Under the Heavy Metals Program, investigations were conducted at the old Badger dill placer mini in Nevada County California to collect data and information regarding drilling and sampling methods and deposit characteristics. The studies contributed to a team effort by five Bureau of Mines research groups to develop new or improved placer mining technology in the Tertiary gold-bearing channel gravel of northern California. This report describes the techniques used and the results obtained in the sampling and drilling stage of deposit delineation studies that were conducted by the Denver Mine Systems Engineering Group. Sampling included the collection and processing of 400 tons of largo and small volume samples from drill holes, underground workings, surface pits, and blast hole rounds. A total of 355 samples averaging 2,296 pounds per sample provided reasonably accurate data for analysis of the gold distribution. These studies indicate that the bulk of the gold is within 40 foot of bedrock in stacked, lenticular zones of cemented gravel that are largely confined to the relatively narrow, meandering course of the deepest portion of the bedrock channel. Drilling studies involved the testing of three types of truck-mounted drills including rotary, bucket and vibratory, none of which proved to be a completely versatile tool for sampling quickly and reliably both consolidated and unconsolidated gravel.

This paper provides an account of the efforts undertaken to construct the Northeast Interceptor Sewer (NEIS) project, which is a portion of a much larger program in Los Angeles, California to upgrade the city’s wastewater facilities. The project consisted of a number of elements, including both soft ground and rock slurry wall shafts, drilled shafts, soft ground EPBM mining, rock TBM mining, large diameter pipe placement, and underground structure construction. The need to complete the project under strict schedule constraints, in addition to the challenges of underground construction in congested urban areas, necessitated the work be undertaken with the proper balance of state of the art equipment, and thoughtful planning. The paper will detail the means, methods, and equipment used on the project, as well as discuss several of the unforeseen conditions encountered during construction.

The first section of this U.S. Bureau of Mines report includes a discussion of the navigational tasks performed by operators of mobile mining equipment, with the focus on the navigational information and guidance techniques required by continuous mining machine operators. Some previous research and attempts in remote and autonomous navigation of continuous mining machines are mentioned. Issues of research in autonomous navigation of various other mobile robots are presented, with attention focused on their applicability to a continuous mining machine navigating in the mining environment. Conclusions are stated on methods of automating the navigational tasks of a continuous mining machine, and a decision to concentrate initial attempts on the tasks of autonomous face navigation is defended. The second section of this report includes a presentation of the Bureau's proposed solution for autonomous face navigation of a continuous mining machine, which includes the employment of a mobile roof support as a reference for guidance in the face area, and a navigational guidance system for the continuous mining machine.

The Cripple Creek & Victor Gold Mining Co.(CC&V) celebrated completion of a two-year, $168.5-million expansion and capital improvement program. An open house celebration was held in the historic mining town of Victor, CO on Oct. 4, 2002. Hundreds of townspeople, the press and other invited guests from the mining industry joined the employees of CC&V in the celebration. The event included mine tours, company displays and a barbecue picnic, complete with a country and western band. The Cresson Mine is located about 40 km (25miles) west of Colorado Springs, CO between the towns of Cripple Creek and Victor. The mine is the only large-scale gold mining operation in Colorado and now employs about 300 (ME, October 2001, pp.21-28). The operation is a joint venture between Anglo-Gold (Colorado) (67%), based in Greenwood Village, CO, and Golden Cycle Gold (33%), based in Colorado Springs. CC&V is managed by AngloGold North America. AngloGold North America is the U.S. subsidiary of AngloGold, the world’s second largest gold mining producer. AngloGold is based in Johannesburg, South Africa.

There are circumstances where the ordinary techniques of experimental variography in geostatistics û now in common use despite their recent origin û are not quite successful. This paper describes a new addition to the geostatisticians tool kit developed by one of the renowned leaders in the field to cope specifically with these circumstances. Possible application of this technique will be outlined when it will be seen that there are still problems remaining to be solved in its use for economic evaluation of deposits with irregular mineralisation.

