This paper presents an evaluation of tailings dam incidents from the 1994 USCOLD Tailings Dam Committee report. Comparisons are also made with water storage dam incidents from USCOLD reports and recent tailings dam incidents. The evaluation results show that tailings dam incidents are due to a number of factors including overtopping, static and seismic instability, seepage and internal erosion, and foundation conditions, and that no particular type of tailings dam or operational condition is more susceptible to incidents. In addition, the results confirm that tailings dams should be located, designed, operated, and reclaimed with a thorough knowledge of site conditions, mill operation, site monitoring, and tailings characteristics.

SUSTAINED growth characterized the U.S. economy in 1964. Many new peaks were achieved in production, sales, employment, employee earnings, and business profits. At the end of 1964, the economy had experienced 4 years of uninterrupted expansion, and the greatest net gains in output for all postwar cyclical advances had been registered. There were no indications of the various weaknesses which have previously characterized advanced stages of business expansion. Both gross national product (GNP) and national income were 6.7 percent higher than in 1963. In 1964 GNP totaled $628.7 billion, a gain of $39.2 billion over the 1963 figure. On an overall basis, prices rose 1.75 percent in 1964. The real volume of output of goods and services (GNP in constant dollars) increased by 5.0 percent ill 1964; this was more than the 3.8-percent gain in 1963 but less than the 6.6 percent gain in 1962. The 1964 output gain also exceeded the average 3.7 percent annual increase for the postwar period. Congress authorized a two-stage tax reduction designed to further stimulate economic growth and employment. The tax cut favorably affected the 1964 economy in the following ways: By helping to boost personal income, corporate profits, and industrial production; by accelerating the pace of consumer spending and business capital expansion; and by increasing employment, thereby reducing unemployment to 5 percent. Particle motion in fluids is a subject of considerable practical importance to engineers working in fields such as hydraulics, river mechanics, chemical engineering and mineral processing. Many mathematical models have been proposed to predict the terminal settling velocities of particles in a fluid medium. The selection of an appropriate mathematical model has, therefore, become a challenging task for practicing engineers. This paper reports on an attempt to identify some of the useful models found in the literature for predicting particle-settling velocities in a fluid under free- and hindered-settling conditions. From this study, it was concluded that there is no well-accepted model validated by experimental data available for predicting particle hindered-settling velocities in a suspension of polydisperse and polydens particles. Collective efforts should, therefore, be made towards developing a hindered-settling model, as this is an absolute prerequisite for many model structures in mineral processing and other engineering disciplines.

Potassium, lithium, strontium, barium, and manganese are present in many oilfield brines, None of them except barium is determined routinely in brine analyses. Therefore, sensitive and accurate flame-spectrophotometric methods were developed. Potassium, lithium, and strontium were determined by a standard-addition technique in ethyl alcohol solutions. Barium and manganese were determined in ethyl alcohol and normal propyl solutions, respectively, after interfering substances were removed.

Fletcher Challenge Limited through its subsidiary Grampian Mining Co Limited has carried out an ore evaluation of one of New Zealand's largest known deposits of ilmenite located at Barrytown on the West Coast of the South Island, New Zealand. The ilmenite is located in a beach sand environment which has previously been mined for gold. Two analytical techniques were developed to quantify the resource. Considerable difficulty was experienced in this phase of the evaluation due to the presence of major inclusions within the ilmenite grains. Wet and dry concentration circuits, utilising spiral, wet magnet, high tension and plate electrostatic separators have been designed to produce ilmenite from the ore. Studies to utilise the titanium content of the Barrytown ilmenite have been made. Recent work has been directed towards a titanium dioxide pigment process.

Cripple Creek and Victor Gold Mine is an epithermal gold deposit located in the Rocky Mountains of Colorado. Surface operations are continuing along with an expansion for an onsite mill to take place in the next couple of years. The surface pit is currently progressing downward from an oxidized zone into a transitional, more sulfide/ telluride-rich zone. Gold mineralization includes native gold, electrum, and tellurides. Cyanide heap leaching is the recovery process for the oxidized ore with the sulfide/telluride-rich ore to be processed at the new onsite mill. Ore characterization prior to mining is vital when there are two possible recovery processes. This characterization is dependent on geometallurgy. To identify the causes of the variability, multiple parameters are analyzed and assayed. These parameters are measured by a variety of analytical testwork. The analytical testwork provides measurements for the desired parameters. Geometallurgical models are developed for the parameters per recovery process, so estimations can be inserted into the resource model to optimize operations and recoveries.

