A year after the Soviet Union invaded Afghanistan and replaced President Amin with their choice, President Karmal, Afghanistan remained in turmoil. In some respects, the political and economic situation in Afghanistan was no better by the end of 1980 than it was preceding the December 1979 invasion. The Government faced widespread and growing alienation and resistance, virulent factionalism within the ruling party, and an acute shortage of material. The mining sector of the country did not fare better either; the only raw material produced in a significant amount was natural gas, which was exported mainly to the Soviet Union. No statistics on production of other minerals and materials were available by yearend. Most of Afghanistan's gas production was from the Hodja-Gugerdag Field, southeast of Shibarghan. The gas flow from this field had been about 300 million cubic feet per day since 1961. An estimated 230 to 250 million cubic feet per day of Hodja-Gugerdag's production was moved by pipeline across the Amu-Darya River into the Soviet Union. Most of the remainder was transmitted eastward to a 105,000-ton-per-year fertilizer plant and an electric power station built near Mazar-i-Sharif with Soviet assistance. After the Soviet invasion, the second gasfield, Djar-Kuduk, in the Shibarghan area, was brought under production. This field, which will produce about 200 million cubic feet per day, consists of four gas zones in the Jurassic and lower Cretaceous zones between 3,000 and 8.500 feet deep. The gas has a high hydrogen sulfide content, with considerable carbon dioxide, A new treatment plant was built at Djar-Kuduk by Soviet technicians under a turnkey contract at the end of 1980. It is believed that most of the Djar-Kuduk's initial flow will be sent to the Soviet Union.

[Executive Director’s note: ISEE is committed to continuing its efforts to ensure that blasters be made aware of the issue of migration of carbon monoxide resulting from blasting operations. In the July/August 2001 issue of the J o u rnal we printed excerpts from “Carbon Monoxide - The Silent Hazard,” an article from the Safety Update, published by Nobel Insurance Services. We also re minded readers of the text from the 17th edition of the ISEE Blasters Handbook in its section on trench blasting as follows: “...consideration must be given to the proper venting of gases generated from the blasting. Should those gases spread laterally rather than vent directly to the surface, the gases may travel underg round and finally vent well outside of the planned area. Such events may be caused by the strata, soil conditions or root systems, or existing and/or abandoned utilities or other man-made structures. In the worst situation, gases resulting from the detonation such as CO2, CO, and/or N Ox may travel through the strata and find their way into basements of nearby homes or businesses.” While incidents are rare, a number of cases in re c e n t years have resulted from outdoor blasting operations p roducing carbon monoxide gas that has migrated t h rough the earth and accumulated in nearby enclosed spaces. T h e re are steps that a blaster can take to be proactive in preventing incidents. These steps and studies of the occurrence have been expertly presented in several papers presented at ISEE conferences and included in the ISEE Conference Proceedings, available th rough the Blasters Library. In addition, Material Safety Data Sheets provided with explosives used in surf a c e blasting should provide additional information on gases p roduced by detonation. Below, we have reprinted the IME white paper, entitled “Fumes from Blasting Operations.” The paper underscores the unique set of circumstances that combine to contribute to high concentrations of CO measurements in underground, enclosed spaces following the detonation of explosive materials and provides recommendations to blasters

Falls of small pieces of rock from between roof bolts continue to cause fatalities and to injure hundreds of coal miners each year. Roof screen is the most effective way to prevent these incidents, but some mines are reluctant to use it because they believe installing screen can be awkward, expensive and time-consuming. The most common type of roof bolting machine used in mines today is the dual boom, outside-controlled roof bolter. Mines who install roof screen using these machines have developed some machine modifications and techniques to ease roof screen installation. This paper describes some successful techniques and machine modifications that are being used in productive mines to assist with roof screen installation. Since the material handling involved with roof screen installation can expose miners to an increased risk of musculoskeletal injuries, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) ergonomists, designed machine modifications and implemented a series of tests to evaluate roof screen handling procedures for outside-controlled, dual boom roof bolting machines. Roof screen installation can also have a positive economic impact on a mine by reducing the cost of injuries, workers? compensation, required spot or re-bolting, and clean-up of long term travel and belt entries.

