"This paper describes some of the methods and equipment used for fine milling of minerals, and gives particular attention to the Vibro Energy system.In addition, the paper describes a specific application in the gold mining industry. This is the 200 tpd plant built by Anglo American Corporation at the President Brand Mine in South Africa in 1985, now a division of Freegold. This plant treats a gold bearing pyrite flotation concentrate which is finely ground to 15 microns prior to cyanidation and carbon-in-pulp (CIP). l .0 INTRODUCTIONFree milling gold ores are those that yield acceptable dissolution and recovery of the gold following grinding to what can be described as normal fineness, frequently between 50% and 90% passing 74 microns.Increasingly, gold metallurgists are faced with ores that are refractory. The traditiona1 treatment route for refractory gal d ores and concentrates has been by roasting, but for environmental reasons this is becoming less acceptable, or in some areas of the world, totally unacceptable. New methods of treating refractory gold ores are being developed and applied in practice. These new methods include pressure and biological oxidation. Higher gold liberation can also be attained by increasing the fineness of grind, although with conventional systems there are economic limits to this.In flowsheet development and test programs on new deposits, a standard procedure is to establish the relationship between the grind and subsequent go 1 d extraction. The normal situation is that gold extraction increases as the ore, or concentrate, is ground finer. Typically, this relationship is as shown in Fig. l, where the incremental additional extraction is very small once an optimum, or economic, grind has been achieved. This generally app1ies whether the material is free milling or refractory. The limits to grinding are set by the type of equipment which is commonly in use, usually ball mills. These mills have the obvious advantage of high capacity, however, they are increasingly inefficient as finer grinds are required. In general, ball mills are used to reduce ore to some agreed percentage passing 74, or possibly 53 microns."

The Block 37 Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) Tunnel Construction Project was originally designed by STV to connect Blue Line subway in North Dearborn Street and Red Line subway in State Street in the downtown Chicago Area. The project was proposed using tunnel mining techniques combined with steel pipe jacking and fiber glass rebar soil reinforcement. Weidlinger Associates, Inc. (WAI) and Kiewit Construction Company proposed an alternate design using open cut construction technology. WAI designed a complex temporary excavation support system using Soldier Pile Tremie Concrete (SPTC) walls and Soldier Pile Lagging walls supported by cross lot/corner bracing elements. Below the top of the existing tunnel, a top-down construction technique was utilized. A steel temporary traffic decking system at top of the excavation site served as the daily street traffic function as well as the first level of bracing for the support of excavation. The project encountered great challenges of soft clay conditions in downtown Chicago, numerous existing utilities in the excavation site and the requirements of protection for a number of historical buildings nearby as well as the protection of the city streets. The construction was successfully completed at both State Street/Washington Street and Dearborn Street/Randolph Street. The monitoring system showed that ground movement and adjacent building settlement was kept to a minimum during construction.

With improved methods for designing and detonating shots the potential for flyrock can be significantly decreased, but there are few absolutes in blasting; therefore blasters must learn from the mistakes of others. Blasters must conscientiously employ control measures to minimize the risk of flyrock. The worst case incidents which tend to be widely reported by the media, should serve as a reminder to us all that minimizing the risk of flyrock must be incorporated into the design of the drill pattern and blast design.

This report is a general summary of pertinent data on the manufacture and use of synthetic ammonia products. It provides a condensed summary of the potentialities of a synthetic ammonia industry in North Dakota for Federal, State, and private organizations that may be interested in helping to develop an integrates synthetic ammonia and fertilizer industry. The report contains discussions of: (1) Materials used in the manufacture of nitrogenous fertilizers, nitric acid, and urea; (2) National production, imports, exports, and consumption; (3) the ammonia industry, location, capacity of plants; (4) processes used in manufacturing synthetic ammonia, nitric acid, and urea; (5) other potential industries; and (6) analyses of manufaturing and plant cosh;. Additional information on industrial compounds from ammonia and plant nutrients removed by crops is given in Appendixes 1 and 2. Synthetic ammonia is one of the primary ingredients in fertilizers. Resources required in synthetic ammonia manufacture are available in North Dakota. Hydrogen is available from the petroleum and natural gas resources, particularly in the Williston Basin, and from the large lignite resources in the State. Hydrogen can be produced from lignite by a gasification process developed by the Bureau of Mines at Grand Forks, N. Dak.

