All mining and quarrying operations that employ blasting to fragment and move broken ground have a price to pay for æby-productsÆ such as vibration and noise. These æby-productsÆ cannot be eliminated but they can be controlled and modern blasting techniques have improved to the point that excessive environmental restrictions can be adhered to whilst maintaining acceptable production rates and quality. Accurate measurement is the key to control, and as the environmental limits are becoming tighter, the proper way to measure vibrations from blasting operations becomes an integral part of the mining or quarrying operations. The basic vibration monitoring system consists of a primary sensor connected to a data logger and computer software for the analysis of the signal received and recorded. Currently, as with all fields of measurement, much improvement has occurred over the past decade, and electronic devices are much more accurate and reliable. Data analysis has also improved considerably with the computing power that is available to field operatives today. Mounting the primary sensor has been often overlooked in supposed æstandardsÆ with procedures such as double sided tape, resting on a flat surface provided the vibration level is less than a given amount. But if it is worth going to the expense of the monitoring equipment and manpower, surely it is worth a little extra effort to ensure the primary sensor is coupled to the ground effectively. The primary sensor must move with the ground and measure this movement; so if the primary sensor is allowed to move without respect to the ground (ie poor coupling to the ground) then a false record of the physical event will be measured. This scenario can easily be a practical reality if the primary sensor coupling method to the ground is not effective. In this study a number of mounting methods were fabricated and connected to similar data monitors and a series of ænormalÆ production blasts were used as the vibration source. These mounting devices were measured against an in-house procedure (the æstandardÆ) and the relative merits compared. A laboratory investigation was also carried out to look at the physical parameters of the æsoil and their effect on vibration attenuation of the in-house standard method.

Tungsten alloys with high-temperature strength properties, comparable to the best of alloys recently developed by others, were produced by a new process called here the oxyreaction process. The process involved additions of a powder of a reactive metal compound, ZrN, ZrW2, or HfW2, to a base metal powder, tungsten, which contained some oxygen. The powders were blended, compacted, sintered, and extruded. During sintering, diffusion and internal oxidation occurred to produce reactive-metal oxide particles and solid solutions. A dispersion of oxide particles could be precipitated by heat treating. The oxyreaction process circumvents many of the agglomerating and coarsening problems encountered in the current methods for dispersing a stable oxide in a metal. Oxyreaction strengthening results from solid-solution strengthening and from dispersion strengthening produced by the reactive metal and its oxides. At a test temperature of 1,650° C, the alloys prepared from WW, had tensile strengths up to 70,000 psi and stress-rupture lives up to 142 hr at 10,000 psi stress; the alloys prepared from ZrN powders had tensile strengths up to 80,000 psi and stress-rupture lives up to 27 hr at 10,000 psi stress. Tensile strengthening in the alloys was attributed to Zr in solid solution or to Zr-O-W structures too small to be observed in an electron microscope replica. Stress-rupture life was attributed to a dispersion of submicron Zr02 particles which precipitated and grew to 0.05-to 0.2-micron size during the test. Tensile strengthening and stress-rupture life were dependent upon both the zirconium and oxygen contents with the maximum occurring at roughly 0.9 atomic pot Zr and 0.9 atomic pot 0. Studies of the details of the oxyreaction process were made on the W-ZrW2 alloys and three general steps were determined: (1) The reaction of 0 in tungsten powder with ZrW2 to form relatively large Zr02 particles; (2) the dissolution of remaining ZrW2 into the W matrix and partial internal oxidation to form ultrafine but sparse zirconium oxide particles and possibly to establish Zr-O-W structures; (3) the development of ultrafine Zr02 particles during high-temperature aging.

