Keywords: reduction, kinetics, laterites, rotary kiln, dust In this work, the reduction kinetics of dust from nickeliferous Greek laterites is investigated. The dust is a by-product from laterite treatment in rotary kilns and it comes from washing towers, electrostatic filters and polycyclones. Laboratory made pellets from this dust were also examined. Reducibility was studied in the temperature range of 700°C to 850°C in a laboratory tube furnace. Kinetic analysis of the results showed that at lower temperature values the mixed kinetic model verifies the experimental results of dust and pellet samples. At higher temperatures (800° and 850°C) diffusion becomes the rate controlling mechanism. The calculated activation energy values verify also the above mentioned results.

Many analysts have had difficulty in obtaining accurate and consistent determinations of the volatile matter in low-temperature coke when the usual standard method for coal was followed. The tendency is toward too-high results, due to mechanical losses which are extremely difficult to avoid or control. With cokes there also may be an error due to excessive oxidation of the fixed carbon. Much of the earlier experimental work on the volatile-matter determination in coal, such as that of Parr,5 Fieldner and Davis,6 and others, 7 has been on the effect of time, temperatures, shape and size of crucibles, method of applying heat, and type of furnace, all of which data has evolved the present A.S. T. M.8 standard method for volatile matter in coal and coke. It is not the purpose of this investigation to deal directly with the above phases of the procedure, but rather to study some of the factors affecting she results in those types of fuel which give erroneous results due to mechanical losses.

On June 25, 1999, BHP Billiton (BHPB) announced the suspension of operations at the BHP Copper Inc.(BHP) San Manuel copper mine in Pinal County, Arizona. Subsequent to this announcement, BHPB aggressively pursued a number of alternatives for the underground mine and open pit facilities, including continued curtailed operations, sale to a qualified mining operator and closure of the property. After consideration of these various alternatives over a 2.5-year period, BHPB announced final closure of the mine site on January 15, 2002.This paper describes how the BHPB charter and HSEC policy apply during the closure process.

"The goal of the work was verification of bacterial leaching on the samples of black coal. From the results obtained it was clear that the coal is very well leached by Thiobacillus ferrooxidans and this technology can be used for coal desulphurization. A leaching time of one month is required, to remove 65% of total sulphur and 85% of pyritic sulphur.Microscopic evaluation of samples from Jaworzno showed, that it should be classed as a coal with low coalification, probably from black coal hemiphase. Macerals of the liptinite group were well distinguishable; they were of a dark brown colour. Evidence of coal mass oxidation was apparent on the fresh sample; in the test samples (during bacterial leaching) small grains were oxidised."

With increased stripping ratios and with dwindling ore content, the mining fraternity is increasingly turning to larger and larger equipment for profitable open pit operations. The availability of higher horsepower prime movers and increased-capacity electric transmissions using either wheel-mounted or axle-mounted traction motors makes a reality of single-axle, rear dump trucks having 150 to 250 ton capacity. The size of electric loading shovels is inherently geared to the size of haulage equipment. To work effectively with this new generation of trucks, the Harnischfeger Corporation has introduced its P&H Model 2800 with a capacity of 20 to 25 cu yd and a working weight of nearly 1,500,000 lb. The Model 2800, depicted in Figure 1 loading a 200 ton truck, has many new electric and mechanical features designed to give excellent production and low cost operation. Chief among the new features is the ELECTROTORQUE control system. Electrotorque is a completely static, solid state electronic system supplying controlled power both to the armatures and to the fields of the d-c shovel drive motors. It eliminates many major electrical rotating machines and their attendant maintenance. The system was developed jointly by ASEA of Sweden and Harnischfeger Corp.

The Bureau of Mines conducted underground mapping and rock strength tests to describe and analyze mine roof conditions surrounding ancient stream channel deposits (paleochannels) in the Pittsburgh Coalbed in southwestern Pennsylvania. Paleochannels in the study mine consist of sandstone and/or siltstone and affect the Pittsburgh Coalbed through erosion and/or differential compaction. Differentially compacted sediments within and adjacent to channel deposits caused slip planes, faults, clay-dike faults, clastic dikes (clay veins), coalbed rolls, and slumped structures. Paleochannels can be predicted by recognizing these features and associated sediments, which allows for modification of long-and short-term mine planning and development. Mine entries located beneath the paleochannel deposits exhibit less stable roof conditions than entries with normal (nonchannel) roof. Paleochannel deposits comprise only one-fourth of the mapped study area; however, they contain one-half of the hazardous roof. This study deter-mined that rock strength evaluations, including rock quality designation (RQD), unconfined uniaxial compressive strength testing, and point-load testing, must be accompanied by underground observations. Suggested remedial support techniques include angled and/or longer tensioned bolts, steel mats or crossbars, steel sets or cribbing, and roof trusses.