IN a previous study of hypereutectoid Ti-Ni alloys' a substructure was observed in quenched powder specimens when the constitution was 100 pet retained ß body-centered-cubic phase. The alloy powders were quenched from 1000°C by a blast of helium gas and precautions already described were observed throughout the work, to minimize contamination. Ogden et al.2 have previously observed subboundaries in the ß phase of a Ti-Mn-N alloy; but this structure was attributed to nitrogen-rich a precipitation. The nitrogen content of the Ti-Ni alloys does not exceed 0.02 pet and the quenching rate was sufficiently rapid to suppress precipitation reactions. Since X-ray diffraction results have confirmed the absence of any second phase which might account for this phenomenon, it seems unlikely that this substructure is explicable in terms of nitrogen content. Fig. 1 shows the substructure in adjacent grains of 100 pet ß phase in a quenched 6 atomic pet Ni alloy. Fig. 2 shows adjacent ß grains in a similarly treated alloy; one grain contains marked intracrys-talline boundaries and the other is completely free from any substructure. The suberystals appear to have fairly regular shapes, suggesting a regular orientation relationship among them. Tempering the retained ß structure at temperatures below the eutectoid eliminates the substructure at an early stage of ß decomposition. At the present time it is possible only to guess at an explanation for this subboundary phenomenon, since very little work has been reported on substructures resulting from phase changes. Also combined with the practice of construction deep foundation of Capital Mansion, calculation of the heave of foundation soil after excavation is given. Compared these results from above two methods with the results measured in situ, it is conformal on the whole, and the results by FEM are much closer with the measured.

The Late Archaean of South AustraliaÆs Gawler Craton contains significant potential for gold resources. The main targets of interest are migmatised gold style systems of which the Challenger deposit is the best known example. This deposit is one of the lower cost gold producers in Australia due to the high-grade, low-tonnage nature of the mineralisation. Structurally controlled, metamorphosed deposit styles are also possible throughout the Archaean of the Gawler Craton, including occurrences within reactivated shear zones. More typical, lower metamorphic grade orogenic gold styles are also possible within greenstone host sequences identified in the central and southern parts of the Gawler Craton.

This report describes the development of guidelines for design, inspection and maintenance of automatic couplers. In order to devise the guidelines, performance requirements for automatic couplers were carefully established. This was clone through a comprehensive survey of coupler manufacturers and extensive observation of automatic couplers in service in a broad spectrum of mines. The capability of the couplers to withstand the demands of the mining environment in terms of strength characteristics, gathering range, curve negotiability, and other factors were all carefully evaluated. An analysis of coupler related accidents for the years 1972-1976 was carried out to provide information on the safety and reliability of existing automatic couplers. This formed an important input to the development of the guidelines. It is expected that these guidelines will he useful to coupler manufacturers for establishing designs for improved automatic couplers, and to mine operators for maintaining their couplers in a safe and good operating condition throughout their expected lifetimes. The industrial vision system provides on-line 2D particle size analysis for aggregate slurries in both the overflow and underflow of hydrocyclones. This paper covers required vision system features allowing CCD cameras to function in the harsh environment of a mine milling area. The study conducted demonstrates the system’s capacity to obtain particle size distributions for controlling hydrocyclonic separators. The particle size distribution is obtained within seconds and immediately updated to allow for process adjustments. Results are then provided as a graphical computer generated display or output as a 4-20mA current loop for process control. The primary use of the vision system is in classifying particles in cyclone overflows which are often a few microns in size. Typical size information for actual mine slurry samples are presented and possible control schemes discussed.

Anglo American Platinum's Khomanani 2 shaft changed over from down-dip mining to breast mining in 2004. The changeover was made to ensure that production targets were met, as it was said that predevelopment for down-dip mining was not fast enough to sustain the required ore reserves; nevertheless, production performance did not increase as expected. In this study a trade-off was performed between down-dip mining and breast mining on the Merensky Reef at Khomanani 2 in order to find the most suitable method for mining the Merensky Reef. Data was gathered by means of a literature survey, underground observations, and interviews with personnel as well as data from various departments on the mine. The two mining methods were studied and then evaluated in terms of the following criteria: safety, mining rate, cost and other factors which were identified as the main drivers of the mine. A scaling system was used to rate the performance of the two mining methods. Analysis of the results shows that down-dip mining and breast mining have the same safety performance ratings. Breast mining has a better mining rate performance than down-dip mining. Breast mining was found to be costly in comparison with down-dip mining, which has a good cost performance rating. The overall ratings of the two mining methods are very similar, with down-dip mining achieving a rating of 76 and breast mining 75.5 out of an optimum 102. Khomanani 2 currently practices breast mining, and with such a slight difference in performance rating between the two methods, it will not be worth changing over to down-dip mining as production is likely to be adversely affected during the changeover. Down-dip mining does, however, have potential for improvement in its performance rating. Further studies focusing on the improvement of the mining rate performance for down-dip mining are needed to see if this potential can be realized. If significant improvement can be made in the performance rating for down-dip mining, a changeover to down-dip mining can be reconsidered.

