In choosing the subject for my address to you this evening I was actuated by the knowledge that in the past Australian metallurgical problems have been solved by the introduction of extremely interesting processes. Frequently such processes originated in this country, or at least were first adopted here on a large scale.Chronologically there comes to mind the application of chlorination to the Mount Morgan ores from 1888 onwards.Then the application of pyritic smelting to the Mount Lyell ore body in 1896, followed closely by the successful flotation of zinc blendÇ! at Broken Hill, about 1900, and the treatment of the refractory Kalgoorlie gold ores by roasting and cyaniding. With the development of the differential flotation process at Broken Hill came the production of a slime lead concentrate carrying zinc which necessitated the use of a high zinc slag in the lead smelting process. Although previously considered impossible, the necessarytechnique was successfully evolved at Port Pirie resulting in the accumulation of large tonnages of zinc-bearing slag as potential sources of that metal. The past twenty years have witnessed:-(a) The establishment of a flourishing iron and steel industry, with its attendant coking and by-product plant at two centres in New South Wales, namely, Newcastle and Port Kembla.(b) The establishment of an electrolytic zinc process at Risdon in Tasmania.*Presidential Address, Melbourne, 20th August, 1936.

"Kinross Gold Corporation’s Maricunga mine in Chile presents an ideal opportunity to apply the SART process to a heap leach operation. Given increasing levels of cyanide complexed copper in current pregnant solutions from Maricunga heaps (over 300 ppm Cu), there is a need to reduce these levels and decrease cyanide consumption and cost. Additionally, a means of disposing of this copper is required, preferably as a saleable product. The well published SART process applied to gold-copper cyanide solutions was selected as it allows rapid precipitation of cyanide soluble copper as a relatively pure copper sulphide. The process also allows effective recovery and recycle of cyanide back to the heap leach operation.This paper reviews the SART process chemistry and presents a summary of SART bench-scale and pilot plant testwork completed by Kinross. Key design parameters and engineering aspects of the proposed plant at Maricunga are discussed. SART plant operating costs and net revenue analysis are included and illustrate the compelling economics of installing a SART process plant. The Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT) Mae Moh coal mine is an open-cut coal mine in Thailand that produces about 16 Mt of lignite annually to generate 2400 MW of electricity. The surface mine pit covers is 4 km by 7 km with mining depths ranging up to 260 m. A large pit slope is formed with the progression of the mining operation. However, massive slides in the pit slope occur often due to the existence weak planes such as faults and bedding, and the weak mechanical properties of the rocks. Hence, 200 m to 300 m boundaries of rock block including coal seams are left in front of faults in order to prevent slides and maintain the stability of the pit slope. As a result, there are significant coal reserves beneath the abandoned area along the pit slope. Moreover, the mined coal seams are very thick and their thickness range from 15 to 30 m.This paper discusses the application of multi-slicing highwall mining system with stowing to this very thick coal seam left around large pit slopes by means of numerical analysis.