Pb is an unwanted impurity in Al for which there is no established method of removal. As it interacts strongly with alkali metals, separation was achieved by adding Na or K to molten Al at 953-1 003 K. Direct Na addition led to considerable evaporative loss but in-situ addition by electrochemical titration from a eutectic NaCl-KCl or KCl-BaCl2 mixture was found far more effective, in some cases reducing Pb content below detection levels within 2 h of titration. K appeared more effective than Na at low Pb concentrations but the use of Na was preferred as it is less toxic and explosive. Na removal from Al-Na and Na-Pb alloys was also carried out electrochemically, the use of these two alloys rather than the eutectic salt as a source of Na avoiding liberation of Cl2 at the anode

Mabey Inc. is providing for the shoring design for the Naples bay Center project, located in Naples, FL. The excavation is approximately 374' long by 164' wide and is 27'-8" deep at the shoring line with a groundwater level six feet below present grade. The project Excavation is for a multi-use facility for residential and retail with underground parking. The shoring design will be incorporated into the foundation walls for the building. Mabey is using its pre-engineered Super Powerbrace Plus (SPP) wales and Mega Struts to support the excavation in two phases. The system design and the design of all the pre-engineered components are by Mabey. The foundation is supported on drilled shafts arranged with the building column grid. The excavation will be completed in two phases to allow for equipment mobilization and operation on a site with limited access. The construction sequence will begin with placement of the drilled shafts. The drilled shafts will also serve as the building columns. After the drilled shafts have cured, 630 AZ24-700 x 45 ft. long sheet piles will be installed. The sheets will be arranged in two phases, divided by a center row of piles. Since de-watering in south Florida is very expensive and often downright impossible prior to placing the seal slab, all the initial foundation and excavation bracing work will be completed with groundwater in situ. The entire excavation will be excavated to 5 ft. below ground surface to allow for the installation of the wale support brackets at 12 ft. on center, welded to the sheet piles. After the support brackets are installed, the SPP hydraulic wales and the Mega Strut hydraulic braces may be installed for both phases. Once the frames and struts are in place, Phase 1 excavation is completed, followed by Phase 2 excavation. The 4-ft. thick seal slab is then placed and cured in the wet. De-watering is now possible with the seal slab in place. Once the excavation is de-watered the leveling slab is placed and cured. The center row of sheet piles is then cut off at the top of leveling slab. With the leveling slab cured, the sheet piles have enough strength to support the excavation without the frames and struts near the ground surface. The permanent sheet piles are then seal welded for water proofing and the foundation walls are cast with the sheet piles. The design is modelled in 3D using REVIT to ensure accuracy of the design. The earth pressures are developed using Coulomb theory as there is a top frame and the frame and sheet pile are flexible and move to develop an active pressure wedge. Earth pressure uniform loads and loads from predicted surcharge are modeled in STAAD to determine load effects on the SPP frames and Mega Struts. Coulomb theory and Mabey’s structural model will be tested through monitoring with Mabey’s LIVEPin system. LIVEPin will be placed in struts for each phase of construction. The LIVEPin results will be calibrated with the structural model to determine actual frames forces and will also determine the actual earth pressures applied to the system from surrounding soil. Mabey has used the LIVEPin system in similar applications and this has helped us determine modelling accuracy.

