The Bureau of Mines is developing a new technological approach to handling the problems of fires in abandoned coal mines and waste banks. This new technology involves the accelerated combustion of "waste" coals in place (i.e., in situ) under controlled exhaust ventilation conditions, which allows for total management of the combustion products; including utilization of the heat produced" This new concept could significantly lower the costs of reducing the environmental and public safety hazards associated with waste coal fires, and could lead to the conversion of a coal waste to a coal resource. The controlled burnout technology has progressed from the laboratory stage to a full-scale field evaluation stage at the site of an abandoned-coal-mine fire. This first report describes the site selection, evaluation, and preparation, and the design and construction of the full-scale controlled burnout installation. Subsequent reports will deal with the results of the operational field trial.

The treatment plant at The Great Boulder Proprietary Gold Mines Limited was designed and erected by Chas. Ruwolt Proprietary Limited in 1934 to mill 12,000 short tons per month. The flow sheet called for fine grinding, straking, flotation, roasting of the flotation concentrates and cyanidation of the resulting calcine.In 1937 considerable alterations and additions were made to the plant. The grindin,g section was duplicated with addition of two 8 ft. x 6 ft. Abco Ball Mills to increase the throughput to 28,000 tons per month, and the flow sheet was changed from "straight flotation" to "precyanidation and flotation" neeessitating the addition of thickeners, agitators, Oliver filters and Edwards roasters.A further change to the flow sheet was made in 1942 with the introduction of sulphur dioxide conditioning ahead of the flotation section, to permit the treatment of 500,000 tons of oxidised ore. Since that date no major alterations were made to the flow sheet or equipment until 1950, when the modifications set out in this paper were commenced with the object of reducing costs and increasing plant efficiency.These modifications are dealt with under the section headings and are therefore not necessarily in chronological order.CRUSHING SECTIONThere has been no material alteration in this section although at the time of writing a 650 ton capacity ore bin is being erected ahead of the primary Jaques crusher. On April 1, 1982, the Bureau of Mines and the Department of Energy entered into an Interagency Agreement to develop an enhanced computer cost model for uranium in situ leach mining. The original computer cost model contained data base information related to two regions; the Wyoming basin region and the South Texas trend area. The enhanced cost model contains additional information on San Juan Basin type deposits. This addition is significant because it expands the model's capabilites to include one of the largest uranium producing areas in the United States and developes costs related to uranium production from in situ leach mining. The data base was expanded and modified to include changes necessary for San Juan basin type deposits. These changes included, but were not limited to, state and local taxes, royalty payments, depth of deposits, drilling costs, and electrical costs. Also site visits were taken to verify many of the base case parameters. Consequently, the data base has been incorporated into the computer program and existing software was modified to provide for the additional data. Information was obtained on drilling coats and therefore the current program more accurately reflects these costs to depths of 2500 feet. This depth parameter has been expanded to include Wyoming Basin and South Texas scenarios also. Verbal communications were held with one operator in the Crownpoint, New Mexico area as well as the state regulatory agencies to help validate the expanded model. As a result of these changes, several tables have been included, summarizing changes in the new default parameters and the overall range of input parameters.

The research described in the paper was aimed at providing standardized information of cases of failed and intact coal pillars in the form of databases to researchers. It also offered the opportunity to take stock of the pillar stability situation in coalmining and to review the impact of the application of the safety factor formula for pillar design. It was found that the physical parameters of coalmining have not changed substantially over the last four decades. However, changes in the controllable parameters like pillar width, pillar width-to-height ratio and percentage extraction have all moved toward the more conservative side. Scrutiny of the database indicates that of all the failures recorded, only 23 occurred in panels that were mined after 1969, when one can assume that the safety factor formula was fully applied. If the pre-1969 practices had been continued, at least 144 collapses would have been expected. There has thus been a substantial reduction of pillar collapse cases, justifying the cost paid for the formula, which has shown to be in the region of 600 million tons of coal. It is evident that that are distinct differences in the natures of the failures among different coalfields. This justifies the attempts to derive seam or coal field specific strength formulae and is a topic that should be pursued.

