Published X-ray mass absorption coefficients were compiled and tabulated. These coefficients are required for various X-ray analytical techniques. Values obtained from 28 authors are listed for 87 elements with both experimental and calculated points included; the wavelengths range from 4.01 to 68 A. Representative graphs are presented for six elements (lithium, nitrogen, iron, silver, holmium, and uranium. A 37-item supplementary bibliography is also included.

High speed diamond cutting has extensive applications in civil and mining engineering. A project involving the diamond sawing of black granite is investigating the nature of the diamond cutting process. A sawing machine was devised to adjust the cutting load and measure cutting speed. Cuttings were collected for size distribution analysis. The surface produced by interaction between diamond. grits and the rock was subjected to microscopic investigation. Increasing load prompts the proportional increase in the cutting rate. But the mean size of cuttings shows little change. The photomicrographs of the cutting tracks indicate neither patterns of crack formation nor signs of the ductile behaviour of the rock. A diamond cutting model for hard rock is formulated on these observations. Diamond cutting is a process of surface failure, which advances in four stages. The polycrystalline characteristics of a hard rock and the action of high-speed diamond grits guarantee the creation of crack nuclei which develop into cracks in various directions. This network crisscrossing cracks enable the stripping of this surface layer from the rock.

"Potash processing in Canada commenced on a commercial scale in 1962. Over the last 25 years it has grown into a world-class industry with many advances in processing technology. As it is a relatively young industry, many more advances can be expected. Unlike much of the mineral production in Canada, potash is sold as a range of finished products. The processing involves potash recovery and finishing in about equal amounts in terms of the effort of processing. Environmental concerns are not insignificant and are being treated uniquely in some areas. Research and development efforts, while not carried out on a large scale, are attacking industry problems on a wide front.THE INDUSTRYThe Canadian potash industry has 12 producing mines, 10 in Saskatchewan and 2 in New Brunswick. The total productive capacity of the industry is 18,300,000 tonnes of products per year. At capacity, the industry 1•ill process the equivalent of about 53,000,000 tonnes of ore per year. Plants range in size from 8,000 tonnes to 24,000 tonnes of feed per operating day. In product terms this is from 2,500 to 3,500 tonnes of products per day.Of the 12 mines, 11 are conventional underground mining operations with potash recovery principally by flotation supplemented by crystallization and one is a solution mine where mining is achieved by dissolving the potash and salt in underground caverns and then treating the solution in an evaporator/ crystallizer circuit. In all plants there is commonality of unit operation in the product screening and compaction sections. There are three principal ores being treated in the conventional plants. A damaged outlet pipe beneath Lenihan Dam has restricted reservoir discharges, severely constraining the owner?s groundwater recharge program. The solution, a new outlet pipeline through the dam?s right abutment, includes an approximately12.2-m-deep (40-ft-deep) shaft and 618.7-m-long, 4.3-m-diameter (2,030-ft long, 14-ft-diameter) tunnel mined in Franciscan melange composed of hard blocks of rock and soft clayey matrix. Alternating road header with drill and blast operations and using steel ribs and shotcrete have proven a flexible combination for handling the variable ground conditions. Excavating the shaft and connecting it to the tunnel require lowering the reservoir for five months, during which time careful construction sequencing and use of a tunnel plug eliminate the risk of an uncontrolled discharge.

