This report documents the status of a laser-based underground guidance system for tracking and controlling the movements of underground mobile mining equipment. This research is part of a multiple project effort at the U.S. Bureau of Mines to increase mine safety and efficiency by developing technology for computer-assisted mining. Guidance systems, which can track and control the movements of underground mining equipment, are essential during computer-assisted mining operations. A continuous mining machine at the Bureau's surface test facility served as the test-bed for initial development and experimentation of this guidance system. Subsequently, a continuous mining machine in an underground mine served as the platform for in-mine experimentation The first section of this report includes details of the laser sensors, communication network, and computer hardware. The next section includes experimental results, which show the system capable of accurately tracking and controlling the tram maneuvers of a continuous miner underground. The final section discusses conclusions and recommendations.

This program was to develop a new base line system for automated continuous room and pillar type mining. The primary requirement estab¬lished for this machine is that the machine be capable of mining and bolting simultaneously. Additionally, this machine was to provide temporary and permanent roof control, have a productive - full - face semi-automatic mining system, leave a clean entry outby the machine, provide maximum operator protection, provide effective dust suppression and provide air scrubbing to restrict respirable dust to permissible levels. The machine has effectively demonstrated the ability to mine and bolt simultaneously. Additional above ground operation, testing, and time studies are recommended to further verify the machines abilities. Design improvements are recommended for future generation AES machines. These relate to marginal design areas such as side loading on vent duct lift cylinders, etc., that will not impair additional testing of the existing machine.

This paper reviews how uncertainty has been dealt with over the past 40 years using the decision making cycle as a frame of reference. The review of the phases of this cycle, as applied to rockmechanics and rock engineering, namely characterization, performance analysis, updating and decision making shows that in each, progress has been made over the past 40 years, although most of the basic concepts existed already in the 1960’s. Characterization is the area in which the greatest scientific steps were taken, this phase and performance analysis also gained from the tremendously expanded computational capabilities which allow one to use both more complex and more practically oriented models. The greatest practical advance is without using any doubt in risk based decision making although its acceptance shows interesting differences between different professions. Dans l’article suivant on utilise le cycle de décision pour illustrer le développement du traitement des incertitudes en mécanique des roches et en construction en roche dans les quarante années passées. La revue des phases du cycle de décision montre qu’on a fait du progrès dans chaque phase du cycle de décision, c’est à dire dans la caractérisation, dans l’analyse et la prédiction du comportement, dans l’actualisation et dans l’acte de décision, même si les concepts fondamentaux existaient déjà dans les années 1960. Les plus grands avancements scientifiques se trouvent dans le domaine de la caractérisation tandis que l’analyse prédictive profitait du développement de l’informatique qui a mené à des modèles plus complexes mais aussi plus pratiques. Le plus grand progrès est sans doute dans le domaine de l’acte de décision sur la base des risques. Ce procédé est devenu assez commun même s’il y a encore des différences d’acceptation entre différentes professions. Black Mountain, a polymetallic base metal mine located in the Northern Cape territory of South Africa has been blessed with high grade economic ore for many years. Now that the Broken Hill orebody is nearing the end of its life, a lower grade orebody (Swartberg) is being exploited to supplement production from Broken Hill. In addition, ore from stopes in the upper levels of the Broken Hill orebody is considerably tarnished (oxidized). As a natural result, the remaining ore contains a higher percentage of magnetite, pyrrhotite and pyrite than in earlier years. Bismuth, cadmium and cobalt also occur in the ore in higher quantities. The life of the mine has been lengthened with the discovery of further deeper-lying ore reserves extending from the Broken Hill orebody suitably called the Deeps section. However, to bridge the gap between development of the new reserve and the exhaustion of the old reserve, these lower grade and tarnished (oxidized) ores have to be treated. The mine has had reasonable success in identifying unfavourable or problematic ore types and stockpiling them separately to blend in small quantities with more favourable ore. Bench and plant scale tests have aided identification of the various ore types and significant improvements in flotation metallurgical results have been seen. Copper, lead and zinc metal occur as sulphides in the ore. The mill consists of a differential and sequential flotation process that extracts copper concentrate, lead concentrate and zinc concentrate respectively with silver metal recovered in the copper and lead concentrates. This paper describes the ore blending strategy employed at the mine to maximize the econo-metallurgical efficiency of the operation.