The Century zinc-lead-silver deposit has a geological resource of 118 million tonnes averaging 10.2% zinc, 1.5% lead and 36 g/t silver. It lies approximately 250 krn NNW of Mt Isa in NW Queensland, Australia, and is hosted by middle Proterozoic age siltstones and shales of the Lawn Hill Formation. Within the orebody, most mineralisation occurs selectively within black shale units as fine grained sphalerite and galena lamellae with minor pyrite and siderite. The black shale units are separated by weakly mineralised sideritic siltstone horizons. The deposit is unmetamorphosed and only weakly deformed, displaying excellent lateral stratigraphic and grade continuity. The deposit is mostly overlain by younger Proterozoic sediments and later Cambrian age limestone cover and only a small proportion of the mineralisation crops out. Mineralisation has a subtle surface expression without a classic gossan profile, probably due to the low iron sulphide content of the ore. These factors contributed materially to the length of time between the first recognition of lead-zinc-silver mineralisation in the area by prospectors in the 1880s, to the discovery of the orebody by CRA Exploration Pty Ltd (CRAE) in April 1990.   Small scale prospecting and mining continued in the area from the date of the first mining lease in 1887. Post 1950, the deposit area was also included within nine separate regional exploration titles prior to CRAE's title acquisition in 1987. CRAE's original exploration strategy was partly pragmatically and partly conceptually inspired, but the eventual discovery only partly conformed to the original conceptual model. The deposit was found higher in the stratigraphy than the original target position, with unexpectedly low total sulphide content relative to other known deposits.   The discovery soil anomaly was located by the CRAE's first regional orientation traverse line in the area, but was not drill tested for three years. The discovery sequence at Century has strong elements of persistence, technical competence and some luck. It demonstrates that even in well explored terrains (by conventional standards) the exploration story can never be said to be over. The foreshadowed development of an economic resource at Century will hopefully inspire continued commitment to 'brownfields' exploration by mining companies, and demonstrate to external regulators the importance of genuine multiple land use strategies and the need for continued access to land for exploration and mining purposes.

TOF-SIMS was used to detect, identify from parent molecular ions and determine the relative concentrations of collectors sorbed on the surface of mineral particles in concentrate and tailings samples from three Canadian concentrators. In the Kidd Creek Zn circuit, sphalerite lost to tailings carried on average a quarter of the amount of isobutyl xanthate present on that recovered to Zn concentrate; amyl xanthate, which is not reported as added to the circuit, was also detected on floated sphalerite and pyrite. At Brunswick, sphalerite particles lost to the scavenger tailings had ten times less amyl xanthate and isobutyl xanthate than those recovered to the Zn final concentrate, while both xanthates were detected on sphalerite floated to the Cu-Pb cleaner circuit. At Matagami, significantly more isopropyl xanthate and isopropyl dithiophosphate were detected on sphalerite recovered to the final Zn concentrate than on that lost to the Zn rougher tailings

his paper describes a study of an altered mining extraction and the resulting Rockmass response at VALE?s Creighton Mine. Typically, the deep mining zones have strict stope extraction guidelines to ensure safety and productivity; however, these guidelines offer low flexibility or few options for stope sequencing. The 402 O. B. being in a good rock mass, at moderate depth and stress regime at Creighton, offered an opportunity to drive a more flexible mining sequence with stopes and a pillar. A three-phased approach was used to mitigate risk of the mining plan: 1- Numerical modelling to fully anticipate rock mass response to the proposed mining sequences. 2- In situ seismic monitoring to collect stress and seismic activity data. 3- Analysis of the in situ data to correlate to the modelling results. The creation and the extraction of a pillar in the 402 O. B. was successfully completed. The recorded seismic activity agrees well with the numerical modelling since most of the seismic activity is localised in the hangingwall where the deviatoric stress corresponds to an early damage process. The moderate levels of deviatoric stress cause localised failure with low level of seismic activity.

One of the major activities of the Bureau of Mines is the promotion of safety in mining and other industries, In this connection, the Bureau determines the explosion hazards' of combustible gases, vapors, and solids and investigates means of controlling and preventing explosions. Many dangers are likely to confront men who must enter a building immediately after it has been damaged. Rescue workers must watch constantly for common gases and vapors that may be present in dangerous concentrations in and about demolished, buildings. Fuel gas is the most common source of danger, although refrigerants, gases from furnaces, flues, fires, sewers, and industrial processes, and gas from bomb, explosions in confined places also constitute definite hazards. To rescuers and trapped casualties, these gases offer the hazards of (1) explosion, (2) toxic effects, including asphyxiation and death, and (3) displacement of air so that the oxygen content of the atmosphere is reduced to or below the danger level.