The Gladstone Hill area hosts epithermal veins similar to those at Martha Hill, which is less than one kilometre away. There are several vein types in the Gladstone Hill area including (1) pyrite-marcasite, (2) quartz, (3) base metal sulfide, and (4) calcite. Pyrite veinlets formed first, whereas the quartz and carbonate veins formed later. The base metal sulfide vein occurs at depth and is predominantly comprised of quartz and chlorite intimately intergrown with pyrite, sphalerite, galena, and rare chalcopyrite. Platy calcite and massive calcite veinlets were the last vein types to form. Several vein textures occur in the Gladstone Hill area, including colloform and crustiform banding, lattice-bladed, zonal, comb, massive and feathery textures. Crustiform banded veins are the dominant texture and contain variable gold-silver grades. Colloform banded veins consist of ubiquitous quartz and minor chalcedony with gold grades as high as 60 g/t. The lattice-bladed texture forms from the deposition of calcite, which has been replaced in many samples by quartz, indicating that boiling and later cooling has taken place. Unreplaced platy calcite only occurs at deeper levels (>300 m). Zonal and comb textures are preserved in quartz and late-stage amethyst veins. Feathery textures within quartz are commonly associated with breccias and some colloform banding, and with significant Au-Ag grades.   The homogenisation temperatures (Th) of primary and secondary inclusions in quartz, amethyst and platy calcite range from 166 to 274¦C, with salinities <1.3 wt% NaCI equiv. The presence of vapor-dominated inclusions and primary fluid inclusions in platy calcite suggests that boiling occurred intermittently throughout deposition. The veins formed under a relatively flat lying paleowater table that occurred 280 - 300 m above sea level. The fluids involved in vein formation were alkali chloride in composition and low in CO2.

Deep foundation elements are often used as discrete elements in externally supported earth retaining structures such as soldier piles and lagging walls, secant/tangent pile walls, anchored walls, etc. These structures can be designed using different approaches such as conventional limit equilibrium methods, finite element/difference analyses, and soil spring (p-y) analyses which are contained in various commercially available computer programs used by engineers worldwide. Although these programs usually undergo various degree of verification and validation, users must be aware of each program’s limitations and conditions in which each design approach should or should not be used. These programs may incur difficulties when non-continuous deep foundation elements are used as part of the retaining system and in cases of non-uniform geometry where closed-form solutions are not available. Design input parameters such as passive arching width, wall-to-soil friction, and p-multipliers (pm) are not always given enough attention which may result in potential design deficiencies. This paper presents the main features of various earth retaining structure design approaches and discusses their advantages/disadvantages. The paper addresses some of the limitations and difficulties that may be faced with when utilizing non-continuous discrete deep foundation elements and identifies key elements that are sources of potential deficiencies and errors. An example comparing the design outcomes using different design approaches is presented. INTRODUCTION Earth retaining structures are used to retain soil and create or maintain a difference in ground elevation between grades in front and behind the retaining structure. Deep foundation elements have been used for decades to support earth retaining structures. Earth retaining structures that are supported by deep foundation elements are typically referred to as externally stabilized system (O’Rourke and Jones, 1990). An externally stabilized system uses an external structural element, in contrast to internally stabilized systems which rely on reinforcements installed within and extending beyond the potential failure mass. The design of externally supported retaining structures can be accomplished using different approaches, which can be challenging under certain conditions. Each approach has been discussed extensively in available literature, and is well summarized in the and Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) guidelines. The objective of this paper is to present the most widely used design approaches and discuss their limitations and difficulties in one concise and brief document, giving the reader a good source for comprehensive understanding of the various design approaches, supported by a technical example. This paper is not intended to be a comprehensive review of all available design methods and formulations available in the literature.