The numerous direct processes which have been patented and brought before the iron-masters of the world, differ materially from that now introduced by Mr. Wilson. After a careful examination of his process, I am convinced that Mr. Wilson has succeeded in producing good blooms from iron-ore, and I think that I am able to point out theoretically the chief reasons of the success of his method. Without going deeply into the history of the metal, I may mention the well-known fact, that wrought-iron was extensively used in almost all quarters of the globe, before pig or cast-iron was ever produced. Without entering into the details of the processes by which this wrought-iron was made, it suffices for my present purpose to say that they were crude, wasteful, and expensive, so that they can IE employed to-day only in a very few localities favored with good and cheap ore, fuel, and labor. The constructiou of larger furnaces and the employment of higher temperatures led to the production of a highly carbonized, fusible metal, without any special design on the part of the manufacturers in producing it. This pig-iron, however, could be used only for a few purposes for which metallie iron was needed; but it was produced cheaply and with little loss of metal, and the attempt to decarbonize this product and bring it into a state in which it could be hammered and welded was soon successfully made. This process of decarbonizatioa, or some modification of it, has successfully held the field against all, so-called, direct processes up to the present time. Why ? Because the old-fashioned bloomeries and Catalan forges could produce blooms only at a high cost, and because the new processes introduced failed to turn out good blooms. Those produced were invariably "red-short," that is, they contained unreduced oxide of iron, which prevented the contact of the metallic particles, and rendered the welding together of these particles to form a solid bloom impossible. The process of puddling cast-iron, and transforming it by decarhonization into wrought-iron has, as everybody knows, been in successful practical operation for many years, and the direct process referred to so closely resembles this, that a short description of the theory of puddling is not out of place here.

THIS REPORT gives results of an investi¬gation of the carbonizing properties of coals from Pittsburgh bed, Jamison No. 9 mine, Marion County, W. Va., and from Upper Freeport bed, Bull Run No. 1 mine, Preston County, W. Va. The study included Bureau of Mines-American Gas Association tests at 800° and 900° C. and various chemical and physical tests designed to evaluate the plastic, expanding, and agglutinating properties of coal. A blend of each coal was carbonized in the 500-pound slot oven. The carbonization sample of Pittsburgh coal contained 2.7 percent moisture, 35.8 percent volatile matter, 54.4 percent fixed carbon, 7.1 percent ash, and 0.9 percent sulfur. It contained 60.9 percent fixed carbon on the dry, mineral-matter-free basis and had a heating value of 14,780 B. t. u. per pound on the moist, mineral-matter-free basis. It therefore ranks as high-volatile A bituminous and was blended with low-volatile Pocahontas No. 3 coal. Upper Freeport coal contained 2.8 percent moisture, 27.7 percent volatile matter, 60.9 percent fixed carbon, 8.6 percent ash, and 1.0 percent sulfur, as carbonized. It contained 69.5 percent fixed carbon on the dry, mineral-matter-free basis and therefore ranks as medium-volatile bituminous. It was blended with high-volatile A Pittsburgh coal from Allegheny County Pa.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines and the U.S. Geological Survey are responsible for the evaluation of the mineral resources and potential of further planning areas included in the U.S. Forest Service Roadless Area Review and Evaluation (RARE II) program. The Bureau of Mines primarily evaluates mineral deposits and prospects within the areas. The Geological Survey naps the area's geology and conducts geochemical sampling. Evaluations are in conformance with the Forest and Rangeland Renewable Resources Planning Act of 1974 as amended by the National Forest Management Act of 1976. The Hauser RARE II area, which consists of 7,600 acres (3,100 ha) within the Cleveland National Forest, is in southern San Diego County, California. The area, which forms the north slope of Hauser Canyon, ranges between 1,600 and 3,919 ft (490 m) in elevation. It is sparsely to densely covered with desert shrubs. The area is underlain by granitic rocks of the Peninsular Ranges batholith.

Na-feldspar (albite) and K-feldspar (microcline or orthoclase) are major feldspar minerals with identical crystal structures and physicochemical properties. Flotation appears to be a unique method of separating these minerals. Fundamental studies on amine/feldspar system in the presence of monovalent salts showed that separation of these feldspar minerals by flotation is possible at certain concentration of monovalent salts in HF medium and natural pH. A comparison between natural pH and HF medium indicates that the latter provides a better selectivity at the expense of higher collector requirement. A general mechanism for both systems involving an ion exchange between the uncommon ions and adsorption of the common ions is proposed to be responsible for creating differences in the charge of albite and microcline unto which amine adsorbs.