Backfilling has become an integral process in underground mining operations, with varying cost-effective forms of application. This study is a part of an overall investigation into the backfill practices at Copper Cliff North Mine (CCNM). The mine is well-diversified in terms of backfill methodologies and practices. The mine employs different fill methods such as cemented and un-cemented rock fill, slag fill, and cemented hydraulic fill (or a combination of them) in order to fill the voids created by mining activities. The history of backfilling at CCNM has been dominated by cemented and un-cemented slag fill. Each fill method requires operating and engineering guidelines for a cost effective quality control system. The purpose of this paper is to briefly discuss the backfill methods and applications, operating guidelines, and engineering requirements at CCNM.

A depleted county gravel pit was rehabilitated by contracting an artist to convert it into sculpture, rather than using traditional reclamation methods. The sculptor's ideas were generally implemented as designed, but problems arose because of a faulty survey and severe weather. Public reaction was critical. A design symposium was presented by retaining six artists to prepare designs for varied sites. A public forum was offered and video-documented for broadcast. A new art-reclamation project grew out of this project.

The calculation of the dose to the bronchial epithelium, lungs and other body tissues from exposures to airborne radon and thoron daughters requires a knowledge of the pattern of deposition in the respiratory system and clearance from it. Exposure to radon or thoron daughters is measured in units of Working Level Months (WLM), which is independent of the aerosol particle size, the fraction of daughters that are attached to the aerosol and the degree of disequilibria between the daughters, and age and breathing rate of the subject. These factors will influence the deposition and clearance, and hence dose. It is therefore of interest to find the relationship between WLM and calculated dose as a function of aerosol size, unattached fraction, and disequilibria, and of age and breathing rate, and to define ranges for these parameters for which WLM is an acceptable measure of the risk. This presentation briefly reviews the two dosimetry models being considered by a current Nuclear Energy Agency (OECD) Working Group, and using these models, defines limits on parameters for which the WLM is applicable.

THE mines operated by the South American Development Co. are located in the Zaruma mining district of southwestern Ecuador. They are near the old mining town of Zaruma, which is the only important city in the canton of the same name. The district is situated in the upper end of a valley lying between two spurs of the Cordillera, one of which may be considered the Coast Range and the other an intermediate range. The mining camp proper, known as Portovelo, and the plant are 2.4 km. south of Zaruma, on the north bank of the Amarillo River, a tributary of the Tumbes River, which flows southwestward through Peru to the Pacific. Portovelo is difficult of access; it is reached from Guayaquil by means of river steamers and muleback. Embarking at Guayaquil, the route is down the Guayas River, across the Jambeli Canal, and up the Santa Rosa River to Santa Rosa, a distance of 177 km. From Santa Rosa, the road or trail follows the Santa Rosa River, then across the summit of the Coast Range into Portovelo, a distance of 74 km.-a two-day trip on muleback. The mining property of the South American Development Co. comprises 297 lode claims and 142 placer claims. The combined lode claims cover an area, roughly rectangular in shape, 9000 m. long from north to south by 4000 m. wide; the northern edge of the rectangle is about 3000 m. north of the central plaza of Zaruma. Mineral lands in Ecuador are held by virtue of an annual tax per claim paid to the central government, no surface rights being included.

Morrison (Chairman, Dept. of Mining Engineering and Applied Geophysics, McGill University, Montreal, Que., Canada) - The discing of drill core has been a recognized pressure phenomenon for many years but only recently has an interest been taken in the mechanism involved. The work of Jaeger and Cook is referred to in the text. The authors have now advanced the study to establish, within certain loading limitations, a direct relationship between axial and radial stress at failure. This is an important contribution. In mines generally, where pressure conditions result in the spalling of openings, the faces of drifts and crosscuts, on scaling, usually show a concavity with respect to the opening very similar to the face of the drill hole after the separation of the stub. The same holds for shaft sinks. This suggests a similarity between the mechanism of the discing of core and that of the spalling of an opening, under pressure, to develop a more stable outline. "A methodology is proposed for milling flowsheet design using flotation rate, selectivity and residence time distribution data. The flotation rate data and the difference in flotation rates between the main minerals to be separated are determined from laboratory batch tests. The residence time distribution (RTD) data is calculated using the tanks-in-series model assuming each flotation cell is a perfect reactor. The rate, selectivity and RTD data can be used to calculate the optimum flotation cell number in a bank for rougher/scavenger in a commercial plant.This methodology is demonstrated in a case study of a nickel sulfide ore. It is shown that miniplant rougher/scavenger data can be closely predicted from a batch test using the proposed methodology.INTRODUCTIONIt has been the trend in the past several decades that large flotation cells are increasingly used. This is largely driven by the economics as ore grades are getting lower and the rate of ore processing must be increased in order to keep mining operations economically viable. The development and evaluation of 250 to 500 m3 WEMCO SmartCell and Outokumpu TankCell flotation machines are well in progress. There are many advantages in using large cells: fewer cells, less floor space, lower power cost (although this is now being questioned for fine particle flotation), simpler circuit, simpler control, and lower auxiliary equipment cost (Arbiter, 1999). As flotation cells are getting larger, the importance of cell hydrodynamics, namely, air/slurry dispersion, power intensity, froth transfer, residence time distribution (RTD) and short-circuiting are being fully recognized (Jonaitis, 1999; Weber, et al., 1999; Gomez and Finch, 2002). It is not the intention of this paper to discuss flotation cell scale-up. The intention is to answer what is the optimum number and size of cells in a flotation bank for a given throughput. Figure 1 illustrates this problem facing design engineers. The same mean residence time required for a given throughput can be achieved in a single large cell, or many smaller cells in a row. A few cells of large size may be more cost-effective but they may not be as effective as more cells of smaller size in achieving the optimum metallurgy."

