Abstract - Ore reserve estimation, based on sparse drill hole data, was conducted for a placer gold property in Nome, Alaska. A problem with sparse data is that random subdivision of the data into modelling and evaluation subsets (as is commonly done) becomes a problem, as random selection may result in biased/skewed subsets. Therefore, a technique that combined data segmentation with genetic algorithms (GA) was applied to divide the samples into three equivalent subsets: training, validation and testing. Data segmentation was done on the basis of the distribution of gold values. Neural network and a variety of kriging techniques were used to estimate gold grades. A multi-layer feed forward neural network along with "early/quick stop" training was used for neural network modelling. A comparative evaluation of kriging and neural network methods was then performed. The results revealed that neural network was generally superior to the kriging techniques for gold grade estimation in the Nome deposit.

Foster-Miller Associates has developed a set of guidelines to permit hoist manufacturers, mine owners, and MESA mine inspectors to design, purchase, install or inspect a safe and effective Emergency Escape Hoist, as required by the Coal Mine Health and Safety act of 1969. A series of surveys were carried out to determine: 1. The attitudes and local needs of the MESA District Managers. 2. Current escape hoist installations. 3. Equipment available for future designs. 4. Foreign methods and equipment for mine rescue. From these survey studies, preliminary guideline objectives were developed.

This paper considers the current methods of analysis employed, the validity of assumptions made and the reliability of results and predictions derived; where appropriate, alternative methods are proposed which are more accurate and can be applied with greater confidence. In regard to data collection, new local blasting data has been analysed and conclusions drawn but, due to the restricted amount of space available, reference to data set A only has been made in the text. The problem of mathematical model choice is considered and results for two and three parameter power laws are compared. The very important matter of parameter determination is discussed fully, with major emphasis being placed on the comparative merits of log-log linear, log-log planar and direct power law regression. Supporting data analysis examples are included. Assumptions regarding the normality of ‘best-fit’ regression model residual distributions are questioned and the reliability of associated safety limit determinations is discussed.

In the Coastal Plain sedimentaries of northeastern Mississippi, high-alumina clays and kaolins, which are bauxitized locally to varying degrees, are found in many places along the contact between the Midway (Paleocene) and the Wilcox (Eocene) series. The trace of the contact extends from Tippah County, on the Tennessee border, south to Winston County, thence southeast to Lauderdale County, and into Alabama. Its length within Mississippi, disregarding sinuosities, is 185 miles (fig. 1). Commercial production of bauxite from the region has amounted to about 400 tons, shipped from one outcrop in Komper County. In December 1941 and January 1942, the Bureau of Mines and the Federal Geological Survey made a reconnaissance survey of the contact zone and selected the most promising areas for further study. In 1942, four areas in Benton, Union, and Pontotoc Counties were investigated by auger and rotary core drilling, and in 194, core drilling was done on five areas in Kemper, Noxubee, and Winston Counties. The present report records the work done by the. Bureau of Mines and the factual data obtained from the investigations of the nine areas in the two projects.

"Potash processing has much in common in terms of unit operations and plant operating strategy with other mineral processing plants. As it is a rather large topic the processes will be broad brushed to give you some background and then I will go into a little detail on the things we do in the Cominco plant that may be of interest to the group as a whole. In particular the centrallized computer control system and associated instrumentation and the operator training programs will be covered as well as the mill fire, something that could happen in any plant. THE ORE AND PRODUCTSThere are differences in potash ores as you would expect. It is my intention to deal with the ores processed in the Saskatoon area. These are mined from the beds in the Patience Lake Member and have a mineralogical description as follows:Sylvite (Potassium Chloride) 40%Halite (Sodium Chloride) 55%Insolubles (Slimes) 5%A number of products are made from this ore. It is characteristic of a potash plant that you put as much effort into grading and converting the sylvite to meet market requirements as you do in recovering it."

This report documents the three-phase program to design, fabricate, test, and demonstrate economical and practical methods of reducing noise levels on underground coal mining portal buses (mantrip vehicles). The noise-control treatments applied to a production-model portal bus were as follows: ? Wheel/rail vibrations were isolated from the vehicle frame by inserting elastomeric materials between suspension components. ? Vibration-induced noise was reduced by replacing all large sheet metal panels (except floor plates) with damped steel panels. ? Motor noise was reduced by tight-fitting covers made from damped steel and lined with sound-absorbing material, and by elastomeric motor mounts. ? The standard spur gears used in the traction drive system were replaced with helical gearsets. The program achieved the goal of reducing the average sound-level to below 85 dBA for typical operating conditions.

