Analysis of the major and minor components of raw zircon as well as plasma-dissociated zircon was undertaken using inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectroscopy (ICP-OES). Microwave-assisted acid extraction as well as flux fusion using lithium tetraborate were investigated as digestion methods. Microwave-assisted acid extraction samples were analysed with matrix-matched standards. The most successful microwave-assisted acid extractions yielded 44.3(1), 49.75(7), 78.3(3) and 90.0(7) per cent recovery for Zr, Hf, Al, and Fe respectively using sulphuric acid. In no instance was acid extraction capable of complete digestion of the sample matrix. A standard addition method was applied to the flux-fusion samples due to the high complexity of the sample matrix. Method validation for the flux fusion procedure was performed using the SARM 62 certified reference material (CRM) with acceptable recovery ranges being based on the 95 per cent confidence intervals of the CRM. Successful analyses were achieved for Zr, Hf, and Ti with apparent content of 66(6), 1.7(1) and 0.15(1) per cent respectively.

A review is made of the limited published experience of the effects of cemented fill in flotation.A general approach is adopted in listing and discussing possible sources of, and reasons for, ore contamination by cemented fill, together with basic, fundamental approaches to minimizing this contamination. These approaches involve basic mining design, effect of fill placement density, optimization of curing time and of cement content, variation of fill particle grading, use of flocculants and of pozzolans, fill placement and dewatering, and or blasting and handling practice.

The deployment of large machinery for low cost, bulk surface mine production operations has resulted in high-impact shovel loading operations (HISLO). In extreme cases, shovels load large dump trucks with 100-ton (or more) passes generating high-impact forces under gravity. HISLO generates high-frequency shockwaves that cause severe truck vibrations exposing operators to whole body vibrations (WBV). Current research study in this area has established that the vibration levels affecting the operator?s seat, lower-back, lumbar and cervical regions fall within the extremely uncomfortable zone compared to the ISO 2631 comfort zone. These results pose health threats to truck operators over long-term exposure to these vibrations. In this paper, the authors will examine engineered solutions to mitigate these health threats.

Pile compression load capacity prediction methods are divided into four categories for purposes of discussing their reliability compared to static load test results. The categories considered are: 1) static analysis, 2) driving formulas, 3) wave equation analysis, and 4) dynamic measurement and analysis. It is concluded that any method of static analysis that works for the geological deposit in question may be satisfactory. However, any given method can be quite wrong when applied to other deposits of soil that are different in terms of their engineering and geological characteristics. Dynamic formulas are found to be theoretically unjustifiable. The ready availability of the wave equation analysis for microcomputers eliminates the need to utilize dynamic formulas. The wave equation analysis is found to be the best analytical method for making predictions both for design and for construction control. Dynamic methods of measurement and analysis are found useful, but have limitations that have caused troubles on many projects. Two case histories are presented that show the limitations of dynamic measurement and analysis, and of the wave equation analysis. Soil deposits exist that defeat both the wave equation and dynamic measurement techniques; static load tests are currently the only method of proving the load capacity of piles in such soils.

The dewatering of stable phosphatic clay suspensions generated from phosphate beneficiation in the central Florida is an issue of practical and theoretical importance. Because of its tiny particle size and surface charge, the phosphatic clay takes up to 20-30 years to settle in water and causes environmental, aesthetic, economic, and handling problems. An efficient and cost-effective dewatering/consolidation process for phosphatic clay is of great interest to the phosphate industry in Florida. In this paper, the consolidation and dewatering behavior of phosphatic clay was studied by use of anionic flocculants with and without sand addition. The effects of pH, initial polymer concentration, polymer dosage, polymer addition steps, and metal cations (K+, Ca2+, and Al3+) on the flocculation of phosphatic clay have been studied. Experimental results indicated that clay suspensions were well flocculated at pH 10.5 by DPW-1-1355 and Magnafloc 5250 flocculants acquired from Ciba Specialty Chemicals. Sand particles from phosphate flotation added to the clay slurry promoted flocculation and increased clay consolidation. K+ showed good performance to improve the flocculation characteristics by neutralizing clay surface charge. The adsorption mechanisms of flocculants on clay particles were also discussed in this paper.

