To mitigate and control the combined sewer overflows from 17 outfalls in the City of Detroit, three outfalls in Dearborn Heights and eight outfalls in Redford Township, the Detroit Water and Sewerage Department has completed the preliminary design of a storage tunnel in 2005. In 2006, a final design has revised the alignments and the inside diameter (ID) of the tunnel. The revised tunnel system includes an 11.28-km(7-miles) 9.14-m (30-ft) ID tunnel, a 24.4-m (80-ft) ID pump station, two work shafts about 15.2-m (50-ft) ID each, and 14 drop shafts with various IDs. This paper discusses the latest development of this tunnel system.

"Current understanding of the mechanisms by which glassy and crystalline thin ribbons are formed in high speed continuous casting processes is considered. A computer model of the combined heat and momentum transfer during melt spinning has been developed. The influence of roll velocity and of heat transfer coefficient (between the melt and the roll) on the temperature and velocity distributions within the melt puddle is analysed and the thickness of the extracted ribbon computed. The relative importance of heat and momentum transfer under different conditions is assessed and differences between the casting of crystalline and amorphous strip highlighted.IntroductionHigh speed continuous casting of thin metallic ribbon and strip is currently of considerable interest both to metal processers and to those studying process mechanisms. The practical interest arises both from the potential economic benefits to be gained from a shorter and more energy-efficient production route and from the ability to obtain extended and uniform thin strip having a metastable microcrystalline or amorphous structure with enhanced or unique properties. The latter arise from the rapid solidification associated with the cooling of very thin sections of melt brought into intimate thermal contact with one or two rapidly moving heat sinks.The principal processes for casting thin strip include free jet, chill-block melt-spinning (GBMS) (1), melt drag (MD) (2), planar flow casting (PFG) (3) and twin-roll casting (TRG) (4). For the first three of these, all essentially variants of melt-spinning, melt flows through a nozzle onto the circumferential surface of a rapidly rotating roll, whereas for TRG the melt passes into the nip between two contra-rotating rolls. We shall be concerned in this paper with the single-roll melt spinning processes only. For these, a puddle is established where the melt contacts the roll surface and the length of this puddle l is a function of the process conditions, notably the circumferential velocity of the roll Us and the volumetric flow rate of the melt Q. The contact time between any point on the roll surface and this puddle, or residence time eR(= l /Us) determines the thickness of ribbon t extracted from the puddle. This thickness, in turn, partly governs the cooling rate T and the amount of undercooling in the melt and thus the microstructure of the solidified ribbon."

"Deformation Banding ( DB ) in cold rolled mild steel has been experimentally established by microstructure investigation. Deformation banding model includes such deformation mode when it is applied to rolling texture simulation. The cause for the occurrence of deformation banding is the reduction of the total work for plastic deformation through a relaxation of the deformation constraints. In the first DB model, all grains are assumed to band from the first deformation step. Such an unrealistic assumption has been eliminated in the new model by the introduction of a banding criterion based on an energy minimizing approach. The prediction is closer to the measured texture by applying banding criterion and setting critical resolved shear stresses (CRSS) ratio for { 110 } and { 112 } slip modes to 0.85.IntroductionBased on the continuum theory of plastic flow and deformation mechanism of crystallographic dislocation slip, Taylor's FC ( Full Constrain ) theory [1] has been widely used in texture modeling. As the process of cold rolling of sheet materials produces a microstructure consisting of elongated or equiaxed flat grain or cell, the ""lath"" and ""pancake"" relaxed constraints ( RC ) models [2, 3] were introduced as the successful improvements over the classical FC model. It has been also recognized that crystals may split into different orientations during deformation and the term deformation banding is used to describe such deformation processes [4, 5]. Lee et al. [6, 7] pointed out that the success of the RC theory in predicting textures depends on the physical processes of deformation banding. They developed so called Deformation Banding ( DB ) model by considering DB in the longitudinal plane to be accounted for by the RC method and allowing DB in the rolling plane. DB model was applied to simulate the texture development in bee case [8], the predicted bee rolling textures are in reasonable agreement with the measured textures. In the first DB model, however, all grains are assumed to band right upon the first deformation step. A banding criterion was formulated [7] which states that DB will occur if the work used in DB model is less than that in RC model. Such criterion has been incorporated into the original DB model for texture simulation and is referred to as DBC ( Deformation Banding Criterion ) model."

