The gold salting fraud at Busang on the island of Kalimantan, Indonesia was exposed in early 1997 and resulted from the independent drilling, sampling and assaying of PT Freeport Indonesia which reported assays from the South East Zone with negligible concentrations of gold. Since then, a number of legal actions directed at former Bre-X directors, consulting firms and financial or broking institutions are at various stages and are based on numerous allegations surrounding the supposed existence of obvious and numerous warning signs or æred flagsÆ. These include: the absence of references to visible gold in the drill logs; the alluvial nature of the gold grains; the high gravity recoveries; the invalid comparison with Kelian; the absence of outside scrutiny and the lack of external review/audit and surface depletion of gold. The focus on the red flags has been at the expense of the numerous positive indications or ægreen flagsÆ. These include the morphology and chemistry of the gold grains, the gravity testwork, the amalgamation results, the role of external consultants, the results of a review by one of North AmericaÆs leading minerals auditing groups, the behaviour of the gold at surface and the presence of references to visible gold in the drill logs. The flawed nature of the discussion of the technical facts surrounding Busang has prevented a meaningful and informed discussion about what actually happened and has, therefore, prevented the formulation of meaningful remedies for the future.

Magnetic fields have been used for inclusions removal from melt and preparation of materials with gradient compositions. Fundamental in these applications is that the induced magnetic forces on the particles/melt can enhance migration and change the interaction behavior. In the present paper, migration and interaction behavior of electrical-insulating particles in a conductive melt under strong magnetic field are theoretically analyzed. It is found that the migration can be considerably enhanced for micrometer sized particles by applying a strong magnetic field. In addition, two forces are involved in the interaction between two particles: the interparticle magnetic dipole-dipole attractive force due to magnetization and the repulsive force induced by flow of the melt. This theoretical analysis renders a better understanding of recent experimental results. Additionally, a new method by using strong magnetic field can be proposed to control the particle size distribution for the preparation of metal-matrix composites.

"Energy balance modeling has recently been shown to be a competent tool in the estimation of SAG mill discharge rheology. Work performed by van Drunick and Moys (2001) validated the ability of an energybalance filter to estimate the slurry density from an operating SAG mill. The importance of rheological data is highlighted by several authors who show the effects on load behaviour and thus mill performance. Energy balance models were developed to account for the dynamic energies in the mill discharge sump. The models then made it possible to infer the mill discharge density. A sampling campaign was performed and the errors from the sump energy balance were within tolerable limits.Since the initial results were published, it has been decided to further develop the modeling techniques in order to focus on balancing the energies around the entire mill. The critical measurements for the energy balance will be the temperatures of all the streams entering and leaving the mill, including energy losses to the environment. Metso’s OCS© (Optimising Control System) currently controls the 3 SAG mills at Anglogold’s Mponeng Gold Plant (South Africa). The OCS has built-in Kalman filtering tools to effectively handle variances and noise in the models and the mill circuit data respectively. The new models are therefore constructed in the OCS platform, and will be run in parallel with Metso’s current modeling and filtering systems. The work is a collaborative effort between Anglogold, the University of the Witwatersrand and Metso. The benefits of energy modeling, compared to mass modeling, are that energy data are more accurately measurable than mass data. The inferred mill parameters can therefore be improved provided that a competent set of models is produced to process the (accurate) thermal measurements."

South African platinum mines produce the world?s majority of platinum metal that is used in autocatalysts and jewellery. As the platinum market is forecast to grow at healthy rates into the future, the South African producers, Anglo Platinum, Impala, Lonmin and Northam, are planning to expand in the next decade. Furthermore, a number of smaller producers who are accessing other mineral rights are entering the buoyant market. The South African platinum mines have traditionally exploited the Merensky Reef of the Bushveld Igneous Complex (BIC); however, the mining of this reef is reaching depths that require significant vertical shaft systems and costly refrigeration for access to the orebodies at deeper levels. In the past decade all of the producers have begun to mine the less attractive UG2 reef because of its cheaper mining costs. This UG2 reef contains significant quantities of chromite with typically a chrome-to-iron (Cr/Fe) ratio of 1.35. UG2 ores can contain between 10 and 25% Cr2O3dependingupon the reef width and the selected mining method. It is relatively cheap and easy to extract a portion of the chromite from a platinum concentrator tailings stream at a grade of between 40?42% Cr2O3. However, it is only in recent years that some ferrochrome producers have begun to source some of their chromite from the tailings of platinum producers. South Africa is also the world?s largest single producer of ferrochrome and supplies much of the world?s stainless steel producers and thus the growing market for their product. As the traditional sources of high Cr/Fe ratio ores have been depleted at the shallow economic depths and thus have become more expensive sources of chromite, technical developments have improved the ability to use fine chromite economically to make acceptable grades of ferrochrome. Thus UG2 fines are now becoming possible cheap sources of acceptable feed to the ferrochrome industry. The abundance of feedstock for ferrochrome production and the lessening dependence on mined material will impact upon the structure of the ferrochrome business in South Africa. With continued platinum mining from UG2 reefs, South Africa is set to remain highly competitive in the world?s ferrochrome/stainless steel industry.

