INTRODUCTION Underground blasting with perimeter damage control can reduce the requirement for loose rock scaling and reduce the risk of ground-fall injury. In previous work Johnson and associates (2010) from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) developed a rock blasting perimeter damage and control design method included in the DRIFT software tool (NIOSH, 2018). This blast design software tool utilizes current methods of perimeter blasting with the added design element of a buffer row coordinated with the perimeter row to reduce perimeter damage. The coordination is in applying one of several blast damage models to calculate the damage extent for each production, buffer, and perimeter blast hole in the design. The calculated damage is then applied to the spacing between the blast holes. The basis of the buffer row design is the practical damage limit and is supported in this paper with computer models of signature blasts and full blast rounds using PFC2D (Itasca Consulting Group, Inc., 2018). Practical damage limit The practical damage radius (Rd) is not to be confused with burden. The practical damage extends toward the burden side and inward into the rock mass. For all practical purposes, the practical damage radius equals one half the burden (Hustrulid, 1999). The maximum extent of radial crack damage around a blast hole (Rcrack) and the maximum extent of radial crushing damage (Rcrush) are illustrated in Figure 1. A “practical” radius of damage (Rd) lies between the crushing limit and the cracking limit. The “practical” damage means that if the rock mass lying outside of the practical damage circle were removed, the rock remaining within the circle would easily break apart. Blast pressure and strain Work by Johnson (2010) and associates included signature blast tests in large concrete blocks. A signature blast test in concrete as exampled by strain data in Figure 2 was designed to monitor the dynamic strain at incremental distances from a single fully coupled blast hole, measure crushing and radial cracking extent by wire-sawing to expose the damage, and relate the damage to overbreak that is common in underground blasting. The initial slope or rising strain as the stress wave passes by the strain gages shows very high strain and strain rates close to the single blast hole. Since the derivative of strain versus time is strain rate, a line tangent to each of the strain curves at the maximum strain rate is drawn and the strain rates identified. The high strain rates were then plotted on a semi-log in Figure 3 to show a linear trend. The strain rate is greater than 100 s-1 within 20 cm from the blast hole for the signature blast experiment. The strain rate at the blast hole wall is projected to be 300 s-1. Figure 4 illustrates the damage in the NIOSH block exposed by a wire saw cut.

The increased costs of exploration and drilling of new oil fields and the continued success of water flooding in nearly depleted oil fields have created a demand for information on the results obtained from individual projects. The Bureau of Mines has published several reports concerning water-flood activity in the Mid continent area and at the request of the industry has continued to collect and disseminate this information. This report was written in response to these requests. It describes in detail the water-flooding projects in Anderson, Franklin, Linn, and Miami Counties, Kans., and includes methods of water treating and the results obtained. The production histories of each county and many water-flood projects are shown graphically from the date of the first development. Maps of most of the major projects, showing their status as of January 1, 1953 are presented also. The practice of injecting water to stimulate oil production was legalized in Kansas in 1935, and the first water-flooding project authorized in this four-county area was initiated by the Texas Co. in December 1935 in Linn County, Forty-nine projects2/ initiated in the area to January 1953 are estimated to have recovered approximately 10 million barrels of oil that could not have been produced by methods used previously. About 7,900 productive acres had been, or are, flooded by these projects, and approximately 1.36 million barrels of water had been injected.