There are available today many various types of mixing systems, tank types and process liquors confronting the process designer of gold adsorption circuits. This short paper is to give the process designer an insight into the special mixing requirements for resin-in-leach and resin-in-pulp, plus the advantages and disadvantages of the various mixing systems that are available to agitate the required tank shapes. An understanding of the latest developments in this important process area of gold production is addressed and information given on the results of resin degradation in various tank sizes over long periods of mechanical agitation.

The title of my talk is "The Gold Miner and the Future of Gold." This title might just as accurately have been stated as "Gold and the Future of the Gold Miner." Since prehistoric times gold has been sought by mankind for its beauty and its unusual physical and chemical properties. Early in the dawn of civilization it became the ultimate unit of value and lubricated trade between peoples. For at least 6000 years, gold has been used to barter for other commodities. It has been prospected for, treasured, made into works of art and personal adornment, and from time to time has been the object of conquest. Because of its predominant role in recent centuries as a basis for money, economists began to think of it solely in these terms. Annoyed by the disciplinary pressure of gold on the money manager's desire to manipulate money, the famous economist, John Maynard Keynes, characterized it as a "barbaric relic of the past", a characterization repeated by William McChesney Martin, Jr., when he was head of the Federal Reserve Bank. Gold, however, has physical and chemical properties that make it one of the most useful metals in the modern world.' It is the most ductile metal known. An ounce of gold, for example, can be drawn into a continuous wire over 35 miles long. It also is so malleable that an ounce of gold can be beaten into films ten one-millionths of an inch thick sufficient to cover 68 sq ft of surface. It has a density of 19.3 and is so heavy that 1 cu ft of gold weighs more than half a ton. Gold is nonmagnetic and has a high electric conductivity, only slightly less than silver and copper. Gold is so inert to all the chemicals found in nature that gold coins and jewelry buried beneath the soil or at the bottom of the sea for thousands of years appear to be as bright and perfect as when they were first immersed. Finally, gold has an extremely high reflectivity both to light and infrared rays. Because of these qualities, in addition to its rare beauty, industrial and artistic uses of gold have been growing rapidly. On a world basis, a recent study estimated that in 1960 about 750 tons of gold were used for fabrication, and that the amount had grown to about 1296 tons in 1968. My objective in this talk is to discuss with you the present and future supply of and demand for gold on a worldwide basis and the effect these forces are likely to have on the price the miner can expect to receive for the gold he produces. Discussion of the paper of Robert H. Richards, presented at the Butte meeting, August, 1913, and printed in Bulletin No. 81, September, 1913, pp. 2299 to 2303. C. D. DEMOND, Anaconda, Mont. (communication to the Secretary*) :-Any one who has observed the increased efficiency of the Wilfley tables in a mill when fed from a reasonably good hydraulic classifier, as compared with tables fed from a spitzkasten., which is a very poor classifier, will agree to the advantage of ? better classification." It must be gratifying to Dr. Richards to know that, directly or indirectly, maim mill men are responding to his persistent advocacy of correct principles of ore dressing and are accepting the results of his investigations. As he says, these principles mean much for both the conservation of resources and the profit of operators. When Dr. Richards gives us accurate figures as to the maximum size of free mineral grains in the tailings of the Wilfley table and of the vanner, they will be of a good deal of practical value in delimiting the proper fields for the Wilfley, the vanner, and the round table. He has coined the terms ? free settling" and "hindered settling."' The series may be completed by adding "crowded settling," the main principle of action on both the vanner and the Wilfley table, which is the principle of separation in a mass of grains crowded as closely together as they can be and yet continue free to move between one another; and the occurrence of larger mineral particles in the Wilfley tailing than in that from the vanner is apparently caused by the more violent agitation, due chiefly to the purposely sudden reversal of the stroke. It seems likely that the agitation caused by the wash water dropping directly upon the concentrate on the vanner is more harmful than that due to the shake. For the very finest material that can be concentrated by usual methods, the round table is superior to the vanner because it does not, have even, the gentle agitation of the latter. The action on round tables is, not crowded settling," but "film sizing," 2 but agitation is harmful in the latter action. George Gates proved this harm 20 years ago : in slaking the first successful large-scale application of canvas tables in California gold mills he abandoned all shaking motion, although he had patented canvas tables to which such motion was applied.

