Disposal of brines produced with crude petroleum and natural gas is a continually increasing problem. The necessity for studying this problem has been realized more generally in recent years, and in August 1934 an agreement was made between the Kansas State Board of Health and the United States Bureau of Mines to conduct a cooperative technical study of methods of brine disposal. To date one paper in the technical press4/ and three reports5/6/ have been published in which are given results of studies carried on under this cooperative agreement. In the Mid-Continent fields, the methods used most generally for handling oil-field brines are: (1) Impounding in evaporation ponds; (2) controlled diversion into surface streams; and (3) injection into subsurface formations through wells assigned for this purpose. Various States recognize one or more of the methods as legally authorized procedure. Part of the Imittos Western Peripheral Motorway in Athens is the twin road tunnel in the vicinity of American College, with 20m excavation diameter. In the paper, the environmental and other requirements, the geometry and the geological – geotechnical characteristics of the rock formations in the construction area are given. Information regarding the modeling and analysis methods that are used for the design of the temporary support, the final lining and the wedge and slope stability analysis is described thoroughly. Finally, the results of the analyses are compared with these of measurements and general remarks during the construction of the tunnels.

IntroductionAutogenous or semi-autogenous mills in conjunction with rod or ball mills are used with preference for ore processing. Most ball mills are of closed-circuit design and operate with mechanical classifiers (spiral or rake classifiers) or hydrocyclones. In other words, the ores undergo wet primary grinding, since slurries are required for the downstream separation stages anyway. This paper presents a new grinding system based on high pressure comminution of ores. This grinding process allows:- Energy savings of up to 20 % or more- Capacity increases of up to 100 % and more- Reduction of wear costs- Smaller units for new installation and thus- Reduced investment costsThese advantages are highly interesting for both new installations and conversion projects, particulary in cases where an increasing hardeness of the ore, i.e. rising Bond Work Index, reduces the output of the plants or where the metal assay of the ore decreases and the capacity of the existing systems has to be increased. POLYCOM high-pressure grinding rolls have established themselves with great success already for grinding cement clinker, granulated blast furnace slag, limestone, cement raw materials, coal and other materials.Meanwhile more than 250 high pressure grinding rolls have been installed worldwide. Capacities up to 1.000 t/h with roller diameter up to 2.8 m and drive units up to 2.400 kW are installed."

An ongoing research program is characterizing the ore qualities that most affect mine and mill processing of iron. Current practice uses assays of magnetic iron and silica, but additional qualities are needed for advanced process control. If additional qualities can be measured from core, blastholes, or process samples, they can be modeled and controlled similarly. What qualities, other than assays, hinder or facilitate beneficiation at each processing step, and how can they be measured in the mine/mill ore stream? This paper describes preliminary determinations of the effects of ore chemistry, hardness, blasthole drill performance, fragmentation control, and grindability on mill performance.

"Different hydrometallurgical processes have been studied in order to recover manganese(II) from oxidised minerals such as MnO2 (Vegliò and Toro, 1994). An innovative acid reductive leaching carried out in soft experimental conditions was here considered using agro-industrial wastes containing carbohydrates as reducing agents (Vegliò et al., 1998).The leaching process was investigated from a kinetic and equilibrium point of view in order to optimize the experimental conditions and obtain high purity and concentrated MnSO4 solutions.The overall leaching process (not considering the complex network of intermediate oxidation reactions of the carbohydrates in hot sulphuric acid medium (Vegliò and Toro, 1994)) can be described by the following reaction:24 MnO2 + C12H22O11 + 48 H 24 Mn2+ + 12 CO2 + 35 H2O (1)A Shrinking Core Model (SCM) was modified by a variable activation energy term to take into account both the variable reagent concentrations and the reaction rate change with respect to the manganese dioxide conversion. The influence of the particle size in the kinetic model is discussed with the support of SEM analysis and BET surface measurements before and after leaching.Manganese extraction yield was maximised (170-190 g/L) using appropriate carbohydrates and acid excesses, while impurity concentrations were kept low (Fe<10ppm and Ca<300ppm) pre-treating the ores, using hydroalcoholic leaching medium and different combinations of down-stream processes. In particular precipitation, solvent extraction and adsorption onto active carbon were tested to eliminate Fe and Ca from MnSO4 solutions."

