In his time on earth, man has mined about 93.3 kt (3 billion oz) of gold. About one-half of this has been produced in the past 35 years. Roughly one-third of this gold is held as reserve in Central Banks. One-third held is in personal reserves. And one-third is held as jewelry or other fabricated products. The world per capita availability of mined gold is increasing. There are many forces shaping gold's future. Gold currently has a favorable exchange ratio. This is encouraging many new gold mining developments. Production is increasing and new recovery techniques are surfacing. The use of gold in the financial markets is increasing in some unique ways. And gold is again fulfilling its role as a universal money, making its future predictable. Gold Today Man is currently mining gold at the rate of about 1.4 kt/a (44 million oz per year). This adds about 1.5% of newly mined gold to the total supply each year. This production plays a small role in the pricing mechanisms since much of the 93.3 kt (3 billion oz) mined is available to the market in some form. The 2002 Arizona Conference was held Dec. 8 and 9, 2002, at the Doubletree Hotel at Reid Park in Tucson. The annual conference is organized by the Arizona Conference Board of Directors, which represents SME sections in Arizona and adjacent areas. The conference provides an opportunity for individuals and corporations associated with mining in the region to get together once each year to discuss the status of the industry. The meeting featured a keynote address, a distinguished lecture and about 30 technical papers. As was the case at the 2001 meeting, the economy, the price of copper and foreign competition continue to be the hot topics of discussion among the attendees. The domestic copper industry still faces challenges due to low copper prices dictated by the world market and because of a weakened domestic economy. There continues to be concern about the Arizona region’s copper industry in light of the mergers, downsizing and shutdowns that have occurred during the past several years.

Billiton Process Research has carried out extensive research over the past four years to develop new process technology using bioleaching for extraction of copper and nickel from their sulphide concentrates. Continuous pilot scale and laboratory batch testwork has been carried out with adapted mesophile bacterial cultures at40°C?45°C, moderate thermophile cultures at 50°C?55°C and thermophile cultures at 65°C?85°C. Pilot scale work has demonstrated the commercial viability of mesophile cultures for bioleaching of secondary copper sulphide and nickel sulphide concentrates. Moderate thermophiles offer benefits in terms of reduced cooling requirements for commercial reactors and, in the case of bioleaching of nickel concentrates, some selectivity over bioleaching of pyrite. Continuous pilot scale testwork has shown that thermophiles achieve efficient bioleaching of primary copper sulphide and nickel sulphide concentrates, giving much higher recoveries than achieved by bioleaching with a mesophile or moderate thermophile culture.

The coal-based power generation industry faces increased pressure from all sectors to improve its environmental performance. This is due to increased awareness of and concerns regarding greenhouse-and acid-gas emissions, toxic metal releases (to both air and water) and water availability. A methodology to assess this industry?s environmental performance is needed. Such a methodology should assess all environmental impacts accurately, recognizing the irspatial and temporal dependence, and taking into account the social acceptability of technologies employed. Here, we develop a methodology to determine the environ-mental impact associated with solid wastes generated by this industry, and apply this to the specific case of ash management. More specifically, the case study compares the environmental footprint of an ash deposit for a number of operational water management scenarios. The methodology considers leachate generation processes from ash impoundments to obtain a time-dependent concentration profile of mobile constituents at the interface between the ash impoundment and the surrounding environment. This leachate prediction modelling is subsequently linked to plume dispersion modelling tools to determine the fate and transport of leached components, predominantly salts, into groundwater. Together, these provide a measure of the extent to which a land mass is affected by leachate migration from the deposit. To determine the exact boundary between regions of acceptable and unacceptable risk to the environment, we use Ecological Risk Assessment concepts. In this way it is possible to obtain a time dependent affected land footprint which could be used as an indicator of the environmental impact of solid waste management practices. This information can be included in a set of environmental criteria which form the basis of an overall environ-mental impact assessment, using tools such as Life Cycle Assessment (LCA). The value of LCA is that its structure is consistent with accepted models of environmental decision making, where different approaches to valuation in impact assessment assist in prioritizing impacts on the basis of their perceived significance. The proposed ?affected land footprint? metric represents a significant improvement over current LCA impact indicators for solid waste management practices. Crucible-smelting tests at the Northwest. Electrodevelopment Laboratory and a pilot-plant test on electric smelting of western phosphate rock for the Westvaco Chlorine Products by the Tennessee Valley Authority indicated that the small vanadium content of the rock is concentrated in the ferrophosphorus by-product of Phosphorus smelting. This research is concerned' mainly with recovering vanadium and phosphorus froth the ferrophosphorus produced from western phosphate rock. Exploratory tests were made of several methods of treating vanadiferous ferrophosphorus. Attempts to separate vanadium as a carbide dross by saturating molten ferrophosphorus with carbon were unsuccessful. Volatilization of phosphorus from ferrophosphorus was accomplished to some extent, both with and without addition of sulfur in several forms, but elimination of phosphorus was not complete. Brief testing in a small experimental converter on oxidation of vanadium and phosphorus; into a slag by blowing with air showed promise. A method that comprised fusing vanadiferous ferrophosphorus mixed with soda ash under oxidizing conditions gave encouraging results and was tested beyond the preliminary stage. A slag product of the fusion contained most of the phosphorus and vanadium as water-soluble sodium phosphate and. virtually water-insoluble sodium vanadate. After leaching the sodium phosphate froth the slag, the leach residue was reroasted with soda ash and salt. This roasted product was leached again with water to extract the vanadium.

