A leaching model for gold ore that takes into account the impact of cyanide and oxygen concentrations as well as gold surface exposure on leaching performance is developed. Cyanide consumption is estimated by an empirical model that is a function of ore particles size distribution as well as cyanide, copper and sulphur concentrations. The proposed model has been validated by data from laboratory leaching tests on the Sleeping Giant gold mine ore. Keywords: gold leaching, modelling, exposure surface.

After years of cutbacks, closures and layoffs, the mining industry is beginning to expand again. Metals prices are up and so is investor interest and confidence in the industry. Gold prices began to slowly move up in January2003 and finally cracked the $12.86/g ($400/oz) mark in early December. Silver, too, is up, as is copper. So the mining industry is feeling good about itself again and many companies are expanding existing mines and developing new ones. One side benefit to mining’s improved outlook is that companies are beginning to send more of their employees to industry conferences. Such was the case at the109th Northwest Mining Association meeting in Spokane, WA. The meeting was held in early December and attracted 1,100 attendees and 84 exhibiting companies. That is up from 2002’s attendance of about 900 people and 65 exhibitors. The theme was “A Partnership into the Future.”

DURING the past two decades considerable progress has been made in the art of manufacturing heater alloys. The conventional iron-chromium-nickel alloys have been improved by the addition of small quantities of other elements. Up to the present time, to our knowledge, there has not appeared a systematic study of these alloys where the newer tools of investigation have been brought to bear on the problem. It is not yet clear what roles the additional elements play in increasing life time in usage. As a first approximation one might guess that elements such as manganese, silicon, zirconium, calcium and aluminum would aid in the formation of a protective film on the alloy surface, thus retarding the oxidation rate and increasing lifetime. If these additional elements do form protective oxides in the outer surface of the oxide film, it may be possible to identify them by means of reflection electron diffraction. It is also possible that the additional elements may not diffuse to the surface but may remain at the interface between the oxide and the metal. Then, too, the major elements in the alloys undoubtedly form oxides which are stratified on the surface. If the minor elements concentrate in a layer in contact with the substrate where they undergo oxidation and if this oxide film offers resistance to the diffusion of iron, chromium and nickel ions, then the lifetime of the heater element might be expected to increase. It is also possible that preferential reduction in the diffusion rates of the several ions may Occur to such a degree that oxides may form in the body Of the film and On the outer surface which are different from those that would normally form if the additional elements were not present. The use Of transmisson electron diffraction may aid us in jnterpreting these phenomena. UP to the Present time all Of the factors which influence the lifetime of a given heater element are not definitely known. Among these are: (I) The rate of oxidation of the alloy. This may be dependent upon the composition and the physica1 state of the "alloy. (2) The stability of the structure of the coating which forms. Transitions from one structure to another or solid phase reactions resulting in a change of composition may occur. The tendency of the film to adhere to the substrate when heated and cooled successively will be important. (3) The evaporation of various constituents from the alloy such as the remova1 of carbon by Oxygen in a decar-burization reaction. The Bureau of Mines investigated gaseous direct reduction of low-grade iron ore concentrates in a continuous fluid-bed reactor. These studies were made in a 4-inch diameter fluid-bed reactor using hydrogen alone, and oxygen-or air-reformed natural gas as the reductants. The percent reduction is directly dependent on the mole ratio of hydrogen in the reducing gas to the oxygen associated with the iron oxide in the ore. Two-and three-stage fluid bed tests were simulated by repeated continuous tests. The results showed that percent reduction of the final product was dependent on the mole ratio of the quantity of hydrogen in the gas of each stage to oxygen in the iron oxide of the initial ore feed. Reduction as high as 87 percent in the single stages and as high as 94 percent in the multistages was obtained when either hydrogen or reformed natural gas was used as the reducing gas. Magnetic separation and concentration of the highly reduced fluid-bed product yielded a high metallic iron concentrate analyzing 85 percent total iron and 80 percent metallic iron with total iron recovery as great as 90 percent. Agglomeration of the high-grade metallized concentrate produced hard pellets analyzing 85 percent total iron and 78 percent metallic iron. Green pellets, with good strength, were made without any binder in a drum pelletizer. Direct melting of the high-metallic fluid-bed product in a basic lined arc furnace produced a nearly pure iron which contained 0.09 C and 0.01 P with 95 percent recovery of the metallic iron in the metal.