Salt dome hosted metallic sulfide deposits are the product of a complex evolutionary system involving halokinesis, cap rock development and diagenesis, and the generation, migration, and accumulation of basinal brines and hydrocarbons. Hydrocarbons play an important role in: (1) the production of calcite cap rock which hosts some of the metallic sulfide and sulfur concentrations, and (2) the generation of the reduced sulfur available for metallic sulfide precipitation and sulfur formation. Hydrocarbons and related fluids also are involved in the transporta¬tion and remobilization of the metals. Hydrocarbon consumption, in the course of cap rock development and sulfide mineralization at Hockley dome, is estimated to have been 6.4 million barrels of oil or 114 million cubic feet of methane. Mineral textures, including cap-rock banding, sulfide bands in anhydrite, and fine sulfide mineral banding indicate both episodic fluid influx and fluid compositional differences through time. Features such as pyrite "shells" and sphalerite and marcasite hemispheres may have been localized by hydrocarbon droplets and /or bacterial colonies. Marcasite mineralization in shallow strata above and flanking Hockley dome is best developed over the western and southern parts of the dome. This pattern mimics the known distribution of sulfide mineralization, which is dominantly marcasite, in the underlying cap rock. The iron sulfide paragenetic sequence in the sediments is pyritohedral and cubic + pyrithohedral pyrite followed by marcasite which is encrusted by cubic pyrite. Sulfur isotopic averages for the three stages are +20.8, -20.2, and +6.4 per mil, respectively. These values generally coincide with cap rock sulfate (+20 per mil), cap rock hosted metallic sulfides (-20 to +4 per mil), and sulfur in hydrocarbons (+5.8 per mil). Hydrocarbon compositions indicate provincial variations in oil composition and generation history. Long Point and Boling domes, which have an intergrown sulfide-sulfate-sulfur mineral assemblage indicative of mixed reducing-oxidizing environment, contain oils that are less mature than Hockley dome which appears to be more mineralogically segregated. Sterane biomarker compositions of the oils at Hockley, Long Point and Boling domes indicate a local, dominantly terrestrial source. An oil sample from supracap sandstones on the northeast flank of Hockley dome contained over 750 ppm combined Fe, Zn, Pb, and Co, indicating that hydrocarbons are carrying or remobilizing metals. Cap rock calcite and anhydrite also exhibit provincial variations in strontium isotopic ratios. Calcite and anhydrite cap rocks from several sulfide mineralized domes in the Houston diapir province have strontium isotopic ratios that are more radiogenic than Jurassic sea water (>0.7078). A calcite sample within massive sulfides at Winnfield dome also has a high 87Sr/86Sr ratio (0.7085). Variations in strontium isotopic ratios with strontium content indicate the mixing of at least three Sr-bearing fluids in the cap rock environment, one of which may have been the metal carrier. Anhydrite residues from diapiric salt have strontium ratios up to 0.7100, considerably more radiogenic than Jurassic seawater. These high ratios indicate either that salt and anhydrite recrystallized sometime post-Jurassic in the presence of a fluid with a high 87Sr/86Sr ratio, or that they precipitated in the Jurassic from a fluid with a higher 87Sr/86Sr ratio than Jurassic seawater. Salt domes with cap rocks containing metallic sulfides have only been found in basins that have geopressured zones. Waters from geopressured zones in the vicinity of mineralized salt domes have salinities that are two or more times higher and iron and base metal concentrations that are three to one thousand times higher, than geopressured fluids from other parts of the basin.

This paper will discuss the design, construction, and performance of the support of excavation on the Dulles East and West Automated People Mover Tunnels and Station projects. The elements of the system included drilled soil nails and rock anchors with reinforced shotcrete to the excavated face. We will discuss the geotechnical characteristics, design and construction considerations, loading criteria, construction techniques, schedule constraints, and performance of the support of excavation system. In consideration of the conference theme, there will be a discussion of the application of the real-time instrumentation monitoring program. The project team worked to design and install approximately 710,000 square feet of shotcrete and 19,000 soil nails/rock anchors as well as excavate over 720,000 cubic yards of rock materials within 15 months and in such a manner as to minimize the disruption to airport passengers and operations.

The Red Lake Mine is located approximately 600 km northwest of Thunder Bay. This 545 tpd (600 tons/day) underground narrow vein gold operation is set to produce in excess of 14.8 tonnes (475,000 ounces) in 2001 at a cash operating cost below 75 U$/oz. The high-grade nature of this deposit (>55 g/t or >1.6 opt) coupled with its complex geological environment and relatively deep location dictated the choice of a very selective primary mining method, Mechanized Overhand Cut and Fill. In addition to geological challenges, mine design issues such as material handling, ground stability and requirements for yieldable ground support are also discussed in this paper.