Blasting induced rock fragmentation is an art that has been developed and refined for hundred’s of years through blasting and recording the results. Good blasting fragmentation practices were thus developed through experience. However, this method requires a history that is typically developed in a mine over a number of years and sometimes at considerable expense. Quantification of fragmentation as a function of rock-mass characteristics and blast design is attractive. Developments towards this end have included semi-empirical methods as well as computer codes that explicitly treat shock wave transmission and the subsequent rock breakage. This paper will present predictions of fragmentation resulting from rock blasting using the computer code AUTODYN and a new state-of-the-art material model for brittle rock and concrete.

The Rock Mass Rating (RMR) system is an internationally recognized classification system that can be used for preliminary ground control design. The RMR system assigns quantifiable values to predefined classified parameters of a rock mass. Assigning a single value rather than a range to each parameter is a source of uncertainty, however, assigning a single value can be useful for further studies related to RMR ratings. Fuzzy systems are being used in an increasing number of application areas where linguistic rules are used to describe the system. In past decades, fuzzy systems have been successfully used in geotechnical and mining engineering problems to cope with uncertain data as well as with vagueness. In such scenarios, linguistic rules and rating-based classification of rock masses have always been questionable. The objective of this study is to apply fuzzy set theory to the RMR classification system. The fuzzy system proposed in this study is specified for weak and very weak rock masses (RMR<50) based on data collected from Nevada gold mines where 68% of RMR data is in the ?poor? and ?very poor? classes. In this approach, a Mamdani fuzzy algorithm has been constructed to evaluate basic RMR89 rating for the ?wet condition.? Comparison between basic RMR89 and fuzzy RMR shows the fuzzy RMR system is valid to predict RMR from the discrete rating of each input parameter.

Nevertheless, a practitioner knows that there is a broader context in which the practice of sampling takes place. This broader context, being less well defined than the theory of correct sampling, receives correspondingly less exposure which this commentary??prompted by? BG?seeks to rectify. ?Correctness? of a sampler is the central concern of BG, where it is presented as a sharp ?black-and-white ?distinction. This circular is part 5 of the third paper (entitled "Excavation") of a series summarizing the technical problems involved in the production and preparation of sand and gravel. Part 1 discussed the use of power shovels, draglines, and excavator cranes; part 2, power scrapers, slackline cable-way excavators, and hydraulic monitors; part 3, hydraulic, clamshell, ladder, and dipper dredges; and part 4, haulage systems in general, with particular reference to locomotive and car, hoist and car, and remote-control systems. This circular discusses the use of motor trucks, conveyor belts, pumps end pipe lines, barges and towboats, and aerial trams. MOTOR-TRUCK HAULAGE During recent years motor trucks have gained considerable ground as a successful competitor of locomotive haulage for quarries and gravel pits. Often where trucks have displaced locomotives and cars the operators readily admit an increase in both labor and total haulage operating costs but point to some other advantage as offsetting the extra expense. In other instances haulage costs have beep reduced by the use of trucks. In still others operators, having replaced locomotive haul with trucks, have again returned to the earlier method. Obviously gasoline-driven motor trucks cannot successfully compete with other types of haulage under all conditions. The apparent&apos; growth in the number of advocates of truck haulage, however, indicates that it has passed the experimental stage and become a permanent competitor to other tyres.

South East Asia, China, Eastern Europe and CIS are slowly becoming significant consumers of ferroniobium. As a result, the world niobium market has been stable despite the slowdown in steel production in 2001. This paper will describe present producers, capacities and the current market conditions.