The objective of this study was two-fold: 1. To perform a world literature search pertinent to the analysis, selection and design of hoisting systems and their components and to codify the search into a literature compendium. The search resulted in a technical data file of over 1500 hard copy items. The compendium index was also suitable for establishing a comprehensive computer-loaded data base on the subject. 2. To develop a comprehensive system of guidelines to cover salient aspects of analysis, selection and design of electrical, mechanical and structural components of a hoisting system with a view to establish parameters for maximum safety and efficiency of operation, installation and revision of the system. 3. Major mechanical components in the hoist and mechanical drive train are considered. Design and specification criteria based on American standards and practices are developed as they apply to typical mine hoist arrangements.

A new type of personal sampler for quantitative estimation of atmospheric concentrations of contaminant gases was first reported from this laboratory in 1972. The sampler requires no pumps or flow regulators and employs instead the motion of the gas molecules them-selves to furnish the power for sampling. Under this grant, work was completed on development of a kit for the field determination of both NO2 and NO. Detailed instructions for the preparation of the samplers and the use of the kit was supplied to the Technical Project Officer. Attempts were made to adapt the same type of sampler to the measurement of SO2 and CO. Both gas chromatographic and turbidimetric procedures for the final estimation of the S02 proved to be unsatisfactory. For CO no reagent was found which would react sufficiently rapidly with this gas to utilize the essential feature of the diffusion sampler, the maintenance of a diffusion gradient which is at least approximately numerically equal to the ambient concentration. A number of publications on use of the NO2 sampler, both at occupational and community air pollution levels, have resulted from this work.

By oxidizing the pyrite matrix through biological leaching of precious metals ores or concentrates, better than 90% recovery of gold and silver is achieved. The paper develops three precipitation processes that eliminates arsenic and all other toxic elements in the resulting liquor after the biological reactors. In addition, the precipitates are highly crystalline and resist resolubilization. The latter must be tested for at least six months by EPA test procedures. The three systems are temperature (must be at least 120°C or higher) lime or limestone. A continuous pilot plant was employed for all three systems and complete recommendations are given to optimize Fe/As molar ratio, reaction kinetics (detention time) pH, temperature, wt % feed solids as well as resultant reagent consumption based upon continuous operation.

As the level of technology applied in the electrical measurement, control, and display portions of mine hoist systems continues to advance, the issues and concerns associated with the ramifications of the application of microprocessor technology on the safety-related aspects of these systems become paramount. This report, in part tutorial, addresses several aspects of these concerns. Beginning with discussions of microprocessor-based system architectures, the report addresses some existing and anticipated uses of this technology in mine hoist systems and discusses safety related considerations associated with the areas of data derivation; control and display panels; and system reliability issues. The report concludes with electrical maintenance and inspection considerations associated with the safety assurance of microprocessor based mine hoist systems.

The sinking and lining of a large mine shaft with 8.0 m i.d. and 1,133 m total depth is described in detail. The ground freezing method was applied to safely sink the shaft through unstable, waterbearing strata. Following a brief introduction to the geological and hydrological conditions and the owner's shaft requirements, is the general technical concept to sink and line the shaft. Particular emphasis is put on the lining system which has to provide stability and absolute watertightness for the lifetime of the shaft, even though mining takes place in its immediate proximity. Machinery and equipment used to execute the work are mentioned and commented. Furthermore, the excavation and lining of the large filling stations using rock anchors and shotcrete are described. Details on performance rates are given.

THE work performed by the Royal Commission on Mining Subsidence is likely to prove of permanent value, less perhaps for the conclusions it has reached and for the recommendations it has based upon these than for the admirable exposition which it affords of the law concerning mining subsidence and of the legal status of the person who has suffered damage by reason of such subsidence, as also of him whose working has caused the damage. The Commission was appointed by Royal Warrant in the middle of 1925 and delivered its final report in the middle of 1927. The terms of reference to the Commission were as follows: "To consider the operation of the law relating to the support of the surface of the land, and of buildings or works on or under the surface, by underlying or adjacent minerals; to enquire into the extent and gravity of the damage caused by subsidence owing to the extraction of minerals and the incidence of the resulting liability; and to report what steps should be taken, by legislation or otherwise, to remedy, equitably to all persons concerned, any defects or hardships that may be found to arise in existing conditions."