The first paper in this series1 outlined practical methods for applying the theory of steady-state flow of an ideal Bingham plastic liquid through a circular pipe and axially through a stationary concentric annulus to the enginekring analysis of friction loss problems. In the present paper the properties of another useful rheological model, the pseudoplastic generalized Newtonian liquid, are considered. The terminology applied to the rheological models is derived from the following classification of rheological models. The term "generalized Newtonian" is a class designation applied to models which do not have yield points but which exhibit a dependence on shear rate. The term "pseudoplastic" applies to a sub-group of models within this class which exhibit a decrease in "viscosity" with increasing shear rate. The term "power model" refers to a mathematical model proposed for describing the behavior of the pseudoplastic liquid. This model is of interest since certain of the salt saturated, oil emulsion, and "low solids" drilling fluids, inverted emulsion- and oil-base drilling fluids, aqueous gels, gelled crudes and blocking agents employed in hydraulic fracturing operations are of this type. The present treatment considers the equations describing steady-state Poiseuille flow through a circular pipe and a stationary concentric annul us, and Couette flow between concentric rotating cylinders for a particular pseudoplastic model. As in the previous paper' it is demonstrated how these equations can be applied to engineering calculations of friction losses. Graphical procedures for recovering the various flow curves and cxample calculations are included. A method for simplifying turbulent-flow correlations is also proposed. PROPERTIES OF PSEUDOPLASTIC GENERALIZED NEWTONIAN LIQUID In contrast to the Bingham plastic the generalized Newtonian liquid is yield point-free. However, in the flow region the relation between stress and rate of shear is not linear as it is with ordinary Newtonian fluids. If the stress increases with shear rate at a less than linear rate the system is called pseudoplastic. While there is no yield point in this system, the Bingham advocates' coined the term pseudoplastic to distinguish this kind of behavior from Bingham plastic behavior. For the pseudoplastic a plot of flow rate vs friction loss or rpm vs torque, from pipe flow or rotational viscometer measurements, respectively, generally has three qualities: (1) it can be clearly extrapolated toward the origin; (2) there is very little slope at the origin. This accounts for the high apparent viscosities at low mixing and pumping rates; and (3) the flow curve possesses a continuous curvature which gradually diminishes as the shear increases. Rheological measurements on a pseudoplastic liquid can be easily misinterpreted as indicating Bingham plastic behavior. A typical case in point is illustrated in Fig. 1. These data were obtained from measurements on an oil-emulsion mud using a commercially available rotational-type viscometer (Model 35 Fann V-G meter). Applying the "two-point"* method3 gives a plastic viscosity of 17 cp and a yield point of 24 lb/100 ft2; at the same time weighting material settles very easily in this system. This illustrates that it is not possible to distinguish between the pseudoplastic and the Bingham plastic from only two data points. It is possible to determine qualitatively which model is more appropriate by a combination of dynamic and static measurements. Experience indicates that the simplest criterion for the Bingham plastic liquid is that the calculated dynamic yield point should be of the same magnitude as the measured gel strengths. "This paper describes the objectives and design parameters for the operation of a computerized In-The-Hole (I. T.H.) Drill. The principal objective is to add computer control to an Inco 00-60 I. T.H. (CMS-CD-90) drill in order to drill holes with greater accuracy. The computer provides control of the angle of the hole by maintaining the orientation of the drill head, and optimizes the straightness of the hole by maintaining a constant force on the drill bit.The second objective is to provide the greatest degree of operational automation, so the objective outlined above can be accomplished with a minimum of operator intervention.In order to provide full operational automation it was necessary to also provide the capability for the computer to add and remove drill rods. To accomplish this, a rod-handling mechanism consisting of a rod storage rack and rod manipulator arms was used.IntroductionMining machinery that lacks automatic control has been found to show a high degree of variation in work output and performance quality when operated by different personnel. Differences in operator attitude, judgment, and skill are reflected directly by production statistics. The addition of automated control has the potential for considerable improvement in machine life and performance. Even with a more acceptable mine environment and much safer conditions than ever before, situations still exist where it is preferable to remove personnel for reasons of safety as well as productivity. Typical advantages of such situations are automated skip loading and hoisting, and the use of remote control load-haul-dump units exposed to open stopes.Other cases arise where heavy work is required under conditions where lighting is poor, floors are slippery, noise levels are high and dust and oil mist exist in the atmosphere. I.T.H. drilling is carried out under such conditions and is one operation where automation can easily be justified."