ABSTRACT: In June 2001, a fatal rockburst affected a longwall face in the Houillères du Bassin de Lorraine (HBL), France. Subsequently, a large operation of in situ stress measurements by overcoring was carried out with two main objectives: providing input data for the back analysis of the dynamic event and characterising the stress field in the next panels to be mined for identifying other potential high-risk zones. This paper makes a synthesis of the results of the overcoring tests performed and discusses those results in connection with the mining context, numerical model predictions, laboratory rock test results and microseismic activity. ZUSAMMENFASSUNG: Im Juni 2001 hat ein Bergschlag eine Kohlengrube des Houillères du Bassin de Lorraine (HBL, Lothringen, Frankreich) schwer beschädigt. Nach diesem Unfall sind Spannungsmessugen durch Überborung durchegeführt worden, mit zwei Hauptziele : 1/ Daten zu liefern für die Retro-analyse des dynamischen Gebirgsschlag und 2/ die Spannungen in den zukünftigen Ausbauen so gut wie möglich zu charakterisieren, um eventuele andere Risikozonen festzustellen. Dieser Artikel stellt eine Synthese der erzielten Ergebnisse vor. Er diskutiert diese Ergebnisse in Verbindung mit dem gesamten Kohlengruben Zusammenhang, mit den Ergebnissen von numerischen Modellierungen, mit der Labor-Charakterisierung und mit der microsismische Überwachung. Cet article présente une synthèse des résultats obtenus, et discute ces résultats en liaison avec le contexte d’exploitation, les résultats de modélisation numérique, de caractérisation en laboratoire et de surveillance microsismique. The challenge facing the engineering provider is to calculate throughput rates when faced with disparate specific energies calculated by different testing methodologies. Typically, an ownerÆs team would expect that the throughput calculations be checked using more than one method, therefore it is inevitable that there will be differences, based on which methodology is used. This engineering challenge is exacerbated by the continuing evolution of contemporary circuit configurations such as two stage pebble crushing with or without high pressure grinding rolls (HPGRs) as the second stage, or second stage pebble crusher product reporting to the ball milling circuit, etc.This paper is a companion to the paper first presented at SAG 2011, which showed that the Bond Indices are an excellent tool for estimating the specific energy requirements for semi-autogenous grinding (SAG) mills in single-stage SAG milling (SSS) circuits, SAG and ball mill circuits (SAB) or SAG and ball mill circuits with pebble crushers (SABC). This paper presents how the Bond Indices have been used to calculate ball mill specific energies, and therefore throughput rates, for SAG mill based circuits. Once the ball milling specific energy is known, tower mill and vertimill energy requirements can also be calculated. Determine the advantages and operational limitations of water-let-assisted cutting used with mining equipment. Approach The Bureau of Mines con-ducted a research study to evaluate water-Jet-assisted cutting both in the laboratory and in underground mines. Earlier research on water-jet-assist was limited to laboratory studies where bit speeds and penetration depths were very low and large cutting force reductions were reported. For the past years, research by the Bureau of Mines and others has been concerned with the application of water-jet-assisted cutting under more realistic mining conditions. Study Results Water-jet-assisted cutting employs a mechanical cut-ting bit combined with a moderate to high-pressure water jet directed just in front of the bit tip to assist in the cutting process. Recent Bureau findings show that the addition of the water jet to the cutting bit can improve cutting in harder materials, significantly reduce respirable dust and bit wear, and increase product size. Some of these findings are presented as follows.

Between the main fan and the coalface in a mine a lot of air is lost through leakage at stoppings, doors, air-crossing etc. so that a much larger quantity of air has to be circulated by the fan in order that the stipulated quantity of air reaches the face. Stoppings are of vital importance not only for effective ventilation of underground mines but also for isolation of areas affected by fire or susceptible to spontaneous heating. Generally, isolation stoppings are made of brick in cement mortar. If the area is far from the pit or unapproachable, it is very difficult and sometimes impossible to build these stoppings. To overcome these difficulties, particularly near fire affected zones, an alternate successful attempt was made in Indian mines to make a plug underground, from surface through borehole, using cement concrete. In this paper the salient features of the methodology adopted for construction of the plug and the experimental procedure for the measurement of air leakage by SF6 tracer gas is described. Measurements of air leakage through rows of ventilation stoppings in two mines viz. Moira (Jambad and Kajora seams) and Kuardi11/12 (Niga seam) collieries of Eastern Coalfields Ltd. (ECL) have been incorporated. Results of experiments conducted at the Central Mining Research Institute (C.M.R.I) to determine leakage through25 and 38 cm thick brick stoppings are also discussed. Results of all these studies are compared, which show that the efficacy and reliability of the remote filled cement concrete plug in respect of air permeability is satisfactory.