Deposits of low-grade iron ores containing abundant goethite are distributed across the world. A common difficulty associated with beneficiating goethitic-rich ores is the poor liberation characteristics of the iron-bearing minerals which often contain finely disseminated gangue minerals such as kaolinite, gibbsite and quartz. Microwave-assisted heating has been proposed as an effective way of inducing dehydroxylation and associated mineral transformations in order to beneficiate low-grade goethitic ores. In this research, the mineral transformations occurring in a low-grade goethite-rich sample using microwave radiation was studied. Roasting conditions (up to 1000°C and under various CO/CO2 gas atmospheres) were designed to generate a magnetic product from a goethite-rich, reject waste stream sample sourced from an iron ore processing site in the Pilbara, Western Australia. Conditions (T, pO2) for transforming the raw material from hydrated goethite to hematite and eventually to magnetite are presented. Chemical and mineralogical characterisation of the raw material and roast products were conducted using X-ray fluorescence, X-ray diffraction, optical microscopy and scanning electron microscopy techniques to identify the mineralogical and chemical changes occurring during the heat treatment. Further steps are suggested to optimise the microwave-assisted magnetising roasting and correlate it with the application of magnetic separation techniques to maximise the efficiency of upgrading the iron content in low-grade iron ores.CITATION:Nunna, V, Hapugoda, S and Pownceby, M I, 2017. THE conductivity of copper wire is of prime importance to the electrical industry and consequently to the copper refiner and wire manufacturer. Annealed copper wire has a higher conductivity than hard-drawn wire, but, on the other hand, its tensile strength is lower. In an attempt to explain the reasons for these changes in property or at least to study the conditions existing in these two types of copper wire, the experiments described here were carried on in the Department of Metallurgy of the Michigan College of Mining and Technology. This is only a partial and preliminary report on some of the work done to date on a research program of which the object is an intensive study of copper. It is offered with the hope that, though it is not an exposition of the most rigorous of conclusions, the general trend of inferences which may be drawn will be of value and interest.

An evaluation was made of one of several improved underground communication systems sponsored by the U.S. Bureau of Mines. The system evaluated was installed in a typical metal/non-metal room and pillar mine and utilized UHF repeaters connected to a unique distributed antenna and passive reflector system which provided mine-wide communications. A microprocessor controlled data collection system was assembled and installed for the evaluation. Data consisting principally or times and durations of messages and identities of the originating transceivers was collected between February and August of 1982 (6 mos.). Analysis of the data shows that the principal benefits are reduction in time required for unscheduled maintenance and repair, enhancement of safety, and better coordination of production activities. A cost benefit analysis shows a net benefit over cost, although it is also concluded that the capacity of the system is greater than can be justified by current activity in the mine.

Selective leaching of phases in charge chrome is used in a variety of industrial processes for the production of chromium chemicals. A mineralogical study was made of a range of local charge chrome samples, at various stages of leaching in sulphuric acid (20g/l at 90°C), using mainly a scanning electron microscope (SEM) together with an energy-dispersive spectroscopy analyzer (EDS), and X-ray diffraction techniques. It was found that the leaching behaviour of the different types of charge chrome depends largely on the nature of the secondary phases, which in turn depends upon whether the silicon content is above or below 4 per cent by mass. The leaching behaviour of high-chromium ferrite is anomalous, and it is postulated that the process is analogous to the corrosion of brass by dezincification. In this study by the Federal Bureau of Mines Pennsylvania anthracite from the Eastern Middle field was oxidized by concentrated nitric acid at steam-bath temperature for 24 to 1,000 hours. The quantitative data obtained include yields of nitric-acid soluble and insoluble products and the distribution of carbon and ash in each. The acid-insoluble residues were examined for solubility in aqueous sodium hydroxide. With a sodium hydroxide concentration of at least 1 normal, a portion of the residue could be extracted in the form of a true solution. With lower alkali concentrations, peptization occurred. Alkali solubility of the residue increased with length of oxidation. However, when expressed in percentages of original coal weight, the alkali solubility remained essentially constant after 192 hours of oxidation. This suggests that the alkali-soluble products are converted to acid-soluble products at the same rate as the original coal substance is converted to alkali-soluble material. Microscopic observations of the peptization of the acid-insoluble residues revealed a gross micellar physical structure. The action of nitric acid is apparently not restricted to the surface of a coal particle. The acid penetrates the particle through the pore structure, dissolving some of the ash and altering the bonds between the coal micelles. The bond alteration, as indicated by ultimate analyses, involves the physical and chemical adsorption of the components of nitric acid. Some of the altered bonds are not thermally stable; this instability is shown by the complete loss of peptizing ability when the acid-insoluble products are heated above 200° C. This loss is accompanied by the evolution of water, oxides of nitrogen, and hydrocyanic acid.