"The best accepted method for design of autogenous and semi-autogenous mills is to carry out pilot scale test work using a 1.8 m diameter by 0.6 m long pilot scale test mill. The load in such a mill typically contains 250,000-450,000 particles larger than 6 mm, allowing correct representation of more than 90% of the charge. This scale of DEM model is now within the practical range of standard workstations running an efficient DEM code.This paper describes various ways of extracting collision data from the DEM model and translating it into breakage and wear estimates. Account is taken of the different breakage mechanisms (impact and abrasion) and of the specific impact histories of the particles in order to assess the breakage rates for various size fractions in the mills. These impact histories have the potential to be directly related to breakage as they most resemble the single particle breakage tests which are used by the JKMRC to calibrate more traditional population balance models for variations in ore behaviour. However, the specific impact histories also show a background of many low energy collision events within the mill. This Background may constitute what is usually regarded as “abrasion” breakage. As might be expected, high impact events are concentrated in the toe of the charge and near to the mill shell where the forces associated with the load bearing on each particle is more concentrated."

The International Society of Explosives Engineers (ISEE), at its 1995 annual conference, established a Seismograph Standards Working Group to develop performance standards for blast vibration seismographs. This group was transformed into the Blast Vibration and Seismograph Section in 1997 with 5 working committees one of which was the Seismograph Standards Committee. Standards are essential to ensure that vibration records from different seismographs would report the same vibration levels within a stated tolerance. In 2000, the ISEE through the work of the Blast Vibration and Seismograph Section published the “Performance Specifications for Blasting Seismographs.” This document is available on the ISEE web site at www.isee.org/sections/blast.htm.

Several articles have recently been published discussing the conditions necessary for accurate measurements of temperatures in the open-hearth steel furnace. In the course of a study of refractories service conditions in steel furnaces, the present writers have taken temperatures in several open-hearth shops in the Pittsburgh district. The conclusions, as to conditions necessary for accurate measurements of temperature, are somewhat at variance with those of other investigators. The subject is closely connected both with the close control of steel-making and the prevention of overheating of the silica refractories used in roofs and walls. It is becoming more and more important to obtain furnace temperatures of fairly definitely known accuracy. At present, the most useful instrument for such measurements is the disappearing-filament type of optical pyrometer. This method of measurement has formed the basis of most other discussions on the subject and was also used by the writers. Previous Investigations In 1916, Burgess' made perhaps the first systematic series of measurements in steel furnaces. The emissivity figures of 0.40 for liquid steel and of 0.53 to 0.65 for liquid slags had been determined by the Bureau of Standards and were used by Burgess in this work. These correction factors are still being used and are regarded as fairly accurate, so that the tapping and teeming temperatures on metal streams given by Burgess should be very nearly correct. Most of his temperatures of furnace roofs and slag surfaces were taken while flames were present in the furnaces and include a few roof temperatures above 1700' C. (3100' F.).

Etchants containing hexavalent chromium and sulfuric acid are used in a variety of surface-finishing operations. When the resultant spent solutions are discarded, substantial quantities of chromium are lost and pollution prob¬lems are created. To minimize the undesirable environmental effects while improving metal and minerals recycling technology, the Bureau of Mines is con¬ducting research on a method for the economic inplant recycling of these waste etchants. Trivalent chromium, produced when the etchant reacts with a substrate, is oxidized in the anode chamber of a diaphragm cell; other metals, dissolved during the etching operation, are transferred to the catholyte. When waste brass etchants are treated in this manner, all of the trivalent chromium is oxidized and more than 40 percent of the copper and zinc is removed. Similar copper removal and chromium oxidation are achieved with waste printed circuit board etchants and rinse waters from plastic etching operations. The electrical energy needed to regenerate 1 kg sodium dichromate is less than 9 kwhr. Regenerated brass etchants evaluated by two companies equaled or exceeded the performance of fresh etchants.