One of the most significant technical and practical challenges facing the tunnel construction team on the Legacy Way road tunnel project in Brisbane, Australia was how to erect the prestressed precast concrete slabs to form the smoke duct in the tunnel boring machine (TBM) tunnels.An essential part of the tunnel ventilation system, the smoke duct extends the full length of the 4.6 km-long twin two-lane tunnels. The vast majority of the tunnels (approximately 4.3 km) were constructed using two 12.4 m diameter double-shield TBMs. The refurbished Herrenknecht machines broke several world records on the way to completing the tunnel excavation works in just over nine months. With the excavation complete the focus turned to solving the complex civil tunnel fit-out challenges. A key component of the civil fit-out of the tunnels was constructing the smoke duct in the TBM tunnels, which was designed as a precast solution.The slabs, which each measure 8.62 m long × 2.0 m wide × 200 mm thick and weigh close to 9?t, need to be erected above cast in situ corbels whilst other tunnel finishing works continue. The space-proofing clearance offered by the design to the support corbels below and the precast segmental lining above was in the order of only 100 mm.This paper tells the story of how the Transcity Joint Venture (JV) tunnel fit-out team comprising some of Europe and Australia’s leading tunnel construction specialists drew upon the global strengths of the existing JV member companies and the global reach of leading TBM manufacturer Herrenknecht to develop an innovative system in solving this challenging problem. A study was made of the factors affecting lead and zinc production in the Pacific Northwest. Costs, ore reserves and potential resources, and domestic demand were analyzed. It was concluded that a projected 3.1-percent average annual increase in U.S. demand for zinc through 1975 and a corresponding 2.5-percent rise for lead will be supplied mainly from mines in the Eastern and Central States. Annual Pacific Northwest mine production of lead is estimated to fluctuate around 82,000 tons, while zinc output may average 135,000 tons through 1975. Measured, indicated, and inferred reserves in the Pacific Northwest, containing 1.56 million tons of lead and 2.59 million tons of zinc, are more than sufficient to maintain this level of production. Annual production from Pacific Northwest electrolytic zinc plants is expected to increase to over 300,000 tons of slab zinc by 1975. Lead smelters may experience difficulty in maintaining output at 1964 levels.

As ore grades of existing and new ore deposits continue to decrease there is ever increasing pressure to decrease operating costs to maintain profitabitabitiy at existing mine sites and for new projects. The accepted solution to this dilemma in most cases is to increase treatment rate, leading to a coarser grind, at the expense of marginal decreases in recovery. The recovery loss is usually associated with losses of liberated and composite coarse material. This paper will review the practice of coarse particle flotation, including the reagent chemistry, cell hydrodynamics, froth stability, entrainment and flotation cell design, all parameters important to the recovery of coarse liberated and composite particles. This will provide a better understanding of opportunities to improve the recovery of coarse particles. Some examples will be provided.

The growth and influence of Sherritt Gordon Mines Ltd. in the nickel producing industry has been quite phenomenal. Although the company's Lynn Lake deposit in Manitoba was actually dis- covered in 1941, it was not until 1945, when men and materials were more readily available as a result of the end of World War II, that the area was staked and news of the discovery leaked out. As a result of the discovery, Professor Frank Forward of the University of British Columbia was commissioned by Eldon Brown, then President and Man- aging Director of Sherritt, to develop a new nickel refining process. A pilot plant, based on the results of Professor Forward's research, was constructed in Ottawa, and after the successful testing of the Lynn Lake ore, Chemical Construction Co. was given a con- tract in 1952 for construction of a producing plant. By 1954, the Fort Saskatchewan refinery was operating at an annual production of 15 million lb of nickel metal in the form of briquetts or powder. Capacity has since been increased to 30 million lb.

"Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) is gaining increasing acceptance as a decision-support tool by which to evaluate the environmental performance of a product, process or service. This is evidenced by its inclusion in international policy documents (for example in the European Union’s Integrated Product Policy) and in environmental management standards (the ISO 14 040 series of environmental management codes relate to LCA). In response to this, the minerals industry has conducted a number of commodity-specific LCAs. These include studies for global production of a number of commodities including copper, nickel, aluminium and steel. In addition, a number of minerals companies profess to use LCA as part of their suite of project and technology assessment tools. Often, this collected use represents more a situation of “we do this because we’re told it’s good for business” rather than from any demonstrable evidence of this fact. This has led to a situation of much confusion and disillusionment within the industry, exacerbated by the obvious current limitations of LCA to accurately reflect the environmental performance of minerals and metals.Our point of departure here is that LCA, conforming as it does to the tenets of environmental systems analysis, is a valuable starting point, and that there is merit in exploring to what extent the methodology can be enhanced to better reflect the environmental performance of minerals and metals. Specifically, we explore here the further development of LCA to address the following:• Land Use issues• Consumption of Abiotic Resources including metallic and non-metallic minerals, water and soil)• Human and Eco-toxicity issues relating to mobility and bio-availability of metals• Salinityand address these through selected experimental and simulation case studies relating to energy- and base minerals production. Advances resulting from the United Nations Environment Programme/Society for Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry Life Cycle Initiative are presented in that they directly affect the application of LCA to mining, minerals and metals. Comments are offered on how best the mining and minerals industry might interface with future developments resulting from this Initiative in order that the Initiative can deliver outcomes which render LCA a useful tool for decision making in mining and minerals processing."