The following record of the important responsibilities already shouldered by Dr. Ricketts will give some indication of the trust and confidence reposed in him by his colleagues. The Institute is to be congratulated that a man who is already so much engaged should be willing to assume the further responsibility of guiding the Institute's Ship of state during the ensuing year. Louis Davidson Ricketts, who is brother of Professor Palmer or Chamberlaine Ricketts, President of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, was born at Elkton, Md., Dec. 19. 1859, was graduated from Princeton University in 1881 with the degree, Bachelor of Science, chosen a Fellow in Chemistry and W. S. Ward Fellow in Economic Geology, and after two years' study given the degree Doctor of Science. Following the completion of Iris work at Princeton, Dr. Ricketts went to Colorado and started to work as a mine surveyor. For the 15 years following, his time was chiefly occupied in reconnaissance work, geological work and mine examination. From 1887 to 1890 Dr. Ricketts was Geologist for Wyoming, and at, the end of that period transferred his operations to the Southwest. where he has since been steadily engaged in large mining projects. He was identified with the acquisition of the property now owned by the Moctezuma Copper Co., a , subsidiary of Phelps, Dodge & Co., at Nacozari, Sonora, Mex. From 1899 to 1901 he was General Manager of the property and during his administration the concentrator and reduction works were completed and the mines put on a dividend-paying basis

Two triggered barrier systems and several extinguishing agents were tested against coal dust explosion propagating in the main entry of the Bureau of Mines Experimental Mine at Bruceton, Pa. One system used a high-pressure cylinder to propel the extinguishant; the second system used pressurized nitro-gas or Halon 1301 (CF3Br) in a low-pressure system to power the disperser. The relative efficiencies of the extinguishants were determined by compar¬ing calculated concentrations of the extinguishant clouds present in the mine during suppressing of the explosions. Results showed the following trend of increasing effectiveness: Purple-K (KHC03)<water<hybrids consisting of foam or water combined with Halon 1301<Halon alone. On a weight basis, water was two to three times as efficient as Purple-K, whereas the hybrids and Halon alone were only marginally superior to water. Maximum efficiency of an extinguishant is attained by high rates of discharge from the barrier and by minimizing the time interval between onset of discharge and flame arrival to that necessary for discharge. Both the high- and low-pressure barrier systems were demonstrated to be capable of suppressing coal dust explosions; however, because of the potential hazard of the former, the low-pressure system is considered to be the most attractive prototype.

Request to Mine Beneath Bridge The Jabs Run Bridge is a reinforced portland concrete arch filled bridge located on WV Bouts 7 near Pentress, WV. The bridge has a span of 22.9 m (meters) and a height of 4 m above normal pool elevation to the underside of the center of the arch (See Pig 1). The bridge is a two lane structure with a width of 6.86 m. The structure is over 50 years old Wing been built in 1929 and is owned by the Department (WV Department of Highways).

