Tri-axial strains in pillars, created by pillar robbing, were measured in an experiment at the Dysart No. 1 uranium mine near Grants) New Mexico. At this mine, room-and-pillar stoping is used on the advance, and pillars are recovered on the retreat. The are deposit is, for all practical purposes, horizontal. Measuring devices were installed in pillars approximately 90 to 200 feet from the break line, and strains were recorded over a 4-to 6-week period. The measurements indicate that, in general, the algebraic magnitude of vertical strains increased, and the horizontal strains decreased, in turn, indicating that vertical (or near vertical) loads on the instrumented pillars lessened as pillars were recovered.

The Harts Range deposit, owned by Olympia Resources is located some 130 kms northeast of Alice Springs, in central Australia (part of Australia’s Northern Territory). The core economic minerals here are industrial grade garnet and alumino magnesio hornblende (AMH). The resource contains an estimated 2.3 million tonnes of recoverable garnet and 6.2 million tonnes of recoverable AMH, making Harts Range one of the most significant abrasive medium deposits in the world. Part of the general marketing axiom of Olympia Resources is to make high quality products from the garnet and also a special series of blended garnet/AMH products to match the needs for other sectors of industry. The deposit mineralization is of alluvial origin and thus, requires no significant liberation regimes. Over 50% of the head feed is in the form of SiO2/quartz and as much as 17% is –63micron clay slimes and mica. Original pilot scale testwork for flowsheet development centred around fairly conventional wet gravity systems, with spiral concentrators being the pre-eminent separating device. To a point, this type of flowsheet was going to achieve some of the aims albeit fairly predictably. The one area that this circuit would be very limited though is in the recovery of the very coarsest of the medium SG minerals. This was going to be a very important and longer-term costly flaw. Amongst the highest demand, greatest value of products to be produced will be the range of garnet & AMH in the +600 microns sector. A flowsheet dominated by spirals would be fated to forfeit a significant proportion of these coarse minerals to tails. At the Outokumpu Technology P/L test facilities in Perth, testwork was conducted using a pilot scale Floatex® Density Separator, the LPF-230 model. Using a twin stage approach, whereby a primary Floatex® underflow reports directly to a secondary Floatex®, recovery of the economically important +600 micron garnet was increased from 65% in the spirals-only flowsheet to 95% using the Floatex® based flowsheet. Finally, the other significant aspect of this approach is in substantial simplification of the circuit required and a huge reduction in plant footprint. Also, the nature of using hindered settling provides substantial opportunities for process control and automation.

Iran's petroleum industry is nearly 50 years old and the oldest in the Near East. According to published figures, Iran ranks third in production and reserves in the Near East. These reserves (including probable reserves) are estimated at 35 billion barrels and constitute about 11 percent of the world's total. Iran is the sixth largest producer of crude petroleum in the world. The 1961 output of more than 430 million barrels was 5 percent of total world output for the year. In the same year, Iran ranked fourth among world petroleum exporters, providing 8.4 percent of total world exports.

The increased obsolescence rate of electronic products has made it evermore pertinent to understand the potential environmental impact of materials choices to help guide electronic waste (e-waste) management and promote awareness of high burden materials. Methods for screening for the performance of materials and their potential burden on human health and the environment can be used to comparatively select constituents of present and prospective electronic products. These methods should be able to yield more robust information when linked to other decision-making strategies where integrated data on consumer preferences, production quantities, and regulatory initiatives are sparse or unavailable. A framework is presented here for generating metrics of ecological toxicity, human health toxicity (cancer and non-cancer categories) and global resource consumption for evaluating environmental impact of materials (specifically metals) in electronic products. This study estimates costs of producing bituminous coal and lignite by strip-mining methods in 12 hypothetical mines. Basic costs are developed by geographic area, rank of coal, and output capacity. Seam thickness and depth and type of overburden are considered typical for the area in which the hypothetical mine would be located. The cost analyses are based on the use of new equipment, the prevailing union wage scales, and the payment of all miscellaneous costs including royalties, contributions to the miners' welfare fund, and license and permit fees. All model mines are considered to have a life span of 20 years. Capital costs of bituminous strip mines with a capacity of 1 million tons per year range from $12.7 million in the Appalachian region to $16.0 million in the Interior province. The corresponding selling price, assuming a discounted cash flow return of 12 percent on investment, is $5.40 and $6.95 per ton, respectively. For bituminous coal strip mines producing 3 million tons annually, a capital investment of $24.9 million will render a selling price of, $3.46 per ton in the Interior province, whereas a similar mine in the Appalachian region requires a capital investment of $28.0 million to produce coal selling for $4.01 per ton. Subbituminous strip mines of 5 million tons of output per year range in capital costs from $28.7 million in the Southwest to $13.9 million in Wyoming and Montana. Coal produced in the Southwest would sell for $3.03 per ton, while coal from Wyoming and Montana would sell for $1.83 and $1.64 per ton, respectively. The capital costs for the strip mining of lignite range from $6.4 million for an output capacity of 1 million tons annually to $20.7 million for an annual capacity of 5 million tons. The corresponding selling prices of $3.01 and $2.12 per ton, respectively, Indicate the advantages of a large-capacity strip mine.