The field of industrial minerals is concerned with both sieve size and distribution of sub-sieve particles. A great deal of work has been reported on the techniques designed to provide information of this work. The term sub-sieve is here considered to include particular material that will pass a 325-mesh testing sieve. Plant men require rapid, precise and simple testing techniques that are, if possible, inexpensive with respect to equipment and manpower. A number of particle-size procedures have been developed, based on the Stokes equation for streamline movement of a particle of diam D, moving at velocity V through a liquid of viscosity n. 1 Particles are considered to be rigid, smooth spheres, completely dispersed at low concentration and moving at low velocity through the suspending medium with no slippage between particle and liquid. In particle size determinations the particle moves either from natural gravitational forces or those provided by centrifugal means. The diagram of Fig. 1 shows a spherical particle of density S and diam D moving downward at velocity L/T (or V) through a liquid of density So and viscosity n. In this paper, the authors give a brief overview of the current practice guidelines and tools for the seismic design of sheet pile quay walls, emphasizing how the design guidelines are lacking when the existing structure performance evaluation is required to meet performance-based criteria. Relying on recent experience they explain how the existing practices can be amended to focus more on performance evaluation as opposed to design. An example is given of an old sheet pile quay wall analyzed and evaluated for its performance according the recent performance criteria devised for Californian Marine Oil Terminals.

Simulation tools are preferred for evaluating complex systems due to its ability to mimic reality and quickly evaluate many different what-if scenarios and find global solutions. A simulation model is capable of representing variable and dynamic disturbances that are typically encountered in day-to-day operations; this is where spreadsheet models or linear programs fall short because they cannot account for the dynamic behavior and relationships. The simulation model used for this work was developed by Xstrata-Nickel (previously Falconbridge). The simulation tool is very flexible and can be used to simulate different mining and development methods. The scope of the modeling included production mining, geology, equipment fleets, equipment maintenance and random failures, manpower, shift schedules, and cycle activity times. A case overview of the 170 Orebody will be presented along with the challenges associated with data collection for the model inputs. Results and lessons learned will also be discussed.

The ordinary Portland cement (OPC) is the key pozzalonic component of the concrete mix, widely used as the construction material world-wide. Billions of tons of OPC are used in the construction industry each year. However, calcinations of limestone and silica that produce OPC also produce almost an equal amount of CO2 during the cement manufacturing process. Thus, OPC production accounts for nearly 7% of all anthropogenic CO2 emission each year. The main objective of this study was to develop a geopolymer-based composite to be used as a substitute for OPC in concrete application to significantly lower the carbon foot print of the construction industry. A waste material produced during the coal combustion process was used as the main raw material for the geopolymer-based composite. It was mostly the non-metallic content of the F-type fly ash produced from the combustion of bituminous coal. The authors envisioned to extract some of the valuable metal oxides from fly ash prior to using the major non-metallic portion of the fly ash for geopolymer concrete application. The results obtained from this study exhibited that the compressive strength of the geopolymer concrete compares favorably with that of the conventional concrete prepared using the OPC.

A production drill rig at a site in Sweden was equipped with a monitoring system to estimate production statistics. Drill running times, drill hole depths, penetration rate, rotation speed, thrust, air percussive pressure and torque pressure were recorded for every 10 mm of hole length for a period of 5 months. Operational activities (rock penetration, tube handling, moving and set-up time) accounted for almost 62% of the time consumed, the remaining 38% being different types of stoppage. Drilling itself, as opposed to handling, took less than 24% of the total time. The results give an indication of how the overall drilling capacity can be increased and which activity should be emphasised. The impacts of automation, new developments and reorganisation on production can also be predicted. Average production was found to be around 100 m/day, but varied between 50 and 160 m/d. The company's specification for the drill rig, before purchase, was that an average production rate of 130 m/d be attained over two consecutive months of drilling - a rate which monitoring shows will not be achieved

