On the Kinetics and Equilibrium Models for Biosorption of Ni(II) onto a Gram-Positive Bacteria Strain, Rhodococcus opacus, for Environmental Applications The aim of this fundamental study was to evaluate the biosorption of Ni(II) from aqueous solution streams onto a Rhodococcus opacus strain through kinetics and equilibrium isotherms studies. The biosorption of nickel achieved its highest value in a pH around 5. The experimental data evaluation was carried out focusing three two-parameter models, as: Langmuir, Freundlich, Dubinin - Radushkevich. In order to determine the best isotherm fit, three error analysis methods were used to assess the data: correlation coefficient (R2), residual root mean square error (RMSE) and Chi-square test. The error analysis established that the Freundlich model fits better the nickel biosorption data. Maximum uptake capacity of nickel reached a value around 7.63 mg.g-1 for R. opacus. The biosorption rate was fast and achieved a removal of around 79 per cent of Ni(II) in the first 5 minutes at room temperature (25 ¦ 2¦C). The experimental kinetics data was evaluated considering two models (pseudo-second order and pseudo-first order). The error analysis established that the pseudo-second order model better fits the data.

If a conductor traversed by an electric current is broken, a conduction forms in the air between the two broken ends of the wire. This conduction manifests itself in an initial phase by an electric spark and, in a second phase, by an arc if the the circuit continues to supply sufficient power. This arc goes out when the distance between the two ends of the conductor becomes sufficiently large. If the break occurs in an explosive atmosphere, the energy contributed by the arc can cause an explosion. To avoid such accidents, electric circuits that may be utilized in hazardous atmospheres can be made "intrinsically safe". The investigation which we conducted is part of a research project on the intrinsic safety of arcs of high intensity but short duration, in the case of resistive circuits. We developed an electronic system which makes it possible to limit the duration of an arc at the level of the break of a conductor traversed by a current with a possible maximum intensity of 80 amperes. This experimental device for monitoring and measuring the parameters of the arc has shown that arcs of high intensity but with a duration limited to a few microseconds do not ignite an explosive methane-air mixture.

Slags and fluxes used in metallurgical processes are typically made up of oxides (especially silicates), with additions of fluoride and carbonaceous matter. Despite the efforts made towards understanding the role of slags in various processes, little information is available on the structure of these slags. Tools such as X-ray diffraction, spectroscopy, and electron microscopy could be used for this purpose. This paper is based on an ongoing spectroscopic and structural investigation of slags and related materials. Spectroscopic studies of various commercial slags (predominantly ferrous), ores, glass and related materials, covering a wide range of compositions, have been carried out to understand the structure. The infrared spectra were recorded, predominantly, using FTIR spectrometer (Bruker IFS 66U) spanning 4000 to 100 cm-1using the KBr pellet method. The resolution was typically 4 cm-1. The spectral outputs have been compiled in terms of bands present (corresponding to different bonds) and then compared with the typical bands expected for such bonds. Efforts are in progress to identify the trends with respect to the chemical composition?for example, the effects of SiO2, Al2O3, and non-bridging oxygens. Data obtained so far indicate some trends such as (i) a shift in the Si-O band (969 to 1099 cm-1) towards a higher wave number with increasing silica content (almost 2 to 92 weight percentage) and (ii) further strong shifts as a function of the alumina content. "Building and operating tunnels has been a highstakes endeavor in terms of costs, complexity, safety and impact on contractors, owners and the public for a long time. There are many variables that need to be closely monitored and managed to construct a tunnel on-time, on-budget and safely. Once built, there are also many elements that need to be monitored and managed to operate a tunnel safely and efficiently.Fundamentally, the risks to the safe and efficient construction and operation of a tunnel are a function of the degree of harm and the likelihood of the harm occurring. From a cyber security perspective, risk assessments used to inform decision makers and support risk responses are typically based on identification of relevant threats; internal and external vulnerabilities; the impact that may occur given the potential for threats to exploit vulnerabilities and the likelihood that harm will occur. This article focuses on creating awareness of vulnerabilities associated with technology used in tunnel construction and operation and some of the challenges associated with remediation of these vulnerabilities. As we all know, technology has been evolving at an accelerating pace and infiltrating every aspect of our lives in new and often exciting ways. In the world of tunneling, sensors and systems that provide position and time have become accurate, rugged and cost-effective enough to come out of the research labs and into the equipment and systems used every day. There are many opportunities to employ connected computing devices and sensors to costeffectively capture, integrate and analyze key data with minimal latency to manage risk better, improve safety and avoid surprises."

This paper will discuss one of the largest construction projects the City of Portland has undertaken. This phase of the Willamette River Combined Sewer Overflow (CSO)project consists of approximately 18,500 ft of tunnel in soft ground, requiring the construction of six deep shafts and jet grout ground improvement. The purpose of the project is to reduce volume of combined sewerage overflows from the drainage areas on the west side of the Willamette River. Bencor-Petrifond-Pacchiosi Joint Venture was awarded a contract to design and construct six deep circular shafts, jet grout ground improvement for three bridges and jet grout ground improvement break-in/outs for some shafts. Of the six shafts the Pumping Station Shaft was the deepest and largest, requiring a permanent ground support system with a deep jet grout ground water cut-off to 335-ft deep. The joint venture used state of the art methods and equipment to achieve its objectives and build the structures through some very difficult alluvial soils to great depths next to the Willamette River. The paper will provide a general discussion of the shaft construction and jet grout ground improvement installed for this phase of the project. It will also discuss some of the technical challenges encountered while effectively managing risk and costs, resulting in a successful project completed in a timely manner.