The ore of Sarcheshmeh copper deposit that has been located in the south ?east of Iran, contains four type of rock that they have their specific hardness and strength according to their alteration type and mineralization. Blasting of these various types of mine rocks prepares various types of size for the product of mine as the feed of concentration. Along the crushing of this feed a few factors effect on the efficiency of the crushing unit. The aim of this project has been the consideration of the effect of ore size on the efficiency of crushing unit. For this investigation along the year 2000 A.D., six sample from feed and six sample from product of crushing unit have been prepared. The results of the screen analyze of these samples has shown that the size of feed has been lesser than the primary plan and the size rate of the product has been bigger than the primary plan. Also in this research the effect of feed size on the quality of product size has been considered.

One goal of the Bureau of Mines is to conserve the Nation's mineral resources by developing improved performance materials. Consistent with this goal, the Bureau conducted studies on the formation of undesirable cristobalite in seven different fire clays used as refractories. The studies employed scanning electron micrography, chemical and X-ray analyses, and pyrometric cone equivalent determinations to examine the sample clays and determine the effect of thermal history and stablilizing additives on the amount of cristobalite in various calcines. This research has indicated that as fire clay calcining temperatures increased from 1390° to 1,490° C there was a gradual decrease in the percent of cristobalite present in the calcines and a progressive development of mullite crystallization. No cristobalite was found in fire clays calcined above 1,550° C, but cristobalite reappeared when the calcines were reheated to temperatures between 1,400° and 1,500° C. The research also revealed that additions of lithium fluoride (LiF) prevented formation of cristobalite in fire clay calcines.

This publication is one of a series prepared by the Federal Bureau of Mines on methods and costs of producing uranium ore on the Colorado Plateau. The information it contains was gathered in 1955-58 and applies to eight small operations. (See fig. 1.) Mining costs have increased since the data were I collected, but the information should be helpful in estimating future costs I at similar deposits. The Bureau of Mines had early experience in the production of carnotite-type ores on the Colorado Plateau.3 4/ Under a cooperative agreement with the National Radium Institute in 1914-16, the Bureau mined and concentrated carnotite ore for recovery of radium, uranium, and vanadium. The ore was taken from claims in or near Long Park Montrose County, Colo., about 3 mi. south of La Salle Mining Co.'s La Salle mine, which is one of the mines described in this report. The Bureau leased the claims from Crucible Steel Mining & Milling Co., a subsidiary of Crucible Steel Co. of America, and from 1914 to 1916 produced 990 tons of high-grade ore, containing 2.6 pct. U308, and about 2,000 tons of mill-grade ore, containing 0.85 pct. U308. The high-grade ore was shipped directly to a radium-recovery plant built in Denver in 1914 under the cooperative agreement. There, commercial methods of extracting uranium, vanadium, and radium from carnotite ores were developed by Bureau personnel. The lower grade ore was concentrated at a small mill in Long Park before being shipped to Denver. The final recovery was 69,000 lb. of U308 and 8.8 g. of radium. The direct mining cost of producing the high-grade ore, including the labor to hand sort and sack it, was $35.96 per ton. Freighting the ore 58 miles to Placerville, Colo., the nearest rail point on the Rio Grande Southern Railway, cost $25.28 per ton, which included $4.55 per ton for ore bags and twine. A cobalt/manganese occurrence in Clark County, Nevada was the subject of a site-specific mineral investigation by the U.S. Bureau of Mines in 1988-90. The study site is in the northern part of the Million Hills (wilderness) study area which is administered by the Bureau of Land Management. Field work during a period of one week consisted of geological mapping and sampling of workings and outcrops, and geochemical and geophysical surveys conducted on four transects totalling 7,600 ft. Although the concentrations of cobalt (0.1 to 0.5 percent) detected in samples from the fissure zones are within the range of grades associated with world-class economic deposits, the volume of material enriched in cobalt at the study site is insufficient to warrant consideration as a potential resource. Concentrations of manganese, nickel, copper, lead, zinc, barium, and thallium, although anomalous, are too low for economic consideration. At the study site, workings consist of three trenches and nine pits. The exploration history is unknown, and no production is reported.

The basic objective of this project was to determine the permeability of coal fracture systems as a function of effective stress. The detailed steps in accomplishing this objective are given in Article I of the contract under which the work was conducted as follows: Sec. 1.1 The objective shall be to determine the permeability of the coal fracture system as a function of effective stress. At least three bituminous coals shall be studied and at least five samples of each coal shall be tested. The sample size shall be as large as possible to be representative of coal found in the seam; a minimum of four inches is preferred.