A system capable of monitoring mine electrical power systems and detecting impending component failure could significantly improve power system safety and reduce unscheduled equipment downtime. Such monitoring would require a method of evaluating electrical parameters, calculated from terminal values, for indications of component deterioration. The U.S. Bureau of Mines has targeted electrical failure of squirrel cage induction motors and examined the use of mathematical models to aid in this evaluation. The initial stage of this work is complete, and has produced polynomial networks called adaptive learning networks (ALN's) that can detect and quantify winding insulation leakage simulated on laboratory motors. In this modeling process, empirical data from laboratory motors were used to select the electrical parameters most significant for assessing motor conditions, and mathematical expressions relating these parameters to simulated deterioration were formed. ALN's developed thus far can process readily measured motor terminal information and quantify power and current levels of laboratory-simulated leakage to within 1% and 3% of full load values, respectively, for motors in the 10- to 150-hp size range. The next stage of this research is validation of these ALN's for actual motor failures; this stage is currently underway, using accelerated life testing of laboratory motors.

Load behaviour in an industrial mill has been measured directly by inserting probes through liner bolts. The data from conductivity probes have indicated the presence of premature centrifuging during manipulation of the load mass. Overloading conditions were also encountered. Overloading and premature centrifuging both reduce the power drawn by the mill. These effects have been successfully modelled.

This paper describes the survey monitoring processes at Venetia, which are discussed under visual inspections, ad hoc investigations, system monitoring and slope stability radar monitoring. This is followed by a description of the main survey monitoring methods. The next section briefly states typical problems, i.e. the atmospheric corrections required to adjust total station distances, maintenance of the system and management of the monitoring process. The paper ends with some important lessons that could be applied to similar monitoring programmes. These lessons are firstly, communication is most important, process a vital part of the system, a champion must take responsibility for the programme and system planning ensures that the monitoring results are needs driven.

"The characterisation of resources and description of variability across different ore domains is key to accurate prediction of probable metallurgical performance. Such characterisation testwork often has limited drill-core from which to work and this immediately confines the characterisation method to smallscale. For flotation feeds, the JKMSI (Mineral Separability Indicator) is being developed as a potential characterisation tool, building on earlier work by Chudacek, (1990), which used shaken test tubes, and was called the EMDEE device. In addition, the consistency of flotation recovery for specified size fractions has shown to be preserved, irrespective of the amount of material in that size fraction obtained by different milling conditions, so that the overall recovery can be estimated from knowing the particle size distribution (McIvor and Finch, 1991; Bazin et al, 1994, Runge, 2007 and Wightman et al, 2010) The JKMSI unit uses less than 10 g of material per test in narrowly sized classes and results to date have demonstrated the value of the test. This paper discusses the potential of the test by demonstrating the link between JKMSI performance and mineralogy of five different ores from Laguna Seca, Escondida Minera Limitada as well as the correlation to plant scale performance obtained in an earlier survey (Coleman et al, 2006). Further work to tie down the proof of representatively of the small sample has been identified and is discussed and included in the paper. INTRODUCTIONSince the uptake of the flotation process at the turn of the twentieth century, small scale, laboratory methods have been sought to characterise flotation response. Although laboratory batch flotation tests are the most widely used method to evaluate reagents, characterise ore variability and obtain suitable model parameters using various scale up factors Runge (2101) other methods using less ore would be useful where ore samples were limited.A method using test tubes for testing ores’s flotation response to reagents was first developed by Ian Walk (Wark & Wark, 1935; Wark; 1938; Sutherland and Wark 1955). In these tests a 50 cc stoppered measuring cylinder served as a means for a qualitative experiment, the aeration being effected through violent shaking by hand. In these experiments about 10 g of mineral was ground by pestle and mortar under water after which the ground material was deslimed and adequately conditioned with the appropriate reagents."