The widely accepted concept of mineral resources are that they are finite - mining therefore being intrinsically unsustainable. Yet the modern global mining industry continues to grow production at strong rates - how can this be? In reality, mining is a complex industry, starting with exploration, development, operations and then rehabilitation and closure. A recent major study of Australia has shown that for most mineral commodities, exploration continues to find new deposits, or expand resources at existing mines. In parallel, however, there are a number of key 'mega-trends' which are growing in their importance - declining ore grades (or quality), increasing tailings and waste rock volumes, the need for deeper mining, more refractory ore types, increasing energy inputs and higher unit energy costs, increasing pollution issues and, of course, not to forget greenhouse gas emissions issues. This paper will present a detailed case study of the ultimate sustainability of the Australian mining industry - showing long term historical data sets on ore grades, waste volumes and economic resources and placing these trends in light of major twenty-first century issues such as energy supplies (especially Peak Oil), climate change and existing and emerging land use conflicts (eg agriculture versus mining). Australia is a critical case study in the sustainability of mining, as it is a major global exporter of numerous commodities, and this is expected to continue to underpin the ongoing industrialisation of countries such as China and India. The ultimate question begs - can Australia actually meet this fundamental challenge, or will our resources run out, or will we be constrained by environmental issues such as climate change, land use or perhaps water? Rather than a mere optimist's or pessimist's view, this paper will present a range of hard data which underpins the debate about the sustainability of mining this century: ultimately, we cannot assume that the patterns of past mining will continue to work in the future. The sustainability of mining continues to hang in a precarious balance.

"An apparatus and procedure developed in the laboratory of the South-west Experiment Station of the Bureau of Mines are capable not only of determining the rate and volume of penetration of solutions into porous materials but also of determining the total volume of voids within particles of porous material, and the density. The method is applicable to ores, bricks, concretes, tiles, filter bottoms, or other porous materials of this nature. As will be made clear in the descriptive matter to follow, the method measures (a) the volume of voids within the porous materials and is not concerned with the interstitial space between the particles.Porous materials usually contain some large voids and also pores that are capillary in nature. To measure the total volume of voids in a sample it is necessary to replace the gas or gases within the voids with some liquid of known density. The large cavities can be filled quite readily, but under ordinary conditions a long time may be required to fill capillary pores. As many porous materials are of a decomposable nature it is necessary to evacuate the porous materials and then submerge them in a liquid of known density to bring about saturation in a short time. Then by the use of a hydrostatic balance the volume of porous material (solid itself) can be determined. To determine the volume of porous material plus voids it is necessary to coat the sample with some material, such s paraffin, which will prevent solution from entering the voids; then, by means of a hydrostatic balance, the volume of porous material plus voids is determined and by subtracting that of the porous material from this the volume of voids is ascertained. The rate of penetration of solutions can be determined either (a) by measuring the change in weight as the sample becomes saturated when immersed ni a liquid of know density, or (b) by measuring the volume of liquid penetrating with a dilatometer. In either instance, due to the fact that some penetration takes place as soon as the sample comes in contact with solution and before a reading can be taken, the sample must be paraffined to determine the total volume of penetration. Since many porous materials partly decompose and disintegrate in liquids the rate and volume of penetration can better be measured by dilatometer than by the change in weight, as saturation takes place when immersed in a liquid. The details of procedure for determining (a) total volume of voids, and (b) rate and volume of penetration are given in this paper."

Lignite deposits of Central Otago Miocene Dunstan Formation accumulated on a broad alluvial plain and on deltas that flanked a large freshwater lake. The regional subsurface distribution and configuration of the lignite-bearing strata are identified within the context of depositional systems and placed into a genetically defined stratigraphic framework. The stratigraphic and depositional models constructed, should form an integral part of the geological assessment process to guide future regional or mine based lignite drilling programmes. Further testing and evaluation of the commercialy important lignite deposits in the Blackstone and Roxburgh Coalfields are required to adequately characterise the lignites and their geological setting, particularly to select methods of mining and wise uses of the lignite.