While tunneling in Europe has been a tradition for centuries, many companies and countries have embraced tunnel innovation with considerable vigor and creativity. Indeed, local needs and site conditions have provided the initiative for improved means, methods, materials and equipment to complete progressively more challenging projects. Many recently completed tunnels have expanded tunneling technology and contributed to the development of highly specialized and productive equipment ? such as the mixed-mode tunnel boring ma-chine (TBM) presently in operation at the SOCATOP A- [ ] 86 road tunnel and the high-pressure slurry TBMs for the Westerschelde Tunnel in the Netherlands and Hollandsas near Malmo, Sweden. This paper describes some of the key technologies employed by European tunnel builders and designers including the New Austrian Tunneling Method (NATM), advanced earth pressure-balanced (EPB) machines, pres-sure-faced (slurry) tunneling machines as well as ?hybrid? or mixed-mode TBMs. While these tunneling methods and equipment generally involve significant equipment investment, they may also involve highly trained, experienced and specialized tunneling and support crews as well as materials and tools specifically developed to supplement or complement tunneling performance. For example, mechanized pipe arch placement substantially improves ground support measures and NATM advance and on larger tunnel cross-sections.

It is well documented that a significant amount of the new PGM (Platinum Group Minerals) production that is coming on stream now, and over the next few years, is to come from the UG-2 reef. Clearly the reservations, or perhaps the perceived reservations, attached to the processing of this ore are no longer there. What were the metallurgical issues that delayed the exploitation of the PGM values from this reef? Traditional furnaces treating Merensky concentrates were not able to accept the concentrate produced from a UG-2 plant due to the relatively high chromite content of this product. The chromite reports to an insoluble spinel phase that accretes in the furnace, resulting in the necessity to shutdown and dig the furnace out periodically. This was clearly not an attractive economic option, so producers stayed away from it in the early days. The Merensky ore had all higher base metal credits anyway, and you needed them to get a matte fall, so there was no driving force to look seriously at the UG-2 reef. Platinum demand at this time could be easily met from the Merensky ore, so the motivation to tackle more complex ores was not there. The low price of PGMs meant that these operations were not particularly profitable and there was little effort directed at improving the operations. Concentrators were generally not run very efficiently and the emphasis was on cost reduction through increasing milling rates.

Despite more than half a century of experience with roof bolting, no design method has received wide acceptance. To begin to improve this situation, National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) conducted a statistical study of roof bolt performance at a number of mines throughout the U.S. Case histories were collected from 37 mines with a variety of roof bolt types and patterns in a wide range of geologic environments. Performance was measured in terms of the number of roof falls that occurred per10,000 ft of drivage. The study found that roof falls are rare when the roof is strong and the stress is low, even with light roof bolting patterns. The focus of this paper is on the more difficult conditions, where the roof is weaker and/or the stress is higher. Analysis of the results led to guidelines that can be used to make preliminary estimates of the required bolt length, capacity, and pattern. The guidelines are based on the depth of cover (which correlates with stress) and the roof quality (measured by the Coal Mine Roof Rating (CMRR), and the intersection span. Another contribution is a formula for estimating the horizontal stress level in the eastern U.S. coalfields as a function of the depth of cover. The design guidelines are currently being implemented into a computer program called Analysis of Roof Bolt Systems (ARBS).

Lower Miocene Maryville Coal Measures at Waitewhena Coalfield, in the Taranaki coal region, include seams of sub-bituminous coal up to 4 m thick. During coalfield exploration Fletcher Challenge Ltd drilled ten cored holes, all of which encountered at least one seam. Coal quality is variable. Ash ranges from six to 12 per cent and sulphur from 0.5 to three per cent. A basal seam, overlying the Lower Mokau Sandstone, appears to extend throughout the area under investigation. A rider seam, of variable thickness, closely overlies the main seam in most drillholes. The rider converges with the main seam to the north and vertical trends in coal properties suggest that the seams are united in some locations. A less extensive seam sometimes occurs at the top of the coal measures beneath the Upper Mokau Sandstone. The lithostratigraphy of the intervening coal measures is complex, and coexistence of fluviodeltaic, lagoonal/lacustrine, and marine depositional environments is provisionally inferred. Lateral variations in coal properties (clastic derived ash, volatile matter, inertinite, hydrogen), thickness of the sedimentary parting between the basal seam and rider, texture of the coal measure sediments, and distribution of the upper seam all indicate persistence of a relatively low lying northeast-trending zone which may have been structurally controlled. Available data indicate that coal measure accumulation was terminated by marine transgression from north to south.