ABSTRACT: Underground hydrocarbons storage is a very specific domain for the designer. He is usually free to adjust the section, shape and layout to cope with the geological and geotechnical conditions. This paper presents a panorama of the geotechnical design of mined underground storage caverns, then lists a number of uncommon features encountered in a storage excavated in Sydney, Australia, the Elgas LPG project that had to face major non-isotropic conditions with numerous local variations, impacting on the achievement of the design profiles. Changes in geotechnical design methodology and practice are examined through this project, now in operation, which will have lasted altogether almost ten years. ZUSAMMENFASSUNG: Die untertaegige Speicherung von Kohlenwasserstoffen unterliegt in der Planung sehr spezifischen Bedingungen. Der planende Ingenieur hat bei der Dimensionierung und Formgebung der Speicherhohlraeume gewisse Freiheiten, muss jedoch vorgefundene geologische und geotechnische Bedingungen beruecksichtigen. Der vorliegende Beitrag gibt zunaechst einen allgemeinen Ueberblick ueber die geotechnische Planung von bergmaennisch aufgefahrenen Speicherhhohlraeumen. Darueber hinaus werden Besonderheiten betrachtet, mit denen das Elgas LPG-Speicherprojekt in einer bergmaennisch aufgefahrenen Kaverne in Sydney, Australien konfrontiert war. Hierbei ging es um die Beruecksichtigung anisotroper Bedingungen mit zusaetzlichen Heterogenitaeten im Gestein und den daraus erwachsenden Schwierigkeiten, die geplante Hohlraumform zu verwirklichen. Ueber einen Zeitraum von fast 10 Jahren, in denen das jetzt in Betrieb befindliche Projekt unterschiedliche Betriebsphasen durchlaufen hat, wurden verschiedene geotechnische Entwurfsverfahren auf ihre Anwendbarkeit geprueft. Underground Bulk Systems (UBS) technology has gained widespread application in tunneling and underground mining owing to its safety, reliability, increased Velocity of Detonation (VOD) and excellent results. However, its application in perimeter blasting is still limited and researchers are looking at ways of harnessing this technology for perimeter control. This simplifies the charging process by using one cost efficient product for charging both the perimeter and grid holes. This paper presents a case study on the application of underground bulk emulsion explosives for perimeter control blasting in underground room and pillar platinum mines. In order to achieve the required coupling ratios in the perimeter holes, the emulsion is loaded into specially formulated smaller diameter polyethylene (poly) pipes. The effectiveness of this method was evaluated using information obtained during routine blast audits and data supplied by the mines on half cast factors, over break and under break as well as analysis of data from Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) Scans over a period of four years. This method of perimeter control, has given the platinum miners in Zimbabwe a competitive edge in cost effective perimeter charging and blasting by simplifying the previously costly deployment of traditional barrels and other decoupled cartridges. The method has been adopted by all the platinum mines in Zimbabwe as it has proven to be a cost effective alternative of controlling the perimeter walls, along with other key benefits that relate to safety, productivity and effectiveness.

Granitic rocks usually exhibit strongly anisotropy due to pre-existing microcracks induced by geologic loadings. The understanding of the rock anisotropy in mechanical properties such as tensile strength is critical to quarrying and stabilization of underground structures. In this paper, Brazilian tests are conducted in combination with MTS material testing machine and split Hopkinson pressure bar (SHPB) system to measure both static and dynamic tensile strength of anisotropic Barre granite. Samples are cored and labeled using the three principle anisotropic directions of Barre granite (BG). These directions are also chosen as the loading directions for the Brazilian discs. For dynamic tests, pulse shaping technique is used to achieve dynamic equilibrium in the samples during the test. Finite Element Method is implemented to formulate equations that relate the failure load to the material tensile strength employing a orthotropic model for Barre granite. For samples in the same orientation group, the tensile strength shows clear loading rate sensitivity. The tensile strengths exhibit clear anisotropy under static loading; while less anisotropy under dynamic loading. The tensile strength anisotropy of Barre granite is interpreted as interactions of the pre-existing microcracks.

"A simple approach to optimizing the performance of an operating carbon in pulp (CIP) or carbon in leach (CIL) plant is presented. It is possible to reproduce the performance of an operating CIP or CIL plant in the laboratory, in small scale batch tests in which the rates of gold leaching and carbon adsorption are determined, coupled with mathematical models that translate the batch kinetic data into predicted steady state profiles of gold in solution and on the carbon across multi-stage adsorption circuits.Once the performance of the commercial plant has been mimicked by the model, the plant operating parameters can be varied systematically in the model, and the likely response of the plant to the stepwise change can be determined. In this way it is possible to inexpensively optimize the design of both greenfields CIP or CIL circuits and plant expansions, or optimize the operating parameters of an existing plant, with no disruption to plant operations and no economic risk to the mining company.This approach has been adopted by IAMGOLD Corporation, to the immediate benefit of two of their existing gold operations. The methodology adopted and the results achieved are presented.INTRODUCTIONThe carbon in pulp (CIP) and carbon in leach (CIL) processes became firmly established in the gold mining industry in the 1980s, initially in South Africa and Australia, from where they spread rapidly to all the gold producing regions of the world. The percentage of annual global gold production by activated carbon-based processes grew from zero in the 1970s to almost 70% by the turn of the century, which represented a phenomenal rate of acceptance of a new technology by a traditionally conservative industry. The main reason for this rapid acceptance of the new technology was the fact that the first few large plants built in South Africa convincingly demonstrated better gold recoveries than the traditional filtration/Merrill Crowe process, with lower capital and operating costs. And as the plants developed an operating track record over their first few years of life, they proved to be remarkably robust mechanically, and highly tolerant of plant upsets, changes in feed composition and solution phase contaminants that had caused problems in Merrill Crowe plants."