This paper examines some of the fundamental economics of mining - in particular, for optimisation studies, for production rate determination and for reserve estimates.It includes introductory discussion on the principles as to how economics drives mining investment decision-making, applicable to the optimising of pit shapes and production, or truck fleets, or any other part of the mine.The main part of this paper looks at the decision to start-up a mine and why the 'optimum' production rate to start-up a mine is not the point of lowest cost according to traditional discounted cash flow (DCF) analysis. The optimum production rate is usually substantially less than this rate. The paper recognises the difference between typical mining investments and investments in other industries that do not have the unique characteristics of mining and the problem of uncertainty resolution. It examines the marginal revenue effects, the marginal cost of capital and the value of a real option to expand pending uncertainty resolution as determinants of optimum initial production rates.The final part of this paper looks at applying these principles to renewable and non-renewable resources. It examines mine life and reserve estimates from an economic perspective.

Zinc oxide nanoparticles and nanostructures form an active area of research in the recent years. It can be doped to modify electronic, optical and other properties. Synthesis and characterization of zinc oxide is of extreme importance in order to understand the structure property relationship in this material which is now being considered of importance next to carbon nanotubes. Microstructure of zinc oxide nanomaterial is extremely sensitive to the preparation conditions. Nanocrystalline pure and Mn and Mg doped zinc oxide samples were prepared by wet-chemical method under different growth conditions. The samples were investigated for crystalline phase, microstructure, morphology and luminescence characteristics. The effect of Mn and Mg doping on the characteristics of ZnO have been discussed.

In different parts of the world the term epithermal is commonly used for a variety of deposit styles. Using the redox state of the ore-forming fluid (inferred from mineralogy and alteration), the metal assemblage of deposits, and other characteristics, at least five different styles of epithermal deposit can be distinguished. Most of these different deposit styles appear to be related to magmatic fluids, with differences resulting from different compositions of source magmas. The most common style of epithermal deposit (low-sulfidation gold-silver deposits associated with calc-alkaline volcanic rocks) remains the most difficult to explain; the metals in these deposits may be derived by basement leaching without magmatic input, or they may come from magmatic volatiles, with contaminated I-type or S-type magmas as the most likely source.

The investigation of mine shafts and underground workings at Leadville, Colo., was started in May 1946 and recessed in November 3, 1946. Thirty-eight shafts and connecting accessible underground workings, comprising about a third of the accessible shafts in the district, were investigated. The Leadville district, a former important producer of lead and zinc, was considered by the Bureau of Mines to be capable of bolstering 'the waning domestic output of .these important metal. Accordingly, the investigation was initiated for the purpose of. .obtaining more definite data on sulfide and oxide reserves, evidence to justify completion of the Leadville drainage tunnel, representative large samples of the complex oxidized and mixed ores for testing to determine methods, beneficiation factual data to be supplied to property owners in order to stimulate production, and to determine the more favorable areas for development by the Bureau.