The oxidation state dependence of the electrical conductivity of a calcium ferrite slag with 25 wt% CaO was measured at 1300°C using a shallow slag layer and two-electrode technique. The experiments were started in air and the slag was sequentially reduced by means of a controlled gas atmosphere using CO2and CO. The electrical conductivity in air was approximately 300 S/m and increased with reduction to approximately 1900 S/m at a pO2of 10-10atm. The interest in the oxidation state dependence of the conductivity of calcium ferrite slags was to provide a comparison with the conductivity of iron silicate slags and to establish the effect of slag basicity on the electrical conductivity and its oxidation state dependence. The results obtained are discussed in terms of the slag structural information available in the literature. The co-ordination of the ferric ions appears to play a large role in determining the electrical conductivity. Keywords: calcium ferrite, slags, electrical conductivity.

Anisotropic behaviours of OhshimaOshima granite were investigated by carrying out uniaxial compression tests, together with observations of microcracks under an optical microscope. The elastic modulus tensor of Oshima granite at 10 per cent strength,E10, were calculated using theoretically formulation of elastic modulus tensor in terms of the second-rank crack tensor for pre-existing open microcracks. Furthermore, with the assumption of orthorhombic elasticity, the nine moduli of Oshima granite E10were determined by uniaxial compression test. Twenty-onemoduli of samples, calculated without assuming any symmetry, also showed orthorhombic features. Direction of the symmetry axes agreed well with the orientation of preexisting cracks. Comparison of crack tensor-based formulation results with the experimentally determined one show that the anisotropy of elasticity of Oshima granite is caused by pre-existing open microcracks, not by pre-existing healed microcracks and also crack tensor formulation can be used, as a first-order approximation at least, to describe the anisotropy of Oshima granite induced by pre-existing open microcracks. ZUSAMMENFASSUNG: Das anisotrope Verhalten des Oshima-Granits wurde mit Hilfe voneinachsigen Kompressionstests und durch die Betrachtung von Mikrorissen unter einem optischenLichtmikroskop untersucht. Introduction Coal has always been China's predominant energy resource. The country ranks among the three richest countries in coal reserves in the world, next to the US and the Soviet Union. According to China's Ministry of Coal Industry (MCI), coal accounted for about 72% of the total national energy consumption. Despite efforts to increase the output of oil and hydropower, coal is predicted to remain dominant on the energy scene by increasing its share to 77% by the turn of the century. To match the rapid growth in the agricultural and industrial sectors, MCI has targeted the coal industry to double coal output from 600 Mt/a (660 million stpy) in 1981 to 1.2 Gt/a (1.3 billion stpy) by the year 2000. How is this goal to be achieved? According to MCI, it will be accomplished by: • building new underground and surface mines with a total output of 400 Mt/a (440 million stpy); • increasing the output of existing state-controlled mines from the present 344 Mt/a (368 million stpy) to 400 Mt/a (440 million stpy); and • developing and increasing the output of small, local mines run by province, county, and production brigade from the present 276 Mt/a (304 million stpy) to 400 Mt/a (440 million stpy). Building new underground and surface mines New underground coal mines will be developed in areas where the coal industry has already made headway and infrastructures currently exist. This is to optimize hardpressed capital spending on investment. Ten existing coal production bases were selected in nine different provinces that met these requirements. The underground mines scheduled to be constructed in stages at he existing coal production bases will have a total output of 200 Mt/a (220 million stpy) by the end of the century. Regarding surface mines, four mines in the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region and one in Shanxi province have been earmarked for construction during the same period. By the year 2000, these surface mines are expected to produce 200 Mt/a (220 million stpy). Foreign equipment, machinery, and surface mine stripping technology were all involved in different degrees in the development of the five new surface mines. Some have signed joint venture agreements. Occidental Petroleum Corp. is in a joint venture with China in developing Ping-shou's 15 Mt/a (16.5 million stpy) Antaibao No. 1 open-pit. The Shentou power station, situated nearby, is anticipated to consume 3.2 Mt/a (3.5 million stpy) of the coal it produces. Some is designated for export. Increasing output There are 554 state-controlled mines that have been in operation since before 1980. They produce 344 Mt/a (379 million stpy). To increase capacity, MCI has laid out some guidelines. • Coal prospecting near existing mines must be given top priority and intensified so that workable reserves can be increased. This would lengthen the mines' useful life. • Many mines and slopes that were constructed during the 1950s are very small and densely populated. German manufacturer DBT signed a contract to supply a sixth automated-plow long-wall system to Shenyang Coal in Liaoning province in northeastern China. This most recent order occurred just weeks after DBT signed a contract to deliver a fifth automated-plow longwall system to Datong Coal in Shanxi province. The plow will go into service at Shenyang Coal’s Hongyang Mine. Mining conditions at the mine, coupled with DBT’s advanced automated-plow technology, means that the system has the potential to become one of the world’s most productive thin-seam longwalls.