The St. Peter Sandstone is typically a well-sorted, friable, ultra-pure, fine- to medium-grained, quartzose sandstone with silica content higher than 99 weight percent in places. The sand grains are well-rounded, highly spherical and characteristically frosted. Their size typically varies from 2 millimeters diameter (No. 10 U.S. Standard Sieve Series size) to less than 0.08 millimeters diameter (No. 200 U.S. Standard Sieve Series size). A freshly exposed surface of the formation is commonly white with shades of pink and green. Weathered surfaces are a dirty gray or brown and are case-hardened at many localities. Bedding is characteristically indistinct, and the formation usually appears massive throughout. The rock is cross-bedded and ripple-marked locally. The formation is generally porous, permeable and rarely fossiliferous in Missouri. The St. Peter is continuously present in the subsurface in the northern half of the state and along the southeastern edge of the state. The St. Peter crops out in a narrow band that starts in western Montgomery County and runs southeastward, along the Missouri River, to just west of St. Louis and continues south, just west of the Mississippi River, through Scott County. The outcrop belt varies from less than one mile wide to over ten miles wide, and it is over 150 miles in length. The formation dips into the subsurface radially away from the outcrop band. A notable isolated outcrop occurs in Lincoln County to the north of the main outcrop band. The St. Peter is discontinuously present in the subsurface along a band in the west-central portion of the state. It is not present at the surface or in subsurface in the remainder of the state. The formation averages 80?100 feet thick. There is an estimated 3.8 trillion short tons of St. Peter in Missouri. Sieve analyses on drill cuttings indicate three subsurface locations in northeastern Missouri where the St. Peter is greater than 10 percent by weight of sand falling in the 20?40 U.S. Standard Sieve Series size range. The St. Peter was first produced in Missouri in the 1870s for the manufacture of glass. Since that time it has been used as a paint additive, filler material, polishing compound, filtering media, and recently it is commonly used as a fracture proppant in oil and gas wells. The St. Peter is currently quarried and produced in Missouri from four sites located in St. Louis, Jefferson and Perry counties. In the same area there are at least nine abandoned historic mine sites.

The Storm deposit is a high grade breccia hosted “Carlin-type” gold deposit located at the north end of the Carlin Trend. Storm consists of 3 smaller deposits: 1) 49er Zone, 2) End Zone, 3) Discovery Zone. Structural intersections and favorable stratigraphy at the Paleozoic Popovich/Rodeo Creek formation and Bootstrap limestone formation contact are the primary known controls to gold mineralization at Storm. High grade silica-sulfide breccia occurs in the footwall of the north-south trending, dike filled, Dee fault. This mineralization cross-cuts silicified heterolithic breccia zones localized above the Bootstrap limestone where northwest, dike filled, reverse faults cut this structural-stratigraphic horizon. 40Ar/39Ar dates of 37.57+ 0.34 Ma (basalt dike) and 162 Ma (lamprophyre dike) have been obtained from dikes in the Dee pit which are locally mineralized by the same event as Storm. This paper will focus on the descriptive aspects of the Storm deposits.

This bulletin is issued by the Bureau of Mines as a contribution to the increase of safety and efficiency in the preparation and utilization of the mineral resources in the United States. Notable among the drains on these resources are the demands made by the nonferrousmetal industries, and in these the losses occasioned in melting brass and bronze are worthy of particular attention. This statement will be better appreciated by a consideration of the size of the brass industry. MAGNITUDE OF THE BRASS INDUSTRY. According to the Thirteenth Census, in 1909 there were in the United States 1,021 fu-ms that dealt mainly in brass and bronze. This total included jobbing foundries, manufacturing plants that both cast and machine a brass or bronze product, and rolling mills, but did not include iron foundries having nonferrous departments nor the numerous large brass-foundry departments of manufacturing plants that produce the castings used in the manufacture of electrical apparatus, cash registers, pumps, and the thousands of machines that require brass castings for their construction. Penton's Foundry List for 1910 gives about 1,150 exclusively nonferrous foundries and about 2,300 iron or steel foundries that also melt brass. If the rolling mills and. jobbing foundries in manufacturing plants be included, and if due credit be given to the rapid growth of the industry in the last few years, largely through the stimulation of the automobile busi¬ness, it is probable that not less than 3,600 plants are to-day melting brass or bronze.