This paper explains the politics of mine nationalization in contemporary South Africa. Nationalization and privatization typically occur in the oil, mineral resources, and state utilities sectors, and they tend to follow one another in a long-term cyclical pattern. The paper explains why the current international environment has encouraged demands for nationalization and other forms of ?resource nationalism? in the South African minerals sector. It goes on to describe how the resurgence of resource nationalism has been influenced by internal factional politics in the African National Congress. It concludes that nationalization is unlikely to be the outcome of current policy deliberations within the ANC.

This work had as its objective the characterization of a waste material, steel slag, generated from an integrated steel plant, with a view to its recycling and incorporation into red ceramics fabrication. The characterization was performed in terms of chemical composition by X-ray fluorescence (XRF), particles size distribution, X-ray diffraction (XRD), thermal analysis (DTA/TG) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The results indicate that the steel slag presents high amount of Ca, Fe, Mg and Si. The weight loss of the steel slag at temperatures above 800oC is associated with calcium carbonate decomposition. The coarse particle size of the steel slag is inadequate for its direct recycling into red ceramic fabrication. It is necessary to screen or to grind the waste. As a possible solution, it is suggested that screening or grinding the steel slag to a convenient particle size distribution would allow its successful industrial incorporation into red ceramics products.

Oxides of sulphur are corrosive and are produced when sulphur-containing fuels are burned. Sulphur dioxide (SO2) is a colourless gas with a characteristic, irritating, pungent odour. Exposure routes to the human body are mainly through inhalation and skin and/or eye contact. Symptoms of exposure to SO2 may include irritation of the eyes, nose, and throat; rhinorrhea (discharge of thin nasal mucous); choking; cough; and reflex bronchoconstriction. To protect employees against the ill health effects of SO2 exposure, they are often required to make use of respiratory protection whenever entering areas were the SO2 levels exceed the statutory limits. The use of respiratory protective equipment should always be a last resort and should be considered only after other control measures have failed to reduce occupational exposure levels to below the occupational exposure limit or whilst other control measures are being investigated or implemented. Whenever the use of respiratory protection equipment is considered, it should always be used as part of a comprehensive respiratory protection plan. It is also extremely important that all potentially exposed persons are adequately and comprehensively informed and trained.

Two analytical solutions for estimating the ovaling deformation and forces in circular tunnels are widely used in engineering practice, due to soil-structure interaction under seismic loading. This paper discusses the discrepancy between the two analytical and finite difference methods. A comparison of the two analytical methods shows that the calculated forces and displacements are identical for the condition of full-slip between the tunnel lining and ground. However, the calculated lining thrusts differ by an order of magnitude when considering no-slip between the tunnel lining and the ground. The analytical solutions are compared to numerical analyses of the no-slip condition using the finite difference method to validate which of the two methods provide the correct method. To achieve the goal, numerical modelling, field data of the Kuhin railway tunnel and Manjil earthquake characteristics are used. Numerical analysis results agree with one of the analytical solutions that provides a higher estimate of the thrust on the tunnel lining, thus highlighting the limitation of the other analytical solution.

"The Kudremukh Iron Ore Company Limited, a government of India enterprise, has constructed iron ore mining, crushing, handling and concentrator facilities at Kudremukh, in southwest India. Concentrate produced is pumped 65 km to dewatering, storage and ship-loading facilities which were built at the same time at the sea port of Mangalore.A computer-based distributed process control system was implemented for all operations at Kudremukh and to interface with and monitor the Mangalore plant.The control system is examined from various standpoints, beginning with a description of its architecture, method of process input/output connection, and major hardware items.Software considerations and process applications are then looked at, with a review of the integration of the computer vendor&apos;s system software with user-developed applications programming. A control example of crusher operations is provided.Following the descriptive segment is a discussion of the design considerations and decision factors involved in the implementation of such a system considering the type of process and the remote nature of the installation site. It ends with a review of actual operating experience and conclusions regarding both this system and future similar applications.ScopeThe following is a discussion of the computer-based process control system applied for the Kudremukh Iron are Company Limited&apos;s ore handling, concentrating and shipping facilities located in South India.A general description of the process and plant equipment will be followed by an examination of the control system from the points of view of hardware and signal flow, software requirements, design considerations, implementation logistics and operating experience. On January 14, 1974 a fire occurred in the 3 East mains of the Joanne Mine of Eastern Associated Coal Corp. in Rachel, West Virginia. The mine was evacuated without injury and sealed completely at the surface within 24 hours. It was decided by the coal company along with the U, S, Bureau of Mines, the West Virginia Bureau of Mints and MESA that remote sealing of the fire zone would be attempted. This report summarizes the remote sealing effort and those activities directly related to the remote sealing effort. This chapter provides a brief history of previous remote sealing attempts, a description of the recently developed remote sealing system and a description of the Joanne Mine operation as it related to and affected the remote sealing effort.