This paper presents a novel methodology for the hydraulic design of mine backfill distribution systems. The ?operating range? method uses the concepts of the hydraulic grade line and equivalent pipe length to determine flows and pressures as the pipeline route and static head change over the life of the mine. The operating range method is easy to learn because it is semi-graphical and uses well-known design concepts (e.g., the hydraulic grade line) and slurry design models (e.g., the Durand deposition velocity model). However, by changing the paradigm in which these concepts are used, the operating method allows all potential pipeline cases to be analysed simultaneously without the need to know the exact pipe routing. It also allows the hydraulics engineer to quickly identify ?pinch points? and ?slack flow? zones, to estimate the effect of changing the size or length of any given section of pipe, to assess the impact of changing the material properties of the backfill slurry, to size the slurry pumps, and to size and locate rupture discs when required.

This paper reviews rehabilitation, closure, and post-closure management of the Tui, Golden Cross, and Martha Mines, all of which are located in the Waikato Region of New Zealand. There was no requirement for rehabilitation of the Tui mine, which was abandoned in 1973. There was a requirement to rehabilitate the Golden Cross mine. Mining at that site ceased in 1997, and rehabilitation is now well advanced. When first approved, there were some requirements for rehabilitation of the Martha Mine, but when reconsented in 1998, those were extended, and in addition a requirement for post-closure management was included. As a result, a Trust, funded by the mining company, has been established to take long-term responsibility for the site following completion of closure. The different rehabilitation/closure requirements at each of these sites illustrates that we have learnt something from the experiences of the past.

A conventional trailing cable connection box on a continuous mining machine was modified by the addition of two innovative devices. These are a pressure vent to preclude buildup of high pressure due to an explosion in-side the enclosure, and a grommet-type cable entry to simplify and speedup cable entering procedures. The innovative devices were evaluated for eight and one-half months in a working section of an underground coal mine. Laboratory tests before and after the in-mine exposure show no measurable change in the devices. Following the favorable in-mine evaluation, technical performance criteria were defined to serve as the basis of approval for the use of the innovative devices. Additional tests to measure comparable gripping of the cable by asbestos rope, substitution rope materials and by the urethane grommet-type entry were included in this effort. Also, literature for the last 80 years was searched. Comments are provided as to how the innovative devices comply with 30 CFR Part 18.

DURING the past 25 years, mining engineers have seen the development of a multitude of specialized engineering curricula in the mineral industry field. Bachelor degrees are now !ranted in the fields of mineral dressing petroleum engineering, geological engineering, fuel technology, and many others. These fields were all, previously considered to be part of a mining enginieer's work and elementary phases of them were included in mining engineering curricula. Their emergence has left some mining engineers with the fear that nothing will he left for a purely mining engineer to teach, or that mining engineering graduates will be unable to complete in any of these fields with the more specialized students and thus will have neatly restricted employment opportunies. A secondary reaction has been that if students who began to say that the pining engineering curriculum taught everything but mining, since so many of :he subjects that had always been udedAuded in the mining engineering curriculum now were fields in their own right.

