Microprobe analyses of electrum grains in some Hauraki Au-Ag deposits indicate that gold fineness is in the range of 500 - 800 (50 - 80 per cent Au), but for most deposits the range is usually narrower than this. The electrums contain minor amounts (<0.8 per cent) of copper, arsenic, antimony, mercury, iron, and sulphur. Platinum and palladium were analysed for but were not detected (detection limit 0.24 per cent for Pt or Pd). For some deposits (eg Waihi), the average fineness values for the analysed electrums correspond fairly well with the electrum fineness determined by assay during the historic mining operations.

Dense medium drum separator efficiency was analysed at two Western Australian iron ore concentrators. Efficiency data had hitherto been difficult to accumulate due to the high cost of analysing representative, and therefore large, coarse ore samples. To overcome this problem, recoverable density tracers, which are in effect artificial mineral and gangue, were manufactured in three different sizes (15 mm, 30 mm and 60 mm). Their use enabled partition curves to be studied within one hour of conducting a test: separation densities were generally lower than the feed medium density for all three sizes of density tracer. For a given set of operating conditions, the smaller tracers had lower separation densities and larger ecart probab/es than the large tracers. These phenomena are explained with the aid of a conceptual model of a drum separator, which assumes that the feed ore plunges to the bottom of the drum upon introduction. Particle rising velocities are, therefore, process determining.Medium rheology was altered by adjusting the proportion of solids in the pulp. This was accomplished by changing both the pulp density and ferrosilicon/magnetite ratio. Higher solids volume fractions invariably caused a decrease in separation densities and an increase in ecart probables, most markedly for the smaller tracers. A similar response was observed when feed tonnages were raised.An explanation for these phenomena is sought in the discussion which also suggests means of improving drum separator efficiency.

To insure domestic production of aluminium for, essential civilian and defense uses, the Government, under authority of the Defense Production Act of 1950, programed and promoted an aluminum-expansion program that will more than double the primary production capacity that existed in 1949. In view of this vastly increased production, the raw materials, with respect to both quantity and sources, are reviewed. The raw-material consumption pattern, the requirements during an expansion period when excess quantities of materials for starting up new facilities are consumed, and the probable requirements for production of 1.7 million tons per year of primary aluminum are discussed. The raw materials that presented the most difficult supply problems were bauxite, electrical power, and fluoride salts, and the supply pattern for these materials probably will undergo changes. A major part of the electrical energy for the increased capacity was to come from thermal generation, Jamaica-was to become a major source of bauxite, and synthetic fluoride salts were replacing natural cryolite in increasing quantities. Other raw-material requirements discussed are: Soda ash; lime, and limestone; starch; filter cloth; fuel; alumina; the carbonaceous materials, green and calcined petroleum coke, high-and low-temperature pitch and coke or anthracite; cryolite; aluminum fluoride; the materials going into production of synthetic fluorides, acid-grade fluorspar, and sulfuric acid; and labor. INTRODUCTION The raw materials for the aluminum industry that have received the most publicity are bauxite, the ore that supplies elemental aluminum, and electrical energy, the means by which aluminum oxide is reduced to metal. A number of other important materials are, however, required in large quantities in the production of primary aluminum metal.

Calcination of samples from the Savage River region of Thsmania containing varying magnesite/dolomite ratios under conditions optimized for the magnesite component, followed by carbonic acid leaching at elevated pressures, leads to leachates of varying composition. For a 3 per cent solids slurry leached at 15.5°C and 700 k Pa carbon dioxide, the leachates have magnesium concentrations in the range 0.71 - 13.2 g/litre. The corresponding magnesium extraction data are 12.5 - 86.4 per cent. The variation in leachate composition would be unacceptable in terms of continuous processing, so that a feed of "constant" composition is essential. Selective mining and physical beneficiation to remove the bulk of the dolomite do not appear to be practical. It is concluded that the most appropriate method of feed preparation is to carry out extensive blending of the magnesite/dolomite ore and the resultant calcine.