This is the second in a series of Bureau of Mines reports which de-scribe experiments designed to devise an efficient, economic mechanical fragmentation technique for hard rock. The previous study described the development of the ripper cutting technique to successfully cut hard rock with 3-to 6-in-wide drag cutters. This study was conducted to test the ripper cutting technique at full scale using 9-in-wide drag cutters. The experiments were conducted with a special test device that cut shallow, 6-by 6-ft openings in 9,200-lbf/in2 compressive-strength concrete blocks. The tests showed that ripper cutting can excavate large-scale openings of the type required by the mining industry at a production rate that outperforms the conventional drill-blast technique. Moreover, the system can produce openings of various sizes and shapes, is simple to oper-ate and maintain, and produces very little dust or noise during operation. The system appears to meet all of the criteria for a successful hard-rock mining machine.

"Acid mine drainage can be controlled by water treatment, retardation of the pyrite oxidation reaction system, or enhanced prediction that allows preventive action to be taken. The Bureau of Mines is conducting research in each of these areas; the results of this research are summarized in the eight papers that comprise this volume. Field work to evaluate overburden analysis, alkaline injection, and bactericidal control of acid formation is described, along with two new inexpensive methods to treat acid mine water. These papers were prepared for an acid mine drainage technology transfer meeting held in Pittsburgh, PA, on April 3 and 4, 1985. INTRODUCTIONAcid drainage from coal mines is one of the most persistent industrial pollution problems in the United States. Over 5,000 miles of streams and rivers are adversely affected, primarily by underground mines that have been abandoned for decades. Meanwhile, at active mining operations and at sites where mining occurred after 1977, discharge water must be treated to meet fairly stringent regulatory limits--at a cost to the industry of over $1 million per day.The Bureau of Mines has a special responsibility to facilitate integration of mining and mineral processing with environmental safeguards. This responsibility is twofold: the development of techniques to reduce or eliminate environmental degradation, and the improvement of existing pollution control processes to make them more efficient and more cost effective. Research in acid mine drainage exemplifies the Bureau's concern for these environmental aspects of mining.This collection of papers summarizes much of the Bureau's recent research on acid mine drainage and will give the reader a sense of where the research is headed, in addition to providing details regarding new technology and recently acquired knowledge. "Dry Jet Mixing (DJM) method as the representative deep mixing technique has been demonstrating best practice on ground mitigation works coping with complicated soil condition and limited site space. This technique plays an important role in many projects to stabilize soft ground involving troubles like sliding failure, settlement, bearing capacity etc. Serious disasters caused larger earthquakes make great demand on the application of deep soil mixing these days. Special design and alignment of deep soil mixing has been established against to liquefaction and serious failure due to liquefaction. In this paper, representative example of liquefaction mitigation by DJM method is summarized. The paper also present result of surveillance of sites installed DJM col umns after attack by Tohoku Pacific Ocean Earthquake. Performance of DJM columns suffered the earthquake is demonstrated at several sites even with conventional column alignment.INTRODUCTIONThe DJM method is a representative deep soil mixing technique of dry mixing manner in Japan. DJM can successfully install soil mixing columns trough automatically controlled binder injection based on pneumatic feeding theory and cumulative experiences.This method was joint-developed in 1978 by private organization under initiative of the Public Works Research Institute of the Ministry of Construction as the optimum method for improving the Japanese soft ground. Figure 1 shows full view of the DJM construction system. Figure 2 illustrates DJM working system indicating Binder Feeding Plant side and Mixing Machine side respectively.As typical soil mitigation method, many projects related with rivers and roads and city development has required DJM technology. The total number of the projects applying DJM has exceeded 5,000 with the total treated soil volume more than 32,000,000 m3 by the end of fiscal year 2013."