The Silver Line Phase III Project is the final one mile underground segment of the new Bus Rapid Transit in downtown Boston. The project is expected to significantly reduce existing and anticipated traffic congestion. The twin one-lane tunnels and two station platforms will be built by NATM in Boston saturated soft clay, sand and till layers in proximity to several historical buildings, underpinning two existing cut and cover subway stations and several major utilities in densely built urban area. This paper presents the analysis and design of the NATM tunnels and stations detailing the excavation sequence and support system and various ground improvement and pre-support techniques used in the preliminary and final design of the project

In constructing a financial model of a project significant effort is expended on capital and operating cost estimation, commodity price forecasts, and choice of discount rates while uncertainty in the primary input, the reserve, is often completely overlooked. The aim of this paper is to highlight the impact of uncertainty in the resource/reserve estimation process on the assessment of the financial performance of a project. Four qualitative processes have an impact on resource/reserve uncertainty. These stages are: 1.Ore definition 2.Geological interpretation 3.Resource estimation 4.Ore reserve estimation and mine planning. Each stage contains a number of tasks that may be considered as key performance activities (KPAs). Optimizing the manner in which these KPAs are completed can remove a great deal of uncertainty and error from the resource/reserve process. Examination of these KPAs within a company can also provide an insight to the quality of the information underlying the project. This will allow the company to identify any shortcomings in the data and to assess the resulting risks (Gilfillan, 1998). A hypothetical financial model based on a gold operation has been used to estimate the potential effect of resource/reserve uncertainty on revenue. Monte Carlo simulation has been employed to simulate a number of hypothetical scenarios: 1.a base case scenario which assumes no major errors or biases, but contains realistic margins for uncertainty that would exist in any project where work is being completed to the limit of best endeavours 2.a poor sampling scenario which assumes poor sampling practice and lack of understanding of sample preparation 3.a poor resource estimation scenario which assumes poor modelling and inappropriate choice of interpolation technique, and 4. a ?typical? scenario which represents a project where the majority of KPAs are not performed as best as they could be. The results show that realistic uncertainty ranges can generate changes in the estimate of potential revenue of plus or minus 30%.Therefore, it is important to allow for errors in these processes in any financial analysis or feasibility study. It is recommended that, when building a financial model, are view of relevant resource/reserve KPAs be carried out and appropriate ranges for uncertainty be applied to provide a range of potential outcomes. These outcomes can then be factored into the detailed cash flow analysis in order to ensure that technical uncertainty is built into financial decisions.

The Myra Falls deposits comprise a complexly metal-zoned polymetallic volcanogenic massive sulfide district located 90 km from Campbell River in central Vancouver Island, British Columbia, Canada. The massive sulfide deposits are hosted by subaqueously-deposited rocks of the Devonian age Myra Formation of the Sicker Group volcanic assemblage. The deposits comprise many individual massive sulfide lenses grouped into several major zones within two main felsic volcanic stratigraphic intervals - the upper Lynx-Myra-Price Horizon and the lower H-W Horizon. The largest of these zones, the H-W and Battle, occur within the H-W Horizon. The first claims in the area of what is now Boliden-Westmin?s Myra Falls Operations were staked in 1917. Early prospecting resulted in the discovery of three massive sulfide showings which eventually became the Lynx, Myra and Price mines. Sporadic exploration was carried out until 1961 when Western Mines Ltd. (now Boliden-Westmin Ltd.) acquired the claims. Subsequent ore definition outlined 1.9 million tonnes of ore (approximately 5 years of mine life) in the Lynx deposit, and mining began in 1966. Pre-mining geological reserves (to January 1, 1997) comprised 6.7 million tonnes grading 3.3 g/t Au, 130.6 g/t Ag, 2.0 % Cu, 1.4 % Pb and 10.2 % Zn for the Lynx-Myra-Price deposits, 17.1 million tonnes grading 2.3 g/t Au, 32.7 g/t Ag, 2.3 % Cu, 0.3 % Pb and 4.2 % Zn for the H-W deposits and 4.2 million tonnes grading 1.1 g/t Au, 27.0 g/t Ag, 2.2 % Cu, 0.5 % Pb and 12.0 % Zn for the Battle deposits. Property-wide production to January, 1996 has been 15.7 million tonnes grading 2.1 g/t Au, 58.7 g/t Ag, 1.9 % Cu, and 5.2 % Zn.