Smelting of Cu anode slimes involves the use of a slag to hold the oxidised Cu, but some Ag is also inevitably oxidised to the slag. The solubility of Ag in sodium silicate slags at 1 100 and 1 150 degrees C has now been determined over a very wide range of oxygen partial pressures. Silver was found to be present in the slags both as neutral atoms and as AgO(0.5). The activity coefficient for atomic Ag was a very strong function of slag composition and temperature, whereas that for AgO(0.5) was much less affected by slag composition and was almost independent of temperature over the limited range examined. The results reveal that the dissolved Ag cannot be fully recovered by reduction of the slag with very reducing gases

The involvement of concerned parties in all aspects of the Lihir Project from an early stage has promoted good relations between all groups. Activities involving landowners, the Lihir community, the New Ireland Provincial Government (NIPG) and the prospective developer include the Lihir Liaison Committee, Lihir Working Group, Environmental Planning Committee, Provincial Mining Task Force and the Lihir Mining Area Landowners Association (LMALA). With modifications, the Lihir Liaison model may be of use in promoting good relationships among parties in other mineral developments.

Pillar recovery continues to be one of the more hazardous activities in underground coal mining. Safety requires that the roof above the intersection remain stable until after the pillar has been extracted. Artificial supports (timbers and Mobile Roof Supports) arc essential to roof stability, but so is the final remnant stump or pushout. Traditional mining practices usually called for the complete extraction of the final stump, but the recent trend (both in the U.S. and internationally) seems to be towards mining plans that leave a remnant stump. For this study, a sample of roof control plans from the Mine Health and Safety Administration (MSHA) Coal Districts were analyzed to determine current pillar recovery practices. Both full- and partial- extraction plans were included. Special attention was paid to whether plans require that a final stump be left, and whether requirements regarding the dimensions of the remnant stump are included. Foreign experience with final stumps is also summarized. It seems that the risk of major pillar falls can often be reduced by leaving final stumps that are large enough to protect the intersection, but small enough that they do not inhibit the caving of the gob. Because final stumps are often irregular in shape, a new approach for estimating their strength is described. Analyses were conducted to assess the effect of seam height and depth of cover on the potential variation in the size of remnant stumps.

This paper outlines the development of small diameter grouted piling, to deal with foundation problems in difficult soils conditions and in very restricted access areas. A number of applications are outlined to show the way in which these piles have been used over the last sixteen years in Canada. PICKERING GENERATING STATION - ONTARIO HYDRO UNDERPINNING OF SCREENHOUSE - TRASH DISPOSAL AREAS Between 12th July and 29th September 1971, 40 small diameter grouted piles were installed in the screenhouse at Pickering Generating Station. Access was extremely restricted as the screenhouse had been completed and the majority of mechanical equipment had been installed. The two ends of the screenhouse had been built on granular fill which overlies till and shale bedrock and settlements had been observed which it was decided had to be halted even though the rate of subsidence had decreased. Energy Metals Corp. (EMC) holds numerous mineral properties in the northern portion of the Great Divide Basin. The JAB property is one of several potential properties being planned for development as a satellite facility to the greater Antelope uranium project. A National Instrument 43-101 Technical Report was completed for the JAB property. This report estimated total measured and indicated mineral resources on the property totaling 1.6 kt (3,555,022 lbs) U3O8 contained in 2.2 Mt (2.4 million st) at an average grade of 0.073 percent U3O8 at a 0.25 grade times thickness (GT) cutoff in accordance with CIM Standards on Mineral Resources and Reserves. The JAB property is located in Sections 13, 14, 15, 16, 21, 22 and 23, Township 26 North, Range 94 West, approximately Latitude 42° 14’ North and Longitude 108° 00’ West (Fig. 1). This property consists of unpatented mining lode claims and Wyoming state mineral leases com-prising approximately 850 hm2 (2,100 acres).