"In 2010, closure of the Kidd metallurgical plants along with structural changes to the historical ratios of payable metals led to a review of the operating targets at the Kidd concentrator. Previous operating data indicated that there was potential for significant revenue improvements by lowering the copper concentrate grade. An extended plant trial was carried out in 2011 to quantify the revenue impact of lowering the copper concentrate grade from 27% to 25% Cu, as well as identifying the lower practical grade limit. Analysis of plant trial results indicated that the process change increased net concentrate revenue by $2 M to $3 M per year at current metal prices. Increased revenue was primarily associated with higher silver recovery to the copper concentrate while the marginally improved copper recovery was essentially offset by increased zinc losses and concentrate treatment and freight charges.Details of the plant test work results are discussed in this paper along with the financial analysis of the revenue improvements. Key areas covered are major revenue components of the concentrate contracts, validation of revenue improvements through plant testing and sensitivity of the improvements to market and plant variables.INTRODUCTIONThe Xstrata Copper Kidd concentrator commenced operations in 1966 treating ore from the nearby Kidd volcanogenic massive sulphide deposit in Timmins, Ontario (Thompson, Amsden, & Chapman, 1978). Over the years, up to four separate grinding-flotation divisions were in operation with throughput rates peaking at 4.5 million tonnes per year of ore in the mid 1980’s (Kelebek & Francis, 1998). As the mine production decreased and grinding throughput increased operations were gradually cut back and since 1998 two grinding-flotation divisions have been in operation treating Kidd mine ore. One of the idled divisions has been intermittently used for custom milling operations, most recently the Ni/Cu Montcalm deposit, which was milled from 2004 to 2009. Current budget throughput rates, limited by mine production, are 2.4 million tonnes per year of ore grading 1.7% Cu, 4.3% Zn and 55 g/mt Ag. Concentrate production rates are 150,000 tonnes per year of copper concentrate and 155,000 tonnes per year of zinc concentrate. The Kidd mine is the deepest base metal mine in the world with mining operations down to 9600 ft.In 2010 the copper and zinc plants at the Kidd metallurgical site, which previously treated the concentrate production from the Kidd concentrator, ceased operation due to a variety of economic and market factors. Following the metallurgical plant closures the Kidd concentrator products were shipped off site for treatment. The majority of the copper concentrate is now processed at the Xstrata Copper Horne smelter in Rouyn-Noranda, Quebec with the majority of the zinc concentrate processed at Canadian Electrolytic Zinc Ltd. in Valleyfield, Quebec."

"Hydralift Scanmec introduced early in the eighties a new and different mill design for very large grinding mills. The design described has actually no size limitation upwards and is so far suggested with motor power up to 40 MW. The mill is furnished with gearless ring motor drive transmission. It is totally fabricated, without heavy castings. The first installation, an 8, 1 MW ball mill dia. 6,5 m x 9,65 m length, has been in continous operation in 13 years without problems. Total grinding costs has been reduced with 3 0% compared to traditional smaller mills. Reductions has been achieved in maintenance cost, power consumption, liner wear and grinding media consumption.So far 3 ball mills of the described design are delivered and in operation, one grinding Iron ore and two grinding Nickel ore.IntroductionThe design of mills for mineral ore dressing has basically been unchanged since grinding in mills started some I 00 years ago, in spite of the fact that mills have grown larger and larger. This has resulted in structural and mechanical problems, causing expensive failures and loss of production.Hydralift Scanmec engineers were designing mills for more than 20 years according to the old «rules». As they experienced interest for an increase in the mill size at the time when reports about failing mills were published, they started analyzing the different mill parts to find new solutions. One goal was to only use elements from proven technology in the new design. Two key items were ring motor (wrap around motor)(Isch et al. 1977, Meintrup and Klein 1982, Ranze 1983) and large diameter pad bearings (wrap around bearings)(Fuller 1984), both acknowledged from other industries."

The production of phosphate concentrates (phosphate rock) from slimes represents a challenge to the phosphate industry worldwide. In Brazil, this challenge is particularly relevant due to the consistently low P2O5 grades and the igneous origin. The Brazilian phosphate deposits are made up mainly of apatite from alkaline chimneys, representing 80% of the Brazilian reserves; phosphorite deposits contribute 18% and the other sources (guano, phosphorous bauxite, and apatite from veins) reach 2%. The Brazilian industry beneficiates phosphate ores that are mineralogically more complex than those treated elsewhere. The low apatite grade, inherent to the igneous Brazilian ores, added to the mineralogical complexity due to the weathering of the rocks, has represented a permanent challenge to the Brazilian process engineers. The total measured, indicated and inferred reserves reach 3.2 million tonnes of ore with average grade 11% P2O5. The development of local technology for phosphate beneficiation started in the 1960’s. The first industrial experiences of producing phosphate rock from slimes (-44µm or -325#) fraction started at Arafertil, currently Bunge Fertilizantes SA, in Araxá, in the 1980’s. This production corresponds, nowadays, to 35% of the total production of concentrates in the company (830,000t/year) in a circuit consisting of desliming in 40mm microcyclones and concentration in flotation columns, corn starch and fatty acids being utilised as reagents. The performance of slimes flotation and the process control, at Bunge´s concentrator, were improved after the introduction of column flotation technology, in the first half of the nineties. The column flotation technology for slimes recovery was expanded to other Brazilian concentrators still in the nineties: Ultrafértil (Catalão – GO), Bunge (Cajati – SP), Fosfértil (Tapira – MG) and Copebrás (Catalão – GO). At present the Brazilian production of phosphate rock is approximately 4.5Mt/year, with a strong trend for a market increase. Genuinely Brazilian technology is utilised for the processing of slimes, the concentrates representing 11 to 13% of the overall production. The production of apatite concentrates from slimes was relevant to increase phosphate recovery and reduce costs, contributing to the growth of the fertilisers industry.

