This paper presents a cost comparison of the driven pile foundations for two large Wisconsin Department of Transportation (?WisDOT?) projects in Milwaukee, Wisconsin: the Marquette Interchange South Leg, and the Canal Street Viaduct. The projects? geology is fairly similar, but their methods/approaches to pile foundation design and installation differ. Although the Marquette Interchange South Leg had deeper poor soils, its pile design was more-cost-effective than the Canal Street Viaduct?s. Potential reasons for cost differences between the projects are identified, and the effect of the different design and construction approaches on economics is discussed.

This is one of a series of publications by the Bureau of Mines dealing with mining methods and costs at representative operations in the United States. The report describes all phases of the mining methods for the open-pit operation and milling practices employed at the Vermont Asbestos Mines in Lamoille and Orleans counties, Vermont. A brief history of discovery and development of these asbestos deposits is given, and the ore deposits are described. Methods employed in exploration, sampling, and estimation of tonnage and grade are outlined. A breakdown of available cost figures is summarized in the last section. All asbestos ore produced in this area has been won by the use of surface-mining methods. Two quarries, the Lowell and the "C" Area, are in operation. The quarries combined are producing and the mill is processing approximately 3,500 tons of ore per 3-shift day The average 40,000 tons of crysotile asbestos fiber produced at this plant annually accounted for 96 to 98 percent of the total fiber produced in the United States in 1958. The mine is located (fig. 1) approximately 4 miles north of Eden Mills village on the southeastern flank of Belvidere Mountain (fig. 2).

The water situation in Nevada mineral and related industries is described in this report. It contains information on the sources and adequacy of supply to current operators, requirements and uses, quality and costs, geography, hydrography, precipitation and evaporation characteristics, and Nevada water laws. Also, information is given on the water requirements of one public utility powerplant, and the source and consumption of water in four major cities. Water distribution at 24 operations is shown on schematic waterflow diagrams. The mineral industries of Nevada in 1962 used 8.6 billion gallons of new' water and reused 3.8 billion gallons for a total usage of 12.4 billion gallons. The copper industry was the major water user. The 1962 value of all mineral production in Nevada was $85.5 million. The large amount of water required to maintain thin high production is obtained principally from ground-water sources in alluvial valleys and the permeable rock formations of some mountain ranges. Some water is also obtained from perennial streams and springs. Sources of water utilized by existing industry ire near most mineral industry operations; however, seven companies are forced to pipe water distances ranging from 2 to 8 miles. Although water supplies of presently operating companies are adequate at most operations, several companies resort to large-scale reuse of water as a matter of conservation and economics. Acquisition of water by new operators is possible but takes considerable negotiation. Water rights, surface and underground, are controlled by the State. The quality of the water is satisfactory for most purposes. Analyses of 19 samples, listed in the appendix, show the range in water quality at various plants throughout the State. Costs of delivering new water to current operations range from 2 to 26 cents per 1,000 gallons with an average of 10 cents per 1,000 gallons for power and maintenance. No firm costs for recirculating water were available; estimated costs range from 1.5 to 2.5 cents per 1,000 gallons. The mineral-product value of the entire Nevada mineral industry in 1962 was equivalent to $10 per 1,000 gallons of new water and $26 per 1,000 gallons consumed. Projection of the 1962 water requirements of the Nevada mineral industry indicates that the demand For new water will increase from 8.6 billion gallons in 1962 to 11.9 billion gallons in 1980, a 43-percent increase. Water requirements in the year 2000 are estimated as 14.8 billion gallons, an increase over 1962 water demand of 78-percent.

The Conveyor Equipment Manufacturers Association (CEMA) specification B105.1 “Welded Steel Conveyor Pulleys” adequately defines standard pulleys for most aggregate material handling applications. However, many aggregate applications demand pulleys of higher capacity and reliability than that offered by CEMA pulleys. This paper examines the CEMA Pulley Standard and pulley specifications for aggregate applications requiring greater capacity and reliability than the CEMA Pulley Standard. Higher reliability increases the uptime and has a lower total cost of ownership.