Quartz veins from the Martha Hill epithermal gold-silver deposit, Waihi, commonly exhibit crustiform banded textures. Visual differences observed between bands are primarily the result of a 1 to 1500 ¦m variation in quartz grain size. Quartz band textures are dominated by anhedral interlocking quartz mosaics, commonly associated with minor adularia and sulphide phases; these textures are interpreted to be products of amorphous silica crystallisation. The occurrence of rhombic adularia suggests that prolonged boiling influenced parent fluids. In contrast, the presence of coarsely crystalline bands, made up of subhedral to euhedral quartz grains, infers primary crystal growth from solution; evidenced by the occurrence of growth-zoned quartz within these bands. There is a narrow range of 3.3ë in d18Oquartz between maximum and minimum isotopic values for the deposit. Significant overlap in d18Oquartz values are observed between the Martha and Welcome lodes. However, statistically significant and commonly systematic differences do occur between individual bands analysed in most samples. Temperature fluctuations may be the dominant factor responsible for observed inter-band variation.

R.C. Rex, Jr. V. Rajaram's paper does not accurately reflect the status of Eastern oil shale development as it stands today. Today, there are numerous firms and research organizations pursuing development of the Eastern oil shale resource. Details of the current projects can be found in the symposium proceedings for the 1985 Eastern Oil Shale Symposium held in Lexington, KY, in November 1985. Additionally, the comparison of the Paraho and HYTORT processes is invalid because the HYTORT process design used it not an accurate representation of the HYTORT process. I will briefly address this point. It is disconcerting to see the author reference hydroretorting work conducted at the Institute of Gas Technology (IGT) (circa 1978) in the introduction, which indicates hydroretorting (the HYTORT process concept) yields of up to 250% of the Fischer Assay oil yield, and then turn around and base the remainder of the paper on the 1981 "Synthetic Fuels From Eastern Oil Shale Report," which depicts the HYTORT process as yielding only 115% of Fischer Assay. Indeed, work conducted at IGT to 1981 indicates commercial oil yields for the HYTORT process would be in the range of 200% to 210% of Fischer Assay. A more thorough literature search by the author would have yielded a 1981 publication by Schora et al., entitled "Update on the HYTORT Process" presented at the Symposium on Synthetic Fuels From Oil Shale in Nashville, TN, October 1981. This paper thoroughly discusses the shortcomings of the referenced study with respect to the HYTORT process. For the interested reader, I can also recommend a June 1984 report entitled "An Economic Comparison of Five Process Concepts for Using Eastern Oil Shale," published by Los Alomos National Laboratory (LA-10106-MS, Parkinson et al., NTIS No. DE84-015981). This study applies a realistic HYTORT design (circa 1982) and indicates that HYTORT is the most econom¬ical method of processing Eastern oil shales (about $20/bbl less than Paraho). Additionally, completion of the HYTORT feasibility study in June 1983 by Phillips Petroleum Co., Bechtel Group Inc., HYCRUDE Corp., and IGT has resulted in development of designs that will make the use of HYTORT on Eastern oil shales even more economic. HYCRUDE Corp., a second-tier subsidiary of IGT, is involved in commercialization and licensing of the HYTORT process and is active in efforts to develop the Eastern oil shale resource. As such, I am disappointed to see outdated material that has the potential for adversely affecting development of Eastern oil shale resources published in MINING ENGINEERING. I can only hope that this response will serve to mitigate any negative opinions that may have been formed. Today, activity in commercializing Eastern oil shales dominates the oil shale scene in the US and indicates a realization of the potential for these shales. Reply by V. Rajaram I appreciate the updates on the HYTORT process provided by R.C. Rex, Jr. I hope that Hycrude's work will lead to the funding of a pilot plant to demonstrate that yields of greater than 200% of Fischer Assay can be achieved in a commercial plant using eastern US oil shales.

A working group from Anglo American, BHP Billiton, Rio Tinto and Xstrata reviewed supply and demand for graduates from mining education departments in countries where they normally recruit: Australia, Canada, Chile, Western Europe, South Africa and USA. Departments are typically small and increasingly unsustainable, resulting in a steady rate of closure. Supply and demand for graduates in the minerals industry is cyclical, with supply lagging behind demand and trending downwards. Currently, supply is tight and the industry is trying to expand with an ageing workforce. Greater collaboration between universities and within the industry is recommended to address these issues.

The paper reviews the results to date of an integrated research programme currently being conducted by CSIR Mining Technology, aimed at impacting significantly on concentrated mining with face advance rates of up to 20 times faster than presently achieved. Consideration is given to the interplay between innovative technologies for continuous non-explosive mining or rock comminution underground and lateral hydraulic transportation in cross cuts, haulages and eventually hydro hoisting. Novel technologies for underground comminution of reef and development waste and an innovative pumping system suitable for the hydraulic transportation of coarse comminuted rock are reviewed. Emphasis is placed on South African gold mine reef and waste samples comminuted by electric shock wave comminution technology. The innovative TORE® pump system appears to be well suited for the successful hydraulic transportation of rock, produced by electric shock wave comminution, at solids concentrations between 45 % and 67 % by mass.