Interpreting the behaviour of granular material and simulating the gravity flow are complex processes in cave mining methods. In this paper, a new Cellular Automata based code – FlowSim – is used as a flexible tool to simulate the gravity flow and subsidence zone in block caving mines. The simulation results of the gravity flow model in a real scaled mine as well as a scaled physical model are presented in this study. In this research, FlowSim was first calibrated at a mine, based on the information obtained from smart markers. These markers were located in five points of the second block of the Esmeralda sector, at the El Teniente copper mine, Codelco, Chile. The calibration was performed with the objective of reducing the discrepancy between the extraction zone defined by markers in the mine and FlowSim outputs. Regarding the mine data, FlowSim was calibrated with the minimum error of ten per cent between real and simulated results. Then, the calibrated FlowSim model was used to simulate the flow behaviour of a scaled physical model. This model was constructed in the Block Caving Laboratory of the University of Chile to scale down the same block of the Esmeralda sector with the scale of 1:200. The FlowSim outputs show that this software enables the simulation of the gravity flow of the scaled model with less than five per cent discrepancy in grade and dilution entry to the drawpoints. According to the obtained results, this paper recommends FlowSim as an appropriate tool which can improve the design of production level in block caving and can enhance the prediction of the subsidence zone and dilution entry.CITATION:Castro, R, Hekmat, A, Fuentes, M, Armijo, F and Rodriguez, F, 2016. The Ni oxide was reduced with a CO-CO2-N2 gas mixture and the effects were observed of process variables such as roasting temperature, time and CO partial pressure. Extraction of over 90% of Ni was achieved by ammoniacal leaching of ore that had been reduced for 1 h at 760 degrees C under a gas mixture with a volumetric CO/(CO+CO2) ratio of 0.57. The kinetic data were found to conform to the Ginstling-Brounstein equation. The applicability of this model was confirmed by evaluating the apparent activation energy with the use of independently constructed differential and integral plots, which showed an excellent match

The demand for phosphate will continue into the future, because phosphate is currently irreplaceable as a plant nutrient and in many chemical applications. Phosphate is not recycled, so the supply must be replenished through a process of mining and purification. The most energy intensive part of the process, separation of phosphate from the ore, requires 54 to 78% (depending on the method used) of the estimated 0.5 quads of energy consumed by the U.S. phosphate industry. This paper provides data from a project designed to determine if a biotechnology can be developed to separate phosphate from its ore. Several hundred microorganisms (both bacteria and fungi) capable of solubilization of phosphate ore have been isolated from the environment. Work is ongoing to determine the mechanism for solubilization. In addition, how these organisms could be used in a bioprocess is being investigated.