"Dust control is an increasingly important consideration for all mining operations from a health, safety, environmental and maintenance perspective. Modern mining operations incorporate a variety of mechanical dust control techniques into design however in many cases these engineered systems are unable to meet desired fugitive dust level targets. In these cases a variety of chemical dust suppression options are available to operators to assist in meeting their targets. This paper provides an overview of available chemistries, discussion of application techniques and equipment requirements and available performance monitoring technologies. This paper will also include a number of case histories discussing the treatment approach chosen, challenges encountered, chemical feed, storage and application equipment, monitoring techniques employed and results achieved.INTRODUCTIONDust FundamentalsFugitive dust by definition is an aerosol consisting of particulate matter suspended in a gaseous medium. Aerosols can include suspensions of particulate (solids) or sprays (liquids) or a mixture of both. Of particular concern from an occupational health and safety perspective are aerosols of particulate matter due to their involvement in classical occupations lung diseases such as silicosis, poisoning through chronic exposure to compounds such as lead and beryllium and expected involvement in more modern identified conditions such as cancer, asthma, and a host of other respiratory and non-respiratory conditions which may be caused or influenced through exposure to dust.According to the ""Glossary of Atmospheric Chemistry Terms"" (IUPAC, 1990), ""Dust: Small, dry, solid particles projected into the air by natural forces, such as wind, volcanic eruption, and by mechanical or man-made processes such as crushing, grinding, milling, drilling, demolition, shoveling, conveying, screening, bagging, and sweeping. Dust particles are usually in the size range from about 1 to 100 µm in diameter, and they settle slowly under the influence of gravity."" It should be noted that the behavior of particulates with respect to settling rate in air is a function of particle mass and shape and therefore the geometric size of the particle can be misleading. Occupational hygienists utilize the concept of particle aerodynamic diameter as a more representative reflection of particle size. Particle aerodynamic diameter, is defined as ""the diameter of a hypothetical sphere of density 1 g/cm3 having the same terminal settling velocity in calm air as the particle in question, regardless of its geometric size, shape and true density."" The expression of particle size as aerodynamic diameter allows for a more consistent understanding of particle behavior both from a settling perspective as well as from the perspective of how dust particles will behave in the respiratory tract. Figure 1 illustrates settling rates for particles of various aerodynamic diameters. The relationship between particle size and settling rate is important for understanding what size of particles must be addressed by dust control strategies as well as what particle sizes represent the most danger from an exposure and occupational health perspective."

Variograms can be powerful tools for the analysis and control of process streams and their sampling. Their uses and proper utilisation have been described somewhat unclearly to date, and their limitations and precautions of use are too rarely mentioned. The general meaning and properties of the variogram tool and its use in geostatistics are therefore reviewed in details to derive a critical view of its proper use for process control: what to expect from it and what it cannot deliver and which uses are illusory or potentially misleading. This section deals with one of the most fascinating aspects of mining the evaluation of mine investment opportunities. Be-fore proceeding further, it is important to clarify the meaning of some fundamental terms used frequently in the text. 6.0.1.1 Mine Valuation vs. Evaluation The words "valuation" and "evaluation" in a mining context are often used interchangeably. However, for the purposes of this section, a distinction is made between the two terms in accordance with commonly accepted practice. The word valuation in a mining project context has the rather narrow meaning of placing a dollar or other currency value on the worth of the project as a whole. In other words, the value of a mining project refers to a measure of the desirability of ownership of that property. As such, the major item of interest is, "what is the mine worth?," or `what is the value of the mine?" The value of a mining project may actually be determined in the marketplace at any specific point in time, or it may be estimated by one of several methods. "The technical and economic feasibility or re-processing hundreds of millions of tons of tailings in a number of historic gold tailings dams in the Witwatersrand area of South Africa is being investigated. The objective is to recover uranium and residual gold from the tailings, as well as to oxidize the sulphides to eliminate long term environmental liabilities associated with acid mine drainage. The tailings from the re-processing plant will be re-deposited in a new area far from urbanization, allowing for the rehabilitation of the real estate currently occupied by these historic tailings.The first step in the process involves a mild-regrind and mild acid leach of the tailings (pH 2.5 to 3.0) to dissolve up to 40% of the uranium. This uranium is recovered directly from the pulp by resin in pulp (RIP) with a strong base resin. The RIP tails are then treated by flotation to recover a rougher pyrite concentrate, and flotation tailings that are discarded. The rougher concentrate is cleaned to produce a final pyrite concentrate and cleaner scavenger tailings, and the pyrite concentrate is oxidized in an autoclave to leach uranium and generate acid. The autoclave discharge is combined with the cleaner scavenger tails, and the acid and ferric ions generated in the autoclave are used to leach more uranium and oxidize more sulphide in the cleaner tails. The product from the concentrate leach circuit is processed by resin in pulp for uranium recovery, followed by neutralization, cyanidation and carbon in pulp for gold recovery.The rougher float tails may be further treated to recover gold that was not recovered in flotation, but which had been liberated from the old dumps by natural oxidation of some of the pyrite over many decades. The float tails would be neutralized and treated by cyanidation and CIL to recover this liberated gold.All parts of the flowsheet have been extensively tested in the laboratory, and the critical elements of flotation, pressure oxidation and resin in pulp have been demonstrated in pilot plants. The results of the hydrometallurgical investigations are presented here."