The Mining Foundation of the Southwest (MFSW)promotes public understanding and education related to the mining industry. Towards this goal, the Foundation has funded several projects from donations and fundraising activities. The MFSW was incorporated in 1993 by combining the Mining Club of the Southwest and the Mining Club of the Southwest Foundation. The Mining Club began in 1971 as a social organization. It provided members of the mining community an opportunity to meet. The club also provided a means for public education about mining. In the early 1990s, the club’s efforts were directed mainly toward educational activities. And in 1992, discussions began concerning incorporation into a non-profit foundation to further the public understanding of mining. In 1983, the American Mining Hall of Fame was inaugurated to honor significant contributors to the industry and profession. The Hall of Fame serves to educate people about prominent persons associated with the mining industry, present and past. The honorees number 75. Plaques commemorate their induction and are on display at the Arizona Historical Society’s Museum in Tucson, AZ. The combined honors ceremony and banquet have remained one of the fund raising activities.

The Gosowong epithermal Au-Ag deposits, located on the island of Halmahera, North Maluku Province, Indonesia, are owned and operated by PT Nusa Halmahera Minerals, a joint venture between Newcrest Mining Limited (75 per cent) and PT Aneka Tambang Tbk (25 per cent).The Gosowong deposit was a greenfields discovery in 1994. Subsequent brownfields discoveries, most recently in 2009, have resulted in a total endowment of more than 6 Moz Au. The three main deposits include Gosowong, Toguraci and Kencana, and as of December 2013, production comprised 5.7 Mt Au at 24 g/t for 4.3 Moz with remaining resources of 4.2 Mt Au at 13 g/t for 1.7 Moz.Mineralisation primarily occurs in multistage veins, breccias and stockwork veins, with at least four texturally- and mineralogically-distinct vein events, including: banded crystalline quartz, quartz-adularia, quartz-chlorite and quartz-sulfide stages. Vein mode, texture and mineralogy are zoned around areas of maximum dilation, vein width and vein grade. Within banded quartz-chlorite, grades of >1000 g/t Au are common. Anomalous Au-Ag-Pb-As-Sb-K-Li geochemistry in rocks is commonly associated with the epithermal mineralisation. Four major types of hypogene alteration are recognised at Gosowong: silicification (quartz-illite-adularia-pyrite) within the immediate vein zone, argillic (illite-quartz-pyrite) alteration enveloping the vein zone, advanced argillic (dickite-kaolinite-quartz) alteration above and adjacent to the vein zone and within the overlying Kayasa Formation, and propylitic (chlorite-epidote-albite-calcite-pyrite) alteration within the footwall and distal to the vein zone.CITATION:Fitzpatrick, N, Harris, A, MacCorquodale, F and Wardiman, D, 2015. The small and remote mine operators must comply with the Federal Mine Safety and Health Administration regulation requiring them to train and maintain mine rescue teams. The alternative is for the operators to contract with established teams within two hours travel time of their mine. Many of these remote operations are too far away from established teams and have too few employees to make up the necessary teams. Many cannot comply with the regulation either from a manpower or economic standpoint. The Office of Arizona State Mine Inspector, under the direction of the Honorable James H. McCutchan, State Mine Inspector, entered into a contract with the Bureau of Mines to develop the concept of a volunteer mine rescue program. This program with the assistance of the mining industry and volunteer rescue organizations, has planned and instituted a statewide volunteer mine rescue organization. The trained and equipped volunteers are stationed throughout the state and can respond to a mine emergency within the time constraints.