The amount of vertical subsidence occurring over a longwall operation is a function of the thickness of material removed, the quantity and quality of any fill material, the width of the extraction, and the depth. The relationship between these variables is empirically determined, and subsidence can be predicted using only a few easily established constants which are subject to local conditions, such as the angle of draw. Associated with the vertical subsidence are both tensional and compressional horizontal strains. The component of strain in the direction of face advance is temporary, while the component perpendicular to the direction of working is permanently retained by the ground. It is these horizontal strains and the vertical strain (tilt) which result in damage to surface structures. It is possible to ameliorate the consequences of mining subsidence by utilizing the well-proved techniques described in this paper in the underground operations and on the surface. INTRODUCTION In the past, American mining practice in stratified deposits has been mostly restricted to production by the room-and-pillar system where a sizable percentage of the salable product is left in place as pillars. These pillars are usually regularly spaced and provide a permanent support for the roof of the mine and the surface above. The longwall system employs an advancing face which may be as much as several hundred yards long and some sort of breaking and loading machine which moves back and forth along the length of the face. The roof is supported behind the face only to a distance required to provide working space for the production machine. The supports are then withdrawn and the roof is allowed to cave. The longwall system therefore possesses the various advantages of complete extraction, thus effectively increasing reserves, while at the same time eliminating the necessity and cost of installing artificial supports such as roof bolts and heavy steel girders over large areas. The Bureau of Mines measured respirable dust in coal mines by means of multiple dust samplers worn by persons moving about the mines. The measurements were made primarily to evaluate the effectiveness of certain dust-control techniques; however, for this report, the data have been analyzed to determine the precision of the personal dust-sampling measurements. A total of 68 sets of measurements were available from multiple personal samplers. The measured dust masses were less than 1.0 mg because the sampling times were short. The coefficient of variation calculated from these data was 18.5 pct, compared with coefficients of variation ranging from about 10 to 30 pct, which were calculated from the most precise and extensive data available for fixed-point dust measurements made in coal mines. From this comparison, it is concluded that dust samplers worn by personnel are as precise as fixed-point samplers in measuring respirabe coal dust; the wearing of the samplers by someone moving about a mine does not contribute significantly to the variation in measurements made with these instruments.

Several evaluations were made by Modified Rhyme Test (MRT) word lists transmitted through various simulations of the Trapped-Miner Communication System being developed by the U.S. Bureau of Mines. The tests were performed in a "single blind? situation so that the evaluators would not be biased by knowing the characteristics of the system being simulated. A computer program was developed to provide a simulation of the electrical aspects of the communication system and to provide an evaluation by calculation of the articulation index (AI). The study indicates that communication through the presently proposed system will be somewhat unreliable at depths as great as 300 metre even with the system operating at maximum effeciency.

Washington?s King County is constructing a new regional wastewater treatment facility, called Brightwater, in response to growth in the greater Seattle region. Planning conducted in the late 1950s identified the need for two regional treatment facilities. Constructed in the 1960s, these plants have served the region well. However, an eventual need for a third facility was also recognized. The Brightwater project implements the final phases of the long-term plan. The project includes a new treatment plant and an extensive conveyance system. When completed in 2010, the Brightwater facilities will treat sanitary sewer flows from growing populations living in northern King County and southern Snohomish County. The new system will fulfill commitments to provide wastewater services to local jurisdictions and sewer service providers in the King County Service Area. It will also provide more flexibility in the operation of the King County regional wastewater system. The Brightwater wastewater treatment plant will provide secondary treatment capacity using membrane bioractor technology in 2010 for 36 million gallons per day (mgd), with anticipated expansion in 2040 to 54 mgd, using membrane bioreactor technology. These capacities are for average wet-weather flows. The plant will also accommodate peak hourly flows of 130 mgd by 2010 and 170 mgd by 2040. It has been suggested that the issuance of a revision and elaboration of Information Circular 7311, The Hazards of Hydrogen Fluoride Poisoning in the Mineral and Allied Industries, which hay been out of print for some time, would be opportune. Fluorine minerals have been known since the Middle Ages. Fluorine was isolated in 1886 by Moisson (2).

The results presented in this report deal with the elimination of explosion hazards of ether-oxygen mixtures by the addition of helium. The method is based upon the fact that every combustible gas, vapor, or dust will not burn or explode when the oxygen content of the mixture is reduced below certain definite values. These critical oxygen values are usually different for each combustible, varying with the percentage of the combustible present in the mixture and also with the inert gaseous material used to reduce the oxygen content of the mixture.

"In this present paper, the authors introduce the artificial neural networks into the modeling of the industrial flotation process, integrating information technology, control theory and intelligent optimizing method to flotation technology. The new idea gives a new way to solve the difficulty in this field, and therefore brings the study on the automatic control of flotation process in China into a new start.The Radial Basis Function (RBF) network, featuring a quick learning speed, is one of the feedforward neural networks. It has attracted much attention from automatic control recently for its implementing the nonlinearity mapping through adjusting the parameters of the nonlinearity transfer function. One of the online adaptive learning algorithm—the nearest neighbor-clustering algorithm, which can automatically determine the number of hidden units, has been implemented in the MATLAB programming language in this paper, laying the foundation for the flotation models.The relation model between ore pulp characteristics and reagents consumption has been proposed using the RBF networks based on the industrial lead rougher flotation of lead & zinc ore, and the simulation has been conducted in the laboratory with the results matching the samples data very well. The Xilin Lead & Zinc Mine Flotation Process Intelligent Consultation System of Reagents Consumption, which suitable for industrial process, has been developed. The reagents consumption advised by this system would stabilize the flotation process, and increase the recoveries. It could be used for providing the technological consultation to flotation operators in site, and for training new operators."
