"The demand for energy has continued to rise worldwide in line with population growth. The majority of South Africa’s electricity is supplied by coal-fired power stations. The amount of fine coal (-2 mm) generated at coal processing plants has increased, due mainly to mechanized mining methods. Fine coal retains more water, which lowers its heating value.Drying the coal is costly and it is difficult to achieve the required moisture content. Consequently, coal fines are often discarded. An estimated 8% of the total energy value of mined coal is lost1.Fluidized bed technology is often used to dry coal thermally, but this method is expensive and has an adverse environmental impact. The objective of this study was to investigate the removal of moisture from fine coal (<2 mm) in a fluidized bed operated with dry fluidizing air at moderate temperatures as the drying agent. The effects of different air temperatures and relative humidity levels were investigated in a controlled environment. The study further investigated the influence of coal particle size on moisture removal.The drying rate was found to increase with increasing temperature. The relative humidity of the drying air had a more pronounced effect on the drying rate, even at temperatures as low as 25°C.. It became more challenging to remove moisture as the particle size decreased. The gain in calorific value was greater than the energy required to dry the coal samples, showing that a fluidized bed using moderately warm dry air is an energy-efficient drying technology. A test system was developed for measuring airflow in the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) ventilation gallery using a three-axis ultrasonic anemometer. The gallery was used to simulate face airflow conditions in underground mines having a blowing curtain. Airflow data collected at multiple sampling locations between the face and the end of the curtain were used to draw airflow profiles for different curtain setback distances, intake flow quantities and entry widths. In addition, methane was released at the face, measured at the sampling locations, and displayed as methane distribution in the area between the curtain and the face. Entry geometry had a significant effect on airflow patterns, and the flow patterns affected the distribution of methane in the entry. Flow measured at and parallel to the face was a good predictor of methane dilution and removal within two feet of the face.

MFIRE is a computer simulation program that performs normal ventilation network planning calculations, and dynamic transient state simulation of ventilation networks under a variety of conditions. The program is useful for the analysis of ventilation networks under thermal and mechanical influence. MFIRE simulates a mine&apos;s ventilation system and its response to altered ventilation parameters, external influences such as temperatures, and internal influences such as fires. Extensive output enables detailed quantitative analysis of the effects of the proposed alteration to the ventilation system Network simulation using digital computers has become widespread throughout the mining industry in recent years. However, as the sophistication of the simulator increases (MFIRE, for example), the complexity of input data requirements and interpretations of results requires more skill and knowledge from the users. Perhaps the most difficult part of using MFIRE is to construct the data set describing the mine&apos;s physical layout and its ventilation properties. The initial attempts to get the data set running often reveal unknown or ignored aspects of the mine&apos;s ventilation.

This paper presents an overview of methods that can be used to predict damage to buildings as a result of excavation-induced ground movements and describes an adaptive management approach for predicting, monitoring, and controlling excavation-induced ground movements. Successful updating of performance predictions depends equally on reasonable numerical simulations of performance, the type of monitoring data used as observations, and the optimization techniques used to minimize the difference between predictions and observed performance. This paper summarizes each of these factors and emphasizes their inter-dependence. Case studies are presented to illustrate the capabilities of this approach. Examples are given to show how optimized parameters based upon data obtained at early stages of excavation can be used to predict performance at latter stages, and how they can be applied to other excavations in similar geologic conditions.

Data from seven instrumented pile load tests in Milwaukee, Wisconsin and two other instrumented load tests reported in the literature, one in Evanston, Illinois and one in Houston, Texas were reviewed. The data were for pipe piles having diameters from 9-5/8 inches to 18 inches, driven to depths between 36 and 96 feet. These data were used to develop a relationship between effective vertical stress and unit side friction and unit end bearing. These relationships were based on readily measured soil parameters, undrained shear strength, Cu, and Standard Penetration Test (SPT) values. This Beta (ß) and Nt approach and four other methods were then used to calculate the bearing capacity of the nine cases analyzed. The results from each of the methods are compared with the measured results.

Mineral Resource Throughput Management is based on the extraction of the maximum potential value from an ore reserve with the emphasis to generate maximum ROI and ROR (return on reserve). A steel producing company in India implemented MRTM to significantly improve their ROI and ROR. The value chain of this company consists of their own iron ore and coal mines, ore washing plants, sinter plants, steel plants, and sales and marketing division. The target for the mines was to produce at a stable and predictable rate and at specific quality requirements. These requirements were set to improve productivity and ROI of the steel plant. The implementation constituted the alignment of the reserve potential, total production chain, human resources and management culture at the mines with the requirements of the steel plant. Many typical mining practices were challenged and changed. Production targets regarding lump vs. fines ratio, consistent product tons, quality targets such as Fe, Al content and moist, and standard deviation on the quality targets were not achieved. A reverse distribution model with release mechanisms to satisfy the demand were developed and implemented at the mines. A stable and predictable flow of mine product with quality standards well within the required standard deviation targets were achieved. The contribution from the mines to significantly improve the Net Profit, ROI and ROR of the company were reached.