The operating principle of the classifying cyclone has been described often but some special aspects of the cyclone receive further clarification here. In addition, several uses of the classifiers are summarized and made clear by means of practical examples. In coal and ore washeries, the washing cyclone is widely used for the separation by specific gravity of sizes up to about 12 mm. This application has lately been extended to the separation by specific gravity of particles up to about 50 mm. This use makes special demands on the construction and wear resistance of the cyclone. The sieve bend, a development of the Dutch State Mines which is less well known than the hydrocy-clone, is dealt with at some length. The sieve bend is an apparatus designed for wet screening. Attention is given to the variables influencing the performance of the sieve bend. Hydrocyclones are now so widely applied that it would be difficult to find an industry not, directly or indirectly, using them or knowing how to use them since publications on this subject abound.1-3,5,9-11,13-15 However, because of the large number of variables influencing the operation of classifying cyclones, it is not entirely possible to calculate the results of this type of cyclone. Therefore, a number of lesser known variables will be discussed here along with some special applications of the classifying cyclone. FACTORS INFLUENCING CYCLONE CLASSIFICATION Shape of Particles: The shape of particles may cause a much coarser classification than the one expected, considering the sieve analysis and the cyclone dimensions chosen. This was clearly shown by feeding a mixture of spheres and disks in water into a cyclone. The spheres were 0.36 mm diam and the disks, 3 mm diam and 0.03 mm thick. These dimensions were chosen in order that the disks and spheres might have the same rates of fall under gravity. Both spheres and disks had a specific gravity of 1.05. Design of an open pit backfill requires an understanding of highly varied processes including slope stability, hydrogeology, pit lake chemistry, climate, runoff, and mine waste behavior. Dynamic systems modeling (DSM) provides flexibility to the designers of open pit backfill, allowing them to directly integrate many different physical processes and varying levels of complexity. DSM also provides for the efficient application of uncertainty analysis to define a range of possible results, the sensitivity of the results to uncertainties in model inputs, and the value of additional data. This paper presents the results of an analysis using DSM to evaluate a pit backfill design at an Arizona mine. The objective of the partial backfill was to stabilize an active slope that threatened facilities adjacent to the pit. DSM was used, in part, to develop a pit lake water balance model for evaluating the influence of the backfill on the ability of the pit to maintain passive hydraulic containment of groundwater and surface water inflows and for evaluating costs for various backfill scenarios.