The acoustic signals emitted from a laboratory-scale ball mill were used for the estimation of the comminution of two complex sulphide ores, viz. Merensky and UG2 ores from the Bushveld Igneous Complex in South Africa. The digital acoustic signals were transformed to power spectral densities that could be related to particle size distributions (-75 µm to 4000 µm) in the mill by use of continuum regression. This approach is more general than principal component regression methods or Kalman filtering used previously and resulted in significantly more accurate calibration in the case of the Merensky ore, where approximately 93.4% of the variance in the particle size distributions could be explained. With fewer data available, the variance in the particle size distributions in the UG2ore could be explained less accurately (82.4%), but still satisfactorily. In addition, smaller particle sizes (less than 300 µm) could be modelled more accurately in the case of the UG2 ore.

Paper written on project work carried out in partial fulfilment of BSc (Eng) (Chemical) degree This paper details the formulation of a mathematical model for the simulation of a primary bioleach reactor, with specific reference to the leaching of pyrite. The model is based on the direct reaction mechanism, where the leaching of pyrite is said to occur via a two-step process. The process involves the formation of ferrous?iron through the chemical leaching of pyrite and subsequent bacterial oxidation of ferrous-iron back into ferric-iron. At steady state the rate of chemical leaching and bacterial oxidation are linked by the ratio of ferrous-iron to ferric-iron in solution. The extent of conversion of pyrite in the reactor system is described using the segregated flow model, with the exit age distribution of the solid phase being described by the Tanks-in-Series model. The final phase in model formulation involves the inclusion of steady state material balances on the bacteria and fluid phase components. The model is compared to pilot plant data and laboratory data for two different types of pyrite concentrates, with simulation results showing that the model is in good agreement with the data. Major mining projects are developed with the assistance of lending institutions who provide hundreds of millions of dollars in funding over several years, and of course expect those funds to be returned with interest. Two Australian banks have adopted the Equator Principles, an emerging financial industry benchmark for assessing and managing environmental and social risk in project financing. Project financiers have encountered environmental and social issues that are both complex and challenging, particularly with respect to projects in the emerging markets of Asia-Pacific and elsewhere. There are many recent and historical examples of failures by resource companies to effectively manage their environmental, social, safety and security risks, some of which have caused the project to fail completely, and some of which have caused the temporary cessation of production. These events put the financial institutions' funds at risk through inadequate management capacity and non-compliance adversely affecting the ability of the borrowers to repay the loans. They can also reflect adversely on the reputation of the lending institutions. In assessing these risks, lenders are increasingly looking at the track record of the borrower in its country of origin and in other countries where it operates. Lenders are wary of companies that have one standard for operations in a developed country, where the regulatory environment may tightly control what they do, and another standard for operations in countries where the regulatory regime is perhaps less stringent. Lenders may require environmental and social reviews or audits to be conducted on their behalf by competent third parties prior to a loan being approved, and annually over the life of the relationship. The mining industry's concept of the unwritten `social licence to operate' is highly relevant in relation to the delivery of community benefits that are sustainable post-mine closure. This paper provides examples of recent practices that support financial viability and sustainable development, as well as examples of some failures that have put lenders at risk.