"Several plant studies have been conducted at the Zinifex Century Mine over the past 5 years. For each of the plant studies, surveys of the zinc primary circuit were conducted, characterisation measurements for each operating cell taken, and the floatability components of the ore mapped to develop a model of the circuit. The floatability components and machine parameters were then used to simulate changes in circuit configuration and operating conditions, enabling further potential improvements in circuit performance to be identified.This paper reviews the current flotation practice at the mine, as well as various circuit changes and developments implemented by site. The application of the methodology and the evolution of the standard procedure are also discussed.INTRODUCTIONBase metals were first discovered in the Lawn Hill region of Queensland’s North West in 1869 and the first mining lease in this area was pegged in 1887 over what is now known as the Silver King vein deposit. The area encompassing these veins, which includes the Century deposit, was proclaimed the Burketown Mining Field in 1899. Exploration titles were granted to CRA in 1987, precisely 100 years after the initial discovery at Silver King, hence the name ‘Century’.Century was commissioned by Pasminco in late 1999, with the mine becoming fully operational on 1 March 2000 and the official opening taking place in April. Pasminco had bought the Century and Dugald River deposits from CRA in 1997 for A$345 million, and invested some A$710 million in bringing Century into production. Today, Century is the world’s second-largest zinc mine in terms of its output, having reached full capacity in 2003.The Zinifex Century Limited (“ZCL”) lead-zinc-silver deposit is located approximately 250 kms north-north west of Mt Isa in north-western Queensland. The deposit is a large flat-lying ore body covering an area of some 1.2 by 1.4 km, the 45 m-thick stratabound sulphide orebody is hosted within an 850 m-thick sequence of Proterozoic siltstone, shales and sandstone, amenable to open-cut mining methods. The mine has ramped up to full production delivering five and a half million tonnes of ore per annum, yielding approximately 900,000 tonnes of zinc concentrate and 90,000 tonnes of lead concentrate. Separation Technologies, LLC (ST) has developed a processing system based on triboelectric charging and electrostatic separation that provides the mineral processing industry a means to beneficiate fine materials with an entirely dry technology. The environmentally friendly process can eliminate wet processing and required drying of the final material. The process requires little if any pre-treatment of the material other than grinding and operates at high capacity ? up to 45 tonnes per hour by a compact machine. Energy consumption is low, approximately 1 kWh/tonnes of material processed. Since the only potential emission of the process is dust, permitting is typically relatively easy. In contrast to the other available electrostatic separation processes that are typically limited to particles greater than 75 µm in size, the ST belt separator is ideally suited for separation of very fine (<1 µm) to moderately coarse (500 µm) materials with very high throughputs. The triboelectric particle charging is effective for a wide range of materials and only requires particle ? particle contact. The small gap, high electric field, counter current flow, vigorous particle-particle agitation and self-cleaning action of the belt on the electrodes are the critical features of the ST separator. The high efficiency multi-stage separation through charging / recharging and internal recycle results in far superior separations and is effective on fine materials that cannot be separated at all by the conventional electrostatic techniques. Since 1995, this triboelectric process has been extensively used for the beneficiation of coal fly ash with eighteen separators in place and over 100 machine-years of operation at locations in the US and Europe. The technology has been also successfully applied to the beneficiation of a variety of minerals including calcium carbonates, talc, and potash.

"The exploration of seamounts south of the Azores during the EMEPC/Açores/G3/2007 campaign allowed for the collection of 30 Fe-Mn crusts from the Atlantis, Great Meteor, Small Hyeres, Irving and Plato seamounts, as well as from the East Azores Fracture Zone. These were the first samples of Fe-Mn crusts studied from these seamounts. The Fe-Mn crusts were analyzed using multiple analytical methods.The crusts are fairly homogeneous, showing typical textures for this type of occurrences. The Fe/Mn ratio, patterns and concentrations in rare earth elements, and the great homogeneity of the crusts lead to the conclusion that they have a hydrogenetic origin, precipitating directly from seawater. Although the content in Fe and Mn of the crusts is consistent with data available for the Atlantic, the mean concentration of Co is comparable to the average values for the Pacific. Cu and Ni show lower values than the ones known for the Pacific."