INTRODUCTION Content of this Report The 1300m long twin-bore 8.1m diameter Airside Road Tunnels (ART) were excavated beneath the busy taxiways and stands of Heathrow Airport between 2002and 2003. The tunnels were fully completed and handed over to the client for use early in 2005. This paper will describe the purpose of the tunnels, and the measures put in place to minimize the impact of construction on the daily activities involved in running an international airport. Terminal 5 Construction Heathrow Airport is the busiest international airport in the World, with a current capacity of circa 67 million passengers per year, based on existing infrastructure of4 passenger terminals, 1 cargo terminal, 2 runways and 170 aircraft stands. Terminal 5(T5) is being built to increase Heathrow’s passenger capacity by providing the following: 12 additional aircraft stands through redevelopment of the south apron area, in the autumn of 2004 A main terminal building (T5A) and a first satellite (T5B), and 43 additional stands by the spring of 2008, most of which will be able to receive the new generation large aircraft (Airbus A380) A second optional satellite (T5C) by year 2010 A third optional satellite (T5D) by year 2015 The total value of the project is approximately 4.2 billion pounds for the main phase of the works spanning from 2000 to 2007. Purpose of the Airside Road Tunnel The ART has been constructed to support the internal road traffic of the airport between terminals, aircraft stands, runways and taxiways, for passenger buses, service and technical vehicles. The majority of the traffic will be buses transporting passengers between the terminals and their aircraft.

A survey was made of accident data and operating practices related to overloading and uneven load distribution on haulage trucks in noncoal open pit mines. Safety and economic aspects were analyzed. A bibliography of the literature was prepared. Review was made of available or projected systems for weighing or load indicating that might be applied to haulage trucks. A model specification was prepared for an overload detection system. Several promising systems for overload detection were identified. One was installed and tested briefly in a 170-ton rear dump truck in a copper surface mine.

"A practical new test has been developed for SAG hardness determination. Using two kilogram samples of minus one inch diamond drill core or crushed muck samples, the Starkey SAG Test has been shown to give accurate predictive information which directly relates to on-stream SAG mill performance. Typical results and test criteria are discussed in the paperAchievements to date include:• Identification of hardness profiles and the location of hard and soft zones in a large ore body.• Accurate prediction of the hardness of a bulk sample by using an adjacent diamond drill hole.• Derivation of a plotted curve relating pilot plant power to laboratory relative hardness.• Demonstration that for every test done to date, the Starkey SAG Test produced a product size distribution identical to that produced in a pilot plant or full scale plant SAG operation.This test can now be used for blast hardness monitoring and short term control of mine production in existing plants and for identifying the proper locations for bulk samples in new projects. In addition, new SAG mill design can now be rationalized in a low cost way to eliminate unforeseen production shortfalls.IntroductionThis paper is presented to introduce the Starkey SAG Test, a practical new laboratory tool for measuring the relative hardness of small ore samples in a semi-autogenous grinding (SAG) environment. The test was first designed for use on diamond drill core samples during the prefeasibility stage of new mining projects, to provide new information about the ore body at reasonable cost. It is a new tool and does not replace existing pilot plant test requirements.The test will also be useful for throughput prediction in existing SAG plants by assisting in short and long term mine planning, where forecasting of metal grades and milled tonnage is used to control mine profitability. Continuing the systematic investigation of the influence of elements on the properties of lead(1). If the effects of additions of copper (up to 0.3%) on Port Pirie lead have now been determined in so far as creep rate is concerned.The results in the present paper contain also a survey of the influence of copper on the micro-structure of lead, a feature which has not appeared in the previous papers of this series. Further, it has now become known that creep is but little related to the more usually determined properties such as hardness and tensile strength. Since, however, these properties are of considerable importance in connection with the fabrication and use of this metal. Brinell hardness determinations have also been made and are here included.It is becoming more and more realised also that to be useful, creep data should refer to stresses of the order of those used in practice. This is due to the fact that as soon as deformation takes place, the properties of the metal are automatically changed. Lead does, of course, creep during industrial use, and probably (in lead chamber construction for example) extensions of the order of 5%...