In 1988, at the request of the Bureau of Land Management, the U.S. Bureau of Mines studied part of the 12,740-acre Blue Canyon Wilderness Study Area (OR-003-073) in order to evaluate its identified mineral resources. The study area is in Malheur County, OR, about 27 miles northwest of Jordan Valley. The study area is underlain by Tertiary welded tuff, tuff, perlite and tuffaceous sedimentary rocks capped by basalt. Jasper has been mined from several localities. Some mining has been done by hobbyists. However, the area has been covered by mining claims since 1964, with mining done by commercial operators. This region has been a source of "Owyhee picture" and other similar jaspers. More recent exploration has focused on the gold potential of nearby areas such as Quartz Mountain and Red Butte.

Newcrest Mining is one of the leading independent gold producers in Australia thanks in large part to its Cadia Valley operations. It is the largest gold and copper producer in New South Wales and one of the largest in Australia. This year Newcrest will expand its operations with a A$545-million expansion in the area. The Cadia Valley is approximately 250 km (155 miles) west of Sydney. The province presently includes the Cadia Hill opencut mine and the Ridgeway underground mine. With a significant mineralized system to the east of Cadia Hill and a mineral resource below Ridgeway, Cadia Valley has the potential to underpin Newcrest?s production for up to 30 years. In 2007, total gold production for the company in-creased to more than 50 t (1.6 million oz) and cash flow increased by 47 percent, according to the company?s annual report. The history of mining in the area dates back to 1851, but Newcrest?s history is young. In 1990, Newcrest commenced activities in the Cadia Valley. In 1992, Cadia Hill was discovered, with the discovery of Cadia East (1995) and Ridgeway (1996) following close behind. In 1998, the Cadia Hill openpit mine was commissioned. In 2002, the Ridgeway underground mine was commissioned and in 2007 the company?s board of directors approved an A$545 million development of the Ridgeway Deeps. The Ridgeway underground mine is located adjacent to Cadia Hill. The Ridgeway orebody has no surface expression but lies approximately 500 m (1,640 ft) below the surface and resembles an inverted teardrop. It measures approximately 450 m (1,476 ft) by 250 m (820 ft) and extends in excess of 850 m (2,788 ft) in depth. Ridgeway is a sublevel caving operation. Crushed ore from underground is delivered by conveyor to a surface stockpile, adjacent to the Ridgeway concentrator. Using similar processes to the adjacent Cadia Hill concentrator, gold and copper are recovered in a conventional flotation circuit to produce a copper concentrate containing elevated gold levels. Minerals and Metals Group (MMG) subsidiary Lane Xang Minerals Ltd operates a single site copper and gold mine near Sepon in Lao PDR. Gold production commenced in 2002 and first cathode copper production was in March 2006. Plant throughputs for gold and copper are currently 2.5 Mt/yr and 1.4 Mt/yr respectively; use of a second tailings dam has commenced accordingly. Although the increased catchment area creates opportunities for more storage to reduce demand on other water sources, especially during the dry season, it also creates greater requirements for water treatment capacity.The water balance for mining operations in a tropical monsoon environment with dry winters presents on going management challenges. A successful mining operation depends on a careful balance of water inputs and outputs. The challenge prior to every wet season is having enough storage capacity to absorb potential rainfall. Plant operation in the dry season benefits from water captured and stored from the wet season which reduces the dependence on river water. Release of excess water to the environment is necessary to cope with the overall positive water balance and depends on suitable and effective treatment of water in accordance with the environmental guidelines.Ausenco has recently built and commissioned a second water treatment plant at the Sepon Copper Plant to process tailings decant water.  The objective of the second Sepon water treatment facility is to increase the site water discharge capacity to maintain the water balance and reduce the dependence on river water.  Decant water treatment is required to precipitate the contained heavy metals prior to discharging to surrounding wetlands.  The main metal that needs to be removed from the site water to meet discharge water quality requirements is manganese, as heavy metals are already precipitated to required levels in neutralisation before the tailings are sent to the storage facilities. A site layout provision for removal of manganese to produce a saleable carbonate precipitate is incorporated in the polishing plant design (future installation).