"The Athabasca Basin occupies about 100,000 km2 of the northwest corner of Saskatchewan with its western margin extending about 50 km into Alberta (Fig. 1). The basin is filled with a Helikian sequence of predominantly fluvial sandstones up to 1600 m thick. The sandstone beds are generally flat-lying, and rest unconformably on a crystalline basement which consists mostly of granitic intrusive complexes and quartzfeldspar- biotite gneisses. The basement rocks represent Aphebian sediments and Archaean basement rocks that were metamorphosed and remobilized to varying degrees during the Hudsonian Orogeny (ca 1800 Maj.Since 1968, three mining camps and several substantial unconformity-type uranium deposits have been discovered in the area (Figs. 1 and 2). These deposits lie along the unconformity surface, partially enclosed in sandstones, and partially in the basement rocks. The major deposits have elongate, pencil shaped orebodies that are parallel to the strike of underlying graphitic biotite gneisses. The total tonnage of uranium is in the order of 150,000 to 200,000 tonnes and mining grades range from 0.5 to 2.5 per cent U3O8.IntroductionUranium exploration started in Saskatchewan in 1945 when Jolliffe and Murphy headed field parties to investigate uranium occurrences on the north shore of Lake Athabasca (Kupsch, 1978). Their investigation lead to the development of the Beaverlodge camp in the following years. Some of the early prospectors were impressed by the fact that the uranium occurrences at Beaver lodge were centred on a thick sequence of unmetamorphosed arkosic redbeds which are now called the Martin Group. This sequence was referred to as the Athabasca Series by Christie (1949), and although some occurrences of uranium were found near Stony Rapids and Black Lake, the vast expanse of Athabasca sandstones south of Lake Athabasca was generally regarded as unpromising."

In this paper we present the results of preliminary investigations into the applicability of new laboratory scale tests for the prediction of operating gap and specific throughput in high pressure grinding rolls (HPGR). The work is a part of the CAMIRO HPGR research program being conducted at the University of British Columbia, which aims to develop a suite of small-scale tests and procedures for the selection and sizing of HPGRs. A focus of the presented study is to test sample types in terms of their terra-mechanics based characteristics and relate them to specific throughput and gap results from pilot HPGR testing on the same samples.

Hangingwall deformation monitoring at Kiruna mine is a major concern for Luossavaara- Kiirunavaara AB (LKAB) since underground production is deepening toward the town of Kiruna. In the quest for more effective monitoring techniques, LKAB decided to evaluate the ability of satellite-borne synthetic aperture radar (SAR) interferometry to monitor ground subsidence by generating continuous deformation maps from satellite radar images. While adopted by other geoscience-related industries, SAR interferometry is still relatively untested in the mining industry. This paper describes the basic principles of SAR interferometry and describes how subsidence is monitored at Kiruna mine. The encouraging results are discussed as well as the benefits (continuous deformation mapping, low cost, fast, etc.) and limitations (sensitivity to snow and vegetation cover) of the technique.

The rapidly expanding economy of the West, with its growth of heavy industry, and increased steel production, is primarily responsible for the refractory clay industry's concern over the adequacy of the clay supply in States of the Great Plains and Rocky Mountains. Hence, the investigation by the Federal Bureau of Mines of the occurrence and use of refractory clays in North Dakota, South Dakota, Nebraska, Wyoming, Colorado, Utah, New Mexico, and Arizona has been encouraged by the major consumers and producers of this commodity. The Wyoming investigation is a part of the national program devised to close gaps in the domestic supply of specific types of clays to determine their characteristics and properties and to provide information that will assist the refractory-clay industry. Forty-two locations of clay-bearing rock in 17 areas in Wyoming were examined (fig. 1). Location 3 was not examined during this survey. Its description was taken from an earlier report. Locations 20, 21, and 22 were previously reported but were, also, examined by the Bureau. No samples were collected from these locations because field examination indicated that the shales were not refractory grade. The Hulett, Aladdin, and Newcastle areas are discussed in the section on the Black Hills district; the other 14 areas are described separately.