"Hearing loss due to excessive noise exposure is the most prevalent industrial disease. It is ranked on the World Health Organization’s (WHO) priority list for major work related injuries. Uncontrolled noise not only has a physical effect, but is also a psychological hazard affecting the performance and well being of man. Noise induced hearing loss (NIHL) is irreversible, yet it is preventable. The first defence against noise (noise control engineering) is a high priority in the mining industry. Second defences should be a last resort when the engineering control of noise is inadequate. Hearing conservation programs and the use of conventional hearing protection devices seem to have failed in the prevention of noise induced hearing loss. If compensation payouts that quadrupled in the past ten years are used as a barometer for the success of existing hearing conservation programs, then new strategies and technologies need to be investigated. The best practice Hearing Protection Device (HPD) may be seen as the minimum standard for second defence noise control.Conventional hearing protection is widely applied, but also misused in the industry as well as in the mining sector. Empirical research results, ownership, general attitudes of workers as well as qualitative aspects will be explored. The paper provides reasons, evidence, case studies and strategies regarding the best practice hearing protection philosophy (the Noise Clipper Model) as implemented in the Implats Mining Group. Worldwide tendencies towards custom-made HPD’s, findings that indicate improvements in hearing conservation programs and finally the successful application of Custom-made Hearing Protection Devices, will be outlined."

The modelling of lithological domains is a critical step in mineral resource and reserve evaluation. Deterministic models rely on an interpretation of the available drill hole data and expert knowledge, but do not account for the uncertainty in the spatial extent of the lithological domains. Instead, probabilistic models based on conditional simulation can be used to map the probabilities of occurrence of the domains within the deposit, which reflect the uncertainty in their presence or absence at unsampled locations. The mineral grade model is then obtained by weighting the predicted grades associated with each lithological domain by the probability of occurrence of this domain. Such an approach accounts for the continuity of the grades proper to each lithological domain and for the uncertainty in the spatial extent of these domains within the deposit. Appropriate seals, portal ground improvement, and compatible shaft construction techniques are vital elements for launching and receiving tunnels effectively in urban areas where adjacent property requires protection from excess ground movements. This paper focuses on seals and ground improvement along with shaft wall types, required to launch or receive tunnel boring machines within wet, permeable ground at the portal zone. The paper also discusses probing to verify suitability before the tunnel eye is cut. Methods addressed include: rubber gasket seals; soft eyes; double walls; top hats for reception; and, portal zone ground improvement (permeation grouting, jet grouting, un-reinforced slurry diaphragm wall panels, ground freezing, deep soil mixing, dewatering, and over-excavation and backfilling). This paper focuses on challenges with launch and reception of pressurized-face TBMs with precast concrete segment linings. Challenges related to pipe jacking are discussed in a separate paper titled ?Mitigating Microtunnel Launch and Reception Challenges? (Hunt and Finney 2008).

The paper presents problems resulting from the mobile mining machines functioning and requirements concerning a machine control system, which controls successive operation stages of such machines. The problem is presenting on the example of a mobile hydraulic support to remove residual pillars in copper ore mines. The paper describes an algorithm and a flow chart to be followed when designing a supports control system. Design of control systems to ensure machine function under given circumstances is also presented.

The delay times canbe chosen with an accuracy of 1 millisecond over the entire time range (1 to 6250 ms). Since ordinary.high explosives have detonation velocities of up to 6000 metres/second, these high velocities make accurate and flexible delay times very interesting."

ECONOMIC recovery, which began in 1958, carried through into 1959 but was somewhat retarded by the 116-day steel strike beginning in July 1959. Recovery and economic growth increased production and consumption of mineral fuels 3 percent above 1958. The increase was accomplished despite a drop of 26 percent in coal exports. Prices remained constant during the year so that the value of production and consumption also increased 3 percent over 1958. Stocks in the hands of producers at yearend were little changed from the supply at the beginning of the year. Employment in the field of mineral fuels decreased 6.4 percent from 1958. Average hourly earnings were up 7 percent, and average hours worked were up 5 percent, with the result that weekly earnings gained 11.8 percent. Internal freight rates were relatively constant, but ocean tanker rates declined both in 1958 and 1959 from the high rates charged during the Suez crisis. The index of major input expenses decreased for anthracite, held constant for bituminous coal, and increased for petroleum. The index of labor cost per dollar of product and per ton of product declined again in 1959 to a new low in anthracite and bituminous-coal mining industries.