A series of in situ pull test were performed on a new design friction stabilizer bolt with the objective of determining its performance characteristics. The bolt is installed while drilling, thus improving safety and significantly reducing the installation time. An optional expansion element can be inserted into the bolt to provide an end-anchorage, which further increases the bolt’s capacity. In situ tests show that the pull capacity of the 2 m long new design bolt is about 15 tons. When installed with an expansion element, the pull capacity of these bolts becomes as high as 30 tons.

Between 1989 and 1991, the greatest number of accidents in surface coal and metal/nonmetal mines involved haulage trucks. In 1995, the most frequently cited factor contributing to the 100 fatalities in these mines was powered haulage. In 1996, over 50% of the 84 Fatalities in mining that year were in surface mining. Because some of the world's largest mobile equipment is used in surface mines, and this equipment is involved in so many accidents and fatalities, new technologies are needed to alert truck drivers and people in spaces around the truck to the possibilities of collisions.

Experimental Mine, Val d'Or, Quebec, Experiments on the ignition of sulphide dust clouds by explosives have been conducted in a 1 m3 explosion chamber. The explosives tested are ANFO, emulsion, aluminized emulsion and Detasheet. By controlling the composition of the ANFO and the emulsion explosive the oxygen balance could be changed in order to identify the dominant factors in the ignition of sulphide dust clouds by explosives. Experimental results, combined with theoretical calculations, show that the temperature of the detonation products is the most important parameter in the ignition of the dust cloud while the combustible detonation products are of secondary importance in the case of non-aluminized mining explosives. In the case of aluminized explosives and explosives having very negative oxygen balance the ignition of the dust cloud is assisted by the large amount of combustible detonation products.

The formation and distribution of gold placers in active collisional mountain belts are directly related to the tectonic, topographic, climatic and erosional constraints prevailing on either side of the orogen at the time of placer formation. In the absence of pre-existing placer deposits, these factors combine to concentrate placer development on the side of the orogen facing the prevailing winds, where most of the erosion and uplift occurs. Drainage network changes and glaciation can significantly alter placer distribution with respect to source areas within the orogen. After collision stops, placer formation will proceed on both sides of the orogen as exhumation of the mountain belt ensues. Incorporation of pre-existing placers formed on ancient mountain belts into younger placers in subsequent orogens, may be recognised by anomalous placer distribution compared to the above model. Most of the relatively young giant placers such as those inNew Zealand, Chile, Bolivia and Columbia, exhibit these general patterns. Their character and mode of formation have important implications for the formation and distribution of much older placers, such as those in South Africa's Witwatersrand Basin.

This publication contains analyses and related source data for 675 natural gas samples from wells and pipelines in 24 States and 5 foreign countries. The samples obtained and analyzed during calendar year 1980 are included in tables 1-4. Those samples included in tables 5-7 were collected during the years 1960 through 1979. However, permission to publish the analyses of those samples was not given until the past year when the operators were again contacted to seek release of the information. All of these samples were collected as a part of Bureau of Mines investigations of the occurrences of helium in natural gases of countries with free market economies. This survey has been conducted in the United States by the Bureau of Mines since 1917. In late 1965, the survey was expanded to include foreign gasfields. The analyses published herein were made by mass spectrometer and a special helium analysis apparatus, which are described in Bureau of Mines Bulletins 4862 and 576. The results of the investigation of the occurrences of helium are published annually to make the information available as soon as possible to the gas industry and the general public. Twenty-two previous publications have presented the results of 12,152 gas analyses made prior to 1980. Paper written on project work carried out in partial fulfilment of B. Eng (Metallurgical Engineering) degree Electrowinning is an attractive method to recover gold from the relatively concentrated aurodicyanide solutions produced by the elution of loaded carbon, provided that the plated gold can be easily removed using high pressure water sprays. In practice, difficulty with the removal of the gold is occasionally experienced and has been correlated with the presence of high concentrations of copper in the eluate. In this work, the influence of copper on the electro-plating of gold was further investigated using a laboratory electrowinning cell with a rotating disc cathode, polarization, and adhesion tests. It was found that the reduction of copper will compete with gold electrowinning at high copper tenors and that the adhesion of the precipitated gold is also increased under these conditions.