The modelling work presented here concerns Ni-bearing steels produced by Imphy Ugine Précision. In such grades, the contents of elements such as silicon or titanium must be precisely controlled by slag/metal treatments. The slag phase is described by IRSID slag model that has been slightly revised in order to better fit recent SiO2activity measurements in the low SiO2content domain of the CaO-Al2O3-CaO system. The Bureau of Mines found the chemical and galvanic corrosion behavior of the TZM and molybdenum-30 tungsten alloys to be generally equal or superior to that of unalloyed molybdenum in many aqueous solutions of acids, bases, and salts. Notable exceptions occurred in 1 [N] nitric acid, where both alloys corroded appreciably faster than molybdenum. In mercuric chloride solutions, the TZM alloy was susceptible to a type of crevice corrosion which was not due to differential aeration. The alloys were usually not adversely affected by con-tact with dissimilar metals in galvanic couple experiments, but the dissimilar metals sometimes corroded galvanically. Both alloys were resistant to substitute ocean water spray at 60° C.

An image analysis program can search for gold minerals in polished sections by scanning about 100 x 100 back-scattered electron images at a magnification of x400, allowing gold grains as small as 1 micrometre in diameter to be detected. Typically, a c.15 h overnight search of a product smaller than 45 micrometres will scan c.1 500 000 particles, providing data that are not easily obtained through manual operation of an optical microscope. The program locates grains of the correct brightness, acquires gold X-rays from them by wavelength-dispersive spectrometry, filters the data to remove artefacts and record the images and stage locations for subsequent retrieval. At the end of the run, the program allows the operator to verify and identify the grains found. Industrial studies at Canmet have included determining the nature of gold in cyanidation tailings, checking the mineralogy and size of gold grains in samples from an Indonesian Cu-Au concentrator and locating and measuring gold liberation and grain sizes in an ore

The International Symposium-cum-Workshop on Management andControl of High Gas Emissions and Outbursts in Underground CoalMines was held in Wollongong in March 1995. Coverage of high gasemissions was virtually confined to instantaneous outburst implications, essentially seam gas pre-drainage. Globally, instantaneous outbursts have been known for 150 years, andthe first Australian outburst occurred in 1895 and Australian occurrences and mines affected have increased since. Few significant coal producing countries are unaffected. The coals affected range in rank from lignites to anthracites. Geological disturbances are the most likely environments for occurrences. The most likely mining geometry is of virgin headings, with some occurrences on longwalls and in other situations. Widespread research into many aspects of the problem has yet to produce a generally accepted explanation. Explosive inducement is a well-known control. Apparently high advance rates increase face gassiness and create higher stress abutments, increasing proneness. The most popular preventive measure, pre-drainage of virgin coal ahead of faces has produced highly successful very long hole drilling performances but without the precision necessary for accurate geometric hole patterns, despite quite sophisticated drilling equipment and hole surveying instruments. For the future, more precise degasification is sought, even from the surface, together with rapid face coal gassiness assessments to confirm lowering below threshold values, as well as other proneness lowering measures, perhaps related to new heading and longwall geometries and to new equipment to provide them. But above all, safe management plans are required for each operation, to safeguard the miners and their working environments, and thus to protect underground coal mining from this mounting threatening problem.

This paper reviews groundwater issues leading to a secondary grouting program at the Chattahoochee Tunnel that was implemented subsequent to the contact grouting program. The secondary grouting program was developed based on infiltration data, geology, and testing programs. This paper includes a brief description of the geological features encountered, as well as describing the grouting program. The success of this grouting operation has been quantified by several methods, and is presented to help others project the costs and benefits of this type of program. Review of initial results and refinements of techniques are also discussed.

The Permian Red Bed copper deposits of the South Central States are a potentially important resource. Only the higher grade, near-surface ores are now exploited because conventional froth flotation does not recover oxidized copper minerals which comprise 10 to 15 percent or more of the copper content of typical ore. Laboratory-scale beneficiation studies were initiated to devise a method capable of recovering both sulfide and oxidized copper mineral. Testing established that the high clay and gypsum content of typical ore prevented effective flotation of the oxide mineral using sulfidizing, fatty-acid, or oil emulsion techniques. A modified leach-precipitation-flotation (L-P-F) procedure recovered over 90 percent of the copper, compared to a recovery of 77 percent obtained by conventional sulfide flotation. The higher costs of the L-P-F method would reduce the increased revenue from higher copper recovery. An increase in copper price and/or an increase in oxide copper content of the ore would make the L-P-F process comparatively more attractive.