The effects of soil displacement caused by pile driving on adjacent piles and structures are discussed. A method is proposed to estimate the point of force equilibrium which makes it possible to calculate up-lift forces and pile head movements. For the case of pre-coring a method is proposed to estimate the stability of the bore hole, based on cavity expansion theory. Model tests were performed to establish the displacement pattern of the soil during the driving of a pile group. It can be concluded that at the ground surface, already installed piles have little influence on the lateral displacements, but reduce significantly the soil heave. During the driving of a pile group, the soil is displaced according to a complicated pattern, which is strongly influenced by the order in which the piles are driven. In clay the displaced soil volume corresponds to the total volume of driven piles.

"Gold is present in different forms and associations in different ores. Flotation is used to recover gold and minerals associated with gold, but the applicability and type of flotation vary. The purpose of flotation in a gold recovery plant is largely dependent on the mineralogical association of the gold, and environmental and economic considerations. In this paper, the role of flotation in the recovery of gold is reviewed. The paper will describe examples of gold recovery by flotation including flotation of native gold, gold associated with sulphides including specifically copper sulphides, gold associated with tellurides, gold ores containing carbonaceous material and gold contained in tailings.INTRODUCTIONFlotation is widely used in the recovery of gold. However, the objectives and the mode of application are quite variable dependent on the type of ore, the gold association(s), other metal values, marketing considerations and environmental requirements. In this paper, a range of different applications of flotation incorporated in the recovery of gold are discussed. The reasons for each particular application are outlined and metallurgical results are presented.The mineralogy of the ore and the gold associations are fundamental influences on gold recovery. The use of flotation to concentrate gold is dictated by the mineralogy of the ore and gold. The fundamental factors are mineral/gold size, liberation size, association of the gold and type of gangue minerals or other valuable minerals. Gold can exhibit a range of sizes in a host from relatively large size (+50 µ) to refractory size (1 µ and sub-micron size). Similarly, the gold can occur in a number of phases in the same host. For example, the gold was present as petzite (AgAu telluride), calaverite (AuTe2) and native gold in a gold telluride ore and each of these minerals was associated with the pyrite host.Understanding the gold mineralogy and association is important in establishing the correct process route. The gold mineralogy is established by good mineralogy, use of diagnostic tools such as diagnostic leaching and assay by size fraction analyses and basic metallurgical testwork."