Environmental information is an essential part of successful mine design and approval. In order to be most effective in its application and availability, this information needs to be collected in programmes with defined objectives and deadlines. Applied Geology Associates have established a methodology to facilitate the structured collection of environmental data, which provides for the diverse needs of both engineering design and applications for statutory and non-statutory approvals. Principal aspects of this methodology are the scope, timing and management of the environmental studies within the overall project planning framework.

Three-dimensional velocity tomograms were generated on a daily basis to image mining-induced changes to the overburden above a longwall mine. The hypothesis was that a coherent redistribution of seismic velocity, due to the development of high-stress zones, could be imaged at the mine scale. Seam depth was 360 m and source location depth varied from 100 to 1000 m. Sixteen geophones were distributed over a 600 by 600 m square area on the surface above the mine. More than 12,500 events were recorded over an 18 day period. The recorded seismicity provided input for the local-earthquake tomography code, SIMULPS. Eighteen tomograms were generated and high-velocity regions correlated well with high abutment stresses. Additionally, the high-velocity regions were observed to redistribute as the longwall face retreated. These results indicate that velocity tomography can be used to provide a better understanding of temporal changes within a rock mass, and can potentially be used to produce a better understanding of the mechanisms that lead to unanticipated ground failures.

"An AG/SAG mill was commissioned at the Brunswick Mine concentrator in October 1998. This paper discusses the original liner design for the bi-directional AG/SAG mill, observed liner wear, subsequent liner design modifications, and benefits. The mill liners consist of steel top hat shell liners, steel end liners, rubber grates and rubber lined pulp lifters.Lifter profile and plate thickness measurements were made on monthly shop days. Trends of wear rates were used to project when liners required replacement. Wear profile information was also used to determine where liner re-design would improve wear life or minimize scrap loss. Charge motion simulation modeling was used as a tool to assist liner design modifications.INTRODUCTIONThe Noranda Inc. Brunswick Mine, located near Bathurst, New Brunswick, is a large underground lead/zinc mine with a nominal production rate of 10,000 tonnes per day. The Brunswick concentrator commenced operation in 1964 with conventional surface crushing followed by rod and ball milling to reduce run of mine ore to the required size to feed two parallel flotation circuits. In 1998 the AG (autogenous grinding) mill was commissioned for a nominal production rate of 9,000 tonnes per day replacing two surface crushing plants, three rod mills and three primary ball mills. In May of 1999 the mining rate was increased and the service of the AG mill was changed to a SAG (semi-autogenous grinding) mill with the addition of 4 inch steel balls (4% volume). The mill operates in closed circuit with 0.66 meter horizontal cyclones to produce a ground product of 90 micron nominal size (K80).The AG/SAG mill liners are steel (Norsteel, chrome-moly steel) with rubber grates and rubber lined pulp lifters.The original liner design was based on studying other AG/SAG mills and recommendations by the liner supplier, Norcast. Design factors taken into account were total cost of lining (including material and labour), protection of mill shell and impact on operating performance."

Agglomeration for Copper Heap Leaching Agglomeration of ore is a method which can be used to eliminate the migration of fine grained particles throughout a leach heap. Without agglomeration, fine ore particles are able to migration within the heap, clogging flow channels and producing large areas where access of the solution is poor. In order to gain the benefits of agglomeration and improve agglomerate strength even further in copper heap leaching, an economical, acid-resistant binder is needed. However, most binders have been used without any systematic reasoning. A set of novel testing methods were developed, including a soak test, percolation flooded columns, and larger long-term leach columns. The soak test compares the degree of breakdown when agglomerates are subjected to an acidic environment. While the percolation flooded columns and larger long-term leach columns evaluate the flow of leach solution throughout the ore bed. Systematic studies have been completed on a wide range of binders using these novel testing procedures. It was found that for a low grade chalcocite ore, which was rich in silica, from a southwest US mine, polyacrylamides reduced the fines migration the best in the novel soak test. The non-ionic binder, in particular, was found to reduce fines migration as much as 93 per cent. Several of the binders tested were shown to increase the hydraulic conductivities of the agglomerated ore up to 2.5 mm/sec, compared to a hydraulic conductivity of only 0.25 mm/sec when no binder was used. These binders also prevented 'slumping' of the ore, which indicates a decrease in breakdown of the agglomerates. The use of a binder also showed no interference with leaching reactions in long-term leaching experiments.