The Bureau of Mines and Old Ben Coal Co. concluded a cost-sharing contract in 1975, the objective of which was to demonstrate the Herrin No. 6 coalbed in southern Illinois can be mined safely by longwall methods. Under the agreement, three longwall panels are to be mined at Old Ben No. 24 mine. A premining investigation laid the groundwork for specifying a roof-support system designed to control hazardous ground. Old Ben Coal Co. and Bureau engineers selected lemiscate-type roof shields. A rock mechanics program and geological mapping provide early warning capability and criteria for future equipment design. The effect of mining on the surface was monitored by a surface survey to develop subsidence-prediction criteria for the Illinois coal basin. The first of the three longwall panels started up in September 1976 and was completed in May 1977. The major adverse condition was the occurrence of limestone concretions, called coal balls, in massive pods. The shields provided adequate roof control even in faulty ground. Operation of the second panel started on August 1, 1977, following panel-to-panel transfer of the equipment. The accident rate was low.

The use of diesel engine locomotives in South African mines can be traced to Van Dyk Consolidated Mines Ltd on the Witwatersrand gold mines in 1928 as a replacement for battery locomotives. The advantages and disadvantages were recognized in those days, and surprisingly, there are no significant additions to this list, but only refinements. In the absence of any Occupational Exposure Limit (OEL) for Diesel Particulate Matter (DPM) in SA, the Mine Safety and Health Administration (USA) rule is currently being used as a benchmark for the ventilation engineering designs. This paper discusses the ongoing SA journey of measurement and limitations of exposure data for ventilation planning and regulatory purposes. The currently accepted DPM limits are based upon the belief that they are economically and technically feasible for the mines to reach and are not necessarily health based. For SA underground platinum mines, a median TC/EC ratio of 1.8 with a range of 1.2 to 5.8 was observed. For SA coal mines, a median TC/EC ratio of 1.44 with a range of 1.25 to 2.13 was observed. While it is common practice in the USA to use the ratio of TC/EC for metal mines to be 1.3, the ratio found in local platinum mines is 2.2 and for coal mines, the ratio was 1.53 which is lower than Australian studies, i.e., 1.96. It has been shown that a need for critical analysis of TC/EC ratios exists, and possible reasons for variance must be understood before stringent adoption of overseas recommended limits for DPM. It is hoped that the findings from this paper would provide input to scientific approaches in developing appropriate conversion factors, limits for DPM and also in ensuring appropriate error factors (currently 1.14 for TC and 1.2 for EC) for compliance determination.