Work undertaken in the field of cut-off grade optimization has not advanced much beyond the work undertaken by Lane in 1988. His definitive work is based on the calculus of the Net Present Value criterion which is the most widely understood, consistent, and appropriate method by which sequential cash flows arising from the extraction of mineral reserves from an exhaustible resource can be represented. Although the mathematics is not complex Lane’s method is not a widely appreciated or applied approach to maximizing the value of a mining operation through selection and balancing of operational cut-off grades. Three stages in a mining operation namely, mining, processing and marketing were defined by Lane and the economics of each stage are identified and isolated to provide an optimum cut-off for each stage. Points of intersection along the present value curves for each stage of a mining operation are used to identify balancing cut-off grades at points where the capacity of the mining, processing and marketing stages is fully utilized and the Net Present Value of the operation is optimized. Data that simulate a small, deep-level Witwatersrand-type gold mine with an average grade of 6 g/t Au and a logrithmic variance of 1.2,are applied to the model to illustrate the benefits of representing cut-off grades in terms of present value curves for different segments of a mining operation. "Abstract - Detailed mapping of the Eastern Gabbro, Coldwell Complex, Ontario, revealed that the copper and platinum-group-element deposit on the Marathon property is confined to a coarsegrained to pegmatitic gabbro-diorite intrusion, the Two Duck Lake intrusion (TDLI). Exposed along the eastern boundary of the Coldwell Complex, the TDLI was emplaced as a sill whose orientation is slightly oblique to the general structure of the Eastern Gabbro. The TDLI has been subdivided into lower, middle and upper sub-units on the bases of lithological, textural, mineralogical, and geochemical criteria. Both border sub-units are sulfide-, base- and precious metal-enriched, and exhibit abundant evidence of host-rock assimilation. The primary mineral assemblage in the TDLI is plagioclase, olivine, clinopyroxene, Fe-Ti oxides, with accessory orthopyroxene, biotite, apatite; this primary mineral assemblage is essentially preserved in the core of the intrusion (i.e., the middle subunit). The Cu-PGE Marathon deposit, delineated mainly in the upper sub-unit of the intrusion, consists of disseminated Fe-Cu-Ni sulfides, and platinum-group-minerals derived by hydrothermal remobilization from primary magmatic sulfides. Enrichment in Cu and PGE resulted from partial replacement of original Fe-Ti oxides and pyrrhotite in the primary mineral assemblage by reaction with (a) residual magmatic fluid, and (b) fluids derived from the breakdown of host rock xenoliths and hydrothermal alteration along the lower contact of the TDLI. Résumé - La cartographie détaillée de l’Eastern Gabbro, Complexe Coldwell, en Ontario, révèle que le gisement de cuivre et éléments du groupe du platine de Marathon est confiné à une intrusion gabbro-dioritique, de grain grossier à pegmatitique, l’intrusion Two Duck Lake (TDLI). Cette intrusion s’est mise en place sous la forme d’un filon-couche légèrement discordant sur la structure de la bordure orientale de l’Eastern Gabbro. On y distingue trois sous-unités, inférieure, centrale et supérieure, sur la base de zonations lithologique, minéralogique et géochimique. Les sous-unités marginales sont enrichies en sulfures, métaux usuels et précieux, et montrent de nombreux indices d’assimilation des roches hôtes. La paragenèse minérale primaire inclut le plagioclase, l’olivine, le clinopyroxène, les oxydes ferro-titanés et accessoirement et localement, l’orthopyroxène, la biotite et l’apatite : cet assemblage est surtout préservé au coeur de l’intrusion (sous-unité centrale). Le gisement de Cu-EGP de Marathon, situé principalement dans la sous-unité supérieure, comprend une minéralisation disséminées à sulfures de fer, cuivre, nickel, et minéraux du groupe du platine, dérivés de sulfures magmatiques primaires par remobilisation hydrothermale. L’enrichissement en Cu et EGP résulte du remplacement d’oxydes ferro-titanés primaires par réaction avec des fluides tardi-magmatiques, et des fluides assimilés le long de la bordure inférieure de l’intrusion, dérivés de la fusion partielle des xénolites et de remobilisations hydrothermales."

In the United States the performance characteristics of permissible explosives are controlled by routine tests, which include firing the explosive into a gallery filled with a methane-air mixture. These tests are made by the staff-of the Explosives Division of the Bureau of Mines and are similar, in general, to those employed in other countries. This control has helped to reduce the frequency of accidents involving the ignition of firedamp by explosives but has not clarified the basic causes of the ignition. To advance this control and to minimize potential hazards further, this fundamental knowledge is needed. Some of the results of recent research on the causes of the ignition are described herein. NATURE OF THE PROBLEM When an explosive ignites firedamp in the gallery tests, the source of the ignition must be one or more of the emissions from the steel borehole. It has been accepted generally that these emissions are (1) particles, (2) the shock wave, and (3) hot gases and flames. Photographs show that the shock wave emerges from the borehole first, followed closely by hot gases. At first the velocities of these are high and approximately equal, but the velocity of the gases decreases more rapidly than that of the shock wave, and by the time the reactions causing the flame are complete the shock wave travels in an otherwise undisturbed medium. The particles are originally enveloped in the hot gases but some soon begin to break through and eventually out-distance the shock wave. The approximate geometry of these emissions about 1 millisecond after the shot is fired is illustrated in figure

In 1990, the United States General Services Administration (GSA) issued a contract for design and construction of a new federal court building in New York City. Mueser Rutledge Consulting Engineers (MRCE) served as Project Geotechnical Engineers. The project site is in the historic government district at Foley Square. It is surrounded by the New York County Courthouse to the west, an existing federal prison building and federal courthouse across Pearl Street to the south and southwest, an office structure to the north, and a residential tower to the east. The interior of the site was crossed by streets which have now been demapped. As with many urban sites, this site was previously occupied by tenement buildings or industrial structures demolished near the turn of the century. Remains of old building foundations were exposed during construction excavation. In addition, buried fuel oil tanks servicing the adjacent courthouse were removed and the usual assortment of urban utilities had to be relocated for the new building foundations. Ground surface elevations vary from about 4.5 to 6 m above the local Mean High Water Datum Plane.