Cu-Ag-Au mineralisation at Kluwih prospect in Eastern Java, Indonesia is related to a high-sulfidation hydrothermal system within a volcanic dome (2.35 × 1.7 km diameter). The mineralisation occurs mainly in steeply dipping, structurally-controlled quartz-enargite-pyrite veins (several centimetres to 2 m wide) and is hosted mainly in porphyritic dacite, volcaniclastic rocks and volcanic breccia of the dome and in an underlying andesite that yielded a zircon U-Pb age of 11.5 Ma.Short wave infrared spectrometer analyses were carried out for alteration mapping at Kluwih. There are two main stages of alteration produced by the hydrothermal activity. The alteration mineral assemblages indicate an advanced argillic alteration. The Cu mineralisation occurred in the form of enargite and subordinate chalcopyrite with an intergrown texture in the early stage. These mineralised veins are characterised by narrow pyrophyllite ± diaspore and dickite selvages (metres wide) and a peripheral K-muscovite envelope (sericitic alteration) up to 100 m wide. The K-muscovite envelope is zoned outward to Na-muscovite or Na-illite. Late-stage kaolinite and smectite alteration overprints the porphyritic dacite and may obscure the nature of early mica-clay alteration. The spatial distribution of different alteration assemblages suggests that the temperature of hydrothermal fluid increases with depth.Both the high-sulfidation mineralisation and advanced argillic alteration are suggested to be related to magmatic-hydrothermal fluids, which are likely to originate from an undiscovered deeper porphyry Cu-Au system below the porphyritic dacite. Based on alteration mapping results and comparisons to similar deposits, the porphyry intrusion could be up to 500 m below the volcanic dome. Further geochemical and mineralogical studies may help to target the potential underlying porphyry system.CITATION:Chan, J S-L, 2015. Where space is limited, as it is throughout most of the northeastern United States, new construction either takes place high above street level, or below it. In Lower Manhattan, NY both kinds of expansion can be found in abundance. That is good news for the nearly 200 attendees at the George A. Fox Conference, presented by the Underground Construction Association (UCA) of SME at the Graduate Center, City University of New York, on Jan. 30. Among the many projects taking place in Lower Manhattan?s massive trans-formation process, are expansions to the city?s vast underground network of subways and other tunnels. ?New Yorkers either live on the ground or below it,? said keynote speaker Charles J. Maikish while explaining how an attempt to build above street level walkways never caught on in the city. Maikish is the executive director of the Lower Manhattan Construction Command Center. His job is to oversee the $22 billion project that will transform the island by 2010. From the construction of Freedom Tower at the site of the fallen World Trade Center buildings, to the expansion of the Second Avenue Subway, the extension of the East Side Access, No. 7 line, the new trans-Hudson line and numerous waterway tunnel expansions, including City Water Tunnel No. 3, the task Maikish is charged with is a huge one. He is primarily responsible for coordinating the scheduling and staging of the overall rebuilding plan, along with the day-to-day coordination of construction work down-town. He places particular focus on mitigating impacts on the environment and mobility, maintaining and improving access and alleviating congestion of any kind related to construction. At the time of the Fox Conference, there were 59 projects under way in Manhattan. All of those projects need things like concrete and steel delivered to sites in very tight working environments. And some need the equipment in even tighter spaces. ?This is not just about the recovery of Lower Manhat-tan (from the 2001 terrorist attacks) but this is a plan to restore it and to maintain its integrity,? said Maikish. ?I think that is the appropriate response to the terrorist attacks.? When Freedom Tower is completed, it will stand 541 m (1,776 ft) about the skyline. That will be a strong statement to the world about America?s strength. But it is the work that takes place much lower that was of interest to the conference attendees. On this respect, Maikish said Manhattan?s efforts below ground aim to provide relief to the city?s street level congestion and to make sure Manhattan ? already essential to the economy of the United States and the world ? stays current by upgrading the existing telecommunications and technological network while also allowing room for growth in that area.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines, in cooperation with the Iron Range Resources and Rehabilitation Board, investigated the potential of using northeastern Minnesota papermill waste sludges as a binder for Mesabi Range iron ore (taconite) concentrate. Sludges from five different commercial papermill waste treatment operations were evaluated in laboratory tests. Except for the coarsest sludge, all were fairly easy to blend with the taconite concentrate using conventional mixing methods. The coarsest sludge had to be reslurried at 2 pct solids before adding it to the concentrate in order to obtain pellets without visible sludge clumps. Drying and grinding the sludges made them less effective as binders because of a lower degree of rehydration. On a dry weight equivalent basis, twice as much raw sludge binder was required to obtain similar pellet physical properties as with bentonite; however, the pellets made with raw sludge had superior metallurgical properties. Over 30 pct higher reduction rates and over 1500 C higher softening temperatures were obtained with sludge binder than with bentonite. Sludge D, which had the lowest fiber and the highest alkali metal content, resulted in the lowest reducibility enhancement. Even though more raw sludge was required than bentonite, the sludges have virtually no value, and therefore may provide a cost-effective additive binder for producing improved metallurgical-quality pellets. Large-scale testing has not been done to confirm these laboratory results.