A new hydrogen production process, named the HyPr-RING, has been proposed. Fundamental concept of the HyPr-RING is integration of water carbon reaction, water-gas shift reaction and CO2 absorbing reaction in a single reactor. Firstly, thermodynamic analysis was done to judge the possibility to realize the process. It was found that high pressure and temperature condition, such as 20 MPa and 1000 K, is required to promote this integrated reaction. Next, experimental verification of the new process was done under the high pressure and temperature reaction conditions. As the results, integration of above three reactions in a single reactor can be done successfully and produced a large amount of hydrogen as estimated by thermodynamic analysis. Experiments showed that organic materials including coal, heavy oil, biomass, plastics can be used in this process. In the gaseous phase, no pollutants such asH2S, SO2, COS are detected so that gas cleanup system is not required for power generation when this process is used. Finally, a process design was made to estimate process efficiency. Theoretically, 1 mole of carbon can generate 2 moles of hydrogen and cold gas efficiency of this process estimated as more than 80 per cent. This report is the third of a series on convergence of roof and floor in coal mines and subsidence of surface that accompanies it. The first paper5/ dealt with extraction in a mechanized mine (Montour 10) having relatively short rib lines that retreat rapidly. The second dealt with extraction in a mine (Crucible) in which coal was loaded. by hand and in which the rib lines wore long and slow-moving. The present report deals with a mine (Gibson) in which conditions approximated those in the Crucible mine, except that the distance between room centers was considerably less and the pillars were narrower in consequence. Moreover, the average cover was less and the studies were made under the steep hillside of a stream valley compared with a gently rolling surface over the portions of the second mine studied. Gibson mine lies in the east-central hart of Washington County, Pa. , approximately midway between the Montour 10 end Crucible mines on a north-south line. A cooperative agreement covering the work was made with the Hillman Coal & Coke Co. through W. L. Affelder, vice president. This paper describes the methods used in the investigation, gives excerpts from the data obtained, and offers such generalizations as appear to be justified.

Brightwater West (BT4) represents the state of the art in utility tunneling, namely a long relatively small diameter, soft ground tunnel, with no intermediate shafts, under significant groundwater pressures, requiring very precise survey control in order to hit a small exit window. The tunnel is over 6.4 km (4 miles) in length, is expected to encounter active earth pressures of over 5 bars in glacial geology, and a planned hole through into a shaft eye constructed at 45.7 meter (150 feet) below the water table. Despite the fact that all of these challenges have been previously overcome in larger diameter tunnels, the technical solutions are much more challenging in a smaller diameter due to the lack of space available for implementing the equipment and techniques required. In addition to the technical challenges, the project is faced with many of the constraints designed to minimize the impact of these types of projects on the neighboring community and environment. The work shaft for BT4 is within 15.2 m (50 feet) of Puget Sound and is on a site that was previously occupied by petroleum storage tanks, and all of the tunnel muck has to be removed from the site by barge as trucking is not allowed by contract. The paper addresses the work performed during the preparation for tunneling stage of this project both in assembling the TBM and in preparing the site for its arrival.

Radiation grafted structures my be fabricated to contain ion exchange groups selective to an ion complex. Proper choice of substrate and monomer will provide selective ion exchange with differing physico and chemical properties. Grafting a selected monomer to the proper polymer will provide selective ion exchange with assured chemical protection of the substrate. Ion exchange systems utilizing radiation grafted structures have been fabricated to ''capture'' gold, silver and palladium from dilute solutions. Other ion exchange systems can feasibly be produced to remove other precious metals. Rotating Cathode Technology is used to recover the metals from their regenerating solutions are pure metal foil.

Mining is taking place at increasing depths of cover on the Southern Coalfield beneath predominantly massive sandstone strata. Within the next twenty years, there will be longwall mining at depths greater than 600 m. As the Sydney Metropolitan area continues to expand and as coal mining approaches these urban areas subsidence will continue to become an increasinglY important aspect of coal mining research. Investigations, commenced in the mid 1960's, allow prediction of subsidence in the Southern Coalheld with reasonable confidence. The work is showing that the characteristics of thc subsidence troughs over the deeper mining at Appin differ from the characteristics of mine subsidence at less cover.The longwall mining at Appin Colliery has resulted in a maximum measured subsidenee of 730 mm. The maximum strains were small because of the large radii of curvature of the subsidence profiles. There was no damage to any of the buildings in the township of Appin.

This paper summarizes explosives transportation incident and accident data collected by the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) from 1993 to 1998. The paper briefly describes the legislation and regulations that cover hazardous materials transportation. The multimodal incident data collected by the Research and Special Programs Administration (RSPA) contained 86 incidents involving Class 1 materials during transit. Thirty-two occurred on public highways. The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) data showed there were 8 1 motor-vehicle accidents involving explosives. The FHWA Crash datafile extract contained 649 records categorized as involving Class 1 materials although closer analysis revealed that nearly 90% of these did not involve explosives. In both databases, there were no fatalities caused by the explosive materials although 7 fatalities were the result of injuries suffered during the motorvehicle accident. There were also no serious explosions during any of these incidents or accidents. The paper concludes with an analysis of the risk involved with transportation of commercial Class 1 materials on the highway.