As part of the Bureau of Mines effort to establish a comprehensive subsidence data base for subsidence technology development, subsidence and related data are being compiled for various mining, geological, and environmental situations. This publication presents data for two longwall mining operations in the Northern Appalachian Coal Region. Vertical displacements and relative face positions are tabulated for 104 subsidence monuments. Brief physiographic and geological descriptions of the mining sites are presented along with a general account of the mining and subsidence monitoring methods.

Examples are presented in which Time Domain Reflectometry (TDR) was employed to locate deformation of rock masses induced by mining. The first example involved motoring the propagation of overburden fractures above a longwall coal panel and the second example involved the we of a)R to monitor rock mass deformation in the vicinity of a strip mine highwall. Bock mass deformation, strata separation and large block movement generated strains and failure along coaxial cables which were installed in drill holes and the TDR reflections generated by these strains and failures were monitored. Analysis of field data and a preliminary laboratory test indicate that it may be possible not only to locate rock mass movements but also to quantify these movements with TDR data.

Geological Parameters Controlling the Improvement of Manufactured Sand Using Vertical Shaft Impact Crushers Instead of Cone Crushers Natural sand is a limited resource. In Sweden the total use of natural sand and gravel is around 20 million tonnes per year and the goal is to halve the use of this resource in the near future. Most of this natural sand is used for concrete production, so the consequence of this goal is that more and more concrete must be produced with manufactured sand. The bedrock of Sweden consists mainly of granites and gneisses, rock types mainly composed of various amounts of quartz, feldspar and mica. Manufactured sand from these materials generally contains rather flaky and elongated grains, and there are few types of granite that can be used as manufactured sand in concrete without increasing the amount of cement by eight to ten per cent. A Vertical Shaft Impact crusher (VSI) is commonly used to improve the shape of coarse aggregate particles. Research has shown that it is even possible to improve the shape in aggregate fractions less than 1 mm for some rock types. The aim of this project was to investigate which geological parameters control the improvement of manufactured sand when using VSI-crushers instead of the traditionally used cone crusher. In order to do this eight rock types of granitic composition were investigated. The selection of rock materials for the tests was based on grain size and mica content. A 4 - 8 mm fraction of each material was used for the tests. The characterisation of the shape of the material was performed using image analysis applied on microscopic images. The results showed that the VSI-crusher had improved the shape of all materials down to 0.036 mm, except for one rock sample. According to these results granites with low mica content and relatively high content of feldspars have the best prerequisites to produce manufactured sand for concrete with suitable geometric characteristics, and if these materials are crushed with a VSI crusher they almost show the same characteristics as natural sand.

DURING the course of an investigation of the zirconium-iron-tin system the zirconium-iron system was reexamined up to 55 pct* Fe. The alloys pre- visible melting3 and X-ray diffraction studies were made of samples of the alloys. The ferromagnetic properties of ZrFe2were determined by Professor P. W. Selwood* using a modified Faraday balance.4 The zirconium-rich portion of the phase diagram is presented in Fig. 1 and compared with the work of Hayes et al.1 The maximum solubility of iron in ß is somewhat decreased while the eutectic temperature is raised. There seemed to be no change in the eutectic composition of 16 pct Fe. Since the base material was so low in iron content, it was possible to establish the maximum solubility in a between 0.017 and 0.025 pct Fe at the eutectoid temperature. The observation of fine ZrFe, particles in the micro structure of a specimen of 0.012 pct Fe alloy quenched from 700°C indicated that the solubility drops below this composition at 700° C and lower. Further study was made of the intermediate phase ZrFe2. wallbaum5 identified the compound initially as ZrFe2 with a C 15 (MgCu2) structure, placing it at 55 pct Fe stoichiometrically. Hayes et al.1 believed they found the phase at about 47.2 pct Fe and called it Zr2Fe3 but reverted to ZrFe, in the discussion of their paper.6 Jordan and Duwez7 confirmed Wallbaum's work as well as finding the same single-phase structure to about 62.3 pct Fe or Zr0-61 Fe2-18. In order to establish the ternary phase relations in the zirconium-iron-tin systema the exact position of this phase had to be known. This was accomplished by X-ray diffraction, visible melting, and metallographic techniques. Elliott8 obtained a single-phase ZrFe2 X-ray diffraction pattern from an alloy of about 55 pct Fe. This was confirmed in the present study with an alloy of 54.81 pct Fe. However, extra lines (attributable to a or ß zirconium) were found in diffraction patterns of the 47.42 and 49.83 pct Fe alloys. "One of the more challenging issues facing operators of U.S. mines and quarries is blasting in an environmentally acceptable way. It is quite important that industry management understand and apply guidance, discipline, and control in the exercise of blasting operations. This presentation is a discussion of problems related to that environment away from the blasthole that may or may not be adversely affected by blasting and the steps management may consider in resolving resultant problems. In any case, one of the main concerns that will continuously be brought up is thatmanagement procedures inherent to good blasting is a uxporate responsibility of the mine or quarry business entity; and can not be delegated to the explosive manufacturer or supplier. This management attitude, based on education, training, and the comprehension that the process of production begins with drilling and blasting and consumes a significant amount of overall production costs."