"The StackCell was developed to overcome the engineering and design challenges that are commonly associated with existing flotation technology such as pneumatic, self-aspirating cells, mechanical cells, and flotation columns. These challenges include high energy consumption, large floorspace requirements, and size. They are most evident when designing systems to process streams containing a high volumetric flow rate coupled with a significant float yield. Unlike many metalliferous and industrial mineral applications, fine coal flotation circuits are typically characterized by feed streams containing a low solids content (<5%, by weight) where up to 85% of the feed can report to the product launder. With input from major engineering houses and end-users, the Eriez Flotation Division (EFD) developed the StackCell technology with the goal of providing an additional flotation option for end-users. This technology was designed specifically to overcome these challenges by providing an efficient method of separation in terms of metallurgy, but also with respect to equipment size, energy consumption, and installed costs. Besides being placed in tandem with existing cells to provide cost-effective supplemental capacity, this technology can be installed in a stand-alone arrangement as recently demonstrated at Patriot Coal’s Kanawha Eagle preparation plant. This manuscript provides an understanding of the underlying fundamentals of this new technology and presents data from Kanawha Eagle in addition to other industrialscale installations.INTRODUCTIONOver the past decade, column flotation has continued to gain acceptance as an alternative method for recovering fine coal due to superior metallurgical performance as compared to mechanical flotation cells. This point has been proven on numerous occasions by comparison of plant flotation data with the release analysis separation curve (Dell et al., 1972). Data from a release analysis test approximates the ultimate flotation response of a coal sample. In North America, a number of investigations have been published that document bottom-line improvements achieved using column cells (Luttrell et al., 1999; Kohmuench et al., 2004; Baumgarth et al., 2005). According to these reports, the benefits are derived from an overall increase in plant yield that can be achieved due to the improved product grade in the flotation circuit. In particular, the application of wash water to a deep froth utilized in column flotation minimizes the nonselective recovery of high-ash ultrafines that are hydraulically entrained in the froth by conventional flotation machines."

Golden Cross is a volcanic-hosted, low-sulfidation, epithermal Au-Ag deposit in the Hauraki Goldfield. Irrespective of the rock type (andesite versus dacite), hydrothermally altered wallrocks are enriched in K, Rb, As and Sb around Au-Ag mineralised veins of the Empire vein system and stockwork. Sodium and Sr are strongly depleted around these veins, whereas Mg and Fe are locally depleted. Calcium and Si display mixed behaviour, varying from unchanged to depleted to enriched. Other elements including Al, Ti, Mn, Zr, Y, and Nb show little change or are immobile during hydrothermal alteration. Element enrichment and depletion trends are directly related to the degree of alteration and the alteration mineralogy. Addition of K and Rb and converse loss of Na and Sr in intensely altered wallrock surrounding veins corresponds to the replacement of igneous plagioclase by hydrothermal adularia. Sodium and Sr occur in moderately altered rocks on the margins or in æhard barsÆ that contain plagioclase. Locally, elevated Si concentrations and depletion of Mg adjacent to the Empire vein system reflects intense silicification of the wallrocks and the replacement of mafic minerals by quartz rather than by chlorite. The geochemical zonation patterns at Golden Cross are very similar to those at the McLaughlin deposit California, and shallow levels of the active Broadlands Ohaaki geothermal system. Therefore, determination of K, Na, Rb, Sr, and Ca enrichment and depletion patterns provides insight into alteration intensity and mineralogy that is complimentary to traditional trace element analysis of As, Sb, Hg, Au, Ag, Zn, and Pb used in the exploration of shallow level (&lt; 500 m) epithermal Au-Ag deposits.