The greater part of this paper comprises the material used in a lecture delivered to the South Queensland Branch of the Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy in September, 1949. It contains little in the way of original matter, its main purpose being to call attention to the need for research into the properties of Queensland coals and to indicate some of the lines such investigations might profitably follow.Since the lecture was given the Powell Duffryn (1949) 1 report, which has made an excellent start along these lines, has been printed. This report is, however, only a beginning, though a big one, and there is ample room for many years of work along similar lines.The paper is based largely on the work of de Jersey (1946, 1949)2,3,4,5 and Jones and de Jersey (1947)6, but these workers in turn owe a debt to the work of many British and American investigators, too many to enumerate. The sulphides can be arranged in a series determined by the relative amounts of ionic and covalent bonding present. This series is similar to the paragenetic series common to most sulphide ore deposits. Investigation of the surface tensions of the corresponding heavy metal iodides by the maximum bubble pressure method throws some light upon this relationship. It is shown that the surface tension of molten iodides decreases as the chemical bonding within them becomes more covalent. These results are interpreted in terms of the constitution of the melts, and are extended to cover the case of sulphides in solution in a silicate melt. It is concluded that sulphides tend to lower the surface tension of silicate melts and that this tendency becomes greater as the bonding within the dissolved sulphide groups becomes more covalent. A possible relationship between this conclusion and the origin of paragenesis in sulphide ore deposits is indicated.INTRODUCTIONIt is well known that the order of deposition, or paragenesis of sulphide minerals is remarkably similar in hypogene ore deposits throughout the world. This widespread similarity points towards the operation of some fundamental process which must be intimately connected with -the genesis of these ores. We present results from petrophysical studies to characterize a Zn-Pb-Ag deposit in Nash Creek, New Brunswick. The measurements are part of an integrated study that includes geological and geophysical data acquired on the property. In order to successfully characterize the ore body, an understanding of the relevant physical parameters and their change with vertical and lateral variations of the target lithology is necessary. The quality of the estimated 3D variation in the physical properties is supported by the presence of several boreholes that randomly span the survey region. Density was measured from cores of thirty-two boreholes across the area. Seventeen of these boreholes constitute two intersecting borehole profiles, which is ideal for locally modeling the 3D distribution of the ore deposit. High densities (>3.2g/cm3) correlate strongly with Zn-rich mineralization zones (low resistivity). Compression and shear wave velocity measurements made from representative core samples of the regional geology range from ~2.91 to ~6.41 km/s for P-waves and from ~1.41 to ~4.20 km/s for S-waves. The lower bounds of these velocity values correspond to regions with a high degree of alteration. Moreover, porosity estimates from rocks on the property suggest that porosities range from 0.35% to 11.79%. Induced polarization (IP) measurements confirm that mineralized samples show a significant chargeability and resistivity contrast with respect to the host rock. Thus, chargeability and resistivity information can be combined to adequately identify conductors associated with mineralization in electrical survey data. Information on these physical parameters and their 3D statistical distribution have serious implications on various aspects of mineral exploration that include: resource estimation, choice of geophysical data acquisition and interpretation, and information for preliminary rock stability assessment.

Whole-structure and mid-wall responses of 33 non-traditional structures to surface coal mine blasting were characterized. Eighty-nine blasts were conducted at 11 mine sites throughout the U.S. to measure blastgenerated dynamic response of structures typically found in the proximity of surface coal mining. Structures selected for this study include log-type, manufactured (single- and double-wide trailers), “mine camp”-type, adobe, and stone. Traditional acoustic microphones, t&axial (ground) and single component (structure) velocity transducers were used to record airblast, ground motions, and structures response time histories with a common time base. Wall crack displacement gages were used to record static and dynamic movement of existing drywall cracks. The relative responses of selected “atypical” structures to blast vibrations and nonblasting causes of structural stress, including natural forces, environmental effects, and human habitation, are compared. The purpose of this study is to document and compare vibration characteristics of structures that were not included in previous studies conducted by the U.S. Bureau of Mines and others in establishing the widely adopted safe level blast vibration criteria in the U.S. An important objective of this study is to outline an evaluation process including structure uniqueness relative to cracking susceptibility.

The final tunnel lining for this project involved pumping vast quantities of concrete over large distances under the extremely busy streets of lower Manhattan. Approximately 68,000 cubic meters (89,000 cubic yards) were pumped from various locations over 152 meters (500 feet) below ground (Figure 1) to create nearly 14.5 kilometers (9 miles) of 3.05 meter (10 foot) diameter tunnel. Total distances pumped exceeded 1,645 meters (5,400 feet) horizontally after a vertical difference of over 152 meters (500 feet). The urban setting of the operation, coupled with the long distances over which concrete was pumped, created many problems which had to be dealt with along the way. A three-shift labor operation was implemented to allow sequential pouring of tunnel sections nearly every day. The fine tuning of the mix design was critical to make this operation successful.

