Rolled steel, steel forgings, and steel castings in the Pacific Northwest (Washington and Oregon) are produced principally in the Seattle, Wash., and Portland, Oreg., metropolitan areas. Steel-mill products are rolled from carbon and some alloy &eels by three companies into shapes such as reinforcing bar, rods, rounds, squares, flats, and hot-rolled strips; structural shapes, - such as angles, channels, and I-beams, also are rolled. Carbon and alloy steel ingots are poured and forged at a Seattle plant into ship shafting, drive shafts, billets, slabs, bars, rings, hooks, and other items. Static, shell, investment, and centrifugal castings are produced at 19 steel foundries in a wide range of steel specifications. All Pacific Northwest steel output is based on remelting steel scrap. Local iron ore might be used in the future to supplement steel scrap as a metal source. Ore reduction would probably be achieved by methods other than the blast furnace. Current melt-shop practice and problems are basically the same in Pacific Northwest steel plants as in cold-melt shops in other parts of the country. Quality steel production is receiving more emphasis in this region with the installation of modern analytical equipment and vacuum pouring and melting facilities.

The Lac des Iles Mine (LDI) is located approximately 100 km northwest of Thunder Bay, ON. The mine has been in operation since 1993. The initial mine production was 2,300 mtpd and increased to 15,000 mtpd following a mine expansion project that was completed in 2001. Effective Oct. 29, 2008, LDI was shut-down under care and maintenance due to low metal prices. Prior to shutting down, LDI was the only primary PGM deposit in operation in Canada and of the few found globally. The complex geology and physical properties of the deposit causes several challenges for the concentrator. This paper will discuss the solutions to the main challenges of attaining nameplate tonnage and achieve satisfactory Pd recovery and concentrate grades.

The African continent has been the most prolific producer of gold since mining began. Although most of this gold has come from South Africa, other countries have also been important contributors in the past. There is currently little production outside South Africa, Ghana and Zimbabwe, but the gradual globalisation of the industry over the past decade has resulted in growing interest in the region which bodes well for its future development. "Biological leaching can be used to enhance the recovery of gold and silver from refractory ores, concentrates and tailings. The method liberates precious metals associated with sulphide minerals such as pyrite and arsenopyrite making them amenable to cyanidation. The chemistry and features of biological preoxidation leaching is discussed. A summary of the results obtained on various ores, concentrates and tailings is presented.INTRODUCTIONRefractory precious metal ores in which gold and silver are finely disseminated in sulphide minerals such as pyrite and arsenopyrite are becoming more important to the mining industry. This is due both to a depletion of simpler, free-milling ores and to a significant increase in the price of gold in recent years. Whereas many ores can be directly cyanided with gold solubilizations over 90% obtained, the refractory ores respond poorly to direct cyanidation and require decomposition of the precious metal-bearing sulphide minerals to increase recoveries.Decomposition of sulphides by oxidation prior to cyanidation can be carried out by several means. The oldest method is roasting which removes unwanted ore constituents by high temperature oxidation and volatilization. In Canada, for example, roasting is used at Giant Yellowknife (Connell and Cross, 1981). Another method gaining increasing acceptance is pressure hydrometallurgy which uses aqueous oxidation conducted at high temperature and pressure. Homestake Mining Company have recently completed construction of a plant incorporating pressure oxidation at their Mclaughlin property in California (Guinivire, 1984)."

The Bureau of Mines conducted a series of experiments using Illinois No. 6 coal to determine the effect of asymmetric wear on airborne respirable dust (ARD), specific energy, cutting force, and normal force. Plumb-bob-type bits--one new bit and four ground with different sized flats--were used. Constant-depth linear cuts at 0.32, 0.64, 1.27, and 2.54-cm cut depths were made. Both cutting force and normal force increased as the flat area increased. Specific energy demonstrated a statistically significant increase with flat area at the 0.32-and 1.27-cm cut depth only. Specific ARD showed a statistically significant decrease with increasing flat area only at the 0.64-cm cut depth. Increasing cut depth increased cutting force but decreased specific energy and specific ARD. Normal force increased with increasing cut depth for the new bit but exhibited a maximum at 0.64 cm for the bits with flats.

