"According to Darcy’s equation, the rate of dewatering varies as inverse square of the surface area of the particles to be dewatered and is proportional to the pressure drop across a filter cake. Thus, the difficulty in dewatering fine mineral concentrates can be overcome by using high-pressure filters. When treating ultrafine particles, however, it is often necessary to further dewater the filter cake using a thermal dryer. In the present work, novel dewatering aids that can reduce the pressure requirement have been developed. The reagents are designed to reduce surface tension, increase particle hydrophobicity and increase capillary radius, all at the same time. They were tested for dewatering mineral and coal concentrates in both laboratory and pilot-scale tests. The results show that the use of the novel dewatering aids can substantially reduce cake moistures and, at the same time, increase throughput. In this communication, the case history of using the reagents commercially at the Garpenberg concentrator is given. The use of the novel dewatering aids allowed the operators to use a vacuum filter to obtain desired cake moistures and obviate the need to use a thermal dryer.INTRODUCTIONDewatering is an integral part of mineral and coal processing operations, as it is necessary to remove water from concentrates (or clean coal) to minimize shipping costs, meet contract specifications, and recycle the process water. Several industrial-scale HydroFloat separators have recently been installed at Mosaic’s South Fort Meade beneficiation plant for the purpose of improving phosphate recovery and throughput capacity. This technology was implemented after numerous laboratory, bench-scale, and on-site, pilot-scale test campaigns. The results from this detailed test work provided sufficient justification for the complete retrofit of the existing coarse and ultra-coarse flotation cells. Data indicate that the metallurgical results obtained with the full-scale separators are consistent with that obtained during both the bench- and pilot-scale evaluations. The apparent benefits, theory of operation, and commissioning of the equipment are also discussed.

Establishment of the Cadia East Panel Cave Stage One (PC1S1) commenced with the firing of the first bell in early 2011. Production began with the completion of the undercut in May 2014. PC1S1 used a post-undercut composed of 114 drawbells covering a footprint area of 73 438 m². The extraction level is located at a depth of 1200 m below the surface and is based on a 32 × 20 m El Teniente layout. Cave establishment required the construction of multiple conveyor drifts, a large-capacity jaw-gyratory crusher and ancillary ventilation and pumping infrastructure. Preconditioning via hydraulic fracturing and blasting was implemented at various locations of the cave block height. In the United States, chromium has been consumed in three major markets: chemical, metallurgical, and refractory. The predominant end use for chromium in the United States is in the metallurgical market as an alloying element in the production of stainless steel. In addition to being a major stainless steel-producing country, the United States is a major world producer of chromium-containing chemicals and has used substantial amounts of chromite ore for refractory applications. Chromium use is not easily further subdivided within the chemical and refractory industries because there is insufficient publicly available information to do so; however, chromium use can be subdivided among metallurgical industry uses based on the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) reported shipments of stainless steel by market classification (agricultural, aircraft, automotive, etc.). It is the goal of this study to determine the distribution of U.S. chromium apparent consumption among major markets in the United States. The distribution is expressed in the form of dimensionless fractions that are computed based on documented chromium consumption by major market. The distribution of chromium among markets within the metallurgical market is computed in a similar manner. Distribution factors are first computed for the major markets, then for markets that are subdivisions of the metallurgical market. The distribution of chromium among major markets has changed substantially over the time period of analysis. The fraction of chromium consumed by the metallurgical market has increased while that of the chemical and refractory markets has declined. Within the metallurgical market, the service industry market accounts for the greatest fraction of chromium consumption followed by transportation. Electrical, machinery, and fabricated products markets account for a substantial share of the metallurgical chromium consumption.