A cooperative study was conducted with Emerald Coal Resources, L.P., an affiliate of Foundation Coal Corporation, and the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) to evaluate the effectiveness of (partially) pre-driven longwall recovery rooms supported with pumpable roof supports. This paper evaluates the load transfer mechanics associated with the advancement of the longwall face into the pre-driven recovery room and the widening of the room to recover the longwall shields. The results show that the yielding of the panel fender produced uncontrollable convergence that caused yielding of the shields and stiff pumpable roof supports when the face was approximately 10 ft from the recovery room. The shields continued to yield until the face advanced into the recovery room. Convergence in the pre-driven recovery room typically reached 6-8 in once the pumpable supports yielded and shed load through a declining residual load capacity prior to being cut out by the longwall shearer. Roof deformations occurred beyond the 32-ft horizon with total deformation ranging from 2 to 4 in, indicating that standing support was necessary to help control the span as the longwall face advanced into the pre-driven recovery room. Stability improved as the pumpable supports were cut out, thereby reducing the span between the shields and the outby pillars. In the end, the shields were successfully recovered under stable ground conditions. However, a disconcerting discovery was the load shedding of the outby pillars as the recovery room was mined into. It is postulated that this may be due to the progression of the rear “abutment” moving toward the recovery room as the panel fender and standing support in the recovery room yield and shed load. This behavior was not expected with a relatively narrow room that is fully supported with standing support. If this mechanism is indeed occurring, the width of the room and performance of the standing support becomes even more critical. Premature failure of the support can lead to excessive convergence on the shield line that cannot be controlled even with modern shields, resulting in roof instabilities that can lead to catastrophic results.

The authors consider the features and advantages of a new promising trend in mineral processing - column flotation. Design aerohydrodynamic and process characteristics of pilot-scale columns are studied. Optimum process parameters for various ores and operations are studied. Flow patterns in cells of various cross-sections are investigated and the relationship between Peclet criterion and specific capacity of cell is determined. On this basis options were developed for optimisation of hydrodynamic characteristics of large capacity cells, including longitudinal sectionalising of the collection zone. It is shown that advantages of high column cells (10 - 13 m) produced in the West can be implemented in a sectionalised machine of smaller height (5 - 6 m). Investigations on the influence of slurry and air bubbles flow patterns indicated that to increase flotation rate of particles of various flotabilities it is expedient to combine co- and counter-current flows of phases in a single column. The proposed designs allow tailings to repeatedly return tailings to the collection zone and alternate co- and counter-current slurry and air flows. For the first time columns with alternating slurry flows (combination of co- and counter-current flows) are developed and commercialised. Unique multi-sectional cells having a number of essential advantages compared to monocells are developed. Design features of the cell allow: implementation of different flotation process flowsheets in a single unit, improved beneficiation process results, reduced specific power requirement, and elimination of sludging of the aerator and cell bottom part. Operational problems restricting introduction of column cells are connected with the aeration unit. The new cells are supplied with pneumohydraulic and stepped airlift spargers, allowing control of bubble size distribution with a service life of not less than three years. Successful operation of the new generation of columns with cell volumes of 15, 25, 40, and 80 cu m and the height of 5 - 6 m in copper, molybdenum, antimony, tungsten and nickel ores and coal slurry processing at different plants in this country illustrated their considerable process and operational advantages and verified the proposed options and relationships. A simulation technique of the flotation process and models for the solution of various problems are developed. A modular model of column flotation is constructed taking into account the kinetic relationship of the process and the hydrodynamic regime in the cell. Based on this, a technique of calculating the column parameters based on laboratory tests is developed (scaling-up), and applied for calculating the design of commercial-scale columns is developed.