The widely employed IPCC models for the release of methane from underground coalmining operations are reviewed, and put in the context of the South African National Communication on greenhouse gas emissions. Then attempts to calibrate the model via measurements on South African coalmines are described. These attempts failed because it rapidly became clear that the IPCC model, involving methane adsorbed by the coal and released (a) by the depressurization of the strata caused by mining, (b) from the broken coal and (c) from coal remaining in roof, floor, pillars or goaf after mining, was not valid. Instead, measurements showed that the methane release was very variable, sporadically falling to zero. Carbon dioxide concentrations were monitored at the same time as methane, and followed methane concentrations. An alternative model was developed, in which methane was largely displaced from the coal and held in fissures, cleats and pores, which, when intersected by mining, released methane into the ventilation stream. In a key test of this hypothesis, methane concentrations around a continuous miner were monitored both during operation and after shutdown. Even during operation, methane became undetectable. It is hypothesized that heating of the South African coal-seams during the emplacement of the igneous dykes that cut so many of the seams caused displacement of the methane from the coal into the pores. This fissure-held methane, or free methane, is released rapidly once a pathway through the coal into the mine atmosphere is established. In contrast, methane adsorbed in the coal, and measured as the seam gas, desorbs relatively slowly. Measurements suggest that on average about 50%of the adsorbed methane is lost one day after mining. By that time, the coal will have left the mine, so that the remaining seam gas will be released to the atmosphere outside the mine. Attempts to measure methane emissions from surface coal-mining operations showed very little detectable methane. Coal from surface operations, which was milled and exposed to atmosphere, adsorbed gas from the air. It is concluded that methane release from surface operations is probably less than 3Gg/a. It is estimated that the total methane release from the coalmining industry amounts to about 72 Gg/a, as opposed to the National Communication estimates of 323 Gg/a in 1990 and 317 Gg/a in 1994. However, there are large errors associated with these estimates, and it is recommended that the methodology outlined in this report be extended to as many mines as possible to reduce the errors that are inherent in the physical processes underlying the release of methane from South African coalmines.

The Juneau Office of the U.S. Bureau of Mines has undertaken a study of the environmental permitting process for major mines in Alaska to identify the effects ecosystem management has had or could have on the permitting process. To date, ecosystem management affects major mine permitting in Alaska primarily through the NEPA environmental assessment process. In Alaska, only the Forest Service has instituted ecosystem management in an overt and organized manner, while other agencies are doing so less directly. In recent Bureau of Mines publications, the mine permitting process has been described using case studies of several recently permitted mines in Alaska. The insights into the permitting process and the conclusions of these reports are reviewed and summarized. Several ecosystem management issues were identified in the case studies, including the need for: effective communication between agencies; standardization and coordination of NEPA environmental impact assessment and environmental monitoring programs among agencies, and assessment and selection of alternatives based on risks to ecosystems regardless of jurisdictional boundaries or environmental media-specific regulations. Ecosystem management could be used as a way to systematize, organize, standardize, and coordinate permitting and monitoring requirements and management perspectives among government agencies and project proponents.

These investigations were undertaken as part of the Bureau of Mines program for the development and evaluation of high temperature nonmetallic materials. This report consists of thermal expansion and phase inversion measurements by high-temperature X-ray diffractometry on the principal oxides of beryllium (BeO), calcium (CaO), titanium (TiO2 ), zirconium (ZrO2 ), hafnium (HfO2), and thorium (ThO2); all were high-purity commercially available oxides. Thermal expansion values were calculated from unit cell dimensions measured at selected temperatures. Expansion was determined parallel to each major crystallographic axis for the anisotropic oxides: BeO, TOi2, ZrC2, and HfO2. Combined random and systematic errors in the thermal expansion values are considered to be less than 3 percent of the total expansion at 500° C. and approximately 2 percent at 1,000° C. No hysteresis in the expansion curves was noted between heating and cooling cycles. The Bureau&apos;s values were compared with published expansion measurements obtained by X-ray diffraction, dilatometric, interferometric, and telemicroscopic techniques. For anisotropic oxides, average linear expansion values were calculated from the volume expansion.