The Northern Baikal Ni-Cu province is located in Buryatia, south-east Siberia, and geologically is part of the Baikal-Muya volcano-plutonic belt. It is known for numerous PGE-Ni-Cu-bearing mafic-ultramafic intrusions of Neoproterozoic age formed in various geodynamic settings. All these deposits can be regarded as a single Ni-Cu ore cluster located near the Kholodninskoe Pb-Zn deposit, which is ready for mining. In addition, there are less studied, small dyke-like bodies with sulfide mineralisation that formed in a rift setting and may be enriched in Ni, Cu and PGE. Individually, the known bodies are of poor commercial value by their resources, but their close spatial association (<30 km) may make these PGE-Ni-Cu deposits economic in the future. This extended abstract seeks to provide a geological framework of the North Baikal Ni-Cu-PGE province, specifically at the north-eastern Synnyr rift hosting numerous small subvolcanic bodies with Ni-Cu sulfide mineralisation. Some small subvolcanic bodies contain industrial level Ni-Cu deposits (Shanuch, Cabanga-Musongati, Voisey’s Bay, Jinchuan, etc).CITATION:Kislov, E V, 2015. Many technology problems must be solved if we are to continue to produce phosphate at our current rate of consumption. The U.S. produces at least 25% of the world's phosphate, 40 million tons of phosphate rock per annum with most of the production coming from Florida. Of particular concern are improved separation efficiency and the ability to treat new dolomitic resources. Phosphate flotation technology needs include: 1. Simplification of the standard flowsheet 2. Improved recovery of coarse phosphate 3. Selective flotation for phosphate recovery from dolomitic resources Preliminary results, including tests on plant feed from Florida show that these objectives may be achieved with a new collector chemistry depending on the specific circumstances. The effectiveness of the new collector chemistry has been demonstrated by the preliminary results from single stage flotation experiments both at the University of Utah laboratories and at Florida Institute of Phosphate Research (FIPR) laboratories. In the best case, from these experiments with low grade (5% P2O5) coarse feed (16x35 mesh), a single stage phosphate recovery of 95 % was achieved with a concentrate grade of 31 % P2O5. Such a separation efficiency could not be achieved using the traditional fatty acid/fuel oil collector. Based on these results it seems that a one step process may be possible for phosphate flotation and a research program is justified for the development of this new flotation strategy.

In the absence of values for each influencing parameter and a known relationship of input-output space, novel approaches should be implemented as proxy solutions to mathematically complicated problems. Proxy solutions can be in the form of linear or non-linear multiple regression equations. Predicting the performance of gob gas ventholes is one of these mathematically complicated problems as it is difficult to know the exact relationships between various parameters influencing gob gas venthole (GGV) performance from active and sealed (completed) longwall panels. In this paper, a discussion of the NIOSH-developed software suite for methane control and prediction (MCP) based on an artificial neural network (ANN) is presented. The application of the ANN-based software suite to develop algebraic relationships for gob gas venthole performance prediction in sealed and active longwall panels is sought. Output information obtained from the NIOSH-MCP software as a response to various input parameters were used to create an input-output database for total flow and methane percentage from GGVs operating in active mines during completed and sealed panel situations. Due to the multi-variable nature of the software, outputs generated using the software for various inputs were used to develop analytical equations first using linear and then second using non-linear multivariable regression techniques. The advantage of this method is its ability to better understand the significant parameters of the relationships between the inputs and outputs for gob gas venthole production in active and sealed panels and to be able to predict their performances using relatively simple analytical functions.

Also, because of recent enactment of the Synthetic Fuels Corp. authorizing up to $88 billion in loan and price guarantees-federal financing will provide the critical incentive to permit private investment in a still infant industry.

A modified Hallimond tube is described which allows the determination of the ultimate recovery R and the flotation rate constant k in a single, continuous experiment. The range of fine particles which can be satisfactorily floated with the modified apparatus can be extended by increasing the length of the bottom part of the tube. Findings suggest that pyrite and arsenopyrite can be separated in alkaline suspension using the so-called F series of collectors. Lime was found to act as a depressant. The collectors operate under pH and dosage control and do not require other depressants. Collectors used in the study were thio-amine (a cationic surfactant) and alkyl propionamide (a non-ionic surfactant)

Phase I study efforts addressed: 1) acid mine drainage formation theory; 2) effects of inundation in reducing acid mine drainage formation; 3) summary information on the types of acid abatement technology currently available and the problems inherent in each; 4) analysis of two potential means of partially inundating abandoned segments of active underground mines to reduce acid formation. This subsequent Phase II Draft Final Report addresses all of the above, but concentrates on and defines Item 4. Seal construction techniques were taken through five logical steps as follows: A) Location Analysis; B) Coal Barrier Pillar Analysis: C) Ground Water Analysis; D) Design Considerations: E) Economic Analysis. The design details of both low wall dams and section seals were discussed in a series of segments: a) Case Histories; b) Feasibility Analysis; and c) Design (including representative calculations). Study efforts showed that both concepts are feasible only in certain mines where the geologic-hydrologic physical makeup is suitable to contain a mine pool. Low wall dams in particular were found to have extremely limited applicability as a means of pollution reduction. Section seals, while clearly dependent upon site specific conditions, have a some what broader range of utility and are more effective in pollution reduction. The proven dramatic reduction in acid mine drainage attributable to inundation makes this a concept that must be considered.