"Abstract The deformation behaviour of a foundation on deep mixed columns in a natural soft soil is a three-dimensional problem, which has to be considered adequately in numerical modelling. However, simplifications are often made due to the computational costs of fully coupled 3D analyses by either modifying geometry of the problem or material parameters in 2D for plain strain analyses or by modelling the problem as 2D axisymmetric case. The volume averaging technique (VAT) is an enhanced 2D FE technique that enables mapping the 3D problem in two-dimensions, yet modelling the two constituents (column and soft soil) with appropriate different constitutive models within a homogenized material. The performance of the volume averaging technique is demonstrated by considering unit cell simulations of floating and end bearing columns in soft soil. The results with VAT are compared and validated against conventional 2D axisymmetric and fully coupled 3D finite element analyses.IntroductionThe properties of very soft clays, silts and organic soils can be improved by stabilizing agents, such as lime and/or cement that are mixed into the soil in situ by using auger-type mixing tools in situ. Deep mixed columns are extensively used to reduce deformations and to improve the overall stability of embankments and foundations on soft soils. Whilst the most typical applications are embankments, increasingly the method is used under foundations. The first category of applications is very common in Scandinavian countries, whilst the latter application has been pioneered in Poland, as an environmentally friendly (low CO2) and cost effective alternative for piling. Due to economic and environmental reasons there is an increasing interest in the technique elsewhere in Europe. With deep mixing, the strength and deformation properties of the soft soil can be improved, and the risk of unwanted deformations is substantially reduced.Numerical methods, such as finite element (FE) analysis, can be used as an alternative to conventional design methods. They are particularly suitable when considering serviceability limit state, i.e. deformation analyses under working loads. FE analyses allow using advanced constitutive models that take account of the complex stress-strain behaviour of natural soil and stabilized columns, respectively. The problems that involve a grid of circular columns under an embankment or a strip footing are fully three-dimensional problems. As 3D analyses are very laborious and expensive, an enhanced 2D technique using the so-called volume averaging technique (VAT) is utilised. The basic idea is to describe the column-improved ground as a homogenized composite material, and using clever mathematics to map the true 3D problem into 2D. Once the constitutive relations of both composites are defined, the response of the column-improved ground can be simulated in 2D subject to arbitrary loading and boundary conditions."

The Stawell Goldfield, the westernmost of the main Victorian fields, has produced over a million and a quarter ounces of gold from one and three-quarter million tons of ore. The lodes are quartz reefs and sulphide bodies occurring in sediments of lower Ordovician or upper Cambrian age. The lodes are confined to a relatively narrow suite of weak rocks lying between stronger ones above and below and there is a definite relationship between fold structure, pitch and strength of folding and ore.LOCATION HISTORY AND PAST PRODUCTIONThe town of Stawell, situated 150 miles north-westerly from Melbourne on the main railway and road to Adelaide, is the most westerly of the main gold areas of Victoria. Alluvial gold was found at Pleasant Creek (now Stawell West) in 1853 and the usual &quot;rush&quot; followed. Numerous alluvial leads, some surface, others buried under up to 100 ft. of Tertiary sediments were worked. The alluvial gold was soon exhausted, but in 1857 gold-bearing reefs were found on the slopes of a prominent ridge on the northern edgeof the present town. Early reef mining was by small working parties mining to shallow depths only and treating their ore at public crushing plants. Some of the early returns were very high grade. The next stage was the amalgamation of claims and the formation of companies, with their own treatment plants. This stage continued till the last mine closed in 1921. These companies had, by present standards, small holdings and far too many shafts were sunk, resulting in less efficient prospecting and operation.Since 1921 there have been one or two small scale attempts to revive mining but without success. The Two Rivers Project is a feasibility study to evaluate the UG2 chromitite layer on Dwarsrivier372KT, Mpumalanga Province, South Africa. The project, which commenced in August 2001, is expected to receive go-ahead early in 2003. The project sponsors (AVMIN 55%, Implats 45%)required project delivery within a short timeframe requiring optimization of the geological and geostatistical programme. Geological modelling was carried out in parallel to the drilling programme, and significant up-front geostatistical preparatory work was done. The time saving was approximately 4 – 6 months on project delivery. The cost saving to the project (excluding NPV considerations) is estimated at R20–30 million. Today, with a stringent economic and environmental climate prevailing in the copper business, there is increased interest in evaluating new processing alternatives for production. Hydrometallurgical pressure oxidation of copper concentrates is one of the more viable approaches and several technological candidates have emerged. Of these, an overlooked but, ironically the first industrially proven methodology, utilized nitrogen species catalyzation in the oxidizing pressure leach system to produce copper via SX/EW. Given its many inherent process advantages, this may prove to be a feasible process alternative for the future. In this paper, the history of the system and its application to copper concentrates and ores will be outlined. In particular, a novel methodology for effective recovery of precious metals from chalcopyrite concentrates will be discussed. Finally, the perceived economics of chalcopyrite concentrate treatment with this unique industrially proven process will be delineated.
