplanted native species. Following the seasonal demonstration (May to September 1983) at 3 separate mine sites, conclusions were made that apply to the 6 state Western mining industry. The demonstration sites were located in Montana, Wyoming, and New Mexico. Positive conclusions were reached for 1) the use of soil moisture sampling with or without irrigation, and 2) the selection of solid-set sprinklers as the irrigation method. The conclusions about the irrigation concepts and strategy were mixed, due to the short-term (1 season) nature of the project. No conclusions could be reached for the VAM inoculations because the study time was too short.

The importance of goethite to Australian iron ore production is steadily increasing as the proportion of goethite-rich, martite-goethite bedded and channel iron deposits increases at the expense of declining production from high-grade microplaty hematite deposits. For this reason, an improved understanding of goethite in iron deposits, its genesis, goethite types and their physical and metallurgical properties is vital to maintaining optimum sintering and blast furnace performance in Asian steel mills.The terminology used to describe goethite in Australian iron deposits is currently highly variable. The discredited mineral name ‘limonite’ is still in widespread use as a field term for goethite and there are many misconceptions concerning goethite chemical grade and downstream physical and metallurgical properties. The goethite classification proposed here is based on geological and physical properties from which three types are recognised including brown goethite, dark brown-black vitreous goethite and highly microporous, friable yellow ochreous goethite.In practice, typical vitreous goethite with highly reflective surfaces and conchoidal fracturing, characteristic of the hard cap zone appears from X-ray fluorescence (XRF) and electron microprobe analysis to be significantly higher in Si (up to 18.7 wt per cent), Al (up to 3.5 wt per cent) and S (up to 0.14 wt per cent) compared to the generally very low (<1 wt per cent for Si and Al) levels of these elements in ochreous goethite and brown goethite. The data dispels the common misconception that friable earthy or yellow ochreous goethite is high in Al and Si and other chemical impurities. However, P was found to be consistently higher (mean of 0.112 wt per cent and up to 0.296 wt per cent) in ochreous goethite than brown goethite (mean of 0.011 wt per cent) or vitreous goethite (mean of 0.031 wt per cent). The highly porous microstructure of ochreous goethite is thought to have a much higher surface area, which may aid in preferential adsorption of P onto the ochreous goethite mineral surface.CITATION:Manuel, J R and Clout, J M F, 2017. Apart from a few sketches and incomplete maps, mainly topographical, and one or two detailed maps of placer-creeks, there is little information on the topography and geology of most of the country adjacent to the sections of the Alaska Highway in the Liard River area, particularly that part east of Kechika river. In 1943, the Geological Survey of Canada made a recon-naissance from Fort Nelson clown the river of that name to the Liard, thence up the latter to Hell Gate, and also up Beaver river for a distance of fifty miles. The whole of the area covered was found to be underlain by sedimentary rocks, not a single igneous dyke being seen. The British Columbia Department of Mines began reconnaissances near the highway both in and north of the drainage basin of Prophet and Muskwa rivers with a view to finding structures favourable for the accumulation of oil. In Liard River valley near the mouth of Smith river and at intervals from there clown to Devil' s Portage occur warm springs whose character and origin are not definitely' known, since they have not been investigated (21, p. 38A). Similar springs are said to occur at several localities over a broad belt extending from Muskwa river across the Liard to the Nahanni River country (26, p. 11). On Liard river below the mouth of Dease river, stratified sands, gravels, and clays of Pleistocene (?) age are constantly met with and in one or two places are underlain by sandy clays. The distribution of the latter, however, is very limited in the section cut by the river west of the Rocky mountains. The only range of these mountains that reaches the Liard is the high limestone ridge which approaches the mouth of Vents river from the southeast and then almost vanishes a few miles to the northwest of it (27, pp. 43-45). In general, the ranges of the Rockies in the area under consideration have been but little explored, but they are undoubtedly very largely sedimentary and, with the exception of some volcanics and intrusives on their western flanks, are probably almost entirely so. Unlike the high, deeply incised ranges in southern British Columbia, they dwindle in elevation north of Terminus mountain to low-wooded ridges separated by wide swampy valleys, and practically lose their identity between it and the Liard. The foothills, which, along the Liard, have a width of 38 miles (from near the mouth of Trout river to Hell Gate) are composed of a great series of alternating shales and sandstones, with some limestones, all folded closely together, which resemble those found in the foothills farther south (27, pp. 50, 19-20).