In today?s high tech world, systems are getting bigger, faster, better. To remain at the leading edge, in any business, depends on accurate but flexible design thereby allowing operational managers to provide alternatives to improve their operations. The ultimate goal is to deliver to plan, with optimum economics. Mining is no different, with falling prices and escalating costs, improved margins become the focal objective. There are many ways to achieve this, ranging from operational efficiency improvements through production scenarios to planning initiatives. Of all, planning usually receives the least attention, yet it is the area of most influence on the NPV of the reserve. With computer technology, numerous concepts and iterations are possible thereby closing the gap between optimal and actual design. This paper discusses the application of the split shell design at the De Beers Venetia open pit in South Africa.

The Factorial Model Experimenters are often interested in systems that are multi-factorial. A multi-factorial system is one whose output is believed or known to be dependent on the particular settings of several inputs, or factors. We can think of these factors as defining a space, with each point in this space corresponding to a particular set of factor settings. Experimenting can be thought of as exploring this space - finding out how the response of the system changes as factor settings are changed. There are several challenges in this exploration, among which are deciding what region to explore, designing an experiment that explores it most effectively, and describing the results of the exploration. This paper deals principally with the last of these; it shows how the factorial model can be used to describe how the response of the system changes as factor settings are changed. A strength of the factorial model is that it treats the factors as causes of change in the system&apos;s response and focuses on relations among these causes. In particular, the factorial model focuses on whether causes act independently on the system (in a sense to be explained below), or whether they interact. This is important because the experimenter generally seeks to control the system, and because control based on causes that act independently of other causes is relatively simple, whereas control based on causes that interact is more challenging. Also, mapping the space - finding out how the response of the system changes as factor settings are changed - will require less work if, during the exploration, it can be determined which of the causes act independently. For the sake of example, let us assume that the space we are exploring is three-dimensional, and that we have already defined, for each of the three factors, the range of interest. Let us consider all the ways in which the response of the system might depend on the settings of these three factors. In the simplest case, the response in this region does not depend on any of the factors. The response is constant throughout the space, at say, 80 units.

Pyrrhotite crystallises as either a hexagonal or monoclinic structure, both of which can occur in ore deposits. In general, pyrrhotite is not considered as a valuable mineral unless it contains considerable amounts of other metals like nickel or copper. In fact it causes numerous problems in flotation including intensive oxygen consumption, which results in poor selectivity among sulphide minerals in the processing of complex sulphide ores. Also, because of its high sulphur content, pyrrhotite is a major contributor to environmentally detrimental sulphur dioxide (SO2) emissions from smelters. Pyrrhotite also interacts galvanically with grinding media via electrolyte species present in the flotation pulp, resulting in media corrosion. The most effective way to reject pyrrhotite is through a separation stage, which may be difficult when both types of pyrrhotite are present in the ore. In this regard depression of pyrrhotite through a flotation stage may be applied. Pyrrhotite depression by either intensive oxidation or by using sodium cyanide has been practiced. Results present in this work show that NaCN can depress pyrrhotite effectively when combined with an alkaline environment and low collector concentrations.

As mining operations in the United States (US) have become more productive, controlling the dust exposure of mine workers has become more challenging. In response, US mining operations are applying basic controls at elevated levels and are looking to emerging control tech­nologies in an effort to better control airborne respirable dust levels. The Pittsburgh Research Laboratory (PRL) of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) conducts research to develop and/or improve control technologies that reduce the respirable dust exposure of workers in underground coal mines. The goals of this research involve optimizing the use of water sprays and ventilating air, as well as, evaluating emerging control tech­nologies. An overview of dust controls typically utilized in underground US coal mines will be provided. An update on ongoing PRL research efforts that are evaluating new control technologies will also be presented.

The upgrading project for two hydropower plants in Slovenia, Europe, requires two new pressure tunnels: Plave II (5.9 km Flysch) and Doblar II (3.6 km Limestone). It is the worldwide largest application of the Double-Shield TBM technology combined with an extremely thin-walled monoshell honeycomb lining system. The first drive has been completed by end of June 2000 achieving best performances of 50m/d and almost 1,100m/mth. In September 2000 the TBM started the second tunnel without any required adjustments due to geological or other reasons. Another 52m/d have been bored already within one production day of two 8 h shifts achieving a maximum penetration rate of more than 6m/h. The completion of the Doblar drive can be expected by February 2001.