Miners, like many skilled blue-collar workers, are not traditional learners. They have not generally been successful in classroom-type settings, preferring to learn on the job in a hands-on environment. U.S. miners are required to have annual safety training, but they rarely view this positively. In fact, it has been called “safety jail” by many of them, who regard it as a time to get a little extra sleep. The challenge then, was to find a way to develop effective safety training for these people, particularly in view of the fact that their work is among the most dangerous of all occupations. Miners are born story tellers. They share “near-miss” stories, stories about master miners they have known, and stories about how things used to be. These stories not only pass along information about what will happen if a miner fails to respect the mining environ-ment, they also instruct listeners in the culture of mining and the values it embraces. Stories, it seems, are a way to get safety messages to miners, especially inexperienced ones, and using older, wiser miners in these stories is an obvious choice. This paper will discuss how the training videos created to get safety messages to miners were developed, how “master miners” and story lines were chosen, and how the resulting videos have been received in the mining industry.

To maximise recovery by highwall mining, pillars must be designed which are long, slender and of relatively low width-to-height ratios. The strength of pillars with width/height less than 2 depends primarily on the mechanical response of the coal, due to the reduced influence of frictional restraint between roof and floor. A suitable pillar design approach therefore requires a method of estimating coal-seam properties. Experimental studies were carried out to determine ways of reliably predicting the large-scale mechanical properties of coal seams from small-scale test data. The studies led to a method of practical, systematic assessment of coal-seam properties based on measurement of coal rank and seam brightness profiles. The criterion employs the parameters sigma(c), m and s of the generalised Hoek-Brown empirical strength criterion for rock masses. Since 2007, a number of Multivariable Predictive Control (MPC) Applications have been implemented on SAG mills, among others, within the Kairos Mining Concentrator Automation Program using ?Profit Controller?? and other tools comprising the ?Profit Suite??. Along this journey, several interesting and challenging issues related to SAG mill operation and control have been faced, which are relevant to be shared with the Mineral Processing community. These advanced control applications have an operational objective whose goal is to increase marginal profit on the concentrator, together with increasing mill stability. In regard to this objective, the issues to be presented and described are in direct relationship with ?Profit Controller? features and the SAG role; they are also stated and linked to get the most of the mill. Some conclusions and findings are also presented, leading to recommended practices on how to use the controller. These findings have also lead us to decide further actions to be taken on new applications to deploy and also on devising and implementing some complementary components to increase robustness of the overall automation solution, as well as reducing the need for operator intervention.

With increasing demand for real-time monitoring of mine parameters, the requirement for appropriate data management in many mining applications is also increasing. This includes atmospheric monitoring in underground coal and metal mines. Although a number of different (real-time) monitoring systems have been installed in underground mines, they all typically share the same systems or sub-systems, where each sub-system may include both custom hardware and / or software components. In addition, monitoring components installed in underground coal mines in the USA should also be intrinsically safe and approved by the US Mine Safety and Health Administration. Real-time analysis adds complexity to the system since data validation and storage should be completed independently of filtering, data reduction operations, or visualization. Real-time processing may include statistical evaluation, trending, cross-correlation, and real-time alarm or warning generation. This paper presents the concept and design of an integrated system under development for atmospheric monitoring in US coal mines.

A study of copper cementation on iron was initiated to determine the effect that deposited copper has upon subsequent cementation. A microscopic investigation of cementation on an iron surface showed that cupric ion precipitates predominately on a growing copper deposit attached to the iron surface. A kinetic study of the cementation process in a revolving drum showed that the cementation rate is enhanced by the copper deposit attached to the iron surface and by the discrete copper particles of a cement copper slurry. The kinetic study also indicated that the character of the deposit is affected by the major anion in the solution. The cementation process is visualized to occur as a series of electrochemical cells in which cupric ion precipitates on copper dendrites attached to the iron surface.

SYNOPSIS A Wirth tunnel borer owned by Anglo American Corporation completed a 1150m long tunnel some years ago and was subsequently extensively modified by Technical Development Services. In 1982 this borer provided new and particularly interesting information In the field of hard rock boring. The abrasive quartzltes traversed proved to be a challenge to the cutter manufacturer and the project team. This paper examines the problems faced, the solutions found and the lessons learnt.