Under the sponsorship of the U.S. Department of Energy, a project was completed in 2005, which studied the use of a special pneumatic capsule pipeline (PCP) system, driven by linear induction motor (LIM), for transporting minerals and/or mine wastes. In this study, the pipeline is a rectangular tube of 1m × 1m cross section. The capsules are similar to railroad cars running on small rails imbedded in the tube. A LIM is placed AT the entrance of the tube to transfer power electro-magnetically from the LIM to capsules. The capsules going through the LIM, propelled by the electromagnetic field generated by the LIM, move faster than the air and hence impart energy into the airflow. This in turn pushes the capsules in the tube forward. When the tube is long (say longer than 10 km), additional LIMs may be needed along the tube to serve as booster pumps. An advantage of using LIMs instead of blowers as used in ordinary PCPs is that capsules can pass through the LIMs unhindered. This enables the use of booster pumps for long tubes. It also enables PCP to achieve much higher cargo throughput than that of PCPs using blowers, thereby reducing unit cost ($ per ton-km). Advantages of using capsules with steel wheels running on steel rails in the tubes including: (1) contact friction is only about one-fifth of that using rubber tires, thereby conserving energy, (2) capsules can run at a much higher speed than those using rubber tires without overheating and damaging the tires, and (3) rails make capsule motion control simple; they restrict lateral movement of capsules, and make branching easy-by using standard rail crossing equipment. This advanced PCP system combines the advantages of LIM with the advantages of rails, resulting in a super-efficient tube system having throughputs an order of magnitude greater than that of conventional PCPs, and having an energy efficiency better than railroad transport. Analysis shows that the system is highly cost-effective when throughput is high-at least 5 million tons per year. The system is most suitable for long-distance transportation of minerals (including coal and flyash) and wastes (including both mine wastes and municipal solid waste).

"The Turgeon Lake granite lies 5 miles north of Baie Johan Beetz, Quebec, at the eastern margin of the Grenville Province. The rocks are classed as granites, granulites, quartzites, biotite schists and gneisses, and amphibolites. The granite's uraniferous character is manifested by phosphuranylite, uraninite, and metamict .zircons associated with magnetite. Field anomalies occur in irregular pods, conformable with the tectonic foliation, in bands roughly paralleling sedimentary bedding. Associated features diagnostic of uraniferous granite are smoky quartz, brick-red feldspar, magnetite and a coarse to pegmatitic grain size. The granite is chemically and physically heterogeneous. Metasediment-granite contacts are diffuse or sharp, and usually conformable to bedding. The regional foliations within all rock types are coherent, and sedimentary structures are often preserved within both metasediments and granite. Autometasomatism probably was a strong granitization agent.A uranium reconcentration into fold-axial zones from original sediments which have been highly granitized during at least two phases of folding is suggested from the available data."

Accident rates continue to show that underground mining jobs areamong the most hazardous occupations in the United States and roof bolter operators continue to have one of the highest accident incident rates (MSHA, 1991) despite efforts by labor, government, and industry to reduce and eliminate work-related hazards. In the last two decades we have seen technical innovations such as the ATRS, and there has been an increased emphasis on hazard awareness through programs such as MSHA's REAP, but bolter operators continue to be injured and killed. Researchers at West Virginia University examined risk in the roof bolter's job and developed new approaches to accident and injury prevention. The study concentrated on the workers' job performance, machinery and the work environment to identify miner's risk and hazard exposure while bolting.