There is significant value at stake in the mining industry from the implementation of new technologies that support the enhanced profitability and sustainability of mines. However, in order to realise this value, new technology must be implemented in a way that is both effective and sustainable. The industry has a mixed history for technology implementation that provides fertile ground for understanding what is necessary for innovation to deliver value. This paper describes early stage research investigating why this is so, with the aim of improving how to deliver value. Several case studies are provided covering both successful and unsuccessful technology interventions. A 10-channel automatic data acquisition system has been designed and environmentally packaged for use with underground strain-gage applications and associated instruments. The system uses commercially available components and is assembled in two plastic enclosures. Environmental control is provided through a specially designed (compressed-air) air-conditioning system and water-resistant cabling. Accuracies of 0.01 pct and resolution of 1 µV have been obtained in underground tests.

This paper concentrates on ground control innovation in Europe since the first Morgantown conference, mainly from a UK perspective. In particular, it describes the rock engineering and ground control tools developed to address the mine support and design problems associated with coal mining at great depth in areas influenced by previous workings. The differences in approach across the Western European industries are also examined. Perhaps the most significant change in the period has been in the science of coal mine rock mechanics itself, with support design now based firmly on measurement, analysis and understanding. The ground control innovations described here have played their part in increasing the efficiency with which coal is mined and in increasing safety to the extent that fall of ground accidents are now rare.

One of the basic processes of process engineering is the production of dense suspensions. The major two equipment of this task are the periodically operating propeller mixer, and the continuously operating mixer tank based on the flow principle. In the laboratory of the Department of Process Engineering at the University of Miskolc, laboratory scale experimental setups had been built of both types of mixers in the frame of the FKFP 0504/1999 signed research project, supported by the Hungarian Ministry of Education. By these experimental setups many systematical experimental series had been carried out by test materials of water as the dispersing media and sand, power plant fly ash and magnetite as the granular solids. On the basis of the literature and these experimental investigations, scale-up methods had been developed for both types of mixers for the determination of the main technical parameters of industrial size equipment.

Construction of drilled shaft foundations with the use of hydraulic oscillators and rotators to install temporary casing over the full depth of the shaft is described. The equipment and techniques were developed in the 1960?s in Germany and full-depth casing is now the predominant method of construction in Europe. Its use in North America is increasing. This paper presents an overview of full-depth casing methods and a summary of available load test data evaluated by the authors to compare the load transfer and capacity performance of shafts installed by various construction methods. Results demonstrate that load transfer and capacity of full-depth casing shafts are equal to or exceed that of shafts constructed by dry or slurry methods and that measured capacities are consistent with generally accepted design equations. The principal advantage of full-depth casing methods over other installation techniques is that the risk of defects in the shaft is minimized. Casing is able to penetrate into the ground under any geologic or groundwater condition when this technique is applied. Potential delays and cost overruns can thus be avoided and a safe, economical foundation element is created.