"An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. A full-length paper was not prepared for this presentation.South-East Asia represents the world’s most productive tin province, mainly from placers. Kalimantan has been a major diamond producer, while in the 1980s a placer gold rush occurred in Indonesia and Malaysia. Reviewing extensive geological and mining data highlights phenomenal palaeo-environmental changes in the Sundaland region, interpreted to be responsible for generating ‘giant’ placers. Correlation of the Late Cainozoic stratigraphy has been facilitated from mine exposures and drill holes distributed throughout Peninsular Malaysia, the Indonesian Tin islands and Kalimantan, including contiguous marine areas with extensive shallow seismic profiling data. Knowing the association of rich placers with palaeo-environmental episodes and stratigraphical units has been helpful to facilitate their discovery. All three placer commodities responded similarly to region-wide landscape evolution following Mio-Pliocene high sea levels. Commencing with major regression, important stages comprised: a long period of landscape stability with deep weathering during the maximum Sundaland extent gradually rising sea levels/precipitation initiated slumping of mineralised regolith to form fans, later reworked by braided streams with aggradation (Old Alluvium); during episodic pluvial periods downcutting upgraded placers significant change occurred around Middle Pleistocene time with peneplanation and pedogenesis from Late Pleistocene time ‘modern’ fluviatile deposition (Young Alluvium) filled incised V-shaped valleys.Placer seams show systematic variation in stratigraphic position, in particular cassiterite especially occurs in the Old Alluvium (equivalent Upper Dahor Formation in Kalimantan). Gold is commonly richer in gravelly younger deposits, partly because of secondary precipitation within permeable alluvium. Construction work on one of the world's largest landslide stabilisation projects is drawing to a close in Central Otago. Begun in mid 1990, major stabilisation work has been carried out on seven large rockslides which will be partially inundated when the Clyde dam reservoir (Lake Dunstan) is filled. The work has required the construction of 14.5 kilometres of tunnel, 60 kilometres of surface drilling, 78 kilometres of drilled drainage holes and five million cubic metres of earthworks. The stabilisation programme has been carried out by the Electricity Corporation of New Zealand as part of the Clyde Power Project, a hydroelectric development on the Clutha River.

New Zealand can be regarded as a rifted part of mineral-prospective eastern Australia. Geologically credible comparisons between selected trans-Tasman and SW Pacific geological provinces and units, especially those that contain significant mineralisation in Australia, can help provide a useful exploration framework for New Zealand. As part of a six-year Mineral Wealth of NZ and its EEZ (MWE) research programme, we have targeted selected geological units in eastern Australia for comparison and contrast with their potential New Zealand counterparts. In future years, the programme will focus on geological units in New Caledonia.

James Barnes is Managing Director of James Barnes & Associated Ltd which is a company that has invested ten years of development to provide developers with a transparent, user friendly consultation framework that identifies who needs to be consulted, how they are to be consulted and procedures required to manage the risks associated with getting all the wrong! Despite the assertion above, this paper is not about to provide delegates with the answer to whom they ought to consult or identify the expectations that Maori might have in regard to the consultation process. It would be a very brave person indeed who would venture an opinion on such a sensitive subject. There are no short cuts to finding out what expectations Maori might have on any given situation. Nothing can be taken for granted. What this paper will attempt to do however is provide practical insights into what might be on the minds of Maori interests as they deal with the issues associated with mineral resources, particularly those under Treaty of Waitangi Claim. The Treaty of Waitangi has a significant bearing on the current debate between Maori and the Crown regarding ownership of mineral resources in New Zealand. The Waitangi Tribunal is currently hearing a case presented by a number of Iwi over the ownership of oil and gas resources in Taranaki and Hawkes Bay. Others will follow. The Crown and Maori have never been able to settle differences over ownership rights without resorting to legal action and it looks like this scenario is about to be repeated in regards to minerals. The Crown has a duty to actively protect the Maori interest. This is a fundamental expectation in the relationship between Maori and the Crown. In the case of minerals, Maori have yet to see the Crown do its duty. The impact on developers has become evident through Maori objections to consent applications as the issues of mineral right remain unresolved.