By so doing the mining industry is kept informed of the availability of the latest equipment for safe use underground. This list supplements Bulletin 543, Permissible Mine Equipment Approved to January 1, 1953; Information Circular 7722, Permissible Mine Equipment Approved During the Calendar Years 1953-54; Information Circular 7840, Permissible Mine Equipment Approved During the Calendar Years 1955-56; and Information Circular 7957, Permissible Mine Equipment Approved During 1957-58. This list includes equipment meeting those standards that have been revised since Information Circular 7957 was .issued. Schedule 16E,4 a revision of Schedule 160, was approved May 19, 1960.

The paper examines the range of materials that have already been certified by the different Explosives Notified Bodies as well as recent national and European Commission decisions relating to this work. The implications of enlargement of the European Union are also discussed as is the future role of the Great Britain Explosives Notified Body in certification and assessment.

This report includes a short history of uranium and its uses, mineralogy of common uranium minerals, and information on the use of electronic prospecting equipment and tests for detecting the presence of uranium. Details are given on geologically favorable areas and formations and practical methods of prospecting. Some information is given on the staking of claims, what lands are open to prospecting, and methods of securing mining rights. A forecast of the economic outlook for uranium is included. Appendixes give sources of additional information and a list of libraries where unclassified Atomic Energy Commission reports may be consulted. Because the increasing use of uranium by industry has revived interest in prospecting and exploration for this element, the Bureau of Mines has issued this report, which brings up to date and expands the subject matter of a hand- book on uranium exploration and production published in 1956.l

This report describes the results and conclusions of the development and evaluation of a unique concept for a lightweight air powered drill tool for probe drilling in anthracite mines. A concept model of the lightweight air powered tool was constructed and evaluation testing conducted at the Kocher Coal Company Porter Tunnel Mine. The unique anchoring method proved to be extremely satisfactory and the overall light-weight air powered drill tool concept proved feasible. Based on the results of the concept model testing, two prototype production units were designed and manufactured. These prototype units proved to meet all of their design requirements of lightweight, portability, drilling controllability, structural integrity and miner acceptance. The need for a better bit and drill steel system, however, became evident during the testing program and recommendations are made for further investigation and development of a bit and drill steel system suitable for this application.

In the last two years the Commission for the Environment has received four Environmental Impact Reports (EIR) for Audit and has been or is involved with at least four environmental impact assessments (EIA) related to mining. The EIRs have included Weavers Coal Mine, the Monowai-Maratoto mining proposal, the Martha Hill mine and the Wainui Road Mill. The EIAs are related mainly to coal fields in the Waikato but also included a further EIA on Martha Hill.

The Bureau of Mines is studying possible modifications in conventional uranium ore-processing steps to confine and permit controlled disposal of radioactive wastes. A potential method of minimizing pollution from radio-active nuclides, principally radium 226, in uranium mill waste streams is to reuse the waste solutions within the mill. Such reuse of waste solution in the Kerr-McGee Shiprock-type process was investigated in the laboratory. The Shiprock mill employs a two-stage acid-leaching process for dissolution of the uranium, countercurrent decantation for liquid-solid separation and washing, and organophosphorus solvent extraction for recovery of the uranium and vanadium from solution. The simulated use of barren raffinate instead of fresh water in the mill circuit was carried through a laboratory campaign of 28 interlocked leaching, washing, and solvent extraction cycles. About 99 percent of the uranium and 91 percent of the vanadium were dissolved from the are, Washing efficiency in the thickener circuit averaged about 99.5 percent when the pulp was washed with enough barren raffinate and makeup water to recover 2.5 tons of pregnant solution per ton of ore. The only solution discarded was that contained in the washed and thickened leach residue. A buildup of salts due to recycling of solutions did not adversely affect operation of the washing circuit.

Sonic travel time logging of exploration boreholes is routinely used in Australia to obtain estimates of coal mine roof rock strength. Because sonic velocity logs are relatively inexpensive and easy to obtain during exploration, the technique has provided Australian underground coal mines with an abundance of strength data for use in all aspects of ground control design. However, the technique depends upon reliable correlations between the unconfined compressive strength (UCS) and the sonic velocity. This paper describes research recently conducted by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) aimed at developing a correlation for use by the U.S. mining industry. At three coreholes in Illinois, Pennsylvania, and southern West Virginia, sonic velocity logs were compared with point load tests for a broad range of coal measure rock types. For the entire data set, the relationship between UCS and sonic travel time is expressed by the following equation, where UCS is in psi and t is the travel time of the P-wave in microsec/ft. UCS = 468,000 x e-0.054t (1) The r-squared value for this equation is 0.87, indicating that a strong correlation between sonic travel time and UCS can be achieved with this technique. The paper also addresses the steps that are necessary to ensure that high-quality sonic logs are obtained for use in estimating UCS.