In this study, a combination of cathodic arc physical vapor deposition (PVD) and molten salt electrolysis methods were used to obtain ZrB2 layers on AISI 304 grade stainless steel surface. Prior to boriding, steel surface was coated with metallic zirconium via cathodic arc PVD method and then the zirconium coated steel was borided by molten salt electrolysis. Well adherent, dense, ZrB2 layers are formed on the substrates. The thickness of the ZrB2 layer showed dependence on the thickness of the metallic Zr coating layer and the time of boriding. During the boriding process the alloying elements of the substrate also took part in the coating structure depending on their diffusion characteristics.

The zinc-lead ore reserves of the Tri-State district of Kansas, Missouri, and Oklahoma, as of December 31, 1947, are estimated at a total of 66,100,000 tons of crude ore containing 2.18 percent metallic zinc and 0.38 percent metallic lead. The Bureau of Mines began estimating the reserves in October 1945 and completed the' work December 31, 1947. A total of 38,900 acres of land representing approximately 5 percent of the area of the district is covered in this report. The work was confined for the most part to properties developed or partly developed by drilling and underground workings, and to acreage sufficiently drilled out to indicate ore of enough tonnage to make a commercial undertaking. The acreage in which ore reserves exist is widely distributed in all three States. A map of the Tri-State area is shown in figure 1. The remaining 95 percent of the area is not necessarily nonproductive but represents, possibilities for future exploration and development of additional mineral resources when and if economic conditions or national necessity encourage such work. Of the total reserves, 41 percent are in Missouri, 38 percent in Kansas, and 21 percent in Oklahoma.

Underground roof falls can have devastating effects on the safety of operations personnel, and equipment, and seriously impact production. Immediate steps are usually taken to danger off and secure the area while clean-up efforts are designed and implemented. A critical step, often overlooked due to production demand, is the determination of - why the roof fall occurred so that additional occurrences can be avoided in future developments or what measures can be taken to identify areas that have similar ?symptoms?? Forensic engineering includes the investigation of materials, products, structures or components that fail or do not operate/function as intended. The authors define forensics in ground control engineering as the study of evidence discovered while examining underground roof falls by applying expert observational techniques and established mining engineering principles to determine the probable cause, hypothesize solutions, and design engineering safeguards to prevent reoccurrences. Simply stated, the primary steps in the forensics of underground roof fall techniques are: ? Assess regional and local conditions prior to the event. ? Assess post-event conditions. ? Hypothesize plausible ways in which the pre-event conditions ? became the post-event conditions.Search for evidence that either denies or supports the various ? hypotheses.Apply engineering skill to relate the various facts and evidence into a cohesive scenario of how the event may have occurred. This paper details the proposed technique by utilizing a roof fall case study that required the examination of five primary factors: mine design parameters, excavation geology, method of excavation, method of support, and mining cycle times.

When an aqueous suspension of pyrite and manganese ore reacts with oxygen, manganese is dissolved by the ferrous sulphate and sulphuric acid produced by the oxidation of pyrite. The kinetics of certain steps in the overall reaction were studied. A rate equation for the oxidation of ferrous sulphate by gaseous oxygen was derived for the temperature range from 1000 to 200° C. An exact rate equation for the production of ferrous ion from pyrite could not be established but it was shown that the temperature, oxygen pressure, pyrite surface area, and the reduction of ferric ion by pyrite are important. A rate equation was derived for the reaction of manganese dioxide with ferrous sulphate. A major facfor controlling the rate was whether or not ferric oxide was formed by hydrolysis at the manganese dioxide surface.It was shown that if hydrolysis was prevented the factor cpntrolling the rate of the overall reaction ,was the rate of production of ferrous ion, and little ferrous ion was oxidised by oxygen. When hydrolysis of iron did occur, the overall rate was not a simplefunction of anyone factor and much ferrous ion was wasted by oxidation with oxygen.INTRODUCTIONIn another paper (Cornelius and Woodcock, 1958) the results of the reaction of an aqueous suspension of a manganese ore and pyrite with oxygen are reported. It is shown that the ferrous ion and sulphuric acid generated in situ by the oxidation of pyrite, dissolves manganese as manganous sulphate.