Impala Platinum?s No.16 Shaft mine is currently under construction and is expected to reach full production of 256 500 tons per month by 2014. Mining will start at 1 260 m below surface with a maximum mining depth of 1 535 m where virgin rock temperatures of 56.6°C will be experienced. As a result of depth, high virgin rock temperature and narrow reef mining, an expected total of 31.5 MW[R] of air cooling capacity will be required to achieve acceptable underground conditions. This will be achieved by cooling mine intake air in a single dedicated air cooling installation located on surface. The compact installation includes air cooling spray chamber, refrigeration machines, condenser cooling towers, evaporator and condenser water reticulation as well as all electrical and control systems. Construction and commissioning of the first phase of this air cooling installation has recently been completed on a turn-key contract basis.

Gas explosion in underground coal workings can pose a serious threat to the safety of mine workers and the entire mine operations. Gas explosion is a very complex thermal-chain reaction in a confined underground environment. Based on combustion and explosion theory, three dimensional (3D) computational models were developed to simulate mine gas explosion flame and overpressure wave propagation in a single entry gateroad in underground coalmines. Six different explosion scenarios were modelled and compared with large scale experimental results and AutoReaGas simulations. Model validations show that the use of shear-stress transport (SST) k-? model together with eddy-dissipation model (EDM) produces good agreement with both experimental and AutoReagas simulation results. Modelling results demonstrated that the changes of temperature versus time can be divided into four stages, ie the initial condition stage, and periods of warm-up, active burning, and burnt-out. Assuming a limited volume of methane is involved in the explosion, the maximum temperature decreases as the distance increases from the explosion point, with the highest temperature reaching about 2460 K. Modelling results show that the evolution of the explosion flame shape experiences four typical stages, ie spherical flame, finger-shape flame, flame with the skirt touching the side walls (ribs) and tulip flame, which are similar to the pattern of a duct explosion. The pressure in the gateroad remains the same as the initial value before the arrival of the explosion wave and then increases rapidly to the maximum value. As globalization continues, sustainability and social responsibility has become essential in foreign mining investment. However this global trend and the increasing acceptability toward the globalization process, viability and sustainability are not always achieved. Viability and sustainability of mineral projects is dependant on the social and political environment of the region where the mining venture is located and is based on the interaction between the mining entrepreneurs, national-local government representatives, communities, grass-roots groups and independent civil organizations. These are the organizations, which play the acting roles on the viability of mining projects and are the main source of socio-political risks for the project. Throughout the decision-making process to invest in a mineral project, socio-political risks are quantified using a set of measurable variables. Nevertheless, these risk measures should be dependent on specific industries. Two mineral projects, even in the same mining district, may have significantly different political risk profiles based on their own socio-political variables. This paper describes a methodology that takes into account local social and political variables in defining a project-specific’s political risk profile. This contrasts with more typical political risk measures that focus on the country’s overall risk profile. Mining operations must operate on a local scale necessitating the development measure that considers more local variables.

To simplify programming, image analyzers commonly measure either linear intercepts or the areas of particles and grains to determine liberation based on polished section mounts. However, the concentration of minerals by flotation is based on reagents that interact with the exposed surfaces of the minerals. Thus, it is often perceived that image analyzers should measure the perimeter of the mineral of interest in the ore particles. A comparative liberation study of thirteen samples collected from a flotation plant processing a complex base metal sulfide ore showed that the liberation of the ore minerals determined by area measurements is very similar to the liberation determined by the exposed perimeters. The liberation determined by exposed perimeters is more appropriate only for those cases where the mineral texture is so complex that it is retained in the small particles generated in conventional grinding operations.

"Biotechnological approaches to decommissioning of mine waste management areas are presented in the context of sustainable environmental management. Improved design of waste sites and environmental management paves the way for the application of new technological approaches. Mining wastes are better confined, effluent quantity is reduced and the quality is expected to improve in the future. The biologically mediated treatments focus on the creation of conditions inside the waste management area which lead to the confinement of the contaminants in the inactive tailings ponds and seepage collection ponds, as well as pits or other disturbed areas which were part of the operating conditions.Biogeochemical reactions lead to three fundamental water treatment steps mediated biogeochemically , alterations in chemistry which lead to formation of particles, which then have to flocculate and be assisted to collect in the bottom of the ponds. Microbially active sediments are installed to assist particulate formation and serve as sinks for metals. In deeper sediment strata, stable forms of metals are created. Biological polishing is used to collect the particulates and relegate them to the sediment. Examples will be given of the application of these processes, to waste rock piles, open pits and tailings ponds. This paper attempts to show that, through the integration of applied biotechnological advances and the application of new approaches to decommissioning, reductions of environmental impacts by mining are possible. * Note: this paper has been presented at the 13th Annual Meeting of BIOMINETIntroductionThe role of biotechnology in decommissioning of mining waste management areas should be placed in the context of sustainable development.