Keywords: Magnetostriction, magnetic properties, Pd(Fe,Co,Ni) single crystals Fe-Pd, Co-Pd and Ni-Pd alloy systems show appreciable magnetostrictive strains that are of interest for sensor applications. These systems exhibit congruent melting minima. In this work the magnetic and magnetostrictive behavior of congruent melting Fe-Pd, Co-Pd, and Ni-Pd compositions have been examined. The alloys examined include Fe-54.9 at.-% Pd, Ni-45.4 at.-% Pd, and Co-45 at.-% Pd. The paper describes the growth of bulk single crystals of these alloys using Czochralski technique. X-ray diffractometer was used to obtain rocking curves that were used to determine the [001] crystal direction. Magnetostriction in [001] direction was measured using strain gages. Magnetic properties were measured using a vibrating sample magnetometer. Ni-Pd showed the highest magnetostriction values among the congruent melting compositions. Magnetic and magnetostrictive behaviors of these alloy single crystals are presented.

El presente trabajo describe el proceso de optimizacion en la fundición de precipitados de oro y plata en la refinería de la mina Pierina a través del control de los diversos parámetros que involucra dicho proceso. Para ello, se trabajó con composiciones ternarias cercanas al punto peritéctico y asi procesar adecuadamente el tipo de precipitado. Entre sus principales logros de optimización tenemos: el incremento de oro y plata, el rendimiento de los crisoles, la reducción de los costos por consumo de reactivos y el mantenimiento de la calidad del precipitado.

A 16.5-kt/d underground molybdenum mine is being developed at Questa in northern New Mexico by Molycorp Inc., a wholly-owned subsidiary of Union Oil Company of California. The new $200-million underground project will revitalize mining and milling activity at Questa, where small scale underground mining first began in 1920. Large scale open-pit mining was initiated in 1965 but now, because of the high stripping ratio, surface mining is being phased out. Construction of the underground mine began in 1979, and first produc¬tion is scheduled for early 1983. The company expects full capacity-9 Gg of molybdenum per year-to be reached in 1984.

Hydraulic separators are commonly used for particle size classification and gravity concentration of minerals and coal. Unfortunately, the efficiency of these processes can be quite low due to poor equipment design and variations in feed consistency. To help alleviate these problems, an industry-driven R&D program has been undertaken to develop a new generation of hydraulic separators that are more efficient and less costly to operate and maintain. Two of the most promising technologies, the CrossFlow and HydroFloat separators, have now been tested at industrial sites. The data obtained from these sites have been used to illustrate the potential performance improvements that can be realized through the application of these high-efficiency separators.

OVERPOLED copper, as commonly defined, is copper which has been excessively reduced during the poling period of the refining process. Owing to its porosity, such copper is unfit for commercial purposes. The cause of this phenomenon is undoubtedly the lack of oxides in the copper, yet this does not completely explain it. Refined copper of the same "pitch" and "set" varies considerably in oxygen contents, and analyses of overpoled bars also show similar wide differences; moreover, it is possible to melt copper in crucibles so as to obtain bars that are practically free from oxygen although they show a "tough pitch" and "level set" surface. Frederick Johnson advances the following theory: The regulation of the quantity of oxygen in copper is the keynote of all copper refining. It is the presence of a Well defined proportion of oxygen in the form of cuprous oxide, forming a copper-cuprous oxide eutectic, Which enables copper to be cast free from blowholes. It seems that When oxygen is present, other gases are less soluble in molten copper; When oxygen is absent, or is present in insufficient quantity, the copper dissolves other gases, such as hydrogen and carbon monoxide, Which are insoluble in the copper when solid, and, being rejected during the process of solidification, causes internal porosity and external ridges and excrescences.1 The "level set" of Wire bars, etc., is entirely the result of a compromise between the occluded gases and cuprous oxide. With excess of the former the metal would be "overpitch" and spongy, While an excess of the latter would result in the metal being "underpitch" and brittle.2 The result of the absorption and subsequent expulsion of reducing gases, carbon monoxide and hydrogen, and the effect of this action. on the overpoling of copper are in dispute; the literature on the subject is full of contradictory statements and will continue to be so until better analytical methods have been developed. Sulphur, however, is tangible. The refiner can see it in his button sample and consequently attributes to it any trouble that may happen during the melting of the copper.