This paper presents the results of intermittent study begun in 1956 by the Federal Bureau of Mines of yieldable steel arches and yieldable steel ring sets installed for support of development openings in metal mines. Observations were made of this type of support in several iron mines in the northeast and north-central states. The sets, both arches and rings fabricated in the United States, are made from a hot-rolled, cold bent, structural U-shaped steel section in two weights, 15 pounds and 21 pounds per foot. The lighter section is generally used, It is 4.41 square inches in cross section area, and the calculation is that a 6-foot length of this structural shape installed as a supporting column, will safely carry the same load as a Douglas fir post of the same length but of 22 times the cross-sectional area of the steel.

The Objective: To reduce the noise generated by the exhausting air from a pneumatic roof bolting drill to a maximum of 90 decibels. Any attachment used for this purpose must be lightweight and must not cause a significant increase in back pressure. The Approach: Absorb the noise with a properly designed muffler that will permit sufficient airflow without affecting the normal operation of the drill. How It Works: The air exhausted by the drill enters the muffler through perforated disks into a resonator chamber. It then passes through a series of expansion and contraction chambers and is expelled to the atmosphere through another perforated disk. The basic muffler design for the pneumatic drill was established by using both digital computer analysis and experimentally simulated noise tests. A systematic study of the mechanism of interaction of 218Po(RaA) armed by the decay of 222Rn with airborne particulate matter has been made. The rate of attachment of RaA to particles in the diameter range of 0.1 µm to 10.0 µm has been measured as a function of particle size, concentration, and composition, radon concentration, time of interaction, relative humidity and temperature. It was found that under the conditions in these experiments the attachment rate was proportional to the square of the particle diameter and varied with temperature and relative humidity. The composition of the particles apparently has no effect on the attachment. The variation in attachment rate was related to a sticking probability coefficient of approximately 0.02 that varies systematically with temperature and humidity. In addition, the rate of deposition of RaA on the wall of the attachment kinetics system was measured and also found to change with temperature and relative humidity.

INTRODUCTION The plate loading test is a simple, useful tool in rock mechanics. The test consists of applying load to a rock surface and noting the resulting deflections. Plate loading tests are typically used to obtain modulus of deformation and related material properties, but can also provide information on blast damage and in situ stresses (1). Properties obtained are of course dependent on test procedure and test environment . In order to eliminate extraneous results it is essential that the interrelationship between the physical test environment and various rock properties obtained be thoroughly understood. Test interpretation is based upon elasticity methods, and the general assumptions made during analysis which include the following: 1. The rock is homogeneous, isotropic, elastic and continuous. 2. The stress is induced in a semi-infinite solid. 3. The plate is perfectly rigid or completely flexible. 4. Rock properties are independent of in situ stresses. 5. The plate and rock surface are smooth and parallel.

This paper presents a unique case history that documents the use of a braced secant pile wall to underpin a heavily loaded footing inside of a manufacturing plant. Construction of a pit for a new manufacturing process directly next to the footing necessitated the underpinning. The footing supports an overhead crane that needed to remain operational throughout construction of the pit and therefore, settlement of the footing could not be tolerated. The base of the footing was about 7.7 feet above the base of the 17-foot deep excavation. The footing bears on a silty clay deposit that grades from a stiff consistency beneath the footing to a soft/medium consistency near the base of the pit excavation. This paper describes the design and construction of the secant pile wall and bracing to control wall deformations, ground movements and settlement of the footing. The footing was monitored for settlement throughout construction of the pit and no measurable movement was observed.

This paper firstly reviewed the state of the art in the recycling of used Printed Wiring Boards (PWB), and then presented part of the authors study on the combustion of PWB powders with and without the addition of catalyst. During the combustion of PWB powders without catalyst addition, there were two obvious exothermic reactions, one at 300-380oC, the other at 450-500oC. With the addition of catalyst during PWB combustion, there were no obvious exothermic reactions, indicating that dehalogenation reactions are not exothermic: The results showed that NaHCO3 and CaCO3 were very efficient to control the emission of Br2 and C6H6, lowering 80% compared to the case without catalyst, Na2CO3 can slightly control the emission of Br2 gas but not for C6H6 gas mission, and NaOH has no any effect of the control of both gases.