Improved skips, with lightweight cylindrical bodies, have made a significant contribution to advancing mine hoisting technology. New concept skips of aluminum bodies with rubber lining; fiberglas bodies with polyurethane liners have been designed and fabricated for field testing at an operating mine. New design, adjustable guide rollers have shown improved ride characteristics with noticeably less wear. Major reductions have been made in stress levels and stress concentrations. Field experience has shown the practicality of the approach. Guide alignment has been measured using the Guide Alignment Measuring System (GAMS). Analysis has been applied to interpret the data. Field measurements in an operating shaft and a test tower have shown the agreement in data from GAMS and plumb wires. Reproducibility has been demonstrated. The data are useful to realign shafts, to use as s maintenance tool, and to evaluate the maximum safe hoisting speeds. The surveys are made at several hundred feet per minute and the system is self-contained. Dynamics of skip-guide interaction has been analyzed using the computer program SKIP II. The effects of speed, weight, type of guides, kind of misalignment have been studied. Resonance has been demonstrated and factors that eliminate resonance have been identified. Data from the GAMS surveys are applicable to the SKIP II program. Interaction between the hoist rope and the mine conveyance has also been studied. Computer programs and closed-form solutions are presented. Economic impact of lightweight skips is presented for an existing mine and for a new mine. Reduction in rope size has a profound effect when using a lightweight skip for the same capacity. Increased productivity can be realized by keeping maximum rope pull the same while increasing skip capacity. Examples and charts project the significant savings in capital expenditure for new installations.

History and performance data of 17 water-injection projects in Cooke and Grayson Counties in north Texas are presented for the purpose of studying and comparing operating practices and oil-recovery techniques. Water is injected into Strawn and Canyon sands of Pennsylvanian age. The principal formation flooded is the Strawn, which ranges in depth from 725 to 6,900 ft in the projects covered. Estimated ultimate recoveries range as follows: Primary, 22 to 494 bbl per acre ft; and secondary; 63 to 296 bbl per acre ft. These figures represent the following percentages of original oil in place: Primary, 10 to 46 pct; and secondary, 8 to 23 pct. Shallower projects; 725 to 1,500 ft in depth, had higher average primary and secondary recoveries than did deeper projects. Crude-oil gravity, which ranges from 20° to 45° API, was not relatable to yield of secondary recovery oil. Analysis of the data indicates that five-spot injection patterns will yield the highest percentage of oil remaining at start of flooding; that is, 28.8 pct for five-spot injection patterns, compared with 20.8 pct for line-drive patterns and 11.6 pct for random patterns. Waterflooding in this area appears to be very successful. Secondary recoveries of most projects are expected to nearly equal primary recoveries.

The stoping of platinum orebodies in the Bushveld has in the past been accomplished by using in-stope pillars to ensure stability of the workings. In the future, the use of continuous mining machines to mine the platinum orebodies is probable. It is not envisaged that such machines will cut in-stope pillars. This paper describes the alternative support systems that will replace the pillars and the stope geometries that will be required for this type of mining. The paper describes how the support resistance provided by in-stope pillars in current mining was determined and then evaluates support systems that can substitute for these pillars. Conceptual layouts based on existing breast mining layouts are presented. The layouts consist of panels of up to 100 m face length between rigid strike stabilizing pillars. A number of design charts are then proposed that allow for the design of appropriate support systems.

"Tintaya’s basic production line is copper concentrate, which has an important gold content. The process used is flotation; the objective of the metallurgical department is to obtain the best results in the copper recovery without neglecting the gold, using very specific reagents. Copper recoveries are considered high, nevertheless every day emphasis is placed upon increasing those recoveries. Regarding gold, optimum recoveries could not be achieved with flotation; and implementation of a gravity circuit was considered.According to microscopy studies, the coarse and very fine grains of gold in native form are lost to tails. The native gold due to its high specific gravity is concentrated at the underflow of the cyclone, remaining in the circulating load of the circuit. It reaches three times the concentration compared to the head grade entering the ball mills. This re-circulation generates very fine and laminated gold particles inside the ball mill, passing to the classification stage making a short circuit to the overflow of the cyclone.The very coarse gold particles as well as the thick flakes of gold do not react favorably to the conventional flotation process; thus studies that have included gravity separation have been conducted to increase the gold recovery. Part of the research included concentrating tables, jigs, and Knelson Concentrators. The Knelson Concentrator proved to be the best selection in terms of metallurgical performance and recoveries considering the throughput and operation conditions of the Tintaya Plant.The gravity concentration circuit with the Knelson Concentrator was commissioned in BHP Tintaya in October 1998, as per the flowsheet shown later on. Presently the global gold production surpasses any estimated expectations.Present efforts are directed towards showing the evaluation and optimization of the different parameters that govern the performance of the Knelson concentrator, as well as illustrating the difficulties and successes throughout the operating period.In the first year of operation 200 tons of gold concentrate have been produced with an average concentrate grade of 320 gramdton, having paid back in full the cost of the automated KC-XD- 48 Knelson Concentrator, the peripheral equipment, and the cost of the installation."