The sudden, violent collapse of large areas of room-and-pillar mines poses a special hazard to miners and mine operators. This type of failure, termed a "Cascading Pillar Failure" (CPF), occurs when one pillar in a mine layout fails transfering its load to neighboring pillars causing them to fail, and so forth. Recent examples of this kind of failure in coal, metal and nonmetal mines in the U.S. are documented. Mining engineers can limit the danger posed by these failures through improved mine design practices. Whether failure occurs in a slow, nonviolent manner or in a rapid, violent manner is governed by the local mine stiffness stability criterion. This stability criterion is used as the basis for three design approaches to control cascading pillar failure in room-and-pillar mines, namely, the containment approach, the prevention approach, and the full extraction mining approach. These design approaches are illustrated with practical examples for coal mining.

"The geology of the Ore Fault Ni-Cu deposit has been reinterpreted in the light of recent studies of the geology of the Neoarchean Bird River Sill Complex and the occurrence of economic Ni-Cu and Zn-Cu-Ag mineralization. The Ni-Cu sulfides are hosted by the lower of two parallel NNW-trending and moderately W-dipping mafic-ultramafic intrusions related to the Bird River Sill Complex. The bod¬ies intruded a bimodal volcanic suite consisting of weakly deformed mafic flows and felsic pyroclastic rocks. The mafic volcanic rocks are geochemically related to the MORB-type rocks of the Lamprey Falls Formation, and the felsic volcanic rocks are related to arc-type rocks of the Peterson Creek Formation. The original pyroxene- and olivine-dominated mineralogy of the sills has been replaced by variable ser¬pentine-amphibole-talc-carbonate assemblages.The Ni-Cu sulfide assemblage exhibits textures and geochemical signatures typical of orthomagmatic sulfide mineralization. The sulfide minerals are associated with cumulate layers of magnetic ferrochromite that range in thickness from a few to tens of centimeters. A later event of Zn-Cu-Ag sulfide mineralization associated with quartz veining and garnet-chlorite alteration along a fault that strikes north, dips vertically, and cuts all rock types. The mineralized fault is cut by the NE-trending Peterson Creek shear zone. Where the Ni-Cu and Zn-Cu-Ag mineralized zones intersect, remnant magmatic features such as amphibolite or cumulate ferrochromite bands occur within quartz veins or local chlorite alteration. The mixed zones contain a very unusual polymetallic assemblage of Ni, Cu, Zn, Ag, and platinum group elements (PGE)."

The rapid growth of the metallurgical, chemical, and allied industries on the Pacific coast just prior to and during the war caused a sudden increase in the demand for refractories, which was the immediate cause of a revival in interest in refractory clays available on the Pacific coast, particularly in the Pacific Northwest. Population increases and shortage of shipping facilities caused an increase in the amount of various ceramic materials and products used and produced on the Pacific coast, with accompanying demand for information regarding sources of clay. In an effort to supply part of this information, the Bureau of Mines, in cooperation with the College of Mines, University of Washington, started a program in 1944 to test the refractory and other properties of clays from seven Pacific Northwest deposits that had been drilled and sampled as part of the Bureau of Mines alumina from clay investigation. Figure 1 shows the location of these deposits.