The profitability of individual ore blocks can be classed as clearly profitable, clearly not profitable, and those in between which are by nature quite sensitive to their major cost and revenue drivers. It is often the case that the most effort goes into the least profitable ore blocks to ensure that these will in fact not generate a loss. In these cases a cut-off grade policy is often not sufficiently live to separate individual sources given the volatility of financial markets and individual circumstances of some sources particularly in remnant operations such as Mount Isa MinesÆ Lead Mine. Standard sensitivity analysis can determine which factors stope profitability is most sensitive to. However, this does not usually indicate the likelihood of any input change, nor the combined effect of multiple inputs changing. The author attempted to modify the Lead Stream financial model that determines cash margin by inserting probability distribution functions and then using Monte Carlo simulations to determine the probability of any particular ore block making a profit. This effectively demonstrates the combined effect of varying a number of inputs simultaneously to provide a probability of making a profit. The limitations of this analysis lie in the accuracy that individual probability distributions can be specified. Attempts to generate valid functions from first principles have proved difficult for a number of reasons and these are discussed along with some practical alternatives.

A mineral grain finder is described which is easily constructed to fit onto the stage of a standard reflected light ore microscope.The device is most useful in relocating particular grains or mineral associations on 30 mm diameter polished sections. The use of the grain finder in the teaching of ore microscopy is outlined.

Seventy-four human factors research and development projects were identified for possible Bureau funding. The projects were based on (1) literature surveys, (2) reviews of accident statistics and reports, (3) interviews with equipment manufacturers, MSHA, and Bureau personnel, and (4) site visits to 26 mines. The projects are divided into the following categories: those related to (1) mobile equipment, (2) maintenance shops and areas, (3) plants and mills, (4) organizational factors, (5) safety programs/data, and (6) training. The projects were rated by industry and MSHA people in terms of benefit to the industry. Projects were placed into three categories of priority. The highest priority contained 25 projects with 26 in Category 2, and 23 projects in the lowest category.

The energy and climate protection policy of European Union (EU), and its Member States adopted in 2007 bridges security of supply, environmental protection and competitiveness. The objectives of the EU energy and environmental strategy cover the foreseeable period till 2020. It assumes all sources of energy will be needed. The objectives for renewable and improved efficiency are ambitious; it must be established if they are also realistic. Coal can continue to make valuable contribution to the security of supply and low price of electricity, only with technologies allowing for drastic reduction of the CO2 emitted of its combustion. The aimed at -20% reduction of green-house gases (GHG) of EU-27 by 2020 is an objective limited in time and content. Europe produces less than 15% of global CO2 and this will be reduced to 10% in 2030. Emissions Trading (ET) is to remain the central instrument for CO2 management, especially in the power sector. ET scheme (ETS) or other mechanisms need designing to create an incentive for investment in higher efficiency and technologies and to Carbon Capture & Storage (CCS). The ETS as the climate protection instrument of the EU can become a heavy burden (high fuel and electricity prices, less security of supply) or it can create a climate for modernization of fossil fuel power plants. The suggestion in this paper of fuel-specific benchmark system for CO2 allocation after 2012 can combine the emission levels to be reached with a strong drive to invest, the necessary investment security, transparency and the principle of proportionality. A Benchmark System as recommended by coal industry could adapt to the different circumstances in the long term and comply with EU energy and environmental policy objectives.