The Bureau of Mines annually canvasses the peat producers in the United states and publishes economic data on the peat industry, based upon reports submitted by producers. This publication lists all producers that reported commercial production to the Bureau for 1960 and presents data on individual plants. The companies named herein represent virtually all commercial producers, although a few small companies may not have been canvassed as the industry has many small operations that operate intermittently. Output of the various companies listed ranged from a few tons to more than 50,000 tons. Peat is included in the Bureau's annual surveys of the mineral industries because peat is classified as a mineral fuel. Although none is used for fuel in the United States, peat is a potential source of energy and ranks as one of our large mineral resources. The domestic peat industry sells peat, chiefly, for use as a soil amendment for general soil-improvement purposes. During the past decade the industry has expanded rapidly with operations increasing from 45 in 1947-494/ to 115 in 1960. Output during this period has more than tripled, increasing from 131,782 short tons to 470,889 short tons.

The upper part of the "Contatto Ovest" orebody, at the San Giovanni Pb-Zn sulphur mine (Sardinia, Italy), is mined by a sublevel caving method. With increasing mining depth, a progressive caving of the hanging wall and discontinuous subsidence occurs. The orebody, which is located very close to the contact between the Cambrian limestones and the Silurian shales, strikes NE-SW for more than 100 m and dips 75-80' NW. The limestone footwall is massive and strong while the hanging-wall consists of very weak shales. The mine considered is located near a town so that the observed subsidence effects must be taken into account for both stability of the nearby railway and houses and morphological and environmental impact. A limiting equilibrium analysis to predict the progress of hanging wall failure with increasing mining depth was used. A suitable computer program was developed for solving the model by a iterative procedure. The progressive hanging wall caving and its consequent superficial effects were predicted perfectly by means of the computer program used and later confirmed by a geophysical test (seismic tomography). Our study ends with a further analysis, carried out using the same procedure, which allows to have a different geometrical situation with the presence of a pillar to protect the mill area.

The Coal Mine Health and Safety Act passed by Congress in 1969, called for research to alleviate the occupational stresses and hazards of coal miners. Spurred by a series of recent mine disasters the Congress directed the Bureau of Mines to increase its attention to the welfare of miners and to develop better working conditions and personal equipment for use in the mines. As one of the early steps in carrying out the provisions of the Act, the Bureau of Mines commissioned the Behavioral Sciences Group at the National Bureau of Standards to conduct a survey of the state of the art in ergonomics (human factors) as it has been applied to mining.

The Expert System implemented at the East-Malartic mill controls a copper flotation circuit while taking into account the profitability of the operation. Treating a copper gold ore, the flow sheet integrates a flotation step followed by cyanide leach circuit. The Expert System calculates the actual net smelter revenue of the flotation circuit, accounts for the operating cost of the cyanidation circuit and defines optimal metallurgical operating targets to optimize the overall economics. To be realistic, probability factors and circuit diagnostic analysis are integrated in the operating target selection. The Expert System has proved to be successful, robust and flexible. It resulted in a copper concentrate grade increase of 1% while maintaining recovery. The use of the expert system also gives plant personnel good training procedures and promotes interaction with mill operator.

Manganese deposits exist in the Wonder Mountain RARE II area (fig. 1). The manganese mineral is primarily bementite, a silicate. It occurs with Jasper and manganese oxides in tabular or irregular lenses along the contact between red limestone and basalt. There are about 11,000 tons (10,000 t) of indicated sub-economic resources in the northeast part of the study area. Of this, 10,700 tons containing 27.1 percent manganese is at the Apex Prospect and 300 tons averaging 24.8 percent is at the Brown Mule Mine (fig. 1). Another 1,000 tons (900 t) containing 27.0 percent manganese is at the Steel Creek deposit 0.5 mi (0.8 km) west of the area (Wiebelt, 1942, p. 1, 2). Each of these deposits is subeconomic due to small tonnage and high estimated recovery costs. They are in a regional belt of manganese occurrences trending northwesterly through the area. Pardee (1921) reports that manganese ore was shipped from the Triple Trip (Brown Mule) Mine in 1916.