The Finnish Defence Forces Technical Research Centre (PVTT) studied the effect of shape of boost-er to its ability to ignite insensitive (IM) plastic bonded explosive (PBX). Therefore an explosive fac-tory produced 20 insensitive (IM) plastic bonded explosive (PBX) charges for the tests. The mass of each of the charges was exactly 9.2 kg (20.3 lb). The charges were equipped by two different type of boosters; RDX and PETN. Both the explosives contained some parts of plasticizers. The weight of all the boosters was exactly 300 g (0.66lb). On the bases of their shape, the boosters were also divid-ed into two different groups, cylindrical and “pancake”. In the middle of the “pancakes” there was also shaped a small cone in such away that the detonation could accelerate to its full speed after the charge was ignited. The Bureau of Mines presents an economic evaluation of its leach- electrolysis process for recovering lead from galena concentrate. In this process, galena concentrate is leached at 200° F with a ferric chloride-brine solution to extract lead while leaving sulfur in the residue, which is discarded. The solution after leaching is concentrated and cooled to 100° F by vacuum evaporation to crystallize lead chloride from which metallic lead and chlorine are produced by fused-salt electrolysis. Chlorine is used to regenerate the spent leach solution before it is recycled. A cost estimate was prepared for a plant capable of producing 300 tons per day of lead, 330 days per year. The fixed capital cost on a third-quarter 1977 basis Fs $27,500,000, and the estimated operating cost without a charge for the concentrate is 4.9 cents per pound of lead product. Assuming a selling price for corroding-grade lead of 31 cents per pound and a charge for the concentrate of $332 per ton, the interest rate of return on investment after taxes is 16 percent. The leach-electrolysis process, therefore, appears to be economically attractive under the assumed market conditions.

Microorganisms are directly or indirectly involved in many chemical alterations and in the decomposition of minerals required for their growth. Microbial dissolution of sulfide minerals under acidic conditions can produce over 1,000 times more Acid Rock Drainage (ARD) than chemical action alone. Microbial actions can cause precipitation of minerals, adsorption or release of metals, and formation/destruction of organic-metallic complexes. Soluble minerals can serve as oxidizing substrates, electron donors/acceptors in redox reactions, and can be directly involved in cell metabolism. Microorganisms and microbial oxidation-reduction reactions and their contribution to mineral mobilization and stabilization will be discussed.

Exposure to the microscopic particles in diesel engine exhaust can lead to serious health problems, including the incidence of cancers, heart disease and increased susceptibility to respiratory ailments such as pneumonia, bronchitis, and asthma. In Australia, mining companies and state government authorities are actively responding to this major occupational health and safety issue. Their initiatives place considerable emphasis on routine monitoring of diesel particle matter (DPM) exhaust emissions, both for engine benchmarking and as a part of routine engine maintenance. Implementation strategies follow two complementary paths: determination of individual engines? emission signatures combined with periodic engine re-certification; and co-operatively agreed industry-government engine maintenance programs, which are subject to audit. Both strategies place heavy reliance on real-time measurement of DPM concentrations in engine exhaust, using ruggedized instrumentation, mainly based on laser light scattering photometry. Adding value to this cooperative approach, industry has also collectively funded a government agency to design and manage a database, into which the results of all-routine DPM testing can be uploaded directly by individual mines. This win-win outcome is a great example of how cooperative action between governments and industry can deliver the goods: in this case, a safer working environment, more efficient energy use and the capacity to benchmark performance with industry peers.