The Smuggler is one of the mines in the Aspen district, located the central part of Pitkin County, Colo. It was first examined in July 1943 by C. R. Wilfloy, former mining engineer of the Bureau of Mines at Salt Lake City, Utah, in, company with the lessees, R. D. Rohlfing of Aspen and J. W. Vanderwilt of Denver. The purpose of this examination was to sample a mineralized breccia zone that appeared continuous along the contact between the Leadville and Weber formations. These preliminary samples showed that the zone contains low but significant amounts of lead and zinc and that the minerals are partly oxidized and thus not easily concentrated. The mine was examined again in May 1946 by the senior author and William Herron, one of the present lessees of the property. This examination reviewed the previous sampling and recommended investigations by the Bureau of Mines. Sampling and drilling investigations were conducted by the Bureau from October 1946 to February 1947 and again from August 1947 to April 1948. Aspen is the center of a famous mining district that produced over $102,000,000 in silver and lead ores from 1880 to 1918, when a dispute closed down the mines (fig. 1). All of the workings below the Cowenhoven tunnel in Smuggler Mountain and the lower Durant tunnel in Aspen Mountain have been flooded since that time. The Cowenhoven portal now is caved, and Smuggler Nos. 1 and 2 tunnels are the only accessible workings in Smuggler Mountain. The only operating mine is the Midnight, situated 4 miles south of town at an altitude of 9,700 feet.

Block model estimates are commonly calculated by the well-established technique of kriging. The mathematics are well established, but implementation details require site-specific considerations. Checking and measuring the performance of the estimates is important to ensure the block model is suitable for its intended purpose. There are different criteria for long-term planning and short-term planning. The implementation of kriging should be checked with cross-validation and assessed for conditional bias and departure from theoretical optimality with the calculation of kriging efficiency. A new expression of kriging efficiency, which compares the kriging variance with the theoretically optimal kriging variance, is developed to aid in this assessment. The assessment tools presented here can be applied in a number of situations; however, ordinary kriging with a reasonably large search performs well in most cases.

Electric Arc Furnaces keep evolving into highly powerful melting units, shrinking taptotap times by increasing the effectiveness of the energy sources and the material fluxes used in the process. Steelmakers are targeting to increase the efficiency of their injection package in order to reduce the overall conversion costs, seeking for technologies specifically designed to promote the metallurgical reactions in a predictable and reproducible process automatically controlled at the correct timing. Many technological enhancements have focused in the gas management, improving the burner design and the penetration capacity of oxygen injectors, dedicated to decarburization and the other exothermic reactions. Instead, lower evolution efforts have been addressed to engineered solutions for managing the addition of solid materials required in slag forming, although they are playing a key role in EAF process optimization, as well. The paper describes the latest solutions designed to manage efficiently the injection of fuel, oxygen and powdered materials in several EAFs and presents the operational results achieved. Accurate control of reliable additions of coal, lime and magnesia proved crucial for the control of the slag FeO and viscosity, generating stable foamy slag and producing cleaner steel.