ALLUVIAL gold was first discovered in Guiana in 1852, in the sands of the Arataye river; by Paulino, a Brazilian convict. During the following years, gold was found also in the rivers Orapu, Cirubé, etc. In 1873 the famous placers of the Sinnamary system were opened: Saint-Elie, Dieu-Merci, Adieu-Tat, and Couriége. This group of mines has produced nearly $10,000,000, according to official records, not including the gold that escaped the taxes. The discoverer was a mulatto named Vitalo. Except in a few rich spots, the gold was rather evenly distributed along the creeks. In one instance, gold was found in the red dirt from the slope of a hill, which, after transport to the creek, gave an amount of 150 kilograms. The placers of the Mana system, Enfin, Elysée, Pas-Trop-Tot, date from 1878, and their production has been about $5,000,000. In 1888, the Awa placers, along the boundary between the French and Dutch Guianas, on the Maroni and its tributaries, were discovered. They have yielded $12,000,000. The only industrial company,, the Dutch Guiana French Mining Co., produced in 15 years about 2,500 kg. of gold, worth $1,500,000. From 1893 dates the famous Carsewene discovery, in territory then in dispute between France and Brazil. A settlement was made recently in favor of Brazil, by arbitration of the Switzerland State Council. Carsewene is said to have pro-duced about $18,000,000 in six years (1894-1900), but not even one-fourth of the production went through French Guiana and

"As part of a Nation-wide program of the United States Government to develop natural resources, funds were made available to the Bureau of Mines for the investigation of the ""Reduction of Iron Ores by Solid and Gaseous Fuels."" These investigations are concerned with the direct production of iron from its ores without the use of a blast furnace. Many processes have been proposed for the low-temperature reduction of iron oxides, but few have been developed to commercial use. High-quality sponge iron is produced com-mercially only in Sweden.The cost of iron production depends in part on the grade of the ore and increases with decrease in grade. The substitution of cheap natural gas in a sponge-iron process for expensive coke in smelting in the blast fry pace would partly compensate for the use of low-grade ores. If a process can be developed in which inexpensive natural gas can be used as fuel and reducing agent, the large deposits of low-grade iron ore and the natural-gas resources of east Texas may be utilized in the commercial production of sponge iron.Sponge iron may possibly be used to supplement scrap iron, pig iron, or, in special instances, wrought iron. Sponge iron will vary but slightly in composition and will contain little or no nickel, cobalt, manganese, copper, and other allowying metals. It is becoming increasingly difficult to obtain choice scrap iron of nonalloy composition. Pig iron contains 1.5 to 3.0 percent silicon and 3.0 to 4.5 percent carbon. Sponge iron generally contains less carbon than pig iron.The Madaras Steel Corp. in Longview, Tex., built a set commercial-scale sponge-iron plant which was intended to be operated in connection with a steel foundry. The process is based upon the reduction of preheated iron ore, with hot reducing gases under pulsating pressure. Although the Madaras Corp. had previously experimented with the production of sponge iron by reducing the ore with pure hydrogen, several attempts to use a re-formed natural gas as the reducing agent in this pilot plant were unsuccessful. The Bureau of Mines leased this plant and conducted an extensive investigation of the Madaras process on a semicommercial scale.The experiments were not entirely satisfactory, partly because of mechanical difficulties and partly because the reducing gas was not of the best quality. However, much information on the production of reducing gas by re-forming natural gas and on the reduction of iron ore with re-formed natural gas was obtained.The sponge iron produced contained approximately 0.1 percent phosphorus; and, after melting in an electric furnace, the iron contained approximately 0.15 percent phosphorus. The results of attempts to improve the ore by ore-dressing methods were not encouraging."