ZINIFEX Century Mine is a zinc, lead and silver concentrate producer. Flotation is the primary method of minerals separation in this circuit. The flotation circuit is quite large with 79 flotation cells. The levels in each of these interconnected cells are controlled at more than 45 level control stations. Due to the multivariable interaction throughout the circuit, good level control was found to be difficult to achieve by just using normal Proportional-Integral-Derivative (PID) control. As a first step in advanced process control, the FloatStar Level Stabiliser, a multivariable controller developed specifically for flotation circuits, has been commissioned at Century mine to solve the level control problems. The first section of this paper therefore discusses and shows the results and improvements obtained by using the FloatStar level stabiliser. The results and benefits of the FloatStar Flow Optimiser are discussed in the second section of this paper.

For over a decade the Osterberg Load Cell has been successfully used to determine the shear capacities of drilled shafts. Since the test method measures side shear directly, analytical complications due to the influence of end bearing resistance are removed. The data suggest that the side shear component of a drilled shaft&apos;s capacity is often more significant than end bearing. Given the interest in the use of side shear in drilled shaft design in compressible materials, it is important to examine factors that can influence capacity. We have found that some factors widely believed to influence capacity, such as slurry type, are not as important as commonly thought in most materials. Factors that are not usually considered as important, such as casing use, hoop spacing, concrete slump, concrete additives, spacers and rebar clear cover, seem to be more influential with respect to side shear capacity. For example, substantially lower than predicted shear resistance can occur when the rebar clear cover is small with respect to the cage diameter. We observe this most often in fine-grained cohesive soils. This effect can be exaggerated if the rebar cage has tight hoop spacing, if the concrete has low slump and if the hole is not straight. We have also noted that improper use of temporary casing can have a dramatic effect on side shear resistance. In some cases we have observed tested shear capacities reduced to less than 5% of either predicted or available shear values.

Since the Hardy Cross numerical algorithm was applied to the solution of mine ventilation networks, there have been numerous developments in ventilation network analysis procedures. The Newton-Raphson method, the linear theory method, and the second-order approximation method are three of the additional approaches that have been applied. The efficiency of a ventilation network analysis procedure depends not only on the method of solving the system of equations derived from ventilation networks, but also on the method of deriving the equations through selection of the meshes. This paper investigates the impacts of three mesh selection methods on the efficiencies of four ventilation network procedures. The minimum-resistance spanning tree method is the most popular procedure for selecting meshes. The shortest-path method was suggested by Epp and Fowler (1970) for improvement of the Newton-Raphson method. The minimum-resistance-path method is suggested here as the third method of selecting meshes. The effects of these three methods on the Hardy Cross method, the Newton-Raphson method, the linear theory method, and the second-order approximation method are analyzed in this paper. These network analysis methods have been summarized in the paper by Kim and Mutmansky (1991).

The studies previously made on Smelting in the Lead Blast Furnace have dealt with the custom smelter of the International Smelting Co. at Tooele, Utah,4 and on the smelter of the Bunker Hill & Sullivan Mining & Smelting Co.5 at Kellogg, Idaho. The International plant may be considered representative of the traditional custom smelter. The lead smelter of the future seemingly will have to treat increasingly richer lead charges. This feature was then stressed in describing the Bunker Hill plant.