Historically bauxite-based refractories have been used in applications where andalusite-based refractories could work. Bauxite-based refractories were chosen over andalusite-based refractories mainly because of the availability of low-cost Chinese bauxite and also because many furnaces were designed by international companies that cannot easily access high-quality products. Currently, the availability of low-cost bauxite is under threat as a result of high export duties and tariffs as well as restrictions on the amount of material that China allows to be exported. South Africa is a major producer of andalusite, and this guarantees stability with respect to both availability and price. Refractories based on andalusite have an added economic advantage over bauxite-based refractories in that unlike bauxite, which requires high-temperature calcination before use, andalusite is used in its raw state. This paper constitutes a literature study of the merits, both technical and economic, of using refractories based on andalusite compared to bauxite-based refractories. A lightweight compressed oxygen rescue breathing apparatus (RBA) for rescue and recovery missions has been developed by Mine Safety Appliances Company under contract to the Bureau of Mines. The apparatus is a positive pressure, closed circuit system of 4 hours duration. The weight of the complete apparatus, including an optional cooler, is slightly over 30 pounds. Weight reduction over currently available RBAs is achieved through the use of lithium hydroxide for scrubbing C02 in place of conventional chemicals and the use of a composite glass fiber/ aluminum shell cylinder for oxygen storage in place of steel cylinders. Positive pressure is maintained in the breathing circuit at all times by applying a constant spring force to the breathing bag. The harness has been designed to reduce the work of the wearer by redistributing the weight of the apparatus to the wearer's hips.

The design and field testing of a seismic miner detection and location system arc described. This work was carried out over a period of three years. The first two and one-half years were sponsored by Continental Oil Company, while the last period of tests were done as the first part of a one-year contract with the U.S. Bureau of Mines. Laboratory and field experimentation in three different nines under simulated emergency conditions have led to three important results: (1) Taps on roof bolts with normally available objects can usually be detected up to horizontal distances of 1,000 ft. (2) The origin of the tans can be located by on-site processing with a small computer. (3) Some predetermination of the approximate location is necessary for a quick and successful rescue. This report also includes preliminary specifications an,d cost guidelines for construction of a transportable field system capable of matching the performance characteristics of the one used during the field tests.

The traditional approach to improving the operating efficiency of a metallurgical plant has been to study individual unit operations and focus on improving the poor-performing unit operations. The complex nature of most metallurgical plants call for a holistic approach that will consider the whole rather than just focus on the individual units of a plant. This holistic approach is part of the systems thinking principles. Numerous case studies highlight the importance of the need to apply systems thinking principles in improving the effectiveness of metallurgical operations. Improving the efficiency of one unit operation without considering its effect on the performance of other unit operations has in many cases lead to lower overall operational efficiency. Modeling and simulation are key to the application of the systems thinking principles. Standard flowsheet models are very useful in scenario analyses though they have to be supplemented with other models for useful predictions.

Due to the steep geo-thermal gradient in Bowen Basin area, as underground coalmines reach increased depths of extraction, the Bulk Air Cooling (BAC) requirements will increase as opposed to cooling the workplace using the ventilation means alone. One such mine has already been using a 4 MW surface BAC plant for the last six years to manage the working temperatures with reduced cooling efficiency as the mine expands. Due to the horizontal nature of the longwall mine layout, distances from the working face to intake shafts are rapidly expanding to over 6 km as opposed to the vertical mine layout of a hard rock mine. To improve the positional cooling efficiency, reduced panel pressure differentials, improved rib emission gas management, and intake dust management, small diameter intake shafts were located on the inbye end of production panels and halfway up the development panels with localised mobile small BAC plants. In the majority of metal and nonmetal mining operations, narrow vein deposits are being mined with slusher hoists. Thin; method of mucking is costly, due in part to its inherent labor intense operation and to its inability to muck 100 pct of the deposits. Mechanized equipment would greatly improve the material handling in narrow vein mining and would dramatically reduce the operational cost. The Compact Loader/Trammer, known as the "mini-mucker" has been developed to increase productivity of the load/haul/dump portion of the typical narrow vein mining cycle. This is Volume II of the final report and concerns the operation and maintenance of the mini-mucker. Volume I covers a general and design review of the activities on the subject contract and are available under separate cover.

Coal that meets customer specifications is often stored in silos before being loaded into cars. It is often found that coal in a particular car does not meet customer specifications due to the mixing of coal inside the silo. Some new contracts require meeting specifications on a per car basis. Silo flow models are used to predict quality in such cases. However, coming up with an accurate silo flow model for each case is very difficult and time consuming. This paper examines the viability of using an online analyzer at the loading end of the silo in conjunction with a feedback circuit, to optimize the quality of the coal being loaded into trains, so that each car meets quality specifications.