Nowadays, the pyrometallurgical treatment in copper smelters is the common process for the recycling of metals from the electronic scrap. Furthermore the European Directive on the Waste from Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) and the Directive on the Restriction of Hazardous Substances (RoHS), increase the importance of electronic scrap recycling. Besides these a high amount of plastic and inert components in these materials leads to problems at the processing. An optimisation concerning the internal recovery and the high amount of plastic is necessary to reach the recycling quota of the European directive. The majority of the scrap is treated mechanically in order to separate in a first step plastics from metals, iron from nonferrous metals and harmful substances from valuable materials. But the quality of the different fraction often rather low and further treatment leads to higher costs. Therefore an interaction between mechanical treatment and metallurgical processing should be realised. The Christian Doppler Laboratory for Secondary Metallurgy of Nonferrous Metals at the Institute of Nonferrous Metallurgy at the University of Leoben carried out investigations concerning the optimisation of the metallurgical recycling and the treatment of the input materials especially of printed circuit boards.

This is the final report on Contract H0220049 covering the period from 27 April 1972 to 30 April 1974. The objective of the contract was to develop and evaluate materials and methods to achieve post explosion identification of explosives reliably and economically through the use of phosphor coded grains incorporated into the explosive during its manufacture. A coding system of two spotting phosphors and seven coding phosphors was successfully developed during the execution of the contract. The ability of the coded grains to survive detonation in many different types of explosives was demonstrated and the complete code was extracted from a single 100 micron post-explosion fragment. A method was established for testing grain strength to correlate with field test results and an optical system was designed for extracting the code from the grains. Also in fulfillment of the contract requirements a laboratory method for manufacturing the coded grains was established and ten one-pound samples, each with a different code, were fabricated. Finally, a method was developed for applying a coating of polyethylene to the grains to prevent sensitization of the tagged explosives and the ten one-pound samples were coated and delivered to the Bureau of Mines.

concentrations) and physical nature of receiving streams, which in turn affects the stream ecosystem. Benthic macroinvertebrates are used to illustrate these impacts, and to investigate natural recovery in affected streams. In Charming Creek, a severely impacted stream in the Buller District, the macroinvertebrate community recovers diversity and the proportion of sensitive species (EPT) in the community is more significant with increasing downstream distance from the source of AMD. This is most likely due to dilution of AMD contaminated water by tributaries to the Charming Creek mainstream. Other impacted systems with less dilution from tributaries did not display similar levels of recovery. The effectiveness of remediation products BauxsolÖ and Zeolite was investigated using laboratory trials. Both products mitigated the toxicity of AMD and enhanced the survival of mayflies exposed to AMD contaminated water. Such products may be of use in the New Zealand environment but are likely to be most effective in conjunction with other systems (eg wetlands). Mitigating the impacts of AMD on stream ecosystems needs to include systems to directly address water chemistry issues (low pH, high metal concentrations) as a component of a holistic approach to restoring environmental conditions.

In its role of providing technical assistance to the mining industry, the Bureau of Mines' Tuscaloosa Research Center has conducted research to develop trapped miner location systems which would aid in locating miners trapped by underground mining disasters. Efforts to produce electromagnetic systems for the location of trapped miners underground and to communicate with them were surveyed, from the 1920's to 1981. Theoretical studies of through-the-earth electromagnetic transmissions are described as well as studies of the electrical characteristics of various rocks, minerals, and soil. Several trapped miner location systems are reviewed including the Westinghouse systems, the DEVELCO system, and an automated three-dimensional location system, and the phase difference of arrival technique. Tangential research, relevant to trapped miner location systems is described. A comprehensive bibliography covering all aspects of trapped miner, through-the-earth electromagnetic location and communications systems is appended.

Salient information on reserves, production, and consumption of fuels and energy by State is summarized in this Bureau of Mines publication. Reserve and production data are shown for each of the fossil fuels (coal, crude oil, natural gas liquids, and natural gas) and for uranium. The consumption data of each of the major consuming sectors (household-commercial, industrial, transportation, electric power, and miscellaneous) are broken down by energy source (coal, petroleum, natural gas, hydropower, and nuclear). In addition, total energy consumption in the Nation in 1973 is compared with consumption in 1972 and 1974 (preliminary data).