The geologist is often called upon to give judgment on the possibilities of reviving a former mining field presumably worked out as far as the evidence then available indicated. From time to time, scarcity and consequent high prices of metals has led to there-examination of many old fields. The possibility of resuming investigation on them where the practical miner ceased work, even where he had the aid of the trained geologist, has long since disappeared.Means of access to mines have been removed and water fills the workings. Hence an indirect mode of attack becomes essential.This method depends mainly on past history, and may be described as a reaching out by faith supported by shrewd guessing from the known to the unknown. Apart from whatever general intelligent observations may be made in situ of the evidence of former mining activity, the method depends largely on the examination of the past history of the field as revealed in the official records, company reports, plans of underground workings, local newspaper accounts, and the testimony of practical miners formerly employedon the field, the&apos; reliability of which has to be carefully sifted. The matter derived from the examination of these sources must next be rigorously collated and correlated where possible. When the review of all individu!1l features and aspects has been completed, tentative and speculative conclusions may be drawn which, though not verifiable before the event, will usually prove to be more serviceable guides in exploratory operations than mere &quot;blind stabbing.&quot;As an actual illustration of what is involved in the mode of procedure outlined above, the following is the description of an investigation in which the writer took part.In 1937, during the course of the Commonwealth Aerial, Geological and Geophysical Survey of Northern Australia, a detailed geological investigation was undertaken of the Croydon gold field, situated near the south-eastern. extremity of the Gulf of Carpentaria in North Queensland.The history of the field briefly is as follows: It was discovered in 1885, reached its peak of production 1896, declining thereafter till 1906, when operations ceased. The total production was about 1,000,000 ounces of gold bullion, containing approximately 40 per cent. of silver. The gold bullion was won from flat-dipping quartz reefs, which yielded an average of 2.oz. to the ton, and the maximum depth to which production occurred was 500 feet. "Laterite ore processed by the Ambatovy Joint Venture in Madagascar is primarily limonitic in nature, containing about 40 to 45 wt.% Fe and 1.1 wt.% Ni. The process selected for treatment of this ore considered the behavior and deportment of iron in each step of the commercial flowsheet. Such considerations included nickel and cobalt recoveries, reagent consumptions, liquid-solid separation characteristics, and both intermediate and final product purities. In this paper, the results for the first three years of commercial operation at Ambatovy are compared with the design parameters, with emphasis on the behavior of iron.INTRODUCTION The main component of nickeliferous laterite ore is iron, and the Ambatovy deposit in Madagascar is no exception. The Ambatovy ore is primarily limonitic in nature, containing about 40 to 45 wt.% Fe and 1.1 wt.% Ni. Since the nickel content of the ore is roughly one fortieth that of iron, successful recovery of nickel depends on close control of the behavior of iron in the selected process. Exploration of the Ambatovy area, which is located to the east of Antananarivo, the capital of Madagascar, dates back to 1960, when the Malagasy Service Géologique carried out a limited pitting and auger-drilling program. Phelps Dodge Corporation (now Freeport-McMoRan Copper & Gold, Inc.) was granted the mining rights to the property in 1995 and carried out significant resource definition, environmental assessment and engineering studies between 1995 and 2001 (Chou, Rooke, Williams, & Hanks, 2000). In 2003, Dynatec Corporation, which was formed in 1997 by the merger of Dynatec International Ltd. and Sherritt International Consultants Inc., signed a joint venture agreement with subsidiaries of Phelps Dodge to evaluate the Ambatovy Nickel Project. Dynatec then became extensively involved in the development of the project, including process selection and pilot plant testing in Fort Saskatchewan (Collins et al., 2004, 2005, 2009; Collins & Vardill, 2005). Dynatec acquired 100% of the project in 2005 and a joint venture between Dynatec, Sumitomo Corporation, Korea Resources Corporation (KORES), and SNC-Lavalin Inc. (SLI) was formed shortly thereafter to provide funding for further development. SLI was responsible for engineering, procurement and construction management of the commercial facilities. Sherritt International Corporation reacquired Dynatec Corporation, including 40% ownership in the Ambatovy Nickel Project, in 2007. The current Ambatovy Joint Venture consists of an integrated nickel and cobalt mining, processing, refining and marketing enterprise between subsidiaries of Sherritt (40% owner and mine and plant operator), Sumitomo Corporation (32.5% owner) and KORES (27.5% owner)."