Field measurements and theoretical studies have been made of pressure surges—momentary variations in fluid pressure—produced by movement of pipe in mud-filled boreholes. Pressure measurements were recorded by five pressure gauges located at various positions in the borehole. An important positive pressure peak was found to occur as the casing moved with maximum velocity. Important negative peaks were found as the casing was lifted from the slips and as brakes were applied to stop pipe movement. A rigorously formulated theory has successfully predicted the sequence and magnitudes of these positive and negative surges and has established a basis for understanding how they occur. Both the measurements and theory indicate that the most important pressure surge is usually due to viscous drag of the flowing mud. The theory of viscous-drag pressure surges has been approximated by simplified graphs and calculation procedures to facilitate ready use in field operations. Comparison of measured results with those predicted by the simplified theory shows that the magnitude of this surge can be predicted accurately. INTRODUCTION It is widely recognized that raising or lowering pipe in a fluid-filled borehole produces momentary variations in fluid pressure, commonly called pressure surges. Both negative (or "swabbing") surges and positive (or "fracturing") surges may occur. In 1934, Cannon1 measured the negative surges and showed that they could be large enough to cause flow of formation fluids into the well-bore and, in extreme cases, lead to blowout conditions. Later, Coins2 measured the positive surges associated with lowering pipe. His results and subsequent field operations strikingly demonstrated that pressure surges could be an important factor in some cases of lost returns. In addition, although the evidence is less clear than in the case of blowouts and lost returns, other investigators 3, 4 feel that pressure surges probably play a part in many instances of minor gas cutting, salt-water flow and other hole trouble. The importance of pressure surges in drilling operations led naturally to attempts to explain the physical causes, nature and magnitude of the surges. Cardwell5 was the first to publish a theory which allowed the quantitative prediction of momentary pressure variations. He assumed that the drilling fluid was a 300-cp Newtonian fluid in turbulent flow. Most field muds have a considerably lower viscosity and are generally believed to be Bingham plastic in nature.6 However, card-well's results were useful because they were presented in a form convenient for field use and, in some cases, gave a reasonably accurate predicted value for the maximum pressure surge. Subsequently, Ormsby7 published a more comprehensive theory of pressure surges. He discussed both laminar and turbulent flow and considered the theory of mud-bypass devices for reducing pressure surges. As a consequence of his more rigorous approach, his results were more accurate but more complex and difficult to use. Further, both Ormsby and Cardwell considered only the pressure surge arising from viscous drag of the moving mud. Clark later published idealized graphs of surges and presented equations for predicting their magnitudes. In addition to pressure variations arising from viscous drag, he considered those caused by inertial effects. His theory was in this respect more complete than those of Cardwell and Ormsby, although he did not discuss pressures due to breaking of the gel. Furthermore, his equations, while not exceptionally complicated, were too complex for ready use at a drilling location. One difficulty common to all three theories is that none was tested rigorously by direct comparison with measured pressure surges. Their accuracy, therefore, could, not be demonstrated. Further, the two theories based on most realistic assumptions (Ormsby and Clark) required the solution of one or more rather complex algebraic equations. The research described in this paper was undertaken to supplement that described and to overcome some of the difficulties noted. It seemed obvious that a fully satisfactory study of pressure surges should encompass three main phases. 1. A valid theory useful in all field situations must be developed. This theory must be based upon realistic assumptions, must be formulated rigorously and should lead to clear concepts whereby the nature of pressure surges can be easily understood. 2. The theory, however complex and involved, ultimately must be presented in simplified form for convenient field use. This may involve extensive machine computations and the use of figures and empirical equations. 3. The accuracy of the simplified equations must be established by comparing measured pressure surges with those predicted by the theory. These must agree both in their characteristic nature and in magnitude. 'This means that careful measurements of surges occurring in actual field operations must be made.