In the ladle refining process, the ?FeO?-content of the ladle slag is of great importance in the chemistry as well as the energetics of the process. An optimization of the process requires an accurate knowledge of the thermodynamic activities of ?FeO? in the ladle slags. Due to the discrepancies in the existing data, renewed attempts are being made at the Royal Institute of Technology to generate reliable data for binary, ternary and multi component slags containing ?FeO? at steelmaking temperatures. In order to measure the activities of ?FeO? in the slags, a gas equilibration technique was employed in the present work. The slags, kept in Pt-crucibles, were equilibrated with a CO-CO2-Ar gas mixture and quenched after equilibration. The chemical composition of the slag was analyszed. From a knowledge of the thermodynamics of Fe-Pt system, the ?FeO? activities in the slag could be evaluated. The results of the present studies, together with other literature values, were optimized in the slag software, THERMOSLAG® developed in the Royal Institute of Technology, Sweden. The results of the optimization are presented. Model calculations were performed with the KTH slag software, THERMOSLAG®, by using plant data from OVAKO Steel, Hofors, Sweden. It was found that oxygen estimations in the metal from the ?FeO? analyses of slags, obtained by conventional sampling and analysis methods, where less reliable. Estimation of the oxygen levels utilizing the sulphur partition between the slag and the metal were carried out using the THERMOSLAG® software. Reasonable estimations of the oxygen contents in the metal confirmed that this could be a very useful tool for the plant operator. International Training Resources is a company consisting of personnel with extensive law enforcement and military special operations experience, The staff members are qualified to train and certify, assist and advise law enforcement officers and agencies, at any level, in critical incident policy, procedures and tactical resolutions. Successful critical incident resolution is comprised of many elements of professional skills and personnel. (Command staff, negotiators, snipers, tactical teams, uniform patrol, K-9, bomb squad, etc.) Recently, tactical teams have been developing the capability for the use of explosive methods for rapid entry into crisis locations. This document ‘will briefly describe the environment, operational issues and courses of action associated with developing a complete tactical breaching program for utilization by SWAT teams in response to operational conditions in critical incident situations. This topic is being presented to the I.S.E.E. evaluators under “Interesting Blasting Projects” and “Public Relations” categories. Tactical operations differ significantly from traditional industry practices and we appreciate the opportunity to show the industry other professional applications of explosive materials and techniques. Presently, of the few schools from which law enforcement officers can receive training with explosive breaching methods, International Training Resources is the only company currently teaching and certifying officers which has received total endorsement by the California Peace Officer’s Standards and Training Commission (P.O.S.T.) and the state blaster’s licensing commission. We have pioneered the combining of law enforcement needs and blasting industry technology to train tactical officers, nationwide, in the mission essential skills necessary for explosive breaching.

The Washington, DC Water and Sewer Authority (WASA) has implemented facility planning for the Anacostia River Projects portion of a program to bring its Combined Sewer System (CSO) into compliance with federal water quality regulations by 2025. The program includes approximately 19 kilometers (12 miles) of deep CSO storage/conveyance and flood relief soft ground tunnels, construction, vortex drop, overflow, maintenance and air release shafts, as well as near surface diversion structures and conveyances. The Project encompasses major technical and non-technical challenges including completion under a federal consent decree schedule, construction within the confines of heavily developed urban areas, difficult ground conditions, major infrastructure crossings, and close coordination with several major public agencies. This paper discusses the planning stage considerations related to the geotechnical investigation program, discusses obstructions that influenced alignment selection, and provides two examples of preliminary estimates of settlement induced ground movement due to the tunnel and shaft construction.

Michigan is becoming one of the important oil-producing States of the country. The amount of crude oil produced within its boundaries has increased from only 4,000 barrels in 19253/ to nearly 16 million barrels in 19935.4/ The Bureau of Mines method of crude-oil analysis and classification-indicates that the oils from the several producing fields are predominantly paraffin-intermediate-base, wax-bearing crudes. In general, they will yield 25 to 35 percent of highly paraffinic gasoline and about the t- me amount of kerosene and gas-oil combined, 7.2 to 15 percent of lubricating oil stock, and 20 percent of residuum with a carbon residue or about 6 to 7 percent. In addition, there appears to be some correlation between certain properties of the crude oils and both the geographical location and geological structure of the oil-producing areas within the State. These general conclusions are based on the analytical data presented in this report, which is one of a series of papers that record the general characteristics of crude oil from the many producing fields of the United States. This report discusses briefly the oil fields of Michigan and the characteristics of the crude oils produced from them. The analyses of 15 samples are given. Subbituminous coal or lignite when stored in random riles or in ordinary bins in which the temperature fluctuates and air circulates quickly undergoes objectionable physical and chemical changes, which decrease the utilization value of the fuel and increase its tendency to ignite spontaneously. Slacking takes place, and the heating value decreases. Those changes are accelerated by fluctuations of temperature and by circulation of air through the storage space. When such coals are exposed to the weather they lose moisture rapidly. If evaporation from the surface of a lump proceeds at a faster rate than that at which it is replaced by moisture from the interior, the rate of shrinkage at the surface is greater than that at the interior; consequently stresses are generated at the surface which cause the coal to disintegrate. Likewise, when moisture is absorbed by the air-dried surface the outside layers expand at a faster rate than the interior, which results in further break-down. As these cycles are repeated the lump may disintegrate completely. Therefore, successful storage of low-rank coals depends on control of the factors that influence change of moisture.