This paper presents the results of a case study conducted in a two-entry gateroad in a coal mine where excessive roof deformation and bolt loading resulted in failure of many roof supports. The instruments consisted of 16 fully grouted, strain-gaged resin bolts, load cells on both full and partially grouted cable bolts, and vertical deflection multipoint extensometers. These instruments were installed on-cycle to measure loading on bolts in an existing support pattern and to determine if cable bolts could be used to improve roof stability. Results showed significant amounts of movement within the bolted zone. In some cases, these movements were enough to load the supports past their ultimate strength. Geology appeared to be a significant factor in localized roof degradation; that is, a very weak rock layer in the immediate roof overlain by a very strong rock layer contributed to the development of shear planes. Only one instrumented bolt had a maximum strain of less than 2,000 microstrain, which was the yield point of the steel. The average maximum strain on all bolts was 20,000 microstrain. However, electrical continuity to many gages was lost and a pattern was noted that would indicate possible bolt failure. Wire mesh and concrete cans installed as secondary support performed very effectively.

1972 constituted the second year of the projected five-year study on constitutive relations of coal. The schedule adhered closely to the five-year outline which is summarized in Table 1. This chapter is intended to serve as introduction and concise synopsis of the year's activities and results, which are presented in greater detail in the following chapters, which have been contributed by the individual researchers in charge of the various aspects of the project under study. Coal Sources, Material Procurement, and Sample Preparation Most of the studies performed during 1972 were done on coal from two sources: the Old Ben Mine #22 in Illinois, and the Bruceton Mine in the Pittsburgh seam of Pennsylvania, which may be considered typical of coal sources of economic importance in the Midwestern and Eastern part of the U.S. These two mines have proven to be reliable suppliers of coal material for our research. We have been able to establish good working relations with their personnel and feel that we can continue to count on their cooperation and help.

Montana sapphires were first discovered in alluvial deposits in the Helena area in 1865 and subsequently were discovered in other alluvial deposits in southwestern Montana and also in a lamprophyre dike at Yogo in central Montana. From about 1900 until the late 1930?s, when synthetic sapphire began to come into widespread industrial use, Montana sapphire mines produced large quantities mainly for watch bearings with lesser production for the gemstone market. The Yogo deposit is now mined for the gemstone market and two of the alluvial deposits are mined to produce sapphires for the fee-sieving of sapphire-bearing gravel and for the direct sale of gemstones. The generally pale-colored sapphires from the alluvial deposits in southwestern Montana are heated to enhance their colors whereas the generally blue sapphires from the Yogo deposit require no treatment. Markets for sapphires from both the alluvial deposits and the Yogo deposit are strong. In spite of reported historic production in excess of 70 tonnes, mineable resources appear to remain at most major deposits. Also abundant untested lamprophyre dikes in central Montana may host sapphires similar to those at the Yogo deposit.

The coal-bearing regions of Colorado cover approximately 29,600 square miles, which is 28.4 percent of the state's total area. The most important coal-bearing regions are located in the north western and west-central parts of Colorado. Coal resources vary from lignite to anthracite. More than 70 percent are bituminous; 23 percent subbituminous; 5 percent lignite; and less than 1 percent anthracite. The state's coal reserves total about 17.2 billion tons, 3.5 percent of national reserves. Approximately 8.8 million acres of coal rights in the state are owned by the Federal Government; on about 72percent of this land, the Federal Government controls both the coal and the surface rights. It is estimated that approximately 4.2 billion tons of coal reserves are under federal ownership in Colorado. Permitted acreage of mines in Colorado ranges from 40 to 13,114 acres. Differences in elevation create many climatic zones in Colorado. Local annual precipitation can average less than eight inches in some areas in extreme western Colorado to more than 30 inches in certain mountainous areas. Generally, precipitation rates are low at most mine sites, making revegetation difficult. Colorado gained primacy when its regulatory program was conditionally approved December 15,1980. The Abandoned Mine Land Program was approved June 11, 1982.

The effect of molecular weight, charge and the presence of the cations Ca2+, Mg2+and K+ on the adsorption of carboxymethyl cellulose on pure talc obtained from Balmat, New York have been investigated. Higher adsorption densities were obtained in the presence ofCa2+ and Mg2+ ions than with K+ ions and higher ionic strength solutions resulted in higher adsorption densities. Changing the molecular weight did not influence the adsorption however increasing the charge (DS) of the polymers resulted in lower adsorption densities.

The headwaters of Skippers Creek and the Shotover River are reputed to be among the richest alluvial gold catchments in the world. This alluvial gold has no doubt been derived from reef systems similar to, and associated with, the Bullendale lodes. Physiographically the prospect covers steep ridges and deeply incised gullies between the Richardson Mountains in the west and the Harris Mountains in the east. Vegetation is mainly tussock with bush either side of Murdochs Creek. Access to the area is by metalled road to Skippers and then by 4WD track to Bullendale. Alternatively the prospect area can be reached by helicopter from Queenstown in around ten minutes.