To optimise the haulage of the large tonnages produced from stopes in this high production gold mine, an ore pass and feeder system was introduced. This ore pass was designed and developed in 2006 and the plate feeder installed and commissioned soon after. Cavity Monitoring Surveys (CMS) have been undertaken of the ore pass since it was commissioned. The original thickness that was surveyed of the pillar between the ore pass and decline in 2006 was approximated to be 19 m. Throughout its use large blocks of rock were reporting at the plate feeder. This was the first indication that the ore pass was failing somewhere between the tipping level of the 9410 level and the plate feeder at the 9330. Even so CMS surveys were not taken systematically to firstly identify the area of failure or for monitoring. In August 2008 after implementing management systems, large blocks were still reporting to the plate feeder. The decision was made to empty the pass enough to carry out a CMS survey of the area. Subsequently it was discovered that the area of failure was between the decline and ore pass and that since the first survey the pillar thickness had been reduced to approximately 9.7 m. Further management controls were put in place to slow movement of the material and to limit the use of the 9410 tipping level, but this did not alleviate the rate of failure entirely. The results of an initial inelastic numerical model indicated that most of the pillar was damaged and that failure into the decline likely if no changes were made. The numerical modelling predicted that even if material was no longer passing through the ore pass interaction between the voids was unavoidable and would most likely result in instability. The ore pass and plate feeder are an integral part of the haulage system for the remaining life-of-mnie. Two solutions were sought to firstly reinforce and stabilise the pillar between the ore pass and decline and secondly to rehabilitate the ore pass or find an alternate design that could still utilise the plate feeder. This paper summarises the analysis and resulting rehabilitation that was used to accomplish this.

A way back in 1851-2 an army of diggers had commenced the conquest, of the now famous goldfields of Australasia. At that time, and in the Colony of Victoria, more that 10,000 were camped on and around the slopes of the silurian ridges over which Ballarat East h'as been built. A wonderfully rich golden harvest was soon gathered from the alluvial found high on these slopes, and from runs (or gutters) which got their rise on them, and were traced down gullies into a broad valley. In due course it was ascertained that the valley carried a main gutter which represented the unity of the higher ones, and further explorations proved this gutter to have a westerly and then a southerly trend toward and under a basaltic plateau, on the top ofwhich Ballarat West and Sebastopol now stand. In the records of alluvial gold mining all the world over the Ballarat field can be classed amongst the richest. Gold in pieces the size of beans, in, stringy filigree bits, in dust and in solid lumps (the largest of which weighed more than 2,200 ozs.), was obtained in the comparatively shallow ground on the slopes; and speaking generally, great and uniform richness was met with along a belt of country on which, in a north and south line, the present quartz mines of Ballarat East are at work. It was noticed by the diggers that when the gutters crossed the upturned edges of the ,strata, the gold deposits in them were patchy, and that when they trended north and south on this beltthey carried rich deposits for longer distances. In time it was also noticf!d that a class of stringy, irregular shaped quartz occurrences, in a bottom of soft slates, in the, immediate vicinity of tpe g)ltter, meant greater richness, and (in the aIluvial) on the higher ground slabs of quartz would now and then be met with, in which strings and spongy masses of gold were found. As the shallow alluvial became worked out the diggers turned their attention to the quartz occurrences, and, now and again the striking of a flat make of a very golden nature would cause quite a stir in the local mining world.

The U.S. Bureau of Mimes conducts research at the Galena Mine, Wallace, ID, with the aim of mitigating the effects of rock bursting. Destress blasting is commonly used as a stress control technique at the mine. A digital seismic array and an array of borehole pressure cells (BPC's) had been installed near the site of a stope undergoing mining and periodic destressing. The instrumentation was being monitored at the time of a destress blast of the 46-99 stope. No significant seismic events occurred coincident with the destress. However, the destress was followed by a 21/2-week period of increased seismic activity, including two damaging events on February 7, 1990, at 034500 (hour, minute, and second) and 122020 Pacific standard time. BPC measurements indicated coseismic ground pressure changes on the order of 200 to 300 kPa associated with the damaging events. Fault plane solutions and dislocation models established that stress changes induced by the event at 034500 may have been significant in promoting the occurrence of the event at 122020. Theoretical investigations suggest that applying knowledge of the existing stress field, an understanding of rock burst mechanics, and fracture mechanics principles can improve destress effectiveness.

Due to the transport mechanics of the depositional environment, glacial soils display a very wide range of grain sizes and behavior. Several nonstandard drilling, sampling, and analytical techniques are therefore required to characterize the subsurface. The paper summarizes the geotechnical investigation for the design of a large project in glacial geology, which will include both large and small diameter pressure balance tunneling. The paper focuses on the challenges presented by the glacial environment and the techniques required to identify and characterize it for design and contract document preparation.