Engineers are frequently faced with the problem of having to predict oil recovery from a solution gas drive reservoir in the early life of a field. This is often the time when actual laboratory or field-derived gas-oil permeability (kg/k0) data are not yet available. Although excellent collections of k0/k0 data for various types of rocks may be found in the literature,1,2,3 a need exists for a more detailed correlation of k0/k0 data with core properties such as porosity, permeability, clay content or pore-size distribution. It is the purpose of this article to present this type of correlation for sandstone material. The correlation is based on laboratory tests performed on over 300 core samples from 19 reservoirs in the United States and Canada. EXPERIMENTAL Cores were analyzed by routine procedures, using samples of conventional size (7/8-in. diameter, 7/8-in long) cut parallel to the bedding planes. Air permeability was measured at 1.67 atm mean pressure in a Hassler-type apparatus. Porosity was determined with the aid of a Ruska bulk volume meter and a Boyle's Law rock volume meter, An evaporation method' was used to evaluate irreducible water saturations. Core samples were saturated with 25,000 ppm NaCl brine. The brine was reduced to the irreducible saturation, and the remainder of the pore space was filled with kerosene. This was followed by multiphase flow tests using the so-called "dispersed feed" technique.5 n this technique, gas and oil (kerosene and kerosene-saturated air) were dispersed with the aid of a porous Alun-durn feed head, the face of which contained a waffle-shaped system of Lucite-lined grooves. Oil entered the back side of the feed head and emerged at the raised areas of the front face. Gas was introduced directly into the system of grooves at the front face. The gas-oil mixture then entered the test core which was kept in capillary contact with the feed head. Permeabilities were determined from rate and pressure measurements and saturations from weights. All determinations were performed at equilibrium or steady-state conditions. Pore-size distributions were determined on selected samples by a mercury injection technique.6 GENERAL CORRELATIVE TRENDS When examining data from a given reservoir, it was noted that k0/k0 vs saturation curves became generally less steep as specific air permeability increased, a development that has a favorable effect on oil displacement efficiency by solution gas drive. This trend has also been reported by others in the literature.' An effect of porosity on k0/k0 data was also noted. This effect was not generally discernible in a study of relative permeability data for a given reservoir but became apparent when data for sandstone reservoirs of similar lithology but differing average porosity were compared. For instance, in a comparison of argillaceous and/or calcareous sandstones from 11 reservoirs ranging in average porosities from 14 to 28 per cent, a definite trend was noted, indicating that for a given permeability k0/k0 curves became less favorable (i.e., steeper) as porosity increased. A similar trend was observed for a group of comparatively clean sandstones from five reservoirs ranging in average porosities from 15 to 21 per cent. For a given permeability and porosity, comparatively clean sandstones gave more favorable k0/k0 curves than argillaceous and/or calcareous sandstone or chert reservoirs. The laboratory studies also showed that least favorable k0/k0 curves were exhibited by shaly sandstone, conglomerate, and sandstone containing carbon inclusions. "Industrial use of abrasive stress takes place in the area of fine grinding and in order to clean surface contaminated soil particles. Also, at many mechanical operations abrasion emerge as an unintended side effect. At the Institute for Raw and Waste Material Processing at the Technical University of Berlin systematic investigations are carried out, to further the knowledge regarding the dependence of abrasion process on material properties and stress mechanisms as a basis for design and optimisation of the process or for its avoidance. Aim was the mathematical description of the abrasion process running with a single particle stress. For the purpose of investigations an agitation cell was used. Limestone served as material.In the presented work the influence of particle diameter, particle shape and collision energy on the mass and particle size distribution of abrasion debris was studied. The surface geometry of the particle was characterised by the particle shape factor ?x and the particle diameter dp. The particle shape factor ?x stays in direct relation with the abrasion degree x, and can be substituted by a mathematical function of x.Physically the particle shape factor ?x can be interpreted as a proportion of abrasive stresses splitting up complete crystals and crystal fragments. These two different mechanisms depend on different ratios of curvature of the surface of the stressed particle. The abrasive stress of strongly curved surface areas leads to separation of complete crystals. The abrasive stress of weakly curved surface areas leads to separation of crystals fragments. Accordingly the mass of wear mAb and median diameter of the abrasion debris d50 are different. The derived mathematical relations consider this behaviour by the particle shape factor ?x , which represents the ratio of the mixture of both stress mechanisms. The dependence of the particle shape factor ?x on the abrasion degree x with an exponent approximately to 2/3 points out that the particle shape factor ?x represents a surface area relation."

The Northwest Experiment Station of the Bureau of :,!in-s, in cooperation with the College of Mines, University of Washington, has completed a detailed investigation-of the physical and chemical properties of western cokes made or used in the Pacific Northwest, as evaluated by standard methods./ One of the properties determined, to which more or less importance has been attached, was reactivity5/ or combustibility. As no standardized procedure is available, it was necessary to develop a workable method for evaluating this property. The combustibility of coke is usually measured by the formation of carbon dioxide with time at a particular temperature or by the reduction of carbon dioxide to carbon monoxide. Analysis of the resulting gases commonly is required to evaluate the result. The method described in this paper is simple and direct in that the sample of coke or other carbonaceous material is weighed as it burns; the loss in weight and time is indicated by a balance and clock arrangement. Gas analyses are not required. Methods similar in principle have been used by Tu, Davis, and Hottel6/ and by Oshima and Fukuda7/ for determining the combustion rate of carbon and for studying the effect of ash on combustion characteristics.