"To recover more valuable ore and considering the complexity of minerals, the needs to grind finer is increasing. To reach the desired fine grinding targets, using the existing grinding media size, the energy consumption is increasing exponentially. As already proved at this conference, small grinding media represents the best potential to improve grinding efficiency. How do the small grinding media perform in industrial grinding mills?The use of small grinding media in regrind mills proved that finer grinding can be achieved at lower energy consumption. In ball mills, smaller grinding media versus 25 mm media generate a power saving from 10% to 44%. In vertical stirred mills, the power saving increases from 20% to 60%. More potential savings have been identified.For the same operating conditions, how a vertical stirred mill is performing compared to ball milling? In regrind application, a vertical stirred mill with small media (5-12 mm Millpebs) will require at least 62% less energy than a ball mill charged with 25 mm grinding media.INTRODUCTIONIn some mining applications, fine grinding is needed to liberate further the valuable ore. The purpose of regrind mills is to achieve the last stage of grinding before final flotation stage: the cleaners. In part because of high prices of small grinding media as well as availability, the most widely used size of grinding media is 25 mm.When calculating the recommended ball top size from Bond’s formula (Bond, 1961), the size for regrind applications is much lower than 25 mm. Today, the barrier for small grinding media is broken. They are best suited in regrind application. The size of grinding media is one of the most important variables affecting the mill efficiency (McIvor, R., 1997; Nesset, J.E., Radziszewski, P., Hardie, C. & Leroux, D.P., 2006).Conventional ball milling was discarded for fine grinding because of its very poor energy efficiency (Zheng, J., Harris, C.C. & Somasundaran, P., 1994; Yan, D.S., Freeman, M. & Dunne, R., 1995). Therefore, new technologies as stirred mills were developed to grind finer more effectively. Three fundamental questions should be asked. What is the best fine grinding technology? What should be the best media size to use? Is it possible to grind finer by using less energy with the existing regrind equipment?"

This paper presents the results of a study on the optimum auxiliary fan location to control air recirculation in dead-end workings where diesel-powered vehicles operate. Investigations were conducted with various secondary fan locations from the dead-end crosscut and with the intake air quantities varied using different auxiliary fans to control air recirculation and diesel particulate matter (DPM).

Deformation Rate Analysis (DRA) and porosimetry have been used to demonstrate the “stress memory” effect in rock and to estimate the vertical in-situ stress in samples of fine-coarse grained sandstone and carbonaceous mudstone. The results of this study indicate that the stresses predicted using both methods are similar to those determined from depth and density of the overburden rocks. The results confirmed that DRA was still applicable even when the core had been sampled 18 months prior to testing. Additionally, the DRA results were modelled using the software PFC2D. A uniaxial test was modelled using the same rock parameters as those observed for the actual core samples. This numerical technique can be used as an aid for DRA results analysis, and can also be used to predict the minimum stress level at which the DRA technique is applicable. The results confirm that any rock mechanics laboratory having standard test equipment could apply the DRA method combined with standard UCS testwork to determine the in-situ stress. Mit der Analyse der Deformationsrate (DRA) und der Anwendung der Porosimetrie wird der Spannungsgedaechtnisseffekts (Stress Memory Effect) im Fels demonstriert, und es werden Abschaetzungen fuer die vertikale in-situ Spannung einer Probe aus mittelgrobem Sandstein und carbonierten Lehmstein getroffen. Die Ergebnisse dieser Untersuchung zeigen, dass die mit Hilfe dieser beiden Methoden ermittelten Spannungen sind vergleichbar. Die Ergebnisse bestaetigen, dass DRA noch anwendbar ist, wenn die Proben schon 18 Monate vor Untersuchungsbeginn gesammelt worden sind. Darueber hinaus wurden die DRA Ergebnisse mit Hilfe des Sofwarepakets PFC modelliert. Ein einaxialer Test wurde mit genau die gleichen Felsparametern, die fuer die eigentliche Probe gelten, modelliert. Diese numerische Methode kann sowohl als eine Unterstuetzung fuer DRA Ergebnisanalyse als auch zur Ermittlung der minimalen Spannung, bei dem die DRA Methode noch anwendbar ist, herangezogen werden. Die Ergebnisse bestaetigen, dass jedes Felsmechaniklabor, das mit den ueblichen Testgeraeten ausgestattet ist, die DRA Methode in Kombination mit dem Standard UCS Testarbeit zur Bestimmung der in-situ Spannungen anwenden kann. L'Analyse du Taux de la difformité (DRA) et les porosimetry ont été utilisés démontrer le " effet de la mémoire " du stress dans roc et estimer le stress dans - situ vertical dans échantillons de grès du grained fin grossier et mudstone carbonifère. Les résultats de cette étude indiquent que les insistances ont prédit utiliser les deux methods est semblable à ceux déterminés de profondeur et densité du surchargez des rocs. Working safely means working cost-effectively. Every "dangerous occurrence" and - even more so - every industrial accident causes disruptions in the planned course of construction. Besides moral and legal obligations, economic aspects are therefore also factors motivating increased efforts towards optimal prevention: improvements in work safety and protection of health are wise investments! Ever since its earliest days, the European Federation of Foundation Contractors (EFFC) has made this subject one of its key objectives and therefore set up a Safety + Environmental Working Group, in which experts from the member organisations exchange national experience and develop proposals for "best practices". The paper presents current developments and results from the work of the S+E WG with particular reference to the project "Ideas for Safety Improvement".