The incidence of liquid inzmiscibility in binar)) indium alloys has been theoretically analyzed on the basis of the Hildebrand-Alott equation. Bedictions of miscibility or otherwise Imve in general been found to agree with those phase diagrams that are already publislzed in the literature. Out of a total of 27 systems, where either the complete phase diagrams are published or liquid immiscible behavior is reported, the Predictions agree with the experimental data in 25 systems, the exceptions being the Te-In and Ni-In systems. According to the equation, liquid immiscibility is also indicated in the binary alloys of indium with K, Rb, Cs, Na, Sr, Ba, Ti, Zr, V. Nb(Cb), Ta, W, U, Re, Ru, Rh, Os, and Ir. RECENT investigations by the author have shown that indium when alloyed with iron, chromium, and cobalt shows liquid immiscible behavior.1"3 The Fe-In phase diagram shows a wide range of compositions where the liquids are immiscible.4,5 No intermediate phases are present in this system. No precise information is available about the extent of liquid immiscibility in the Co-In system. However, it is certain that there is a range of compositions where the liquids are immiscible and that there are two or three intermediate phases,376 in the system. Liquid immiscibility is also strongly indicated in the Cr-In system and no evidence was obtained in the brief investigation to indicate the presence of intermediate Cr-In phases.2 The present paper deals with a theoretical analysis of binary alloys of indium with certain elements of the periodic table and indicates the systems where liquid immiscibility may be expected. The incidence of liquid immiscibility in binary systems has been theoretically examined by many workers and many excellent papers are available on the subject. In this paper, the alloy systems are examined on the basis of the more recent ideas proposed by Mott.7,8 It has been claimed8 that the Mott parameter predicts the incidence of miscibility or otherwise with reasonable accuracy and consistency. BACKGROUND TO MOTT&apos;S APPROACH Hildebrand applied his immiscibility rule for non-polar liquids to various alloy systems.9 The basis of this rule is that the equation for the excess free energy of formation of a liquid solution is rather similar to the theoretical expression for the energy of mixing of a regular solution. Hence, Eqs. In Eq. [4], the numerator was called the Hildebrand term, the denominator, the electronegativity term, and their ratio, the Mott number. Mott observed that if the Mott number of a given binary system was greater than the maximum number of Pauling bonds which the two metals could form, then liquid immiscibility could be expected. The maximum number of bonds formed by a given metal was considered to be directly related to the number of bonding electrons available, i.e., to its maximum valency. Since the valencies of the elements considered vary from 1 to 6, Mott assumed that if the ratio of the Hildebrand term to the electronegativity term was >6, then immiscibility could be expected. On the contrary, if the ratio is <1, the metals should be miscible. Further, the alloying behavior is not only influenced by the valencies of the two elements but also by the relative atomic sizes that influence the types of packing and hence the coordination number. Mott considers that on average the maximum number of near neighbors of unlike atoms is 6. Thus, on both valency and size factor considerations, Mott concludes that the maximum number of bonds&apos; possible in any system was 6, this being the upper limit of the Mott number for miscibility. "Mining is an energy and water intensive activity. Increasing energy efficiency and reducing water consumption are two of the key requirements in moving toward a more sustainable mining industry. Water reduction, reuse and recycle options are reviewed, identifying cases where these options have been implemented. Then a novel mine water network design method is described, which analyzes a mine/mill water system in order to identify areas where water requirements and water system energy requirements can be reduced. First, a site water balance is determined and major water consumers and sources are specified. Next, multiple possible combinations of supplying water to mine and mill consumers are compared. Finally, low energy and water combinations are identified.INTRODUCTIONMining consumes vast quantities of energy: The whole mining and metals sector consumes over 12% of the world’s energy (DOE, 2009). Mining also requires large quantities of water, although mining water consumption is a relatively small portion of the overall world water use. Even in relatively dry, mining-intensive countries like Australia and South Africa, mine water consumption is only 2-3% of national water demand (Brown, 2003). However, at the local level, when mining takes place in areas where water is scarce, mine water consumption can severely impact local supplies. In addition, acid rock drainage, leaks from waste impoundments, or direct disposal of tailing into waterways can contaminate surface and groundwater (MMSD, 2002). Mine water systems can be large energy consumers, but better mine water systems can reduce both water and energy consumption. Improving water system design and practice are key strategic requirements in moving toward a more sustainable mining industry.This paper addresses conventional base-metal or precious-metal mine sites, which consist of an underground or open pit mine and a mineral processing plant, or mill. Ore is extracted and processed through the plant to produce a saleable product. Tailing, or waste material, is then deposited in a tailing storage facility (TSF). Any rock removed from the mine with no economic value, or waste rock, is stored without being processed."