There were no significant changes in the mineral industries of the smaller Caribbean Islands during 1980. Imported petroleum requirements continued to erode economic gains that may have occurred in other sectors. Some relief may be forthcoming as more qualified Caribbean countries take advantage of Trinidad and Tobago's petroleum product financing program (see Trinidad and Tobago). There were no crude oil discoveries in these areas during 1980, although some geophysical testing around the British Virgin Islands and Antigua war underway. In March 1980, the Government of Antigua sold a 75% interest in the 16,000-barrel- per-day West Indies Oil Co. refinery to the Swiss Intermaritime Bank and Intermaritime Management Services for $6 million. The new refinery company is called the National Petroleum Co. Shutdown since 1976, it was originally planned for the refinery to reopen in 1980, but refurbishing has proved to be more extensive than anticipated. The reopening is now expected in 1981.

"Engitec developed the EZINEX® Technology some years ago to recover zinc from oxidized secondary sources. This process works at neutral pH and can take into solution any kind of metal, but iron is rejected and remains in the leach residue. Engitec has also developed the FLUOBORATE System, which is able to recover lead and copper from relevant concentrates. Some iron is leached into solution, but it is controlled through a solution purification bleed treatment. In this paper, we present the two above mentioned technologies. They are very different with regards to the chemical environments and the methods used to control the build-up of iron in solution, but both systems are suitable to treat iron bearing feeds.INTRODUCTIONIn the design of hydrometallurgical processes, the most important issues are the water balance, the filtration and the control of impurities. This is particularly important when the process includes an electrowinning unit. Iron has been one of the most problematic elements to remove, especially in acidic environments.Engitec Technologies has developed several hydrometallurgical processes divided in two different electrolyte lines: the Fluoborate Technology for the recovery of lead and copper from primary and secondary sources and the Ammonium Chloride System based on a chloride electrolyte for the recovery of different non-ferrous metals, among which zinc and lead are the most important. In both cases, iron is present in the feed and needs to be eliminated from the solution. It is not a problem for the quality of the metal produced, but when present in solution, it consumes the basic electrolyte reducing its free concentration which is very important both for both the leaching and electrowinning unit operations. Both process systems are very peculiar, the fluoborate case being much more intriguing."

The work described forms part of a Safety in Mines Research Advisory Committee (SIMRAC) funded project, currently an ongoing programme of research aimed at providing ?improved criteria, guidelines and the use of numerical models to design mine layouts at depth, so as to reduce seismicity and enhance worker safety?. The entire project deals with a number of distinct, albeit interrelated, research areas such as: subsidence and caving in hardrock, general numerical criteria for layout design, regional benefits of backfill, concrete pillars, strike stabilizing pillars and bracket pillars. This paper will focus on the last two items only. New considerations for the design of both stabilizing pillars and bracket pillar layouts are briefly discussed.

Two different techniques were used to make measurements of the absolute value of electromagnetic noise in an operating coal mine, Itmann No. 3 Mine, located near Mullens, West Virginia. The electromagnetic environment created by 250-volt-dc and 550-and 950-volt-ac machinery in two longwall panels was measured and is reported. One technique measures noise over the entire electromagnetic spectrum of interest for brief time periods. It is recorded using broadband analog magnetic tape, and the noise data is later transformed to give spectral plots. The other technique records noise amplitudes at several discrete frequencies for a sufficient amount of time to provide amplitude probability distributions. The specific, measured results are given in a number of spectral plots and amplitude probability distribution plots.