The aerospace and automotive industries are facing a significant risk for cumulative trauma disorders from high-repetition, long-duration tasks. Additional risk factors such as shocks, vibrations and sustained uncomfortable postures oftentimes contribute to musculoskeletal, neurological injuries associated with the hand-arm system. The power tools used for the operation reduce the comfort and working efficiency of the operators, thus lowering their health and safety and the quality of operation. This paper investigates the fastening operation on the assembly line of a major aerospace company for quantifying hand-arm vibrations with the objective of developing a dynamic model of the hand-arm system. The model will be used to ascertain the effect of the various risk factors on the quality of the operation. Experiment Setup A system of three tri-axial accelerometers is used to collect vibrations entering the hand-arm system and their positioning follows the ISO-5349 standard. Reaction force during the operation is measured using a force sensor. The posture of the hand-arm system is measured using two goniometers and one torsiometer. The pilot study conducted has two subjects and one pistol-grip power tool. The experiment setup and positions of various sensors is depicted in Figure 1. Overbreak occurred inevitably in a tunnel excavation, is the main factor for increasing cost and period in tunnel projects. Furthermore the damage to the remaining rock mass related to the overbreak can give rise to a serious safety problem in tunnels. As a rule of thumb, causes for the overbreak are inaccuracy in drilling, the wrong design of blasting and selection of explosives, and heterogeneity in rock mass. Specially, the geological features of the rock mass around the periphery of an excavation are very important factors, so a lot of research has been conducted to describe this phenomena. But the geological rockmass classification for the overbreak and the method for decreasing the overbreak have not been fully established. Besides, the technical improvement of the charge method is needed as explosives for the smooth blasting have not functioned efficiently. In this study, the working face around periphery of an excavation has been continuously sectionalized to 5~ 6 parts, and the new Blastability Index for the overbreak based on 6 factors of RMD(Rock Mass Description), UCS(Uniaxial Compressive Strength) JPS(Joint Plane Spacing), JPO(Joint Plane Orientation), JPA(Joint Plane Aperture) and FM(Filling Material) is proposed to classify sections of the working face. On the basis of this classification, the distance between contour holes and the charging density are determined to minimize the overbreak. For controlling the charging density and improving the function of explosives, the New Deck Charge(N.D.C) method utilizing the deck charge effect and detonation transmission in hole has been developed.

Indigenous people are nearly always affected when projects enter their territory. Crop and other asset compensation can help or undermine a project’s progress depending on the approach. When compensation is handled poorly, a technically viable project can get indefinitely entangled by local unrest. Stake holders associated with compensation issues include; the state, the indigenous people, non-governmental organizations, and the developer. Appreciation for the unique perspective of indigenous peoples and the influences affecting them can avert problems and prevent delays. A review of the compensation issues encountered in Ghana during its recent gold boom can assist in avoiding problems associated with handling poor and uneducated people.

A series of engine/dynamometer tests was conducted to assess the effects of three types of uncatalyzed diesel particulate filters (DPFs), a diesel oxidation catalytic converter (DOC) and three types of high temperature disposable filter elements (HT DFEs) on the concentrations and size distribution of diesel aerosols and concentration of nitric oxides in underground mine air. Tests were conducted in the NIOSH Diesel Laboratory at the Lake Lynn Laboratory experimental mine, a facility developed to allow evaluation of these and other control technologies directly in an underground environment. The aforementioned technologies are evaluated by comparing the aerosol and gas measurements in the mine air 60 m downstream of the exhaust from a naturally aspirated, mechanically controlled engine fitted with the tested systems or muffler and operated at four steady-state engine speed and power modes. The tested DPF and HT DFE systems caused a 10-fold reduction in total mass concentrations of aerosols. The size distribution and number concentration measurements showed that all tested DPF systems and HT DFE elements effectively removed accumulation mode aerosols (D50>30 nm) for all test modes. An increase in peak number concentrations of nucleation mode (D50>30 nm) diesel aerosols is evident for some of tested DPF systems when engine was operated at high-load modes. The effects of uncatalyzed DPFs on nitric oxide (NO) and nitrogen dioxide (NO2) concentrations are found to be minor. A four-fold increase in percentages of NO2 in total nitrogen oxides (NOx) over baseline case was observed for the DOC when the engine was operated at high-load modes. The findings from this study should contribute to better understanding the potential for various control technologies to reduce exposure of underground miners to nano and ultrafine aerosols. In addition, detailed physical characterization of diesel aerosols made directly in occupational setting should foster a better understanding of the health risks associated with exposure to nano and ultrafine diesel aerosols.