Before 1914 , Chile , because of her extensive resources of natural nitrates , practically monopolized the world markets for one of the leading fertilizer materials . Since nitrogen also is an important war material , constituting in fact the principal ingredient in many high-powered explosives , the World War and the widespread insistence upon national self- sufficiency for war materials brought about the development of nitrogen fixation plants in all of the larger countries . The production of by- product ammonia from gas and coke plants was likewise stimulated . As a result , Chile , even after the ocean lanes were reopened , was forced to fight for her lost markets . Since the world capacity to produce is still far in excess of annual consumption , the competition between natural and synthetic supplies has been keen and prices have fallen below pre-war levels . Chile has recently succeeded in unifying her industry , utilizing the most efficient process now in operation, and the Government is a partner in the new company that will take over all of the present producing companies . These developments place Chilean nitrate of soda , in a much more favorable position among the markets of the world . More intense competition will undoubtedly follow and , in order that those interested may become familiar with the fields upon which the nitrogen conflicts of the near future may be waged , the following general summary of the nitrogen industry has been prepared .

On Nov 1, 2007 House Resolution 2262 ? The Hardrock Mining and Reclamation Act of 2007 ? was passed by the U.S. House by a vote of 244-166. HR-2262, among other things, would impose a 4-per-cent royalty on existing mines with commercial production and an 8-percent gross royalty on all new claims. Not surprisingly, this possible new law was one of the hottest topics of discussion at the Northwest Mining Association?s conference that this year returned to Spokane, WA for its 113th annual meeting on Dec. 3-7. More than 1,800 delegates attended the conference that was held under the banner theme of ?Mining ?. For today and tomorrow.? Northwest Mining Association executive director Laura Skaer was one of many speakers during the three-day conference to respond to the threat to the industry posed by HR-2262 with a presentation titled ?Potential changes to the 1872 Mining Law.? In the presentation that she first unveiled at the Alaska Miners Association?s convention and trade show on Nov. 8, Skaer laid out a comprehensive list of problems with HR-2262. In addition to the association?s obvious concerns about the proposed royalty, Skaer noted that the bill includes a mine veto provision that would allow the Secretary of the Interior the authority to deny an operations permit to a project if the secretary determines that the operation would cause undue degradation to public lands and resources. Potential massive withdrawals from mineral entry are also included in HR-2262. Among the lands that could be off limits to miners under HR-2262 are wilderness study areas, areas of environmental concern and 23.6 hm2 (58.5 million acres) identified as Roadless Rule. States, political subdivisions and Indian Tribes would also have more authority to withdraw lands, she said. To combat the proposed changes, Skaer made 10 trips to Washington D.C. on behalf of NWMA members in 2007. In her presentation at the annual meeting, she also objected to provisions that include no life-of-mine permits and uncertain permit renewals and new and duplicative environmental standards that she said are vague, ambiguous and inconsistent with current federal and state environmental laws. Debra W. Struhsacker, an environmental permitting and government relations consultant, also spoke on the issue of HR-2262 with a presentation titled ?The House mining law bill ? Rip van Winkle is back ? and he?s meaner than ever.?
